The Grid: A new Tron-clone for up to 10 players
Today, LogicalByte launched the game The Grid. This is a Tron clone with support for up to ten players simultaneously. The requirement for this number of players is an OctaPlayer adapter from Alinea Computer, which is currently still under development and is due to be released later this year. Until then, the game can currently be played against just one human opponent.
The gameplay of The Grid is based on the original game and therefore also on the classic film: players control so-called light cycles and fight for survival in intense arena duels while trying to lure their opponents into light traps.
The system requirements are a PAL Amiga with at least 1 MB Chip RAM and at least 2 joysticks.
According to the website, The Grid is undergoing further development. Open features to be implemented in the course of the year include player names, various grids, power-ups, speed options (currently only one speed is implemented) and memory optimisation (to support Amigas with only 512 KB Chip RAM).
The Grid can be downloaded free of charge from the title link. (nba)

AmigaOS 4: Scanner utility AirScan V1.40
Arild Aarbakk has released version 1.40 of its AirScan scanner software, which uses the eSCL protocol developed by the Mopria Alliance Technical Working Group. The client is able to scan (or print) without having to install drivers on the client device, as the firmware provided in the scanner is used. Communication is based on the Internet Printing Protocol, a printing service over a network.
SSL support has been added in the new version. Currently, the preview image is still displayed in colour, even if greyscale or black and white has been selected. The final scan is displayed in the selected colour mode. The archive can simply be extracted and copied to the location of your choice. In our test, a Canon G6000 was found without any problems and scanned a document as required, which can be saved as either a jpeg or pdf file.

Retro Supplies: Updates of hardware projects
Andrew 'LinuxJedi' Hutchings and his shop "Retro Supplies" visited the Kickstart 02 event in England last weekend and presented updates of his hardware projects:
He has developed a new version of the RGBtoHDMI board for the Amiga 500, which enables pixel-perfect HDMI output from the Amiga 500 using a Raspberry Pi Zero (not included).
Version 2 of his floppy emulator "GoFloppy" (amiga-news.de reported) is now available, which has an additional special adapter for Amiga computers. This adapter makes it possible to place the GoFloppy on the Amiga 500 / 600 / 1200, and a flex cable supplies the data and power through the ventilation opening of the Amiga. In addition, a switch on the GoFloppy allows you to switch between the internal drive and the GoFloppy as the primary drive in the Amiga (the internal drive is disabled when the GoFloppy is the primary drive).
Finally, he offers various scented candles to "enhance the player's experience of Amiga games." (dr)

Synth-Pop mit Amiga-Beteiligung: "Bleakwave" von Vogue Renege
Amiga musician Paulee Alex Bow has released an EP called "Bleakwave" under the artist name 'Vogue Renege'. The songs can be purchased on Bandcamp, a CD version can be ordered from the author by e-mail.
As Bow tells us, a whole series of Amiga computers (A500+, A1200 and A3000) were used for the production. Trackers are responsible for a large part of the rhythm work, but Amiga-based software synthesizers, real-time effects programs and MIDI software are also used on each track, which together produce a "very special sound" according to the artist.

Puzzle game: Ami Robbo 2 V0.1
Paweł 'tukinem' Tukatsch's latest project will be a contribution to AmiGameJam 2024: Ami Robbo 2 is the successor to Amirobbo by Polish game developers Bernard Krzymowski and Artur 'Szafir' Szafrański, which was released in 1992. With his permission and assistance, new graphics and levels were created for the second part. Robbo is a universal combat robot that has got into trouble and needs to be rescued from abandoned military bases with the player's help.
The gameplay is based on the classic Sokoban but there are many other elements and a top-down view that Tukatsch invented. There will be a lot of graphics from different artists, and the animations themselves will be different and more rich. The early version 0.1 that has now been released implements basic control of the robot and interaction with objects. (dr)

Game: Gorky 17 for AmigaOS 3.x (68k) released
Press release: We are pleased to announce that we have been appointed by Hyperion Entertainment as distributor of another game, Gorky 17 for AmigaOS 3.x (68k).
Gorky 17 is a horror conspiracy game that combines strategy and RPG elements. The game has a strategic combat system similar to the famous Amiga RPG Ambermoon - or the more recent "Baldur's Gate 3" - and also uses point-and-click adventure elements. The story is also driven forward by voice samples and atmospheric music.
Compared to the AmigaOS 4 version, the videos have a higher resolution and more localizations have been added. The localizations are of course also available for the AmigaOS 4 version. The game has been localized in English, German, French (French only with subtitles), Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish and Hungarian (via download).
System requirements:
- PiStorm (Pi3/Pi4/PiCm4) or Vampire V4 or UAE
- At least 180 MB RAM on loaded Workbench
- Requires either CybergraphX or Picasso 96 installed and Chunky 640x480 16-bit mode; AGA is not supported
- AHI required
- Requires approximately 1 GB of free hard disk or SD card space
Features:
- A gripping story with great characters
- Deep sci-fi horror atmosphere in an abandoned Polish town
- Original monster design and a great mix of turn-based combat and adventure elements
The game will be delivered in a bundle with the AmigaOS 4 version. The retail price is 34.95 Euro. The pure AmigaOS 4 version now costs only 29.95 Euro. The game is supplied in the form of the AmigaOS 4 version (DVD case with printed manual) and a USB stick with the installer for the 68k version. (snx)

Amiga emulator for MacOS: vAmiga V2.6.2 (update)
Starting with version 2.6.1, developer Dirk Hoffmann wants to make changes to the internal architecture of his Amiga emulator vAmiga for MacOS. The long-term goal is to port the new emulator architecture from VirtualC64 V5.0 to vAmiga in order to enable features such as Run-Ahead (background article). As the architectural changes are considerable, several intermediate versions will be part of this project.
The minimum system requirement for his emulator is macOS 11.0.
Update: (02.07.2024, 05:40, dr)
Version 2.6.2, which was released yesterday, fixes crashes in the configuration panel and restores the functionality of the RetroShell command "amiga defaults". (dr)

Reverse Engineering: Aira Force 0.7.4 for Windows, Linux and macOS
"Aira Force" is a tool for reverse engineering Amiga 680x0 software (amiga-news.de reported). It allows binaries to be disassembled and investigated (YouTube video).
This Update to version 0.7.4 introduces the correct support of labels. In addition, the latest beta version of the developer tool vasm has been integrated, which adds two new options:
- dbg-local adds local labels with their original name (like 1$ or .abc) to HUNK_SYMBOL.
- dbg-globloc adds local labels by trying to construct a name out of their preceding global label and the original local label name: global$local (Examples: main$1$, main$.abc).
This means that executables built with these options will automatically have correct names for local label symbols applied by the ira disassembler. (dr)

Chiptune tracker: Furnace V0.6.5 for Windows, Mac and Linux
'tildearrows' Furnace is a tool that can be used to create sound chip music ("chiptune"), mostly from the 8/16-bit era (amiga-news.de reported). It supports a wide range of functions and sound chips, from NES, SNES and Genesis to ES5506, VIC-20 and the Amiga. Version 0.6.5 introduces, among other things, the TIunA sound driver inspired by TIAtune, which uses rapid frequency switching to achieve pitches which otherwise are impossible, therefore facilitating music composition (YouTube video).
The songs can be exported as audio files (.wav), VGM files and ZSM files (for Commander X16). An manual is available. (dr)

Memory consumption: Consumer 1.0b
To find out how much memory his game prototype Dizzy 1 consumes, 'lifeschool' wrote the "Consumer" tool. Among other things, this is intended to enable developers to estimate the system requirements for newly written software. The results are saved on the screen and also in a text file on S:. The new version fixes two bugs. Kickstart 3.0+ is required. (dr)

Turn-based strategy game: New demo version of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as "a mixture of turn based tactical combat and role playing" (amiga-news.de reported) being a visually reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. Now a third demo has been released for the game which still is in development (YouTube video).
There's now sounds for robot movement and actions, monsters, weapon and item effects and some ambient background noises, too. Additionally the weapon effects have been improved - both in animations and the timing of hits. It's easier to see what's going on, especially with area effects.
The game requires 1MB RAM, recommended is an Amiga 1200 with HD and Fast RAM. (dr)

WHDLoad: Manage archives with WHDLoad-Download-Tool v1.4
With WHDLoad, games, scene demos and intros from cracker groups that were only intended for disc usage can be installed on the hard disk. The WHDLoad packages basically only contain the installer function, but not the games themselves. The WHDLoad-Download-Tool, which has just been released in version 1.4, can be used to download and conveniently manage complete packages.
The tool uses the DAT files from the retroplay source for the database in order to always show the current inventory. Customised lists can be created and shared from this inventory. Unnecessary data can be deleted, and missing data can be added using the administration functions. The tool also offers over 50 filters including the full range of supported languages, HTTP and FTP support and many other functions.
The WHDLoad-Download-Tool is offered free of charge including the source code on GitHub under the title link. (nba)

Cloanto: Amiga Forever 10 updates R2 and R3
Over the past few months, updates have been released for Cloanto's official emulation and support suites "Amiga Forever" and "C64 Forever", which we would like to report on due to some rather promising new features. The current, free update 10 "R3" can be obtained from the Help/About dialogue in Amiga Forever or C64 Forever, alternatively the complete packages and ISO image are available for download from the Help sub-item "My Downloads and Keys".
A mechanism for exporting/importing the configuration for backup purposes and for transferring between computers has now been implemented (Tools menu). In addition to migration to the same version, this function also supports export to higher software versions, which forms the basis for future major upgrades on different computers.
Over the years, the advent of a wide variety high-DPI displays made it impractical to rely on a fixed list of buttons to resize the emulation window (1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, etc.),. In the R2 build, a new resize feature was introduced, using the familiar click-and-drag mechanism, and offering a choice between the faster and higher-quality integer scaling, and a "fine resize" via Alt+drag. The R3 update further improves on this, adding status bar messages and dynamic previews of the possible integer-scaled window sizes.
Other notable changes include better recognition of the emulation window by screen capture and recording tools (OBS, Streamlabs, Twitch streaming, etc.), support for additional game controllers and an improved Internet modem, now with Telnet options.
This release also includes many other minor optimisations, improvements and bug fixes as well as support for some of the latest system features introduced with Windows 11 24H2. The changelog in Help/About contains further details. (nba)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.17.1
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)
The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Version 1.17.1 of the Greaseweazle Tools provide the following changes:
- TD0: Fix import of mixed FM/MFM disks
- diskdef: Remove "step=" option
- diskdef: Update BBC and MM/1 formats

AmigaOS 4: Utility PowerReboot V0.9
Francis G. Loch's PowerReboot is the evolution of OS4Reboot and, including version 0.8 released a few days ago, the first update in about 20 years. As the author tells us, his tool can now not only reboot AmigaOS 4, but can also switch off the computer if the hardware supports it, which is why he decided to rename it.
With regard to the history of development, he remembers: "The very first version of the program (imaginatively titled 'Reboot') was actually written on an Amiga 1200 because I wanted a program that would sit on the Workbench that I could use to reboot the system via a requester. Version 1.x was written in BlitzBasic and version 2.x was rewritten in C as I wanted to learn how to program in C.
When I got a MicroA1 I also wanted to program for AmigaOS 4. Reboot being a simple program, I thought it would be a good one to start with, so OS4Reboot was born. OS4Reboot went through a number of iterations adding features like making it a commodity amongst other things."
After a longer break and the sale of the hardware, he now owns an AmigaOne A1222 Plus and wants to get back into programming for AmigaOS 4. He discarded his first idea of reviving OS4Reboot when he realised that the functionality was already available in the last version of the operating system. However, feedback from users on the Amigans.net forum encouraged him to continue, as some people preferred the way OS4Reboot worked: for example, it is possible to drop the icon in the X-Dock and run the program from there instead of using the pull-down menu.
He has summarised for us the differences/advantages of PowerReboot compared to the built-in option in AmigaOS 4.1:
- Ability to use it from an icon on the Workbench or dock.
- Has the ability to add a user-selectable delay prior to rebooting via the icon ToolTypes.
- PowerReboot doesn't (currently) inhibit and flush the filesystems before rebooting/shutting down, but this also means that the reboot/shutdown is immediate which might be preferred by some.
- The latest developmental version 0.9, released today, has the ability to hide the softboot option which is a benefit to some as some graphics cards appear to have issues with this.
PowerReboot (and its predecessor OS4Reboot) was originally designed to run in the background and be available via the Tools menu of the Workbench: on first execution it is simply loaded into memory, on subsequent executions the requester is called unless it has been configured to bypass the requester and only perform a restart or shutdown. The current development version 0.9 now changes the behaviour and sets the default NONRESIDENT option in the Icon-ToolTypes, which means that PowerReboot does not remain in memory. This also means that it can display the requester on first startup.
PowerReboot 0.9 also includes locale support, and has been translated to a number of languages including German.
Thank you very much for the information, Francis! Have fun with the further development! (dr)

Petro Tyschtschenko: Brand representative for "Grundig" bicycles
Like other traditional German brands, also "Grundig" is now used by other companies. For e-bikes, for example. Former Commodore Germany manager and Amiga Technologies managing director Petro Tyschtschenko is now promoting the latter as a brand representative.
The "Grundig" e-bikes are distributed by Teknihall Service GmbH, which is the renamed Power Trading GmbH of Petro Tyschtschenko, whose managing director for the past three years has been Wenhui Chen. The "Grundig" brand rights for e-bikes are held by Modern Creation Luxembourg S.a.r.l. (MCL), whose managing director is Dennis Chen, who grants licenses under "Grundig Automotive". If the two persons are identical or related we do not know. Teknihall belongs to the Chinese Pangoo Group.
Accordingly, MCL is named as the parent company of Grundig E-Bike. According to its own information, the latter took over Grundig Automotive in 2008 from Philips and the Turkish company Beko, which had bought up the Grundig brand after the original company went bankrupt. Last year, Grundig Automotive finally reacquired the brand license previously granted to an Austrian company and launched the GCB-1 e-bike on the market itself. (snx)

SCSI emulation: BlueSCSI-Toolbox V1.2c
The BlueSCSI Toolbox combines two utilities for managing a BlueSCSI V2 or ZuluSCSI in a Commodore Amiga: the CD changer makes it possible to switch between CD ISO images on the SD card during operation. The SD transfer tool can be used to transfer files from the SD card to the Amiga.
In the updated version 1.2c some utility.library functions of AmigaOS 3.2 have been removed, so that older OS versions are now supported.

Sokoban conversion: Skinny Marley
Rodrigo Vertulo's "Skinny Marley" (YouTube video) is a hommage to his dog Marley, who passed away in 2021 due to a medical error. One of the things she liked to do before sleeping was to hunt objects around the house, especially those with his scent, to bring them to her little doghouse.
As the author writes, the game is based on Sokoban, but with "entirely new levels and a very interesting dynamics.". It is available for the symbolic price of one dollar. (dr)

Creating and reading disk images: Disk Jockey V3.4 for macOS
At the end of March, we reported on Jean-Michel Durand's "Disk Jockey" (DJ), with which you can easily create and analyse (Disk-O-Matic) disc images for retro computers and emulators under macOS 10.13 to macOS 14. After version 3.0, he continued to work on the programme and has now made version 3.4 available.
In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, DJ now understands HFS+ and makes it possible to extract files from it. Also, whenever possible, Disk-O-Matic now displays the file type in the file browser. It is now much easier to recognise which files are text files, which are images and which are programs, for example.
As the author points out somewhat smugly, there is still no AI in Disk Jockey. It's "aall hand-made with human fallibility, questionable design choices and, most of all, love for the craft. And coffee."
As the author kindly explained to us on request, in addition to the version for macOS, which is being actively developed, there is also a Disk Jockey for Windows, which can also be used to create empty images. However, he left it at that and did not implement the rest of the Disk Jockey, as there are already good solutions for Windows.
Finally, there is Disk Jockey Jr (djjr), Disk Jockey for the command line, which runs on macOS and Linux. It received a major update a few months ago and can now do things that the full Disk Jockey for macOS can do (such as analyse disk images, including ADF). This "branch" is also in active development. Individual Computers: Features of Indivision ECS V4
V4 of the Indivision ECS flickerfixer and scandoubler developed by Individual Computers will be available in limited quantities from 15 July. The previous version V3 is sold out. In a forum post, developer Jens Schönfeld explains new functions and details of the new version:
- the FPGA has almost twice the capacity. This lets us implement more features, yet keep the same form factor as the previous versions.
- all-new appearance in all-black. This is in line with the colour of our most successful product ever, the ACA500plus. Not that it matters much in a closed computer, but after 16 years, I felt it was time for a change from the blue that the three previous versions have used. Even the cable to the VGA connector is black!
- more sophisticated clock generation. While Indivision ECS V2 and V3 were completely async, we now have the possibility to generate precise whole-number multiples of the native Amiga pixel clock. This improves the VSync feature a lot, because the monitor's capability requirement is reduced to 50Hz for PAL or 60Hz for NTSC modes, but it doesn't have to be a specific V-Sync-capable monitor any more (like an expensive gaming monitor). Your choice of low-cost monitors with VGA input increases a lot with this - it's the same feature that Invidision AGA MK3 users already enjoy under the name "auto resolution mode".
- EDID monitor identification: The config tool can detect the monitor and read supported modes, so fiddling with monitor settings is vastly simplified
- CIA adapter for keyboard signals: This lets us implement the live-config feature, which is highly appreciated by Indivision AGA MK3 users. Bringing this to OCS/ECS machines, which are often used for gaming, was a "must" - you can pan/zoom the picture with the mouse after pressing a magic keyboard combination while the game is running.
- Graffiti false-positive avoidance: Generally, Graffiti mode is activated on a line-by-line basis using the Genlock Audio bit (GAUD). Some games set this bit without actually wanting to use Graffiti mode. We're developing a heuristic that also looks at more criteria to tell if it's really a program for the Graffiti hardware, or if it's a false positive that would otherwise result in garbled graphics.
- I have kept the amount of memory on the flickerfixer at 8MBytes. Although I'm constantly trying to reduce prices, it would not have made any sense to reduce the amount of memory to 2MBytes (whích is the next-smaller chip you can buy), because it would make double-buffering impossible. Instead, I have wired this Ram differently, so we can address it byte-by-byte. This doesn't impact the current functionality (which only uses 16-bit accesses to this memory), but will allow us to add things in the future that would be very slow to do on the previous versions of this flicker fixer.
- the OSD now has true transparency and can be positioned in any corner of the output picture. I know that many people find the OSD just annoying and always switch it off, which is of course still an option. For those of you who have the OSD visible, it can now softly fade out to complete transparency, adding a little modern "bling" to the look-and-feel.
- Improved interlace handling: If you drag sreens and you have a non-interlace screen in front of an interlace screen, the whole picture will turn to interlace if you drag the front screen down. Previously, this resulted in a screen mode change on Indivision, which may result in the monitor going into re-sync mode, showing a black screen for a few seconds. The new interlace handling can now avoid this.
As the developer goes on to explain, there are further plans. The price of Indivision ECS V4 will remain the same as that of V3 until the functions have been completed. There is no timetable for the implementation of the following features:
- change position and zoom factor in auto-resolution modes
- improve auto-resolution to support 3x and 4x pixels
- detect and support A2024 "Hedley monitor" screen modes
- make OSD auto-sizing, so readability on high-resolution monitors is improved
- inhibit Amiga's access to mouse movement data during live configuration (movement only - LMB can't be inhibited!)
- add a framebuffer mode with 256 colours out of 21 bits colour, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 pixels
- add 64x64-pixel sprite with 4 colours to framebuffer mode
- add 2D acceleration to framebuffer mode
- add second draggable screen to framebuffer mode (must have same resolution as first screen)
- implement P96 driver for framebuffer mode - don't expect wonders here! It's questionable if Picasso-II performance can be reached.

Worth a read: 42 years of programming - The Amiga
Matthias Wiesmann is a Swiss computer scientist who took part in a programming camp 42 years ago, where he learned to program for the TRS-80. As he writes in his blog, programming languages have changed a lot over time, and the computer world used to be much more diverse back then:
"These days, a lot of concepts in computer science settled on one solution: there is one network stack, one type of filesystem, one low-level programming language, etc. It certainly makes things simpler, but this kind of consensus is also a big risk. What I will do is go over the various devices I interacted and explain how they were weird compared with today’s mental model."
In a previous article in English, Wiesmann took a look at the Commodore 64. Now he has turned his attention to the Amiga under the title link and describes the special features of the system from a personal perspective: chipset, planar graphics, weird graphics modes such as HAM8, interlaced graphics and sound modules. Video game history: Amiga Germany trading cards
The team behind Amiga Germany, which founded and manages the Facebook group of the same name and publishes the associated magazine, has presented a new project that should be of interest to collectors who are interested in the history of video games: the "Amiga Germany Collector's Cards" are high-quality, double-sided cards that celebrate the long history of Amiga games.
Each of the four sets currently available contains five of those high-quality cards with box artworks of popular games and logos of legendary developer studios on the front. On the back of each card, you will find additional information about the motifs, such as the year of publication and the name of the artist (for game artwork) or the year of foundation and the games published (for developer logos), as well as a star rating and the number of the issue of Amiga Germany Fanzine in which the corresponding game was discussed.
The following four sets of five cards are available initially:
- Set 1: Apidya Box Artwork, Dune Box Artwork, Kaiko Entwickler Logo, Midnight Resistance Box Artwork, Nathan Never Box Artwork
- Set 2: Monkey Island 2 Box Artwork, Psygnosis Entwickler Logo, Starglider 2 Box Artwork, Apprentice Box Artwork, Black Crypt Box Artwork

Using image files and discs in PC drives: DiskFlashback V1.0.1.0
Developer Rob Smith has written DiskFlashback, a convenient software for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) that enables PC floppy drives to read and write image files such as ADFs (Amiga Disk Files) during operation. It also allows you to process real discs in Amiga or Atari format, with the appropriate hardware extensions. To use it, you need the FloppyBridge plugin, which in turn requires additional hardware (amiga-news.de reported). Now he has released version 1.0.1.0 of the software. Changes:
- Fixed disabling "auto-detect com port" being ignored
- Better support for hard disk image files larger than 4G (some partitions got ignored before)
- Upgraded to use the new ADFLib v0.9
- Changed error handling when reading from disks to include the Always Ignore option
- Added Amiga PFS3 file system support (this was a real PITA!)
Editorial update, 12 June 2024 (nba): Our original news article stated that no special hardware is required to process physical Amiga disks. That is not accurate. The FloppyBridge plug-in is required, which in turn requires DrawBridge, Greaseweazle or Supercard Pro hardware. The article has been updated accordingly. (dr)

Background: The Amiga 8 sprite myth
In a recent article Edwin van den Oosterkamp corrects the misconception, which in his opinion is still widespread today, that a programmer has to resort to tricks on the Amiga in order to be able to display more than 8 sprites on the screen. (dr)

Action-Adventure: 2nd June update of "Castlevania AGA"
Dante Mendes has released another June update (amiga-news.de reported) for his conversion of Konami's NES action adventure Castlevania, originally called "Akumajou Dracula", which fixes some problems:
- a problem with screen transitions after a continue in world 3
- the "hang on screen bottom edge instead of falling" glitch that happened sometimes
- a problem with Dracula going offscreen at the final battle
As the author writes, the feedback so far has been very positive. However, Castlevania is still a little too easy. He will continue to work on it. (dr)
