Amiga Arena: Interview with Florac Roland (AmiCAD)
Olaf Köbnik wrote:
Amiga Arena - Interview Project
The Amiga still offers specialized application software solutions, today, but which unfortunately
aren't widely spread due to small usership. "AmiCAD" is one of those programs, which
is being developed by Florac Roland. This software is about an editor for creation of
electronic wiring diagrams.
The Amiga Arena talked to Florac Roland about developing "AmiCAD" and regrettably
it turns out again that there is less than few feedback from the users.
Florac Roland still is urgently wanting users to help him in translating and
creating a guide.
"AmiCAD" really is an interesting software and ought to be supported to
ensure further development.
Who would like to help with the German localization or manual might
write to: Florac Roland

PDA: AmigaNCP V2.2 Beta 2
AmigaNCP is an implementation of the Psion link protocol which is e.g.
built into the Psion S3/S3a/S3C and Psion S5 palmtop's ROM. It's main
purpose is to provide vice-versa nfs-like file access.
This small update (untested, due to lack of Psion),
tries to fix the following two reported issues:
- NCP_LinkRemoteRun() now allows up to 128
chars file names in EPOC32 (S5) mode
- AmigaNCP-FileSystem now (hopefully correctly)
implementes ACTION_SET_DATE; this should fix
the "datestamps not set for backup" problems
reported by some people
- fixed file format for Amiga2Psion clipboard
functionality (hopefully)
- now sends a "Clipboard changed" message to
the remote clipboard server when a clipboard
exchange has been executed (hopefully)
AmigaNCP requires:
- AmigaOS 2.04 or better (localization supported).
- the IBM-PC version of the 3-Link cable.

CD³²-/CDTV-Emulator: Akiko released
The CD32/CDTV emulator Akiko for Windows is now available for
download on the Airsoft Softwair homepage.
Akiko emulates a CD32 and a CDTV on PCs with Windows with the help
of an enhanced version of WinUAE. Akiko does not need the so called
extended roms of those consoles, it just requires Kickstart rom 3.1 for
CD32 emulation and Kickstart rom 1.3 for CDTV emulation. The enhanced
version of the WinUAE is included with the Akiko distribution archive.
The source code of this WinUAE version is available for download on
the Airsoft Softwair homepage. Akiko
is Shareware and the demo version has some limitations.

MIDI: Tracks & Fields now For Free, Programmer wanted
«It was ages when v1.02 was released and it was shareware (demo).
Both authors (Anders & Dick) left amiga so Jonas Hulten has
been updating it for me.
As he has not much time for it he gave me the last source code so
i can search for another coder.
As i can't get in touch with the first original coder Anders Larsson
(also made far updated pc version) i can't upload the source for free
on aminet but i can give it to a serious coder who want's to continue on
it.
So if you are a serious coder and want to continue on tracks&fields
please
contact me and tell me what programs you made so far. You have to
know assembler.
In the package there is a full registered version 1.02 and 1.04.
There is a bug that comes more on latest version that crashes when editing
patterns so there fore i put up the older v1.02.
- Warning. Backup your old preference as v1.04 saves also screenmode u use
and it doesn't work if you change to another gfx card and use the saved prefs
from the first card. This should be fixed if i find any coder out there.
History:
1.04
- Used the 1.02 source instead
- Ctrl F3-F5: cut-copy-paste only the column the cursor is on
1.03
- Works on graphics cards - sadly the cursor looks wierd as a result.
- Doesn't scroll several rows at a time when playing. This is good.
- Removed writes to address 0 when config was loaded.
- Minor spelling corrections.
- Screen mode selection in config.
- Scaling now autoselects the current position
- About screen doesn't show up at program start

- Created basic HTML2Text plugin.
- Created a Linux manual to tex conversion plugin.
- Updated all plugins with an extra PROC, em_begin(). This is used as a pre-parse PROC, and is needed to tell EvenMore if it is necessary to create a new memory space for the file if the resulting contents from the plugin will be bigger than the original. Older plugins will no longer work properly!

DVD Press Release on "Black List" Start
The German Vereinigung für Datanschutz e.V (consortium for data protection), short
DVD, together with many experts from the fields of IT security and data protection
found out that users of websites often got forced to use cookies, JavaScript or ActiveX,
because there's no alternative version available.
That's why from now on the DVD publishes a
black list
as an official directory of such addresses.
"Offerors who cannot tolerate that users want to decide about their security settings
on their machines indepentently, should ask themself if they realy are set up for the Internet
future. Who thinks to have to punish users for their conscience of security by withholding
his pages from those, did not understand what e-commerce and online services actually are
about", said Karin Schuler, member of the DVD steering committee. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Editor: CED PPC 4.21b for MorphOS
This is the official MorphOS PPC port of CygnusEd Professional 4.21.
You need a properly installed MorphOS release as well as the original
CygnusED 4 CDROM to install the PowerPC port, the 68k version of the
program won't be modified. After installation you can still use the 68k
version of CygnusEd if you plan to install it on the same partition.
The updated ed frontend automatically detects if it's run under MorphOS
or AmigaOS and uses the proper CygnusEd main binary. Please note that
you need the original CygnusEd4 CDROM to apply this patch/ppc update.
It is available from various sources including Schatztruhe.
Fixes: Current directory is now correct if launched from WB, the -keepio
and -sticky arguments now work properly & printing shouldn't crash
anymore.

Emulator: SDL extension for UAE
With the extension which is available at the title link the
Amiga emulator UAE can now use the SDL library for graphics
output under Linux.
SDL stands for Simple DirectMedia Layer. The SDL library is
a cross platform library and offers functions for graphics and
sound output as well as querying input devices.
The version modified for UAE currently only works under Linux,
but there are some benefits from using SDL:
- It's now possible to use UAE in fullscreen mode as a normal
user.
- The emulator can now be used directly on the console (with
activated framebuffer), e.g. without X-Windows.

Game: New Demo-Engine for SOMS available
The new demo engine is better and faster, furthermore graphics have been
enhanced and according to
Silvio Kurze contains sound now, too.
SOMS is about an action adventure like never before released for the Amiga. Action
devotees well be have fun with the about 100 different enemies, numerous screen filling
final enemies and extended levels as well, especially if they get supported by 20
configurable weapons and the same amount of spells!
If the adventure devotee gets horrored by the above, it is to say that combats can be avoided
by cleverness, if you deal with the numerous puzzles.
Also the role game devotees, disliking the minimal possiblities to equip the characters in
action games, can knock down satisfyed! The variety starts with free naming of the 4 main
characters, goes thru the continuous enhancement of features and capabilities of your own
character, the detailed multiple-choice dialogs with about 100 persons, the sophisticated weapon system,
thru the 10 characters with own tactics, views and goals of life joining the force one by one.

Chaos Computer Club: Censorship is being done
A provider from Nordrhein-Westfalen (German county) starts to block Internet sites.
In some sort of hurrying obedience at least one Internet provider in Düsseldorf (Germany),
the ISIS company, has constricted access to several Internet sites
by changing the DNS entry on the ISIS name server. Yesterday, the Chaos Computer Club got aware
of this censorship effort.
On a hearing of the county government of Düsseldorf with diverse
Internet providers it was discussed by what means providers would be able to
block access to diverse outlandish websites,
[1].
This was in main about sites spreading radical right-wing content, but also
rotten.com, specialized to collect more
or less tastily picture material from the Internet, was condsidered to be dignified to
be censored. Rotten.com quote thier extreme photo collection, among other of
of casualties, as serious dealing with the manor of freedom of speech.
Philipp Schulte of CCC Düsseldorf in view of this faint-hearted censorship effort said:
"It is to assume that the still very short list of objectionable websites will increase very much in
the future and other providers will follow the example of censorship outrider ISIS".
To use a different name server appears to be a work-around for customers. eg.
194.246.96.49 (dns2.denic.de), 194.246.96.25 (dns3.denic.de), 194.25.2.131 (dns02.btx.dtag.de).
The Chaos Computer Club's considered opinion is that censorship by technical means
is not a suitable way to handle content supposed to be problematic. "The massive restriction
of the citizens in exercising their freedom of opinion is beyond the pale", added Jens Ohlig, CCC speaker.
Though the hearing of the county government in Düsseldorf on November 13 ended 'result open', according
to numerous particitpants, customers of those providers, who are in hurrying obedience complyed with the governments
suggestions, on access to several sites instead of the original notes receive an 'informer form'
[2]
to announce Internet sites thought to be problematic
to the county government NRW.
The county government's approach to filter the Internet offers and by this to attempt to
establish censorship is a critical step into the wrong direction in the opinion of the Chaos Computer Club .
"Instead of establishing technical filters, which reconcilableness with the constitutional law at least is
questionable and which technical implementation is easy to avoid anyway, the government authorities
rather should focus their efforts to sponsor the loom of media competences. More important than
technical methods would it be to emerge a social immunity for content thought to be problematic", added
Andy Müller-Maguhn, club speaker, to the club's statement. [3]
To what extent other companies in NRW followed the suggestions of the county government, without
being legally bound to, is being reviewed. (ps) (Translation: mj)

SharkPPC is not a development of ELBOX?!
On Sunday 18th of November in 2001 on the VGR-sites (title link) a very interesting news message has been published: The SharkPPC which was introduced by ELBOX at the fair is supposed to be nothing more than a relabeled Sonnet PPC-card.
If you will have a look at the Sonnet-product site it will confirm it.
Accordingly ELBOX has not developed "its" SharkPPC for itself. Therefore the introduction of the SharkPPC+ (which is supposed to have IDE-controller, AGP-slot and USB) can be doubted.

Hyperion: Warp3D support for Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon
Hyperion Entertainment has entered into an agreement with third parties
to ensure Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon support for Warp3D, effectively
doubling the number of supported chipsets.
"We are thrilled to be able to open up ever more possibilities to users
of Amiga PCI busboards", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion
Entertainment. "The Permedia 3 is around 6 times faster than the
Permedia 2 and offers a lot more functionality including full OpenGL
compliance. The chipset is still frequently used in high-end 3D
workstations. The ATI Radeon family is undeniably state of the art with
well-rounded 2D performance and top-notch 3D performance that is on par
with anything out there in the Wintel world. Support for the Radeon
family will allow Amiga users to enjoy unrivalled performance and
functionality."

Hyperion Entertainment brings 3D graphics to PDA's
Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce that it has finalised
an initial version of its "Warp3D" technology, a mature, small foot-print,
feature-rich yet very fast 3D solution for ElateTM/ Amiga DETM based
devices.
Warp3D allows content-creators to effortlessly deploy 3D graphics on
low-end devices such as PDA's, web-tablets and 3G phones and is the
product of years of development in response to concrete performance
challenges and 3D technology.
Hyperion intends to showcase the Warp3D technology by producing several
PDA oriented games.
"A lot of the PDA content we are seeing now is a throw-back to the
earlier days of entertainment software and whilst this is not necessarily
a bad thing, we do believe that users would like to enjoy sophisticated
3D content on these devices as well. Our contract-work for LithTech Inc.
also means we were able to incorporate extensive research and expertise
in the field of software rendering which resulted in one of the fastest
software renderers in the industry - the only viable solution on a non
3D-accelerated PDA. Add to that a highly optimised subset of OpenGL which
is nonetheless capable of running industry-standard 3D engines like Quake
IITM and LithTechTM and you have a piece of very compelling technology
indeed."
Warp3D was already successfully field-tested on the SH3 powered version
of Sharp's Zaurus PDA and is due for imminent release.
The technology will remain in continuous development and will be
licensed to interested parties.
For the complete press release see title link.

Update for our show report
Since I did not talked to Titan Computer on the show, I called Michael Garlich, today, to
be able to add the news from Titan Computer. The details described below have been added to
the show report (title link):
Highlight at the booth of Titan Computer
was a video cut software "Motion Studio" for MorphOS capable of reading DV format.
The development of the software is expected to be released along with the Pegasos board by
bplan. It was presented with a beamer what the video cut software already can do.
Unfortunately it is not possible to port the software to AmigaOS, due to firwire being required.
More applications under development:
The office package "Papyrus" was finished at 90% for MorphOS and is to be ported to
the AmigaOS 4.0 later on.
Candy Factory II, software to create vidoe titles, logos, and web images for MophOS.
The created pictures can be imported by MotionStudio using an interface.
A MorphOS version of Burn-IT Pro (DVD burning software) was presented.
Said to be finished until April 2002.
Games under development:
Beside of the above mentioned applications Titan Computer is developing two new
games, too. "Rage Hard" is a 3D multiplayer shooter similar to Counterstrike. This game
is being developed for MorphOS and the new Amigas. "Alien Nations" is another game
for MorphOS and AmigaOS (PPC) under development, a build-up strategy game similar to Settlers.
Titan Comuter will port their current software product line to MorphOS, as much titles as possible.

AMIGA 2001: Gleanings by amiga-news.de (Update III)
The show AMIGA 2001,
which took place on 17th and 18th November 2001, was organized by
Falke Media
and was held at the Mediapark 6 in Cologne, Germany, on about 718 sq.yd.
exhibition space. By our count there were about 1,000 visitors on the show,
consuetudinary most of them came on Saturday.
bplan GmbH - Pegasos-System
Very much interesting was the first official presentation of the run capable Pegasos
machine by the bplan GmbH, utilizing
the operating system MorphOS.
Gerald Carda presented a test program to us which displayed plasma effects.
Unaccelerated (about the speed of 68050/50) this program generates 4 pictures per second (FPS).
The same program compiled for MorhpOS generates 192 FPS.
Thomas Knäbel and Gerald Carda told us about a number of between 100 and 200 developer
systems to be available from early January 2002. Interested developers might register using a
registration page at
bplan, before long. If there will be more registrations
than boards available, it will be selected by progam priority. The developers should send bug reports,
if there will occur problems.
Machines for end-users will follow about 8 - 12 weeks later. Those machines will cost about 1,000 Euro and
are planned to be delivered with the following equipment:
- 8 MB AGP graphic board
- 128 MB RAM
- DVD Drive
- 20 GB HD
- Mouse and Keyboard
The interesting point of MorhpOS for sure is, that existing PPC programs can be started
directly on this system. Companies like Titan-Computer and Epic interactive will extensively
adapt their programs to this system.
Haage&Partner - Amiga OS XL
Amiga OS XL,
the new super-fast Amiga emulators for x86 machines were presented on three
different computers at Haage&Partner.
The speed is impressing and faszinating at the same time.
Amiga OS XL consists of two emulator systems: AMIthlon and Amiga XL for QNX in a
bundle. The emulators are similar to each other in many parts, but there are basic
differences, too. With this prevalent Amiga 68k applications run 10 - 20 times faster on
current PC hardware than on a convetional 68060 systems. This tremendous speed is
achieved by a modified and accelerated emulator. With it one gets versions of PageStream,
ImageFX, ArtEffect, Cinema4D, Real3D, and any other program fast like turbo.
Haage&Partner's highlight is a x86 machine built into a luxury computer case of noble
design and with Amiga OS XL installed. The body of the computer was made of aluminium,
the front side is of azure plastic.
While talking to H&P they appeared to be surprised by the allmost all-time positive
visitors' response and amazed at the still great demand for information, though there have
been many press releases before. Sales could have been better, but satisfied.
Hyperion - AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC
Without doubt the most interesting thing on the second day of the show was our talk to
Ben Hermans, Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden of
Hyperion Entertainment about
AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC. It was determined and safe by contract that Hyperion will develop
AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC. Aspired term of completion of an initial distributing version is
February 2002. This distributing version still will have parts of 68k code, which will be
handed in later by BoingBag updates when finished.
Hyperion will work together with bplan to make the AmigaOS 4.0 PPC running
on the Pegasos machine. Hyperion additionally talked to many other hardware
and software developers to make their products compatible, too. This gave a very positive sign,
because after a long period of time a joint line and goal is being followed, again.
Titan Computer - Update 20. November.2001
DCE - G-REX
Thomas Dellert and Michael Göken of DCE
presented the PCI busboard G-Rex working in an A4000 with Cyberstrom 604/68060 and AmigaOS 3.9
as well as WarpUP.
An USB card for mouse and keyboard, a Voodoo graphic board (3/3000), a WIN-TV card with
radio tuner, and a sound card (Terratec 512i) were working on the PCI board. There are many good
reasons for this solution: Graphic speed, wheel mouse and multimedia keyboard, support of the USB
card, 100 MBit network card can be connected; all in all it became possible to use cheap generic PC hardware
by the PCI busboard G-Rex. The board is being offerd for A4000D/T and A1200.
Elbox - Mediator
Elbox presented their Mediator system.
The following models were shown:
- Mediator PCI ZIV
- Mediator PCI 1200
- Mediator PCI 4000
- Shark PPC G3/G4
Again the reasons mentioned regarding DCE match here. With help of a PCI busboard it is possible
to use cheap PCI hardware for various purposes.
Other Hardware-Products
Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computers
showed us a pre-run model of the interface card VarioIO, which will be available before
Christmas, already.
Basing on a Logitech 2 button mouse Schönfeld developed a real Amiga / Atari mouse.
Also this production will start next days.
Thorsten Hansen of Kato Development
showed us the prototype of the Melody successor. This card will have the functions of
the Melody card plus the following specialities:
- MP3 audio not only can be decoded in real-time, but also encoded.
- Analog mixer function.
- Digital in/out (optical / coaxial)
Michael Böhmer showed his
USB controller Subway with which you can connect prevalent USB devices to the clock port of the
A1200. Up to four devices can be use without an additional USB hub. VMC started to develop drivers, already.
Currently drivers for mouse and keyboard are available. Drivers for printers, digital cameras, and scanners
are scheduled.
Other Software-Products
Amiga Forever 5.0
Michael Battilana of Cloanto
presented the new
Amiga Forever 5.0.
Amiga Forever is about an official licensed Amiga emulator package for Windows and
other platforms. Just put the CD into the drive, click on the icon and it runs. Eight different
emulation programs, all of the required Kickstart ROMs, Workbenchs, licenses, as well
as an all-around package with useful Amiga sofware are included.
Due to the implemented JIT compiler (just-in-time) version 5.0 is about
30 time faster than
Amiga Forever 4. The emulator comes on a CD containing the famous video
"The Deathbed Vigil" (1 h, 59 min.) and the video
"Jay Miner Speech" (49 min.).
But Amiga Forever 5.0 is available for download as online version, too.
epic interactive - THE FEEBLE FILES
epic announce THE FEEBLE FILES
for the Amiga. This game is about a cartoon adventure. Beside of the MorphOS port
there also will be an AmigaOS verison. The Amiga version will be available as
entirely localized versions in Engish and German (voice output). An Amiga with 4 MB graphic
board, 68060 or PPC, and at least 32 MB RAM is required.
Development of the Amiga version already started and epic hopes to be able
to deliver the finished product already before Christmas 2001.
Descent:Freespace
Hyperion
showed the new game Descent-Freespace. This game is about a
space shooter. The Amiga port of Freespace was finished at 99% and
will be available as 68k (with 3D hardware only) and PPC version from
H&P, soon. Those who ordered the game on the show got a free
demo CD for testing at home, already.
Project Crashsite
Markus Pohlmann (program) and Denis Comtesse (music)
are busy developing the science fiction role game
Project Crashsite.
The place of action in this game is a colonialized second system consiting
of two moons. The player takes the part of the "Future Security Corps" which
is the system's police.
The game's goal is to stabilize the unstable situation of this system. This is not easy to achieve,
due to a big conspiracy defering the relation of potency. The player is sent into the game almost
without any background information about the conspiracy to make him choose "pal and enemy"
himself, because depending on his choice the game becomes easier or more difficult.
Currently four people are working on this game, thus it is not possible to
announce some date of comlpetion at the time being.
PuzzleBOBS
In cooperation with Emanuele Cesaroni of Nexus Development
the Amiga Arena
and Fun Time World present the game in
partnership. PuzzleBOBS is about a "Bust´n Move"
clone. From now on a demo version is available on
http://www.funtime-world.de/puzzle.html
or from the support page at the Amiga Arena.
Technical backgrounds:
- PuzzleBOBS is completely configurable.
- Screenmode (AGA / OCS / ECS / Picasso96 or CyberGraphX compatible graphic boards).
- Bitplanes: up to 16- and 24Bit screens.
- Playable in three languages (German, Italian, English)
- Playable from HD, full or partly installation (min. 14 MB)
- Written in 100% assembler
- Import of own levels and sounds.
Backgrounds, bubbles, object speed, music and sound effects, explosion style,
and masses of other little things, as well, can be configured to match your own personal desire.
The game was programmed to allow different bubbles to have different characteristics.
There are bubbles that bounce back form walls, which of course simplifies severity. The
game runs in full multitasking on it's own screen or in a window on the Workbench.
When the game's window becomes inactive the game automatically turns to sleep mode,
which is a special feature to let you continue your work on the Workbench. In sleep mode
even every audio channel and colour palette get's released.
Miscellaneous
GGS Data - Amiga Show
Gunne Steen of the Swedish vendor GGS Data
informed us about an Amiga show in Göteborg, Sweden, planned to take place on
2. March 2002 (maybe also on 3. March 2002). The respective
website will be online in about seven days. Comanies and
user groups are heartily invited to attend the show as exhibitors.
Psyria - Music
Dennis Lohr gave us a CD on the show on which he eternalized his trance song for amiga-news.de. This song
also is available for download:
Amiga News Theme
(ca. 7 MB). Again thank you very much to Dennis for taking the trouble to create this song. This realy is a privilege to us!
Annex - Music
Daniel Schulz of Annex
assured us that the music group, known by several Amiga songs, still is alive.
Meantime many new pices of music were recored, extracts can be downloaded
as MP3.
Still the vocals are missing, because the band still is searching for a female singer.
She should have been singing in a band before, come from the dance/trance field, and
live in the Rhein-Main area (Germany). Interessted singers might contact
Daniel Schulz (include a demo if possible).
Two maxi-singles with three songs on each and maybe a long-player with all songs are
planned.
Virtual Dimension
The crew of Virtual Dimension
did many interviews and took many pictures for their show video. The video
is estimated to be published before Christmas.
Furthermore Virtual Dimension introduced the round and text basing space game
StarEmpire II
by Christian Becker . Up to 32 players are possible.
Airbrush Paradise Tingler
Rolf Tingler prettified diverse things with
different motives. Of course mainly motives with BoingBalls were desired. Starting from cell phones
thru Swiss pocket knives everything got "boinged" with airbrush technic.
Upshot:
Interesting hard- and software solutions were presented. There was good mood on the show
and intensive discussing everywhere. However, it is to be said that in spite of all those
innovations and in spite of the positive signs some certain questions were left without an
answer, cause neither Amiga Inc. nor Eytech or Escena attended the show. Thats where descriptions
regarding the plans of Amiga Inc. for the AmigaOne are required.
Finally one discerning word regarding the organization. The corridors along the
"focal points" on the upper floor were way to narrow. Occasionally there were such
big crowd that it was hard to get to the booths.
Christoph Dietz, Petra Struck as well as Meike Hilke (photos) were on the show for
amiga-news.de.

AMIGA 2001: IRC conferences with Nerding and Garlich (Update)
English logfiles of the IRC conferences with Markus Nerding from Haage&Partner and Michael Garlich from Titan are available now. The log from Nerdings chat has been published on ANN, he answers questions about AmigaOS XL, AmigaOS V4.0, and H&P's work within those projects.
The log of Michael Garlich's chat has been provided to us by Jürgen 'Antibike' Lucas, Garlich answers questions about MorphOS, Pegasos, and the projects of Titan:
Amiga2001: Hello Michael
Titan: Hello Guys
Nico4k: Micheal, Could please describe your plans about MorphOS/Bplan ?
Nico4k: Plan = project if you prefer
Titan: Yes of course we have presented 4 new products for Morphos / Bplan e.g. Papyrus Office and
Nico4k: For example will Papyrus be ported on MorphOs ?
Nico4k: ok
Titan: and the new videosoft Motionstudio which support DV Video
Titan: and we have also presented Rage Hard a new multiplayer tactic shooter
Nico4k: Well, you said on MorphOS ML what there will something to connect an Amiga floppy drive on Bplan made by third part, Could you give more detail ?
Nico4k: Titan sound like great news
Titan: Yes, this connecter will be able to read write "old" Amiga DD and HD Floppydisc
Nico4k: to connect an "Amgia" drive or to use old disk with the Bplan one
Nico4k: Where it will connected on the motherboard ?
Titan: to connect an "old" Amiga drive may be later also PC-Floppy with modifications too
zacman: hi michael. do you plan to release your software together with the pegasos start or already before? and are there plans for bundeling your software with pegasos?
Titan: Nico4k there is a floppy connector for PC Floppys on the Bplan mainboard
Titan: zacman: Together with the sales start on Feb/March 2002
Burman: Titan Do you know anything about support for Newtek VideoToaster/Flyer HW. (PCI-card)...?
Titan: Burman: we have asked Newtek but nothing is clear atm it will take some further negotations ga
djnick: Hi Titan will there be newer / improved versions of Fantastic Dreams?
Titan: djnick: Yes this will be released later in 2002 ga
ID4: Titan Are you planign a game like QIII Arena?
Titan: ID4: We will release a pre-video of Rage Hard take a look and you will enjoy it :) ga
Bifford: hi there ;-) what sort of speeds can we expect from pegasos? in normal operation and in real-time with cpu hungry things like 3d graphics
Titan: Bifford: This really depends on the used CPU we think for DV Videoediting a 500 G4 is the minimum. ga
Nico4k: As you devellop for MorphOS/bPlan, I suppose you already use it on Bplan, So how does it work ? (sorry for all this MOS related question but I want to konw)
Titan: Nico4k It runs really good we are sadisfied with the support of the MOrphos Team. ga
AlphaFoX: hi Titan, two questions: 1. do you know if there will be an 'AGA-on-a-Card' for the Pegasos? 2. Will
Titan: port its software also to AmigaOS 4.x if available? GA
Titan: AlphaFoX: AGA card is atm not longer in development but if there is more demand we can think about such a solution
Titan: Regarding AmigaOS 4 we have nothing heard from Amiga no specs no hardware nothing simply. We cant say we will support it if we have no information at all. Ga
Bifford: do u have any other projects on the go atm (hard or software) or is it strictly MOS/pegasos ?
Titan: Bifford: we concentrate on what is available now this is Morphos and Pegasos ga
zacman: what graphics card do you recommend for games like Rage Hard? Do you know if it is correct that bplan has contacts to nvidia?
Titan: zacman: I cant commend this atm :) ga
Zarf: is RS on the show? ga :)
Titan: Zarf: No but Frank Mariak was here ga
TheFab: Titan hi, do you plan to develop new softare or buy license (like old software like lightwave...)
Titan: TheFab: new and licencing too. E.g. AlienNations and Majesty
ID4: Titan Will you software run on Elbox SharkPPC?
Titan: ID4: We are open to support everyone who wants Morphos. If Elbox support theMorphos team with hardware then there will be also a SharkPPC version ga
Zefram_: what is the maximum cpu speed we can expect on Pegasos, 1Ghz ?
Titan: Zefram_: its upto 2GHz atm but higher clockrate are also possible ga
zacman: isn't AlienNations and Majesty licensed by hyperion?
Titan: zacman: No Hyperion has not licenced AlienN or Majesty.
Titan: owns this licence ga
Zefram_: What will are the graphics cards drivers available for Pegasos, Matrox ?
Titan: Zefram_: In a few weeks there will be update on Morphos.de with all supported Gfx-boards. ga
Nico4k: Do you think Bplan will be able to release Pegasos in February/March 2001? Not a vapor this time ? (I have been so disppointed by previous project: AmigaNG, A1). Ps: A MOS/Bplan related question again ... But who do not believe that this time is the good one ...
Titan: Nico4k Bplan will make a pre-release before christmas 2001 and the main release is trageted for March 2002. ga
Titan: Zefram_: The morphos 3d api is NOT rave ga
Nico4k: Pre-release means Developper release ?
Titan: Nico4k Also for normal customers but there is only a limited stock of boards available. ga
AmiGR: Could you enlight us about which 3d api will be used?
Titan: AmiGR: Sorry atm not, please wait for the next official Morphos press release ga
JoeAFUA: Titan So will we be able to pre-order for the pre-release boards? If yes, when?
Titan: JoeAFUA: Take a look on the bplan website there will be an "order" form. ga
ID4: Titan nowdays.. What are your contacs with Amiga Inc?
Titan: ID4: we are in touch with Amiga but they follow different ways atm. We will see if we can cooparate in future or not. ga
Zefram_: Will it be possible to place a pre-order from local dealers ?
Titan: Zefram_: No, only direct from Bplan ga
darklite: will you only support morphos, or also os4? ga
Titan: darklite: We have no information about AmigaOS4 therefore i cant say yes or no . ga
ID4: Titan THANKS !!!! From me no more questions, I hope the best for your bussines ;)
Titan: ID4: Thanks. ga
Nico4k: Will Pegasos be shit with screen, keyboard, Hard drive, Or will it be possible to buy only the Motherboard ?
Amiga2001: ship instead of shit ;-)
Titan: Nico4k shit ??? ;)) Yes it will be shipped as complete system too this will be a g3 350, 128MB ram, gfx-board,hD and DVD-drive ga
Zefram_: Will there be a Pegasos motherboard with more than 3 PCI slots ?
Titan: Nico4k and motherboard only is also available .ga
Titan: Zefram_: Yes there is a adaptor for 4 slots available.
Nico4k: Are all drivers ready (I mean for internal ethernet, audio, USB ???)
Titan: Nico4k a lot of drivers are already finished but some are still in development. ga
Amiga2001: more questions?
Nico4k: Will we show amazing think on Bplan at the show like Divx movie ?
Titan: Nico4k We have shown DV editing on the show. DIVX is also possible but was not presented. ga
Amiga2001: Ok Guys, Michael has to go
Amiga2001: thx Michael

Game: New adventure game under development, nostalgica all around Space Rat
Marcel Rohles wrote:
Who did not fell for the adventures of old tradition in the style of
Lucas Arts or Sierra?
Probably nobody can exculpate himself from this. Everyone of us once was
bound to this fever to free Guybrush from an embarrassing situation, just to
see him stumbling right into the next one.
But, what has happened to this? What about the adventure genre? Does it
have to be 3D all the time?
If you are able to unhesitant and in peace of conscience say no to the latter question,
I recommend the page about 'Space-Rat Tukult'
warmly to you.
Yes, it's true - Space Rat will come back. A mind-blowing combination of
classic adventure game and Ziggy, the Space Rat, which enriched the ASM until lastly.
By some kind words certainly the team would be willing to develop for the Amiga, too.
The news of November 17 already question that, for example.
Last but not least I would like to cite the Tukult team, for I even wasn't able to say
it better: 'So, if you also belong to those people grown up with rubber chicken with snap-hooks
underside and jerrycans on Mars, it is to say that you've discoverd the Holy Grail by comming to
this page.'
There's only one thing left for me to say in this sense: 'Ziggy to the (A)miggy!'

AMIGA 2001: Report by Stefan Popp
Stefan Popp wrote:
Here my small report about the 2001 Amiga show (absolute subjective and incomplete).
There were more booths than the last time (about 12). Unfortunately they took that good
advantage of the exhibition space, that the walks between the booths were quite narrow, which
lead to bothering tailbacks.
Bplan
Like known Bplan is creating a PPC machine. This was presented run capable.
I've seen MorphOS. Reportedly Linux was no problem, too.
A complete machine (20GB HD, 128MB RAM, ...) was said to cost about 1,000 Euro.
But the boards would be available solitary, too (from distributors, but not from BPlan
directly).
The problem about this whole thing: The system still is at beta test stage, and if
someone would order a certain amount of boards today, delivery would not be
expected before end of 1Q02. Major reason for this: It is hard to get low quantities of
the components.
To the question, how much of the specifications have been revealed, I was told, that the
computer meets the Motorola Open-Bios conception and to adapt it to
other operating systems would be no problem.
BPlan's documents consciously don't mention the Amiga, to not tie the machine
down to some special field of application.
Elbox
Showed their busboards. Again, the TV card and the TV picture was
presented as Workbench background.
Unfortunately the SharkPPC was shown inside a show-case.
Of course I asked, why this card wasn't performed. The employee illustrated,
that though development would have been finished, but it would be to wait
for AmigaOS4.0. Ermh, if I consider this, my questions actually wasn't answered by this
statement. Allegedly the card would run with WarpOS drivers, too (so please, why to
wait for 4.0). Well, doesn't make any difference, isn't that important, anyway. :).
Haage & Partner
Actually just showed Amithlon and AmigaXL on three computers.
Meal booth
Meat balls, noodle salad, coffee, and Snikers at cheap prices.
The lectures (at least those I attended)
1) Amithlon - Jürgen Haage
In advance: The room was to narrow and of bad equipment. Reportedly this also was due
to the fact, that some parts did not survive the transport to Cologne. But, after some
bricolage everything worked.
Mr. Haage explained the step to develop the Amiga emulator with the good availability of
and the cheap prices for PC hardware.
The price for the complete package is at 299DM (incl. Kick 3.1, OS 3.9, QNX,
Arteffects, AmiWriter, and StormC3.0 ).
According to Mr. Haage the development of the emulation bases on UAE. Amithlon
utilizes a Linux kernel in addition, which was said to simplify the implementation of
additional hardware. AmigaXL uses QNX as 'hosting' operating system.
2) Hyperion about the subject Amiga 4.0
Amiga Ltd. did not attend the show. And to say it honestly, nobody missed
them. Some kind of announcement sure would have coused people to shake their heads, again.
The lecture was done by the CEO of Hyperion (I just forgot the name). The facts in short:
Hyperion and H&P obtaind a license for a PPC port.
With the help of many developers (with H&P and Hyperion as the core team)
the OS will be ported step by step. At first the TCP/IP stack, Exec and possibly DOS.
Furthermore there is a new library concept.
- In the beginning memory protection will be limited to prevent access to not allocated memory.
- New Warp3D will be implemented (with Matrox-, Permedia3-, and Radon1/2 support).
- WarpInput for input device management.
- Generic PCI drivers to better integrate the different PCI boards
(hardware drivers will have to be developed only once, at last).
- USB support.
- New TCP/IP stack ('Roadshow').
- Picasso96 as standard in a PPC native version.
- It's said to run on any PPC Amiga, while Blizzard cards might suffer from low performance.
- 68k emulation (JIT version) will be integrated.
- AmigaDE will be on it.
- Java was sait to come, too (but not already in the initial version).
- Price: In the range of AmigaOS V3.5 or V3.9.
- Amiga ZorroII and ZorroIII would be supported (at least the most prevalent cards).
- PPC datatypes.
- AHI for Sound.
A version would be available from January, already.
I could not keep more in mind. Maby someone would publish the Scala presentation.
The CEO of Hyperion wasn't very optimistic in regard of AmigaOne, Shark, BPlan.
One reason to decide to port 4.0 to existing hardware and to not let down the owners of PPC cards.
The OS theoretically runs on any PPC hardware.
But nothing was performed. Explanation: Due to the still bad look one would get a bad
impression, which just would cause people to review things from a wrong point of view.
At the booth of Haage&Partner I was told, that a PPC native version of the AmigaOS
would have been possible already two years ago, but Gateway would have disliked that.
I think this is nothing new, but to celebrate the day I once more was happy about it . (sd) (Translation: mj)

AMIGA 2001: first report
To give you first impressions of the fair here's a beforehand report in which
we concentrate on current hardware products.
Highly interesting is the first official presentation of the Pegasos computer on
which the operating system MorphOS is running. Gerald Carda demonstrated us a
test program that displays plasma effects. Not accelerated (68060 speed) the
program displays 4 frames per second (FPS). The same program compiled for
MorphOS shows 192 FPS.
In conversation with Thomas Knäbel and Gerald Carda we have got still more
interesting information which we'll present comprehensive in our final
report. This beforehand:
Developer systems will be available in the beginning of January 2002, computers
for end users will follow appr. 8 -12 weeks later.
The highlight of Haage&Partner is a x86 computer built into a luxury tower
with stylish design and installed Amithlon. The corpus of the computer is of
aluminium, the front side is made of azure blue plastic.
Of course, the developers of the PCI busboards didn't miss the show, either.
Elbox presented their Mediator system and DCE the G-REX board.
Thorsten Hansen of Kato Development presented us the prototype of the Melody
successor. In addition to the functions of the Melody has this card the
following particularities:
- MP3 audios can not only be decoded in real time but alos encoded.
- Analogue mixer function
- Digital input/output (optical/coaxial)
Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computers presented us a preseries model of the
interface card VarioIO that will be available before Christmas. The Delfina
could unfortunately not be shown.
Based on a Logitech 2 buttons mouse Schönfeld has developed a real Amiga resp.
Atari mouse. Here will the production begin in the next days, too.
Michael Böhmer presented his USB controller Subway with which you can connect
common USB devices to the clock port of the A1200. Up to four external devices
can be used without any additional hub. VMC has already started with the driver development. For now there are drivers for mouse and keyboard available. Planned
are drivers for printers, digital cameras and scanners. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Fractal Graphic: FlashMandelWOS 1.5
Version 1.5 of FlashMandelWOS
has been uploaded on Aminet in gfx/fract
directory. With FlashMandel you can create fractal graphics.
This has changed in the new version:
- FlashMandel has a new Reaction-GUI. You need OS3.5 (or higher) for this feature. Now it's possible to use all features only by mouse.
- Added support for Localization for Italian and German languages, others are welcome ;-).
- A new installer-script makes it easy to install, update or delete FlashMandel.
- The ppc-routines are reworked, so the speed increases about 12%.
- Better print-routines for better output, now should be printed the whole A4 paper.
- Some minor internal changes and optimizations increasing compatibility with all future Amiga clones ;-).
- and much more...

AudioLabs: ProStationAudio Titanium demo 5.01 (Update)
ProStationAudio Titanium demo 5.01 available in
the download section.
- fixed Play Object and Play Region (were routed to the wrong busses resulting in noise)
- correctly loads older format projects, useful for tutorials
- variable bitrate DSP plugins now fully supported
- added "mouse-over" help text for new console buttons
As both the "project format" and "variable bitrate" modifications remove the
chances of possible system crashes, it's strongly recommended to replace the
older demo with the new 5.01 version.

Amiga Forever now available from individual Computers
The Amiga emulation package Amiga Forever is now available as a bundle
with the Catweasel ISA controller. Amiga Forever turns your PC into an
Amiga. The package which is available since 1997, includes a license of
all Amiga-patents, trademarks and copyrights that are necessary for an
emulation. Therefore, an official Amiga Notebook "Powered by Amiga" is
available since 1997.
Amiga Forever makes all the hardware of the base system also available
on the Amiga side: Virtual memory, Fast- and GBit Ethernet, sound- and
graphics boards as well as DVD and USB.
Further information about Amiga Forever can be found on the publisher's
website http://www.cloanto.com/.
Individual Computers will continue to support both Amiga Forever and its
developers. There will be no support for the QNX version of Amiga OS XL
for the Catweasel ISA in the near future, whereas for Amithlon we will
provide a software that uses the ISA Catweasel just like a real Amiga
Catweasel.
Amiga Forever developers are even going a step further, they use the
Catweasel to emulate the internal Amiga diskdrive.

Emulation: Playstation emulator FPSE 0.09, Amiga Revision 2
Mathias Roslund has released a new version of the Playstation emulator FPSE. It is the second Amiga-version which is based on version 0.09. You need a Playstation Bios-rom to emulate. There are some screenshots to the Amiga-version.
It follows the original message:
A new release with some bugfixes and added features. Memory card support
is fixed, and compiler (dynarec) and PSX Port support has been added.
There is also a switch to use READ_CD for CD support. This was used by
some of the FPSE/Amiga 0.08 revisions and might work better than CMD_READ
with some CD-ROMs.

First routines of Project Crashsite on the Amiga 2001
Here are two news on the Project Crashsite status:
On the Amiga 2001 there will be the first routines of Project Crashsite to
look at. There will be the rudimentary playable combat and the space flight
will invite to fly along the planets of Future II. I hope for many visitors and would
be happy about numerous suggestions and comments.
The poll on www.projektcrash.de (title link) turned out that five of six
votees prefer a PPC version.
As a first answer to this I would like to announce the following:
- The interlude animations in the game will be MPEG animations.
- Mathias Roslund gave permission to use AMP for playing the animations
in Project Crashsite, which makes an effective animation player for PPC and
CGFX available for the game!

Amiga Arena: PuzzleBOBs
In cooperation with Emanuele Cesaroni, Nexus Development, the Amiga Arena and
Fun Tim World present the game PuzzleBOBS, which is about a "Bust'n Move" clone
to be available on the "AMIGA 2001" show.
From now on the demo version is available on
http://www.funtime-world.de/puzzle.html,
and on the support page of the Amiga Arena.
About PuzzleBOBS
The game was developed by the Italian software company Nexus Development which
was founded by Emanuele Cesaroni. Worldwide distribution will be done by
Fun Time World in cooperation with the Amiga Arena.
Previews of "PuzzleBOBS" can be found in the current issue of the "Amiga Future" #33 (German Amiga Game print magazine), and in "No Cover" issue #88 (German Amiga disk magazine).
Technical background and more:
PuzzleBOBS is completely configuralbe:
- Screen mode (AGA / OCS / ECS / Picasso96 or CyberGraphX comaptible graphic boards).
- Bitplanes (up to 16 and 24bit screens).
- Playable in three languages (German, Itatlian, English).
- Playable from HD, full or partial installation (min. 14 MB).
- Written in 100% assembler.
- Level and sound import.
Backgrounds, bubbles, object speed, music and sound effects, explosion style, and masses of
other little things, as well, can be configured to match your own personal desire.
The game was programmed to allow different bubbles to have different characteristics. There are
bubbles that bounce back form walls, which of course simplifies severity. The game runs in full
multitasking on it's own screen or in a window on the Workbench.
When the game's window becomes inactive the game automatically turns to sleep mode, which is
a special feature to let you continue your work on the Workbench. In sleep mode even every audio channel and colour palette get's released - pure culture multitasking. Further and detailed informaiton can be found in the demo version's guide.

Nostalgica: Amiga Graphics artist + programmer Jim Sachs
While looking around the news pages of CHIP.DE
I found a link to the aquarium screensaver in the news on the new Windows XP and
it's "self-made plus package". This screensaver was programmed by Jim Sachs.
Until then I had no idea of this name, but as I then looked at "About the Author" (title link)
on the serenescreen.com website, some
known pictures of the author from Amiga days turned up. A link on this page shows
many pictures of his
work history, too.
With another link on the same site the Amiga is mentioned again in an
interview.
To smile:
To the surprised interviewer's questions, how it comes that the download of this
emotive Windows screensaver is just about 600k in size:
RADEONIC: Probably one of the things that surprised me most was the size of
the download. Did you spend a lot of time optimising the code, and did you
have any special tricks for compressing textures?
JS: No, I haven't really started to optimize the code yet. Coming from
the Amiga, where everything had to fit on a 770k floppy, I am utterly
amazed at how huge PC apps have become. What could these programmers
possibly be filling up all those megabytes with? The whole ascii source
code for the program? The phone book for their area code?
It was a pleasure to me to accidently stumble upon this programmer and those Internet sites and
thereby to learn, that he still likes the Amiga, allthough he changed the system.

just now on St.Martin's day I have some bad and good news for you.
The bad: I will stop development of StopMenu.
In the last weeks I worked with full power on StopMenu - only to rename the
variables and functions (some still polish or whatever), to add some
commentaries (there were quiet none) and to try to change some parts. As
final surprise one of many tests made my Amiga crash and thereby destroyed
the source code, the work of many days. This and the belief that
changing StopMenu is harder and needs more time than writing an own program
caused my decision. StopMenu was not only bad written and commented (well,
it has grown piecewise and has got the errors from both programmers ;) -
no, it also has some very restricting, old fashioned program parts that
should be replaced by a modern method.
Before you get the possibility to jump out of the window, here's the good
news:
One learns from each error. I've seen so many errors ;) that I now want to
make Choowin replace StopMenu !! It is written in best C++, uses Reaction,
and last but not least I know what I have programmed. And that's not all -
the prefs part of StopMenu is not forgotten, but replaced by a connection
to MainPrefs !! So both programs will form the beginning of the new
environment, where also ClassAction can join. The new project will consist
of the taskbar with start menu that allows to open the prefs and later the
file manager. Other programs will have the possibility to get an icon in
the taskbar.
That's a lot - but the three programs exist, Choowin will grow to StopMenu's
functionality (well, not exactly the same) and all of them will be joined to
the new MRE ("mainmenu with Reaction enhancements").
You can find a first screenshot of the startmenu on my homepage, the
first version will be available soon.
Regards,
Martin»

Programming: ODK updated
Marius Schwarz released a new version of the OOP4A developer kit, which
allows to use any not object oriented programming language,
which is able to use Amiga shared libraries, for object programming.
The update contains new classes, a strongly enhanced OOP pre-processor,
and some useful attachments.
The online documentation got some additional diagrams, which give a
better and plainer view of the principle of function, especially in
connection with the class sources.

(thanks to Herve Dupont for decompression!)
- fixed default tool to be more OS conform
(thanks to Harry Sintonen for hint)

(if you get "suspicious actions" message each time
you execute Safe please report)
- WatchDog v1.3: watch doc
Integrity:
In one sentence:
there is no integrity check this time, as it is now under heavy
construction/bugfixing as COMP and CHECK will become one GUI based
program and which of course someday has to become part of MILL - new
antivirus initiative which seems to be almost dead now :(
'Safe' runs on AmigaOS V2.04+ and requires the xvs.library.
The "Amiga Virus Encyclopedia"
has been extended with new virus translations.
They are still looking for translation help. Who would like to translate some
German virus texts to English might contact

SimpleMail V0.12
SimpleMail V0.12 released.
Due to an exploit in MUI in combination with some PIPE-handlers
we have released a new version now, everybody actually should
update, as the old version has a really nasty security problem.
The changes are:
- Fix for the MUI exploit.
- Messages can be also encrypted with PGP 2.6.x.
- Switching away of columns in the message list is possible now.
(save it via "Save Prefs")
- Completation of email-addresses improved.
- A small menu added to the readwindow that makes it possible to
see the raw mail.
- Mousewheel support of the readwindow is more tolerant now.
- The attachments are better identified if you have OS3.9
and DefIcons. You can double-click on an icon to start an
action (needs also OS3.9 and DefIcons, e.g. double-click on an
archive will start UnArc in the default config of DefIcons).
- Printing of messages and text-attachments is possible now.

Serious security leak in MUI Internet programs? (update)
Following the title link you find an English written document that reveals a severe
security leak in MUI programs.
Programs displaying text by using a MUI text object can be forced to execute
Shell commands via active PIPE: devices with particular escape sequences. To say
it clearly: It's theoretically possible to force for example YAM via a mail with
specifically manipulated subject line to delete files on the computer of the
receiving person.
It's not an error in MUI or AwnPIPE:/APIPE:, it should be the task of the
programmers to filter such sequences before displaying text received via the
Internet.
As first security measure it is recommended not to use affected programs
anymore or not to mount AwnPIPE:/APIPE: devices during the boot process (remove all PIPE:
icons from SYS:Devs/DosDrivers/).
Affected applicationen are for example YAM and StrICQ.
Not affected are the products of Vaporware, obviously the ESC sequences get
already filtered here (it's not said from which program versions on).
Update:
Jens Langner, one of the
lead programmers of YAM, points out that a hotfix is already in the works and
that there'll soon be a 2.3 fix release removing this security leak in YAM.
Update II:
Hynek Schlawack and Sebastian
Bauer will as soon as possible release a fix for SimpleMail.
Update III:
As the original text shows seems this exploit danger to be not given using PIPE: as this
doesn't offer any start possibilities: "The standard AmigaOS PIPE: is not
affected since it is incapable of executing commands". Therefore was the above text changed
accordingly. (ps) (Translation: wk)

New version of AmigAIM has been uploaded to the normal locations, as well as

- I think I removed the main possibility for the APIPE: exploit to happen by
filtering the escape characters from incoming messages/profiles before
display. (I didn't even have APIPE: Installed until checking)
- Don't even attempt to send messages that will cause the exploit, I know of
several locations that if the exploit is input, it can strike back at your

The availability of links to the official Aminet mirrors depends on Urban

features have been added (thanks once again to the testers!). Added have been the search for complete words, the search only in specific directories, the selection of different target mirrors and much more.
There won't be an output of the found text passages as the computer operations group of the computer science faculty of the TU Munich partout doesn't want to increase my quota and the search engine with 181 MB uses already one third of it :-\

was originally planned as an add-on but because of the many requests

functions are mail merge, control over compression in PDF files,
text inset function, object transformation and a higher speed.
The most important new functions:
- Table editor
- Built in Mail Merge
- PDF export control over compression and encoding
- Text inset from column edges
- Custom column widths and gutters inside text frames
- Shift-cursor text selection
- Move pages between chapters
- Duplicate/Transform objects across pages
- Speed improvements
- and of course much more
Windows, Amiga and Macintosh versions

FREAX - The demoscene history book
Ever wondered who wrote the first demos? Who was the first to crack a game,
or who invented nowadays' beautiful effects seen in demos? When and how was
the scene born, and who were the first pioneers to pave the road to nowadays'
superproductions?
Ever wanted to see a book about the history of the demoscene?
I mean a printed book, not another website. Not another book about hackers,
and surely not another try to explain the essence of the scene for the lame
general public. A book about the scene for sceners, covering the story of
all platforms: the C-64, the Amiga, the PC and also smaller scenes, like
consoles, Sinclairs, the Apple and so on. From the beginning to present
days, covering every single bit of the great adventure, a narrative history
with interviews, memories, stories, colorful pictures...
A book titled FREAX.
After five years of intense researching, the product is starting to shape.
Read more about it on this website; read a sample chapter and perhaps you
can even find a way to help me. This is something special, something
different: something no one ever tried in this depth.

AMidi: New localisations
The preferences of AMidi, the device to paly MIDI music, has got more languages by the help of ATO.
All in all there are available English (built in), German, Czech, French, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, and Turkish.
The installation script was updated respectively, but strongly requires the InstallerNG in the original installer due to a heavy bug. There is a licensed version inside of the archive, now. For those already have AMidi installed there is a small (7 kByte) archive available only containing the translations. Thank you very much for your work, ATO.

Update-MACH for Buddha Flash IDE Controller
The update for the Buddha Flash Controller which has been announced already for the last year is now available: The controller works fine in a RBM Zorro-Daughterboard for the A1200 (OnBoard Ex). Besides this there are some changes concerning the timing that saves the functions of the Silversurfer on the extension ports.
Unfortunately the update is not free because it is a failure which has been not caused by us. From now on new controllers will be sold without surcharge, old ones can be equipped with a new MACH for 19,- EUR.

First software for VarIO interface card
On the support section of the website of individual Computers you can
find a first archive with software for the new IO-board VarIO. The driver also recognizes the serial interface Silversurfer and thus replaces the old silversurfer.device. The installer script is easy to understand and in two languages. Before you install it you should delete the silversurfer.device but the hardware should keep to be installed.

Interview with Ben Hermans from Hyperion
Interview with Ben Hermans - Managing Director, Hyperion Entertainment
Done by Christoph Gutjahr - 07.11.2001
Amiga-News: First of all, thanks a lot for your efforts to bring us OS 4.0.
Let's start with some technical questions. Are the OS 4.0/4.2 features
outlined in the tech updates on www.amiga.com and various press releases
from Alan Redhouse still valid? Will you have to put some stuff "on
hold" to match the deadline (e.g. USB support)? Or may we even get some
new (minor) goodies to play with?
Ben Hermans: The feature list which can be found on Amiga.com is still essentially correct
but can be considered a bare minimum. We intend to deliver more if we can. More
details will follow.
Amiga-News: Which of the following models is the better description of AmigaOS 4.0's
concept:
- a WarpUp kernel running an "AmigaOS-Box", meaning that PPC tasks are
running in a WarpOS environment while 68k tasks are executed by
exec.library
- an exec.library that is able to execute both 68k and ppc tasks, plus
an "emulation layer" for existing WarpOS applications
Ben Hermans: [2]. OS 4 will not be WarpOS based. WarpOS was a solution for a dual CPU architecture
and isn't suitable for what we have in mind. We will ofcourse provide full backwards
compatibility with WarpOS programs.
Amiga-News: There are rumours that Harry "Piru" Sintonen is working on the OS4.0 exec.library?
Ben Hermans: This is incorrect.
Amiga-News: Could you describe the current state of the AmigaOS sources? Years ago,
Jeff Schindler claimed that "it's a complete and ugly mess". I read a
German Interview with Juergen Haage, where he stated that they cleaned up
most of the Kickstart sources and they were able to recompile them in
one go. What's your personal experience (or that of your programmers)?
How much of the core parts are available in C and can actually be
recompiled for PPC? Are there parts that must be rewritten from scratch
(e.g. because they're only available as 68k ASM)? Are there any plans
to use AROS code for OS4.0 (if neccessary)?
Ben Hermans: Olaf Barthel and H&P did an outstanding job by cutting down the number of compilers
required to compile the OS, cleaning up the OS 3.1 source-code and moving code from ASM to C.
Whilst there still are some parts which are in ASM, this is a minority. Olaf also put the
entire source-code in to a CVS repository which is a tremendous asset.
We have talked to Aaron Digulla who was very helpful and is generally a nice guy and we have
come to an agreement about using parts of AROS if need be.
Amiga-News: Alan Redhouse announced that OS4.0 will also run on existing
CyberstormPPC accelerator boards. What about the BlizzardPPC boards? I
assume they won't be supported, is this due to performace issues or are
there problems with the FlashROMs of those cards (as some people
supposed)?
Ben Hermans: We haven't ruled out the Blizzard PPC's completely but we must first be satisfied with the
performance of OS 4 on these machines. There are indeed some technical issues that need to
be solved before support of the Blizzard line of cards can be contemplated.
Amiga-News: OS4 available for Classic PPC Amigas - that brings up another question:
Which PCI solutions will be supported? I assume that Elbox and Matay
will be supported, as they are "Amiga partners". What about DCE's GRex
Boards? Are you (or Amiga Inc.) in contact with DCE?
Ben Hermans: We intend to support the widest possible range of MODERN hardware including the available
PCI busboards. It can't be ruled out that drivers for older hardware will break under
emulation but generally we expect no problems.
Amiga-News: What's your intended "information policy"? I suppose there's not much
to demonstrate for now (i.e. only an A4000PPC running an OS that looks
and feels exactly like AmigaOS 3.x), will you go quiet until the
AmigaOne/OS4 combination can be demonstrated? Or will there be some
kind of "progress meter" on your/Amiga's website or regular press
releases?
Ben Hermans: We intend to release regular progress reports.
Amiga-News: Will developer documentation be available for free?
Ben Hermans: We intend to encourage people to develop for OS 4. Developer documentation will therefore be
available at production cost.
Amiga-News: Does the agreement that was signed on the WOA-SE only deal with OS4.0 or
did some/all of the parties involved commit to contribute to the further
development of the OS?
Ben Hermans: I cannot comment on the terms of the agreement but suffice it to say that OS 4.0 is just a
step in a continuous process whereby the OS gradually gets moved from 68K to PPC with full
backwards compatibility, whereby the OS is untied from the custom chipsets and whereby modern
functionality is introduced along the way.
Amiga-News: Hyperion are known for their strict "no AmigaOS for x86" Attitude. You
are now a key developer of OS4, and you develop the 3D API. We don't
know much of the proposed specs of OS5, but we know that it will be
available for several platforms, including x86. Will your intellectual
property (e.g. the Warp3D and OpenGL implementations) be a available for OS5?
Ben Hermans: It's true that we are no fans of the x86 architecture for reasons we have outlined before and
which have to do with Windows smothering all competition. Recent developments such as the demise
of BeOS, the sale by Corel of its Linux activities and the bankruptcy of Loki, the largest
games-developer for Linux, have only reinforced our view.
Talk about OS 5 is a bit premature at this point so we will reserve judgement until things are
a bit more concrete.
Amiga-News: I assume most of your staff is working on OS4 now. How does that affect
your other products? E.g., what's the scheduled release date for
"Descent Freespace"? Will other projects (Realsoft 3D, Worms
Armageddon) be put on hold until OS 4.0 is finished?
Ben Hermans: Our resources are obviously not unlimited and OS4 development will have an impact. It should
however be realised that it isn't the case that work on OS 4 is only now starting or that
Hyperion will be doing all the work. Most OS 3.5 and 3.9 developers are already onboard and
we have a good working relationship with the AROS team which will help cut down on development
time.
Amiga-News: Looking at Hyperion's projects and reading statements from your employees
about the sales of Linux and Amiga products, one could wonder that
Hyperion still exists ;-) If I understood that correctly, you won't be
paid in advance for OS4 (Alan Redhouse: "no upfront costs for Amiga
Inc."). There must be a point were you can't stretch any further, even
for Hyperion? Is a "success" of OS4 crucial to the future of the
company Hyperion?
Ben Hermans: No. The vast majority of Hyperion's revenue comes from paid contract-work for Mac OS 9/X.
The Amiga market alone cannot sustain a company with several full-time developers.
Obviously, the more successful the project is, the more time we can allocate for Amiga
development, time which is now spent doing contract-work.
Amiga-News: Thanks a lot for this interview and good luck for the future.

Goodbye Clubbed... Hello Total Amiga Magazine
South Essex Amiga Link is happy to confirm the announcements about our
future plans for Clubbed magazine made at the World of Amiga South
East Show on the 3rd of November. In the next few months we plan to
make two major improvements to the magazine:
A New Name
From issue 10 "Total Amiga" will be the new name for Clubbed magazine,
we hope that this name better reflects the fact that we are a general
Amiga magazine and will encourage new readers to give us a try. Along
with the new name the magazine will have an extensive redesign but
will retain the essential feature of Clubbed, honest down-to-earth
writing by real Amiga users.
Bimonthly Publication
With the changes at Amiga Active, Total Amiga is the only regular UK
print classic Amiga magazine (as far as we are aware). To help fill
this role we want to publish the magazine more regularly, therefore we
will be looking to move to bimonthly publication as soon as possible.
The main barrier to this is the number of writers on the magazine so
in the coming months we will be actively seeking more contributors and
we hope to work with the French magazine Amiga Power to share content
(translated both ways). Whatever happens issue 10 will still be three
months after issue 9 (just published) because we have to transform
Clubbed into Total Amiga as well as create the new issue.
About Total Amiga
So far we have published 9 issues of Clubbed and the magazine has been
praised for its quality and production values. Each issue has 44 or
more A4 pages, a colour cover and is professionally printed. At World
of Amiga South East both Fleecy Moss of Amiga and Alan Redhouse of
Eyetech endorsed Total Amiga and you can expect to see articles from
them in future issues.
The magazine is entirely produced on the Amiga, written by enthusiasts
and operates on a not-for-profit basis. We are committed to covering
all aspects of the Amiga market and all products aimed at Amiga users
in a totally impartial manner.
A 4 issue subscription to Total Amiga costs £14 including UK postage
and single trial issues are available for £3.50 inclusive. Overseas
subscriptions are available, please see our web site for rates. You
can order direct from SEAL by cheque or postal order or via credit
card through Forematt Home Computing
(http://www.forematt.free-online.co.uk) or on-line at Kicksoft
(http://www.kicksoft.co.uk).
For more information including details of all back issues please
visit: http://www.seal-amiga.co.uk and click on the Clubbed section.
An all-new Total Amiga web site with its own domain name will be
on-line before the first issue is published.

Linda Godwin astronaut speaker at Amiga99 going into space & info on show
Bob Scharp wrote:
All of you who attended the Amiga99© Computer show,
hosted by Amigan-St. Louis's Bob and Diana Scharp in
St. Louis, MO a few years back, will certainly remember
the banquet. Dr. Linda Godwin, a current astronaut and
her husband, Col. Steve Nagel (retired USAF), a former
astronaut and current NASA employee, were two unforgettable
speakers. Linda not only spoke of her exploits in the
space program, she brought a video that blew our
(Amiga) socks off.
Well, it's Linda's turn to go into space again. I have
heard that she is scheduled to launch November 29. The
mission calls for her and several other astronauts to
go to the new space station, and return several days later.
I know I speak for all of you when I say that Diana and
I wish her the very best flight and a soft touchdown
back on earth.

First test runs of PowerPC G5 gain 2.4 GHz
According to an unconfirmed report on "The Register" two prototypes of
the PowerPC 8500 (G5) of Motorola have gained the level of 2,4 GHz of

Filemanager: ClassAction V4.31
Martin R. Elsner released version 4.31 of his filemanager 'ClassAction'. The following changes were made:
- Bugfixes: Icon-commands now using the correct filename, GETSIZE displays the correct size and SNAPSHOT also works now.
- The zoom-button takes ClassAction into the fullsize-mode.
ClassAction recognizes about 40 fileformats (gif, jpeg, iff, mods, ...). This lets you perform actions like viewing, execute and edit by clicking on the file. Additional
filetypes can easily be added.
The program needs AmigaOS 3.5 or higher and a 68020 CPU.

Emulator: WinUAE V08.17 Release 3
Since yesterday, at the
download section
of the WinUAE homepage version 08.17 release 3 of the Amiga emulator is available.
The following errors are known in this version:
- Snapshot (save-state) support is not 100% yet.
- Picasso96 colour-fades are especially slow.
- Only Lemmings 3 AGA's playing screen is centered correctly,
"Lemming-mode" selection buttons on bottom of screen are still
corrupted. (AGA bitplanes do not steal copper's DMA cycles correctly
yet)
- Also Banshee AGA's scoreboard is still invisible because sprites
outside playfields (AGA only feature, not yet implemented) are
always hidden.
Gegenüber der vorigen Version hat sich Folgendes geändert:
- FIXED: Mouse trails are gone gone gone.
- FIXED: No longer crashes in windowed-mode on XP Themed-view.
- FIXED: 68020+ bitfield instruction fix (stuck doors in Dungeon Master AGA)
- FIXED: Fix garbage display on Venus the Flytrap and Nightbreed Interactive
Movie. (Toni Wilen)
- FIXED: Trying to delete a non-empty directory will now properly return
ERROR_DIRECTORY_NOT_EMPTY. (Bernd Roesch)
- FIXED: Renaming a directory which was opened then closed will no longer
crash. (Bernd Roesch)
- FIXED: Increased the range of addresses checked for memory-mapping, in
order to make JIT "direct" mode work on more systems. (Bernd
Roesch)
- FIXED: Selecting a Picasso96 8-bit mode in windowed-mode would complain
about not matching your desktop's depth, and switch to full-screen.
- FIXED: CD-ROM Mounting should work again.
- FIXED: Installer won't install when WinUAE is already running.
- FIXED: Right-click and "Editting" a .UAE config-file will now result in
the correct config-name and config-description in the GUI.
- FIXED: MIDI-Out won't crash external MIDI drivers like "hubies loopback".
(Bernd Roesch)
- ADDED: Jose's modifications to the sound routines and GUI. (Jose Gil)
NOTE: Read doc called "SoundSyncro Readme.rtf"
- ADDED: AHI driver support. (Bernd Roesch)
- ADDED: Option to disable use of overlays completely.
- CHANGED: Floppy-disk emulation, including .FDI support. (Toni Wilen)
- CHANGED: Picasso96 licensing/support notice (above).
- CHANGED: Removed references to "Amiga" in the GUI.
Download: WinUAE0817R3.exe (1,3M)
