Amiga-Emulator: Amiberry-Lite 5.8.0 RC1
Blitter Studio, the developers of the popular Amiga emulator Amiberry, which was specially designed for ARM-based single-chip systems such as the Raspberry Pi, the Odroid XU4 or the ASUS Tinkerboard, have presented the first release candidate version (RC1) of Amiberry-Lite 5.8.0. This optimised version is aimed at systems with lower CPU performance that cannot benefit from the advanced features of the upcoming version 7.0 of Amiberry.
The release candidate of version 5.8.0 of Amiberry-Lite combines several previous updates for the RC versions of Amiberry 7.
A DEB package is now available to make installation easier, which creates a separate directory for Amiberry-Lite under $HOME. Amiberry and Amiberry-Lite can thus be used in parallel.
In addition, the GUI library, the emulation of the serial interface and the support for HDD, CD and tape drives have been updated, along with other changes.
The available binaries are currently only available for Debian-based ARM and ARM64 (aarch64) platforms. The supported Debian versions are Bookworm and Bullseye, as older versions have not been supported for some time.
In addition to the executable files for the CPU and operating system combinations mentioned, the developer also provides the complete source code on GitHub. (nba)

Video: Introduction of "PiStorm68k" and "AmiCube 1200"
Ranko Rodic presented the current status of two of his projects a week ago: the "PiStorm68k" and the "AmiCube F1200".
The "PiStorm68k" can accommodate any Raspberry Pi, including the 3B+, thanks to its newly designed form factor. In addition to an integrated WIFI module and a RealTimeClock, the board also contains a DIP64 slot to accommodate a real 68000 CPU. Using a simple switch, it is possible to switch back and forth between the PiStorm and the 68000 CPU.
After some introductory videos (1, 2), Ranko Rodic also shows the final version of his computer project called "AmiCube F1200". It is to be a state-of-the-art FPGA computer that uses a Spartan 6 FPGA and is being specially developed for compatibility with Amiga. Among other things, it is said to offer "AGA support, stellar CPU performance, MIDI capabilities, 64MB RAM for seamless multitasking, USB support for convenient connectivity, and Joystick DB 9 support". It also has enhanced floppy interface capabilities.
As soon as the prototype has been successfully tested, porting of the AGA core will begin. (dr)

RTG driver: P96 3.5.0
Press release: The new version 3.5.0 contains driver updates for Trio64 (Cybervision), IMSG300 (Visiona) and ET4000 (Merlin/oMNiBus) cards. In addition, there are three new drivers for Vooodoo Banshee, Voodoo 3 and Voodoo 4/5-based graphics cards. This requires a PCI daughterboard with OpenPCI.library, which is not part of the P96 package, but can be downloaded for free.
V3.5.0 also contains the first driver for the framebuffer mode of Indivision ECS V4. This driver requires a processor with MMU and an installed MMU library. Please note that your Indivision ECS V4 requires an updated FPGA core - this can be found in our Wiki and can be installed with the Indivision Configtool. Screen modes with 256 colors, 15/16-bit (Hi-colour) modes with over 65000 colors, as well as screen dragging of two screens are supported. Automatic panning is also supported for oversized screens. Please note that Indivision ECS V4 does not yet have a blitter, and therefore the speed of this driver is still comparatively low.
All changes are summarized in the wiki article about P96.
Unfortunately, we are still having problems with the store system, so we have not even tried to add the new files to the database. Even if it takes a little longer, we will send the new versions by e-mail - not only on request, but also pro-actively to customers who are in the free update phase. (cg)

Amiga disks on PC: Copy program G-Copy 0.6pre
Almost three years ago (amiga-news.de reported), developer Arne Urbaniak presented his copy program G-Copy for reading and writing Amiga ADF data on a Windows PC. G-Copy, which is visually similar to the popular X-Copy, supports the drive controllers Greaseweazle by Keir Fraser, ADF-Drive by D. Tonn or DrawBridge (Arduino) by Rob Smith.
In the new version 0.6pre, up to two Greaseweazle drives are now recognised and it is possible to read and write from DF0: to DF1: and vice versa. A repeat function has also been added. It is now possible to write from the HD to DF0: and DF1: at the same time. As a little treat and at the request of a user, there is also an X-MAS version of G-Copy. Finally, automatic update detection has been implemented. (dr)

SCSI for Raspberry Pi: SCSI2Pi 5 released as a pre-release
A new version of the SCSI2Pi emulation software is available as a pre-release. SCSI2Pi is an alternative to the well-known PiSCSI software for the PiSCSI/RaSCSI board, which brings SCSI technology to the Raspberry Pi. According to developer Uwe Seimet, the software offers optimised device emulation, higher transfer rates and numerous new functions, including tools for the SCSI initiator mode.
The software emulates several SCSI and SASI devices such as hard disks, CD-ROM drives, printers and network interfaces. It supports classic systems such as Amiga, Atari ST/TT/Falcon030, 68k Macs or Unix workstations and also offers a SCSI-to-USB bridge. Thanks to compatibility with the PiSCSI Web UI and the SCSI Control Android app, users can access advanced functionality.
With SCSI2Pi, users can seamlessly switch between PiSCSI and the new software by simply installing an optimised binary package – without complicated compilation steps.
The current version 4.1 of SCSI2Pi has been available since the beginning of December, and now version 5.0 has been released as a pre-release. It offers the following changes:
- New device type SCSG, with support for a SCSI-to-USB bridge. The bridge supports any SCSI command, not only those emulated by s2p. With some devices you can even burn DVDs.
- Extended streamer support, e.g. of SIMH-compatible tape image files, filemarks, spacing, variable block sizes, ...
- Tape dump/restore support. With s2pdump you can convert any tape into a SIMH-compatible image file and vice versa.
- s2p can create command scripts for s2pexec.
- The maximum number of data bytes to log can be configured with s2p and s2pexec.
- s2pexec and s2pdump now also support devices which are managed by the Linux SG driver. For these devices no Pi is required, i.e. you can use s2pexec and s2pdump on any Linux platform.
- s2psimh tool for the analysis and creation of SIMH-compatible image files. This tool runs on any Linux/BSD platform and on macOS.
- s2pformat tool for formatting floppy disks or other media, e.g. in USB drives. This tool runs on any Linux platform.
The software can be downloaded from the SCSI2Pi-website. All the latest source codes can also be found on the GitHub project page. (nba)

A600GS: Video update from Proteque on the development status
After his video from summer on image and music editing with the Orange Pi-based Amiga clone A600GS from AmigaKit, in which he still had to report on various problems, 'Proteque' has now followed up and taken a look at the current status of the system.
His conclusion: A lot has happened, updates are coming regularly and the A600GS now fulfills what he had previously expected. It would therefore be an inexpensive way to try out AmigaOS or to play a game with a real joystick and a real Amiga keyboard. (snx)

Bugfix for the MHI driver for MAS-player
Thomas Wenzel wrote: "There was a bug in the MHI driver for the MAS player that caused some of the RS232 handshake lines to become misaligned at startup. This has now been fixed: The driver now leaves the serial interface completely alone.
The error was noticed because there is a project that uses one of the RS232 lines to control an HDMI switch. Unfortunately, the switching status was always overwritten when the driver was started.
Happy New Year! :)" (cg)

Emulated Amiga: Amigakit announces A1200NG, special price for pre-orders
In a press release (PDF), Amigakit announces the "A1200NG", which, like the A600GS available since August, is apparently based on an ARM-based Orange Pi motherboard running a Linux-based Amiga emulator - hardware performance and software setup are therefore exactly the same as its little brother. The highlight of the A1200NG: The "breakout board", into which the Orange Pi is plugged and which extends it with various connections, has the exact dimensions of an Amiga 1200 board and is therefore installed in an original or reproduced A1200 keyboard housing.
Instead of a PCMCIA slot, the A1200NG features a CompactFlash slot, the connection for an external floppy disk drive is replaced by two USB ports. While there is still a composite video connector, there is currently "no driver support" for it. The A1200NG provides an HDMI signal by default, which is routed to the expansion slot below the A1200 floppy disk drive - a corresponding slot bracket is included with the purchase.
The A1200NG comes with an Amiga-compatible joystick port as standard, but the adjacent mouse/joystick port is located on an extra board which must be purchased separately. The parallel port and TV modulator have been omitted.
In addition to Bluetooth and WLAN, the A1200NG board also has connections for an original A1200 keyboard and a real Amiga floppy disk drive, but the use of USB keyboards and floppy disk drives (including Greaseweazle) is also possible.
Delivery is planned for the first quarter of 2025, but pre-orders are already being accepted. The motherboard is available for a special introductory price of around 163 euros until January 20, after which it will cost 192 euros. A plastic foil for insulation against a metal shielding plate (4.60 euros), a LED adapter (10.70 euros), a 2nd joystick connector (8.05 euros) or a larger micro SD card (128 instead of 64 GB, 8.30 euros) are available for an additional charge. Amigakit does not currently offer matching A1200 cases or keyboards. (cg)

Preview video: Danmaku #8 (bullet hell shooter)
"Danmaku" is the Japanese name for the game genre ‘Bullet Hell’, the term is also used as the working title for the shooter originally known as ‘Hyperborea’, which is being developed by Daniel ‘Daytona675x’ Müßener (code), Holger Crome (graphics) and Roland ‘Triace’ Voss (music).
The eighth preview video is intended to illustrate the current status; according to Müßener, the following changes have been made since the last version:
- muzzle flash is now integrated into the player ships, so no hard gaps here anymore. Made it procedurally during loading so that the respective assets can still be easily edited.
- blinking hitbox on player ships (maybe I'll put that a few pixels down)
- new pseudo-ground enemy mode. The spiders at the beginning of the test-level use that mode. Physically such enemies are drawn on playfield 2 (so they can have their own palette without touching PF1), but they don't cast a shadow and the player-sprites appear on top of them, even though stuff on PF2 has the highest priority. Useful for hords of small ground enemies like tanks or so.
- blockable enemy lasers. Those are big growing laser-streaks which can be blocked by using the fat laser weapon mode. Similarities to Dodonpachi Resurrection are purely coincidential ;)
- player-shots vs enemies collision system now supports some flags to adjust the vulnerability to the player's weapons. So e.g. an enemy can be made very vulnerable to the spread-shot and less vulnerable to the fat laser.
- flicker shadows (stable shadows still available in the video options). For two reasons: 1. it gives the gfx artist more freedom regarding the ground palettes because unavoidable brightness "errors" become less noticable. 2. Performance, of course. Most of the time stable shadows aren't a problem, but sometimes they may be. And in such cases I prefer flicker-shadows like in Dodonpachi over cutting down the action.
- The test-boss has 30 colors now, not just 15.
- volumes for all types of sounds adjustable (before it was just the bonus sound volume)
- prepared for 2-channel music by only using channels 2/3 for sfx (unless music is disabled, then all 4 channels are used for sfx). Concrete sfx channel and priority also depend on whether 2 players are active.
- lots of fixes :-)

Universal PCI driver system: OpenPCI 12.7 (update)
Thomas 'Thor' Richter's universal PCI driver system "OpenPCI" supports all known PCI solutions for the Amiga without recourse to the software of the respective manufacturer. The current version contains the following changes:
- 12.7: The ReserveMemSpace function in PCI-Configuration could
hang forever if a bridge does not support access to the
low memory PCI area and reservation failed.
- 12.7: In case address space allocation for a BAR fails, the
corresponding device is disabled, excluded from further
reservations and removed from the listed device list now.
- 12.7: Translation between 68K addresses and PCI addresses is now
aware of the memory region reserved by ReserveMemSpace
and maps addresses below the reservation limit through,
regardless whether any BAR actually uses the region.
- 12.3: lspci sources included the wrong header,
is BSD-only, should be which is POSIX.
- 12.3: Fixed a defect in the mediator emulation setup.
- 12.2: The "lspci" program accepts now an additional argument,
namely "NUMERIC". If set, then it does not attempt to
resolve the PCI vendor and device ID to human-readable
numbers but rather prints their hex values.
- 12.2: Dynamic PCI initialization through external segments
was augmented. Init functions receive now one additional
argument in a1, and may return a (non-NULL) pointer.
Initially, Init functions are called with this argument
set to NULL, and receive in register a0 a pointer to a
RDArgs structure for command line parsing. If they return
a non-NULL pointer and not a small number as error code,
they are called *once again* the PCI environment is
completely setup. They then receive NULL as RDArgs in a0,
but its own (previous) return code in a1 to complete
a potential initialization of a device.
Update: (02.01.2025, 21:00, cg)
Version 12.7 has been released in the meantime. (cg)

Virtual Desktops for Workbench: GoVD 2.0
Krzysztof Donat's program GoVD makes it possible to use the Workbench on up to eight virtual screens on AmigaOS 3.1.4 and 3.2. It is possible to specify which Workbench windows and programs should use which one of the screens.
With version 2.0 released today, the program functions as a commodity. Other new features include keyboard shortcuts for switching desktops and pixel-precise positioning of the window with the virtual desktop buttons.
The most important features and improvements are:
- Added the ability to define keyboard shortcuts for switching between
virtual desktops, switching to the next and previous desktop,
and hiding the window with virtual desktop buttons
- Added the ability to precisely (pixel-perfect) position the window
with virtual desktop buttons on the Workbench screen.
- Added an option to start GoVD in hidden mode.
- Added support for the screennotify library, allowing changes
to the Workbench screen resolution without shutting down GoVD
(optionally, works if the screennotify.library is present in the system)
- From this version, GoVD functions as a commodity,
enabling management through the system's Exchange tool.
- Changed the demo version functionality - now the program operates
without any limitations but only for 20 minutes.
- Restart GoVD from the configuration tool.

Development tools: vasm 2.0a and vlink 0.18
Frank Wille has updated vasm, a portable Assembler for several CPUs with various Syntax and Output modules, as well as vlink, a portable Linker for lots of Object, Executable and Binary formats.
Changes in vasm V2.0a:
- Fixed bad path in source level debugging information, when the initial source file and an include file were based on the same "compile directory".
- Get rid of C99-round() dependency.
- Fixed empty strings, which were broken in V2.0. They should not generate any data.
- When position-independant code is requested (-pic option) the assembler defaults to relocatable mode (to be able to detect violations).
- Allow 64-bit (or more) expressions with absolute label addresses.
- 6502: Additionally allow BRK with an immediate 8-bit operand.
- 6502: Operand prefix character '?' can be used to select the Memory/Bank-ID where the referenced symbol resides. Requires the use of VOBJ and vlink.
- mot-syntax: A double colon after the label also exports RS symbols now.
- madmac-syntax: New directives: ifdef and ifndef (just for convenience, they are no official MadMac directives!).
- madmac-syntax: Fix problem with print-directive when string is empty.
- oldstyle-syntax: Fixed usage of '$' as current-PC symbol for Z80, which was broken since V2.0.
- oldstyle-syntax: Fixed definition of structure offset labels, which should be referenceable by structname.offsetname. Broken since V2.0.
- hunk-output: Fixed output generated by Databss directives (like DX in mot-syntax). Broken in V2.0.
- hunk-output: -linedebug: do not generate multiple entries per line.
Changes in vlink 0.18:
- Define for each relocation type whether it is signed, unsigned or unknown, to provide better range checks.
- Make the range-checking work with sign-extended addresses (Example: m68k 16-bit absolute addressing).
- When an output section's memory region has not enough space the linker will look for the next matching output section.
- Linker script function KEEP() now really prevents garbage collection of sections.
- Sorting and exclusion functions for linker script section patterns: SORT_BY_ALIGNMENT(), SORT_BY_NAME(), SORT_BY_SIZE(), REVERSE(), EXCLUDE_FILE(), EXCLUDE_SECTION(). Supporting up to two sorting levels.
- The output section's bank size can be defined by (BANKSIZE=n) in the script, so input sections may not cross bank borders. In that case they will be aligned to the beginning of the next bank.
- Linker script MEMORY definitions now support an optional ID=n argument, where n defines an identification value which can be referenced by a VOBJ-specific relocation type (MEMID).
- Can find first executable code-section now, when no start symbol is present.
- Portable pattern matching routine, used for Windows and TOS, did case-insensitive string comparisons in the past.
- Absolute symbols are printed as a separate section into the map file.
- Support LINKONCE section flag.
- New options -symfile, -symfmt and -symctrl to output symbol/value pairs into a file using the given printf-format string.
- New options -obe and -ole to specify the endianess of octets within a target-byte (when it has more than 8 bits) when writing the contents of a section to a file system.
- New option -lineoffsets to output a separate file with source line offsets per section.
- New option -mattr to merge all sections with same attributes, when linking without a linker script.
- The target file formats rawbin1 and rawbin2 were replaced by a common rawbin format. rawbin2 is now -brawbin with -multifile option. The old target names are still supported for backwards compatibility.
- New target file formats "foenixpgx-c02", "foenixpgx-816", "foenixpgz-24" and "foenixpgz-32" for Foenix retro computers.
- New target file format "appleomf" can generate relocatable load-files for Apple IIgs computers.
- Merge options -mrel, -mtype and -mall also work with -r now, when creating a new relocatable object file.
- Linker script commands BYTE, SHORT, LONG, QUAD, SQUAD do now create 1, 2, 4 or 8 target-bytes and no longer 8, 16, 32, 64-bit values.
- Relocatable/Abs symbols with the same name have precedence before Common symbols and do not cause a multiple-definition error.
- Starting vlink without arguments only shows a short list of options now. For a detailed description use -h, which also includes target-specific options selected by -b.
- Fixed output section trimming in the linker script.
- Fix error message for unknown target file formats (-b).
- (ados/ehf) New option -kick1 makes sure the generated executable is comaptible with the Kickstart 1.x loader.
- (ados/ehf) Allow symbol redefinitions from pulled library units, as long as their target CPU differs (M68k/PPC WarpOS mixed binaries). This only worked for symbols from code sections, since V0.17.
- (elf) Fixed uninitialized .plt at end of text segment.
- (tos) Can use DRI object files and libraries as input now. HiSoft and SozobonX symbol name extensions are supported.
- (tos) TOS executable files do work as input and DRI objects as output (-r).
- (tos) Enable SozobonX symbol names with -tos-sozobonx.
- (tos) Disable the HiSoft symbol name extension in executables with -tos-stddri.
- (rawbin) Fixed missing byte in the ORIC tape header and automatically remove a ".tap" extension from the name stored there.
- (rawbin) IHEX supports architectures with more than 8 bits per byte. But note that the address is still incremented in 8-bit steps.
- (rawbin) Make sure the file size is even, when using a QDOS header.
- (rawbin) Fixed raw reloc table output (-q) for a relocation at offset 0.
- (rawbin) New options -fill, -coalesced and -multifile (previously rawbin2).
- (vobj) Supports -r option to output a relocatable VOBJ file. Option -vobj2 may be used to write that file in VOBJ v2 format.
- (vobj) -vobjcpu option selects the name of the target CPU.
- (vobj) Supports VOBJ v2 format (vasm -Fvobj -vobj2) and PPC non-standard relocations (EABI, MorphOS, AmigaOS).
- (xfile) Entry address is written to the header.
- (xfile) New option -x-high sets the high-address flag in the header.

amiga-news.de wishes you a happy new year
The amiga-news.de team hopes that our readers survived New Year's Eve well and wishes everyone a Happy New Year. For the Amiga, the past 12 months were - again - quite pleasing and we are confident that there will be a lot to report, discuss and try out again in 2025.
2024 was also a good year for amiga-news.de: we published 1400 news items, the editorial team also received an experienced addition with Nico Barbat and the technology department was significantly strengthened with Markus Bonet. Our news service, which is starting its 27th "financial year" today, should therefore also have a few good years ahead of it. The first goal is, of course, to produce a similar number of articles again, but we will also be working more intensively on the underlying technology.
If you would like to support our work, you are welcome to make a small donation via the PayPal button on our start page. The (small) proceeds will be used to cover our costs for a server and our three domains. (cg)

IFF file browser: IFF Master for Linux
"IFF Master" displays the structures of IFF files. In the first published version, there is a detailed representation of the chunk contents only for ILBM, 8SVX and ANIM. It is a partial reimplementation of IFF Master by Kay Drangmeister. Developer Matthias rustler provides the source code of the new development for separate download.
The programme was written in the Go programming language and uses the Fyne GUI toolkit. For technical reasons, only a Linux version has been released so far. This can be downloaded via the title link under "Releases". Versions for Windows, Darwin and WebAssembly are planned. The latter would run in web browsers.

amiga-news.de: A half-year review
Every website lives from the interest of its users. We therefore wanted to know which news trigger particular interest and what the general situation is regarding visits to one of the best-known German-language sites about the Amiga. In the following, our server administrator Markus Bonet looks back on the past six months and explains his approach to the analysis.
There are countless tools and frameworks for professionally analyzing the use of a website. With a proper database to evaluate the data historically if necessary. This allows one to build great dashboards and put all kinds of information that a typical web server reveals into perspective. As we didn't want to take a sledgehammer to crack a nut here, we opted for a simplified approach. The following requirements were decisive:
- How often are specific news items retrieved?
- Are they retrieved by real users or by one of the many bots?
- What does a ranking of the news items look like in a continuous 14-day time frame?
- What are the most clicked news items in a year and how often were they accessed?
- There doesn't have to be a special way of analyzing the data retrospectively. A simple overview is sufficient for orientation.
In order to determine this by simple means, we have modified the configuration of the Apache web server slightly so that calls to the start page and specific messages are saved separately in a special log file. A distinction is made in advance as to whether the call is made by a known bot. Of course, the source addresses also play a role, as not every automated call is carried out fairly with a correct user agent. This enabled us to integrate a tool that is useful for us, which continuously records the "top news" on the page and reports the hits.
Of course, there is a methodological limitation in that the main page can be configured by the reader, but we can only evaluate the clicked news items. However, we believe that only a minority still use the original look of the main page with complete news items, while most readers are likely to view the titles only according to the current default setting, and that the ranking of the news items is nevertheless representative, even if the absolute figures would be higher.
For yesterday (29.12.2024), for example, the statistics looked like this (always referring to the corresponding German news-items):

( 12.3 days old) AmigaKit: Apparently modified A1200 mainboard planned HotHotHot!
Increasing from top to bottom, you can see the articles that have been clicked on most frequently in the last 14 days. The label "HotHotHot!" marks those messages that had a particularly high number of clicks on a single day - as of yesterday, the front-runner was the one about the A1200GS from AmigaKit, the planned counterpart to the Organge Pi-based Amiga replacement A600GS, in which the AmiBerry emulator ensures the compatibility of the ARM-based mini-computer.
After a few days, interest wanes noticeably, so that a longer time window than the 14 days mentioned is not relevant for us. The example of the aforementioned news item shows that half of all hits occurred in the first two days:
Dec. 18 29 %
Dec. 19 23 %
Dec. 20 11 %
Dec. 21 12 %
Dec. 22 8 %
Dec. 23 7 %
Dec. 24 3 %
Dec. 25 2 %
Dec. 26 1 %
Dec. 27 1 %
Dec. 28 1 %
Dec. 29 1 %
Total: 100 %
We can call up the evaluation live at any time, but snapshots of the evaluation are also created daily. From 18 to 19 December, for example, we were able to clearly see that the aforementioned news item triggered particular interest.
What else have we learned about visits to our website?
By far the most visits are made by bots. The following figures were obtained based on visits over the last 14 days (main page and news pages only, no comments/forum etc.):
85.18 % bots
14.82 % users
28.71 % of users accessed the homepage
2.18 % of users used an Amiga browser
The proportion of calls that we identify as users always fluctuates between 10 and 15 percent. It is also interesting to note that the number of hits by Amiga browsers is between 2 and 2.5 percent. The clear leader here is IBrowse on a - real or emulated - 68k processor. This user agent often makes it into the top 20 of those user agents that we assign to users:
- IBrowse/3.8 (Amiga; Amiga0S 3.2; Build 38.8 68K)
- Mozilla/5.8 (Macintosh; PowerPC AmigaOS 4.2; Odyssey Web Browser; rv:1.23 r5) AppleWebKit/538.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) OWB/1.23 r5 Safari/538.1
- Mozilla/5.8 (Macintosh; PowerPC MorphOS 3.18; Odyssey Web Browser; rv:1.26) AppleWebKit/538.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) OWB/1.26 Safari/538.18
- IBrowse/3.8 (Amiga; AmigaOS 3.9; Build 38.8 68K)
- OWB/3.32 (Amiga0S 4.1)
Of course, this can only serve as a rough guide. We know that detection via user agents is not always reliable. Incidentally, conspicuous IP addresses that do not originate from the providers' CGNAT pools also trigger detection as bot calls. We are currently concerned about the frequent calls by the user agent "NextCloud-News/1.0". Since we see actual users behind it, we leave its calls with the users, even if it is pushing their numbers strongly. Perhaps the NextCloud users would like to reveal themselves in the comments. ;-)
By the way, amiga-news.de is not only frequently visited in German-speaking countries. The English news items do reach an average of 25 to 40 percent of the volume of their German counterparts.
Since we only implemented our analysis in the course of the year, let's take at last a look at the figures for the second half of 2024: Which news items were our top performers that attracted particular attention? The figure in brackets indicates the overall ranking.

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.44
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.99, which allows the development of games from various genres (e.g. Agonman). RedPill (YouTube video) is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial.
Detailed changes of version 0.9.44:
- Wav files can now easily imported, just load them and they will be converted
using Wav28svx.
- When slicing sprites, more options are given to adapt the images to the
current palette.
- In Game setup screen, Camera follow now hows the object name it is following.
- In Level Propertines now we can specify if a background image is a Cover. In
this case the game will show the image with its number of colors and palette,
independently of the game number of colors setup.
- Small change in audio handling.
- Print Text and Print Var triggers have been renamed to Stamp Text and Stamp
Text.
- Added Print Text and Print var triggers that print text using a font sheet.
This type of text is attached to the object and can be moved around.
- Fixes in profiler.
- Higher fetch modes can now be selected even if the game is ECS. If the
machine where the game is running is AGA they will be used.
- Added Color Pulse trigger to allow a color 'pulse' from black to the color it
has in the palette.
- In spritesheet screen if the filename is not found now text is displayed in
red.
- Fix when creating objects, could bring issues when using many of them.
- More checks when handling objects to avoid weird issues.
- Excel font added, now it is the editor font.
- Fix for particles when using games with scroll.
- Small optimization in object processing.
- Ex_particles has been updated following the released game Cosmic Blaster (video).

Picture collection: Update of the Amiga Graphics Archive
The "Amiga Graphics Archive" is dedicated to all kinds of pixel graphics created with the Commodore Amiga between 1985 and 1995. According to the operator, quite a number of remarkable images were created during this period, which he believes should not be gathering dust on some hard drive, hidden in an extra level in a game that is never played, or on a PD collection disk that is almost unknown. These graphics should be accessible to all by presenting them on his website.
Somewhat deviating from its own credo and following on from a first set of images published in October 2023 (amiga-news.de reported), this year's works by Danish graphic designer Facet have now been added. (dr)

Team 17: Martyn Brown deceased
According to various forums, probably all based on a message on X, Martyn Brown, co-founder of game developer Team 17, has died at the age of 57.
British computer graphics veteran Shaun McClure reported on Facebook that Brown had been very ill for a long time following a series of strokes. The last time he spoke to him would have been via a voice emulator. (snx)

MorphOS: 10th alpha version of PanelApp
For one and a half years, Stefan 'Kronos' Kleinheinrich has been working on his resumed project to revise the operating system's panels, which have remained virtually unchanged since MorphOS 1.4.
Public testing of the alpha versions is accompanied in the corresponding MorphZone thread. With its now published number 10, the point has been reached where Ambient itself needs to be revised, which is why future tests will no longer be possible with a generally available version of the MorphOS workbench.

SSL library: wolfSSL for the Amiga
wolfSSL is an open source C library that is primarily intended to provide devices and applications in the embedded sector with an SSL solution. One of the developers involved has now adapted the library to the Amiga: He describes the implementation in a detailed blog, the source code is available on Github.
The author himself would like to try to implement the wolfSSL-based Secure Shell wolfSSH for the Amiga next. It is also possible - although not necessarily planned by him - to use it as a replacement for AmiSSL, to port other tools from the wolfSSL suite or to adapt it to one of the ARM cores in a ZZ9000 graphics card in order to relieve the 68k processor of the complex SSL calculations.

Operating system for the Amiga: Third alpha version of "Serena OS"
At the end of 2022, we reported on the start of Dietmar Planitzer's project to write "Apollo", an experimental operating system for the Amiga 3000/4000. The developer has since renamed his project "Serena OS" (amiga-news.de reported) and released a third alpha version, which is available as a fully compiled ROM. Basically, all Amigas with a 68030 (or faster) processor are supported. The developer writes about the new version:
"The biggest change in this release is the introduction of the disk subsystem and significant improvements to the driver architecture. Booting off and working with double-density floppy disks is now supported.
The diskimage tool has also seen significant improvements: it now allows you to format an Amiga disk image (adf) with SerenaFS, list existing files, push files to a disk image, pull a file off a disk image, create directories, delete files, get and overwrite individual disk blocks and generate a diff of the disk blocks of two disk image files.
Thus you can now use the diskimage tool to create, list and manipulate SerenaFS formatted Amiga disk images on your host system.
Another significant enhancement is that Serena OS now supports a device filesystem (devfs). This filesystem is mounted at /System/Devices and lists all active drivers. An application may open a driver and use the read/write system calls to interact with it. Note however, that disk drivers are the only drivers in this release that actually support read/write operations from user space.
Serena OS implements a disk cache that caches data read from a (floppy) disk. Note that right now all writes are implemented as synchronous writes. The data is cached but the application is still forced to wait until the data has been written to disk. A future version will change this behavior such that an application will not have to wait for a write to finish.
Here is a more detailed list of changes since the previous release:
- more complete C library. Ie added qsort(), itoa() family of functions, etc
- many bug fixes across libc and the kernel
- a number of kernel optimizations
- significantly improved the reliability and performance of in-kernel dispatch queues
- worked out more details of the kernel driver architecture
- added support for disk drivers to the kernel
- added a disk cache to the kernel
- added a device filesystem to the kernel
- FileManager and FileHierarchy are now the kernel components that handle file operations and path resolution
- complete rework of the diskimage tool
- added support for building libtool, makerom and keymap on POSIX (Linux, macOS) systems

Crossfire II: Soundtrack released on Spotify/Apple Music
Just over 20 years after the release of the Amiga game Crossfire II, the soundtrack has now been released on Spotify and Apple Music. It contains both the in-game music by Timo Kloss and the background music for the video sequences by Markus Holler.
The music by Timo Kloss was composed on an Amiga 4000T with the Camouflage program and recorded via MIDI with external audio hardware. Unfortunately, only the 8-bit mono recordings still exist, so it sounds exactly the same now as it did in the game.
Markus Holler's music was composed on an Atari ST with Cubase and played back via MIDI. In the end, however, the audio was recorded again with an Amiga. Recordings in CD quality still exist here, which were used for the soundtrack that has now been released. Timo Kloss was not involved in the production of Markus Holler's tracks, the Spotify/Apple interface unfortunately implies otherwise.
Timo Kloss would like to thank the developers of the game (Thomas and Stefan Schulze from Dreamworlds) for the permission to officially publish the soundtrack. Incidentally, the game was also ported to Windows a few years ago and is available on Steam now.

Assembler: ASM-Pro 1.21 released
ASM-Pro is a MC680x0 macro assembler for the Amiga with an integrated editor, debugger, linker and monitor. The program offers full MC680x0, FPU and MMU support. About a year after the last update, ASM-Pro has now been brought up to version 1.21. The changes:
ADDITIONS
- ASM: Optional multi-line scroll (8 lines instead of only 1) to speed up assembly when output is verbose (e.g. large number of included files or print directives). Check Multiscroll in the assembler preferences.
- ASM: New integer operator: modulo // (e.g. 123//20 returns 3).
BUGFIXES
- ASM: REM/EREM block was not allowed in BSS sections.
- CMDLN: RB (read binary) causes a crash if begin address is unparsable.
- UI: Bevel box is slightly off for the top parameter groups in the environment preferences.
- CMDLN: @-prefixed dump commands incorrectly check for odd address and cpu version, causing a crash on 68000/010 systems.
- ASM: Directives and instructions in the first line of a REPT 0 block starting with either @ or A cause internal error.
- ASM: Incorrectly parsed number of bitplanes while including an IFF colormap causes memory list corruption.
- ASM: Whitespace lines in a macro could cause the Unexpected end of file error and consequent editor freeze.

Amiga show: "Amiga 40" on October 18 and 19, 2025
As announced by the organizers at a1k.org (registration required, German), the next edition of “Amiga xx” will take place on 18 and 19 October 2025 at Kunstwerk - das rote Krokodil in Mönchengladbach-Wickrath, admission is from 10 a.m. each day. Some details about the event have already been communicated by the organizers:
- 2 levels: below the exhibitors, above the stage plus some additional tables - whereby the upper area is open and not a separate room
- Almost 120 tables are available
- Catering will be provided by the Kunstwerk, on-site payment for food and drinks will only be possible by card and not in cash. In exceptional cases, however, we will help at our cash desk in the entrance area
- Maximum number of visitors per day limited to just under 1000 people (for Amiga37 and Amiga38 there was a maximum of 850 people)
- Free parking spaces
- Shopping facilities in the vicinity
Ticket sales are scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2025, as usual via the show's own ticket store. There will again be individual tickets for Saturday and Sunday, as well as discounted tickets for both days. In addition, around 20 user tables will again be offered for all those who want to present their Amigas and more non-commercially and contribute to the diversity of the event. There will also be some after-show tickets or all-in tickets and free tickets for all guests up to the age of 16. Exact prices are not yet known.
Registrations for commercial exhibitors will be possible from the end of the year - if you are interested, please send a message to info@amigaevent.de. A table for commercial exhibitors for both days will cost between 75,- Euro and 80,- Euro plus VAT.
Similar to the Amiga 38, a "Community Award" and an "Aftershow Party" - i.e. an evening event - are also planned, but there is no information on this yet.
The main sponsor will once again be A-Eon (Trevor Dickinson). It is hoped that further supporters from the commercial sector can be announced shortly. In addition, support is once again being sought in all areas: From sponsorship to support with planning and realization to on-site staffers - technicians for a "repair corner" are also being sought. Potential supporters are also asked to contact info@amigaevent.de. (cg)

Trevor's Blog: Another one bites the Dust!
Trevor Dickinson from A-EON Technology published a new article in his "Trevor's Blog" yesterday. In it he gives an outlook on the numerous Amiga events already announced for the coming year, but also looks back on this year's Amiga meetings.
He also announces a new batch of "A1222 Plus" boards. He wrote: "In other good news, with the A1222 Plus selling relatively well, A-EON and AAA Technology have commissioned another batch of motherboards. The deposit has been paid, and production is underway, with delivery expected in the early New Year." (dr)

German print magazine: ASM (Aktueller Software Markt), issue 12/24
Press release: After the great success of the german ASM revival issue 3/23, the editorial team is now upping the ante: this year's issue of german ASM ("Aktueller Software Markt"), number 12/24, has now been published and can now be ordered from amigashop.org. The current magazine offers a comprehensive overview of the new retro releases from summer 2023 to autumn 2024, taking into account the classic computer systems from A for Amiga to Z for ZX Spectrum, in over 40 tests for a total of 12 different computer systems.
What else is there in the new edition of ASM?
- Manfred Kleimann didn't miss the opportunity to write the foreword again - he also fought the Great London Fire of 1666 again, while Martina Strack helped the lemmings again after 30 years and Klaus 'Cruiser' set sail on the Paradroid deck cleaned up.
- Big thanks also go to Torsten Oppermann, who met with Chris Hülsbeck and Julian Eggebrecht for ASM to talk about old and new times and let us share in them.
- Clem Chambers, head of the famous software company CRL, talks about what it was like to run a software company in the 80s and what he did afterwards.
- Michael Kafke tells us pretty much everything about the ASM adventure, Stefan Vogt chats about the details and introduces us to Hibernated 2 (while we take a closer look at his masterpiece "The Ghosts of Blackwood Manor").
- The reader survey from the last issue will be resolved, there will be a programming competition (again...) and one or two surprises.
- And of course all the sections from the last issue are back on board, as is Donald Bug, who is letting go of all his clothes this time...

Universal PCI driver system: OpenPCI 11.2
Thomas 'Thor' Richter's universal PCI driver system "OpenPCI" supports without recourse to the software of the respective manufacturer
all known PCI solutions for the Amiga. The current version includes the following changes:
- GetBoardAttrs() and SetBoardAttrs() could loop forever
on unknown tags, the end marker for the known tags was
incorrect.
- The PCI BAR register parser did not compute the parity
correctly for some boards.
- Two new tags were added for GetBoardAttr(), namely
PRM_PCIMemWindowLow and PRM_PCIMemWindowHigh, which
provide the PCI address range available for a device
at config time, or the PCI address range a device is
mapped into later. These are PCI addresses, not 68K
addresses.
- SetBoardAttr() can now write PRM_MemorySizeX and
PRM_MemoryFlagsX at config time to dynamically size
PCI devices. This is useful for tools called from
within the PCI-Configuration file.
- Fixed a missing register initialization when unloading
tools from LIBS:PCI.
- Added example source code for an init tool for sizing
PCI devices dynamically.
- Fixed the description of the autoconf vendor IDs in the
autodoc file.

AmigaKit: Apparently modified A1200 mainboard planned
At the title link, AmigaKit shows photos of selected areas of a mainboard that is very similar to that of the Amiga 1200, but shows changes in detail:
- USB ports where the external floppy disk drive used to be connected
- moved connectors for the internal floppy disk drive and its power supply, possibly to make room for a new external floppy disk drive connector
- Connections for the hard disk and fan power supply where the parallel port used to be located
- Changes to the keyboard connector area, possibly to replace the original keyboard controller
- CompactFlash connector instead of the PCMCIA connector

Case study: Using the Scorpion engine for porting Ghosts 'n Goblins to the Amiga
A noteworthy case study shows how Ghosts ‘n Goblins can be ported to the Amiga using the Scorpion engine. Developer Skyzoo73 presents a playable demo of the first level with AGA graphics in 64+16 colours. He was supported by IM76 (music conversion, from 6 to 4 channels) and Griffon (additional help). The port contains many classic elements of the original arcade game, including zombies, platforms, magical transformations and hidden bonuses.
The demo already includes game-mechanical details such as checkpoints, a countdown timer and various death animations. Despite some missing or faulty enemy animations, the progress is remarkable. The port impressively demonstrates the potential of the Scorpion engine for the development of new Amiga games. (nba)

Game: Update for Star Dust Wars - Director's Cut
The Electric Black Sheep team has submitted an update for the game "Star Dust Wars - Director's Cut" (amiga-news.de reported).
The T-Fighters' collisions with obstacles were corrected and a bug in the menu was fixed. The keys F1 to F10 and 0 to 9 can now also be used to control the volume of the music and sound effects. In addition, a simplified "engine" with fewer calculations has been integrated to improve performance on Amigas with slower CPUs.
Star Dust Wars - Director's Cut ideally requires an Amiga 1200 with a hard disc, accelerator card and Fast RAM, and can be downloaded in return for a voluntary donation. (nba)

A festive arcade game: Santatron 2024
John Girvin recently attracted attention with the AmiGameJam winner ‘Rogue Declan’. Now he is adding something sweet to the festive season: he is publishing the cute Amiga game "Santatron 2024", which is also part of the coverdisk of the latest "Amiga Addict" magazine.
In this festive arcade shooter, the player takes on the role of Santatron, who must save Christmas from the commercial terror. Santatron shoots his way through his Christmas cave, taking out toys and gingerbread men taken over by the AI, freeing his loyal Christmas elves and collecting power-ups and presents. With varied level design, an atmospheric soundtrack and a pretty 2D retro charm, Santatron 2024 brings nostalgic Christmas spirit to the Amiga.
The game runs on classic Amiga systems (OCS) with at least Kickstart 1.3, 512 MB Chip RAM and 512 MB other RAM, and can also be played on more modern systems with AGA, even in emulation.
Santatron 2024 is available as a free download, but voluntary donations are gladly accepted. The executable ADF and a matching disk label are offered for download. (nba)
