DiamondBOX Version 1.10
Nikolaj Kiær Thygesen has created a website for his Amiga painting program 'DiamondBOX' which you can access via the title link. The program is GFX compatible and requires at least AmigaOS 3.0, 8 MB of RAM, 1 MB free harddisk space, an Amiga with CPU 68020+, and of course a bit of creativity.

X-CELLENCE News
1.) Changes in staffing level:
Our team now exists of 10 staffers. Rico Pook took over the web design for us and we would like to cordially welcome him on this occasion.

2.) Domain:
X-CELLENCE at last could take their domain and is reachable under http://www.x-cellence.de, now.

3.) Cooperative team management:
We separated X-CELLENCE into divisions. Each of the divisions is working on their project independent from the other teams. This allows maximum of flexibility which is especially advantageous in the shrinking Amiga market.

4.) Wanted ....
Due to division of X-CELLENCE we are facing a staffing problem. We still are wanting graphicians and programmers. For those we would prefer people out of the Amiga community. Graphicians should be familiar with 2D/3D tools on AMIGA and/or PC. They would work in the divisions "GOLD" and "EAST".
I.e.: "SCR2K" (FunRacer) and "NYN" (3D ActionAdventure Shooter). We are exclusively wanting programmers for the AmigaDE. The Classic market is no longer taken into account by us.

Is there a Future for 'SerialRipper'?
I need 2 get in reach of ppl that want to take over the project I'm working on.. Or WAS is a better word for it now.. The project I'm talking about is a Multi-Module/Sound ripper for Amiga..

The project goes under the name of SerialRipper.. I'm sure of there are ppl that heard of this project.. Well.. Since I have stopped developing it, I was wondering if anyone wanna continue my work on it?.. I have coded it using AmigaE (by Wouter) and Assembler.. I've been using MUIBuilder for creating MUI's for it.. U as the new coder of it, should have knowledge of coding in E and ASM.. So, if u're up to it..Please let me know.. My email are as follows: kaarej@start.no

Alternative: Sony Vaio with Crusoe-CPU
The Sony notebook Vaio Picturebook/C1VE comes out very innovative: it's equipped with a Crusoe CPU and an integrated camera and weighs less than two pounds. Does the notebook worth a price of 4,500DM?

Summary:
This notebook of the Sony C1V line is fast in compared to PDA and quite slow in compared to a 'real' notebook. But the price for it is placed in the notebook range where 4,500DM are not any longer a dram, meantime.

Amiga2001 - 1. April - Tip
Press release: Some of you have commented on our Amiga2001 show falling on April 1st. If you are not familiar, April 1st in the U.S. is called April Fools Day. A day when some pull pranks. To answer your concerns about the last day of the show being held on April 1st, all I can say is...

"The joke's on our competitors. They're going to feel like it's 1985 all over again!"

Anyone familiar with the original release of the Amiga should know how this statement applies.

See you in St. Louis in just over a week. Remember, the Banquet is going to be something special. We only have a few tickets left, so get your orders in now.

Amiga2001
As formerly reported several times, the Gateway Computer Show 'Amiga2001' will take place in St. Louis from 03-30-2001 to 04-01-2001. Petro Tyschtschenko will attend a celebration on the occasion of his retirement at the show .

The original message:

»Petro Tyschtschenko is hosting a celebration at the Amiga2001 show. That's right, Petro has been kind enough to provide funding for a little celebration of his retirements. Check out the web pages for this special announcement.

Don't forget, we have a ROAST of Petro lined up for the Banquet. The deadline for advance ticket purchase and the Banquet have been extended to Monday March 26. Banquet tickets are only available in advance this year. So get you check in pronto. Tickets are selling very well.

The Amiga2001 web pages have been updated several times since my last email. If you haven't checked them for venors and prizes lately, you should look again. We'll have more next week too. So check often.

Several companies have been kind enough to donate prizes for our show. Also, the hall is filling up quite nicely, so check and see if you've missed any of the vendors.«

Which one looks best? Amiga-Boing-Ball or Check-Marks?
Dirk Hase takes interest in the opinion of Amiga-Users. "I have already heard many said that they prefer the Check-Marks over the Boing-Ball. One criterion is the recognition value of the logos. The Check-Marks overrules the Boing-Ball at this in my experience. Has the time come to start a poll about his? Or maybe a graphics contest about this subject? I think that Amiga Inc. should also be informed about this since we can count on a new product, soon."

We can fulfill Dirk's wish about the poll. You can participate by following the title link.

Version 2 of the Universal Filter for PageStream
The 'universal' filter allows loading of many additional graphic formats within the PageStream v3.x/v4.x DTP program. Furthermore the loading of already supported graphic formats was considerably accelerated in parts.

Version 2 of the filter is finally released for free on http://www.uni.coloraid.de. Similar to ICS the filter is now using the IRW library for image loading.

The innovations in version 2 are:
  • Now supports <8Bit and CMYK modes in PageStream
  • Faster
  • Almost no memory usage when no image is loaded
  • Loading of 16 bit (converted to 8 bit) and CMYK data is now possible
  • Improved PGM/PBM/PPM/JPEG/BMP/TIFF routines
  • Considerably improved error handling thanks to IRW
  • Locale support
  • Compiled for different cpus
  • MANY small improvements

The supported formats for now are:

BMP, DataTypes, DCX, IFF ILBM, JPEG, PCX, GIF, PGM/PBM/PPM, PNG, Targa, TIFF

Heise: Slashdot have to Delete Article about Scientology
On last Friday the news and discussion forum Slashdot announced a premiere the operators might rather not wanted to experience: for the first time the internet service - founded in 1997 they have become one of the most important speaking tubes for the open source scene - had to remove an already published article.

In a message regarding the incident Rob Malda, founder of Slashdot and on the net also known as CmdrTaco, stated that on Saturday last week an anonymous reader had contributed an article containing a text Scientology keeps copyright for. Scientology lay claim on being a church which the US revenue authorities admited.

Espial Escape - Slim Webbrowser for AmigaDE
"Escape is a HTML4.01 webbrowser which just happens to work on AmigaDE thanks to its Java support. Escape is not only small, but fast and loaded with features including HTML4.01, DHTML and more."

On amiga.org you can read about it:

I noticed that the easiest way to install Espials Escape on the AmigaSDK was to simply unzip the *.jar files to the root. Sadly there was no archive on Espials homepage that made it easy for me to get them. So I mailed them about the problem. Now they have added an archive of Escape with the Jar files on their homepage.

Payback Update
The first update for Payback is available. Several reported bugs were fixed and a screen scaling feature was added for slower processors. Also, new graphics were integrated.

There's also an update of the demo version, which raises the time limit of three to five minutes.

On the Payback website, an FAQ about Payback was opened which answers frequently asked questions. The game can be ordered directly in the online store.

In an interview with the Amiga-Future, programmer James Daniels describes Payback as follows: "The player assumes the role of a young, fleeing driver and attempts to become a big gangster boss. The game is entirely non-linear. To complete a level, the player has to collect a certain amount of points. How he achieves that is entirely up to him. You can follow the advice of the local Kingpin, uncover secret missions, or get into a fight."

Amster

Amster News
Amster is a program for downloading of authorized MP3 music files from Napster. One also can let the program (client) search for music files made available by other participants or can chat with other participants.

Yesterday the Amster source code was put on SourceForge. Interested developers can participate in further development under 'CVS access' (explanation in addition).

Since it wasn't clear to me what CVS access means I asked about this on our internal mailing list. Ruediger Hanke took the task to give an extended explanation. Because I can imagine our readers to be interested in this, too, I post his answer here:

What is CVS access?

CVS = Concurrent Versions System, a program for source code management. Among other things the program saves old versions of the source code, so one can trace changes from one version to another. Furthermore it coordinates changes in source codes if several developers are working on one single program. Else there would happen situations like follows:
  • developer A loads source ab.c
  • developer B loads source ab.c
  • developer A saves source code ab.c including changes done by him
  • developer B saves source code ab.c including changes done by him and by doing so overwrites the changes of developer A.

CVS cares for changes not to be accidently overwritten by somebody and in the case of need announces conflicts caused by changes. Thus it is essential if several developers are working on one single program.

Amster seems to be under CVS control. "CVS access" in this case means that people wanting to participate in programming Amster can get access to the CVS server managing the program's source codes.

Amiga Arena News
Preface
Since I cannot affect as much as I would like to on my own I decided to take a chance for a partnership with the Fun Time World! The Amiga Arena homepage will remain what it is, now, and I hope to be able to act even more effective in this partnership than before !
Olaf Koebnik - Amiga Arena

Amiga Arena - Fun Time World Partnership
The shareware market suffered from evaluations of the past years. The amount of new releases decreased very much every year. To stop this evaluation the pages Fun Time World and Amiga Arena agree to a partnership to patronize the shareware market. This partnership's objective is to call user's attention to developments at the shareware market.

This is to serve the purpose of higher sales and to motivate developers to continue to develop new and better programs, at the same time. In the future by a closer cooperation with the developers user's wishes shall be taken into account more than this has been done before. In further steps registration of programs from foreign countries shall be facilitated.

It will be determined from surveys which kind of software is in demand most. Special wishes from now on can be sent to the Fun Time World and to the Amiga Arena. Programmers who would agree to offer their programs at a more cost-effective price for a certain period of time, can contact the Amiga Arena at any time.

Amiga Arena
The Amiga Arena is a shareware / freeware support site with special prices for shareware software, links, interviews, and full versions of shareware software which will not be further developed.

Fun Time World
The Fun Time World page provides the Amiga users with topical news, test of software and hardware, as well as important information since several years. Meantime the service has been extended by adding an online shop as well as auction and forum sections.

New Version of HTMLread
A new version of HTMLread (v1.1) can be downloaded from the support page.

HTMLread is an extension for YAM. YAM is a wonderful mailer, but not capable of displaying e-mails written in HTML code as like as sent by Netscape, Eudora or Outlook. HTMLread discovers, converts and sends these e-mails to a HTML viewer.

Some changes were made in the new version:
  • HTML parser rewritten (faster, more compatible, , full «base» tag support),
  • Problems with blank characters in the name fixed.
  • New GIF for condition.
  • Better error handling.
  • HTMLreadPrefs rewritten (now with MUI GUI)

AMIGA Inc.: New PDA Projects
As already reported on amiga-news.de, Amiga Inc. is organizing a project for programming software for PDAs. People who want to take part in this project as programmers may announce himself/herself via this page.

Amiga already has contact with companies who like to use the AmigaDE software on their appliances. In this context Gary Peake, director for development and support at Amiga Inc., wrote the following on AMIOPEN mailing list:

We have spent considerable time talking with a company who likes what they see of the Amiga content thus far. They will not be announced until St Louis, but we all know that development needs lead time.

This company has some PDA models coming out real soon now and we have sold them on letting Amiga developers produce their content.

This content will be sold via a web portal and all certification and runnability testing will happen here at Amiga Inc for logistic reasons.

Specs are as follows for two separate units:

Screen Size: 240x320, 65k color3.5" reflective-TFT

Screen Size: 176x220, 65kcolor, 3" reflective-TFT

Both units will be able to handle up to 500k games and applications. Due to CPU speed limitations, code must be tight and efficient as always. This customer prefers VP coding, but won't pass on C, C++, or Java apps.

Examples of content needed:

Hoyle type card games
Chess
Checkers
Armageddon
PokeYman derivatives
No X rated content!

I am sure they would welcome any freeware content, but they are mainly looking for commercial quality content. Details on how the system will work will be released shortly to those who respond to this email.
If you are seriously interested in producing PDA content please send me an email to gary@amiga.com.
You MUST be under NDA AND be a registered Amiga developer before I can release any further information to you so make sure you have a valid NDA on file.

If you have not yet registered and you have a copy of our SDK, please go to www.amigadev.net and register as a developer.

If you do not have a valid NDA with us, simply look at www.amigadev.net under the "legal" menu, grab a copy of the NDA and get it mailed back or faxed back ASAP. Address and fax number is on the NDA.

Only serious need respond as we will be on a tight schedule to meet the first delivery date.

This may be cross posted to Amiga news web sites and other lists.

New Development System for PDA Games for the AmigaDE
Ast, by the makers of KDP, is a new PDA game for AmigaDE. The game uses the gm-Engine to give developers easy access to the basic functions necessary for games developement for PDAs.

The release of Ast and gm is still long in coming. But for the meantime there's a picture of an Ast beta version. This imgae was taken before the final graphics set was added.

Wordworth Developments
Unfortunately development of Wordworth for the AMIGA has ceased several time ago. The last version 7 indeed contains many features, but also lacks of things like for example a JPEG filter. So you have to convert the wanted JPEG graphic for now into IFF or another format Wordworth supports using a separate program. Another thing completely missing is PPC (WOS) support.

I'd like to call programmers among other things working with Wordworth to program the missing things (I'm mainly about the JPEG filter). Provided that I'd have the needed development tools, compilers etc., and a supporting (teaching!) programmer, I'd do it myself.

AKIconzGold Update
5 days after the latest update there's again one due.: On my homepage can be found the third (and probably the last) "homepage only" preview of the AKIconzGold. There are almost 40 new icons. Additionally the ReadMe was extended by an important part regarding the installation in which the setting of the correct color palette is described that is necessary to display the icons as wanted.

The setting of this color palette gives some more advantages: All icons, no matter whether MagicWB (8 colors), RomIcons (16 colors, often to be found with the installers of WHDLoad and jst) or just the AKIconzGold (and also the similar BNSMWBicons) have always the right colors with this setting. And NewIcons, too, manage with this palette, and even GlowIcons do look relatively appealing on a 32 colors screen!
People who don't want to restrict themselves to one "kind" of icons but want to have the correct color settings for almost all icons should set this palette!

Besides, all sites of the homepage were recreated. Although less the design but especially the colors were chosen completely new. This looks, in my opinion, much better (and is much better matching the homepage title ;-)).

NetBSD/Amiga IOblix - Driver Change
The NetBSD/Amiga - IOBlix-Zbus driver was changed in a way that the quartz frequency is changeable via the kernel variable _iobzclock (with binpatch and reboot) or via the kernel option IOBZCLOCK.

Newer IOBlix cards use a 22.1184MHz quartz that allows more standard baud rates, older ones on the other hand use a 24MHz quartz. Owners of a 24MHz quartz need to set _iobzclock or IOBZCLOCK to 24000000.

Besides this, iobl* at zbus? is now included in the GENERIC configuration.

NetBSD-current testers are asked for review reports, also about the parallel interface. Details about the availability of source code etc. can be found at:

PC MP3-Player 'Sonique' Planned for AmigaDE
Sonique is an audio player often used on PCs. According to the current Sonique newsletter it is planned to port version 2 - which is under development at the time being - to as much platforms as possible. The interesting thing in this is the AmigaDE being mentioned, too. Further details can be taken form the Sonique 2 FAQ.

This is from the Sonique newsletter, (sonique as you may
know is a rather good MP3-player on the PC)

SONIQUE NEWSLETTER - VOL 2. ISSUE 4. - MARCH, 2001

INTRODUCTION

As promised, this issue is a special update on the
current state of Sonique 2. Things are progressing
very well and we're wetting ourselves several times
a day from sheer excitement. We have to keep the
entire office covered in plastic. We've got webvan
delivering rubber pants and huggies directly to our
workstations. Yup, Sonique 2 is really that cool.

(stuff about sonique 2 deleted)

SONIQUE 2 PRIMER

You are probably wondering just what this Sonique 2
thing is really all about. How is it different than
Sonique 1? Why should you even care? Well, first
off, let's talk about the number 2. The "2" in
Sonique 2 is really less about Sonique VERSION 2.0
and more about Sonique 2, THE SEQUEL. Sonique 2 is
not just another upgrade of the same old tired software.
No No NO! Sonique 2 is completely different. Sonique 2
has been in development for over 2 years and shares almost
no code with Sonique 1. It is based on entirely new
ultra-swoobtastic(tm) technology.  Audio system,
GUI engine, Skinning system, plugin architecture,
visual system, all sparkling new! Even has that great
"new software" smell.

SONIQUE 2 & MANTIS

Sonique 2 is based on some very nifty technology that
Andrew, Nicholas, and the rest of the Sonique coders
have been developing for the last year called MANTIS.
MANTIS serves two important functions: First, it separates
GUI design from application development, allowing designers
and programmers to work separately on the same app, freeing
designers from the need to program and programmers from the
the need to do GUI design (they hate that). Second, it
provides an extremely powerful environment for creating and
operating real-time GUI interfaces. Animation, effects,
layering, font rendering, menu systems, and just about
everything else are handled by MANTIS, giving the GUI
designer supreme control over the look and feel of their
app. Want to make a fully animated semi-transparent free
floating dockable custom menu with flames shooting out of it?
Want it in 200 languages? MANTIS can do that for you...

OTHER TECHNOLOGY

MANTIS is not the only booty-slappin' body rockin' trick up
our sleeve. There's also the new audio system. It features
24 bit audio (just like professional studio gear), support
for DSP effects chains, can easily handle just about any file
format, and is faster than fast.

The plugin system is flexible and powerful. There are
really no limitations to what you can do. Plugins can take
advantage of MANTIS and integrate seamlessly. We expect a lot
of really interesting plugins to be developed for Sonique 2.

This is going to be amazing...

(stuff about skins removed)

PLATFORM SUPPORT

Sonique 2 is very portable. We designed it to be from the
beginning.

Expect Sonique 2 for Windows 9x, ME, NT4, 2K, XP as well as
Mac OSX,

Linux, BeOS, and AmigaDE

LEGACY SUPPORT

Yes, Sonique 1.x Skins and Visuals will work with Sonique 2..

QUESTIONS

If you have questions about Sonique 2, ask them in the forum
(0000,8000,0000 http://forum.sonique.com).
We will go through the threads in the forum every so often
and move common questions onto the FAQ.

The answers that you seek are often available from other users
or Team Sonique members themselves. We prefer communicating
in the forum to receiving tons of email. We get enough email
as it is.

CONCLUSION

Sonique 2 is something everyone at Team Sonique cares about
deeply. We're sure that you are going to love it. We
certainly do...

BIZ DEV

If you have business related questions about Mantis or Sonique2,
please contact our business development staff at 0000,8000,0000
info@sonique.com or call 415-276-3940.

I hope this is of intrest to you,

Bye M Stormink.

We will not develop our games (SCR2K, FirePower and New York Nights) for the Classic-Amiga. For us this was not easy to decide, but the limited possibilities of the PPC/3D system the AMIGA can offer for the time being don't meet our requirements.

Since we all are AMIGA users from the very beginning, we didn't want to put down our ambitions regarding the AMIGA, thus we came to the conclusion to develop for the AmigaOne. We hope for your understanding.

Kriton Kyrimis has released version 1.13 of the open source Java-compiler 'Jikes' for AmigaOS and AmigaDE (AmigaSDK). The compiler distinguishes by high speed and is therefore a good choice for extensive projects.

The compiler has been developed by Philippe Charles and David Shields for alphaWorks-program from IBM. The current homepage of the compiler is situated on IBM - developerWorks.

You can download the different versions for Amiga under the title link. Besides the compiler you need the Java-run-time-classes e.g. from Sun or the open source Java-implementation Kaffe. www.amigaworld.com is Not Down...
Yesterday I was pointed out that AmigaWorld obviously cannot be accessed. But www.amigaworld.com still works only the `international` DNS-entry is missing - according to DENIC "Record last updated on 26-Feb-2001" -.

You can access the site under http://151.189.12.217. If you want to read the programs support sites you have to do it in the following way, e.g for MUIbase: http://151.189.12.217/support/muibase/ (Do not forget the slash at the end!). Ralph Reuchl

New version of SiteWay-modules: WebColor 1.2
WebColor is a helpful tool for creating and editing HTML-colours. You can choose the colour in 24 Bit mode or it can be reduced to the so called "web-palette". The Workbench palette colours can be used and the VGA- and Netscape-colour names are also supported. WebColor is part of the SiteWay project.

WebColor can now adopt each colour from each window or screen using a pipette (...which turned out to be very useful!).

Interview with Thomas Knäbel, pblan GmbH
Martina Jacobs from amiga-news.de asked the CEO of the bplan GmbH some interesting questions:

Amiga-News: The Pegasos specification basically corresponds to the Zico specification from Amiga, Inc. In your announcement you talked about the hardware, after it was technically enabled, to be utilized for system software verification. Are there plans to also make the Pegasos prototype available to Amiga, Inc. for Amiga product verification?

Thomas Knäbel: In the first step we conceive the BIOs and boot software of the Pegasos hardware for system software . When these are working faultless (i.e. it will then already be possible to start Linux) the hardware will be available for software developers (so for Amiga, too).

Amiga-News: In the comments on your announcement on amiga-news.de Michael Garlich from Titan-Computer was talking about AmigaOS 3.1 - 3.9 will run on the Pegasos hardware, until the software would address the AGA chip-set. Is this true and if so, how broad is this downwards compatibility? Will it be possible to run style guide conformable applications and current available games on the Pegasos hardware under AmigaOS 3.1 to 3.9?

Thomas Knäbel: The current software stage allows to execute the following kinds of applications:
  • All of the AmigaOS 3.1 - 3.9 programs which do NOT directly address the Amiga chip-set. That is to say programs accessing the system via the AmigaOS' API are executable.
  • PowerUp programs (not directly accessing the hardware)
  • WarpUP programs (not directly accessing the hardware)
Amiga-News: Furthermore Mr. Garlich was talking about a PCI-AGA card was in consideration. Of course this makes Amiga users' hearts beat faster. Are you reflecting such thing regarding Pegasos?

Thomas Knäbel: We are taking this into account.

Amiga-News: The Classic-Amiga not only has the AGA chip-set for custom chip. Standard for sound output is the internal sound chip (Paula). Will the Classic-Amiga's sound chip be emulated by the Pegasos system and/or are there other solutions for sound output under AmigaOS via the Pegasos' integrated sound sub-system (e.g. similar to AHI on the Amiga)?

Thomas Knäbel: The Amiga's original audio output is made possible by a respective emulation. Programs utilizing AHI are supported directly.

Amiga-News: Is there something you would like to say to the Amiga users?

Thomas Knäbel: On this occasion we would like to thank all of the Amiga users and software developers who had to manage things without new hardware for a long period of time. We are sure to be able to offer to all of these Amiga enthusiasts a hardware which meets the requirements of a modern computer system.

Amiga-News: Thanks a lot for this interview and much success for the future.

New project: TAWS - The Amiga Workbench Simulation
TAWS is a JavaScript project with the aim to convert the look & feel of our beloved Workbench to a browser.
Many Amiga-related sites use the l&f of the Workbench for navigation, so I had the idea to perfect it.
Feedback is wanted; I am interested in others point of view and if I should go on with the project or not.

Geek Gadgets-Server with new IP
This is an important update concerning the GeekGadgets' servers. Over the next few days the GeekGadgets project will be moving to a new IP address [64.232.230.106]. A temporary disruption in service may occur due to propagation delays in the various Domain Name Servers, but nothing to be alarmed about. If you do experience problems, you can use the IP (64.232.230.106) temporarily until the DNS hosts get caught up.

Programmers for Internet Software Project Wanted
Achim Stegemann wrote:
Programmers wanting to participate in a software project for the Amiga are wanted.

The project's focus is to program a shared library to make developing of Internet programs easier for less experienced programmers.

Many of us know the problem: One would like to load a file from the Internet via FTP or HTTP protocol with his own program, but doesn't know the respective procedure or addressing bsdsocket.library is too complicated cause you don't know the commands needed. In such cases diverse source codes from Aminet or Linux sources offer only limited help.

The library (maybe by the name of ftp.library ?) would do all this work for the programmer. For example it should be easy to access files on FTP servers by "FTP_Directory", "FTP_Open", "FTP_Read", "FTP_Write", and "FTP_Close" (function names are possible examples). Similar should be possible for HTTP or other protocols (e.g. e-mail communication).

The library is meant to become freeware to make it available for any program developer. Anybody conversant with the use of BSD socket commands and Internet protocols wanting to participate in this project is called to contact me via e-mail

asyncio.library for WarpOS Update
There now is an update for the asyncio.library for WarpOS in version v40.4. The update fixes a exception handler hit under WarpOS v5 as far as the handler was activated (thanks to Oliver Roberts).

The update can be downloaded from the download section on the homepage. It was also uploaded to Aminet and should be available there, soon.

BoingWorld

Simon 2001 V2.1
Simon is a small classic computer game where the objective is to repeat an ever growing sequence of lights and sounds. This is a small update and re-compilation of an old routine written by BoingWorld editor: Richard 'DawnBringer' Fhager.

Simon2001: Is a remake of an old classic game where the objective is to repeat an ever growing sequence of lights and sounds. Download it here.

I played a version of this game on the C64 --- and while I could never repeat more than 15-20 steps I had a friend that managed almost 70!!! (I have 100 steps in this game) --- If you can top this or even get close to my friends "record": Please, mail me, and let me know!

This was originally an old game I wrote back in '91. I added a nicer interface in '97. This version (v2.1, Feb 2001) is slightly polished and recompiled.

AROS News
AROS, the open source project to implement a portable AmigaOS is progressing.

Most remarkable innovation is the finished locale preferences program by Georg Steger. There is also a screenshot of this preferences. Additionally there is a demo showing the use of the cool_buttonclass for Georg Steger's coolimages-Library.

The fractal program 'XaoS' (contrib section) needs topaz/8 font, hence it doesn't work correctly any more since AROS now utilizes a proportional font.

Johan Alfredsson has corrected an error in C:SetKeyboard and in the RAM handler. IPrefs now can use notification in ENV:Sys/ to update the settings.

Thanks to Stefan Berger is now is possible to abort packets sent to the filesystem.

mOOdS - music for your instincts
The module platform Moods has started their online module Compo on the 1st of March. This competition is some kind of experiment, all of the participants have to download samples from the homepage and make the best of those few samples. The point of interest in this is - everybody will make different music from these. Until April 1st modules can be sent to the Moods' organizer via e-mail or mail to participate in the Compo.

A few days after closing date the modules will be available for download and voting. Besides of glory, fun, and new friends unfortunately there is nothing else you can win....

Amiga Arena News
Amiga Arena - AmigaKonto full version
By authority of Adreas Regul the program AmigaKonto is ready for free download. AmigaKonto was developed for management of accounts. Especially for bank giro accounts with many movements one quickly forfeits summary in verifying recurrent money transfers. Therefore AmigaKonto first of all serves as a special kind of database for managing the different transfer orders. By various selection and statistic functions then it is possible to address single positions well directed.

Full benefit is to achieve in collecting account data over several years to have comparison values at hand enabling you to get a quick summary by use of the selection functions.

Amiga Arena - Toadies Survey supplement
Participation in the survey to develop a computer rival for Toadies is without engagement. With Toadies belonging to the "most downloads" of Aminet in mind, I'm very disappointed about the results of participation, so far.

Earthquake in Seattle
Last night an earthquake with the strength of 6.8 happened to Northwest USA. Seattle was affected particular; the news are talking about one event of death and several people got hurt.

Best wishes to Snoqualmie (30 miles away from Seattle); I hope everybody at Amiga Inc. rode out this night and that there is no large loss.

Supplement 02 March 2001 On an e-mail from us Gary Peake from Amiga, Inc.replied:
Everything is lovely here. The building shook pretty good for about 30 seconds but no loss of life anywhere in Washington State and not a lot of physical damage except to older buildings in bad need of repair. The news media made it sound much worse than it really was or could have been.
Thanks for asking about us!

New Strategy Game Planned
Alien Imperium is supposed to become a network and Internet game which is supposed to support several operating systems, because it will be programmed in Java. It will be made in co-operation of Amig@lien with AccM Software Allianz.

In this space strategy game you have to be superior in technology and tactics to other races. For instance you can invent a lot, but you can also enter alliances as well as other contracts.

Everybody who liked Imperium Terranum will be fine with this game. This game will be delivered on CD-ROM and will certainly be released for the AmigaOne, but also a classic-Amiga version is planned. We hope you are already excited.

Here is a hint for all who cannot wait for it: We hope to be able to show a graphic and sound presentation to the computer revolution 2001. (Ricco Clemens)

Those ones who want to support the project "Alien Imperium" should mail to AccM or Amig@lien. We are grateful for each help! Manfred Rauer (POI)

Wscons is the console driver interface which does not depend on the machine and which is already in use on many NetBSD-architectures. Confusion about Proceedings Against Met@box
»Currently a report of the stock exchange information service Prior produces some confusion. Referring to this the public prosecution Frankfurt investigates the set-top-box producer Met@box from Hildesheim because of the suspicion of manipulation of the stock exchange. Already at the beginning of the year the business offices of the company has been investigated. At inquiry the public prosecution Frankfurt referred to their colleague in Hildesheim; the supreme public prosecutor Seemann confirmed that a proceedings was carrying out but refused to give further information. Instead of that he referred to the public prosecution Hannover which did not make a comment as well as Prior himself: "The chief is in vacancy", was the answer at inquiry from Heise online.«

New PlayGUI Version and Special Version
From my homepage (Amiga/Projects/PlayGUI) a new version of PlayGUI can be downloaded from today. (Unfortunately still not from the PlayGUI page due to a server problem.)

PlayGUI is a all-around play GUI for mods, midis, Mp3s, and samples with many features which can be embellished with skins and themes.

Changes:
  • Bugfix: slider gadgets are displayed at the right position, now.
  • Bugfix: sample-buffer showed 0 if it were set to maximum.
  • Bugfix: GMPlay filter didn't work - this function has been removed
  • The menus have been switched to upper- /lower case for easier reading
  • Font problem fixed
  • No more 3D frames for the skin

Moreover there is a 7MB special version of PlayGUI on my homepage containing the latest version and additionally all of the skins and themes available at this time. 90% of these are not to find at Aminet.

For those of you who were into the module scene a few years ago, you might remember B.C. (aka Bobby Clark, the guy who filled up Aminet mods/med with heaps of music) ... B.C. now has recorded a debut album, which is purchasable at http://www.mp3.com/2000bc The debut album is titled 2000 B.C. It features mainly electronic and new age based tracks, as well as a couple of re-makes of aminet Octamed classics. NListtree Final! Version 18.7 final
After many beta versions now the new version of NListtree is available under the title link. NListtree is a MUI class basing on NList capable of predictable displaying data in a tree pattern in different ways.

Among other software NListtree is utilized by AmiTradeCenter, NewsCoaster, Charon, RxMUI, Workbench 2000, SimpleMail, etc. This list is continuously growing.

For faultless function the latest version of NList v0.90 (19.98) is needed, which is available under the title link form today, too. NListtree works only constricted or not at all with elder versions of NList.

And now an appeal: I would be happy about information which other programs are using NListtree.
Have fun with it,
Carsten Scholling

bplan GmbH

bplan GmbH: Pegasos First Hardware
bplan announce the first hardware platform to be available.

bplan GmbH announce the first Pegasos prototypes to be available. The fist hardware line is currently in progress at DCE and after technical clearance will be utilized for system software verification purposes.

According to bplan a first official presentation of a working system is to be expected for early May, already. At the same time developer systems for software companies will be available. As for possible operating systems for those machines Linux as well as MorphOS are supported directly.

In those systems the bplan GmbH for the very first time makes a platform available including the virtue of an open system like Linux, as well as direct support for existing Amiga® software. Contrary to alternative basic approaches MorphOS is capable of running existing Amiga® programs in a native PowerPC environment. The synergy effects between both operating systems (Linux/MorphOS) as a result of this let the Pegasos systems be interesting for both, developers and users.

Query about Double-Buffering
These are no true Inutilis news, but it's a cry for help. I'm just about to change the double-buffering system of the game Ermentrud. Unfortunately I'm not that skilled in that, so my question:

and anything along with these? Who ever has coded an intuition-friendly double-buffering, please contact Timo@inutilis.de. If you cannot help even, but know somebody knowing about that, it would be kind, if you would forward this message to such person. I appreciate every reference.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Maybe it's the thought of spring finally coming - about 2 to 4 weeks
away in these parts - that's affected my mind, but I'm feeling rather
optimistic about the Amiga's future. I think the stories below will
explain why better than I can. Amiga Inc. has survived a year or so,
and while they're not as far along as I'd like (I'd like dominance of
the computer industry ...), they're actually doing pretty well by new
startup company standards. This is especially true given all the bad
press the high tech industry has been getting lately.
 Then again, maybe it's just the thought that anything can happen if
Commodore can be revived in the US. See http://www.commodore2000.com
if you're curious. Our understanding (which may be wrong) is this is a
US company which bought the rights to the Commodore name from Tulip in
Denmark.
 There's even a rumor that Jack Tramiel, the original founder of
Commodore, is involved in the revival. We haven't checked that out.
Whatever the case, we're reasonably sure there will be no joining of
the new Amiga and new Commodore down the road ... though there's no
reason why one of the Commodore PCs couldn't be configured to run the
Amiga DE ... hmmmmm.

LINK TO SUPPORT ST. LOUIS SHOW

 Besides answering questions for our readers (see E-mail to the
E-ditor) , Bob Scharp is the force behind the Gateway Amiga shows in
Saint Louis, USA - one of the premier shows of the Amiga year.
 As the February Executive Update below indicates, there may be some
very interesting news available there from Amiga Inc. If you have an
Amiga web page, you can help support the show, and keep it growing.
Clicking on the following link will download an archive containing a

 Hi, just a note to say that as discouraged I am regarding the state
of the Amiga market and (lack of) devleopment, I still look forward to
receiving your Amiga Update news reports. I will continue anxiously
await them, and also to use my (accelerated) A1200 for as long as I
can get spare parts (or spare A1200s!)

Best wishes, and please keep on with your efforts
on behalf of the Amiga!

Rich,
 Sometimes hard to not be discouraged. We do have some interesting
news in this issue that looks to the future in a positive way. I
suspect there may be more after the St. Louis Amiga show in April.
We'll keep you up to date, regardless.
 Thanks for the kind words,
 Brad

 Aren't you overlooking something here. The new DE is supposed to be
portable to almost any OS. Amiga Inc. dismissed porting it to the
classic Amiga because current processors lack the horsepower to host
it. I think a 300Mhz Coldfire would do the trick though. Wouldn't a
68xxx compatable processor running classic Amiga and hosting the new
DE be a more elegant transition solution that having 2 processors ie
68xxx and PPC? Amiga Inc. may want to rethink porting to 68xxx if
someone produces Coldfire accelerators.

Regards, Jeff
~~~~~~
Jeff,
 You're right as far as you go. However, I don't think it's very
likely we'll see the DE ported to older Amigas. For Coldfire to be of
much help to us, we'd need the port and a Coldfire board of some kind.
It could happen, and we'd be happy if it did. We just don't think it
likely.
Hello Brad,
 Was interested to see the query from one of your readers regarding
SBase (SuperBase). I too am an SBase4Pro user, and received the
following reply from Russ Norby re. SBase, which may be of help to
your readers:
> Hello Ernest,
>
>
> The upgrade to SBase4 Pro 1.36 is $50 US the new manuals are also
> available for $50 for the set.
 I am finding that version 1.30n, which is currently I what I have
now, is not compatible with the OS 3.5's printer.device. The Form
Designer is also not compatible with the printer.device. SBase4 itself
will still let you open the program, open files and work with files,
but locks up when you attempt to print. But the Form designer locks up
immediately when launched. (Could be that something on my system is
causing this, but I don't think so).
 The form designer locks up because it attempts to open the
printer.device on startup. As a work-around I was successful with
either of the following:
 1)rename the printer.device, then launch the form designer. That way
form designer complains that it can't open the printer, but still
opens and lets you edit and save forms. Of course, you can't print
with OS3.5 drivers...
 OR,
 2)put the OS3.1 compatible printer.device and printer drivers back in
service. I have decided to settle for this option.
 So, I'm wondering -- if I make the system upgrade to Workbench 3.9,
will SBase4 run happily with that?
 For whatever help it may be to your SBase-user readers, I am
attaching a couple of ".ini" files I modified for the HPDeskjet_842C
printer I recently acquired. I experimented until I got the result you
see in these files. The nice part about the HP_Deskjet842 is that it
lets you print in landscape page orientation with character-based
printer input from the Amiga.
 These .ini files may not work for 1.36 (or any other version without
modification) -- for example, I had to configure the initialization
string so that CR=CR, LF=LF and FF=FF. That's because SBase4 version
1.30 generates CR+LF for end of lines, instead of LF only for
end-of-line as the Amiga system printer.device expects.
Ernest
~~~~~~
Ernest,
 Thank you for a very informative letter. I regret having to edit it
to make it fit. I also regret that we can't put your .ini files in the
the newsletter for a variety of reasons. I would _strongly_ encourage
you to put them up on Aminet where everyone can benefit from them.
 I also suspect that whatever works for you under 3.5 will continue to
work under 3.9, though I can't be 100% sure. I'm pretty sure you would
continue to have the same issues with printer drivers.
 Please see also the next letter.

Brad,

Here are some comments on your story.

> We'd love to run such information, and will if we get any stories or
>press releases that cover these products. SuperBase - most recently
>SBase 4 Pro or Personal - is still the database manager I use when I
>want to get real work done.

The best information I have is this...

 SuperBase is now SBase 4 Pro. It is alive and kicking at Mr.
Hardware. Call or ask him, or better yet, come to the Amiga2001 show
and see it in person. (Check out our web site at:
http://www.amiga-stl.com)

 Russ Norby (the new Mr. Hardware) has released updates to SBase 4
Pro, and is actively working on it. In regards to Joe (the original
Mr. Hardware), he is deceased. His wife Pam did programming on SBase 4
Pro until turning it over to Russ.

 Mr. Hardware (Russ), is the seller of SuperBase on the Amiga. The
original developers went to the ibm. Pam had been doing some of the
programing and has now gone to other committments. So Russ Norby is
your man. He is Mr. Hardware now. You can reach Russ at
1-631-821-2364. You you can also check his web site at
http://www.li.net/~hardware Mr Hardware Computersf is located at 38
Pearl Rd. RockyPoint NY 11778.

~~~~~~
Bob,
 Thanks very much for the information. It's pretty obvious to me that
SuperBase, in any incarnation, is still one of the most formidible and
popular programs on the Amiga. We hope Mr. Hardware can keep it around
for a long time, and make the jump to Amiga DE at some point.
 I'm looking forward to seeing you in St. Louis - wouldn't miss the
super shows you run there for anything!
Executive Update - St. Louis and Beyond
Greetings to the Amiga Family:
 In Melbourne this last year, I was able to surprise many of you with
several announcements that were unexpected, and we delivered on each
of those.
 Now we have a new show coming up in St. Louis. In a few weeks we will
all learn...
 Where is the AmigaOne? Will Cringley finally eat his words about a
new Amiga? What about AmigaDE on PDA's, Set Top Boxes, Internet
Appliances, or even desktops? Will Tom and Nicole stay together or is
it over? Is there life for the AmigaOS after 3.9?
 Contrary to the rumors and what many people are saying about our
demise, or that we are going to have the same fate of the others
before us, we have a big surprise for all of them.
 I look forward to visiting with all of you in St. Louis, and I look
forward to taking over the Hotel, and the surrounding area with the
Amiga Spirit, and Community.
 I hope to see many of you there.
 There is still time, and in 6 weeks, it will all be known.
Bill McEwen, and the rest of the Amiga Team
 (Amiga Inc.) There is tremendous potential for distribution of your
applications, games and other content for one of the world's largest
manufacturers of PDA hardware. The projection is for more than 7
million units to be sold by the end of 2001 and there are already
several million units on the market at this time. There will be
specific requirements as far as style, type of applications,
distribution rights and certification of content. Matt will have more
details on this in the near future.
 If you are interested in developing PDA applications and games for a
specific manufacturer who will use Amiga Inc. for content delivery,
please contact Matt Fontenot, Amiga's Product Manager, as soon as
possible. This is a serious project for those with an interest in
providing content and we will open a new mailing list for it.
 This project is for both open source and commercial content
providers, so no matter what your choice of development is, you are
cordially invited to apply. To get further details, though, you must
have a signed NDA on file with Amiga. You can get an NDA form from
http://www.amigadev.net under the legal menu, right hand menu bar.
 Just fill it out and fax it to Gary Peake's attention at
Hello,
One news from a new Italian Project: Amiga Server Ring
 Hello everyone. The project name is Amiga Server Ring. The idea is to
group all the Amigas used as servers on the net under a common flag.
With the Amiga Server Ring (ASR) we want to create a net among Amiga
servers, in order to offer services to Amigans worldwide, advertise
the Amiga as server/workstation and help the AmigaOS sys
administrators and all the users that need it. There are no
requirements to satisfy to join our team, anyone who wants to help us
can do it, either providing a little bit of their bandwidth, or "only"
their experience. Since the project has just started, webmasters,
graficians, DTP designers, translators, experienced SysOPs,
betatesters, willing Amigans are welcome. Talking about the practical
aspect and about the implied benefits, ASR could accomplish to many
tasks, think about a Quake server for Amiga users only, or to a mail
account @ASR.org (it's only an example, we have no domains at the
moment), or think about your site hosted on an ASR server without the
obligation to show annoying ads banners (apart from the ASR banner of
course :-), or fast web and ftp site mirrors, or a shoutcast radio
with Amiga news and good music, a enthralling MUD for adventurous, a
stable and secure irc server, a powerful AmigaDOS shell via telnet for
ircbots, etc. Keep in mind that all these things depend on you!
 If you want to contact us: encelo@amiworld.it, specifying "Amiga
Server Ring" in the subject, please.
There is a special channel on IRCnet: #AmigaServer
more then one year ago ;), the development has been taken over by
Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz.
 · To use Frogger you will need an Amiga with 68k CPU (68030, 68040,
 I see since Yahoo have taken over eGroups they have decided to
re-introduce ads into distributed e-mails - it was only a matter of
time... I just thought I'd like to let you know I have updated my YAM
script to now work with yahoogroups. The update can be found at:
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/comm/mail/YahooGpScan1_1.lha
Short:    Strips YahooGroup adverts.         V1.1
Uploader: Steve Bowman (Steve & Ulli Bowman <stevebow@hotkey.net.au>)
Author:   ©2000 Steve Bowman (Steve & Ulli Bowman
Version:  1.1 (30-Jan-2001)
Type:     comm/mail
Replaces: comm/mail/eGroupsScan1_0.lha
Requires: YAM 2+, AWNPipe: & ClassAct if you have OS3.1 or earlier.
 About 80% of my incoming mail comes via YahooGroups. When they took
over eGroups, the advertising disappeared - for a short time. Now it
has returned. This script is only an update to the V1.0 eGroups script
to take into account the changes YahooGroups have made since the
takeover. The only change for existing users is to change you YAM
ARexx setting to the name of the script, now YahooGroupsScanner.rexx.
 This started out as a very basic script, but I just kept adding and
adding to it. :^) I have done extensive testing, and although it works
fine on my setup it may not on yours. Please report any problems.
FEATURES:
· Reaction (ClassAct) GUI with progress bar and info on number of
  messages scanned and adverts stripped.
· Will locate the Incoming Folder regardless of its actual name or
  postion in the folder list or language (I hope...) YAM is running in.
· Will only scan mails flagged as New in the Incoming Folder - because if
  you're anything like me you will usually have ~50 Read mails in your
  incoming folder waiting to be manually archived.  :^)
· If no new mails are downloaded from the server, no scanning at all
  takes place.  If there are new mails downloaded, only these new mails
  are scanned.
· Intelligent scanning - if any new messages are not YahooGroup messages,
  they will be skipped.
· After updating Incoming Folder index, returns you to your previous
  folder/state before script exits.  For example, if you have selected a
  number of messages to be deleted in a folder and the script starts
  after a download, you will be restored to that folder with the messages
  reselected when the script terminates.
Some people have queried my method of handling the Incoming folder
externally of Yam instead of going through Yam's ARexx port.  I tried and
tested both methods and found that for  most (but not all) cases,
analyzing the Incoming folder was quite a lot slower than doing it
directly via AmigaDOS commands.
INSTALLATION:
 To install, simply copy this script to YAM:Rexx. Now open YAM's
Config panel and go to the ARexx section. Hilite the "After getting
new mail" item and load "Rexx/YahooGroupsScanner.rexx" into the Script
gadget. Double check the Pop-up selector is on ARexx and not AmigaDOS.
Leave "Open console window unchecked, but (IMPORTANT) make sure "Wait
for termination" is checked ON. Click on Save, and that's it.
 Important - The AWNPipe: device must be installed! Download the
latest AWNPipe: from http://web.ukonline.co.uk/awnpipe
 If you do not have OS3.5, you will need ClassAct. AFAIK the final
ClassAct archive prior to OS3.5 can be found at
http://members.home.com/taston/classact but this is quite old compared
to the more recent replacement found in OS3.5, Reaction.
 You can now buy Payback from Apex Design's on-line shop using your
credit/debit card or by cheque/check. We have also added a FAQ for the
demo and full versions of Payback. Please read it if you've had any
problems getting the game or demo running.
 True or high colour display recommended
 "Payback is a really impressive piece of work..It has a good sense of
humour, a lot of clever features, and some smart level design..it has
been quite a while since I've seen a new Amiga originated title with
this much promise."
                      Andrew Korn, editor of Amigactive
 If you'd always wondered what it would be like to be a master
criminal, then Payback is the game for you. It's entirely non-linear -
to complete a level you simply have to obtain a certain number of
points - how you get those points is entirely up to you; you can do
what the local kingpin tells you, uncover secret missions or just go
on a mad killing spree. There are lots of hidden surprises to
discover, so you'll have to play the game through several times to
find all the extras.
 As you'll have probably guessed, the game is inspired by Grand Theft
Auto, but every effort is being put in to make sure that Payback beats
GTA in every way. The game engine supports perspective correct texture
mapping, environment mapping (reflections), bump mapping, realistic
shadows, alpha-channelling (lens flares, explosions and shockwaves),
12 channel 3D sound and realistic physics. The game will also be
translated into several languages. This is a game that all Amigans can
be proud of.
 If you haven't seen it already on the news sites, then let me just
tell you that Trogladite Software has launched it's beta site. It's
very similar to the old one, but now has many new additions, including
the facility for us to start developing for new platforms.
 I'd also like to stress that this does NOT mean we are leaving the
Amiga. Far from it. A lot of work has gone into the Amiga section, and
a lot of work has gone in to make sure it stays part of Trogladite
Software for as long as we can get people to work it.
 For this reason, we are always on the lookout for new developers with
new ideas, so if any one of you has the skills and would like to
contribute them (and be helped along by our extensive team of artists,
musicians and testers) then don't hesitate to contact
neil@trogsoft.org.
 Finally, check out the Puiblic Beta website at
http://www.trogsoft.org, and please let us know what you think.
 Oh, you'll also notice, if you go to the new Trogsoft Notification
Centre (http://www.trogsoft.org/notify) that we have archives of
messages sent to you using this system, for future reference and
perusal by our visitors. Hope you enjoy this and all the other new
features we are adding to the site daily.
 We are working on many different products at the moment. I can't go
into details, some for legal reasons, and others simply because we
don't want to release details just yet. Suffice to say, we have
programs coming out for file and directory management, advanced text
file operations, personal reminders and much more. Keep checking
http://www.trogsoft.org/amiga/previews for the most up to date
information.
Thanks for your support,
Purpose
 Xami is an X11 server for Amiga that can take advantage of hardware
capabilities of the graphic system for acceleration. It may be
launched from Workbench or CLI, uses the current keyboard mapping and
does not need any extra libraries such as ixemul. Owners of graphic
cards that have Picture in Picture capabilities with Picasso96 will
benefit to use the server in a PIP window.
 So, if you have around you a machine with X11 capabilities such as a
Linux or a BSD box, this is THE software to have !
For more informations and release information on Xami, you may get the
documentation.
* Overlay,
* Scaling,
* DPMS support,
* Big-endian 16 bit modes,
* Pixel clock extended up to 230 MHz (141 MHz for Voodoo Banshee).
 The driver supports all the functions available in the P96 graphic
system for cards based around Voodoo Banshee and Voodoo3 chipsets.
Support for Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 cards is limited to 24-bit graphic
modes.
 Little-endian modes are the main modes for all the PCI type cards
designed for PC computers. For full compatibility with future drivers
releases (TV tuners, Sound cards, 100 Mbps NIC cards, ISDN cards,
etc.) we recommend using little-endian modes. Big-endian mode support
was added for full compatibility with games prepared only for
big-endian modes.
DON'T WAIT, GO FOR IT!
News from the NARR Site
Unfortunately a wrong version of the PlayGUI update was on my homepage and on the PlayGUI-site. The right one you can now find under the title link. There you can also find the GFX-games-database with a new layout. There is a news-site, links, the sections were put on different sites and besides this you can download the last registered games and graphic board patches.
Digital Dreams Entertainment - Changing Server
As I was noticed via e-mail by a DDE team member (Raymond) the DDE site currently is offline due to changing server. Supposedly there are problems in holding the URL. Also the business e-mail addresses are closed. DDE became known to the Amiga world from games like 'Wasted Dreams' or recently 'Codename Hellsquad'.
