Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.16.3
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)
The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Version 1.16.3 of the Greaseweazle Tools provide the following changes:
- FDI: Fix import of FDI image files
- gw read, write: --dd option renamed to --densel
- --dd remains valid for now
- gw write: Option --gen-tg43 generates 8-inch /TG43 signal on pin 2

SFX-Engine: Audio Mixer 3.6
Jeroen Knoester's Audio Mixer (YouTube video of version 2.0) allows real time mixing several samples onto a single channel (up to 4 samples on one channel), while maintaining high performance (3.7% CPU time for 4 samples mixed @ 11KHz on an standard 1MB A500) (amiga-news.de reported). AI assistant for Amiga development: "Amiga Guru"
Cameron Armstrong, author of the chat program AmigaGPT (amiga-news.de reported), has created a custom GPT based on the Amiga documentation so that it is much more accurate for Amiga development than the standard ChatGPT.
Since ChatGPT sometimes knows quite little about Amiga development (and therefore often gives wrong, albeit convincing, answers), he has created a custom GPT tailored to Amiga development.
It has been trained on the entire contents of all current editions of the official reference manuals, some third-party Amiga development books and all current documentation autodocs for AmigaOS 3.2 and 4.1.
Chatting with custom GPTs requires a ChatGPT Plus subscription. (dr)

DIY: "Joystick Reanimator" repairs micro switches using electric impulses
C64 fan 'GI-Joe' - a service technician in real life - has come across many faulty microswitches in his professional life. The silver-plated switching contacts of switches that only have to switch very low currents were often oxidized: the arcing that occurs at higher currents, which "cleans" the oxidizing contacts in a kind of self-cleaning function, does not occur at lower currents. Sooner or later, the electrical resistances become too high due to the oxidizing switching contacts, even though the switch switches mechanically perfectly.
To solve this problem with the microswitches built into many joysticks, GI-Joe invented the "Joystick Reanimator": A joystick that no longer works is connected to the device. When the stick is moved or a fire button is pressed, the associated switch is then activated with a current high enough to generate the "self-cleaning" arc. The circuit board also contains connection sockets for a multimeter so that the electrical resistances of the microswitches built into the joystick can be easily tested.
German and English instructions as well as all documents required for reproduction (including circuit diagram, assembly list and KiCad project files) are available for download. (cg) (Translation: cg)

The staff asks all Amiga Future subscribers to check that they supplied both their current postal and e-mail addresses to the team. The Amiga Future gets packed and shipped a few days prior to its actual release date, so any changes or updates to the address should passed on to AF before we dispatch it. Bear in mind that requests to forward on mail usually do not cover magazines.
The team also asks that you check that your subscription fee(s) are paid - apparently, quite a few subscription fees are still not fully paid. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Controlling Sonos speakers: SonosController 1.4 for all Amiga systems
Known for his Workbench simulation TAWS, Michael Rupp has also been working on his Amiga program for controlling Sonos loudspeakers since 2021: SonosController (amiga-news.de reported). He has now released version 1.4, for the first time also for AROS and thus for all Amiga systems, written in the Hollywood 10.
As the author reports, he had set up AROS One 2.4 on his older "tinker PC", including a functioning network, and was finally able to test the AROS version of the Sonos controller. After implementing a workaround for a small Zune bug, everything now also works with AROS. The changes in the new version:
- NEW: first release for AROS x86
- NEW: ARexx command REINDEX to invoke re-indexing the Sonos music library
- NEW: include all icons in every distribution in new subdrawer "Icons"

TCP networking on Kickstart 1.3: AmigaNOS tutorial
KA9Q aka "NOS" is an early TCP stack designed for Packet Radio or computers with serial connections. The existing Amiga port is compatible with Kickstart 1.3 and supports both SLIP as well as PPP.
In his tutorial, 'neongod' describes - in authentic 90's internet visual design - how he installed and configured AmigaNOS on his Amiga 500 and networked it to a Raspberry Pi using a serial cable. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Coders wanted for an AGA remake of Cryos 'Dune'
Graphic designer 'barjack' is designing a remake of Cryo's classic adventure Dune for AGA based Amiga computers. The new version will preserve the original story, but expand it with new locations, characters and storylines. On top of that it is intended to look a lot better, given that it targets AGA and uses the full PAL resolution - a few example illustrations are supposed to showcase the improved visuals:

Several planned changes to the gameplay have been outlined so far:
- Battles will be fought in an isometric 3D environment, they will be turn based affairs inspired by tactical RPGs
- The resource management part of the game will be expanded with additional trade options
- 6 new characters from Frank Herbert's ScienceFiction novel that the original game is based on
- bigger playfield: the palace is mentioned as an example - it will contain 42 locations now, not just 11
- All locations and characters will feature their own illustrations, all groups will feature their own leader
Barjack has announced his project on amigafrance.com a few days ago, asking for interested coders - preferably native french speakers, to make communication easier. He states he has been contacted by three interested programmers so far, they will be supplied with detailed specifications of his design to see if they're interested to implement it.
Work on the design was started in mid 2023. If the final game will run on a stock A1200 or require a 68030 and some FastRAM is yet to be determined. The game will be distributed for free, but barjack would like to create a limited run of a physical edition. (cg)

Accelerator: PiStorm16 for the Amiga 600 in development
At the title link Michal Schulz describes the PiStorm16 turbocard currently under development. In contrast to the classic PiStorm, an Efinix FPGA chip is used here as with the PiStorm32-lite. This means that no external devices are required for configuration, which is loaded as soon as the Emu68 emulation starts.
A first prototype is currently being manufactured, and separate connections for HDMI and network are planned for the future. (snx)

Emulator: WinUAE 5.2.0
The Amiga emulator WinUAE has been released in version 5.2.0. Changes:
New features/updates
- MacroSystem DraCo emulation. Full emulation except V-Lab Motion video board which is totally undocumented. Amiga clone without Amiga custom chips.
- Picmatic Marbella Vice light gun laser disc arcade game is now fully working.
- American Laser Games and PicMatic statefile support.
- Genlock emulation display positioning/scaling updates.
- Retina Z2 and Z3/Altais RTG board emulation. (NCR 77C22E+ and 77C32BLT SVGA chips)
- S3 Trio64 PCI RTG board.
- On screen led font is now configurable, settings in GUI Miscellaneous panel.
- A2410 updates (Latest Picasso96 driver with DMA mode enabled graphics corruption)
- All emulated RTG boards now autoswitch (Automatic switch between chipset mode and RTG mode). Previously only RTG boards that have built-in switcher and PCI RTG boards autoswitched.
- Do not emulate special cases in native chipset screen mode last and first line(s) unless Overscan mode is Overscan+ or higher. (For example OCS Denise top and bottom line mismatched blanking start and end)
- NTSC mode screen vertical positioning improved.
- Disk swapper insert/remove cursor position now works as expected. Same image can be inserted in multiple slots.
5.1.0 Bugs fixes
- Fast 68020+ mode interrupt timing fix. (Some games hung or had missing or badly playing sound)
- Copper timing was unreliable in non-CE modes (Mainly affected horizontally multiplexed sprites)
- Dark mode was not initialized if config file was started directly (for example from command line), without opening GUI. Some sub-dialogs didn’t support dark mode.
- Zero length disk DMA with enabled disk word sync never finished (some copy protections failed to work).
- Game Ports panel default config overrode button 4 with on screen keyboard enable/disable option even if it was already configured in Input panel.
Older bug fixes
- Any TV overscan option + NTSC mode: few pixel grapohics corruption was visible in right edge of screen.
- Many hardware emulated RTG boards had problems with horizontal panning.
- 68040 MMU emulation fix. (MOVEM restart didn’t work correctly in all situations and MOVES 68040-only special case bus fault behavior was wrong)
- CyberVision 64/3D and Picasso IV overlay fixes. P96PipDemo is now working correctly.
- Ateo Pixel 64 had BGR/RGB swapped colors in most color depths.
- UAE AHI ignored AHI volume slider setting.
- Fixed mouse cursor jumping randomly when in tablet mode and clicking mouse button(s).
- Game Ports panel input device type getting stuck or entering Test/Remap window crashing in some situations.
- Some config file and registry/ini paths were always written in absolute format even if WinUAE was configured to relative path mode.
- "AVI output enabled" (and few similar on/off buttons) button type changed, previously they worked unexpectedly in some situations, visible state was not always matching internal state.
- Some sub dialogs (for example Gameports input mapping autofire) had old style and no high DPI support.
- 256 color screenshot mode created wrong colors in some situations, usually when AGA and almost all palette entries were allocated.
- Changing some native display settings (Filter/Display panel) settings didn’t reset all required display parameters until full display reset (for example window was resized)

Emulation: BBoot bootloader V0.6 for QEMU
BBoot is a simple, minimal bootloader for loading AmigaOS on QEMU-emulated AmigaOne and Pegasos2 machines, written by Amiga QEMU developer Balaton Zoltan (amiga-news.de reported). It replaces amigaboot.of on Pegasos2 and slb_v2 on AmigaOne and simplifies the booting of AmigaOS 4 under QEMU. A firmware ROM is no longer required. The current version 0.6 solves problems when booting the AmigaOne machine with the latest QEMU 9 version.
As Balaton Zoltan kindly explains to us, this new version is currently only required for those users who compile QEMU themselves from the current Git master repository, from which version 9.0 will later emerge.
The developer has also provided a tutorial Booting AmigaOS 4.1 on QEMU with BBoot.
However, as Alinea, for example, has informed us, the AmigaOne version of AmigaOS 4 has not been available for some time despite ordering from Hyperion Entertainment. The company could not be reached for comment. (dr)

ProTrekkr is a tracker program combining a software synthesizer together with a traditional samples tracker which can (mainly) be used to create electronic music (like psytrance, trance goa, hard acid, IDM, chip, techno, jungle, etc.) targeting small sized intros, demos or games. Now version 2.6.5 was released for AROS (and FreeBSD, macOS and Windows). Changes:
- Added handling for 512 midi patches via bank selection.
- Fixed a couple of bugs in the standalone replay.
- Added effects 3F & 40 to set the scale of the two 303 units.
- The file keyboards.txt was missing from the repository.
- Added effects 29, 2A & 2B to turn tracks compressor on/off, set compression threshold & ratio respectively.
- Fixed the audio bug on Intel Macs.
Download: ptk_v2.6.6_aros.zip (23 MB)
Update (21.02.2024, 06:05):
Version 2.6.6 is available and the download link above was adapted. Changes:
- Doesn't actualize UI from audio thread anymore (which fixed a few issues).
- Fixed the 303 units note off bug.
- Added a function to swap two instruments in the patterns.
- Refactored a lot of the code

Tool: EmptyADF 1.0
After several beta versions, Darren 'dmcoles' Cole released the first stable version of "ReBuild" about a week ago, which should make it possible to create graphical user interfaces for ReAction, the evolution of ClassAct (amiga-news.de reported). Krzysztof Donat (bitplan) has now used ReBuild to create the EmptyADF tool, which can be used to generate empty ADF files. Main features:
- creating DD (880 KB) or HD (1.76 MB) disk images
- creating OFS or FFS disk images
- creating images with or without system bootblock
- creating disk images with your own label
- completing system disk dates:
- last root alteration date
- last disk alteration date
- filesystem creation date
He tested it under AmigaOS 3.2, but it should run on any Amiga with Kickstart 3.0+ and installed ReAction libraries. (dr)

Twin-Stick-Shooter: Pre-Order of boxed editions of Cecconoid
At the end of 2022, the musician, DJ and developer 'Hoffman' - for example the Amiga port of Knightmare - began porting the game "Cecconoid", originally published by "Triple Eh?": "an 8-bit inspired, flick-screen, twin-stick-shooter, set in an alternate dimension where the pixels are still chunky, and the bad guys are black and white. Except for their dangly red bits..." (YouTube video).
Now Thalamus Digital, an independent video game developer and publisher, is offering the game for pre-order in various boxed versions, which should be available in April 2024. As the developer explained to us when asked, the game has now been finalised and the digital version should also be available when the physical versions start shipping. (dr)

TCP/IP stack: Roadshow 1.15 released
Press release: "Slightly delayed by only 18 months (we are getting faster), the free Roadshow TCP/IP stack 1.15 update is now available to all customers.
This update is focused on improving installation and maintenance tasks, as well as making the installation documentation more useful and accessible. The single documentation file, still small in 2014, became increasingly unwieldy and has become a set of shorter files, each focused on one single aspect of Roadshow. By request, new documentation has been added which details all the files which will be installed for Roadshow.
The single installation script, which combined several tasks, became a set of scripts, each with its own task. The new update script will take care of upgrading an older Roadshow installation (versions 1.9-1.14) as well of upgrading a currently installed demo version to the commercial version.
New commands have been added to automatically find and install network device configuration files and fix errors & defects in the many configuration files Roadshow uses. You may no longer need to find and install the network device configuration files to match your network devices all by yourself.
By request, a 'compact' Roadshow installation disk image (1.76 MByte high-density) is available for the first time, containing a 'reduced' version of the full installation archive. The 'compact' installation is restricted to software built for all Amigas (68000 CPU or better) and omits the large reference documentation.
As before, bug fixes and smaller enhancements have been made, which are detailed in the installation documentation. Some of the bugs resisted detection for more than 20 years... Starting with this Roadshow version, all the commands (in particular ftp, wget and tcpdump) consistently work under Kickstart 2.04, assuming that sufficient memory is available.
The new Roadshow software development kit (SDK), version 1.8, is also available for download. It contains much more example source code than before, including source code for all the new Roadshow commands. The vbcc compiler is fully supported for the first time and the existing gcc compiler support has been significantly improved.
Our thanks go to the beta testers and forum members who helped to make this update possible and to spark the ideas which led to the creation of the new Roadshow commands, the 'compact' installation and the reworked installation documentation!
Roadshow ist available in three formats:
- as a digital download
- on CD-ROM
- on USB card (FAT32-formatted medium)
The CD-ROM and USB card versions include a digital download for Roadshow.
If you already bought the digital download, you can upgrade to the CD ROM or the USB card version for 4,90 ¤, plus shipping, in our online shop.
If you bought the CD-ROM version, you can 'upgrade' to the USB card version for 4,90 ¤, plus shipping, in our online shop. The same holds true if you bought the USB card version and wish to 'upgrade' to the CD-ROM version.
Careful: In order to order an upgrade, you need to do so with the same online shop account which you previously bought Roadshow with.

Blog: Restauration of an A1060 Sidecar, part 1
The A1060 Sidecar is an expansion hardware device developed by Commodore and released in 1986 for the Amiga 1000 computer. It features a complete PC XT-clone system mounted in an expansion case which connected to the expansion bus on the right side of the Amiga 1000 computer.
A few months ago, Richard Körber was very lucky to acquire such a sidecar on eBay and reports on how he restores it in a three-part series. The first part is available at the title link. (dr)

AROS distribution: AROS One 2.4 (x86)
The distribution "AROS One" (screenshot), which is based on the AROS binary interface ABI v0, is now available in version 2.4 for x86 computers. It can be downloaded as a DVD ISO file or as a USB flash image at the title link, where video recordings can also be found.
This is the most stable AROS x86 version to date, with many bug fixes relating to Wanderer and hardware compatibility, the list of which has since been further revised. Above all, however, the distribution has now been compiled with the C library, which makes porting and compiling easier for developers, but requires to be installed from scratch because it is no longer compatible with the old core and the old software included in the contrib archive. Thus own configurations of the included software must therefore be saved and reinstalled manually.
Changes:
- Update AROS One OS System:
- Update Descriptor Datatypes (Image File)
- Update Dopus4 Config
- Update ZuneARC (Fixated LZH Archive)
- New BootSound (Presets/BootSounds)
- Add Menu GRUB "Early Startup Control"

- VorbisTools 1.4.0
- JCalc 0.4
- IconDropx86 1.2
- Image2PDF 2.5
- Potrace 1.16
- Dcraw 8.89
- Memeter 2.2
- WorldTime 1.31
- RNOEffects 2.0
- Demos Mindlapse
- Sacrificio Pagano 2.10
- MCC_Thebar 26.22
- Protrekkr 2.6.4
- Sonos Controller 1.3
- LoView 2024
- World Construction Set 2.031
- Update AROS One Games:
- Abbaye Des Morts

Updates Core ABIv0:
- Functionalities:
- Introduce new C library, synchronized with 64-bit AROS (deadwood)
- Allow linux hosted AROS to work under WSL (Kalamatee)
- Better default mouse cursor image (JuanDoble07)
- Early Boot Menu made more functional (JuanDoble07, Kalamatee)
- Updates:
- AROS build system (deadwood)
- Italian and Polish translations (AMIGASYSTEM, subocz)
- Prefs/Boot 1.4 (deadwood)
- Functional fixes:

Shoot 'em Up: Early demo version of "NEON world" (V0.1)
After Frank Neumann had not programmed anything for the Amiga with assembler for 30 years, he wants to get back into it with the shoot 'em up "NEON world" (amiga-news.de reported). This second early demo version he calls "Minimum Viable Product" (MVP) having more than 80 enemies in less than a minute playtime. The game should run on an Amiga 500.

Apollo cards: File sharing tool "ApolloExplorer" v1.1.3 (update)
ApolloExplorer is a simple file exchange programme that can be used to transfer files from a PC to an Amiga running an Apollo card and vice versa over the network. A server software runs in the background on the Amiga and allows a client running on a PC with Windows, Linux or MacOS to connect to the Amiga and browse the local hard drives. This is the first stable version, while previous ones were still considered as beta versions. Changes:
- A problem where certain Apollo Accelerator targeted distributions used an icon for the SD Card that didn't appear in the PC client browser has been fixed.
- Similarly, FAT filesystems (SD Cards are formated such) will get the default def_SD0.info icon if this available on the Amiga.
Update: (12.02.2024, 20:18, dr)
The developer has pointed out that his application should basically run on all Amigas that are equipped with sufficient CPU and RAM to run a web browser. For example, ApolloExplorer should work on PiStorm Amigas or 68030 Amigas. (dr)

Music: Piano arrangements of Amiga game music
Grazia Pizzuto is a church musician in Bonn and teaches piano and improvisation. She also runs a YouTube channel where she presents piano arrangements of game music, including Amiga games. She has recently published the following songs:
When asked how she came to arrange and play Amiga game music, Grazia kindly replied:
"I have never had an Amiga myself. It all started when my husband introduced me to Chris Hülsbeck's Piano Collection. These are sheet music and CD/mp3s that we had supported as a Kickstarter project. When I heard this music for the first time, it immediately appealed to me and since then I've always been looking for good music in (retro) computer games.
Several factors play a role in the selection of the pieces: First and foremost, I consider the recommendations/tips from my viewers. Another decisive factor is how much the pieces appeal to me personally. I also talk to my husband about how much a piece of music evokes nostalgia in him (he had a C64 and knew the Amiga from friends). Next, I check whether there is already sheet music available, for example on Musescore, or whether I have to arrange the piece myself.
For the Amiga songs I often work with MOD files in an MOD file tracker. If I have neither notes nor MODs, I often listen to the originals and then write the notes from what I hear. Of course, I also have a look at longplays to get an idea of the game. Occasionally I play one or two games on emulators (Vice, WinUAE, RetroArch) to get a feel for the gameplay."
Thank you very much, Grazia. We look forward to many more Amiga titles! (dr)

Programming language: Amiga C/C++ Visual Studio Code Extension 1.7.7
Bartman', member of the demo group 'Abyss', provides with 'amiga-debug' a 'Visual Studio Code' extension for "compiling, debugging and profiling Amiga C/C++ programs compiled by the bundled gcc 13.1 with the bundled WinUAE/FS-UAE and GDB." (YouTube video). Changes of version 1.7.7:
- FIX: Resource bitmap colors red & blue swapped
- FIX: auto-reload .size.amigaprofile, .shrinklerstats if changed on disk
- CHG: changed shrinkler output name from a.exe.config.shrinkler to a.shrinkler_config.exe so you can use EXE2ADF on the resulting shrinkled file
- CHG: Makefile: don't strip symbol names (-s) in elf2hunk so Shrinkler can display nicer shrinklerstats
- FIX: fixed/optimized memclr
- NEW: ELF disassembly: move cursor with Shift to show accumulated cycle counts
- FIX: flashing document when Show Source has been disabled in Profiler Assembly view

AROS: CAMD MIDI driver (update)
In our (German) news item on the release of version 1.0 of the multimedia MIDI sequencer BarsnPipes for Amiga OS4.1, Alfred Faust stated: "Before I made the OS4.1 FE version, I worked intensively on the AROS version. Unfortunately, AROS lacks a usable MIDI transfer. Without this, BarsnPipes is NOT usable. I had tried very hard to write a CAMD driver for USB MIDI transmission. Unfortunately, this did not lead to the success I had hoped for."
In a thread on AROS World, help was sought in this regard, which Franck 'hitchhikr' Charlet has now provided using his CAMD-MIDI driver under the title link.
Regarding the installtion he has written:
- Delete any file present in the devs:midi directory (probably just "debugdriver")
- Copy the file "mididriver" into devs:midi directory.
- Reboot.
In the archive there are two tools:
- "ShowClusters" will show the midi ports of the driver.
- "MidiWatch" will monitor a given port as argument (usually mididriver.in.0 or mididriver.out.0).
Update: (16.02.2024, 06:18, dr)
A new version is available on Franck 'hitchhikr' Charlet's website: it fixes a bug that caused AROS to crash. He has also added the shell commands MidiThru (forwards messages from one port to another) and MidiSendC (sends a middle C to a specific port).
Charlet also found out that there are two bugs in camdusbmidi.class.c that prevent the sending of multiple midi messages in the nParseMidiOut() function. A corrected version is now also included in the archive. The following must therefore be installed:
- Copy "mididriver" into devs:midi (and remove any file that may be there before).
- Replace "camdusbmidi.class" from SYS:Classes/USB with the one included in the archive.
- Reboot.

Blog: Well-known Secrets of AmigaDOS
As Carl Svenssons writes in his blog entry "Well-known Secrets of AmigaDOS", most consumer models of the Amiga series were shipped with heavily watered-down documentation. The Amiga 500 was an exception to this rule, but owners of later machines - such as the A1200 - may not have received any documentation for the command line portion of AmigaOS at all.
Furthermore, the normal end user had no access to the official developer documentation. His present essay is dedicated to hidden or even completely undocumented or unfinished features of AmigaDOS versions 2 and 3. (dr)

Terrain models: World Construction Set 2.031 (Emerald-Berta), AmigaOS 3 and AROS
As can be read in the history of the development of their software products, Gary Huber of Questar Productions recognized the potential of the graphics capabilities of the personal computers of the time in the late 1980s and began researching and developing software for his Amiga computer to combine 3D terrain data and landscape/vegetation information into a computer-generated synthetic 3D view with colored trees (coniferous and deciduous), ground cover patterns, sky and haze.
Other software companies had developed similar software for the Amiga, including VistaPro from Virtual Reality Labs and the "Scenery Generator" (later "Scenery Animator") from Naturalgfx and Panorama. All included a basic method of automatically placing one or more types of vegetation based on local terrain criteria, usually using elevation and slope. However, none of the available commercial tools could handle large, detailed regions, making them unusable for commercial and industrial terrain mapping.
In 1992, Huber began developing algorithms and programs to meet the requirements he had predicted. Originally written in an advanced BASIC language and later rewritten in C for speed reasons. Chris Hanson joined Questar and Huber and helped develop the user interface, language conversion, optimization and graphics. The result, announced in August 1994, was World Construction Set 1 (WCS) for the Amiga with a host of advanced features (and a name inspired by the popular Electronic Arts audio tool of the time, "Deluxe Music Construction Set"). WCS V1 extended the land cover and vegetation placement techniques of earlier software to include the placement of so-called "ecosystems".
WCS V2 (video) for the Amiga was released in late 1995, followed by a Windows version in January 1996. Version 2 introduced oceans with waves and reflections, DEM buildings, realistic looking clouds, sun and moon, better vegetation and OpenGL support.
Both versions 1.25 and 2.04 are available as packed ADF files on the 3DNature.com website. The corresponding source files were published on GitHub some nine years ago. Alexander Fritsch began working on the source files containing the penultimate version 2.03 ("Emerald") in 2017. As he tells us, the project first had to be made gcc-compatible. The aim of his new compilation using Bebbo's gcc was and is to achieve the highest possible speed. This required very extensive tests with various compiler options and lengthy test calculations on a real Amiga, always under the same boundary conditions. As Bebbo also continued to work on gcc, it had to be tested again and again to see whether a new compiler version with new optimizations would bring a speed advantage. Since WCS as a complex program is also a test case for the compiler itself, Alexander reports, WCS also revealed errors in the compiler over time, especially with various optimizations and floating point calculations.
As a result, the new version of WCS now available on Aminet on a 25MHz 68040 Amiga only needs 4 hours instead of 5 hours for a "Canyon Sunset" example image. A nice result that would not have been possible without Bebbo's work, as Alexander says, and his gcc. An AROS version is also included in the archive. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: AmiUpdate V2.53 (update 2)
AmiUpdate, the update programme for system components and programmes, was first updated to version 2.50 on 04/02/2024 and then, after some problems, to version 2.51. The changes:
AmiUpdate 2.50
- The http transfer routines did not consider a filename with spaces in it. All filenames
are now run through an encoder prior to the HTTP request being sent. This fixes issues like
the MUI update failing to download.
- update.library 53.19: Added more internal vectors.
- RebootDeamon 2.4:
- Reworked the source to avoid some duplication of code.
- Changed the timer.device handling to avoid memory leaks.
- Removed the pointless cancel button from the countdown requester.
- If update.library could not be loaded, it tried to open an intuition
requester for notification, but intuition had not been opened yet!
AmiUpdate 2.51
- Some internal changes, but nothing functional (unless I added some bugs, of course).
- It seems the http request headers did NOT include the version info in the User-Agent
field, which the server uses. I could have sworn it was included ages ago!
- Added better logging in the case of [405] errors.
- The status bar will now show correctly if no servers are selected.
- RebootDeamon 2.5: Seems there was a long standing bug which just popped up, which could lead to a crash
dealing with the time requests.
Update: (11.02.2024, 14:18, dr)
Meanwhile the author Simon Archer has released version 2.52, which currently cannot be downloaded from the program itself, but from "Downloads" under the title link. Many users had reported problems when they used the program iconified in the background. This now should be fixed. Changes:
- Unfortunately, trying to keep compatibility with OS 4.0 led to problems with the docky part
of application.library, as it always opens V2 of the library interface. As the program is
using the old V1 tags, this threw up an error reported by multiple users. As it is highly
unlikely anyone is still using 4.0, it should not be a problem a huge problem. My aplologies
to any 4.0 users, but now is the time to upgrade!.
- As the ongoing saga with connections to "amiupdate.net" is still ongoing, despite my best
efforts to resolve it, I have now added a simple NSLookup to AmiUpdate in order to put rest
to this issue once and for all. Accesses to "amiupdate.net" and "wwww.amiupdate.net" are now
registered on "my" lookup server and are now redirected to the correct place without any
intervention from the great wide internet.
Update 2: (13.02.2024, 22:01, dr)
And once again AmiUpdate has been updated, now to version 2.53. Users had tried to search for updates from within the prefs program, which caused errors. However, the new AmiUpdate V2.53 only updates the update prefs to version 53.17. The final version 53.18 can then be accessed via a separate update of the prefs program. (dr)

Font: Topaz as TrueType font
When the Amiga 500 was launched in 1987, it had a complete graphical user interface, the Workbench. Many of the resources required for Workbench were stored in ROM, including the default user interface font, a monospaced, 8x8px font called Topaz. It's high contrast, consistently designed and quite compact. However, the problem is that it is a bitmap font with only one font size, and most modern operating systems only use TrueType and OpenType fonts with scaling. The original font also only supports the Latin-1 character set and therefore no non-Latin writing systems or common terminal characters such as boxes or blocks. Screwtape's "Topaz Unicode Project" attempts to solve these two problems.

Controlling Sonos speakers: SonosController 1.3 (AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS)
Known for his Workbench simulation TAWS, Michael Rupp has also been working on his Amiga programme for controlling Sonos loudspeakers since 2021: SonosController (amiga-news.de reported). He has now released version 1.3 of his programme, written in the Hollywood 10 programming language, which is available for MorphOS and AmigaOS 3 and 4.
As the author tells us, he had taken our news item of Hollywood 10 support for Visual Studio Code as an opportunity to continue working on SonosController. Changes:
- NEW: option to show notifications when a new track is played in any zones or, as another option, only in the currently selected zone.
This uses MagicBeacon on MorphOS, Ringhio on AmigaOS 4.x and Ranchero on AmigaOS 3.x (if available).
- NEW (AmigaOS 4.x): show an icon in AmiDock including a context menu featuring the following commands:
- Play/Pause
- Previous track
- Next track
- NEW: powerful ARexx interface, see AmigaGuide for further details
- NEW: detect if a device needs updating and stating this in its label.
- NEW: menuitem "Settings/Update music library now" to invoke a refresh of the Sonos music library.
- NEW: menuitem "Project/About my Sonos system" showing information about all zones found in the connected Sonos system.
- NEW: upgraded to Hollywood 10, hURL 2.0 and XML 2.0
- FIXED: possible crash if album art could not be loaded
Since AmiSSL is now available for AROS, the hURL plugin is now also available for AROS. Michael Rupp is therefore now looking for an AROS user who uses Sonos and could test the SonosController for him. If you are interested, simply send an e-mail to the author. (dr)

Blog: Limitations of the HAM mode explained on the Hamulet engine
Recently, the developer of the game Hamulet - a demo version was included in issue 10 of the English-language Amiga magazine "WhatIFF?" - published a YouTube video that is intended to demonstrate as a proof-of-concept whether a puzzle or platform game could be feasible using the Hamulet engine in HAM and has the following features:
- Large 8-way scrollable HAM screen with no visible fringing
- Massive animated bobs (Blitter objects), the largest one being 144x170 pixels
- Copper list to create a parallax effect of a "transparent" HAM screen, where the background sky gradient is visible and scrolls at a lower speed
- Multiple animated sprites
- Music by Virgill
- Runs on Amiga 500, requires 1MB of chip
Appunti Digitali is an Italian website that deals with technology issues that the operators know or can judge from their own (professional) experience. The article now published under the title link deals with this video and the limitations of HAM. (dr)

Java program: ham_convert 1.9.4
Sebastian Sieczko's java-based program ham_convert converts modern graphic formats to the Amiga's HAM format and is now available in version 1.9.4. Changes:
- Added DynamicHires variant with an AGA palette. To enable select mode=Amiga AGA Dynamic HiRes/PCHG software mode.
- Implemented PCHGF_32BIT format to be used by DynamicHires AGA and Atari 8-bit ILBM IFF files (using BigLineChanges). DynamicHires OCS uses PCHGF_4BIT (SmallLineChanges) format IFF limited to RGB444. https://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/ILBM_IFF_Interleaved_Bitmap#ILBM.PCHG was uses as a reference. This enabled accurate encoding of the Atari 8-bit palette in the iff files.
- Extra EHB palette optimization was renamed extra OCS palette optimization and extended to support also 2/4/8/16/32-color modes (to be extended later).
- Acorn Archimedes VIDC1 256-color mode (out of 4096).

Shoot'em Up: BreakThru V1.0
Since the beginning of last year, 'acidbottle' has been working on the Amiga conversion of the horizontal shoot'em up Breakthru, which was originally published by Data East in 1986: the player controls an armed military vehicle and must make his way through enemy forces - consisting of soldiers, flamethrowers, helicopters, tanks, jeeps etc. - to ultimately retrieve a stolen fighter plane. - The player must make his way through enemy forces - consisting of soldiers, flamethrowers, tanks, jeeps, etc. - to ultimately retrieve a stolen fighter plane (YouTube video).
He has now released version 1.0, which requires a 2-button controller and an Amiga with at least 1MB chip RAM, 1MB additional RAM and a CPU with 14MHz or better. A hard disc is also recommended. (dr)

Developer diary: Update on the game "The Gate" #1
At the beginning of October last year , we introduced the AMOS game "The Gate" by Fabio 'Allanon' Falcucci, a mixture of "Impossible Mission" and "Project Firestart" with his own ideas and concepts. We asked the developer to tell us about the current state of development. Here is his report, illustrated by his latest YouTube video:
"I still don't have a list of requirements but I'm targeting stock Amiga 1200 for this project, fingers crossed :)
I'm still writing the engine but I've made big progresses adding new features, fixing bugs and optimizing the code to make it as smooth as possible.
Here is a list of what's new since my last progress report:
- Doors
- Doors can be operated with the [action key], a pop up screen will appear to allow the user to operate the door.
- Unlocked doors can be operated freely
- Some of them may require a key to be opened
- Some of them may require a terminal to be opened
- Some of them may require to complete an event to be opened, in this case the hero will say something about it to give an hint to the user.
- Furnitures
- Furnitures are essentially containers and they hold items: the hero search them (like already seen in Impossible Mission) and when the furniture is searched an auto-pick screen is displayed to let the user know what items has been picked and what will be leaved into the container, not picked items can be picked later.
- Furnitures may require a terminal to be unlocked
- Furnitures may require a dialog option to be selected to be unlocked
- Terminals: I've developed a simple scripting language for this for maximum flexibility.
Terminals graphics is also nice because I've reproduced old monitor color glitches and out-of-sync effects.
Terminals that require keys can be hacked by the player using a special hacking tool that will be available in the game.
Each terminal can be tuned by the script that is run (colors, effects, print speed, etc...).
I'm very proud of how I implemented terminals: they run script programs that allow me to simulate terminals with text interfaces.
From terminals the user is able to:
- Operate doors (open/close/unlock)
- Operate furnitures (unlock)
- Display informative text to help the hero with its quest
- Minigames
- An many more actions and nice things
- Dialogs
- Like I've done for terminals, I've used scripts to run dialogs between characters but also when the hero express a thought.
Dialogs use almost the same scripting language developed for the terminals but with more commands for certain situations and to display the portrait (and the needed expressions) of the character that is talking.
This system is very flexible and you may be able to unlock a door after having talked to an NPC for example
- Game menu, which let the user access the following functions:
- Documents : You can read here all the docs the hero has gathered (implemented)
- Tools : From here the hero can review and equip special tools he found during the adventure (implemented), these tools are unique and can be used with the right mouse button once equipped (implemented).
- Map : A simple automap system, not yet implemented. I'd like to let the player to type map notes.
- Diary : This is a personal diary, the player can freely take notes here. Not yet implemented and not sure if it is nice or not.
- System : From here the player can load and save the game. Not yet implemented.
- Settings : Game settings. Not yet implemented.
About the tools
I've already designed the tools that the player will find during its adventure, they are 8 in total and the hero can equip them, once at a time, from the game menu.
Once equipped some tools can be triggered automatically, some manually (with the right mouse button) and some have both the functionalities.
For example there is a device called "Relife" that has two functions when equipped:
- 1: If the hero is suddenly killed the device tranfers its energy into the hero body and regenerate some of his life points.
- 2: Pushing the right mouse button (and holding it down) the device's energy refill the hero hit points.
The "Relife" device regenerates its energy over time, very slowly.
Another example is the "Hacking Device" which I'm currently working on: when equipped the hero will be able to hack any locked terminal, the hacking will be completed if the player will be able to resolve a mini-game. We all know Fallout 3/4 terminals & Mass Effect ones right? :)
What has to be done?
- Game menu
- Tools/Special devices (2 of 8 implemented)
- Traps
- NPCs
- Enemies
Those will complete the engine and I will focus on the maps and the story, which is already on my desk :)

Chat software: AmigaGPT V1.4.2 for AmigaOS 3 and 4
Cameron Armstrong has written AmigaGPT, a chat program for AmigaOS 3.2 that uses the power of the chatbot ChatGPT (amiga-news.de reported). Originally written for AmigaOS 3.2, the programme meanwhile also supports AmigaOS 3.9, Cloanto's Workbench 3.X and AmigaOS 4.1. Changes of version 1.4.2:
- Replaced clicktabs for AmigaOS 3.X since the version is too old and will crash. 3.X users can select the mode at startup.

DIY: Firmware 1.02 for Amiga 4000 accelerator board "Z3660"
In October 2021, developer 'shanshe' had started a project on GitHub for the Amiga 4000 turbo board "Z3660" based on John "Chucky" Hertell's A3660 board and the Z-turn Board (amiga-news.de reported). The now available firmware 1.02 improves the SCSI emulation introduced with firmware 1.01 in terms of speed and stability. (dr)
