History of technology: The Rise and Fall of 3M's Floppy Disc IEEE, an online magazine specialising in technology topics, has published a background report on the storage medium floppy disk and the company 3M that is well worth reading. Floppy discs had an amazingly long life - it was only in January 2024 that the Japanese government announced that it would no longer require floppy disc copies of government applications. 3M got out of the data storage business some 28 years ago when it transferred its floppy disc production to an outsourced company called Imation. Imation still exists, under the name Glassbridge Enterprises, but with a much lower profile. You can read the entire article in English under the title link. (nba) [News message: 05.
