Midi: camd.library V40, CamdBnp-Tools
The camd library v40 as well as the CamdBnp tools for BarsnPipes were
released on the NSM page.
'camd' is a shared library for midi, which is part of the AmigaOS. Due to
several problems with the original one and because there was no camd.library for
AROS, this library was completely new programmed. This one should work like
the original one and was successfully tested with 'BarsnPipes' 'Radium', and the
'CAMD' toolkit.
An additional driver 'mmp' and a special camd midi driver for WinUAE are
available for download for this library.
The 'camdbnp.lha.zip' archive contains 64 tools for BarsnPipes, which should
simplify the communication with other programs. The 'camd library' is used for
this communication.
'camd40.lha' and 'mmp.lha' contains both binary and source code
(APL, AROS Public License). The includes are part of the AROS source code and
also available via e-mail.

Additionally we have a new (English) tutorial. It's all about fonts. We
explain the use of different fonts and font tools as well as the conversion of
different font types that you can use on the Amiga. We also deal with webfonts and
the use of fonts in word processors.
And then we have received again some more entries of games and scene demos that support graphics cards. More to follow soon.

Role-playing game: Exult 0.93alpha4
Rüdiger Hanke writes:
My Exult port for Amiga is available for download on my homepage. Exult is a role-playing
game engine which can interpret Ultima 7 datafiles. Ultima 7 still captivates after many
years with an epic storyline, a vast world and many details. You can find some screenshots
on my webpage.
The story: 200 years have passed in Britannia since your last visit as the Avatar.
Driven by the mockery of a demonic creature calling itself "The Guardian", you travel
once more to Britannia and arrive in Trinsic on a scene of gruesome murder. Maybe the
new organization "The Fellowship", which is gaining more and more influence
in the lands, is involved in it? Or maybe this is just the beginning of a larger plan that might endanger
all Britannia?
Required is an Amiga with FPU and graphics card as well as the original PC game by Origin. Please
note that the files on the disk version are usually packed and have to be installed on an
MS-DOS system to get the required files. Alternately, the uncompressed game is contained on
the "Ultima Collection" CD-ROM. As a small goodie for the Amiga I have included a preferences
program with which you can change all game options with a graphical interface on OS3.5 and above.
An interesting tidbit: While porting the game, I found a sourcecode to read IFF files. Indeed,
some of the Ultima 7 files are in IFF format. Even the chunk lengths are in Motorola and not
Intel byteorder ... (ps) (Translation: rh)

e.p.i.c. interactive: Feeble Ubdate
Thomas Steiding of e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment GmbH wrote:
Update & FAQs about The Feeble Files
As announced last week we require at least 400 pre-orders to enable an Amiga port
of the cartoon adventure The Feeble Files. Including today's entries we received
232 pre-orders and we are hoping, that the following days will bring the rest. The game
can be pre-orders from us (order@epic-interactive.com)
or from any stockist.
With the enclosed FAQ we hope to be able to answers some frequently asked
questions regarding the announcement.
Q: What is The Feeble Files about?
A: The Feeble Files is the official sequel to Simon The Sorcerer II by the
British Adventuresoft company. Feeble is a little green alien having the task to
make circles in grain fields on earth. He lives in a world restrictively ruled by the Omnibrain
and he is an honest citizen never violating the group's big catalog of rules. But one day this kind
hearted gawky stumbles into a full-grown conspiracy against the Omnibrain. As one can see from the
screenshots on our homepage, the characters of this game are fully rendered. The game comes along
with complete German or English spoken samples. The German games magazine PC-Games rated the title
at 80%, then. The German vocals came for example from the German movie voices of Brad Pitt, Whoopi
Goldberg, and Roseanne. More information and topical Mac screenshot are to find on our homepage.
Q: What Amiga do I need for The Feeble Files?
A: The Feeble Files requires an Amiga equipped with a 4 MB graphics board and 32 MB of memory.
Furthermore a 68060 OR a PPC CPU is required. Theoretically the game would run on a 68040/40, but
sure would be very very slow on this configuration.
Q: When will the game be out?
A: As soon as we have received 400 pre-orders (no matter if those were directly ordered
from us or from a vendor - who forwards the orders to us), we will start to port the game to
the Amiga. Due to the porting engine of our leader of development, Paul Burkey, the game
then should be shipping for the Amiga within 6 weeks!!
Q: Will there be more Amiga games from e.p.i.c. interactive?
A: Theoretically it would be possible to port to the Amiga more games currently available for the Apple
Macintosh. But since license fees for other games, e.g. like in case of the Settlers clone
Knights&Merchants or the RPG-mix Gorky 17, are much more expensive (and hence the number of
sales to be expected for an Amiga version must be higher), it is clear: If The Feeble Files port will not
become reality, we don't need to start thinking about more games. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Kult is coming home - News at "com!online" 08/2001
The current issue 08/2001 of the German print magazine com!online mentions
the Amiga in the news on page #20 reading that the Amiga boss Bill McEwen announced
the cult-brand soon to come back. The new One PPC 1200 would be under development
specially for this purpose. If this computer will attract enough customers the
company would found new agencies, yet.
The following interesting wording was used for the Amiga:
"In the long run this box cannot be killed", and, "....for the scuffproofed
veteran...".

AROS News
As already reported
there were hardware problems with the server hosting the AROS website.
Some good and bad news about that: the good news is, that
the hardware will be replaced, the bad news is, that the machine will be
connected to a new network and thus the page temporary might not be
available, again, due to DNS conversion.
Here the original message with more details:
As you might have noticed, we had a lot of hardware failures
in the last months. Now there are good and bad news. The good
one is that the hardware will be replaced. The bad one is that
the machine is moved to a different network and this means that
we'll have DNS hell all over again ! The "real" name of the
machine on which AROS is hosted is "sebigbos.hepe.com". This
name should work when aros.org doesn't. So when CVS doesn't like
you anymore, check AROS/scripts/updatecvspath to fix the host name
until I have fixed the DNS server (usually takes only several
weeks...hrm :-). The mailing list runs on lists.hepe.com.
The only thing which will not be reachable for the time
being is the web and the ftp site.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

mSQL database administration program
Who ever dealt with SQL database systems soon realized that in fact
only mSQL comes into question for working offline.
mSQL is the most compact and resource sparing SQL-DBMS for the Amiga.
One example to point this up:
The mSQL daemon requires less than 10% of the resources the MySQL
daemon needs and even can react 4-times faster on client requests
via mUSD (unix socks daemon).
The biggest disadvantage of all SQL systems for the Amiga is the lack
of any GUI software for administration and database care.
That's why I wrote a program named mSQL-Administrator, which
contains the operation of the following executables of the "mSQL.bin"
directory:
msql, msql2d, msqladmin, msqldump, msqlexport, msqlimport,
relshow, and mUSD.

Edivision LLC working with Amiga Inc.
Edivision Teams Up With Amiga To Develop Exciting New Content
Snoqualmie, WA - July 12, 2001
Edivision LLC announced today that they would create game applications for the Amiga Digital Environment
(AmigaDE). The company plans to create 3 titles in the coming year for the AmigaDE environment. The games
will be distributed through the Sharp Space Town web site for release in Japan and through other Amiga
distribution channels worldwide. Amiga and Edivision also announced a joint relationship where Edivision
would provide key pieces of technology for the AmigaDE.
The principals at Edivision have more than 30 years of
experience in the computer graphics field. Patrick Roberts
created 2D and 3D effects for Walt Disney's feature animation
classic "Dinosaur". He has also created software and animation
for Dreamworks Animation, Disney Classics and the Disney
channel. Jeremy Engelman is one of the finest 3D artists in the
world. His best-known work is the artwork for Cyan's Riven, the
sequel to Myst. Steven Haun is an award-winning computer
graphics producer with more than 10 years of experience in the
computer graphics and entertainment industry. His credits
include effects production for Warner Brothers, Universal
Pictures, ABC, CBS, and Fox Television.
"This relationship with Edivision will offer consumers some
exciting content and an enjoyable experience that they will want
to share with others," said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of
Amiga, Inc. "Patrick, Jeremy and Steven are longtime supporters
of Amiga and we appreciate their contributions to driving
adoption of our software. With their expertise in gaming and the
entertainment industry, we look forward to some revolutionary
games for the PDA market."
"We are very excited to be working with Amiga to generate
compelling content for the AmigaDE," said Patrick Roberts, one
of the founders at Edivision. "When Amiga announced their
relation with Sharp, we saw this as an opportunity to get in
early on a new, exciting gaming platform. Devices like the Sharp
Zaurus and other PDA's offer the ability to reach a new and
different generation of gamers."
Edivision will focus on original titles for its first set of
releases. The company is also negotiating with other content
providers to bring their titles to the AmigaDE platform.
The market for video games in the United States, which includes
arcade, PC, console, and online gaming, is currently estimated
to be worth $11 billion. The AmigaDE platform allows developers
to create game applications that target this market. The binary
portable nature of AmigaDE content allows applications to
migrate seamlessly from cell phones and handheld devices to
set-top boxes and up to desktop machines and servers.
Edivision Press Release
Los Angeles, CA - July ##, 2001
Edivision LLC announced today that it has signed a distribution agreement
with Amiga, Inc. Amiga, Inc. will have world-wide distribution rights on
software titles Edivision will produce using the
AmigaDE operating environment. Also under the agreement Edivision will make
technology it develops for its AmigaDE titles available to Amiga, Inc.
Edivision LLC will create 3 development labels over the next year that run on the AmigaDE platform.
Two labels will be exclusively devoted to entertainment
titles, while the third will provide utilities, drivers, and extended
functionality. Edivision will focus on original titles for its first set
of releases, but the company is also negotiating with other developers to
bring their titles to the AmigaDE platform.
"This relationship with Edivision will offer consumers some exciting content
and an enjoyable experience that they will want to share with others," said
Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga, Inc. "With their expertise in
gaming and the entertainment industry, we look forward to some revolutionary
games for the PDA market."
"Titles created for the AmigaDE are capable of running unmodified on a
number of platforms including PocketPC, Zaurus, Windows, and Linux. This
gives us a tremendous advantage in bringing a title to market." remarked
Steven Haun, CFO of Edivision. "It allows us to focus development on the
title itself and not the limitations of cross-platform least common
denominator intrinsics."
About Amiga Inc.

porting applications to a new multi-media operating systems
which is hardware agnostic. AmigaDE is a joint development
effort between the Tao Group of Reading England, and Amiga

Genetic Species for Gameboy Advance petition
Milan Pollé (author of the site, but not the petition pages) write:
Seeing the FPS games announced for the Gameboy Advance started me thinking
about the awesome Amiga game Genetic Species, by
Marble Eyes.
This game is an FPS with really great atmosphere and elements borrowed
from the classic 'Paradroid', like being able to take over the bodies
and skills of your enemies.
As this game worked well on low-end Amigas, about three years ago, I
thought it might be possible to port it to the Gameboy Advance. The
developers of this game worked for three years on it and only sold
hundreds or at the most a couple of thousands of copies, as the Amiga
market had shrunk when the game was completed, but also because of
piracy. Needless to say the developers were really disappointed.
I coined this idea in the Gameboy Advance forum on www.ign.com
and people were really interested in this game, so they started
contacting the developers, who were suprised by the sudden attention
this game got. At the moment the developers are looking into the
possibilities of doing a port.
We ask anyone interested in a Gameboy Advance version to sign our
petition. Even if in the end a port won't or can't be done, it will
show the developers that their work is appreciated by a lot of
people. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Attention: virus after EBay-auction?
Attention: sellers and byers:
It seems that shortly after the end of an auction some sellers and byers got an e-mail with the sender of the seller or byer that contains a ".exe"-file.
Do not open this file! If you do your Windows-system will be infected with the "W95/Hybris.worm.B"-virus. Maybe this virus makes it possible to attack your system with a subseven program. EBay is allready informed.

Amiga joins Tao in its plans to support Open Contents Platform Association
Snoqualmie, WA - July 13, 2001
Amiga today announced its support of the Open Content Platform Association
(OCPA), The Tao Group, along with Sharp, JVC and Kyocera, launched the
OCPA today to promote the creation of a flexible and open environment
that will benefit hardware vendors and content developers.
The Amiga developer community is the largest and most experienced
at creating applications targeting the intent platform from Tao. Amiga
developers are well known in the industry for creating compelling
multimedia applications. Amiga is already working with a number of
Tao partners to deliver games and productivity applications for the
intent platform.

Hyperion and the StormC 4
Steffen Haeuser wrote:
After our reactions on the "StormC 4 news" I was asked by Ben Hermans to explain
our position on this topic to clarify some misunderstandings and
falsifications.
At Heretic II times we were using a "self development" called gcc-WarpUP, a self
standing port of gcc to WarpUP and 68k. This compiler had the substantial
disadvantage that no debugger - very important for program testing and fast bug
fixing - was available (and wasn't easily made, either). Besides that the
compiling speed was quite slow (despite PPC exe), and there was no GUI
available. At that time this compiler was the only alternative, though:
- SAS/C: Even when leaving aside the missing WarpOS support, this compiler
isn't really suitable for a "big" PC port. Doing a PC port there's normally a
heavy use of C++, and when a compiler isn't 100% compatible with the standard
used by compilers like gcc/VisualC++/Metroworks CodeWarrior - inclusive
possible "enhancements" of these compilers - doing a port is made much more
difficult, if not even impossible. It may well be possible to develop a C project with
such a compiler but not a C++ project. The only one of our projects being not
C++ was Heretic II. And the most of our projects rely HEAVILY on C++, with STL
and all things belonging to it.
Because of that we don't feel like doing long ports and then, when linking,
having to realize that the compiler isn't compatible enough with gcc/... making a
compiler change necessary.
- vbcc: In my opinion this is a great compiler, too, but as it doesn't support
C++ using this compiler is completely out of question for us. Besides that
we prefer a commercial product. In case of bugs you may demand a fast bugfix,
or you get telephone support or so.
But sure, the vbcc is a good compiler - but it simply doesn't suit our needs.
By the way: vbcc has no source level debugger, either (wosdebug is not
source level but assembler level).
- StormC 3: For StormC 3 (in contrary to 4) counts the same as for SAS/C - a
special compiler not compatible enough for the Amiga market.
Now Haage&Partner have decided to drop their "own" code generator in favour of
the gcc code generator - what was welcomed by us - with the version 4 of StormC.
That means: StormC 4 has more in common with gcc-WarpUP than with StormC 3.
That means that with StormC 4 you get all what you get with gcc-WarpUP but
additionally you get the special features of the StormC that gcc-WarpUP doesn't
offer:
- A superb source level debugger
- 40% faster compiling than with gcc-WarpUP thanks to optimizations
(in the PPC version)
- A significiantly more efficient I/O linker library
- A profiler for 68k and PPC
- A graphical IDE
- The possibility to compile via network
- (Partly) Object file compatibility with StormC 3 and vbcc-WarpUP
and SAS/C 68k
- The possibility to create mixedbinaries
- The possibility to easily create PPC shared libraries
- Support possibilities from the developer (very important for us,
no matter what compiler !!!)
Though this sounds like advertising: For a developer of commercial software
there's simply no alternative to StormC 4 on the Amiga.
And I don't see any rason why people absolutely want to talk about an
alternative.
If I only think of the many weeks (!!!) of work the debugger of StormC 4 has
shortened my work on the port of Freespace. These are REAL working hours I have
saved through this.
By the way, the BSD compatibility of the includes of StormC (as gcc derivative)
is considerably better than the one of the CodeWarrior includes for MacOS.

Amiga chooses H&P's StormC as official development environment
July 14, 2001
Amiga Inc is pleased to announce that it is partnering with
HAAGE&PARTNER GmbH, of Glashuetten, Germany in order to provide Amiga
developers with a world class development environment.
Amiga Inc is working closely with HAAGE&PARTNER to provide for the
first their flagship StormC developer package will become the official
Amiga Development System. This will see StormC providing transparent,
language independent support for both the AmigaOS and the
AmigaDE.
"Amiga is committed to moving application development forwards to
support our new architecture." said Fleecy Moss, Chief Technical
Officer of Amiga Inc. "This means dynamic, persistent components,
descriptive, location independent interfaces, brokered services and
a complete separation of design from implementation. HAAGE&PARTNER
have spent many years creating a simple, easy to use, yet powerful
development package for the AmigaOS, and we are delighted to be
working with them as we push forwards.
"We are very pleased about the Amiga certification on StormC",
said Jürgen Haage, General Manager of HAAGE&PARTNER GmbH. "This
certification is a quality assurance for Amiga Inc. and guarantees
the Amiga developer community a continuous further development of
our StormC development system."
The complete press release can be found following the title link. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Hyperion Entertainment: Warp3D for Voodoo 3
We are pleased to announce that our Voodoo 3 Warp 3D V4 drivers for
Prometheus (both 68K and PPC) are now fully completed.
We are currently in the process of rewriting the Warp 3D license agreement so
you can expect the full driver package in the course of the next week.
As we are still getting e-mails about the Elbox situation, we would like to
point out that we have not heard from anybody at Elbox for over two weeks now.
At this point it appears to be highly improbable that we will ever see 3D
drivers for the Elbox's range of PCI products.
Again, we would like to ask everybody mailing us about 3D support for Elbox
PCI hardware to contact Elbox rather than Hyperion Entertainment.
We cannot be held responsible in any way for the lack of 3D support. If 3D
graphics are important to you, we advise you to look into purchasing a
competing PCI product."

Amiga-Mailbox Stardate access disrupted
The Stardate mailbox (Amiga mailbox since 10 years and since more than one year
accessible through web portal http/telnet) can not be reached for some days
because of a lightning stroke.
Also affected is the Dynamite server stardate.2y.net.
Polling boxes and users are asked to switch to the Modem/ISDN numbers

It'll be announced when access via internet is possible again.

Soundtrack and Boing beachballs sought
My name is Bernhard Kellerer, I am Creative Director of the London
film production company "iMagic Films Limited". I am Amiga fan since 1987,
foundation member of the Austrian Amiga Club Tirol
and still convinced that we'll be "Back For The Future" one day. What always
fascinated me about the Amiga is the community that sticked through thick and thin
with our "girlfriend". And just this community it is that gave me this idea.
We will soon film a commercial for an Austrian town. It is a low budget production which
is made possible only through the (mostly) free of charge working volunteers. Despite
the low budget, the 30 - 40 second spot will certainly have a high cinematic standard.
It is about a young woman who is catapulted from a dreary surroundings into a fascinating
dreamworld. About 150 extras, some fire-eaters, pyros and confetti bombs will provide
a proper spectacle. The spot will be shown in many cinemas.
Now we're looking for a piece of music which accompanies the dream journey of our
protagonist. GEMA-free music is out of question, but a real movie composer too expensive.
Here the community comes into play: there are many talented musicians in the Amiga
MOD- and demo-scene who could easily compose a soundtrack for us. Maybe an already
existing piece could be modified. We haven't agreed on any music style so far and
are thus open for everything.
Since nevertheless some conditions regarding length and structure of the piece should
be obeyed, I suggest that people who are interested in the project contact me directly
by e-mail.
As a special insider gag it's supposed to rain boing balls which the local firemen
will let fall down upon the extras from a net affixed to a ladder. For this, we need
a larger number of boing beachballs. And here again the community is asked: who can
do without his beachball before the summer vacation? Which dealers have maybe still
boing beachballs in stock and could put them shortly at our disposal? Maybe this
commercial could later be adapted as an AMIGA commercial.
My postal address is:

epic interactive: Amiga version of The Feeble Files?
In the last weeks we received quite a few e-mails and requests for an
Amiga version of our upcoming Mac conversion of the cartoon adventure The Feeble
Files. Since porting the game to the Macintosh is now completed we have
evaluated the possibility of an Amiga version of this great game. An
Amiga version would require an 060/PPC equipped Amiga with 32 MByte RAM and a
graphics board (4 MB). The game would come with complete English and German
speech versions on at least 2 CDs. You can find more information on this great
title in the projects section of our homepage.
Because the Amiga market has declined over the past 12 months and porting a
game to another platform is always also a financial risk we have decided to
start a preorder campaign for The Feeble Files Amiga: If we receive at least
400 preorders for this game we will bring The Feeble Files to the Amiga.
Porting the game from the Mac to the Amiga should not take more than 6
weeks, so that the game could theoretically reach Amiga users by early
September. Please send orders to order@epic-interactive.com. The game will
cost Euro 51,10 (plus shipping). If you wish to pay by credit card please
contact KDH Datentechnik.

Merlancia Industries
|
Dave Haynie: CTO of Merlancia Industries
Dave Haynie is the new CTO of Merlancia Industries. Dave Haynie might be well known by any
Amiga user, cause he's a kind of living legend. The following is a brief summary of his career so far:
Dave Haynie studied electronic engineering at the Carnegie Mellon University. After his studies four month
of employment at General Electric he was hired by Commodore in September 1983 to support their "TED" project,
which was started by Jack Tramiel. Later the C116 emerged from the "TED" project. While his times at Commodore
Haynie decisively worked on many projects, like several 8 bit machines (e.g. C128), the Amigas A500, A2000,
A2500, A3000, and A4000, Zorro-III, and he took part in the development of the AA and AAA chipsets, etc..
All in all he spent 11½ years at Commodore. 'Beside' of that he wrote about 50 articles for Amiga magazines
of those times; Amiga Sentry, .Info, Amiga Transactor, Amazing Computing, Amiga World, etc.. Furthermore he wrote
some developer tools and the FFS tool "DiskSalv".
Some of his 'stations' at Commodore:
- 1983: Commodore "TED" project, low-cost VIC-20 replacement.
- 1984: Commodore 128 project, the sequel to the venerable Commodore 64..
- 1986: Amiga 2000-B - slot-based Amiga.
He designed the gate-array (Buster) and a "coprocessor interface" for the CPU slot.
- 1988: Amiga 2620/2630: 68020/30 CPU cards for the Amiga 2000.
- 1989: Amiga 3000: First fully 32-bit Amiga architecture. As a co-creator of the system, he designed
the basic system architecture, the Zorro III expansion bus standard, and the "Buster" bus control
gate array which implemented Zorro III.
- 1991: Amiga 3000+": initially a product oriented design, this coupled the new Amiga "AA"
system/graphics chipset, an AT&T DSP3210 media coprocessor, 16-bit audio and modem CODECs, etc.
Management changes canceled the project, though some of its "DNA" lived on the Amiga 4000 and 1200.
He also developed basic modular "Acutiator" architecture for next-generation Amiga systems.
- 1992: Developed 32-bit SCSI controller for Amiga 4000, architecture for stand-alone DSP add-in cards,
and prototype of "AAA" motherboard, for Commodore's 4th generation, 64-bit Amiga graphics system.
System works, but by 1993, there's no money left to fix the four full-custom ASICs.
- 1994: Developed plug-in graphics subsystem for the Amiga. Commodore declares bankruptcy,
this is never built.
Haynie created a 2-hours video about the last day at Commodore and the goodbye-party, known by the name of
"The Deathbed Vigil and Other Tales of Digital Angst". This video for example is as a bonus content of the
"Amiga Forever" CD by Cloanto.
After his times at Commodore Dave Haynie worked for the Scala Inc. company for a short time, where about 80%
of the former Commodore engineers met, again. In November 1995 Amiga Technologies contracted him to consult for
the PowerAmiga project. He developed a concept, but due to Escom's financial problems this project got canceled.
After that, in May 1996, Haynie was contracted by the PIOS Computer AG, where he was in charge of the hardware.
Shortly before founded by Stefan Domeyer PIOS engaged also other former Amiga Int. or Commodore employees, among them
such clinking names like Dr. Peter Kittel and Andy Finkel. PIOS formed up to become a successful distributor of
PowerPC hardware and to make the PowerAmiga dream reality - the term of "PiosONE" was born.
Later from the PIOS Computer AG the Met@box AG emerged, a group of meanwhile
six companies with among other things Settop boxes as part of their product line. Me@box made application for
insolvency in May 2001.
More stations on Haynie's way:
- 1999 - Fleecy Moss started the KOSH project
to develop a new open source operating system for the Amiga - Dave Haynie is responsible for the hardware.
systems and audio.
- 1999 - The "Phoenix Platform Consortium" to define the Amiga's future was founded - beside of Dave Haynie
also Carl Sassenrath, RJ Mical, Wolf Dietrich (Phase 5), and Dan Dodge (QNX) were part of it.
- 2001 - In July Dave Haynie became CTO of Merlancia Industries.
He contributed information for the "The International Technology And. Computing Historical Association"
ITACHA, who collect 'artefacts' from technic and computer industry
and make these information available online. Unfortunately at this time there is only one page about the
"C65" available.
Also a really rich source for Amiga devotees are the
"The Dave Haynie Archives".
Last but not least it might be to mention that he became known and dear to many of the Amiga community
as a an unweary, all-time helpful co-worker/partner/friend. (ps) (Translation: mj)

CNet: Psion leaving handheld business
Psion, who were about to utilize the AmigaDE for future PDAs, will leave the
handheld business. The reason might be that Psion do not have enough financial

The share declined in price to it's all-time-low during the last weeks.
But Psion is working on the Netbook. It is obscure to what extent these changes will affect

Midi-Sequencer: BarsnPipes1
Alfred Faust wrote:
The first official version of the new development fork of the well known
and popular MIDI-sequencer BarsnPipes is now available in the
download section of my homepage.
New: The screenmode can now be changed via a requester. You can change
the resolution, the color depth (up to 256 colors), and the size of the
screen. Nearly every requester and menu is now ported to Gadtools.library
without losing the feeling of BarsnPipes.
This makes it possible to control big parts of the program
via the keyboard. The program now supports different languages.
Volunteers who want to translate the program can download a small
development package (CatTrans.lha)
that contains the catalogue-compiler CComp and a small how-to.

amiga-news.de headlines on your homepage
Within the scope of a PHP workshop the (German) Amiga-Magazin has recently dealt with
the possibility to include our news via a backend within their own PHP website. As the scripts were thoroughly tested since then we don't want to withhold this possibility from our users. Here you can see an example of the result.
Important: The preset time of six hours must not be reduced! Calls with shorter intervals will lead to IP blocking!
Please read in the following translation of the article from Amiga-Magazin
how you can include this service in your website:
Fresh news with PHP
Some news sites like amiga-news.de offer a backend service for up-to-date news.
To do this the site creators provide a special file on the server that e.g.
makes the last ten headlines available. These data can be included in the own
start page by using PHP so that you can always offer fresh news on your site.
In listing 3 you see a solution in PHP. You can include this script snip in the
own document and with every call are the current headlines of amiga-news.de
shown on your page. The PHP script pulls the data file and does a conversion into
HTML code. This is written into a temporary file and then included in the page.
Before doing the transfer the script verify the age of the present local data.
After reaching an appointed age the head file of amiga-news.de is read and the
list is created anew. Then the script overwrites the local data.
In the first part are declared some variables. These are the server address, the
port used by the script to transfer the data from amiga-news.de and the file the
data are written to. The following variables define some values for time and
date. In the example comes a list with names of months next that are later needed
for generating the HTML text.
Now the actual program begins. The script gets the headlines every six hours from amiga-news.de. A shorter period of time shouldn't be chosen because of performance reasons. Otherwise data would be pulled too often from the server
and unnecessarily increase the data transfer. If the data are too old the
script opens a connection via port Port 80 (HTTP) to amiga-news.de, transfers the
data and generates the HTML data by using these. If a connection to amiga-news.de
can't be established a corresponding error message will appear.
The script now read line by line the data -- the format of the amiga.news.de
headlines can be found in listing 4. If the script hits the string %%
(beginning of a message) it starts the evaluation of the data. The first line in
the headline is the title -- it is read into a corresponding variable
($headline). Then follows the link to the message -- it goes to $headlink. After
that follow date and time.
In our case only the date is of interest for us. That's why the back part of the
data is simply cut with the strtok command. The space between date and time is the
parting sign.
In the example we want always summarize the news of a day and place the date
before it. For that reason the program is testing the date -- if it's empty it
becomes the current date. With explode the year, month and day are parted into
single strings (parting sign is a hyphen -- see listing 4). Then is the string
for the output of the current date assembled. A non-breakable space is set at
the beginning so that the date is inserted a little bit and the tag for the bold
print (<B>) is set.
Now follow the day, the month and the year. In this step are also the
predefined month names inserted (see beginning of the listing). At the end there
has to be a </B> to deactivate the bold mode (bold print).
With the following if-clause the program tests whether the last read data
($current_date) is greater than the obtained one ($akdate). If this is the
case a new date line for HTML has to be generated, as the next message comes
from the previous day. Here is the advantage of the automatic type conversion
in PHP used. When comparing with »greater« PHP interpretes the string as number.
If $current_date is not greater than $akdate there's simply an empty string
allocated for $ak_date.
Hint: The variable $akdate has two functions in the script - it is used as memory for the date obtained by amiga-news.de and later on used for the date line in the HTML code.
When the date line is done the HTML code for the headline with link is being
generated. At the beginning is the date integrated. Is the headline from the
same day as in the line before this string is set to »empty« during the date
comparison in the upper part -- no date is inserted. After that the program
writes the generated HTML line into th local news file. This is done until all
lines of the headline file have been read. The local data file will then be
closed and the connection to the server of amiga-news.de will be closed.
In the last part of the script is the integration of the news file (that already
contains HTML code) into the website done. The server then sents this part to
the client.
The presented solutions can in principe already be integrated in the own
website. But it contains almost no text formatting. During the assembling of the
string for the date the text is set to bold in the example -- but you can here
also change the font size (font tag). You can built a table, too, and feed the
other data (time, rubric, editor) into the list.

Yes, thats right! The newly founded game developer Bonehead

kind of people working with us and don't think twice about sending in your
work to us. Please mail us soon!
Wer are a very small group of people who want to aim high on the
gaming market with our first project called "Z-Squad" which is a mix of
horror, 3d action, humour, beat 'em up, and strategy. We are early in
development, in fact that early that we need help to get it going and we
need GFX artists, coders, sketch artists, musicians, sound artists, and
maybe some more. We hope that the game will be released both to Amiga
and PC, cause we're seeing very serious in the matter and were not doing it
out of good will. In other words, if there's no money there's no game. We
want your work, but please don't mail us your 20MB demo before letting us

Graphic Adventure Engine: Inga Beta
Timo Kloss wrote:
The developer pack for the graphic adventure engine 'Inga' was
finished, more or less. Thus I'm now wanting beta testers.
Since the engine itself was not finished, yet, testing will focus
the tools and manual. The following shall be checked:
- Are the developer programs bug-free?
- Do these run on any machine?
- Are there suggestions for the tools?
- Is the manual complete and plain?
- Of course also the runability of the engine shall be tested.
If you are interested, please contact
Timo@inutilis.de and provide close information
about your configuration (hardware, software, versions, etc.)
The people elected will then receive the developer pack as digital version, only,
(that is to say without the printed manual, but with a text file) and are enabled to purchase
it at the half price on release. You will be allowed to go on using the digital version, anyway.
The developer pack runs on: AmigaOS V3.0+, CPU 68020+, graphics board with CyberGraphX.

on 06. July 2001. This utility comes in handy for bigger REBOL
programs existing of many files, but are to be distributed as one single
file.
A list of files gets assigned to this tool, being merged to one single and
compressed script. Beside of the program code binary files - like graphics
and sounds - are supported, too.

Emulation: CD32 emulation for Windows (update)
The first CD32 emulator for Windows, the CD32 Games Install
Kit, was just released on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. This
emulator works in connection with the famous WinUAE. Exactly
like in the Amiga version, patches are applied to every single
game. This gives a very good compatibility. Even digital CD audio
is already supported. However you will require a custom version
of the WinUAE which can be downloaded from my web page.
Currently the CD32 Games Install Kit for Windows is only available
for owners of the The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition CD-ROM
(download it in the protected update area!).
Update 08. July 2001:
Andreas Falkenhahn wrote in the German comments on this message:
I have had implemented some functions for CD audio handling in the custom version
of WinUAE. Indeed those only can be utilized by my sub-system Install2001 which runs on
the Amiga part, thus I don't know if the WinUAE team would like to have those functions
in every official release. I will inquire it, anyway. But like already told, without
Install2001, so without the Install Kit, those functions are just useless....

AmigaOS: AmigaSDL
The cross platform handling of games and multimedia applications is
often very difficult. There's a great number of libraries that are supposed to
close this gap. Among them SDL (Simple Directmedia Layer) seems to come out
as the probably most elegant and best supported project of this kind. Thanks to
the latest work of long standing Amiga developer Gabriele Greco there's now an
AmigaOS port of SDL available.
In his article (title link) John Chandler wrote on Suite101.com why SDL may
probably be the best solution in cross platform programming for the AmigaOS and
delivers some links.

The area in which he is is full of sharks, though ..., so: BE CAREFUL !!!
Collect as many treasues as possible and be aware of the sharks! Because of too
little feedback by the users the further development has ceased!
Amiga Arena "File Cutter" code!
Stefan Berge has made the code of File Cutter available to the Amiga Arena!
File Cutter serves to split files. You can e.g. split a file of 8MB (animation,
LHA archive) into several small files so that you can put this file with no
problem shared over several disks for further transport.
On another computer these files are put together to the original complete file
again.

Amiga users list updated

"The Amiga users list was again updated and is now available in version 11.00 on

The version change from 10.00 to 11.00 was made because I got erroneously an old
version of the list when taking over the AUL. All entries that were made in the
last Amiga users list by Stefan Martens are now contained in the new version, too.
From the next version on I'll update the AUL, therefore I'll verify the entries
and delete all non up-to-date entries without replacement!

have changed meanwhile."

Fonts: new Fontutility ports / dictionaries wanted
On my homepage (and soon on aminet, too) can two new ports of font utilities be
found that will be of use for the DTP interested and the font freaks.
"ttf2pt1" converts TrueType fonts into the Postscript format for use in
Pagestream, FinalWriter, Drawstudio, etc. and bases on the latest source codes.
"afm2pfm" converts between Postscript fontmetric files. Despite the archive's
name it's also possible to convert from PFM files to AFM files. Both programs
can be found in the "Font Utilties" area of my website, additionally there's a
PowerPC version for WarpOS available of "ttf2pt1".
Furthermore I'm looking for German language dictionary files of all kind (term
definitions, thesaurus, foreign word dictionary, ...) for my new project. In
contrary to the English there seems to be a real lack in the German speech area,
at least regarding free, documented formats. If anybody owns such files or some
Duden software out of the PC library series (or something similar) I'd be
thankful if he/she would contact me via email.

Universal-Filter V2.1 Update for PageStream 3.x/4.x
A new version 2.1 of the PageStream universal filter was released.
This free universal filter enables PageStream to load many graphic formats,

This new version fixes a v2.0 filter problem in loading pictures with colour palettes, which

Beside of the above fix some more small things were enhanced (e.g. new pnglib, lower stack
requirement). Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to finish the support for the PhotoShop
format. :-(

- _Pragma
- increased translation-limits.
- stdint.h
- New: Stack check as well as measurement of the stack size required.
- New: Documentation in PDF- and HTML format.

Music: Inutilis News about Moonlight
Timo Kloss wrote:
There are two new listening patterns of Moonlight. These are about extracts
from the songs "Fallen Angel 2" and "Night", which do NOT originate from
test recordings, but from the original CD versions! This music mainly was
created on an Amiga.
Since I don't have enough web-space, I only can offer two patterns at once.
To enable an overview regardless, the songs will be changed about every second
week.
inutilis.de now has got a new start page containing
an advertising banner, too. You might be right, if you think that inutilis will be
infested with advertising, now, but there will be Moonlight banners on many other
pages in return. So please, forgive me!

Apple puts Power Mac G4 Cube on hold
Apple Press information:
Feldkirchen, Germany, 4. July 2001: Apple will put on hold the production of the
Power Mac G4 Cube for an indefinitely time. Even though there is little
chance to re-introduce this unique computer by an all around renewed model,
there are currently not plans to do so.
"Owners of a Cube love this computer, but most of the customers decided in favour of
a Power Mac G4 mini-tower, instead", said Phil Schiller, vice president, worldwide product
marketing, of Apple.
The Power Mac G4 Cube, only 25% as big as a common PC, represented a completely new class of
computers: the power of a super-computer in a 8-inch-cube hanging inside of a glassy casing.

NEC Corp. uses Boingball
On the website of the NEC Corp. the BoinBall is used as a logo in a shockwave
flash (down right) for an announcement of the 'Permeo Technologies'.
If and how this has to do with Amiga, Inc. or if it is a violation of copyright
is not known to us, but we will clear up things.
Update: The Boingball is replaced by a logo that is similar to the Windows program
"GetRight".

New PC Emulator: First Beta-Version available
Alexander Fritsch wrote:
The first official beta version of a new pc-emulator is now available
for download at the title link. The program emulates an XT with 8086 CPU
and textmode. There are a 68000, 68020 and a PPC-version. Two disc drives
and a harddisk are currently support as imagefiles.
The emulator was tested with TurboC 2.0, Borland C++ 2.0,
Turbo Pascal 5.0, Norton Commander, LHA, ARJ and PKZIP. Topicaly
they are working on the graphic support, at least for CGA-modes.
I have to mention that this emulator is a complete new program and not
just a port of a program existing on another platform. This means that
a further development depends on my own motivation and the interest
of the users. Please feel free to report bugs and indications.
