Report about presentation at the Neuss show
More pictures of the presentation.
In a "conference room" (built out of some plastic walls which were put up, one desk, and an
insufficient amount of chairs) Bill McEwen was talking about Amiga's future for nearly 45 minutes. There
was a couple to listen to. So, let's rewind the dictaphones, and put together what was most imortant....
After the beamer could be woken up by the fifth trying, with plenty of drive and humor McEwen payed up (&qout;
Wellcome to the Amiga sauna...."). From the start he cleared the roumor that Amiga would be in delay of payment
for Gateway. Amiga owes Gateway no money. More than that, Amiga isn't in dept at all.
Further he introduced Dean Brown (DKB) as Director of Hardware once more. Mr. Brown would be responsible for
creating referenz hardware for interessted third-party developers to look about. A game handheld device would
allready be finished, which was in use by Amiga internally to impress interessted parties with the features
of the new operating environment. Based on a StrongARM with 250 Mips, a port for a Sony Memory Stick, and
a coloured display this device might figure well - and it was finished after one week of development!
About the new Vice President of Engineering McEwen showed himself mysteryous. This man might not get introduced
bevore the 10th of Juli, cause he still is employed by another company - "one that is large, and is in
trouble, you know...", and with this words a gesture of tearing something apart....
Further on information about the performance characteristics of the Java[TM] Virtual Machine - which is, acording
to Mr. McEwen 22 times faster in handling multimedia content than any other JVM does (!)
McEwen set clear too, that he wouldn't ask the Amiga Community for patience. The fact, that this show is
happening, that the audience is pressing into this (admittedly too small) room would argument enough that
Amiga users are patient - over 5 years, allready. But he continues to set clear, that he and his associates are
working for the same number of month to fulfill those high expectations.
As a first evidence of success Mr. McEwen took Amiga's SDK to the show, which - as he stated emphatic - still
would be very incomplete, and would target experienced developers in main. The end-users will still have to
wait for a seizable product for some time. E.g. there still is no sound support, streaming support or 3D graphics support
included with the SDK, which will follow later (e.g. 3D support after about 3 month).
In the case of the critical theme of marketing McEwen admited, he still didn't employe a VP of Marketing -
he thinks first to develope a product that would worth a respective marketing would be more important,
than making generous announcements which can't get fulfilled with the best Amiga tradition.
Next he talked about the original plans to provide a deverloper's box by combining hard and software together.
Because of the Amiga user's negative replies to this, they made up their minds - which required a lot of
changes an additional programs (e.g. installer scripts). Now the software of the SDK was released; the HW/SW
developer's box would follow after about 2 weeks.
Amiga would target "Ubiquity in Computing": mobile phones, PDAs, multimedia processor servers,
a new desktop, a new game console, all of that with the same operating environment - something like that
would never have been there.
Applications with this would be fully scalable. After a developer has decided were to put his applications,
this one application could climb up the ",Food Chain" as high as it was wanted to. So, a game coded for
a handheld would even run on a multiprocessor server. But on the other hand an application writen for a server wouldn't
run on a mobile phone - or better to say - only very, very slow....
Processors allready supported by the operating environment would be PPC, M.core, X68, StrongARM, ARM, Sh/3,4,5, MIPS
and a number of other CPUs, which they can't name (at this time), cause they are under NDAs with the
manufacturers.
At the end Bill was talking about the JavaOne, a show that happend in San Francisco last week, and at which the
Tao Group had a booth. The same demonstration shown here at the Amiga show there was running on a Sega DreamCast,
on set-top-boxes, a StrongARM notebook, and a X86 computer. Only this was enough to magnetise the audience, and then
they would have taken out a mobile phone on which a Pole Position clone could run, in spite of the low performance
of 3,5 Mips. This would have been the same mobile phone which Scott McNeilly (Sun) had with him when he entered the stage
at the CES in January, &qout;I've tolled you that once we will have Java[TM] running on such a device, once a day" - just,
that it wasn't Sun's Java[TM] Virtual Machine running on that mobile phone....
And Linux wouldn't be the only operating system that would come into question as a host for the new Amiga. Other hosts
would be Windows, WindowsNT, Linux, WindowsCE, QNX, and OS/9 (a market leading OS from Microware for set-top boxes).
Host support for iTron, Epoc, VxWorks, and PalmOS would be in development, and close to be finished.
The cooperation between the Tao Group and Amiga Mr. McEwen illuminated in quite another way. It wasn't necessary that
they would use only Tao's products. In fact they would have access to 50 developers at the Tao Group to create things
needed by Amga.
Furthermore the BOOPSI libraries were portetd. This porting would be allready finished. They would now do testings and
optimizations. The new scripting language (SHEEP) would also be finished during the next month - the rights for ARexx
belong to a third-party manufacturer, and because of that they would develope another language.
The catchword renderware was spoken, too. The new operating environment would be prepared even for this.
.
And then Bill McEwen had a very special goody to offer: Once the single parts of the operating environment will be put together
there will be the AmigaOne - a new multimedia desktop, developed and designed by Amiga, even if manufactured by
thir-party manufacturers. McEwen didn't want to say more about that at that early stage, the way to go would still be
very long.
Since it is a few minutes after midnight, and tomorrow there will be another day of the show waiting I'll finish
for now. This was only the first half of the presentation. I'll report about the other half tomorrow....
...part two
McEwen continued on OEMs and ISVs - the latter being companies willing
to support Amiga, but unable to "take their eyes off" what they are
doing for a living right now. Eleven such ISVs had given their source
code to Amiga - free of charge, free to port.
Of course, the well-known partners of the Tao-Group were mentioned:
Sun, Sony, Motorola, JVC and others. McEwen recommended reading the
press release from the Tao site
(about the certification of their Java machine) - Amiga is in dealings
with all those companies mentioned.
Then, McEwen showed pictures of his former office, and of the new "Amiga
World Headquarter". Five other companies were located there, building
high-end electronics for other companies for demonstratiuon purposes -
with Amiga being able to use their equipment for free.
Then, Bill McEwen started demonstrating the new OS, hosted under Red Hat
Linux on a notebook. He stressed that there was no hardware acceleration
involved (which, as said before, will follow in August). It is difficult
to put into words, but we saw lightning-fast Java demos, some 2D games,
the well-known Boing demo, some free moving Boing balls you could grab
and shoot inot the air with the mouse, a unicode browser, 2D filters,
the transparent "Clock" window (where you could grab a ball through
the clock - everything running on top of Linux, without any flicker or
slow-down. Well, not true, I saw it flickering: when McEwen was
starting the OS a second time, in a different window, the first one froze
for a split-second, to continue as fast and fluently as before, while
McEwen started the same number of demos again in the second window.
The demo was very impressive given the early stage of development, the
pictures only grab a small portion of it.
McEwen was unable to elaborate on further plans, but recommended an article
in Byte magazine from 1994, linked from the Amiga homepage; some of these
things would redefine Distributed Computing completely.
Towards the end, McEwen answered some questions. I recorded the whole
presentation on tape, but some questions couldn't be heard over the
background noise, and some answers made no sense without the questions.
I transscribed what I could make sense of, and left out one or two
sentences I could not make sense of. As soon as I get my hands on the
right adapter cable, I will make a MP3 recording of the tape (which was
recorded with permission from Mr. McEwen).
F: What about the classic OS?
McEwen: We are using the pieces whereever it makes sense.
F: Will there be an emulation for it?
McEwen: We already have an emulator working. Testing is already done, we
are now optimizing it so it runs very very fast. You guys know Brian King? You
know where he works? He is a good man, Brian. He's helping us. So we're working to speed
it up right now, it's a little slow. So we are in the process of optimizing it.
McEwen: Before somebody asks, you're asking if I'm gonna porting it to PPC. No.
I'll tell you why. No matter who I've spoken with, R.J. Mical, Carl Sassenrath, Alan
Havemose, everyone of them has looked at this in the past. It's an 18-month to 24-month
process, and all of them agree it will only be 80% complete. Because I'd had to
re-engineer the AGA chipset, I'd have to re-engineer Agnus, Denise, all those things
are tied directly to the OS. In fact the hardest thing for Havemose in building the 3.1 were
all those bugs that were in those chips they have to account for. So right now it would be
too costly for us to make the moves necessary to capitalize on the market, we need to move forward.
It doesn't help me to be everywhere. It doesn't help me to build a scaleable operating system,
which is what we need to be to win.
Making just another system on a chip is not enough. We need to be able to go to Sony, go
to Panasonic, go to all those guys and say "pick your chip".
F: (Schlecht zu verstehen, Frage über die Hardware-Anforderungen des SDK, ob
es ein spezieller Prozessor sein muß.)
McEwen: The SDK, if you are able to run Red Hat Linux you should be fine.
We tested it on Red Hat and Corel. So you should be absolutely fine on that.
F: Will it also run on the Amiga?
McEwen: Not right now, no. We don't have anything on the 68000. We are hoping
to work with our other friends so when you got PPC, which we know Linux can run on
there, we can run on top of that. And we will be able to run native, on those, on the PPC
cards. That's one of our biggest problems right now, you've got commitments from
people delivering, and nothing is happening.
F: Do you plan to change the design of the interface?
McEwen: It is designed with the flexibility similar to today so you can make
it the way you want. There will be defaults, so an Amiga users might want to have
Workbench as their default, but for other consumers, they might to want it different.
You will have defaults with the flexibility to change it the way you want.
F: (nicht zu verstehen)
McEwen: If you are running Linux on a PPC card within an Amiga, alright? We
have not tested it yet, however the two manufacturers have tested it and said it can
run.
F: (nicht zu verstehen)
McEwen: Not with the first build, no. Part of it is a tools issue, the tools
needed to utilize it. We have two companies right now in the process of making an
IDE specifically for us, so that won't be required in the future. Everything is not
in here (SDK), we know that, and there are certaily things to change; however, we felt
it important enough to get people to understand writing for VP and some changes.
Chris Hinsley, who created this, as you know, is an Amiga gaming guy; and I think
you will find, as most have found as they began to play with this, it's extremly
similar, in many ways as we write today. So it will be a very wuick curve, but
there will be a curve. So we want it to get into peoples hands first, so they
can begin working with it, utilize it, begin writing some applications, you know.
Get familiar, so when we add the other components to it, you will be able to get
moving much quicker.
F: (schlecht zu verstehen, eine weitere Frage zur Kompatibilität mit
alten Anwendungen)
McEwen: In fact we already have an emulator that is working. It's not
in this build, since we are in optimization, yes. In fact we're also looking
into a hardware solution to do it.
F: Everything on the SDK is usable on an Amiga PPC?
McEwen: Nonono. What's on here is designed right now to work with
Red Hat on an x86 platform or on Corel, ok? When it's completed, and you have an
executive OS running, everything is fine, it can run. Again, we haven't
tested it yet, according to third parties it can run on a PowerPC accelerator
within an Amiga, as long as Linux is there. We haven't tested it yet, so I'm
not telling you yes it can. We want to test it first. We've got two machines
in the house we are doing it on.
F: (schlecht zu verstehen, eine Frage über die zu erwartende Verfügbarkeit
von Software für das neue System)
McEwen: We have 131 applications already dedicated.
F: Also games?
McEwen: Most of them are games. There is a very large Indian company who does a
lot of interactive games [...] they already commited to us and will be moving all
their games over to Amiga. They have 63 games themselves, all of them for multiuser
interactive gaming over the net.
F: (nicht zu verstehen)
McEwen: Oh, oh, the multiple screens? Yeah, that's fine. What you see
today from a visual perspective you still can get, ok? All the multiple layers,
etcetera, that's still here, that's ok. That's what you were asking, right?
Thank you!
There were presentations before this one. The first, at eleven, was missed
because I was still on my way to Neuss. The second one was so crowded I couldn't
get inside, but I managed to record some parts of his speech, enough to catch
up the fact that SUN will probably advertise the Amiga JDK to their
user base.

This time I haven't put the sources into the main archive so that people
who have no interest in the sources have to download only about 500,000 bytes.
The sourcecodes can be found on my homepage, however.

Fair: Rolf Tingler brushes for you :-)
Maybe you already noticed by studying the hallmap
that airbrush booth besides the*AC#/amiga-news.de booth. We have convinced Rolf Tingler of the
Airbrush Paradise to show his airbrushing skills at a fair again after a long
time.
Rolf is known to many Amiga-users by his former appearences at fairs and he was the one who brought the
Amiga-design to the mobile phone housings.
At the fiar in Neuss he will, if you like, decorate your mouse with a nice airbrushed picture. The best you take your
Amiga mouse with you to the show for that. Also body tattoos, which will
disappear by itself after a while, are planned. The prices for that will be about DM 10,-.
At the fair you can take a close look at airbrushing and inform yourself about airbrushing, what airbrushing is,
and what you will need to do it yourself, how it is done, about what you have to take care for and what you better don't do.

Exhibition Flyer now in - Inexpensive travel arrangements
The Flyer for the Neuss exhibition is now in. The article concerning the
inexpensive travel arrangements especially caught our eye.
For 7 Marks to the Exhibition and back
As a train rider you have the least expensive option to come to the World of

X-Surf Samba Install CD is done
Just in time for the convention the Samba-Install CD for the X-Surf
ethernet card is finished. On the Amiga side everything is automatic, so
there is no need to deal with complicated configuration files. A few clicks
and you can access harddrives and printers in the network. For Amiga-Freaks
that don`t care for Samba, NetFS will also be automatically installed. No
editing of configuration files. The access performance of amiga-amiga is a bit
higher. For the PC there isn`t a simple method of automation, but a HTML
installation guide includes screenshots of all the important settings.
The CD will be given to all X-Surf customers for free that are able to show
the original bill of sale. Those that aren`t able to be in Neuss will have
to order it from thier retailer. There are not any plans to distribute the
CD without a customer order. Since the CD only contains 5.5 MB data, it will
most probably be available on the internet after the convention. However it
will be a while, since everything is in German and many of the users would
not be able to benefit from it.

VirusHelp Denmark: TCP trojan on the run
The coder of "SAFE" Zbigniew `Zeeball` Trzcionkowski has informed VirusHelp
Denmark that some new TCP-trojans are on the run:
Organization: Virus Help Denmark
From: "Jan Andersen" vht-dk@post4.tele.dk
Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2000 08:29:40 +0200
Subject: [vht-dk] TCP Trojan's on the wild
Hi All....
Today we recived information from Zbigniew `Zeeball` Trzcionkowski the
programmer of "SAFE", that there is some new TCP trojan on the loose.
Please read the text that Zbigniew wrote:
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
TCP:4097 remote shell
and
LIBS:rexxfifo.library size: 1136
If You have such then please:
- delete this fake library
- repalce fake LoadWB with the original one
- reboot
The fake LoadWB don`t have $VER string, but to confuse user it have
size and parts of file from the original LoadWB v38.9.
The trojan is fake LoadWB that decrypts and executes rexxfifo.library
which hides original LoadWB also remote shell is opened - TCP:4097.
Installer: (faked YAM?)
Please wait to xvs.library will be updated to remove this in easy way.
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
TCP:2421 remote shell
...and maybe several infected files.
Yes. There is another link-virus. The memory patch is detected as
STD Vaginitis #1 and removed correctly by xvs.library.
The infected files aren`t.
The virus is changed only little bit and is almost same as Fungus
or Vaginitis. Even static crypt key ($DEAD) is same.
Installer: jizzer size: 15368
attacks C:mount as first (adds 700 bytes with virus)
Wait for xvs.library to be updated. To see infected files
look into Safe/VaginitisClone dir of this Safe release!
I wasn`t able to spread this virus to testfiles,
so maybe this is only used to infect c:mount,
so after analyzes of disassembly i`ll be able to say why.
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
TCP: 2001 remote shell
and
fake process called `SetPatch`
and
LIBSi:rexxfunc.library size: 1136
and
L:wb.handler size: 4716
If You have such then please:
- delete those fake library and fake handler,
- replace LoadWB with the original one
- reboot
The fake LoadWB looks like original one, but it is fake.
Installer: `miamispoof` size: 8468
(The file is StoneCracked and then modified to
prevent decrunching)
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
So to be sure please check Your system for:
LIBS:rexxfunc.library size: 1136
LIBS:rexxfifo.library size: 1136
L:wb.handler size: 4716
C:mount (is bigger)
...and wait for new xvs.library from Alex van Niel.
This text is public domain :-)
;---------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanx to Paul for sending the files and to Zbigniew for the text.
The warning from VHT-DK is atthaced to this email, please spread
the warning as much as you can...... ( Thanx).....
Kind Regards.....

The room plan is available as A4 graphic (about 270

Visitors of the World of Alternatives that don't know yet how to get there find
detailed route informations (German) here. There are routes for people traveling
by car, train and plane. Even detailed bus connections are available.
On the Milan side, there are the good news that the TV and the DSP card can be presented,
the 100Mbit network is working, and the new case designs have arrived in time for the show.

World Launch of the NG AMIGA SDK on the show in Neuss
Bill McEwen confirmed it in his latest e-mail: AMIGA will present the new SDK (Software
Development Kit) for the NG AMIGAs for the first time worldwide on the show in Neuss
coming up next weekend. Bill himself intends to bring the SDK packs for the local
exhibitors. The expected price will be about 250,- DM.
As scheduled, Bill will present the new system in a conference room, report about
AMIGA's plans for the future, and answer user questions.
Bill only briefly attending on Sunday:
Since Bill has a very important interview with the New York Times on Sunday, he had
to cut back his attending to the show to Saturday. If he will be present at all on
Sunday, it will be only briefly. People focussing on the presentations should change
plans to arrive on Saturday. The SDK will of course be available on Sundays, too.

Aside from several fixes, there are now A2410 and RainbowIII drivers included. Also there
is now an option to activate 56 kHz audio directly on CyberGraphX screens. For people
who want to overclock their BCPPV/CVPPC to get some more performance from their card, there
are now the according options too (requiring to actively cool your Permedia2 however). More

TWF News.
1. General Update
2. Explorer 2260 Update.
3. Maim & Mangle Update.
4. Next News Update
~~~~~~
1. General Update
May could have been better. There was numerous problems with compiler bugs
driving both chris and massi mad. The problems were traced to bugs in the
StormC V3 compiler which wasted a lot of their time chasing code bugs that
didn't exist. On top of that Rob had a harddrive failure which didn't lose
much work but the replacement drive refused to format and took over a week
to get his A4000 working again with the new drive.
2. Explorer 2260 Update.
News this month:
- Continuted working on MiniGL engine and object editor. Started
modifying MiniGL texture code to support more formats and
automatic card-friendly format conversion.
- Fixed some problems with parts of the interface code, began
an abstraction layer to make interface component handling
code easier to port to Linux.
- Extended object editor loading system to support plugin-style
load libraries.
3. Maim & Mangle Update.
News this month:
- There has been far too many problems with bugs in StormC V3. A lot of
development time has been lost due to these compiler problems. We are
switching development over to the GCC compiler (we may use StormC V4
when it is released if the bugs we've experienced have been fixed).
- The game engine is now running under miniGL, on both 060 and PPC.
- Work has started on conversion of our editor tools to use miniGL.
These should be ready within 2-3 weeks.
4. Next News Update
1st July 2000
All the best,
Winner(s) Graphical Artists competition revealed
1ST JUNE 2000--OOSTERHOUT(NB)-NL--C&C·Logo and Design today announced the winner(s) of the Graphical Artist competition.
It took more time than we eventually had in mind, but we have picked a winner from out of more
than 60+ contestors all over the World. The winner has already received word from us by email
and will receive his work printed and framed by the end of next week, together with a contract
for future partnership.
Originally one person would be all we needed, but as seen from all the artwork we have received,
it seems that most people are very good at a specific part of art, but we needed someone more
versatile. That is why we will contact a few more people in the next week, to ask if they would
like to work for us whenever there's need for their specific artwork (paid of course).
New issue of Amiga World released, new executive update from McEwen
Yesterday a new issue of AMIGAs online magazine Amiga World has been released, containing especially numerous informations for AmigaNG developers. It is available in HTML format, a PDF version will follow soon.
A new Executive Update by AMIGA CEO Bill McEwen:
Amiga is Back, and will change computing forever, again.
Amiga, the creators of Multi-Media computing, have announced the release of their developer kit for Amiga, Linux, and Java developers.
June 3, 2000, Snoqualmie, WA - Amiga announces the release of the Amiga Software Developers Kit, the first new product to introduce the next generation Amiga platform.
The Amiga Software Developers Kit provides the initial tools and examples for developers to create exciting multi-media content for multiple devices and computing environments. The unique strength of the New Amiga comes from the partnership with the Tao Group in Reading England providing a foundation where developers are able to take advantage of a ubiquitous computing environment.
In 1984 Amiga established what is know today as multi-media. As a result of this, Amiga systems are used around the world by leading film studios, animators, and in mission critical applications. Using this as the foundation, the Amiga is moving forward by creating multi-media for numerous devices and computing environments in the home, in the office and beyond.
The Amiga OS is capable of being self-hosted, and sitting on top of other operating systems. A single application is capable of running on X86, Power PC, M.core, ARM, StrongArm, MIPs, SH3/4, and others. In a hosted environment the new Amiga runs on versions of Linux, Windows 95,98/NT, Windows CE, OS/9, QNX4, and others to be announced.
The new OS also embraces the Java language in a new, powerful and compliant way. The intent Java Technology Edition from Tao is world renowned for its speed and compact execution of Java applications. With the new environment, developers will be able to take advantage of both Java, and portable assembler coding.
"Today we take the first step towards the future," said Bill McEwen, President/CEO of Amiga, Inc. "The new Amiga SDK provides an environment where the best developers in the world can build exciting applications, that can transcend hardware limitations. Today Amiga developers can be joined by Linux and Java developers in an environment that provides the foundation for the delivery of future content."
"Tao has been talking for some time now about our developments to create Digital Heaven(TM) and we see Amiga and its community as a fundamental part of the new order that can make it happen and take an industry lead. With the sheer tenacity and the many qualities of McEwen and his Amiga team, the world is going to see Amiga as a Premier Brand for connected digital appliances," said Francis Charig Chairman of the Tao-Group.
For the developer, the new SDK creates a single environment that is scalable from handheld devices, such as cell phones upwards New versions of the kit later in the year will introduce many new media features. Both the current and future versions will enable compact, high performance and robust media solutions to be used across a broad range of devices using identical binaries..
The New Amiga SDK is available through local retailers for $99.00, and from the Amiga web site, Amazon.com and other sources available soon. A version via a Japanese distributor will be announced shortly.
About Amiga:
Amiga Incorporated is dedicated to creating a multi-media operating environment, enabling developers and users to experience a new level of enjoyment.
As it was in the early 80’s, Amiga is ready to introduce the next level of computing.
Linux-APUS kernel for "Mac on Linux" PPC Emulator available
At the title link, the kernel (vmlinux_mol.lha) is available for download.
The kernel is required for executing the runtime patches for the PPC emulator
MOL "Mac on Linux". In this kernel version 2.2.10 there is currently only
support for the IDE interface compiled in. More informations about the kernel
modules are available in the ".config" file in the packet vmlinux_mol.lha.
Kernel with SCSI drivers and IDE+SCSI drivers will follow within the next few days. Since
I lacked the tile to recompile and reconfigure the PPC emulator, I would very much
welcome if somebody would send me a binary package and a configuration file, if
possible with a short manual in German. Moreover I would offer my cooperation
with other developers. Questions, hints or criticism can be send to my mail address
APC&TCP releases Digital Make Up
On the Amiga show in Neuss, APC&TCP will release another CD-ROM. More information can
be gathered from our homepage or directly from us. After the show, this CD-ROM will be
distributed like all our products:
Welcome to your workbench's wardrobe. The new "Digital Make-Up" CD is an
add-on CD with a collection of tools and utilities for customizing and making up your
Amiga operating system, sorted by subject. This does not only encompass powerful tools
really bringing AmigaOS up to speed and making everyday work easier - we also thought of
graphics material for the grey-in-grey workbench. Additionally, there is software for
implementing speech output. Of course accompaining speech and sound samples in several
formats aren't missing either. Many datatypes, updated libraries, modern fonts, new
commands for the C directory and numerous other system extensions will bring any Amiga
system on the right course. New great screensavers and many icon sets for the NewIcon
system, or real new GlowIcons will make your Workbench look up-to-date. Some software
never released before can be found on this CD-ROM. The new AmigaOS version 3.5 got it's
own drawer, where tools for the latest version can be found. A double-click on "Quickstart"
and you are right in the middle of it - the "Digital Make-Up CD"!
The "Digital Make-Up CD" is optimized for AmigaOS version 3.0 to 3.5. The major part
of the software on this CD-ROM can be started directly. Requirements: Amiga with 68020
CPU, 2 MByte ChipRAM, hard drive, CD-ROM drive, AmigaOS 2.05+.
Recommended: Amiga with 68040 CPU + PPC, 2 MByte ChipRAM, 4 MByte FastRAM, hard drive,
CD-ROM drive, AGA or graphics card, sound card, AmigaOS version 3.5.
News from Alive Mediasoft
We too have received the eMails mentioned on ANN. Find above a direct link to the Alive
Mediasoft's answer at ANN so that we don't repeat them here and you can direcly participate
in the discussion on the theme.
03 June 2000, supplement:
Bothered Steven Flowers from Alive Mediasoft started his eMail with the
words, "first of all I'm pretty pissed off", and wordy he explained why
Goal 2000 wouldn't be just a cracked version of Goal. There were many
new features and possiblities comming with Goal 2000 not implemented in
Goal,
and that cracked version was taken with the developer's consent, cause
there wasn't any other version available at that time.
Might be that such procedures are being used with a release, but in
my opinion this should be avoided as far as is possible, even though.
That's debatable. But I actually recieved eMails from ppl complaining
about AM again and again during the last few month, e.g. developers who
either didn't get payed or even nobody asked them, if their software may
be distributed. In the past I allways replyed on those ppl, they should
set their problems clear direct with AM, cause I presumed them to be
unsuccessful particular cases. Goal just overflowed the barrel, and put
patience at an end. (ps)
ZDNet: CeBIT Home cancelled
"This year there will be no CeBIT Home. This was confirmed to ZDNet by the Deutsche Messe AG on Thursday.
The press spokesperson of the Deutsche Messe, Eberhard Roloff, said: "The quality aspect is unreasonable
for those exhibitors who stayed with us." More details (German) at the title link.
Heise: CeBIT Home 2000 cancelled
The Computer and Multimedia Show CeBIT Home, planned for this late summer in Leipzig, has been cancelled.
The Deutsche Messe AG in Hannover has decided to call the show off due to the bad exhibitor numbers. The
whole concept of a multimedia show addressing the private user is to be rethought. Only a few days
before, the Messe AG has stated that they wanted to stick with the show concept this year, too.
It would have been the third CeBIT Home. Because of the World Exposition Expo 2000 in Hannover, Leipzig
was chosen as alternative. Several well-known exhibitors were missing two years ago already. Back then,
586 exhibitors were attending. The number of visitors declined from 200,000 to about 180,000."
Executive Update
Executive Update May 30,2000
Friends:
Many people have been writing to me recently, reminding me that there has been very little activity as far as site updates go. While this is not intended as the official Executive Update, I just want to make sure everyone knew that there has, in fact, been a great deal of activity going on at Amiga since the Amiga 2k show in Saint Louis a few months ago. As usual, there are things that we aren't ready to discuss, but never mistake our silence for being "asleep".
Officially you can watch the Amiga.com site for the new Executive Update, new developer and application information, as well as several other updates which will be posted on June 3rd, 2000.
In the next Update, you can expect to see much more information and details about our immediate plans than this message will have. While we could have waited another week or so to post the next Update, I thought the community needed to hear from us, to let you know what we can at the moment, and to ask you to be patient, just a little bit longer.
One critical area that needs to be addressed right now today is the Amiga name, trademarks, logos, and intellectual properties. Many of you have sent me notes asking us to take action against those who are making illegal copies of our software, using our name without permission, and the distributing our intellectual property without our knowledge and consent.
While this might seem negative for many, it is imperative that Amiga properly and legally defend our trademarks and intellectual property. To be blunt and to the point, if you are using the Amiga name, Amiga logos, or distributing our intellectual property without a license, you must cease and desist these actions immediately. Amiga Incorporated owns the aforementioned items and all rights contained therein.
We understand that many of you have worked very hard to maintain a community, the spirit, and all we know Amiga as today. Unfortunately, there are many people, sites, and even companies out there who are using the Amiga name in a detrimental fashion, and in negative ways. Some have even sought to use the Amiga name to further their own goals and products. Because of this and because international trademark laws mandate it, we must make sure that anyone using our name, logos, or trademarks in any fashion is properly licensed by us.
Okay, now that we've said that, here's the Amiga SDK (Software Developers' Kit)!
On April 1st, 2000, at the Amiga 2k show, Amiga Inc. announced the developer box and our partnership with the TAO group in England. To be quite honest, the number of developers who approached us at the show and shortly thereafter wanting to purchase the Software Development Kit (SDK) separately from the hardware to run on your own machines took us completely by surprise.
Well, we listened and in only a few days will be releasing to manufacture the new Amiga SDK.
More information will be on the site the weekend of June 3rd.
Please note that the SDK will sell for $99 U.S.. The SDK will be available from your Amiga retailer, and other sources soon-to-be announced.
Things really are happening at Amiga, there are new applications, new employees, new partnerships, and new products.
The year 2000 truly is going to be a very exciting time. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the coming months at the different trade shows, different events, by phone, by fax, and by e-mail. I can promise you that with the release of the SDK you'll begin to see Amiga get much more aggressive and move much faster towards the future.
Thank you again for your continued support, and make sure to check the Amiga.com site the weekend of June 3rd.
Sincerely,
Bill McEwen, and the rest of the Amiga team.
Phase 5 is sending cards back
In several e-mails we recieved, and in several forums it can be read that Gerald Carda is obviously
So there seems to be hope that customers will get their cards back, some unrepaired, but better
than nothing.
Here is the address again customers should write to to get their cards back:
Wolf Dietrich und Gerald Carda phase5 digital products In der Au 27 D-61440 Oberursel Germany
You should state when you did send in your card, the RMA number is also important. Set an apropriate
deadline for recieving the hardware. (ps)
KDH stops distributing Alive Mediasoft products
Starting immediately, KDH Datentechnik stops distributing Amiga games published and distributed
by the English company Alive Mediasoft. We wrote to the company demanding clarification why the
CD Goal2000 only includes the old Goal game (with cracker intro). Moreover we requested proof that
a license is available for all published games. If the situation can be solved positively, we will
resume distribution.
Heise: New PowerPCs expected this summer
«According to reports of the US press, IBM wants to release a new family of
PowerPC processors that do not only offer higher clockrates (up to 700 MHz), but
especially have an integrated L2 cache of 256 KByte. Because of their reasonable
power usage, the in 0,18-µm copper technique manufactured G3 processors
address primarily the notebook market.»
Goal2000! purchase risks, Alive-Mediasoft maintains silence
Tom Crecelius writes in ANF:
I have purchased the game Goal2000! from Alive-Mediasoft some weeks ago. After
receiving the CD, I noticed an error on the CD. Not Goal2000! is on the CD, but
only Goal!. After decrunching the "Goal2000-1.DMS" archive to disk and booting it
up, an intro appears with the contents: "Goal! - The Championchip League. Broken
by Q.U.A.R.T.E.X in 1993"!!
When the menu appears, it is entirely obvious that this is Goal! and not Goal2000!.
Despite multiple attempts to get into touch with Alive-Mediasoft via mail and
despite former (before I had payed) good mail contact I couldn't get a reply
from Alive-Mediasoft up to this day. Maybe they will now reply...
So be careful if you are interested in "Goal2000!".
AROS Status update
From aros-announce-admin@lists.hepe.com
Date Thu, 25 May 2000 16:07:03 +0200
Subject [AROS-Announce] Status update
Hello,
There was no status update for more than 6 weeks (which is too much).
I'll do better in the future :-) In the last few days, our WWW counter
silently skipped 33.333 hits.
The Sowatec AG has decided to give AROS a chance. Several people who
applied for the job to work on AROS have been contacted to arrange for
job interviews. That means for me that I will finally be able to meet
some of the people I worked with for the last five years ;-) It doesn't
mean that there will be an AROS development team in Switzerland, though.
So don't hope for too much, yet :-)
Unfortunately, the date for the World of Alternatives is very unlucky
for me; I'll return from my holidays on Saturday and therefore, I'll
not be able to attend :-( Since the World of Amiga in Cologne seems
to be a dead event this year (Who's left to attend ? Who is willing
to attend ??) I'll try to make it the London Amiga show or whatever
is held this or early next year. Sorry if you did expect me to show
up :-)
On a more happy news, BGUI has been handed over to us and integrated
into AROS (you can download the contrib sources for your copy). Manuel
Lemus promised me that it compiles on Amiga but, unfortunately, it
doesn't compile on AROS, yet (the old lack-of-manpower problem). There
should be no major problems, though and porting has started. I just
can't say when it will be finished. Anyone wanting to work on BGUI
only (and not on AROS) should still apply for a CVS account to
synchronise his work with ours.
Also, Steve Crietzman of the Open Amiga Foundation seems to be pretty
far with finding out which legal obstacles could hurt AROS/Lite. His
effort is currently blocked by the effort of the Sowatec AG to found
an AROS development team (we'll have to sort our legal obstacles first).
As usual, the legal dept. drains all the energies ;-)
On the AROS side, work is still progressing, maybe even at a faster
pace than usual ;-) The AROS Native/i386 flavour is currently broken
(the HIDD system has been greatly enhanced and Michael Schulz currently
cannot take care of it) but AROS Linux/i386 works quite fine. Nils
has committed a couple of patches which greatly enhance the speed of
the graphics output (it's now *much* faster then on the WoA in Cologne
last year in November). Right now, bugs in the build system and exec
are hunted by various AROS developers and I hope to see lots of progress
in that area when I return from my holidays.
As for the survey which I started months ago, I hope I can summarize
them after the holidays :-)
Things never turn out what you expect them,
--
- MPGUI looks for "akmp" or "PPCakmp" also in C: if they are not found (locked) in PROGDIR:.
As some might already know, Amiga Inc. has contacted me (and Cloanto) asking to remove
Big (good) Fusion PPC News!
On the Microcode Solutions homepage there are some news on Fusion PPC:
- Another WOS problem was fixed
- Fusion PPC is now top priority (will be finished shortly!)
- To get more developer resources and funds (and since the number of pre-orders
didn't meet expectations), MS has licensed their PC MAC-68040 emulation technology
to Emulators Inc.
- The Fusion PPC version will no longer require a MAC ROM! It will represent a
Boing Bag 2 News
Martin Steigerwald wrote to the AmigaOS 3.5 ML: "About news to Boing Bag 2 (second update
to AmigaOS 3.5), I can only tell you that it is under development. There are some bugs
left to fix. It is to be released as soon as possible, but at first we have to fix the
known bugs so we cannot give a release date yet."
WARNING: DiskCopy v44 does not work correctly with partitions beyond 4 GB, and can even
lead to data loss. It is as of now untested if Format v44 can lead to problems. A certain
caution is adviced. Boing Bag 2 will contain fixed versions.
Intermediate status report / new web and e-mail addresses
The fact that I have not yet released new updates for ArtecScan, FMdriver, CGXBlanker,
PPCjpeg etc. does not mean I have cancelled the projects! On the contrary: many new
improvements are already planned, some even already implemented - I am lacking the time
necessary for completing them. The reason: Right now I have numerous other (Amiga related)
tasks to tend to.
Nevertheless there are some changes: My homepage is now available at the new domain
www.qdev.de. Starting immediately, my new e-mail
address is also valid: stefan.robl@qdev.de.
The old addresses will remain valid parallely for a long time, however I suggest adjusting
the bookmarks / address books now.
As a small gimmick, my homepage has another (hardware) photography - of a Zorro II autoconfig
board for the A500, which I built/developed years ago. There will be news about this within
the year. More about it later... :)
xpkGZIP for WarpOS
Since the asyncio.library has been ported to WarpOS, I ported the GZIP module for Xpk to WarpOS,
which performed very well even under 68k.
It offers fantastic compression and decompression speeds, and currently is the best and fastest
Xpk packer for the Amiga. Due to the extremly good performance, it is the perfect module of choice
for the Xpk filesystem. Compression with up to 750 kB/sec. and decompression with about 5 MB/sec.,
with compression rates of about 80% are possible! It has been uploaded to Aminet.
Download (22 kB)
Moreover, the icon contest for Digital Almanac is over. Winner is Dieter Klisch. Congratulations!
The graphics will soon be on display on the DA homepage.
Graphics contest - deadline extended
Due to the pityful response, the graphics contest of the Amiga magazine
amiga.topcool has
been extended to May 31st. The supergame "Shadow Of The Third Moon" can be won.
Theme of the title page is Turboboards - More power for Amigas (tests of 68k and PPC
turboboard reviews). Raytracing pictures would be nice, but pictures with 2D effects
are ok too. The speed / power of the turboboard(s) should be felt while looking at the
picture. The picture should be b/w-enabled (means, high contrast). Please mail your
submissions - the chance for winning is really big! The artist creating the best
picture (which will be used, too) will get the game.
Our pages have recieved a new outfit in the meantime, and have been extended by several
been applied to 2IDs i-NETstore. Come have a look.
VWP News: Java/Kaffe for BeOS
After the documentation How to Install Java
for BeOS has been expanded, the BeKaffe homepage vanished. The new URL
is sadly still offline. So the JavaRunner for BeOS
is pretty useless after all, since BeKaffe cannot be downloaded anywhere. If someone has the original and,
if possible, complete BeKaffe package (.pkg file and / or source code), please contact us so the BeKaffe
homepage or a mirror can be put online as soon as possible.
Innovative celebrates 5th birthday!
Innovative is five years old! For five years, we have been working for the AMIGA®, and
in this time frequently pushed it forward with our uniquely innovative and low-cost software.
Due to this, for one month (up to and including June 21st) we lower the price for fxPAINT
to 109,- DM. You save 30,- DM!! If you have been planning to purchase the fastest image
processor and jack-of-all-trades in the graphics area for the AMIGA®, this is the
opportunity!
