Linux-PPC: Floppy patch 1.0
Pavel Fedin aka Sonic released Floppy driver patch for Linux 2.6.8 kernel. This patch allows to use a floppy drive in non-DMA mode on PegasosPPC machines. To use it:
  1. Do not build floppy driver as a module, link it statically. Transferring parameters to it from insmod is still problematic, at least it doesn't work properly on the author's system.
  2. Specify floppy=nodma in kernel's arguments. Also you'll need to specify your drive type here using floppy=[Drive number],[Drive type],cmos. For example, floppy=0,4,cmos specifies type 4 (1.44 mb 3.5") for drive 0.
This patch does not affect operation of the driver in DMA mode so it's safe to use on any platform.

Aminet back online, volunteers needed
To compensate the breakdown of us.aminet.net, a new Aminet main server has been established which can be reached at www.aminet.net or main.aminet.net. Aminet now uses a completely new web interface written by Nicolas Mendoza, originally implemented for amirepo.net. As most of the internal scripts as well as the new web interface had to be adapted or have been rewritten from scratch, there still might be some rough edges, smaller bugs or dead links left - but Aminet is working again and uploads are getting processed.

Please note that currently only the main server is working properly, mirrors are not being updated yet and uploads at mirror sites are ignored. This will be addressed later on - for now please stick to the URLs given above to access Aminet. If you want to upload to Aminet, use your favourite FTP client to connect to main.aminet.net and upload to the "new" directory as outlined in Aminet's help files.

Urban Mueller, founder and main administrator of Aminet, is going to retire as soon as the new infrastructure is in place. He will be hosting the main server but will no longer be part of the administration team. The exact details of Aminet's future administration structure are not decided yet, but amiga-news.de is currently assembling a new team that will be responsible for Aminet in the future.

Volunteers wanted

We are searching for one or two volunteers that could assist us in moderating uploads. An upload moderator should meet the following requirements:
  • Basic knowledge about Unix shells (moving, deleting, renaming files)
  • Broadband Internet access
  • English speaker

If you fullfill these requirements and would like to become a part of the new Aminet team, please contact us at team@amiga-news.de. (cg)

MOS-Tools

In the MOS-tools for the Shell are collected the is_shift & is_alt as well as randbootpic. The first ones wait for the String- or Alt-key and give back WARN (otherwise 0).

The command randbootpic copies a random file from a chosen directory as cgxbootpic.library to the directory MOSSYS:libs/cgxbootpic.library to change the bootpic.

IRC-Client: WookieChat 1.4 (Beta)
WookieChat is a MUI-based IRC-client for AmigaOS 3/4 (screenshot). In version 1.4 "DCC GET" as well as the support for colourful texts have been added.

According to the author the colour support does not still work perfectly: Iconifying or starting the MUI-Prefs may cause colour bugs if the program uses a seperate screen. This can be undone by entering "/a".

The 68k-version becomes instable after some server connections because the string which contains the nickname is overwritten in the memory. The author is grateful for some feedback.

Please pay attention to the fact that Malibu requires at least version 1.9 of Hollywood. Meridian 2.12 Released for AmigaOS 3.x and MorphOS
Guido Mersmann released version 2.12 of Meridian, a commodity that allows programs to be called in the manner of a PDA using handwriting recognition as virtual hotkeys. The startpoint and direction of mouse movement play a role and allow the use of countless combinations that may be freely used.

With Meridian you can leaf through screens and windows, close windows, close requesters, and start programs and actions with just a movement of the mouse. This all occurs without a visible interface, pop-up menu, or dock. Only the pointer appears on the screen.

This version contains some new features and minor improvements, among them a workaround for the "drifting directory" problem that was solved by fixing a bug in the input.device for MorphOS.

Features:
  • Commodity
  • Online help
  • Locale Support

MorphOS: "IR tool" for remote control
Carsten Siegner developed a small program to demonstrate the control of a Pegasos computer via a remote control. Required for this is an infrared receiver module, Siegner uses a module from blue-blacklight.de.

"IR server" moves the mouse arrow, emulates the right mouse key and some keyboard keys and controls ArtEffect, fxPAINT, AmigaAMP, FroggerNG and Mplayer.

All in all supports the IR server 34 remote control keys where some are used several times. For directly supported programs are the following actions possible:
  • ArtEffect: can only be started
  • fxPAINT: can be started and stopped. Images can be loaded
  • AmigaAMP: is completely supported
  • FroggerNG: is completely supported excluding the track control
  • Mplayer: can be switched to normal mode or to DVD player. All keys are supported

In addition you can open/close a CD/DVD drive via a remote control. Besides that supports the server an asycronous universal requester controled via the remote control to input files.

The program is written completely in ARexx and needs the following libraries:
  • tritonlibrary
  • tritonrexx.library
  • rexxtricks.library
  • rexxserdev.library
  • rexxsyslib.library

Instructions: Using DrawStudio on the Pegasos
Carsten Siegner describes as follows how one may get DrawStudio to run on the Pegasos. He writes:

"First you should get the archive from my webpage: Drawst.lha. It contains a monitor driver named "PAL." That's a PAL emulation for CyberGraphX. Further there's a prefs file for Drawstudio. Copy this to the DrawStudio directory.

After that DrawStudio starts fine with a normal screen-mode picture. The only thing still missing is SmartWin from Aminet. This gets past a small bug in DrawStudio. SmartWin must be copied to the startup directory. After a reboot, the Pegasos user may use DrawStudio totally normally." (snx) (Translation: dm)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

We've completed the first month of a new Amiga year. Overall, it was
a pretty quiet month, with no great earth-shaking news stories.
However, there were some subtle events that are worth noting. First,
for the first time in ages, the Amiga.com website has had an update.
It's not a major change, but it shows attention throughout the site.
That's something I wasn't sure was ever going to happen, and it's a
very welcome positive step. It shows someone is paying attention to
the business again.
Second (and the subject of our lead-off story) the much delayed Club
Amiga T shirts have actually shipped! How many of us had given up hope
that this would ever happen? I'm betting I'll never see mine, as I
never got a comfortable feeling my Club Amiga membership had been
registered at Amiga, but some folks at least should be seeing theirs.
This is another good sign for the future. Old committments are being
kept as well as possible.
Of course, nothing is ever all positive. We have also discovered that
Achim Stegemann, author of such notable Amiga software as "Digital
Almanac" has left the Amiga developer community. He will be missed.
Let's hope we'll continue to see more of the positive changes so
we'll have fewer of these negative ones.

 Editor

From Amiga.com: We have heard from several people, primarily in the
US, that they have yet to receive their t-shirts.

The shirts dropped shipped on the same day and date worldwide.
Without commenting on the merits of various postal systems, hang in
there, they should be on the way.

Amiga has checked with USPS today and were told arrival could take
from 1 to 2 weeks.

 Club Amiga T-shirts Shipped

Amiga t-shirts have shipped and should be arriving as you read this

isn't it?"

Prior to shipping, Amiga Inc. constructed as accurate a mailing list
as possible.

AmiMSN is an MSN messenger client for the Amiga, written in AREXX and
useing rexxreqtools.library, rxsocket.library, rexxdossupport.library
and rexxsupport.library.

It has been compressed into an executable for easy use.

AmiMSN is the only MSN messenger client for the Amiga that supports
the ability to send and receive files. It uses the MSNFTP protocol to
accomplish this. Sender must not be behind a firewall.

It spoofs as MSN Messenger 6.2 for maximum compatibility.

It is primarily a console client, but has been coded to allow any IRC
client to act as it's GUI. It is similar to BitlBee but adheres a lot
more closely to RFC 1459 for compatiblity with most IRC clients.

Some recent changes include since (1.0rc5):

 * Fixed: Now works with all .NET passports. (Previously only worked
with hotmail.com accounts)

 * File transfer via MSNFTP support added. Sender must accept inbound
connections. If you are using this through WinUAE and have Norton
Antivirus 2005, you NEED to completely disable Norton Internet Worm
Protection before you can send files.

 * Changed: AmiMSN.cfg now requires you set a default initial status,
or you may start AmiMSN with an argument.

 * Fixed: ReadCList() function couldn't parse a contact that was
pending authorization and not in your forward list. This also cause
the DETAILS command to crash AmiMSN when it encountered this.

 * Fixed: ADDUSER would crash AmiMSN if you tried adding someone who
was in your database but not on your forward list.

 * Fixed: ADDUSER would crash AmiMSN if you tried to add someone who
was already in your contact list.

Epistula is to AmigaOS what GAIM is to Linux and Windows. For people
not in the know, GAIM is an instant messenger application which can
handle a variety of IM protocols, for example Microsoft MSN, AOL AIM
and Yahoo Messenger.

I know JabberWocky can provide a similar service, but that requires
extra setting up with Jabber ID's etc. This way, you can log straight
onto your favourite protocol, by-passing any need for yet another IM
account. One of the main reasons I started to write this client was
because I couldn't be bothered with Jabber... I can't be the only
one... can I?

Unlike GAIM, Epistula is written in a modular fashion in that each
'protocol' is a plugin which can be installed, and updated, seperately
from the main application and other plugins.

    Beta Testing
Updated Tuesday, 11th January, 2005

Testing for the current 68k OS3.x version of Epistula is now going
public. You are welcome to try this pre-release version, and any of
the available plugins, on AmigaOS 3.x, MorphOS and/or AmigaOS 4.

I have decided to release the beta testing of the 68k version as it
will mostly likely be put on hold until I have a native AmigaOS 4
version compiled. I will be ordering my Amiga One within the next two
weeks, and hopefully have the development environment up and running
and compiling Epistula within a month. Until then, try this version
and if it works, cool! If not, I'm afraid you're just going to have to
wait a little longer.

Please note that from various testing environments, the current
version hasn't much success. It does work for me with my OS 3.1 Opus
Megallen system on my A4000, as does it work on my WinUAE
configuration at work. However, download this at your own risk, I
cannot be held responsible for any bugs, crashes and/or loss of data
and do not provide support for this pre-release version.

Please read the ReadMe file carefully before installing and running
the software.

Note: If you're having problems with the βeta, a few things to look
out for:

 * Please make sure you have all the required MUI MCC modules
installed. If you're running the software on AmigaOS 4 then missing
MCC files have been known to crash the application before it even
starts up.

 * You must have an MSN account already set up and working with your
contacts already added. You cannot do this with Epistula, use the
official client, AmiMSN or any other client which is able to do it.

 * Remember, Epistula is not a finished application. Some things are
missing, or don't work at all, e.g. the 'Add Contact' menu item.

 * AmiSSL version 1.1 is required and can be found here. Law
permitting in your country, I would advise you to download all of the
ciphers.

 * A possible problem with Roadshow and/or my socket coding could
prevent chat sessions from initialising. Miami Deluxe and WinUAE
bsdsocket.library seem to work just fine.

 * Trouble authenticating usually points to AmiSSL configuration
problems if you're sure you are supplying the correct credentials.
Thanks to Tomppeli on AW.net for a possible solution which should be
typed into the CLI:

      setenv SAVE amissl/SSL_VERSION ssl3
      setenv SAVE amissl/SSL_CLIENT_VERSION ssl3

This is a major release of AFPL Ghostscript, and for maximum
compatibility the binary is a 68020 no-fpu build as FPU builds can
cause problems on emulators. This should run on all systems that are
68k AmigaOS compatible. This version of Ghostscript contains a lot of
new rendering code not present in any earlier versions of Ghostscript.
The rendering is also very fast, and includes new optimisations for
rendering fonts at very low resolutions. So the rendering is better
and faster than in any earlier Ghostscripts.

The 68k build contains the Turboprint driver which I debugged for
AFPL Ghostscript 8.00. The x86-AROS port is for i386 upwards. For
people who dont know what Ghostscript is: Ghostscript (both AFPL and
GNU) is a cross platform program for viewing + printing + converting
Postscript and PDF files. And it achieves a high amount of
compatibility with current PS + PDF documents on the internet. This
port contains my own truecolour and HAM8 viewers. It also contains the
viewers I wrote for grayscale, black and white as well as 8-bit colour
and will run on both AGA and graphics card systems. You can use it
also to convert PS to PDF as well as PS and PDF to jpeg, png, and
various other formats. >Michael Merkel has verified that the program
runs completely correctly on the AmigaOne and has printed via
Turboprint on the A1.

SimpleCat V2.10 released
If you know the original CatComp, you know that inserting and especially removing of single texts is a real pain, because you need to edit any language file and the descriptor. Just four languages and you need to edit 5 files and run CatComp 5 times to get updated catalogs and source files.

SimpleCat supports much more flexibility and more features. The main argument is that SimpleCat just needs one file to create an unlimited amount of different catalogs and source files. In addition to that the usage is much easier compared to CatComp.

Thanks to the massive import and export features it's worth a look anyway. SimpleCat is able to import and export catalogs, #?.cd and #?.ct files in any combination. This for example allows to create source files by importing normal catalogs.

Features:
  • Just one file needed to create all locale related files
  • Catalogs and source-files will be created in one pass. This saves time in parsing the same data over and over
  • It's possible to import and export any number of different source files at once
  • Optional auto numbering for all IDs
  • Highly specified storage system provides maximum processing speed
  • Possible import formats: #?.cs, #?.catalog, #?.cd, #?.ct files
  • Possible export formats: #?.cs, #?.catalog, #?.cd, #?.ct, #?.c and #?.asm files
  • Automatically creates full featured #?.cs files from catalogs, #?.cd or #?.ct files
  • Fully localized
  • 68000 and MorphOS PPC version

Aminet: Status Update
September last year wuarchive.wustl.edu, the server hosting the main Aminet archive us.aminet.net, went down due to a broken RAID controller. Since then, Aminet doesn't accept uploads.

Despite the original announcement that wuarchive.wustl.edu would only host "sponsered" archives once the server would be up and running again, us.aminet.net went back online November last year. Uploads are still not being processed though.

Approached by amiga-news.de, Mark Bober from Washington University (wuarchive.wustl.edu) explained that the backup that was used to re-establish us.aminet.net is incomplete - several scripts are broken or missing. This information has been forwarded to Aminet admin Urban Mueller, who will be cooperating with Mark Bober to repair the damage on Aminet's main server or help to establish a new main server.

Further news will be announced soon. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Compiler: vbcc 0.8h released
The C compiler vbcc by Volker Barthelmann (compiler kernel) and Frank Wille (Amiga specific adaptions) is available as version 0.8h. The compiler supports ISO-C following ISO/IEC 9899:1989 and a part of the newer standard ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (C99).

The main changes:
  • M68k code generator: Fixed -O2 optimizer bug with switch statements
  • Any register can be selected to hold a function's return value
  • Preprocessor (ucpp) supports the #warning directive
  • Improved linker script for OS4: allows linking with CODE, DATA, BSS and unnamed sections (from 68k hunk objects). Fixed _LinkerDB definition
  • M68k- and MorphOS-headers must not contain inline code for MUI_NewObject(), which confuses the preprocessor
  • vclib: Improved precision for ASCII to floating point conversions in vfscanf()
  • vclib: A set error indicator in the stream no longer blocks further read/write/seek operations
  • vsend crashed when trying to break with ctrl-c
  • vasm: Fixed problem with small data mode and 68k hunk objects
  • vasm's new option -opt-fconst automatically optimizes float constants to a lower precision when possible. Enabled this in vbcc's 68k scripts
  • vlink bug fixes: PHDR definition, 64k segment alignment for PPC/ELF, absolute symbols in hunk format, etc.

Computer- & Videobörse on March, 5th and 6th in Bremen
On March, 5th and 6th takes place the Computer- & Videobörse in Bremen in the Bürgerzentrum in the Neuen Vahr once again.

Jörg Dittmar wrote about it: "We, the 'Users der Nordseeküste' will be there, too, and will showcase our computers. Next to the new AmigaOne of Ralf 'Mika' Tönjes, I - Jörg 'the_last_Amiganer' Dittmar - will be there with my Pegasos 2 again. Let's see whether it will work out all right with the new BurnIT 3.0?

Of course there will be our little Amiga but also PCs and numerous Macs. We hope for the appearance of Michael Garlich (Titan Computer) and some more faces known from the Amiga and Pegasos scene. In October, KDH-Datentechnik made a short visit.

The consumers area of the fair won't be neglectable, too. There are always some good things to get but also monitors, LCDs, hard discs, memory, and so on, new as well as used - the visit will be worth it in any case.

The entrance will cost 4 Euros respectively 3 Euros with special ticket. Parking possibilities are plenty in the multi-storey car-park." (snx) (Translation: wk)

The program R by Guido Mersmann has been updated to version 2.10 and is available in the MorphZone. R is a realtime-generator for graphical user interfaces for almost every DOS command.

Product description by the author: Did you ever feel boring when dealing with DOS commands and their arguments? Did you ever wait for a GUI because the CLI only tool is to complicated for your Shell/CLI skills? Did you ever understand all that cryptic argument names? Did you ever wish DOS arguments would be in your native language for better understanding?

Yes? Then here comes the solution for your problems. "R" - The only weapon to defeat templates! (Something like Airwolf! :) )

Since the early 90s "R" is the one and only weapon to defeat DOS templates and now it returns! Reenforced, upgraded, reworked and ready for the future.

Tons of new features also allow professional to enhance DOS and for all other it's as easy to use as ever:

Simple call "r list" to get a high quality localized gadget user interface for the DOS command list. Set up the options and push execute. Setup predefined options for stuff you need every time and never type it again!

No longer wait for an user interface made by others. Grab a project icon, insert "R" as default tool and there it is!

Ambient source code under GPL released
The source code of the current version 1.40 Workbench replacement Ambient by David 'Zapek' Gerber was released today under the GPL.

The latest released version of Ambient together with MorphOS 1.4.2 was V1.29. Next to this the author has set up a Paypal link for users who want to give as a thank you for the release a small donation.

Some features of the current v1.40:
  • MUI-based: The user interface toolkit is MUI (Magic User Interface). It is one of the most flexible and powerful out there. Every window is resizeable thanks to the built-in layout engine. Moreover, the user can change the look of the interface himself. No need to hardcode settings from the main program.
  • Multi-threaded: The whole design of Ambient is asynchronous. One of the key point during the development was that Ambient must never look busy and keep reacting whatever happens. Each job that has a locking possibility (eg. I/O) or can take some time is scheduled to a thread that handles it separately. Conditions which usually upset other desktops, like a network device being unreachable, are not a problem for Ambient.
  • Various icon formats: Ambient handles a numerous format of icons: the original Amiga format, the MagicWB variant with proper remapping, the 256 colors indexed Newicons, the 256 colors indexed Glowicons and its own true color format with alpha based on PNG. Creating an icon is easy, use your favorite paint package and save the icon as PNG.
  • Truecolor rendering: There is no support for CLUT (paletted) modes. This simplifies the internal design greatly as Ambient does quite a lot of graphics processing. 8-bit screens are a thing of the past and not worth supporting with current hardware.
  • 64 Bit arithmetic: 64-bit arithmetic is used for operations related to storage and file handling. Large disks and large files are handled properly.
  • Localisation: Ambient uses a so-called catalog system which means all its strings can be fetched from some external source if the desired language is different than English.
  • Fast I/O: Ambient is very efficient regarding I/O operations and is finetuned to common storage speeds. Its buffers automatically adapt themselves to the given situation.
  • Built-in disk-formatting: Actual formatting of disk partitions can be done from Ambient. The various modes includes quick format, full format and a complex verification format.
  • Different file views: Depending on the media content, a different view can be used. For example an icon view with thumbnails, a list view showing most attributes of files, a view showing pictures. Everything is possible and views are pluggable modules.
  • File handling: Each media can be handled differently depending on its mimetype. Ambient allows to configure exactly what to do with a given media. For example you might want to run some player tool when double clicking on a sound file or use Ambient's built in replayer.
  • Panels: Ambient offers a quick way of creating panels and populating them with programs or applets. There're various options to configure the look and the behaviour of each panel.
  • Visual effects: Ambient has various visual effects to make things nifty and smooth. They are heavily optimized to avoid any impact on the general responsiveness. High quality resizing, alpha effects, blurring, .. they all take advantage of MorphOS' graphics subsystem: CyberGraphX.
  • ARexx support: There's a built in ARexx port which offers scripting support. Ambient uses these commands itself and allows scripts to perform various tasks.
  • Sound engine: Ambient features a built-in sound engine with drivers and API. It allows to play various sounds easily and offers asynchronous modes.
  • Hardware support: Ambient uses Altivec optimized code and takes advantage of the streaming features offered by the Pegasos 2 MPX bus.
This release has been made possible also by Oliver Wagner and Stefan Stuntz, who gave David Gerber the permission for a few include files and parts of code. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Position Taken on MUI Version 4 for MorphOS
Under the title link you'll find that MUI's developer Stefan Stuntz has articulated his viewpoint of the situation between his user interface and the MorphOS operating system.

Further, MUI V4 is nearly completed and there is nothing legally binding that prohibits uniform versions being released for all three of the cited operating systems. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Though we own some Pegasos computers with Radeon cards there does not seem to exist a 3D driver yet for this system that is made available to developers. It's for sure that an Amiga 4000/040 is to slow to develop a good 3D map on it.

So our question is:
  • Is there a 3D driver for Radeon cards?
  • Is anybody right now developing a 3D driver for Radeon cards?
  • And if such a person exists: would this person possibly be willing to put it at our disposal for the development of the "Tales of Tamar" 3D map for the Amiga or Pegasos?
(Alternatively we would be ready to distribute the driver via Eternity if such an interest should exist.)
At this time the card is fully functional only under WinUAE with Warp3D emulation or via software renderer. Systems with Voodoo or Permedia2 cards we do not own." (snx) (Translation: wk)

New poll: Which operating system is your workhorse?
In our last poll we asked you about your judgement of the Amiga's future and wether you would perhaps be ready to invest once more in an "Amiga" (respectively a clone). The results of this poll can be found here.

In our current poll (title link) we are interested in the operating system you are using privately most:
  • AmigaOS 3 on a real Amiga
  • AmigaOS 3 on an emulator
  • AmigaOS 4
  • MorphOS
  • AROS
  • A combination of 1-5, e.g. OS4 or MorphOS at home, OS3 on a laptop or at work
  • One of the systems named under 1-5 in conjunction with another system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux...)
  • The OS I use most has nothing to do with the Amiga (Windows, Mac OS, Linux...)
The actual result can be found here, while we explicitly point out that the results aren't representative in any way. (cg) (Translation: wk)

AmigaOS4: bugfixed version of the game xbill 2.4
The AmigaOS4 port of the small point'n'click shooter xbill was replaced by a bugfixed version after the original OS4 version had crashed very fast on some systems.

Emulator: E-UAE 0.8.27 (AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, Linux, Mac OS)
Richard Drummond has published a new version of the Amiga emulator E-UAE. E-UAE is the attempt to make available the newest version of WinUAE to users of different operating systems.

In E-UAE 0.8.27 the compability has been further improved because elements of the "Core Emulation" from WinUAE 0.9.9.x have been used. The 68k-emulator is now 5 % faster because of some optimations and under Mac OS X the emulator now works up to 20 % faster. Furthermore several bugs have been fixed. You can get a complete list of all changes from the Changelog.

The version for Linux (x86) is already available under the title link. Versions for AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, Linux (PPC) and Mac OS X will follow soon. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: Update of Python 2.4 Port to Version 0.4pre
MorphOS-Version 0.4pre of the scripting language Python 2.4 is available for download in the Pegasos forum.

Python is an object-oriented programming language that was developed by Guido van Rossum in the early 90s at the Center for Scientific Information Applications in Amsterdam. Meridian 2.0 for AmigaOS 3.x and MorphOS released
Guido Mersmann has released version 2.0 of Meridian, a commodity, that allows, like a PDA with writing recognition, the use of virtual hotkeys for e.g. calling programs. Because start point and direction of a mouse movement are taken into account there are close to infinite combinations which are freely useable.

With Meridian it is possible to cycle through screens and windows, to close windows, to cancel requesters, to start programs or start actions by moving the mouse only. That all without visual interface or pop-up menu or dock - only the mouse pointer on the screen.

Features:
  • Commodity
  • Online help
  • Locale support
