Statement of Genesi concerning trouble of delivery
On MorphOS-News.de Genesi has given its opinion on the current trouble of delivery of
the Pegasos. It is said that Genesi is waiting for more Articia-chips of Mai. Until Genesi
will get and afterwards test it a delivery of the present chip version is expected which
works without any errors thanks to the April chips in the Pegasos.
Besides this Genesi tests an alternative but something more expensive chip so in future
it may be possible to work together with a different seller.
At the end of 2003 MorphOS may also be published for Macintosh computers but probably
only as an executing second unit for applications which should be also offered for the
Mac. In this connection it is asked if there is anybody who is interested in porting
"wxwindows" on MorphOS.

End of GRex petition
M. Lück wrote:
Today is the end of the GRex-petition. Until today 296 users have subscribed.
TriMa and me want to thank you for your support. Unfortunately this petition has failed.
I want to explain in the following lines why it is so.
Two weeks after the start of the petition I have sent the first list with all signatures
(without email addresses) to DCE per email. I got an answer of DCE at once. DCE wrote
that they would be glad about a support of OS4 and that they are interested in the current
discussion.
We got the information of Steffen Häuser that the cybpci.library written by Ralph 'Laire' Schmidt
will not work in the 68k emulation because of the 68k MMU setup. So the petition still
became more important because presently GRex users have no chance of getting AmigaOS 4.0
started.
We got all information per email which Hyperion needs to support the GRex. Four addresses
are needed:
- The base of GRex I/O address
- The interrupt acknowledge address
- The base address of config space mappings or
- the PCI-config and PCI-data address
No circuit diagramm, hardware or software documents are needed. These information I
sent DCE per email. I have not got any response until today.
Then we got the information that bplan has the hardware rights. This means DCE has only
a licence for the GRex. If this is true or not we do not know. One week ago I contacted
Mr. Carda per email for getting clearness. But I also have not got any response until now.
That is a pity.
Now we hope that we can attract attention by posting this article.
Thank you very much again to all participants...
The attempt of moving something forward means so much to us - also if it may fail.

First working beta of Powerkonverter
Today I have published a working version of my program called "Powerkonverter".
Currently it supports all important basic functions of ffmpeg and additionally the
"Motion Estimation" preference. Videos can be splitted or changed. Besides this all
formats are supported which has been newly added.
But in this version pictures series will not be recognized. This will be the next step.
Installation:
Unpack the archive, copy the corresponding libs to your Workbench/libs directory.
For starting the program you need to be installed the PNG datatype.
ffmpeg must be in the system path (c:, s: or something like that). I have copied ffmpeg
to c:.
I have programmed a PNG-GUI because then the program itself has only the half size compared
with an IFF version. Additionally PNG datatypes are also available in PPC versions which
accelerates the program.
Shortcuts:
ESC: Quitting the program
Return: Starting ffmpeg
Control + C: Aborting ffmpeg
Space: Stopping the console output of ffmpeg
Backspace: Continuing console output of ffmpeg
I have not implemented a seperate button for starting ffmpeg because it is simply unpractical.
You can confirm the shortcuts on each place in the GUI like e.g. the Return key.
If you want to test a newly preferenced figure only push the Return key for starting ffmpeg
with the new figure.
If you want to program yourself new figures in the cycle buttons it is quite simple.
The program directory contains several text files ".txt". These ones you can rewrite
up to a certain level. The only thing which can be not changed is the amount of the
entries. In the same way it works with the format lister. You can write your own formats
if they are not there yet.
Later I will also add the automatic picture identification and the VideoCD option.

The 32x32 patterns for the action strategy game 'Schlachtfeld' (graphics phase I) are in a raw format online now. The patterns do not fit exacty together. This is mostly because of the rendering which shifted the patterns a little bit.

News from Eyetech: State of AmigaOneXE
After moving the website of Eyetech onto another server the site is now up to date.
Beside some changes in prices for the Eyetech complete systems a change for the
AmigaOne interested persons is interesting: The AmigaOneXE-G3 will be delivered with
a G3 CPU (750FX) with 800 MHz instead of the announced 700 MHz.
On the AmigaOne mailing list Alan Redhouse is talking about the latest
stateof the
delivery of the AmigaOneXE:
It seems the first 25 boards are delivered to Eyetech and are taken under another
quality control by 25 chosen testers. The other motherboards will be delivered to
Eyetech in the next week. Because of the high inquiry and the fact of the quality
check by Eyetech the delivery will take a longer time than expected so the boards
will be delivered to dealers and customers in February.

Today grand opening of The Butterfly Vale
Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages! The Butterfly Vale has opened its gates for visitors.
The Vale is your future source for MorphOS ports and high-quality own MorphOS developments.
As for your journey to us, please recall that the Vale is located in a remote place where the
air is still fresh and clean. We would like to keep it that way and ask you to if possible leave
your power-consuming Pentium switched off and use alternate means of transportation. We recommend
coming in by flying horse.
Here's a short overview of our main attractions. While you browse our various areas, you may
notice that we have some smaller archives up that are not mentioned here.
cdda.library 1.0
cdda.library is a MorphOS library that provides CD digital audio services to A-Box programs.
Developers benefit from the library's high-level functions such as drive search
by certain criteria, looped playing of CD sections, event callbacks and author/track title
information where available.
Users benefit from the library's drive autorecognition by not having to enter or even recall
any device/unit values in most cases - thanks to cdda.library's powerful functions, ScummVM
MorphOS is the only port that does not need the user to specify a CD drive.
ScummVM 0.3.0b + new CVS
The full ScummVM 0.3.0b MorphOS distribution is now online. It includes an updated PDF manual,
and the icons have been converted to Ambient format. Also, there are now new icons for the Simon
the Sorcerer games.
A new CVS snapshot has been uploaded as well, this one is the first public MorphOS snapshot
with experimental, preliminary support for "THE CURSE OF MONKEY ISLAND", as well as support
for the Mac/Amiga versions of Simon the Sorcerer 2 and early support for the CD32 version of
Simon the Sorcerer.
Exult 1.0
Exult is a rewrite of the Ultima 7 engine for modern operating systems. It allows you to
play one of the best and most detailed parts of Origin's famous Ultima series. Exult has
recently turned to version 1.0 which means that both parts of Ultima 7, "The Black Gate"
and "The Silver Seed" along with their add-ons "The Black Sword" and "Forge of Virtue"
are fully supported now. The original data files are required to play.
FreeSCI 0.3.4
The MorphOS port of FreeSCI had been announced three days ago on the FreeSCI homepage
(http://freesci.linuxgames.com). Today saw the official release of FreeSCI 0.3.4, and
the MorphOS version is available for download from the Vale on the same day! FreeSCI is
an attempt to create a portable interpreter for games written for Sierra On-Line's SCI system.
Playable games include King's Quest IV, Space Quest 3, Leisure Suit Larry 2 & 3, The Colonel's
Bequest, and several others. 32 bit Ambient icons for nine games known to be completable
are included in the archive.
Frotz
Frotz is an interpreter for the adventure games produced by Infocom, and fan works created
with Graham Nelson's Inform compiler.
Frotz MorphOS Release 1 is based on David Kinder's Amiga port, Release 14 (the current Amiga
version is release 16). Major changes to the Amiga version (14) are:
- Updated port to Frotz 2.43 code base
- Made Frotz fully graphics cards compliant
- Rewrote GUI code from BGUI to MUI
- Rewrote audio.device code to AHI
- Aspect correction for V6 graphics
- Fixed lots of preferences issues
Inform
Graham Nelson's Inform allows you to write your own games to run on Infocom interpreters.
In addition to the binary, I've provided an archive with most material from Glenn Hutchings'
all-in-one Inform package. It is meant for new users who want to start quickly with Inform.
It includes the library, some useful 3rd party contributions, examples and a tutorial, all
ready to use.
Magnetic
Magnetic is an interpreter for the adventure games once produced by the British company Magnetic
Scrolls. It is based on David Kinder's Amiga port. Major changes from the Amiga version are:
- Rewrote Copper code to proper graphics cards compliant code
- Implemented title splash screen
- Implemented animations for Magnetic Windows games
- Implemented online hints for Magnetic Windows games
The Butterfly Vale is looking forward to your visit. Also keep in mind that this is
just the beginning ... (ps)

Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper: Another SID-driver for the Catweasel
The second Amiga-based SID-driver is a playsid.library that accesses the SID of the Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper directly. At the moment this only works on Catweasel controllers that are plugged in a Zorro slot of an Amiga, support for Clockport-connected controllers will be added shortly. Playsid plays back a lot of tunes that are known from C64-games and demos. The probably most famous collection of SID music is the High Voltage Sid collection that contains more than 20000 songs.
Special thanks goes to the brothers Rakesh und Sharwin Raghoebardayal who have adapted the library to the Catweasel in their spare time, and released it as freeware.

This time with GUI. This version offers the possibility of defining
a dividing line for each menu entry and the activation by the middle

New Amiga-Product: Pure Basic
Xing Interactive are very proud to announce the release of the powerful and versatile programming language "Pure Basic". The product will be released in the second week of February 2003 and is available to consumers at the very competitive price of 29,95 Euro in DVD case packaging.
Pure Basic is more advanced and flexible then any of the other Basic programming languages currently on the market and it comes at a fraction of the price. The beauty of this product is the versatility though as you can develop your own games and applications on PC Windows, Linux or even AmigaOS! Speed is another unique selling point. Where other Basic programming languages crawl at a slow pace due to complex instruction translations Pure Basic shines by even outperforming C++ written code. ADA team with inquiry over the Soms3D-Engine
Sylvio K., director/conductor of the Anime development for Amiga team,
decided to start an inquiry concerning the Soms3D-Engine due to the many e-mails with suggestions he got.
Originally it was intended to make Soms an on-line adventure but due to
the suggestions in various mails something else could become of it. Everyone who would like to participate in the inquiry, please
answer the following questions by sending an e-mail with the reference "Soms3D". These are the questions:
What do you think? What shall become of the Soms3D engine?
Currently the favorites are a 'Silent Hill' similar horror game and a 'GTA3'-Clone.

Set-top boxes and more: New statement by Genesi
In a new statement (title link) Raquel Velasco und Bill Buck of Genesi have
a.o. announced a contract for Pegasos and MorphOS based set-top boxes, which
provides for the cash flow necessary for the other projects.
Shows are expensive. 100,000 Dollars have been invested in a short
period of time just for the CES in Las Vegas and the ARC in Aachen and
the respective attention grabbing (not to forget the cost for the other public presentations and events).
Furthermore it contains another hint at having applied legal measures to get
AmigaOS on the Pegasos.
According to the announcement, the Pegasos is shipped with MorphOS, DebianPPC,
Mac-on-Linux and a bundle of games and applications. Ports of OpenBSD and
Gentoo are said to be in the works and available before the CeBIT. Furthermore
there are talks about ports of BeOS, OpenBeOS, NetBSD, Zeta and NewOS. SuSE and
Mandrake are already running on the Pegasos.

New pictures-search-game for Amiga
Computer City will release in 2003 a new game for Amiga computers, more details
can be found on the provisional website. For further information please contact info@compcity.nl or the Attention programmers team.
The freeware game developed by the programmers group Attention, these are Philippe van Calsteren, Elvis Poldervaart and Patrick Henz is a game similar to a FindIt error searching game called Foto/Foto that will be available for many platforms. This will work in the way that a website will be created on the Internet where the game will be played. Two almost identical pictures will be uploaded with one of them containing five errors.
The game itself will be run locally, there'll be only a contact to the server to download the pictures or to upload the result and to be entered into the highscore list. The first betas are said to be shown on the Benelux Amiga Show that is planned for April 2003.

Golem: Data Rights Group against the Collection of Flat-rate IP Numbers
Regulations designed to protect personal rights have been twisted to do the opposite.
After the government of Darmstadt, according to multiple press reports, directed Internet
provider T-Online to archive which customers used which IP numbers at which times (because
of many customer complaints), the Independent Center for Data Rights (ULD) commented on
the decision. The Darmstadt oversight officials pointed out that the ruling was limited, and that
the rights situation to the officials of other German states would be unchanged.

CHIP online: Hacker-Group: Spy Tool for File Exchange Software?
Roland 'Cyco Myco' Weigert writes:
I just read two very interesting columns at CHIP Online. The first is from January 14th and covers the topic:
"Hacker Group: Spy Tool for File Exchange Software." According to this there is apparently a hacker group
in the service of the RIAA which uses a covertly installed worm in Windows and Linux media players to see
what media files the user has, then sends the information back over the Internet to the music industry (RIAA).
In the second article, from yesterday, comes this:
(Music Industry: No Spying in File-sharing Software),
denies the RIAA, who have something to do with all this.

In order to make our menus a bit more readable we have removed the headings for 'Sub pages' and 'Special Pages.' These links may now be found in the upper menu under the link ´Sub Pages´ (bottom row, all the way on the right.
The links to our Partner Pages, which were formerly in the upper menu on the third row, are now in the right menu under ´Amiga Network.´
This was reached by a clear division between internal (upper menu) and external (right menu), and the right menu has become considerably shorter and thereby more readable. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Along the discussion (German) during the last week about new possibilities of funding there was several times the proposal among the comments to join the Amazon partner program. We signed it up now and there are now the two buttons for that built in at the right menu.
Many of you are buying books at Amazon. If you will do so in future by using one of the two buttons we will obtain a provision, which we can then use to fund amiga-news.de. So this is a kind of possibility to support us financially.

AmithlonTV
|
TV card software: AmithlonTV beta version 230
Guido Mersmann has released the beta version 230 of his TV card driver software
AmithlonTV.
New with this version:
- BUGFIX:
Found the crappy crash bug, that caused the bt8x8 driver sometimes to crash.
The same bug seems to caused the video freezing, the picture startup problem
and some fuzzy system trouble. I made fullspeed resizing tests without any
further picture trouble or crashes. Sometimes it's worth to rework a trouble
making driver from scratch!
- FEATURE:
The new reworked bt8x8 driver is able to process as many picture buffers
as required.
- FEATURE:
The new reworked bt8x8 driver is pre calculating the risc code size before
compiling, which causes less memory usage.
- BUGFIX:
Fixed a window sizing problem with smear (reported by Carsten Siegner).

Individual Computers: New year, new drivers, new prices
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper is not only a PCI-card, it can also be used in an
Amiga. The first SID-driver has now been released for AmigaOS: Stefan Haubenthal
has written a 6581sid.library for common C64 emulators like Frodo or MagiC64.
Download: 6581sid.lha - 1442 Bytes
Unfortunately, the new year also brings bad news: Higher taxes, higher energy
cost and higher wages at our contractors force us to increase some prices for the
first time in the nearly nine-year old history of the company. This mainly affects
the new products. On the other hand, we will decrease prices for the existing
inventory.
The new pricelist is valid from February 1st, 2003.
Prices at your local reseller may be different from the prices listed here,
especially because of differen VAT rates in the European countries. Prices
listed here include the German VAT of 16%. Price lists published previously
become invalid with the publication of this list.
Buddha Flash IDE controller 49,90 EUR
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper 89,90 EUR
Catweasel Z-II (incl. Buddha) 74,90 EUR
Catweasel ISA (PC-Version) 39,90 EUR
Gemini SCMS-killer (opto in) 149,00 EUR
Gemini SCMS-killer (coax in) 99,00 EUR
Graffiti Videocard 19,00 EUR
IDE-fix Express upgrade A1200 24,90 EUR
IDE-fix Adapter A4000 14,90 EUR
ISDN-Surfer w/o OVP 59,90 EUR
ISDN-Surfer w/ OVP 79,90 EUR
Silversurfer 29,90 EUR
Silversurfer limited Edition 34,90 EUR
A600 adapter for Silversurfer 9,90 EUR
X-Surf 2 ethernet 89,90 EUR
Lyra keyboard adapter 29,90 EUR
VarIO (Zorro/26-pin version) 49,00 EUR
VarIO (A1200 version) 59,00 EUR
PCI POST code display 39,90 EUR
Indivision Flickerfixer 99,00 EUR
Retro Replay 50,00 EUR
Retro Replay incl. Silversurfer 75,00 EUR
C-One reconfigurable computer mainboard aprox. 250,00 EUR
The products Kylwalda and IDE-fix express A1200 will only be produced on special
order. We're currently considering production outside Germany to keep the target
price of 189,- EUR for the Delfina soundcard.
Something funny at the end: Individual Computers is being massively attacked by
viruses in the past few weeks. Up to eight emails containing a virus arrive every
day. The amusing part about this is that it's viruses that only spread through
Windows and Outlook. Those who want to harm us should know that we're not using
sub-standard software, and attacks like this are simply ineffectual.

Pre-Releases of the new RC5-72 Clients available
Under the title link the AmigaOS-Clients (68k, PowerUp, WarpUp) for
the RC5-72 contest can be dowloaded. As said on amiga.org
the PowerUp-version is 100% MorphOS compatible. The clients
are so called "release candidate" versions. The versions have the numbers v2.9001.479.
The aim of the project RC5-75 is with as many computers as possible to decode a
72-bit-key. There are trillions of possibilites to compute. To take part in this you
do not have to have knowledge in programming, only free computer capacity. Jut
install te client, get some blocks and after decoding send them back. Help, a FAQ and
more explanations you will find at Amiga RC5 Team Effort.

Amiga Inc.: AmigaOS4 Feature Set: Release 1
January 13, 2003 - Snoqualmie, WA
Amiga is pleased to publish this first version of the feature set of the up
and coming AmigaOS4.0. The document will undergo revision in subsequent issues
but because of the massive demand for information made by the public, we have
decided to release it in its current state.
Due to the large amount of work and the obvious technical nature of OS development,
the document is both considerable in size, laden with jargon and, to save download
time, diagrams have not been included.
For those using older Amiga based PDF viewers, there may be a few minor issues
with displaying the front page graphics but this is due to issues with these
viewers. On official PDF viewers, and on the new AmigaOS4.0 viewer, the document
is rendered true.
Amiga would like to thank both those in the AmigaOS4.0 project team, who have
worked on this project with passion and commitment and those who have patiently
waited for their favourite platform to bloom once again. It has been a huge
undertaking and no one company, entity or person can take the credit. It has
been a fantastic demonstration of what makes the Amiga platform so special,
the coming together of like minds to build something extraordinary.
AmigaOS4.0. The legend continues.

AmigaOS4 Feature Set PDF

Sixgirls Computing Labs is under attack
John Klos from Sixgirls Computing Labs writes:
Sixgirls Computing Labs, which is known for being one of the only hosting
services which uses an Amiga as a full time server (reva.sixgirls.org), is
experiencing a massive denial of service attack of unprecedented
magnitude.
A previous attack saturated the 10-base-T connection of the Amiga server
with over 7 Mbps of syn packets, which caused loss of most connectivity
for part of a day, but the machine was put behind another Sixgirls server
with 100-base-T connections which filters this traffic.
Another attack began at midnight EST Sunday morning. Information from the
upstream router shows that this attack is using 150 Mbps of traffic to
make the connection unusable. Measures will be put into place to block
this traffic upstream, and normal service should resume sometime Monday.
The authorities are investigating.
Temporarily, you may have trouble accessing sites which are hosted on
reva.sixgirls.org, such as:
http://distributed.amiga.org/
http://www.totalamiga.org/
http://www.seal-amiga.co.uk/
http://ireland.amiga.org/
and others.

TV software: AmithlonTV beta version 229
Guido Mersmann published beta version 229 of the TV card driver software AmithlonTV.
- CHANGED:
Complete rework of the current video_bt8x8.lib.
Many routines replaced, improved or completly removed.
- BUGFIX:
Fixed a memory allocation problem. The video_bt8x8.lib didn't
work on non powerpci.library systems, now this is fixed.
- BUGFIX:
TVCard.library is now able to detect the Philips video chip
which is using the pci subclass "other" instead of video.
- FEATURE:
New option "Push in screen"! When using PowerWindows you're
able to drag windows out of the screen, which is very useful.
My TV window is placed at the right bottom of the screen by
default. When using the menu/hotkey to enlarge the window it
stays there and grows into the screen border. By using the new
option the window position is automaticaly changing to fit
on screen.

At Conrad Elektronik you can buy an interface for USB/FireWire to

Interesting though is the question whether this interface can work also in the other direction. IDE to USB/FireWire.

Collected Dreamworlds news - Crossfire II update (update)
There are many news to report:
The new homepage of Dreamworlds Development is online. The base design is already complete as well as are the news and the downloads. Information about projects and the team will follow in the next few days. Until then there's a link to the old homepage.
Crossfire II has experienced a big update. There's finally a demo version
(download: cf2_demo.lha - 11,7 MB)
and an update (download: cf2_upd101.lha),
containing the following:
- Alternative graphics functions that don't need ChunkyPPC;
solves problems of ChunkyPPC on Pegasos systems.
- Mission mode completely translated into German.
- Optionally playable in the Workbench window.
- The tutorial can be skipped when starting a new game.
- Active weapon is marked with light effect.
- New music piece specially for mission #11.
- Many missions details changed.
- Wrong colors when playing in 8bit without screen fading fixed.
- Crash in mission #26 fixed.
- "File not executable" error fixed.
People ordering the full version now will get already the new version with all known problems fixed. The demo version is up to this level, too, and lets you play the tutorial, 2 missions from the middle of the game and test the multiplayer mode. To keep the archive small in size were all animations and musics removed. A more complete demo will be released e.g. on the next AmigaFuture CD.
Crossfire II is a kind of Wing Commander seen from above with complex and varied missions, a thrilling background story, lavish effects and explosive multiplayer fights.
Update:
On the APC&TCP homepage have recently further screenshots of the game been released. The game is available at APC&TCP and in a few days also on the shelves in the stores. (ps) (Translation: wk)

The website www.getboinged.de which has gone offline some time ago will be online again
in two weeks. The goal has clearly determined: Supporting x86 users who use AmigaOS
via WinUAE.
The workshops describe the installation of AmigaOS3.9 for getting the best sound
as well as the creation of an Internet connection with Genesis. I try to show that
the use of AmigaOS is very easy with the help of an Amiga emulator. The proper
preferences are very important.
But before I will present you this issues I want to finish designing the homepage.
You will be able to watch the site with AWeb, IBrowse and Voyager in any case.
Now I want to speak a few words to the "negativ thinker": "Currently there is a
stagnation at users and developers. Why is it so? By working with UAE I could convince
users having the Amiga system. Today they use Windows and AmigaOS/WinUAE in a friendly
coexistence because there is good software on both sides. Try to expect the future
a little more positive!"

Interview with Urban Müller (Aminet Administrator)
Interview with Urban Müller
by Petra Struck - 09.01.2003 (In Deutsch)
As we had to report in early January, the Aminet series of CDs was cancelled. So Aminet CD
#52 will be the last one put together. This turn of events compelled us to ask a few questions of Urban Müller, the person who does the CDs and is
also an Aminet administrator.
Amiga-News: Who is Urban Müller?
Urban Müller: I'm an Amiga fan since way back when. I first satisfied this passion during my IT studies and then as I worked as a search machine programmer.
Amiga-News: What constitutes Aminet and what is Aminet?
Urban Müller: Aminet was the attempt to ease the load on our university's Amiga archive through the use of mirrors, and it succeeded through the help of volunteers.
Amiga-News: How many years have you busied yourself with Aminet?
Urban Müller: Oh my God, it's been almost ten years! :)
Amiga-News: How is Aminet organized? Who does what and how long does it take to do it?
Urban Müller: The two moderators - Matthias Scheler and I - proofread all uploads for correct *.readme file, to make sure there are no viruses, for appropriate content and correct category designation. Normally this doesn't take too much time, however new features (for example the new web interface from Andrea Kareth) and the maintenance of the many mirrors take some time.
Amiga-News: What sort of difficulties have you had to overcome in this enterprise?
Urban Müller: Almost everything has gone quite well. Only occasionally are mirror admins difficult to reach, and I myself have a network card problem with the Amiga :)
Amiga-News: How is Aminet financed?
Urban Müller: Luckily Aminet's financial requirements are not very high, because bandwidth and storage space have been provided by universities.
Amiga-News: The cancellation of the Aminet CD series will leave a hole that will not be easily filled. Why exactly is it being stopped?
Urban Müller: The number of breaks shrank steadily, also in part it's due to the fact that almost everyone can connect to the Internet and therefore doesn't need a CD.
Amiga-News: Under what circumstances would it be possible to carry on the CD series, for instance would it help if we had a subscription campaign which registered 500 new subscribers?
Urban Müller: I think that would only postpone the cancellation a bit.
Amiga-News: Could you possibly turn over the rights to make Aminet CDs to someone else?
Urban Müller: I wouldn't rule that out, if someone is interested.
Amiga-News: What feelings do you have about the current Amiga situation?
Urban Müller: It's going to be difficult for the Amiga to expand the tiny user base after such a long period of standing still, but I would like to be surprised by positive developments.
Amiga-News: Do you still have an Amiga?
Urban Müller: Of course, but now I spend more time using Linux.
Amiga-News: In closing, is there anything you would like to say to readers?
Urban Müller: I thank all the people who have contributed to Aminet, especially the software authors, who have invested countless hours. Without them the Amiga would never have been useful for as long as it has.
Amiga-News: Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to our questions. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Haage & Partner Website Revised
The webpage of Haage & Partner has been completely revised. At the first glance it seems that Amiga will not play a big role at H&P

focus of H&P is now visibly in other areas. (ps) (Translation: dm)

No Soldering Required: Radeon 9500 Conversion to Radeon 9700
Driver patch enables functions only offered by more expensive products. After the Russian website Overclockers.ru publicized a modification in which one could change a Radeon 9500 with 128 megs RAM to a better-performing Radeon 9700 with a BIOS update and a bit of solder, the story continued: tinkerers found new ways to do the same thing without any hardware modification nor warranty voiding, although there are a few restrictions.

amiga-news.de tries new ways of financing
The costs for amiga-news.de were covered by banner ads only. Due to the stagnation of the Amiga market it became more and more difficult during the last year to find paying clients for these banner ads.
With Martin Wolf of Eternity
we try from today on a new kind of advertisements. amiga-news.de sets up a banner for a product, in this case 'Tales of Tamar', and for every purchase that was done via this banner amiga-news.de gets a provision.

TTEngine 6.0 and TTManager 1.1
TTEngine 6.0 and TTManager 1.1 have been released. New features:
- Font requester in TTEngine. From user point of view it looks almost the same as ASL font requester that every Amigan is familiar with. The font requester uses data stored in "ttengine.database" file and is an easiest way to use the database with applications. Requester gadgetry is based on GadTools to keep independence of disk-based GUI packages and the look consistent with ASL. Three new functions in the library API have been introduced to handle the requester: TT_AllocRequest(), TT_RequestA() and TT_FreeRequest(). See autodoc file for details. Currently the font requester provides only the basic functionality - font family and size - and will be extended in the future versions in the compatible manner (TT_RequestA() is taglist based much like ASL). A new version of "PlainTest" example program uses the font requester.
- Internal: Cache autooptimisation. TTEngine font cache now modifies its structure in the runtime to minimize cache search time. For example with "PlainTest" example program cache optimization lowers the number of cache search iterations from 15 500 to 6 700.
- Cache size limit. TTEngine 6.0 font cache size is limited and the limit can be adjusted by user. This way you can avoid memory exhaustion even if working with hundreds of TrueType fonts. When the limit is reached TTEngine starts to flush unused fonts from the cache. Read more about this feature in an User's Guide document in the distributuion archive.
- Internal: TTEngine global data acces is arbitrated with semaphores. It eliminates a rare possibility of lockups when multiple applications use TTEngine simultaneously.
- TTManager: The database manager is now aware of cache limit setting saved in the database file.

carries which responsibility for this argument.
In this connection we remind of the fact that Amiga Inc. announced in

REBOL/View on Amiga - new Reblets available
As from now some new Reblets/programs are available in the download area under
the title link, which have all been developed on the Amiga (68k) under
REBOL/View.
Apart form the tool "Web-GetIt!" for downloading complete HTML conforming Web pages, four interesting gamelets (Kniffel-It!, Move-It!, Cascade-It! and
Break-It!) are waiting for you to try them out. The size of each Reblet is less
than 30 kBytes!
Minimum requirements for these programs are an Amiga with 68030/50 MHz processor
as well as the corresponding REBOL/View environment.
Of course the programs can also be used on every other platform under
REBOL/View or REBOL/IOS.

Amiga Inc.: T-Shirt statement
Amiga Inc.'s Web site features a statement on the T-Shirt situation in
conjunction with the Coupon campaign.
This is the statement:
(4-Jan-2003) Amiga Inc. would like to apologise unreservedly for the
delay in getting the T-shirts out. We have received all the orders from
the dealers and no blame should be attached to the dealers for the delay.
There are several reasons for the delay and we are working on trying to
get these remedied as quickly as possible. We hope to have everything
sorted out in the next few weeks.

Amiga .mod remix scene
It seems that many people long to see more remixes of classic Amiga .mod
music. In an attempt to create an Amiga .mod remix scene as have been
achieved in the C64 scene by sites like
remix.kwed.org,
c64audio.com and
remix64.com, I have created a new
Amiga remix specific mailing list at Yahoo Groups.
Let's hope for a growing Amiga remix scene in 2003.

Innovation at amiga-news.de
With the beginning of this month is Sven Drieling not anymore at our services for news and commentation as after 3½ years full of work for amiga-news.de he now wants to attend to his own projects again. For possible problems with the scripts Sven remains, though :).
Very special thanks to Sven for the work he had done.
Up to now Sven had done the Sunday news and had helped in managing the forum and the comments. Besides that he lent a helping hand in cases when I had no time. We have internally discussed several possibilities how to fill this gap respectively how to solve the problem as I really can't and don't like to give up my free Sunday.
On Sundays and public holidays only ANF news
So to take the load off all (the translators, too) a little bit we came to the conclusion that from now on there will be no news investigation and no entering of news from our side on Sundays and public holidays but only releasing news that were entered into the ANF. That means that also news that are sent to us via email will not be released until the next working day.
Help of any kind wanted
On this occasion we'd like to remember our readers that amiga-news.de is a news site from users for users meaning we have to rely on help. Your help could be for example that you enter news that are coming across your way while surfing into the ANF or you enter a good web site you encounter into the ALD. A good help would also be the arranging of payed advertisement banners as these are the basis of the financing of amiga-news.de.
Another possibility to work actively on amiga-news.de is the creation of articles of all kind, for example workshops, experience reports, previews, reviews, exhibition reports and everything else that could interest our readers. The help in translating is also everytime very welcome.
Further suggestions?
We are very interested to hear your suggestions how we could improve amiga-news.de and are eagerly awaiting your hints and proposals.

Programming language: PowerD v0.20 alpha 4
Martin Kuchinka has today released the version 0.20 alpha 4 of the programming language
'PowerD'.
Download: alpha.lzx
What's new with this last alpha release? Well, again several bugfixed,
but there is also one new executable called 'dc_68k', which is the same
as 'dc' except that this executable generates the 68k only code, so it's
only for ppl with older non ppc Amigas. Else it's completely the same as
the 'dc' compiler.
Uploaded the TextInput.mcc modules by Miklos Nemeth.

Retrogame: Missile Command
Today the website of Blackbird celebrates its third birthday. Because of that Blackbird
makes the readers a present with the retrogame 'Missile Command'.
Compared with the original version (made by Michael Rosskopf) Blackbird has added
three different levels of difficulty, a title screen, a screenmode requester and many
minor improvements. For instance it is now always possible to quit the game by pushing
the ESC-key.
The game runs starting from a 30er processor with 2-4 MB FastRAM and graphic card.
Besides this it is UAE-compatible. Under UAE you simply have to choose UAEGFX 640x480x8bit.

USB-card: First snapshots of UltraBUS
For the first time Creative Development shows a few simple snapshots of the first
prototype of its USB-card which many people have already seen at ARC 2002.
You can have a look at the card here.
At the second picture
you can have a more detailed look at the card - you can also recognize the FlashROM as well as
both extension ports.
The final layout will be clearer and possibly more compact but already right now the card
makes a good impression. Creative Development is very buzy while finishing the development
of the card and hopes to report further news soon.

help of a few additional tools it is possible to iconify Workbench screens and to
create connections.
Today version 1.63 has been published. Some new features have been added in this version.
It is now possible to show the name (=title) of the context. A new internal command
has been also added. With its help it is possible to filter the content of WB-listers.
Of course some bugs have been also fixed.

The end of an era - last Aminet CD published
Because most Amiga users have direct access to the Internet now, the bimonthly Aminet CD has become somewhat redundant. As a consequence, the Aminet team has decided to stop distributing CDs. Aminet as a whole is of course not in danger of being shut down, the service offered by the web and FTP servers will remain the same.
The latest (and final) Aminet CD, no. 52 (December 2002), includes the full version of Andreas Kleinert's Superview Productivity Suite II as the highlight. SuperView II reads, writes and/or converts more than 50 graphic formats and also integrates external programs like Xpk, Ghostscipt or MetaView. In addition to converting or displaying graphics (on more than 20 supported graphic cards (via CyberGraphX, Picasso96 or special driver systems)), the program offers more than 30 different effects for picture manipulation.

Foundation Stock Review: What's Changed Since 1st January, 2003 (w. Update)
In a thorough article Foundation Stock Review summarizes what has changed since the 1st of January this year. Starting with
altered highway signs, progressing to the changeover from 0190 to 0900 telephone area codes, and including all the important and interesting
changes.
Update of 2nd January, 2003:
In the same vein as the new 0900 phone service numbers is the following interesting Golem article:
Telecommunications: New Charges for 2003.
Here is an excerpt: 0900 numbers change to the prefix of 0190 after January, 2003. After
the regulatory officials partially approved the new telecommunications charges, they come into effect on the 1st of February, 2003.
Along with that come reductions in urban and German charges, and increases in the monthly base fee for analog T-Net connections.
Immediately after January the phone service will raise the setup charge for T-DSL. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Sascha Brandt (Ancor)
Happy New Year!
Olaf Köbnik of Amiga Arena wishes healthy and successful year 2003 for all! The "flame" will burn in 2003 also and the (Amiga-Arena) year starts with a little surprise.
Interview with Sascha Brandt (Ancor)
Remembering the demos and announcements of adventure games like
"Shadow on Time", "Gilbert Goodmate", "Middle City" or "The last Seal"?
None of these games has been available in a final version yet (and will mostly never) except the last one!
The sci-fi adventure "The last Seal" by Ancor is still under development and early this year there will be a new demo version released. Since 1997 Ancor are developing "The last Seal", after a first playable demo was published it became quiet around this group.
Read within that interview why this has been so and what the current development stage is.

Player: Amiga-Mediaplayer V1 full version
Today Carsten Siegner has finished work on the first version of his player
'Amiga-Mediaplayer' and released this version.
- Multimedia program with transparent GUI (TV, Radio, Mediastreamer)
- Context sensitive (Mediastream, TV, Radio)
- With the help of FroggerNG nearly all formats can be replayed (Mediastream, Video, Audio)
- If you have Amithlon with AmithlonTV installed you can enjoy a transparent TV window. This can then, if the TV card also has a radio tuner, switch to a radio window.
- The TV part gets its TV prefs from TV-Watch.
- The radio part has its own prefs file which can be edited with an editor.
- The radio and TV part have 7 channel buttons each for programs.
This is arranged as in TV-Watch, except no radio settings are taken over from the TV-Watch prefs.
- Furthermore, you can turn on or switch between TV card inputs (VHS1, VHS2, SVHS1), and change audio settings (Stereo, Mono, Channel1, Channel2 and Mute).
- In addition to the seven program buttons, the radio part also has two realtime frequency controllers.
With these you can set the radio tuner frequency.
- The radio part has a frequency display (in MHz) where you can read the tuner's current frequency.
- Changer window for context choice.
- Integrated some shortcuts.
Requirements:
- Amithlon (full functionality)
- Amiga (68k, WOS, PPC, MOS), TV and radio part not activated
- Functioning AmithlonTV 2.07-beta installation (incl. Smear)
- TV card with radio tuner
- Functioning FroggerNG 2.05 installation (with Key)
- Functioning ARexx
- AHI
- For Amithlon: AC97 mixer (or else the Sound card won't be initialised)
Installation:
Just copy (nothing else) the libs appropriate for you system into the "Workbench:Libs" directory. That's it.
The Mediaplayer can then be started directly from the installation directory.
If Fogger is not installed or not installed correctly, an ASL requester appears asking for the Frogger path.
Upon starting the Mediaplayer first searches for system programs like RX etc.
These have to be located in the SYS: directory, otherwise Mediaplayer won't start properly.
After the start of the Mediaplayers the TV window has to be restarted once,
otherwise the audio part of the TV card isn't initialised, and no sound can be heard.
This, however, has to be done only once. On restarts of the Mediaplayer or the TV window the TV card is properly recognised.
Future:
- Audio export of TV and Radio sound into an AIFF file.
Download: Mediaplayer-1.lzx

Alt-WoA 2003: New venue
The organisators of the 'Alt-WoA 2003' have opted for a new venue. Instead of
at the 'Old Corn Mill' in Huddersfield, England, the Alt-WoA will now be held
at the 'Kirkdale Conference Centre'. This is located a mile from the original
venue.
Pictures, a map as well as information about the Centre are
published on the Alt-WoA Web
site.
The reason for the change is the closure of the 'Old Corn Mill' since
mid-November for ca. 22 weeks. And the organisers' insecurity about whether or
not the new owners will offer a suitable space for the event afterwards.
Amiga Inc. and Hyperion have already assured their attendance.
A confirmation from Eyetech is being awaited to then start the preparations.
An exact date has not yet been published on the site.

Game: Payback for GBA - Status Report #3
28th December 2002: James Daniels of Apex Designs
has published the third status report on the GBA port of the game 'Payback'.
The game's frame rate has been increased through optimisations. 15 frames/s were
targetted (matches V-Rally 3's frame rate) and 16 frames/s achieved, whereby
the optimisations for transparency effects haven't yet been added, so an
additional speed increase should be possible.
The other emphasis was on the HUD (Head up display) for showing the
score, the map, the weapons display and the mission briefs.
Instead of using the existing software routines, James Daniels had decided to
use the GBA's hardware sprites.
Though this is quite expensive, it brought with it a performance gain of some
10% compared to the pure software solution.
Additionally bugs have been fixed, so the game is now fully playable in most
levels.
The emphasis for the next months lies on the audio mixer, the sound effects and
the music. Furthermore there might be a chance to start work on the multi
player mode.
The full report is accessible through the title link.
It also contains new screenshots and a short video in MPEG format.

amiga-news.de: Netiquette Revised and Supplemented by FAQ
To clarify the purpose and spirit of amiga-news.de's "netiquette" rules Sven Drieling has completely revised them and expanded on a few
evidentiary points. A new development is the FAQ, which delves into some persistent questions about the proper use of the comment function.
We are asking all of our readers to take a few minutes to read the netiquette document (click on the title link). We are requesting that you
respect our guidelines. Through this we will be able to achieve improved commentary for all concerned. (ps) (Translation: dm)
