USB: SUBWAY available again
E3B has resumed production of the Clockport USB controller SUBWAY due to increased user demand. The first modules from the very limited-lot production run are already available.

In the context of the ROMulus upgrade program we have so far been able to fulfill the high expectations set by us as regards swift processing: every single HIGHWAY sent to E3B for upgrading could be sent back to its owner already on the next day.

Tests and user reviews of our USB products can be found in two current issues of AmigaPlus (05/2003) and Total Amiga (Issue #15).

News in detail can be found on our Website under the heading of "News". (ps) (Translation: cb)

Daniel Miller live from AmiWest 2003 (ANF)

Daniel Miller's Amiwest 2003 Show Report Part II
Before I leave a necessarily critical report of the MorphOS and Pegasos presentation on Saturday morning, I will do the single courtesy of stating that it was a setup-type problem that caused things to go haywire. As the presentation started there was an awkward several moments as the Pegasos which had just been hooked up to the projector failed to cooperate, requiring multiple reboots and typing in the open firmware command line. The presenters were unable to improvise effectively in the absence of stuff on the screen to click on and the presentation limped painfully on for about 15 minutes before ending rather prematurely.

A speaker came energetically up to begin the presentation at first but the problems started when Voyager was clicked on but failed to load. There was a reboot, and then another but the Pegasos wasn't finding the hard-drive or something. There was a lot of feverish typing from different people at the command line but thins just weren't going right. The speaker wasn't improvising very well. Other guys fom the Genesi team were running back and forth to get CDs or check things or fleeing for their lives or who knows what. In all it was less than professional and it's a good thing they presented early in the day so there weren't more people present to witness all the problems. After 10 or 12 minutes of pain the machine was booting MorphOS 1.4 off the CD and Bill Buck himself got up to try to rescue the show. He demonstrated just a couple things, Voyager running a very pretty Flash or Shockwave animation of butterflies and a new "Zoom Feature" of MorphOS in which any little part of the screen may be blown up in a dynamically updated resizable window. You can open a bunch of zoom windows and they all display very quickly. If you set the focus of the zoom window on a video, you see the blown up section of the video displayed in the window just as fast as the video plays. You can magnify to 2 or 4 or 8 or 16 times or whatever and open as many zoom windows as you want.

Bill stated that last week Genesi had obtained Marvell's approval to start using the G-4 in the new Pegasos 2 boards. Stated that he realized that MorphOS needed to be a bit farther along before being marketed to the average computer user. In this case however I felt that MorphOS was working fine. The problems in the presentation didn't have a whole heck of a lot to do with MorphOS. One of the presenters had commented that MorphOS 1.4 wasn't officially released, it was beta, and this was just the public introduction, but what little I saw looked fine to me.

I should mention that it was Nate Downes who appeared to be the one that finally got things going off the boot-CD. This presentation didn't go well at all, we'll see how they do on Sunday.

The OS4 demo on Saturday: this was a wonderfully executed presentation. Ray Zarling, graybearded Doctor of Matematics and long time Amiga believer conducted it, showing several Workbenchrelated features like window gradients, opaque window movement and right mouse click menus. Dr. Zarling was clearly a big Amiga fan, stating that "I waited 12 years to see the new OS. We can all see that it is real. I just can't wait for it to be finished."

The window gradient feature had a lot of options and the user can also set the thickness of the window title bars and so on. He showed the opaque window movement, moving the windows very slowly to make the effect look good. If you move the windows quickly I think you would see unsightly updates. As Dr. Zarling pointed out, that is because this is on a 200 MHz PPC and might not be a problem on a 800 MHz processor. Dr. Zarling stressed that configurability was a key part of OS4. He stated that there much of the upper level stuff (like Workbench) which runs emulated now will be rewritten for the shipping version of OS4. He stated that "OS4 is the official Amiga PPC OS."

He stated that what we were seeing did not use the 68K processor at all, it was all on the PPC. In question and answers after, I asked him to tell us about the machine running the demo. He stated that it was an Amiga 4000, I think he said with Cyberstorm PPC card. I asked about the use of the 68K processor and he said it was not being used at all except during the boot process to load up OS4 PPC..He stated that a brave owner could physically yank out the 68K processor after OS4 loaded and OS4 would continue to work, but he did not demonstrate this capability.

This presentation was conducted toward the back of the convention hall at the stand of Computer Connection where Amga Ones were for sale.

One of the best illustrations of te spirit of the Amiga community at Amiwest was the "Mr. Zoil" booth, where Glenn Fuller demonstrated the Amiga work of his son Ben, who died in 2002. Ben Fuller was known mainly for Project D, a disk coper, backup program and multipurpose tool which had some success during the Amiga's heyday in the late eightes and early nineties. Mr. Fuller stated that the last known version of Project D was from 1994. He said that Ben went on to do work on other computer systems but never gave up on what he considered "the Amiga vision."

Mr. Fuller explained that he and Ben attended Amiga conventions as a father and son activity, and he came to enjoy them very much. He said that if this were to be the last Amiwest owing to fading interest, he wanted to be here. But I told him what the event organizers told me, that things were going better than last year and interest seemed to be increasing, so it should not be a worry that ths is the last.

This will probably be my last report, because I am losing hotel Internet access at noon. I should touch on a few things, here and there. First, Mr. Hardware came all the way from New York City to sell Amiga wares. It was a brilliant move because they turned out to be the only all-around vendor here, and they are doing a lot of business. Umm, it was great of Jens Schönfeld and Ben Hermans and Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco to come all the way from Europe to support the show. Although I was critical of Saturday's Pegasos presentation I should point out that the Pegsasos stand is getting a lot of visitors, and people really enjoy sitting down and using MorphOS and playing BirdieShoot and Quake and Software Tycoon. The Super Bundle has been released and I got my free copy (thanks). Unfortunately I will have to wait until I get home in 8 or 9 days to see what all is on this three CD set.

Everyone seems to get along very well at these conventions, in spite of the online flaming that we see so much of. Bill Buck sat next to Ben Hermans at the panel last night and said how coexistence was possible even when there was no cooperation, unfortunately the two men didn't hug. ;)

The banquet was delicious and the Sacramento Amiga user group SACC really did a fine job of everything. I would like to thank those who edited and translated my reports, I would do this myself but the connection and software here at the hotel is not really suited for smooth work. There is another Amiga Show next month, a minishow at Computerfest in Dayton Ohio next month and we have something coming up in Washington DC area in October. These shows are a lot of fun and I recommend interested people to come check them out. Tschüss! (ps)

amigaFoulEggs - a new Tetrislike game has been finished
In time for the summer break the game 'amigaFoulEggs' Version 1.0 has been completed! amigaFoulEggs is a tetrislike game in which at least four tokens of the same colour have to lie beside or on top one another in order for them to get removed. The window size is freely customizable. The tokens size adjusts to available space.

Extensive settings allow the customization to your own preferences: keyboard mapping, speed, colours, patterns for tokens and background and more are possible. The more tokens are removed in one go but also systematic putting down of formations gain extra points.

There is also a Highscore file in the Internet.

amigaFoulEggs requires AmigaOS 3.0; Settings and highscore windows require OS 3.5. A graphics card is recommended. An extensive guide desciption in German is included. There is an English catalog file for the program. It has been tested with Classic Amiga, Amithlon and WinUAE. The game also works flawlessly under to upcoming AmigaOS 4.0.

The game is freeware and is available at no cost on demand. Simply fill out the application form and shortly after the lha archive arrives in your e-mail inbox. (ps) (Translation: cb)

Daniel Miller live from AmiWest (ANF)

Daniel Miller's AmiWest 2003 Show Report Part I
This is the Sacramento's 5th Amiwest, but my first. I used frequent flyer miles to get a free flight to San Francisco, from there I took trains through scenic northern California to Sacramento where I took a taxi to the Holiday Inn. On Monday I rent a car and head to Reno, later Yosemite, but for now the Amiga scene is on my mind. This is supposed to be the biggest Amiga-oriented convention in the USA but we'll see what Nova Design and Genesi pull off in Washington DC this October.

Right now it's Amiwest in Sacramento. I arrive late on Friday. In front of me in the line at the hotel check-in desk is John Harris, the author of the arcade classic Frogger. Looking around further I see that two medium halls have been reserved for Amiwest. The halls open on each other to make a larger. There is a smaller enclosed room also reserved, maybe that is the banquet hall.

It's late on Friday and the show has not opened, but there are people still setting up. There are four Pegasoses on a long table. Nate Downes, one of Genesi's reps from Florida, works feverishly on a fifth. He says he's tired but he's determined to get ImageFX successfully set up for Kermit Woodall of Nova Design to demonstrate.

I see some other familiar faces. Someone points out Ben Hermans of Hyperion Entertainment to me, which is a surprise. He hadn't announced his appearance. Maybe we will finally see OS4 on the Amiga One as opposd to an Amiga 4000. Or maybe not.. I hear that Jens Schönfeld, famed Amiga hardware maker is here, and Jeri Elsorth, Commodore One engineer and geek fantasy girl arrives in the morning.

There is an historical sequence of old Amiga models on tables throughout the room. The event organizers want to illustrate the past, and the future. There's a 3000 and a 600. The machines and their peripherals are yellowing and stained from age. There might be a crack here and there. It has been a long time since these rolled off the manufacturing lines.

At the hotel nightclub it's Big Band Night. Three couples gyrate kinetically on the dance floor as a six piece brass and sax ensemble, drummer, and bassist accompany a xylophonist. It's jazz and swing and the singer joins in as the happy music rushes out the bar entrance into the hotel lobby.

The next morning at break fast I run into John Harris again. Overnight I remmbered that he wrote not only Frogger, but also Jawbreaker for the Atari 8bit, one of the greatest games ever for that line of computers. I tell him how great it was, with the toothbrush animation and all and he tels me a bit of the history behind it. Jawbreaker! He explains that he will give the first seminar this morning on his current focus: Amiga DE.

John Harris gave the first presentation. He talked about his work on Amiga DE. He demonstrated his Gobbler game, his WordSearch game, his calculator program and his Solitaire, spnding a particular amount of time showing the versatility of his Solitaire, which runs in different resolutions depending on the handheld unit. On DE itself he joked that the original concept of "runs anywhere now means runs nowhere" owing to failed business deals and runtime modules whch have not materialized for the various handheld devices. But he still loves the technology of DE and thinks it will eventually be successful it's "just taking a little longer than they thought."

His calculator program is advanced, and he talked about how valuable the cooperation was between hm and the math professor who helped him write it. Asked whether DE stuff would ever run on a Palm Pilot he said a Palm Pilot version was unlikely since Tao stuff doesn't run on 68K processors. He said it might happen on the new Palm Pilots running on ARM processors.

To be continued ... (ps)

AmigaOS4.0 to be demonstrated at AmiWest
July 25, 2003 - Amiga Inc, in conjunction with Hyperion Entertainment and Computer Connection of California will be demonstrating the current state of AmigaOS 4.0 at the up-and-coming Amiga show in Sacramento, California. Please read the complete PR here or under the title link.

AmigaOS4.0 to be demonstrated at AmiWest
July 25, 2003 - Amiga Inc, in conjunction with Hyperion Entertainment and Computer Connection of California will be demonstrating the current state of AmigaOS4.0 at the up-and-coming Amiga show in Sacramento, California.

Louie Dituri of Computer Connection, an Amiga dealer since 1988, will demonstrate AmigaOS4.0 running natively on a Cyberstorm PPC A4000. A lot of progress has been made in moving 68k modules to PPC-native since the end of the European AmigaOS on Tour roadshow as well as the default look evolving still further.

Computer Connection have also donated an AmigaOne as a raffle prize and, additionally, will be demonstrating AmigaOnes running Linux.

A representative of Hyperion Entertainment, the project manager for AmigaOS4.0, will be on hand to answer questions on the product. In addition, John Harris, a renowned AmigaDE developer (and the creator of the classic Frogger and Jawbreaker games), will be present at the Computer Connection stand to show off a variety of AmigaDE applications.

We urge all Amigans attending the show to flock to the Computer Connection stand and see the future of the Amiga Platform. No rumours, no spin, no hype, just the real deal!

Amiga Arena: AmiATLAS call
Certainly many users have been worried that one of the maps of AmiATLAS did not contain a desired destination, location or attraction or even had incorrect information?!

But this never has been a real problem! In AmiATLAS you can add or change your own completions. Something like that you will not find at PC route planners.

But would it not be better if all users could use your changes and if you could use the changes made by other users? Therefore here is a call to all new or old users of AmiATLAS:

Please report your wishes what you miss in the maps or what should be changed because it is incorrect. Information to locations or attractions are also very welcome. We are glad about all useful emails which you please send to support@amiatlas.net.

For all useful and used information there will be a little surprise. Thanks to all Amiga users for the help!

Summer events with individual Computers
"No summer break this year!" While our office in Aachen is closed from July 24th until August 18th, there are several Amiga- and classic computing related events during the time.

It's startig with Amiwest in Sacramento, California this weekend. This is a show of long tradition that has been taking place for many years. This year we attend the show as exhibitors for the first time. In the past years, we have only exhibited at the Amiga show in St. Louis in the midwest of the USA.

On the same weekend, the computer-party Little Computer People takes place in Sweden. It's organized by C64-fans for C64-fans, and we're supporting it with some prizes. The current state of development of the C-One is shown, and our netowrking card "RR-Net" is demonstrated to a larger audience for the first time. It's also going to be for sale!

The height of the season is the Classic Gaming Expo 2003 in Las Vegas on August 9th and 10th. We're also exhibiting at this show for the first time. At the expo for classic computer games and arcade machines, names like Atari, Activision, Vectrex, Intellivision and of course Commodore are revived. The guest list contains big names like Paul Norman, David Crane and Garry Kitchen. (ps)

Geizkragen community letter reports about Tales of Tamar
Here the according extract from the Geizkragen community letter:

»[..c..] Becoming tester and get an online strategy game for free... A tip for fantasy fans, no doubt. Currently only for Amiga users in autumn there will come a PC version of the online strategy game "Tales of Tamar" to the shops. All important game options are included in the PC version of the game already, but to get the game as bugfree as possible there are still game testers required. As player you will get a small Middle Age country assigned which should be enlarged by clever usage of strategy, diplomacy or even war. In one game there can be a maximum of 12000 players. To download the game free of charge you have to register the form at the Tamar homepage. Further information and registering here

The Geizkragen community has more than 413000 users, among them some will most likely check out the game in the next weeks. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Commodore Billboard double-CD available
Starting today, the double-CD with the contents of the Commodore Billboard is available. The second CD contains a recent mirror of the CBM-Funet archive, which is maintained by Marko Mäkelä. It also contains files that were removed from the archive lately. Many thanks again to Marko who has mastered the second CD.

Nearly all files of the double-CD can be downloaded for free on the Internet under www.commodorebillboard.de and www.funet.fi/pub/cbm.

Running websites of this scale costs a lot of money. All profits of the CDs will be used to run the websites with their high volume traffic.

We encourage our customers to copy the CDs, and to make them available in sharing-services. All this will help us in reducing the cost of the websites. Those who want to donate to the websites can buy the double-CD for about 15,- EUR from our retail partners.

The Commodore Billboard is created from user contributions. Everyone who contributed so far gets the double-CD for the price of shipment. Distribution of the free CDs is done by Stefan "Galaktus" Zelazny, the new webmaster of the Commodore Billboard. Please contact him via eMail if you want such a free CD. New contributions are also rewarded with a free CD!

A picture of the final CDs is available online. (nba)

X68000 Emulator PPC 0.00b21, Carbonized for Mac OS X
The X68000 was an impressive Japanese home computer system that was released in 1987. It featured a 68000 processor running at 10MHz, and supported up to 12 MB of main memory. It also had very impressive multimedia capabilities for the time, with a 65536 color palette and an 8-voice stereo FM synthesizer.

X68000 Emulator PPC is currently the only X68000 emulator available for the Macintosh. It is in very early stages of development, but it appears that it can run Gradius and Fantasy Zone to some degree, which is certainly impressive. An important thing to note is that the program and home page are entirely in Japanese, which makes it difficult for English-speakers to enjoy it. Also note that the application is compressed in LZH format, which is quite uncommon for most Macintosh programs, but Stuffit Expander seems capable of handling it; you may need to expand the files multiple times to get the program to work, however. Poseidon licencing ceasing on 01-Aug-03
Chris Hodges (Poseidon author) writes:
»Due to reasons I will not explain here further (ask me in private), Poseidon keyfiles cannot be bought after 01-Aug-03. People having just bought an USB card, that does not come with an OEM Licence, have the chance to register Poseidon until the end of this month.

Support for existing users is NOT affected and will continue as usually.

It is recommended that dealers stop selling USB cards without licence to avoid angry customers buying an useless piece of hardware, until the vendor delivers his own software solution or the situation is solved somehow.«

Im Klartext heißt das, dass die Software Poseidon von Chris Hodges natürlich weiterentwickelt wird, aber bis auf weiteres nur noch Karten mit OEM-Lizenz unterstützt werden. (ps)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 15
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 15 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) amif1team: How about support for Russian and Ukrainian Amiga users? Do you support the Russian Amiga dealer 'Amiga Line' or do you have any other future plans to sell AmigaOne hardware in Russia and the Ukraine?

Fleecy: We have Russian and Ukranian language drivers in AmigaOS4.0 and although the Russian team seems to have disbanded, we have been told another is being formed.

The new Amiga Power Platform website will provide a forum for Amiga users and we will work with the ATO to make sure that it supports languages other than English. Our aim is to be able to work with local groups and dealers since they know their areas and markets far better than we do.

We are happy to sell AmigaOS and Amiga certified hardware such as the AmigaOne anywhere. The dealer you mention can send me a private email and I will try to get him/her set up.

2) Mojo-kun: AmigaOS needs modern applications. There is lots of very good free software which could be ported to AmigaOS if it had POSIX compatibility and some common GUI toolkits such as QT, GTK+ or GNU Step. What do you think of this and is an effort being made to support these technologies?

Fleecy: A great platform needs great applications. Our aim is to support and encourage the development of new applications on our platform so that we start to develop a unique and appealing software base that offers something over the other platforms.

Having said that, new applications take time and resources. AmigaOS4.0 will start off with a lot of older Amiga Generation 1 applications that are emulated, most of which are in serious need of updating. To increase the amount of AmigaOS4 specific software we have been looking closely at what is needed and what can be moved quickly from other platforms, such as Windows and Linux.

A strategy is underway to make such porting easier but, at the same time, we have to be careful not to turn AmigaOS4 into something else. POSIX, for example was created for very specific reasons, reasons that don't map one hundred percent onto the AmigaOS.

3) Turbo: According to the original Amiga One Zico Specification, several AmigaDE friendly processor types were to be supported. Are there still plans for a future Amiga OS to support x86? Is the future replacement for Amiga OS4.x coded on top of intent or is this going to be rehashed to run exclusively on a 64bit G5?

Fleecy: Our plan is still to make AmigaOS5 processor agnostic so eventually it will run on x86 but this is some time off, and would mark the completion of the Amiga Generation 2 project.

It will not be built on top of Intent. Intent will reside within the AmigaOS as a service, providing Amiga Anywhere and Java support.

The 64 bit AmigaOS implementation has always been a target, since we will be able to implement orthogonal persistence much more easily than on a 32 bit platform. There are still a lot of issues to sort out first however.

4) Yellow: I have Party Pack. I'm planning to buy AmigaOne with the latest AmigaOS perhaps after a year. Can I safely assume that I will get the $100 refund then? Does it matter what kind of AmigaOne model I buy; if there someday exists an AmigaOne model that uses 64-bit PPC processor, can one get the refund for buying that?

Fleecy: The voucher scheme is refundable against an AmigaOne (which is the Amiga certified Eyetech board and an OEM copy of AmigaOS that runs natively on it) so if you buy it a year after it comes out, then yes, you can claim the refund. The exact mechanism is still being discussed between ourselves and participating dealers but it will have to be in place before AmigaOS4.0 ships.

I don't see why it can't be used against a 64 bit Amiga but that is some time off.

5) alx: If you went back in time to before the A1/OS4 project began, what things would you have done differently and why?

Fleecy: I'd have put $1000 on the winner of the Grand National and I wouldn't have wasted $10 to see The Phantom Menace ;-)

With hindsight, we'd have started the AmigaOS4.0 project straight away, running it in parallel with the AmigaDE project. I also wouldn't have wasted 9 months trying to bring the various factions together for the sake of unity.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though.

6) Samurai_Crow: What affect does Tao Group's release of Intent 2 have on the AmigaDE platform and the general plans for the future?

Fleecy: As with every revision of Intent, we assess it, move the AmigaDE code to it and then help the developers to move their content to it. We are both committed to creating a better and better product set and seeing both Intent and the AmigaDE and its content on more devices and in more markets.

7) Agafaster: Can we have a PPC Linux version of Amiga DE? Pretty please?

Fleecy: The first version of the AmigaDE on PPC will be for AmigaOS4. This has been stated publicly from the very beginning - AmigaOS first, then OS X and then any other opportunities that make business sense.

8) Asemoon: Some time ago Amiga's CEO demonstrated AmigaDE's 2D scaling abilities for TechTV. When available for AmigaOS will the users be able to open AmigaDE software in seperate user defined screenmodes? (Screens various resolutions, instead of just running on the desktop as demonstrated on Windows/Linux)

Fleecy: Yes.

9) Asemoon: The AmigaOne-lite is said to become an entry-level Amiga solution. Are there any plans for an A1200/A500-style or similar custom case for housing the AmigaOne-lite motherboard?

Fleecy: There are plans yes but plans aren't products until you can buy them. A few third parties have also contacted us about creating their own case designs so expect to see quite a bit of choice.

10) unclecurio: In a previous Q&A, you mentioned you were looking at the way Apple had used the audio units system in OSX. Can you tell us a little more about how the Amiga solution might operate?

Fleecy: The AG2 audio solution actually started life way back when the AmigaDE was going to replace AmigaOS, quite some time before the OS X audio system became public knowledge. Reading the Core Audio documentation made us smile quite a bit.

Once we decided that AmigaDE and AmigaOS would address different markets, this solution was retargeted at the AmigaOS.

The AG2 audio project uses elements called 'streamers' which are similar to Core Audio's 'audio units'. They can perform filter-like tasks like effect processing, format conversion, stream encoding/decoding, mixing or I/O related tasks like streaming a file from/to disk or network.

To make a distinction between streamers of different applications, streamers belong to a certain 'Audio Context'. Of course there can be communication and data flow between several contexts, so the audio output of one application (for example a software sampler) can be routed to the input of another application (for instance, a multi-track program).

There will be specific higher-level streamers to accomodate for games, to make use of DSP's for example, without the need for the programmer to program them directly. The goals of the architecture are to make use of multi-channel audio, DSP's, multiple CPU's, etc. when they are available and to make sure a lowest possible level of latency can be acquired by means of a Quality of Service system.

AmithlonTV (Website)

TV card driver: AmithlonTV Beta-Version 347
Today Guido Mersmann has released the beta version 347 of the TV card driver software AmithlonTV with several minor updates and improvements.

Download: AmithlonTVBeta.lha

Changes:
  • FEATURE: Added the missing "external" hardware type. This type is useful when creating non supported hardware or non hardware sources like frogger.
  • FEATURE: New tv card "PowerColor MTV878" supported. Thanks to Harald Frank for sending me the card.
  • FEATURE: Most of the card can use a second (!!) VHS (FBAS/Composite) input just by updating AmithlonTV. If you ever wished to have a second composite insteed of the SVHS (S-Video) input, then your dreams come true. Now you get both! All you need is a special VHS->S-VHS input cable to successfully connect your input signal. Most graphic boards with TV-Out are providing such cable. Beside the fact the chinch is male (use a chinch gender changer) this cable may not work. Mine has input/output connected, so it works in both directions. Just give it a try before wasting money.
NOTE: Giftware means sending me a gift not considering AmithlonTV as a gift!
  • FEATURE: Invented a remote control standard and wrote the first driver for the "PowerColor MTV878". Using a remote is so cool! For the next AmithlonTV presentation I need a remote control. (-8.
NOTE: If you are waiting for a version which supports your card, then you may wait forever. Make a TVCardDump and sent it in. In the most cases the card is running within minutes.
  • CHANGED: I did many small changes to the drivers and the library core.

Genesi: Statement on Pegasos II/III and company strategy
SuperBundle Sunday! :-D

Good work Targhan!

In honor of the eve of the first SuperBundle Sunday we will just post this message here!

Why the Dell not?!

1. We started with the Pegasos by attracting smart computer users. We have found that "Geeks" who are creative and innovative work miracles. Just have a look at the weekly releases and activities report here and on the other sites. Further, by promoting the Pegasos as a multiple OS machine we opened ourselves to even broader based attention. Many special computer people appreciate this and are developing a number of very interesting applications for the Pegasos. The Summer Promotion and the Betatester Blowout were part of that strategy. Of course, the SuperBundle is too. The idea is to build a "Community" of active, enthusiastic users who have an interest in advancing the platform. Now that we have Pegasos machines in 34 countries, well over 200 MorphOS developers registered at MDC, and a framework for third-party and alternate OS involvement through Phoenix, we can begin to consider the next steps.

2. As mentioned before, we will do our best to take advantage of the Linux wave. We are definitely poised to do that here in Europe. We are positioning the platform as a non-west-coast-USA product. That has a broad appeal here. Look at the recent success of SuSE in Munich. Things are changing. For example, by the end of 2005, the French Government has mandated that no Windows OS can be used by any local government. In Spain, there is an even broader Linux move afoot. There is definitely an opportunity coming. Outside of Europe, a couple of weeks ago at the Developing World Conference hosted by the World Bank and the UN, one of the key issues/conclusions was that building an IT infrastructure based on Linux was key toward the establishment of stable societies in Africa. Worldwide, the "education" market will also be big. Enough about that.

3. We hope to have QNX running fully on the Pegasos soon. It is partially working already. We expect to see a commercial package later this year and hope the good folks at QNX will fully support our developing relationship. This addresses the embedded market.

4. In the meanwhile, MorphOS continues to improve. Have you visited http://mdc.morphos.net lately? We are definitely creating a community there. :-) We also have a third party developer site picking up some steam at www.phinixi.com. The foundation for the future is being set.

5. This brings us to the whole Pegasos II/G4 discussion. To serve the markets mentioned above we need to have a dual approach. First, we need a basic system and second we need a "Geek" machine -- a SuperGeekTweak if you will. The Pegasos II G3 will sufficiently provide the gist for all the "basic" market capability we need. Can the G4 do the rest? Last week we decided it could not. The incremental difference in performance and efficiency did not warrant the investment we had intended to make. Frankly, the G4 works and we will make some, but the investment required does not correspond to the performance gained. This is why we let the information slip into the thread about the Pegasos III and the 970. With the 970 we can see the potential.

The information above highlights our ongoing, generally known intentions. As we do not have the overhead of a big company, it is not terribly difficult to do all that. Plus, our costs are further lower because we own or control everything internally (IP, production, etc.).

Now, what remains the ultimate objective? Why are we doing all of this?

Please remember, we have always said that first and foremost the Pegasos is a development platform. The ultimate target is the digital terrestrial/satellite television STB market. "Target" here means potential customers. Do not confuse what we want to offer them with what they have today. This is not a SetPal box (for those in the UK) -- it is MUCH more. We will offer two tiers -- basic (receiver plus a little extra functionality) and Super (bundled with a broadband ISP connection and ALOT of extra functionality). The market here in Europe is estimated by more than a few sources at over $2.5 billion in the next four to five years. MorphOS is "lite" and can lower our memory and comparative CPU costs against the competition. We do not pay royalties for its use either. Further, please notice that the PPC is the state of the art in this market space. We expect our first BIG customer to travel with us to IBM in Ny to help us negotiate CPU prices down for vo lumes over 1 million units. This STB WILL BE a computer and in fact could also be at the higher end the home server that is connected 24/7 and uses WIFI to communicate with everything in the "digital home." We really are talking about something revolutionary. It is not just a STB; it is a whole new kind of computer that integrates many different sources of data into one focal point for distribution on demand and as required. It really is something new.

#1 Rule of Marketing: offer people what they have already, just give them something better, more convenient, improve their life, etc.

We hope the Community we are gathering here can understand the potential we are discussing. One day not too far away analogue television signals will cease. The transition to digital will be fast in commercial terms. Everyone will need a receiver. The DVB standard has been broadly accepted in Europe and like GSM was to mobile telephones vis-à-vis the rest of the world, DVB will provide the same opportunity to this market here in Europe first (Australia and NZ too ;-) ).

The Pegasos as a computer will continue to march ahead, but the business plan in Genesi's future is about a multi-functional device that uses the internet and digital television signals to open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Now having said all that, a word about Press Releases and "professional" business behavior. We are accused of not be "professional" and even being "childish" by some of our more stern tormenters. We think they miss the point. What we are doing here is trying to build a broad and interesting mix of people that despite their different languages and cultures they share a common interest in the future we are trying to create. We cannot build a comfortable participative environment if we are not involved ourselves. This is not a "business" yet. We do not make money on the Pegasos or MorphOS. There are no profits. We do not need to hide behind Press Releases. We are here mucking around just like everyone else! We are not a public company. We are trying to cultivate something different. All the effort so far is still about creating something, which is why we feel like we need to be present and involved in mailing lists and Forums, and w hy we do our best to answer the emails we receive. This is also why we freely communicate our difficulties. We want to "share" the creative process with as many of you who want to be involved. We are not following a strict execution plan. We are following a light not a railroad track.

For example, here is the latest challenge -- as of today, Marvell will not even certify their own G4 development board. They are expected to. We have been expecting them to do so for a few months. They have not. What to do? Now if we are all in this together, you will consider the actions we are taking to be quite admirable. If on the other hand your intentions are not constructive (why are you reading this?), you might have another reaction...

Thomas and Gerald of bplan with the full knowledge and understanding of Marvell will remove the G3 from a Marvell development board and replace it with a G4. We will do the northbridge testing ourselves. We are pretty proud of their ability to do that...:-) That means we will still have the Pegasos II ready in September. Nevertheless, we will sell it in exactly the same manner we did the Betatester machines in September 2002. Our focus will be developers and interested users with a bigger focus on other Operating Systems. In the meanwhile, the STB project marches along. You can see the prototype at the new bplan offices in Oberursel if you call ahead.

The SuperBundle and the Pegasos I G4 will be our focus at AmiWest and we look forward to participating. We just thought we would share a few thoughts beforehand to make the whole thing a bit more interesting. And yes, we have made more than a few of the G4 Pegasos I. We will showing them at AmiWest and getting these out after the Show.

Sincerely,
Raquel and Bill (ps) (Translation: cb)

AmigaWest Update - July 19, 2003
Welcome to AmiWest 2003! This is another opportunity for the the Amiga community and the rest of the world to see AmigaOS 4.0 demonstrated for the first time. That is correct, Amiga Operating System Version 4.0, along with the AmigaOne hardware, is a giant step forward for Amiga users.

I look forward to hearing or reading your thoughts and opinions on these products. We are very pleased with the progress and believe that you will like the demonstration at AmiWest and further enjoy the AmigaOS 4 experience once the product is released.

Regrettably, my plans have changed and I will not be attending AmiWest this year. I have informed the organizers of AmiWest and they were very understanding. However, in my absence, Amiga will be well-represented at the event.

I hope that you all enjoy AmiWest. I will miss being there, as AmiWest holds a very special place in my heart in regard to my affiliation with Amiga and the community. I wish you all a very enjoyable time in Sacramento.

God Bless,

stormamiga.lib for SAS/C is Freeware
From now on Matthias Henze has released stormamiga.lib for SAS/C as Freeware. If there will be further updates in future he still cannot say.

Informationen to the "stormamiga.lib"
  • The "stormamiga.lib" is a linker library for StormC and SAS/C.
  • The StormC version is a replacement for all 68k linker libraries of StormC, the "amiga.lib" and the startupcode "startup.o". Besides this many other functions and features are offered.
  • The SAS/C version is only partly a replacement for the linker libraries of SAS/C. For the first time there is a linker library for SAS/C for the MC68060, too. But also the slow linker library "scm040.lib" is partly replaced by a faster version for the MC68040.
  • The "stormamiga.lib" is fully written in assembler to achieve the maximum speed.

Amiga Arena: 5 Anniversary Preview
Amiga Arena - The fire still burns
 5 Anniversary preview

In 1998 "Amiga Arena" has been founded in order to support the Amiga Freeware and Shareware market. Beginning with a link list at the end of 1998 Amiga Arena developed to a good place for Shareware special actions. By this concept several Shareware special actions could become possible. During the time interviews (over 100 now) and the release of registered Shareware programs were added as new features.

I could make possible all these things with the help of the developers and of all active users of print and online magazines and news sites. Thank you to all these people (have a look at the hall of fame) and all these ones who I have not mentioned but who supported me, too.

Because of this event I will tell you the history of the last five years and will also add screenshots. But that is not all! During the "Amiga Arena anniversary weeks" there will be several actions with many developers and companies. With the help of the list of participants you may imagine what things you can expect.

The summer will be hot - the fire still burns!

File Manager: DiskMaster Version 2.5.23
Rudolph Riedel has released version 2.5.23 of his file manager and put it up for download (title link) on his homepage.

This time there's a version compiled with GCC as well as a version compiled for Amithlon. Owing to the Amithlon license Rudolph Riedel could not test the latter.

The most important changes in brief:

2.5.23 (2003-07-17) 74096 Bytes
  • New version numbering - the next full version will be 2.6.
  • Many little changes have been made to DM2, in order to make it compliable with GCC, VBCC and GCC for Amithlon -> portability.
  • IRQ Server has been replaced with timer.device code -> portability.
  • Mistake correcting.
Rudolph Riedel: "I allowed myself to issue a call for donations on the Internet. I would love to support the AmigaOS in the future, but my A1200 is really not suited for this anymore and I really don't have the spare cash for a better Amiga. I guess I have more motivation than credit..." (ps) (Translation: dm)

The Legacy (Website)

The Legacy: Game Museum News
The Legacy is a game museum for C64, Amiga, Atari, PC, Schneider/Amstrad CPC, in which the readers provide screenshots, cover scans and information about the developers. On the news page, the Legacy team has announced the following:

Next we draw your attention to a new game titled "Eve Online - The Second Genesis." Here is a review in which you may get an idea of how in-depth the game is, and how it is played.

Further, DoM of Team Legacy explains: "In the meantime there are two sorts of updates. A master update, which has broadened into more than 600 games, and an incremental update. The latter is to accomodate everyday-type changes.

Our regular guests certainly have noticed by now that support has been slow new steps: Betatesters can already use all the new functions. All other visitors can use some of them. In the background I'm working under intense pressure on new functions which will move some functions into the live database, including email notifications when something is taken over." Poll about the 3D map for Tales of Tamar started
Some days ago Eternity gave a status update of Tales of Tamar and pointed to the planned 3D map (Snapshot). Within the comments there were surprisingly little feedback about this map. To give Eternity the possiblity to get an overview about the interest on such a map we started a poll regarding that map.

Please vote only if you bought ToT already or if you will buy it definitely (maybe if there is such a 3D map). Thereforeso: Please don't hesitate to vote because for a programmer nothing is worse than ignoring his work. (ps) (Translation: ub)

individual Computers: Retro Replay sold out
Retro Replay is a clone of the popular Action Replay for the C64. The cartridge was made in October 2001 at a very limited quantity, which is sold out now.

The last cartridge from the mass-production and an early prototype from March 2001 are now offered in an eBay-auction. Since the announcement of RR-net, a networking card for the Retro Replay, we had strong demand for the cartridge, and many people asked for a new production run. Unfortunately, the cost, and therefore the risk, is very high, because we'd have to produce several hundred cartridges in order to keep the price of 50,- EUR. Therefore, the interest in the auction will determine if a new production run will happen: As announced in the product description, we're sponsoring the "Retro Replay Party", it will take place in September this year. Details will be published shortly, but we can already say that there will be plenty of free beer. Nice detail of the party location: It's an air-raid shelter from World War II, which has no windows. Neither 2000, nor XP ;-). (nba)

Mercury News: Start-up's goal: run software on any chip
The article is about the company "Transitive" which apparently has developed a very fast (70% native speed) and lightweight (600 KB) "on-the-fly" binary code translator which shall make it possible to run software on any processor architecture.

Recently an unknown "big partner" is claimed to have been found, who apparently is pumping vast amounts of money into the company. (ps) (Translation: cb)

AntiSPAM2 update released
All AntiSPAM2 users are asked to download the newest version from the server under the title link. Older AntiSPAM versions including the beta versions currently in circulation contain a bug which may cause a crash when encountering incorrect form headers.

Apart from this bug fix the new version contains some small detail improvements. Thus, beside some improvements in the query routines, you can now set the position of the start window.

In order to curb the growing data flood there will be a conversion of the matching function in the forseeable future. (nba) (Translation: cb)

As announced on MorphOS-News.de, the Workbench replacement Scalos is being ported to MorphOS. Ambient stays the standard GUI of course - but, as Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco wrote in a corresponding comment, variety is the spice of life.

Scalos' feature list comprises a.o.t. full Multitasking (every window has its own task), icons becoming transparent when drawn over something they can be applied to with drag&drop, stretching, splitting and centering of backgrounds, iconification of drawer icons as well as a plugin system for replacing or adding new features. Amiga Inc.: Rumours about the return of Jim Collas denied
The latest issue of UK's print magazine Total Amiga claims that there are rumours about a new CEO at Amiga Inc. The "Buzz Word" rumour column, where an anonymous insider reveils that latest "industry" rumours, the following statement can be found (quoted with permission):

"Buzz Word has heard that Amiga are about to get a new CEO but it won't be Garry Hare; apparently the whole Genesi/ Garry Hare story was a setup designed to produce confusion. The new CEO is a man who will bring many millions of investment dollars back into the company. The Man's name? Jim Collas."

Asked if this is a joke, Robert Willaims, editor of Total Amiga, assured us that he "honestly doesn't know whether the rumour about Jim Collas is true or not".

Thus we contacted Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga Inc. and asked for a short statement. Bill writes:

"It is just a joke, and I agree a good one. I found it to be pretty funny. I also thought that it was funny that they stated that Garry Hare was replaced by Jim, when I have not even been replaced yet ;-)

I am still CEO, and still enjoying the ride." (ps)

DiaCD - Transfer of ARexx to Hollywood 1.5
Carsten Siegner writes:
Today I have created the first alpha version of DiaCD with Hollywood 1.5. With this, I wanted to show just how powerful Hollywood has become.

During the entry of a picture listing in the upper requester all pictures are at once graphically shown in a picture list. One may then use the slider beneath the picture list to scroll through all the pictures in realtime. At the same time a larger version of the currently selected picture is shown separately in a subwindow. When you press the left mouse button and move the cursor on the picture list, you select the first picture that you're going to work on later. Similarly, you select the final picture with the right mouse button. These pictures are expressly scrolled through in realtime, when you move the mouse back and forth. The picture under the cursor then appears in the selection window.

This is just a demo of the further capabilities of the program. I will then compile it for 68k and MorphOS. (ps) (Translation: dm)

individual Computers: Show report: AAA 2003, Commodore Billboard back online
This weekend, the Amiga Alpe Adria 2003 took place in Udine, Italy - another station of Amiga OS4 on tour. The show was organized by Cloanto, well-known for a lot of Amiga programs and the emulator "Amiga Forever". Jürgen Schober of Point Design had to make two OS4 presentations, because the room was totally overcrowded with more than 100 Amiga fans and journalists of daily press and computer magazines. We also had the chance to show our products in a 30-minute presentation. Best-seller of the present retailers Soft 3 and Virtual Works was the Catweasel MK3, that became the first choice accessory for many Amiga One owners because of it's high degree of integration into the hard- and software of the new Amiga.

A small Retro-computing museum right at the entrance of the showroom brought back joyful memories in the visitors. Rare items like an SX-64 in best shape, a VIC-20 rev.1, and even a C65 prototype were shown. One of the first multi-computer games (today's networking games) was shown on two PET computers that were connected through the serial ports. The home computer pioneer Altair 8800 from 1975 was the only none-Commodore computer.

The "Video Microwave", a Pegasos-board that was built in the case of a Sharp Microwave oven, was - at best - good for a laugh. The keyboard did not work at all, and it only took a few mouseclicks to make the computer with the MorphOS operating system crash. The reason for this could not be found in the short time of the show.

Commodore Billboard back online

Our good news for the fans of Commodore nostalgia almost got lost in the excitement surrounding Amiga OS4: The Commodore Billboard is back online! The initiator of the project, Søren Ladegaard (Denmark) had to drop the project due to lack of time in January 2003, and transferred the website to individual Computers. We're now sponsoring the website that can cause a lot of traffic with it's several hundred megabytes in size. During the past half year, the new webmaster Stefan Zelazny has converted the audio and video files to mpeg and mp3, so the website can be viewed on most platforms. For example, the Realplayer is not necessary any more.

Currently, the website is available under the address www.commodorebillboard.de. The .com domain will be made available in the coming weeks.
If you're interested in a local copy of the website, you can support us in paying for the high cost of the website by ordering the CD. It will be available in August this year from all our retail partners for about 15,- EUR. The double-CD package also contains some surprises for Commodore-fans! (ps)

Music: Access Virus MIDI commands for tracks&fields 0.7
I updated my virus OS to OS6.0. So there was time to fix this package to support new commands or new values for the old ones. This don't mean that the package is full now as I don't know every piece they changed. It lacks also off controlling the new function called Pure tuning. This one is only controllable from the virus menu.

The changes:
PageA: Bankselect updated. Support for more banks overwritten the demo.
PageB: Arpegiattor. More patterns to choose from.
PageC: Partbankselect and Partbankchange for the new banks.

That's all. Why do I update this package? Because of still using T&F until HDRec is finished. Then I will make all commands for HDRec. (nba) (Translation: cb)

AmigaWorld (ANF)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 14
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 14 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) ssolie: With the services based approach you are proposing, will an application be expected to query capabilities or will AmigaOS automatically adapt to the hardware itself or some hybrid of the two? Depending on the application, some may not appreciate having to query the OS every time they want to do something versus letting the OS adapt itself to the application and hardware environment.

Fleecy: In all multi component systems there will always be a per component capability and requirement set. Traditional static systems work on assumption which tends to give them superior performance as long as those assumptions are always true. In the world of today, we have a huge level of dynamism - smartphones, PDAs, consoles, tablets, desktops, servers, fat pipes, thin pipes, hardware acceleration, processor speed, screen size, input controls etc and you are faced with the problem of how to map these from the physical domain into the digital domain.

A service based architecture doesn't really affect this in implimentation since it is just a model. For example I could query the graphics service to find out if it supplies a vector service and if it does then I can chose to use it or not. This can be done dynamically by the application or can be done at install time, which is no different from the situation now where, if you assume that MUI is installed, and it isn't then your application won't work.

Thus you will still have different options as a developer - you can make use of services which themselves adapt on your behalf or you can do that yourselves. In either case, there is always going to be the same question, where does the responsibility lie? We want to offer choice so that the developer can make those decisions. A good example is the Ami2D scaling services of the AmigaDE. Some people use them and some people prefer to create resolution dependent graphic sets.

What is needed is a further level of abstraction, so that capabilities and requirements are managed transparently and that is coming on board now with such things as vectorisation and other descriptive formats that allow for interpretation based upon semantic information. That is something we are looking at but the more abstraction you have, the more resources are required to translate between the physical and digital domains.

Swings and roundabouts I'm afraid.

2) CodeSmith: Apple have made a big splash with their announcement of PPC970 "G5" systems. Is there going to be a "zico-2" spec for Amiga PPC970 systems, or are you giving vendors full control? any idea when we can expect PPC 970 Amigas (other than "after OS4.0")?

Fleecy: We do plan on having a 64 bit version of the AmigaOS but that is someway down the line. If a vendor approaches us with the necessary hardware then we will consider revising our timetable but we still have a lot of work to do for the 32 bit PPC AmigaOS4, such as actually releasing AmigaOS4.0. There are also a few interesting other 32 bit opportunities coming up that will have to weighed against a 64 bit desktop machine.

3) Quixote: Since AmigaOS4.0 will be on the CyberStormPPC first, I wonder whether it will include an update to the CyberStorm's FlashROM, that would permit booting from the CD? I understand that it was a feature intended for the CyberStorm, but it doesn't seem to work.

Fleecy: We do not intend to touch the CSPPC flashrom. Its internals are proprietary and besides, we are relying on it to bring the HW up first before AmigaOS4.0 takes over. Any changes we made might also damage the users ability to boot into AmigaOS3 as well.

If you have problems with the CSPPC Flashrom, perhaps an email to those who worked on it might reveal why it doesn't work or get them to add that functionality.

4) Miffy: I run AmigaDE on my desktop ( the one I am typing on now ) which has software on it that I have ported, that others have ported and the like. It runs the partypack update. What I want to know is how long before the next publically available ( non NDA ) update comes along from Amiga given I cannot get permission to enter into a new NDA with Amiga Inc right now ( because of company regulations and Im sure others are in this position too )?

Fleecy: We are reworking our NDA policy to make it consistent with industry practices for software licensing. In the meanwhile if special circumstances prevent you from agreeing to the licensing terms, you can contact us directly to determine how best we can meet your needs. Send an email to support@amiga.com.

5) Asemoon: I very much like the idea of being able to use animated GIFs as icons on the desktop with the introduction of Amiga OS3.9 and so will this feature stay available or maybe be enhanced/altered in any way for AmigaOS4? And will there be support for 24bit PNG format icons in the future?

Fleecy: The source code for that particular feature is in the hands of H&P and we do not have access to it.

The Amiga graphics architecture has reached the end of its useful life. Actually, it reached it about five years ago but has been brought back, jiggled, enhanced and hacked to stop the platform from dying. The screenshots you are seeing as part of the AmigaOS4.0 on Tour roadshow represent hopefully the last AmigaOS release that uses this architecture and their quality is a reflection of both the strength of the original architecture and the ingenuity and persistence of the developers since then who have worked on it.

As part of the Amiga Generation 2 project (AG2), we are currently working on a brand new visual domain replacement which we hope to deploy either in AmigaOS4.1 or AmigaOS4.2. This will build from the hardware upwards and be able to support high quality existing interface models as well as allow for brand new features, functionality and models. We are particularly eager to introduce the Reactive Presentation Agents (RPAs) that we developed for the AmigaDE which would provide the same functionality, and a lot more besides.

6) Asemoon: What languages will AmigaOS4 support out of the box?

Fleecy: We are supporting many languages, which are listed below, using a combination of the excellent ATO and private individuals, working in teams of two or more to produce each catalog. We do have a few offers where we just have one person (Icelandic and Malay) but we would like to have at least two people, since it is a lot of work. Anyone interested in helping out should send a mail to os4-betatest@hyperion-entertainment.com with the subject line of 'Localisation offer of help'.

Bosnian
Catalan
Czech
Danish
Dutch
Finnish
French
Galician
German
Greek
Hungarian
Italian
Norwegian
Polish
Portuguese
Serbian
Slovenian
Spanish
Swedish
Turkish

That's 20 languages for now.

The Russian ATO team disbanded but new people will soon be joining. I think we can count them as well.

This is a list of language drivers for which there are no catalogs currently in progress.

Albanian
Belarusian
Bulgarian
Croatian
Esperanto
Estonian
Faroese
Icelandic
Irish
Latvian
Lithuanian
Maltese
Portuguese-brazil
Romanian
Slovak
Ukrainian

If you are missing a language that can be written from left to right in an ISO-8859-X charset just ask Detlef at TetiSoft@apg.lahn.de if he can create a language driver for it.

7) Asemoon: The support for non-Latin fonts like for instance Arabic/Persian and Chinese/Japanese characters were not well documented for previous AmigaOS releases. How will such characters and languages be handled by future AmigaOS and AmigaDE releases?

Fleecy: Not well documented is too optimistic :) It was documented that the Amiga character set is ECMA-94 Latin1 (thats ISO-8859-1), that the bullet.library API uses Unicode (16bit only), and it was defined a font attribute FPF_REVPATH for writing from right to left. There was no official statement from H&P how their special localizations for e.g. czech or russian would fit into this framework (in fact they did not). There was a statement that the Euro update is only an intermediate solution.

OS4 bullet API was improved and allows 32bit Unicode now, 16bit are not enough since Unicode 3.2 (current is 4.0).

OS4 diskfont.library now contains a character set database, it does know the MIME charset name of each font in the system, and the Unicode code point of each glyph. However the bitmap fonts handled by diskfont.library are still limited to 8bit charsets, so for Chinese/Japanese/Persian/Georgian etc you'll have to use bullet API. With the new diskfont API you can however ask for e.g. Times in ISO-8859-5 (cyrillic), -6 (arabic), -7 (greek), -8 (hebrew), -11 (thai) or -16 (eastern european latin with Euro) and it will create it on-the-fly from e.g. a truetype font.

With OS4 locale.library the user is able to change the current system default charset on-the-fly by selecting a different language driver. The charset of each catalog file in the system is known, there exist charset conversion functions that ensure that e.g. for polish with ISO-8859-2 system default charset any polish catalog file will be displayed correct, it does not matter if its in ISO-8859-2, -16 or in the special ATO charset used in OS3.9 polish localization. Its also possible to use catalog files in UTF-8.

Most text handling and output functions in OS4 are not able to write from right to left, so there still exist large problems with arabic/persian and hebrew, an application that reverses arabic and hebrew strings before output can at least display its GUI but for text input (cursor on the right after return) special applications would be needed.

Summary: OS3.x language support was limited to western european latin languages, OS4.0 language support is limited to latin, cyrillic and greek (thai would eventually work if someone could fit thai glyphs into topaz/8 and topaz/9 default ROM fonts). OS4.0 font support is limited to any 8bit MIME charset in diskfont API (besides the right-to-left problem) and not limited in bullet API.

8) _Steve_: Will there be support for the pre-existing PPC programs from both PUP/WOS in OS4?

Fleecy: We'll provide an application launcher that can launch WarpUp programs, maybe even PowerUp. However, we'll not include any hacks to make this work. Since there was only a small number of applications created that used these two systems, we are hopefully that their authors will upgrade their programs and release AmigaOS4.0 native versions.

9) Billsey: From past personal experience I know that there are dedicated Christians at Amiga, Inc. I have friends there, and I am not turning against them, but they are Christian, so I believe that the following question(s) must be asked. I would like to know what role that faith has played (a) in keeping the company alive; (b) in walking the path that has been walked; and (c) when specific confession and, more importantly, repentance of “mistakes made” will be observable.

Fleecy: Religion, like any other philosophy seller is an individual concern, not something that should ever be part of heterogenous system, whether a group, a company, a nation or a species. I always find it ironic that nature, the mother of us all preaches diversity and yet humans are obsessed with monotony, to the point of coercion, persecution, discrimination and destruction.

With that in mind, I cannot and will not answer your question, because such things should be on individual level interaction. In other words, if you want an answer, send the question to the individuals themselves.

10) drstrange: what form of support will OS4 take for a 250MB ZIP? Will it use harddrive-like formatting or a mountfile and if a mountfile could you show us it ahead of time to give a few of us time to prep our disks.

Fleecy: Same as OS3.9 (or 3.1): it's a removable media, 'Removable' and 'Rigid Disk Block' are mutually exclusive, you should use a mountfile.

To be able to use RDBs on removable media as well all file systems would have to support unmounting. The new FFS2 does support it, but there are file systems which don't, for example SFS.

Some 3rd party devices do allow RDBs to be used on removable media, but that's a hack, it's not possible to implement it in clean way and therefore it will not be added to AmigaOS4.0 devices.

Music: Liquid Skies records #044
Yesterday the scene group Liquid Skies published its 44th music pack. This time it contains a music piece called "Walking The Corridors" by the English musician Darkus who, though not being a member of the group, still offers his track as a guest under the label Liquid Skies. It is a rather experimental piece of music and would probably fit best under the category of Trance. This time the cover was created by DaFreak.

Next some more information about the track:
  • Title: Walking The Corridors
  • Artist: Darkus
  • Style: Experimental Trance
  • Playing time: 5:05
  • Format: mp3 (128 kbps)
The zipped file with a size of about 4.8 MB is freely available for download on the homepage under the title link. (ps) (Translation: cb)

OnyxSoft: New and updated software
Here comes 1 new release and 4 updates, enjoy!

New:
  • Program: NewWBPattern (Version 1.0)
Info: This is small tool to change the WB-background on-the-fly.

Updates:
  • Program: GummiSurf (Version 1.2)
Info: Now supports the built-in download managers in all Amiga browsers (IBrowse, Voyager & AWeb)
Can export HTML and plain text-lists.
  • Program: MultiRen (Version 1.54)
Info: * Added a function to the Adaptor tool so that is possible to control what character the Adaptor should put the lengthener character around when prolonging a filename.
    * Now the filename length also displays the length of the file comment (which cannot be more than 80 characters in AmigaDOS). The format is now <filename_length;comment_length> in the window. Also, the file comment gets /italic/ in the main lister if it exceeds 79 characters.
    * Added the operator %t for use in the text export and file comment generation tools. This stands for tab. Whenever a %t is encountered a tab stop is set there which gets determind by the longest string up to the %t. Many %t's can be used in an export string. This way very nice columnized text files and file comments can be produced!
    * The memo list handling (in the RenPlacer, File Comment and Text Export tools) now saves the memo lists immediately when stored or removed if the checkmark in prefs is set. This makes it easier to not forget to save then when quitting the proram :)
    * Updated the ID3-Tag plugin so that it always returns two digits for the track number. F.ex. 01,02,03...10,11,etc instead of 1,2,3...10,11 which makes it look nicer.
  • Program: QuickSketch (Version 1.01)
Info: * The move draw area qualifiers Shift and Alt has now been reduced to only work with RightShift and RightAlt.
    * Because move has been restricted to Right Shift and Alt it is now possible to use the LAlt+LAmiga+Cursor to draw a straight line.
    * + More fixes...
  • Program: TheMPegEncGUI (Version 2.3)
Info: * Now it's possible to import CDDB/ACDB-files automatically into the ID3-tags on files in the file list! (Yes I know it's not full automatic CDDB-support but it's one step in the right direction anyway:)) This means that you have to use CDDB or ACDB to download the descriptions for your CD's, then you can import these text-files in TheMPegEncGUI.
    * Now also includes OggDec and OggPlay (ogg123) support.
    * + More fixes...

Warp Datatypes V45.2 Released (Update)
After a long delay, the promised updates to all the Warp picture datatypes for 68k, WarpOS and MorphOS are finally here. To accompany the new release is the brand new WarpDT portal at http://www.warpdt.co.uk/ where you can keep up to date with the latest versions of the WarpDTs and download them all in one easy place.

Summary of changes since previous versions:

BMP/JPEG/PNG/TIFF: Minor optimizations and cleanups.
BMP/JPEG/PNG/TIFF: Bumped version to v45 since a stable release has now been reached and to reflect the jump to shareware status

BMP: Fixed problems with decoding bitfield images

JPEG: Altered descriptor file to prevent it matching LhA or LZX archives containing JPEG files (or anything else that might contain a JFIF header, other than Photoshop files)

PNG: PNG files not containing enough data are no longer treated as a fatal error. Now the part of the image that was successfully decoded is returned.
PNG: Updated with libpng 1.2.5

PNG/TIFF: Updated with zlib 1.1.4

TIFF: Now correctly converts images using the YCbCr colourspace to RGB
TIFF: Added support for JPEG decompression
TIFF: Updated to libtiff 3.6.0-beta2, including a new version of the LogLuv decoder, and numerous other bugfixes

Prefs: Various parts of code rewritten, in preparation for losing the current reliance on resource.library
Prefs: Minor bugfixes
Prefs: Correct Polish and Portuguese documentation now included.

Update 06.07.2003:
Errornous timeouts bugfix (Version 45.2)
Unfortunately, due to last minute changes, I broke the timeout code slightly - doh! This resulted in the datatypes producing timeout warnings unnecessarily. Fixed versions of all 5 datatypes now in version 45.2 available. Apologies for any confusion caused. (nba)

I have heard of some people that the new free server (frac.dk) which I use is not as fast as desired. I ask for your patience and your insight because I can use this server as a guest for free. I myself could not find out these problems and therefore I suppose that the problem of speed happens only few times e.g. if much traffic is caused. Please have another attempt to a different time if this happens. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Tomorrow: Amiga Alpe Adria 2003 in Udine, Italy
For the last time the website of the Amiga Alpe Adria 2003 which will take place tomorrow in Udine, Italy has been updated. The list of the presentations has been updated as well as the list of the hardware and software which can be seen.

This week the organizer got the offer to exhibit a Commodore PET 4016 which is connected with a PET 3008. Of course this offer was accepted. Besides this a Commodore 65 (a prototype which was never released) will be shown.

In Austria Jürgen Schober is busy with the last preparations for the AmigaOS 4.0 presentation while in Germany Jens Schönfeld prepares himself for the C-One presentation. Genesi has made a PowerPC Pegasos with MorphOS which was installed in a microwave available.

Many people from all over the world have booked for and are on the way. We hope we see us. You are welcome! (ps) (Translation: dr)

Grasshopper LLC Lowers PageStream Prices
The American software company Grasshopper has lowered the price of their desktop publishing application "PageStream." The full version is now available for 99 US dollars. Upgrades are now 40 US dollars. These prices are good for July, 2003 but may stay the same thereafter, if possible.

New Low Pricing
Tuesday, July 1st - Grasshopper LLC announces today new low pricing for PageStream on all platforms. "While the pricing is guaranteed only through July, it is hoped that it will be warmly embraced by the community and will be adopted then as our new permanent pricing", said owner Marna Holt today. "Our move from a brick and mortar business means lower costs and faster turn around times. We hope passing these savings on to our customers will not only increase the already tremendous value our customers get when buying PageStream, but hopefully increase the number of customers and reach those who could previously not afford PageStream." Near term plans include a revamped web site, instant messaging with our sales staff, and a monthly online public chat with Deron. PageStream now lists for $99 (from $299!!) and upgrades start out at only $40. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Adventure Rendezvous: Interview with Ken Williams
The adventure-game focused online magazine "Adventure-Treff" has published an interesting German-language interview with Ken Williams by Jan Schneider. In 1979 Ken Williams founded Sierra On-Line and after that he led the firm for almost 20 years. Ken and his wife Roberta originated the game genre now referred to as graphic adventures, and they were responsible for many of the best and most loved adventures of all time, like for instance the Leisure Suit Larry and King's Quest and Space Quest series. Mummert Consulting (E-Mail)

Study: Online Shops Battle Trust Deficit
Around 50% of German websurfers avoid purchasing anything on the Internet. The main problem for most of them: they can't examine and test the products before buying. And very third person gets by without online purchases because they are satisfied with the goods of "real" stores.

The fear of someone stealing their personal data is another factor that stops surfers from buying. About 30% name this fear as a reason for why they have yet to purchase anything online. And every fifth person is worried that his bill will be incorrectly calculated and so he doesn't buy anything. These figures come from a current study "Internet Statistics of Consumers (IZV6)" done by the University of Karlsruhe and Mummert Consulting.

Online shops battle a trust deficit: Half of all German websurfers don't buy anything on the Internet. The principal reason for this, according to these surfers, is that they can't test the wares over the Internet. Every fourth purchase avoider doesn't trust the online stores because it might be hard to complain and return things. Almost every third fears for the protection of his data. The market share of online shoppers may rise if e-shops improve their service. About 28% don't buy online, because help and service aren't good enough.

It's easier for well known web-shops to win customers: about two thirds of online shoppers do most of their shopping by known merchants. Every fifth buys *exclusively* by known shops. And the general experience of Internet users with the Internet influences their purchasing attitude: the less experienced the surfer, the less he goes online shopping. Experienced users purchase 20% more stuff on the Internet than the unexperienced. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Genesi: Explanation of G4 Card Difficulties
According to a statement of the Genesi leadership on MorphOS-News.de there's a hardware problem which means that less G4 cards will be produced for the Pegasos I, and even these will only be offered with corresponding boards as "matched sets." With respect to the complete utilization of the Altivec functionality of the G4: some boards work flawlessly, some boards not so well, at least not well enough to be sold.

In other Genesi news, QNX and Pascal have joined the effort to be ported to Pegasos. The latter is still popular in Eastern Europe and the former is the #1 embedded system OS.

Additionally Genesi would like to sell Linux Pegasoses with the G3 for a price of 499 euros at MicroWarehouse or other merchants (without monitor but with Linux as well as MorphOS). Up to 25,000 units monthly may be produced on the fabrication lines at DCE. This price per unit might fall with an inverse correlation to the quantity of units (as more are produced, price per unit drops). The same thing applies if IBM comes to view it as a good strategy to help Genesi by doing the same with respect to CPU price. These machines will be available in October of this year.

As before, Pegasos I owners can upgrade for the price of 200 euros, but you've got to send in the board as well as the CPU card. (ps) (Translation: dm)

AmiZilla progress report
After DiscreetFX had announced that there is a money booty for porting the web browser Mozilla to the Amiga (as reported) and Bill Panagouleas set up an information site about the donation efforts, he sent us the following progress report:
  • Current Booty: $4122.45
  • New! SourceForge website setup to share/update codebase for AmiZilla port.
  • New! Offical URL for AmiZilla
  • Mailinglist now has over 162 members and over 240 messages, most are about programming and porting Mozilla.
  • AmiZilla website has gotten over 1 million hits since appearing on the famous unix geek website slashdot.
  • AmiZilla continues to gather positive press for the Amiga and MorphOS by being covered on mainstream websites like CNET's news.com, mozillazine.org and many others.
  • Amiga Inc. representative Fleecy Moss has commented they like AmiZilla but will not contribute to the Initiative because a port is also underway for MorphOS.
  • New! AmiZilla poster "I Want You" by Eric Schwartz available in two sizes for webmasters that want to promote AmiZilla on their site.
  • New! AmiZilla Banner designed by Luca Ferraris.
  • New! Female Russian artist hired to create mascot for MorphOS version of Mozilla port.
  • New! Genesi and Phoenix Developer Consortium have been watching the project with great interest for some time. and may contribute funds.
Keep in mind that the AmiZilla Project needs you to be successful. The booty is now over $4122, which is a impressive amount of money for an Amiga project. If only one programmer was working on the port this would be a nice reward. However several programmers are working together. Once the money is split among coders the booty is not big enough. Please contribute if you can, every dollar helps motivate programmers to make the AmiZilla Project a success. After the release of AmiZilla more projects are being developed like Hot CoCo (JVM) and F Gordon (Flash). The development and launch of these add-ons to AmiZilla depend on the success of that project. Paypal donations can be sent in via this weblink.

About AmiZilla
The goal of the AmiZilla effort is to raise such an obscene/huge amount of money to give away to the first programmer/team that can port Mozilla to Amiga/Compatible systems that programmers will be falling over themselves getting this application coded in record time.

Pictures from Amiga Show in Maarssen, NL
Martin Heine was nice enough to provide us with some meaningful pictures from the Amiga Show which took place yesterday in Maarssen in Holland. The photos were taken by Ron van Herk.

The event was well attended with more than 100 visitors. Genesi presented the Video Microwave, the prototype of an STB case already known from the CeBIT and of course the Pegasos with MorphOS in action. On four Pegasos computers as well as an Debian equipped AmigaOne the visitors could form their own impression of the current state of the two systems. Furthermore beta versions of Bars'n'Pipes and FotoFoto for MorphOS were shown. The possibility to buy Pegasos boards at the ComputerCity stall was also made use of. Furthermore the Access was shown as well as Amiga merchandising goods such as the game "Amiopoly", Amiga antenna balls for cars and mugs and T-Shirts from the OS4 tour.
