The Phoenix Platform Consortium
A number of well known persons has assembled in this consortium, to give help and suggestions for the development of a reference platform for the Amiga users wanting to upgrade their Amiga. The goal of this group is taking the responsibility for this platform.
The Phoenix Platform Consortium will therefore take over the responsibility to give Amiga users and developers help and recommendations for reference platforms.
This will not bring about a "new" Amiga, but the road is set for a platform honoring the Amiga feeling. The member list is truly impressive and promising. (ps)

new Project: IMP - Amiga as Open Source
Volker Mohr writes:
Some days ago, when Jim Collas (was made) left, I suggested to find a sollution saving the Amiga plattform as Open Source, even if the people at Gateway have different opinions of the future, or worse still, none at all.
My original suggestion was using CHRP as hardware basis for new computers, simply because being independant from a single manufacturer of hardware. As OS, a specially modified and expanded version of an Open Source OS (Linux or a BSD) could be employed.
Aside from criticism, I recieved much more support, have been contacted and mailed if I mean it seriously and how it could be done.
A team has slowly emerged, which started a project with the preliminary title "Project IMP" (Independent Multimedia Platform). First ideas and plans have been collected by me in recent days, and released at the title link.
If you want to participate, have own ideas etc. please contact me. Since we only have a chance if we make it public, I decided to to so after talking to two other team members. I think it's about time to take our favourite computer's fate into our own hands, and save what can be saved :-( more ... (ps)

new Version akMPEG Player 3.00
It's not only extremely fast now, but also quite compact: the 8 players (4x68k, 4xPPC) have been merged into now only 2 remaining executeables, which brings the archive size down to only ~120 KB. Looping now is possible as well.
There also shouldn't be (m)any bugs left ;) Download: akMPEG2.lha (ps)

Version Watch Offline... for duration?
I am frustrated. I am angry. I feel really sick about the ongoings - or lack thereof - at Amiga Inc.
And I don't see any sense in investing considerable amounts of time in this Amiga-related project right now. The Version Watch will be down until further notice. The only Amiga-related activity I will currently maintain is my work at amiga-news.de. If things brighten up at Amiga Inc., I will reestablish the Version Watch.
If not, I might turn this into a Linux service. Perhaps. Maybe.
Damn, they really killed me with this one. :-( more ... (ps)

Amiga Aktuell

Is the AmigaNG coming or not?
In his Amiga Aktuell Special, Carsten Schröder writes:
So far, the article from Businessweek Online, which drew so much attention recently, has neither been confirmed nor denied officially. Several sources, however, indicate that an official statement by AMIGA is planned for this Tuesday. Meanwhile, Stuart Walker of the programmer team Digital Images, which already has announced games for the Amiga MCC, is cited by a Gateway employee: "I am going to wait until we hear some news from within Amiga. I was told that the AmigaMCC was definitely going ahead". Shortly after Jim Collas resigning as AMIGA President and CEO, Digital Images had canceled Amiga MCC game development, only to take back this descission a short time afterwards.
Bottom line, confusion is perfect. We will have to wait until Tuesday, to recieve clarification (at best) about the AmigaNG future. (ps)

Press Release by AudioLabs: NL-editing system for Amiga and DraCo
From: AudioLabs info@audiolabs.it
To: Petra Struck petra.struck@online-club.de
Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 16:43:10 +0100
Subject: Press Release

Press Release

DATE: 09-Sep-99
TOPIC: NL-editing system for Amiga and DraCo
CONTACT: info@audiolabs.it

AudioLabs (http://www.audiolabs.it) is proud to announce ProStationAudio,
the ultimate NL-editing software for AmigaOS-based systems.

Featuring timeline visual editing, region-based audio management,
realtime DSP effects, faders automation, studio-quality digital mixing,
ProStationAudio is the largest audio project in development for the
AmigaOS.

ProStationAudio v2 Demo is available for downloading at the AudioLabs web
sites. North America residents can take advantage of the local web server
at http://usa.audiolabs.it for faster downloads.

[FEATURES]

- Import/export audio from/to any platform. Exchange audio files with
industry standard platforms including Windows, MacOS, Unix or
dedicated hardware (DraCo, NewTek Toaster/Flyer, AD516/Studio16).

- Internet friendly: MPEG layer 1, 2 and 3 (the popular MP3) import,
Java ulaw import/export. Import multiple MP3 files, overlap them
on the timeline to create automatic crossfades, add realtime effects
such as EQ and stereo field expansion, then master to CDDA, all with
  ProStationAudio.

- Hard-disk based non linear editing. Work with audio recordings up to
2GB each, regardless the amount of RAM memory installed. Disk streaming.
Instant random access to any location.

- Non destructive editing. Trim, cut, fade, crossfade audio recordings
without affecting the original takes. Instantaneous operations
  regardless the file size.

- Region-based editing. Any fragment of audio is accessible from an
alpha-sorted list, managed by the application. Any fragment generated
by cutting, bouncing, recording, gets automatically named and sorted.
Let ProStationAudio take care of your most complex projects.

- Visual approach. Build your projects managing visual audio blocks.
Examine on-screen waveforms to create perfect edits. Each block can
be distorted manually to create fades and trim its boundaries. Blocks
can be dropped over blocks to create crossfades (or to have them
automatically align in various ways). Multilayer graphics: objects,
  waveforms, fades/xfades, automation.

- Extensive set of tools for positioning and aligning objects, ranges
and the cursor. Accurate spotting to SMPTE locations, at sub-frame
resolution. Tools for DJs such as shifting and scaling ranges. The
intelligent Magic Wand tool lets you create perfect loops in a
  fraction of a second, automatically.

- Automotion (tm), the automation engine. Create the perfect mix while
letting the software remember all of your moves. Automation tracks
can be graphically edited in the timeline window or recorded in
realtime by grabbing the faders during playback.

- Realtime design. Operate on faders, pans, effects parameters, even
the virtual tape speed, always in realtime, to tune up your mix on
the fly or create dynamics effects. These dynamic effects can
optionally be recorded to disk, again in realtime, while playing.

- Advanced auditioning. Fast-forward and slow-motion during playback.
Realtime time stretching. The auditioning signal can be digitally
  recorded to disk in realtime.

- ALPS architecture for audio DSP plugins: unlimited expansion
possibilities. Multiple DSP inserts allow to apply different DSP
effects to each track, in realtime. Multiple master DSP inserts
  (post-fader processing).

- ALPS plugins: freely accessible modules for realtime DSP operations.
Downloadable from the web site. Include dynamic compression,
several EQ modules, spatial processing, ducking, delays, ...
  http://www.audiolabs.it/plugins

- Hi-end hardware support: ProStationAudio takes advantage of 1 or 2
CPUs, 1 or 2 video monitors, 1 or 2 graphic cards. Add value to
  your hardware investments.

- Hi-quality graphic interface, scalable, font-sensitive, supporting
up to 1600x1280 on two different monitors. Shaded look, includes
gadgetry (pots, switches,...) scanned from real gear. Supports also
a dual screen display on a single monitor.

Sid4Amiga

Sid4Amiga version 3
After author Paul Heams has lost all source codes for his C64 Sidplayer due to a physical failure of his hard drive, he sat down and restarted with the original code from the Linuxpage, showing once again the importance of backups ;-).
After all, the new Sidplayer is faster, has some bugs removed, and the AHI play routines are now functional. The author further writes that he nevertheless has much work left to do, since he also has to rewrite the complete GUI. (ps)

Is the Microsoft Console coming?
Spiegel Netzwelt writes:
According to rumors, Microsoft is currently working on its own game console, which is reported to be similar powerful than Sonys announced PlayStation 2.
The software company Microsoft is reportedly working on a game console code-named "X-Box". The TV expansion is meant mainly for games, but could have other functionality, too, reported US game magazine Next Generation in its October issue, citing unnamed sources.
According to this article, the console will either run on a 500 MHz chip by Intel or an Athlon chip by AMD, with gfx technology provided by nVidia. As operating system, a modified version of Microsoft's Portable-System Windows CE will be employed. With this setup, the Microsoft console might be comparable in performance to Sonys announced Playstation 2, the article sais. As manufacturer for the Microsoft-designed console, Dell and Gateway might be possible partners. (Full article - German - at the title link).

Amiga

Thomas J. Schmidt in Executive Update
Dear Amigans:

I wanted to make sure everyone knew that Jim Collas has chosen to leave Amiga to pursue
other interests and opportunities. I would like to personally thank Jim for the leadership
and vision he brought to Amiga and the entire Amiga community over the past eight
months. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.

I have been with Amiga since April of this year as the Chief Operating Officer and I
continue to be extremely excited about the plans and strategies we have been working very
hard on the past several months. Those plans will continue with a great business and
technology leadership team focused on the emerging Internet Appliance market space. As
we finalize our plans in this area, we will communicate those to the community.

I would also like to thank Bill McEwen for his many contributions to the Amiga community
and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Bill has been a steady and calming
voice to the community.

Regards,

Thomas J. Schmidt
President
