Adventure: Geo's Quest - "There Be Cows"
The announced sequel "There Be Cows" to Paul Golian's graphic adventure "Geo's Quest" is now available. The final chapter is dedicated to the time after Escom, i.e. Gateway and beyond - new characters thus include Boss Cow Waitt, Bill Morphdog Buck and his Genesi gang, McEwen & Moss and many more.

To conclude his six years of work, the author has announced that he will make all three games (with appropriate compromises) run on 1 MB Amigas and adapt the graphics of Geo's Quest 2: "In Search of Queen Lorraine" to the level of those in the two following parts. The corresponding version, "GQ2 Enhanced", is scheduled for release at the end of the year. (snx)

Games That Weren't

Amiga Games That Weren't: The Blues Brothers - Jukebox Adventure
In 1991, the platform game The Blues Brothers was also released for the Amiga. As reported on the website "Games That Weren't", Joystick magazine published a full review of the sequel, "The Blues Brothers: Jukebox Adventure", in 1994, but the game was never released for the Amiga.

Denis Lechevalier has now provided the website with an extremely rare preview of the game. According to Lechevalier, he found a copy in a set of floppy disks on eBay. Titus had released it in an extremely limited edition and sent it to magazines at the time. This means that some levels are available to play, as well as some music. (dr)

Programming: Assembler development environment ASMotor 1.3.3
ASMotor is a portable and generic assembler engine and development system, consisting of a number of ISA specific assemblers, the librarian and the linker. The package can be used as either a cross or native development system.

Output formats include Amiga linker objects and Amiga executables (amiga-news.de reported). Version 1.3.3 has now been released with the following changes:

Assembler
  • Improved error message sort order.
  • Allow BANK with scope symbols.
  • Out of range constants will no longer early fail assembly.
  • Fixed dependency file might end up with date later than main output file, causing unnecessary rebuilds with make.
  • Improved paths in generated dependency file.
  • String interpolation would sometimes fail in rare cases.
  • GROUP directive would generate a syntax error.
  • BANK is now resolved properly when writing binary file.
  • Section size tracking in the assembler is redundant and has been removed. This enables >64 KiB sections with 8-bit processors.
  • Fix size of RS structures when last entries have no symbol name.
680x0
  • Amiga HUNK_EXT hunk could be written incorrectly in some circumstances.

Command line audio player: QoaPlay 0.7 (update)
The relatively new "Quite OK Audio Format" (QOA) is a lossy audio compression format: audio signals (44100hz, stereo) are encoded at 278 kbits/s, exactly 1/5 of the bits required for an uncompressed WAV file. Following on from the QoaToAiff decoder (amiga-news.de reported), Grzegorz Kraszewski has now released a player called QoaPlay (source code on Codeberg) for the Amiga 40 Tools Jam 2025.

According to the developer, the following hardware requirements should be met for real-time playback:
  • 68030@25 for Stereo 44,1 kHz.
  • 68020@25 for Stereo 22,05 kHz oder Mono 44,1 kHz.
  • 68020@14 or 68000@33 for Mono 22,05 kHz.
Currently, QoaPlay uses audio.device for 8-bit playback and does not check the maximum sample rate. This can result in distortion, for example, when playing a 44.1 kHz file on an Amiga in PAL mode. Automatic halving of the sample rate will be implemented later. A 16-bit AHI output mode is planned.

Update: (04:33, 08.10.25, dr)

Version 0.7 is now available: QoaPlay now performs the announced automatic halving of the sampling rate if the QOA file has a sampling rate above 27 kHz.eist. (dr)

Blog: Working with the Amiga's RAM and RAD disks
In his latest blog entry, Carl Svensson pays tribute to the Amiga's RAM and RAD disk and recalls that the latter was used, for example, for the pinball game Slam Tilt: Since there would be too little RAM left after the Workbench had been fully loaded when starting from the hard disk on an unexpanded Amiga 1200, the latter is avoided by performing a minimalistic restart of the computer. File transfer via MIDI: AmigaMidiRec
AmigaMidiRec uses any available MIDI adapters and cables to transfer files from modern computers to the Amiga. The transfer speed is limited by the MIDI standard; the author specifies a duration of 15 minutes for the transfer of a 1.6 MB file. Although Workbench 1.3 is supported, the Amiga used must have more RAM than the size of the file to be transferred. The current status of the software is described as "experimental". (cg)

Amiga Shell on Windows: Windows Subsystem for Amiga (WSA)
The "Windows Subsystem for Amiga" (WSA) is a Python-based replica of the Amiga Shell that recreates the classic Amiga command line with its commands and keyboard shortcuts on modern computers – under Windows, drive C: can be accessed as DH0:, for example. There is also an implementation for the WWW that can be executed in the browser, but it lags significantly behind the other versions in terms of functionality. (cg)
