IOSPIRIT (ANF)

IOSPIRIT: Calibration targets for fxSCAN 4.0 and ICS
Scan like the props! You can now order professional calibration targets at a very low and attractive price that give you best scanning results when used together with ICS and fxSCAN 4.0.

And its easy to use, too! Just scan the target with your scanner and let ICS create a profile out of the result. From now on, you can automatically reach best and optimized results by selecting the ICS-filter in fxSCAN! The results are very close to the original template and mostly can't even be distinguished from it!

  • Meets the IT 8.7/2 and ISO 12641 standard requirements.
  • High color volume.
  • Printed on high-quality Kodak(R) Professional paper.
  • Meets the error tolerances required by the standard. Addmissible tolerance is 5 dE for reference files and 2 dE from CIE Lab for single measured targets. This target reaches an average of 0,3 dE in production!!
  • additional reference files for scanners with light picture background. The standard only requires reference files for black background.
  • also recommended for owners of older targets that may contain color errors after years!

Tool: FSwatcher v1.5
An update of FSwatcher is now available. This update fixes a bug and a new AutoSize option was added. More details:

History v1.5 (26.05.02):
CHG: If you set 'Com=Command' to "" (empty string),
then no action button (named "!") will be created.
[suggested by Todd A. Oberly]

(23.05.02):
CHG: The value after "time: " now shows the time
since starting the download! Previously the
time when the file was last modified has been
used.

FIX: The "time: " value now also takes care of the
days part of the time, f.e. if a download
started before 00:00 o'clock, the time
was negative.

NEW: Added the magic-stackcookie, to ensure that
it get at least 16K of Stacksize! Shell
v45.6+ is needed for this!

NEW: There a now 2 executables in the archive,
one has a "_NoGuru" appended. This is like
the previous, it shouldn't cause a guru
if an error occured.
The other (w/o the suffix) has some checks
disabled, which reduces the filesize about
3000 Bytes and may cause gurus if an error
occured! The version string tells you which
version you have.

CHG: Removed shell arg SM=SizeMode, replaced by
AutoSize/T

NEW: New shell arg AS=AutoSize/T
If used (AutoSize = YES), the current size,
the filesize and the bps are shown in B
(=Bytes), if the size is < 1024 Bytes,
in KB, if the size is >= 1024 Bytes and in
MB, if the size is >= 1048576 Bytes!

CHG: Changed the gauge infotext a little bit.

CHG: Remove the alias EXIT for AUTOEXIT, it was
only introduced to use with AmiSat, till
AmiSat required FSwatcher v1.3+.

P.S.: Since 20th May 2002 there is an update of AmiSat[2] available on jah. This version supports the option AUTOEXIT=YES. (ps) (Translation: sk)

After finishing HIGHWAY production, the included USB stack Poseidon by Chris Hodges has also been frozen for release. For this we have to rely upon the help of the Amiga Community and are hoping that we will receive lots of responses from HIGHWAY owners regarding further devices to be included into this compatibility list. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Event: Amiga Inside Party from 30.08.2002 to 01.09.2002
We are inviting for the next Amiga Inside, a party by and for Amiga users. From August 30th to September 1st 2002 there will once more be three days of Fun & Action in Hirsau. We will supply you with all important information that you should know about the party on our home page. Should you still have unanswered questions, don't hesitate to mail us.

The Amiga Inside doesn't think of itself as a pure LAN party where we sit in front of the computers for days on end playing one game after another. Mostly it is more trivial things that engage us there. Be it smaller problems, re-installations up to complete building/rebuilding of a computer, exchange of experience, workshops, presentations and of course talk amongst the users themselves. Naturally, Network games must not be missing at our place. You can view a few impressions of our first Amiga Inside in the archive on our home page.

Invited are all Amiga users and those interested from Germany and also beyond. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Petition: AmigaOS distribution policies and PPC hardware
PetitionOnline.com are hosting a petition aimed at Amiga Inc. to persuade them to move away from their presented distribution plans for AmigaOS4 based on compulsory licensing and compulsory OS/hardware bundling.

This is NOT originated in or aimed at any imaginary "camp". Its purpose is to help AmigaOS and POP/PPC hardware, regardless of manufacturer/distributor, to gain momentum with sane business practises and to remove obstacles against this based on unfounded technologically irrelevant restrictions imposed on third-party hardware designers and distributors. Zealots of either "side" are encouraged to leave the "Comments" field empty... (sd)

Günther Klug Frh. v. Biedermann (E-Mail)

Hint: Restoring of unreadable disks
Author: Günther Klug Frh. v. Biedermann
Preliminary remark:
I had some problems with the hd-floppy-drive in my A4000. Write errors were reported when copying/deleting on/of hd-disks. The attempts to format this disk also failed with the following message:

"DF0 unreadable" or "no valid disk in drive DF0" and so on.

I asked on the #AC-forum for help and I was said to clean the drive. I did it and the drive worked again. But I could not format the "damaged" hd-disks.

But I did not want to give up and I therefore tryed to format them with "OFS" (488 bytes/block)...

...and it worked!

But because this does not work with WB3.1 and menu "pictprogram/format..." I did it over the SHELL with:

SYS:System/format DRIVE DF0: NAME Empty OFS NOINTL NODIRCACHE NOICONS

Yes and then I formatted it back to FFS - now also with the WB-menu or with

SYS:System/format DRIVE DF0: NAME Empty FFS NOINTL NODIRCACHE NOICONS

And look, I could format it with FFS!!

I guess that you could not restore every damaged disk but I think it is worth trying it! (ps) (Translation: dr)

Tao Group: Kyocera and Tao Set New Standards for PDAs
Release of best-in-class `Pocket Cosmo'
E3, Los Angeles, Ca., May 22nd 2002 - Kyocera Corporation has announced 'Pocket Cosmo', its next generation PDA based on Tao's intent® universal multimedia platform. This will be sold from the end of July, initially targeted at the networks and at corporate users. The Pocket Cosmo device will be able to deliver a new level of richer contents to the user. Kyocera believes that it is these richer contents that will drive the rapid growth of the mobile data communication market.

Kyocera has used Tao Group's intent embedded application environment including its native operating system. Together they enable a very small memory footprint and hitherto unmatched performance levels. Due to the performance of intent, the new PDA runs Java(TM) programs many times faster than any other client device and it has levels of multimedia functionality never before seen on mobile handsets enabling the kind of content upon which consumers will place a very high premium.

The Pocket Cosmo Fast Java environment enhances the usability of the PDA. Its first iteration supports Tao's intent PersonalJava(TM) edition which is Sun Microsystems-branded and compatible with PersonalJava 1.2. intent is the first practical Java execution environment for these kinds of devices.

The user interface of the Pocket Cosmo is entirely original with rich menus supporting 3D movement and smooth scrolling and with instantaneous switching of applications.

Hirao Nishiguchi, President of Kyocera said, "We are aiming to deliver new services, ones which customers can easily utilize and derive real value. Combining the technologies at Kyocera with the Tao expertise has allowed us to develop this extremely exciting Pocket Cosmo PDA."

Francis Charig, Executive Chairman of Tao Group said at the E3 show in Los Angeles, "The work undertaken by Kyocera to develop a truly intuitive interface has been inspirational. Kyocera is sending out a signal to manufacturers and carriers that by using intent as the language independent, universal multimedia platform they can create their own brand recognition in a way that would be impossible with any other software technology. Kyocera has developed a product that proves that there is software technology existing already today that enables the running of content in an easy-to-use manner that really does meet the expectations of the consumer. Pocket Cosmo is a ground breaking product and Kyocera has set a new benchmark in the market place."

Kyocera was one of the founder members of the Open Contents Platform Association [OCPA] in October 2001 and its President, Yasuo Nishiguchi, is the OCPA's Chairman. The OCPA's objective is to deliver rich media contents across a common platform and it has adopted Tao's intent as the core software for the standardization. The launch of the OCPA was only 8 months ago, and this is the first Kyocera product to utilize intent.

Digital Almanac Homepage

Astronomy: Digital Almanac III with DSS-support
Achim Stegemann has made it to build in DSS-images in DA III. It is still not the final state but it works!

  • What is DSS (Digitized Sky Survey)?
The whole sky has been iinputted as digital picture information with the help of most modern telescopes. These information are on several servers of the world. You only have to input a coordinate or the name of the object as well as the size of the picture (in angle) and immedately the server sends back a pictute of the sky with the inputted area.

  • How does it work in DA III?
Because of technical details the performance of DSS-pictures is only possible in the planetary mode and from an opening angle of 3 degree. Instead of it it is possible to fade in the names of the stars and the deep-sky as well as the size of the objects. The stars and DS-objects are not drawn.
Click here for an example picture. This shows the Andromeda-fog with its accompanists with DSS-integration.
Currently the picture size is limited to 300x300 pixles but I hope I can change it soon. Instead of it the picture is loaded rather fast.

StarGATE Newsletter 21/05/2002
Marco Miljak writes:
Dear Amiga users,

unfortunately I have bad news: The StarGATE website as well as the mail distribution list will be closed down because of three basic reasons:

  1. I don't believe in an Amiga revival anymore.
  2. Developing Amiga software needs a lot of work and time. And due to No. 1 I don't think it makes sense anymore.
  3. Because of my studies my sparetime is very rare and I don't want to spend it on Amiga anymore.
However, I want to thank everyone who encouraged and supported me in the past, in the first place Petra Struck from amiga-news.de!

The StarGATE site will remain online for about 4 or 5 months and will then be shut down. The mail addresses in the distribution list will be deleted.

Sincerely,
Marco Miljak (ps)
