Amiga40: Insights into the upcoming AmigaOS 3.3
The AmigaOS development team has announced that the new AmigaOS 3.3 will be released in 2026. At Amiga40, developer Camilla Boeman took to the stage to present the new features of the upcoming version for 68k Amigas. Many new features have already been completed, including AmigaGuide with title bars and improved links, and a new HD partitioning program called PartitionEdit, which is designed to make partitioning data carriers much easier. A new Prefs tool will combine eight old Prefs and centralize the settings. Furthermore, the menu and the information requester are to be improved, and IconAssist is to be introduced for exchanging icons. Screen gadgets such as clocks and other extensions are firmly planned, and a new Moonlight icon set will also be included. In addition, AmigaShell windows will be equipped with a scroll bar and tabs. The release of AmigaOS 3.3 is planned for sometime next year – "when it's done". (nba)

Crowdfunding: SDL2 or even SDL3 for AmigaOS/68K & WarpOS (update)
At the title link, Kymon 'z!Erec' Zonias is soliciting donations for a port of the SDL2 (Simple DirectMedia Layer) multimedia library for AmigaOS/68k and WarpOS - the minimum goal for this has already been almost reached at the time of publication of this news item. If funding exceeds that amount, extras such as SDL3 and additional libraries (SDL2_mixer, SDL2_image, SDL2_net, MiniGL integration) may also be possible. Steffen 'MagicSN' Häuser has agreed to carry out the work.
The reason for this is that many open source games now require SDL2 - however, only SDL 1.2 is currently available for AmigaOS/68k and WarpOS. If crowdfunding is successful, the developer also wants to look into porting Stratagus immediately afterwards.
Update (October 21, 2025, 8:42 p.m., nba):
The crowdfunding goal has already been reached, and the development of SDL2 for AmigaOS 3.x is now financially secure. According to organizer Kymon Zonias, porting has already begun. The goal has been increased to 1200 Euro and currently stands at 1600 Euro. For every additional 100 Euro raised, an additional SDL2 library will be added: mixer, gfx, sound, image. (snx)

Feasibility study: AMOS game GhostLight
In his latest video, matching the season, Robert Smith explains how he wrote the AMOS game GhostLight, which is also available with source code. In the game, you move through a maze in which you find matches to light your way. If your match goes out, the ghosts return, which you have to avoid.
The challenge of this feasibility study was - in addition to the algorithms for generating the maze and controlling the ghosts - to make only a moving part of the maze visible and to create a brightness gradient in the peripheral area. (snx)

Graphics program: Pixy development resumed
The graphics program "Pixy", developed by Tony 'Sinisrus' using Hollywood and released in various alpha versions via OS4Depot and MorphOS Storage, will be continued by Enrique 'Kikems' Martos. The sixth alpha version, which has now been released, is primarily intended for debugging. In addition, the shareware program can now be registered free of charge until version 1.0 is completed.
Pixy (video) is a painting program for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS, which is intended to be also released for upgraded Amiga/68k systems later. The program, whose user interface is based on Photoshop, allows multiple animations to be combined in a single project, with each image of each animation having its own layer, so that, for example, all animations of a game character can be worked on directly during the development of a game.

Event: Brief report and photos from Saku 2025 in Finland
In September, the annual meeting of the Finnish Amiga User's Group took place in Oulu (Finland), and this year it also served as a celebration of the 40th birthday of the Amiga. The official website features a gallery with pictures from the event, and ‘jPV’ was kind enough to send us a short report:
"We had almost 30 computers shown at the event, mostly Amiga related, but also
some other retro and vintage setups. The Finnish Amiga retailer AmiGarage
attended with a nice stand with games and other stuff on sale. The
best-selling games around the event were Dr. Dangerous, Killing Cloud,
Cyberpunks 2, Agente 357, and Heretic 2 (OS4). We also had a head start to
the Amiga40 Germany event by having some related merchandise available to
buy.
MorphOS is also celebrating its 25 years anniversary, and new features
of the operating system were presented to interested people. Multiplayer fun
with Stunt Car Racer and Super Skidmarks ended the event in the usual style.
The warm-hearted event gathered visitors from all over the country, from
regular amigans to curious people who spotted the advertising elsewhere."

AROS: Current status of development of the 64-bit version
In a post on the AROSWorld forum, Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz reports on the goals that have been achieved in the three areas of browser/software/hardware in terms of the development plan and the current status of the 64-bit version of the AROS operating system.
During the summer months, the focus was mainly on the software side. Eleven new software packages for 64-bit were uploaded to the archives. In addition, the core system received two updates with several bug fixes as well as updated and new components. These updates are now released every 2-3 months, bringing the latest developments to the user community.
In addition to the software mentioned above, work began on two major software products this quarter: Amiberry and RetroArch.
For the last quarter of the year, the developer plans to focus on providing more software for 64-bit AROS. This will be achieved by supporting other developers in porting or recompiling software, but also by releasing a first version of the ABIv0 emulator, which is specifically designed for software that cannot be recompiled for 64-bit AROS.
The long-term outlook remains unchanged, as reported in July. (dr)

QEMU front end for launching AmigaOS 4/MorphOS/AROS: Kyvos 1.6.0
George Sokianos' QEMU front end Kyvos, which is designed to significantly simplify the setup and launch of AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS under QEMU, is now available in version 1.6.0, which includes the following new features:
- Added pid files to be saved in the .kyvos folder. This is going to be set on VM creation or update
- Added support for the "AmigaOS4.1 FinalEdition Update 3", if that is available (optional). Kyvos is looking for a file named "AmigaOS4.1FinalEditionUpdate3.lha". If that exists in the same folder like the AmigaOS 4.1 FE ISO, then it is going to be used when the kickstart.zip file is created.
- Enabled the virtio-gpu options for Sam460 systems. This driver is not coming with Kyvos

Terrain models: World Construction Set 2.031 "Emerald-Caesar" (AmigaOS 3/AROS)
Just in time for Amiga 40, the landscape generator World Construction Set has released its brand new version Emerald-Caesar. In addition to bug fixes, this release includes the following new features:
- Catalog support: The programme is now fully multilingual. In addition to the built-in English texts, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish are now supported via catalog files. This required the translation of over 2,100 entries for each language. In many places, the GUI had to be slightly adjusted to take into account, for example, the alignment of buttons and texts in different languages.
- Colour calculation window: Previously, images could only be displayed in greyscale during calculations. Emerald-Caesar now allows users to switch to colour display. The quality of the display naturally depends on the number of colours in the screen mode used. The use of graphics cards allows for full 24-bit output. Both P96 and CyberGraphX are automatically supported.
The author Alexander Fritsch wishes you "lots of fun with the new version!". (cg)

Arkanoid clone: CALLBACK - The Legend Of The Power
"CALLBACK" (Video) is a minimalistically illustrated Arkanoid clone with 25 levels, 5 end bosses and a soundtrack with 20 different music tracks. An Amiga 1200 with 2 megabytes of Fast RAM is required; the game runs at 50 FPS on this configuration. A demo version can be downloaded for free, and the full version is available for 15 ¤ at itch.io. A limited physical edition with floppy disks in a jewel case will be available at "Amiga 40" this coming weekend. (cg)

Turn-based strategy: "Citizen Happiness Update I" for "Settle the World"
Christian Wiegel writes: "With this update, the citizens of a city begin to react to the supply of finished goods and the availability of required buildings. If the supply of finished goods is insufficient, the citizens become unhappy. Unhappy citizens can strike at production buildings, thereby partially shutting down a city's goods production. In the worst case, if unhappiness is very high, citizens may even leave a city and, with a bit of bad luck, roam the countryside as bandits.
If very small cities lose their only citizens, they are abandoned and destroyed, and all workers employed there and goods from the city's warehouse will vanish with the city.
To calculate all this, each city now has a loyalty value. If the citizens are happy, this value increases; if they are very unhappy, this value decreases.
If both the happiness in the city and the loyalty value are low, the negative effects described above can occur.
Events outside the cities can also influence the loyalty of the cities. For example, if the player is at war with a native tribe and they kill a civilian unit, the loyalty value in all cities will decrease slightly because the player is unable to protect their citizens.
It's not quite balanced yet, so I'm relying on your feedback. That's why there's a roman numeral I in the update name, as further updates will be necessary on this topic.
Otherwise, there have been quite a few changes in the game, and many bugs have been fixed, things changed or newly introduced.
Here are some of the changes in this update:
- Loading/saving is now slightly faster.
- Players can now attack and destroy native villages.
- The game is automatically saved every six turns/months.
- New music tracks added (thanks to TLS).
- Players are now informed between turns if their relations with a native tribe have changed.
- Players are now informed between rounds if the citizens of cities are very unhappy.
- Relations with the native tribes improve over time if no player units or cities are located near their villages.
- All classes of citizens require fish for their happiness.
- The working class requires meat for their happiness.
- The catch quota for crabs has been increased.
- The yield of wheat has been slightly reduced for most fields.
- Dragoons have been slightly weakened.
- The player's mounted units receive a penalty in difficult terrain during combat.
- Ambient sound files are loaded into fast RAM if the Amiga has more than 4 MB of Fast-RAM.
Important notes:
- This update is not compatible with older game saves, as many things in the game have been changed and adjusted.
- In the game options, you can choose between in-game music and ambient sound effects. For the ambient sound effects, you need at least a 68030 CPU and 1 MB of free chip RAM (+ more than 4 MB Fast-RAM).
- As there is no music menu yet, you can use the plus/minus keys on the numpad to adjust the volume of the music or ambient sound effects.
- You can switch between the in-game music tracks using the ‘comma’ and ‘full stop’ keys (, + .).
I'm not yet sure if everything works, so I'm relying on your help and feedback. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to test everything thoroughly.
Feel free to join our Settle the World Discord and contribute your ideas and feedback to actively help improve the game :-)" (cg)
