AHI - Beta

Audio: AHI - ahi.device 5.21 (Beta) (Update)
Martin Blom released version 5.21 (beta) of the ahi.device for ix86. The following changes were made.
  • ahi.device: Re-enabled optimization and removed all 64 bit kludges for the Amithlon version. It's still just using the C version of the mixing routines, but is already about 2.5 times faster native (compared to the JIT-compiled 4.180 version). I like it.

  • paula.audio: When opening timer.device (used in the DMA mode), I didn't clear the flags parameter and opened UNIT_MICROHZ instead of UNIT_ECLOCK. [Sigbjørn Skjæret]

AmigaOne: MPEG showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux
Elwood writes on ANN:
I uploaded on Aminet a video in Mpeg showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux. This video is old (March 2002) and not professional in any way (in fact, it never meant to be). I originally wanted to upload it on my website instead of putting this huge file on Aminet but my ISP didn't allow me this. So here it is, to make Aminet even bigger!

Remember this AmigaOne is the prototype (G3/600Mhz) and it runs TurboLinux. And I must confess, I never seen a Linux booting that fast. I'm excited to get my hand on AmigaOS4.

Download: AmigaOne.mpg (80 MB)

Update 02.06.2002:
The video was deleted from this Aminet server. I do not know the motive.

Update II 02.06.2002:
Here you will find the explanation from Elwood. (ps)

Amiga Arena - Full version of "Samba Partie AGA/ECS" and redesign
With the approval of Jo Seitz (Sayonara Software), Amiga Arena enabled the release of the full version of the football manager "Samba Partie AGA/ECS".

This is the first part of the "Samba" series. Besides lots of other features, the football manager also has an action part where you can actively play with your team.

Amiga Arena has been allowed to release further games by "Sayonara Software" in the future. Yet, for this we need your help, as we don't have all games at our disposal!

We are looking for the following software items:

  • Diego - Football manager
  • WHLM - Ice Hockey manager
  • Samba Partie prof. - Football manager with action part
  • Travel-Manager - Travel simulation
  • Hollywood Pictures - Manager
  • Samba World Cup - Football manager with action part
Please contact: Olaf Köbnik.

Amiga Arena - "Full version" redesign
The Amiga Arena Full versions have been divided into new areas. Besides the familiar download facilities for commercial software and shareware programs, the areas have been restructured, and with "Applaud Software", "Sayonara Software" and "Vulcan Software" three new areas have been added.

Here you will be able to find - apart from the well-known games of the software houses - level codes, cheats, screenshots as well as reviews of the products. Furthermore, we are looking for the game "DNA" by "Applaud Software"! Have fun with our offerings! Amiga Arena. (ps) (Translation: cb)

A poll about the systems to be supported has been started on the new homepage of Tukult, an adventure game in development about Space-Rat.

As the first drafts had been made on an Amiga, and the author used to be an Amiga user then, in the case of an adequate turnout there should be a very realistic chance of an Amiga port.

AmiDock for AmigaOS 4 - New informations
A lot of users have questions about the new version of AmiDock that will be included with OS 4, especially regarding the differences between the OS 3.9 and the OS 4.0 version.

Here are the answers by Stefan Robl, the author of AmiDock.

The OS4.0 version of AmiDock is an almost completely rewrite of the version included with OS3.9 and a lot of outstanding issues were fixed.

The new design comes with a much improved layouter which arranges all types of icons very well (from very tiny to really big ones).

A very nice new feature is the interactive mode of AmiDock which allows the user to arrange, add, remove icons, categories and even docks directly using the mouse without the need to open the configuration dialog.

AmiDock now also supports button type docks allowing for numerous objects (programs, files) to be available at once as this mode consumes very little "desktop real-estate".

With OS4.0's AmiDock, docks can now have their drag bar on all four possible sides of a dock; each dock is now also minimizeable to conserve space.

The new AmiDock is now up to ten times faster than the old version (depending on the number of icons visible at load time).

The most interesting new feature is the possibility to have active content within a dock through plug-ins.

A plug-in of AmiDock is called a "docky". Each docky has full access to all of AmiDock's functionality and can provide for a virtually endless number of features. The usage of dockies is very transparent - throw in a docky and it will work (and vice versa).

A number of dockies will already be included with OS4.0; one of the most requested features - subdocks - was made possible using a docky. There is also a docky which minimizes a dock automatically if the mouse pointer is no longer over the dock. Other included dockies allow you to have clock, a lens, animations and other active content within a dock.

The most thrilling stuff will surely come from third party programmers in the form of third-party dockies (the API will be released with OS4.0) - just imagine having the current network traffic, the printer status, the current rendering process of your raytracer and other similarly useful things in the form of a small and corresponding picture within your dock.

This is just the beginning, we are planning a lot more useful features for AmiDock which may or may not be ready in time for OS 4.0. (ps)

Gamasutra

Gamasutra: Technology Inspires Creativity: Indie Game Jam Inverts Dogma 2001
Developing games today is very time consuming and costly. Furthermore, developers tend to first concentrate on familiarizing with new hardware to technically make the best use of it. Both go at the expense of new game ideas. In above article Ernest Adams describes the "Indie Game Jam" as antipole to currently adopted game development practice.

The basis for this jam was the question of how many sprites you can display on screen nowadays. After a bit of research, the answer was "round about 100,000". This served as the basis for the development of a simple games engine.

A small group of games developers was then invited to the "Indie Game Jam", who then went on to develop 12 news games within 4 days.

The article describes the surroundings and the games, and offers concluding information in an interview with Chris Hecker, one of this meeting's organisators. (sd) (Translation: cb)

On 1st June 2002, Stephan Rupprecht has published version 45.9 of his ILBM PPC Datatype for displaying IFF ILBM pictures. Compared to the previous version, the following changes have been made:

  • Bug fix: Because of the change in version 45.7 b/w and greyscale pictures couldn't be loaded anymore (greyscale pictures already didn't work before that).
  • Bug fix: As the OS picture.datatype doesn't pass on HAM and EHB pictures in Chunky format correctly, a workaround for this has been incorporated.

AmigaDE: Ogg Vorbis decoder "jorbis" (Java)
According to Ruben Monteiro in the Amiga Open mailing list, the Ogg Vorbis decoder "jorbis", which has been programmed in Java, runs under AmigaDE.

This decoder decodes the Ogg Vorbis audio stream into a file. For replay, an additional sound player is needed. Note: The player on the Jorbis site needs JavaSound and doesn't run under AmigaDE at the moment.

The Ogg Vorbis format is an Open Source audio format which is an alternative to MP3. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Workshop: Building in Busboard Mediator PCI 3/4000T (shortened)
Author: Mirko Naumann

With the Mediator PCI 3/4000T busboard Elbox offers a very good solution for owners of a A4000-T or A3000-T who wants to extend their Amiga with modern PCI-interfaces. The technical equipment is more than sufficient - the only disadvantage is the lack of an AGP-slot but which has none of the up to now available PCI-extensions.

Building in the board is much more difficult than Elbox writes it in its documentation. First you have to fix the board on the mainboard. For that Elbox delivers ten brass-coloured bolts with thread of which you need five for fixing the board. Unfortunately the gradient of the screws in my A4000-T did not fit with the one of the bolts.

Well, what is to do? I could not find matching screws at the PC-dealers and I did not want to cut the threads. So you have to remove the screws and to fix the bolts with matching nuts on the main board. It is also annoying that the board hides the connection of the clock-battery and of the internal speakers. By bending the contacts it works but thats not a professional solution which you can expect.

Here there are some useful links to this topic:

CCC: EU-parliament said yes to data retention
Despite of many protests the EU-parliament has agreed to loosen the data protection in the EU.

»The passed order "about the processing of personal data and the protection of the private sphere in the electronic communication" enables the memebership states to loosen the regulation of protection for data of connections to "carry out penal persecution and to save the national and public safety. Thus the way is free for the so called data retention.

Data retention means that the data of connections of the participant of the telecommunication are not only individually saved and kept after an official order but for all participants in advance and without a starting suspicion. Because of that the authorities can use also data which are far away in the past. Up to now the data of connections had to be deleted after 80 days after making the calculation.

Data protectors and people of the human rights warn before such a general data saving because thereby they say the fundamental rights for private sphere and freedom of opinion are endangered. Besides this such actions mean a turn away from the assumption of innocence because the data retention above all disadvantage the innocent poeple. Even the committee of the civil rights of the EU voted against it. The 16206 signers of a summons to the parliament refer to it.« (ps) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Felix Schwarz (IOSPIRIT)
After we have not heard much of the software publisher "Innovative" we were surprised that on April the chief developer Felix Schwarz has come back with his newly founded company "IOSPIRIT" and new software-products!

Should this be a first sign of a change at the weakened Amiga market? In this interview Amiga Arena talks with Felix Schwarz about his reasons to go on developing for the Amiga market, about his new software products as well as further new developments.

Felix Schwarz explains how he has found a solution for himself to simultaneously support AmigaOS, MorphOS and emulators and how he is able to do something against not permitted copying.

I completely agree with Felix Schwarz when he says: "Negative signs, negative effect - postive thinking and good products, positive feedback. Let's tackle!"

Finally it is in the hands of the users if they want to set a sign by buying Amiga products and thus make further developments possible.

AmigaOS XL: Experiences with the H&P Big-Tower 1800+ (Update)
Dietmar Knoll writes:
In my report, I describe the experiences I have made with the Big-Tower. Version 1.18 of the report finally contains the promised chapters, in which I more closely describe "AmigaXL" and "QNX". Furthermore, I included some links to the "Software" chapter and added the latest "Patches for Amithlon".

Note: The last update was released one month ago. Since the webserver of Compuserve is frozen since the beginning of May, I uploaded this update to Fortunecity, although this server is a bit problematic. In QNX-Voyager popups are generated, in Amiga-Voyager only ads are displayed instead of the images. Therefore, I recommend to use AWeb or Amiga-Voyager (with background images switched off). (ps)

Eyetech Group

Eyetech Group: AmigaOne Update from 30th May 2002
Press release:
The AmigaOneG3-SE

The first model in our AmigaOne range is the AmigaOneG3-SE. This is in effect a 600Mhz G3 Amiga accelerator with built in 10/100 ethernet, USB, PCI/AGP interface and memory slots for up to 2GB of SDRAM. As well as being many times more powerful and at (UKP350/USD500/Euro600*) around half the price of the previously most powerful Amiga PPC accelerator (the phase 5 Cyberstorm PPC 604 240MHz).

In fact you can regard the AmigaOneG3-SE as a high performance accelerator that comes with a free, built in computer! This means that you no longer need an attached A1200 or special tower case if you only intend to run retargetable Amiga applications. (For hardware-hitting applications an interface card to connect an Amiga 1200 motherboard to the A1G3-SE a PCI card interface will be available from Escena). The A1G3-SE also comes with a full range of legacy peripherals, and will run PPC Linux (and PPC UAE) in addition to running the new PPC-only OS4 natively.

The AmigaOneG3-SE will not be shipped to end users until OS4 is ready, but boards for OS4 developers and beta testers are already out in the field.

Amiga Inc, Hyperion and ourselves have also decided to bundle OS4 directly with the boards which we ship to dealers, mainly to reduce shipping and handling costs - and that has resulted in a small overall price reduction to end users of the A1G3-SE + OS4 bundle to ukp 382.94*. There will be equivalent reductions on the dollar and euro prices of the bundle to usd550* and euro652.50*.

Finally it is important to note that the AmigaOneG3-SE is fully quality-validated and licensed by Amiga Inc to run OS4, with all licence fees/royalties paid. AI's licence terms also stipulate that all boards capable of running OS4 must ship with an OEM version of OS4 and must have built-in hardware protection to keep OS4 piracy to a minimum, and this has been built into the AmigaOneG3-SE from the outset.

A list of dealers who have already ordered demonstration / familiarisation boards is posted on our web site (www.eyetech.co.uk/amigaone/dealers.php). Don't worry if your favourite dealer is not listed - several have either missed the ordering window or decided to wait until the end user boards and OS4 is shipping. These dealers will be added to the list on our website at the time they order end user boards from us.

Although we are advertising the A1G3-SE as an entry-level machine, have no doubt with OS4 installed it will really fly. The 600Mhz 750CXe cpu that is shipped with it is effectively that fastest G3 cpu generally available and some PPC experts reckon it is likely to deliver several hundred times the performance of an '030/50 with many applications.

Planning for the next AmigaOne - the AmigaOne-XE

We have always said that the AmigaOneG3-SE was to be the first, entry level, board in a range of AmigaOne boards which we have planned to produce. Many people have asked us to give some outline details of what we have planned for later boards in the series. So here is a taster.

The next AmigaOne board we have planned is for an up-market (read more flexible but more expensive) addition to the range. Further details will be published here and on the AmigaOne mailing list at Yahoogroups at the appropriate time (but not before!).

One of the prime requirements is to provide a socketed cpu module so that user-upgradable performance enhancements can be made as and when faster and more complex chips - and operating system enhancements that use them - become available. Our engineers do not believe that the Intel Slot-1 socket (as planned for the original AmigaOne-1200) is really suitable because of the need to minimise trace lengths between cpu and SDRAM memory at higher clock speeds. In addition both the Intel Slot-1 socket and the Apple ZIF cpu socket are now obsolete and therefore not a sensible choice for a new product not yet launched.

So for the next version of the AmigaOne, the AmigaOne-XE, we have borrowed the latest cpu socket technology from Apple in the form of the purpose-designed ´Megarray´ socket. This means that we can make low cost, tightly coupled cpu modules using either G3, G4, dual G4, (and possibly G5 - but information on the G5 is still very sparce) technology - for use on the same AmigaOne-XE motherboard. Upgrading cpu power therefore only needs a simple module exchange. The prototype socketed AmigaOne-XE board and the associated plug-in G3 and G4 modules have already been built and tested.

But before you rush off and cancel your pending AmigaOneG3-SE orders to buy the AmigaOne-XE instead, bear in mind that this extra flexibility will come at a price, and until OS4 supports the G4´s Altivec coprocessor, without much performance benefit either. And at the moment, unless you are Apple, G4 cpu´s are on very tight allocation, which means that it will be several months before they are available to anyone other than Apple at a reasonable price. At the moment the target price for the AmigaOne-XE board with the single G4 700MHz cpu module is around UKP200/USD300/Euro350* more than the AmigaOneG3-SE - and possibly less if Apple´s demand for these cpu´s drops significantly when the G5 starts shipping.

So does this mean you should cancel your existing AmigaOne-G3 order and wait a few more months? Not at all. We anticipate a high private resale value of used AmigaOneG3-SE boards, but to take the uncertainty out of the process, we, and the majority of other AmigaOne dealers, will underwrite a trade-in value of your AmigaOneG3-SE during a period of 6 and 12 months after its purchase against the purchase of a new AmigaOne-XE with single G4 cpu module. (You are of course still at liberty to sell the board privately for a higher price!).

This trade-in will be at 75% of the current retail price of an A1G3-SE 6 months after its purchase falling by 1% per month (to 69%) at 12 months after its purchase. The board must be traded in to the original dealer where it was purchased, by the original purchaser, be in full working condition and be used as part payment against an AmigaOne-XE with a single G4 cpu module. Individual dealers may also opt to have their own trade-up scheme instead, so please check with them when making your original purchase. Finally this offer does not apply in conjunction with any other discount offer, such as that applied to the A1G3-SE developer boards.

If you´ve been sitting on the fence wondering whether to buy an A1G3-SE or to wait until an upgradable G4 AmigaOne is available, you can now have the best of both worlds. Order a new, low cost AmigaOneG3-SE now and upgrade within 12 months. What are you waiting for?

* Prices quoted exclude local taxes and shipping charges. (ps)

IOSPIRIT brings USB-scanners to the AMIGA
Finally it's going to become a reality! Thanks to the continuous development of fxSCAN 4.0 you will be able to use current USB scanners, interesting both in price and technology, with the release of the latest version!

The required drivers will be made available seperatly in the "IOUSB Scanner Package" (IOUSB SP) with the appearance of fxSCAN 4.0. By building upon the IOUSB technology, it will be possible to use the drivers with both the Poseidon stack (Highway®, Subway®, MorphOS) and the stack contained in AmigaOS® 4.0.

The first driver will support Epson® scanners. Please have a look at the list of supported USB scanners on the fxSCAN- or IOUSB SP-subpages for supported devices.

ATTENTION: SPECIAL OFFER!! All those who preorder (no matter whether update or full version) fxSCAN 4.0 now, get the IOUSB Scanner Package for free!! This special offer takes effect for all already existing preorders, too.

Furthermore fxSCAN 4.0 does now support special scanner settings that may be available through the respective Betascan-drivers. This includes selection of scanner source (e.g. transparency unit or automatic document feeder) and the internal contrast-, brightness-, gamma- and black&,white-pattern-settings of the scanner. PNG is supported for saving now, too.

New screenshots and an updated "NEW in V4!"-list can be found at the fxSCAN-subpages.

The delivery of fxSCAN 4.0 might be delayed (if at all!) by a maximum of two weeks due to the new features and the required tests. Thus delivery should start by mid of July the latest. Thanks for your understanding. (ps)
