Game: ScummVM MorphOS with new interface
The new CVS-snapshot of ScummVM finally contains a completely new MorphOS-interface. Two of the most important news are the scaling engine which can scale the pictures with antialiasing to a double size (for that please have a look at the pictures on my homepage - they can tell more than thousands of words) as well as the support of CD-ROM-audio.

The new archive can be downloaded under the title link.

Now the details to the news

  • New scaling engine with antialiasing. When playing the game you can switch between the scaling engines at any time.
  • The program contains code for the MIDI-music. The MIDI-music starts playing as soon as AMidi will have been published for MorphOS.
  • Support of the CD-ROM-audiotracks of Loom and Monkey Island. The MorphOS-version is the first one after the SDL-version which supports audiotracks. Because of that I have created a new CD-audio-library which is enclosed in the archive as a beta version and which can automaticly recognize CD-ROM-drives connected to the computer and if there is more than one CD-drive which can automaticly find the one with the "right" game-CD.
  • Standard MorphOS command line (instead of the usual Unix like one).
  • Start possible over pictprogram from the workbench or from the toolbar without having to write a script for this.
  • Support for the video sequences of The Dig and Full Throttle.
  • Manual with 26 pages in PDF-format and with detailed FAQ (requires Apdf).
  • Archive contains colourful pictprograms for all supported games.
  • Before publishing as usual all supported games have been tested that they are work like the Windows/Linux-versions.
  • ... Many more minor improvements and bugfixes.

t-dsl from May 2002 via satellite
From May 2002 t-online will also offer t-dsl via satellite. The basic charge for t-dsl is 19,95 Euro/month. Additionally you have to have either a dsl modem or an Ethernet-card or only an USB-dsl modem.

Another precondition for using t-dsl via satellite is a t-net/ISDN-telephone connection and a satellite bowl for Astra. With a TV-card you can also simultaneously watching TV as well as listening to the radio. If you want to get more information (in German) the have a look at the title link under the section "t-dsl via satellite". (ps) (Translation: dr)

Development of GoldED Studio for AmigaOS stopped
Developer's Notice - Discontinued
I regret to inform AmigaOS users that all software on this web site is now discontinued (due to lack of time on my side to continue with AmigaOS software development).

What will happen to the BASIC interpreter?
Expect the source code to be made available under the GPL in the near future (in a nutshell, a GPL is a public domain license).

What will happen to the GoldED Studio software?
GoldED will remain available as a commercial product while stock lasts. Personal technical support will end this year. No future updates for AmigaOS will be released from the original developer. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Jakub Brzezniak
Not only the commercial Amiga game market has been almost vanished but also the PD game market! You cannot find new interesting games on Aminet except some few ones. Because of that it is more than pleasing that from time to time some little "WB mind"-games like "Swapper" or "Magic Numbers" are published.

Jakub Brzezniak of "Magic Software" who is the developer of the above mentioned games answers in an English spoken interview the standard questions of the Amiga Arena. But it is less pleasing that future versions of the games will be probably published only for the PC! (ps) (Translation: dr)

Back to the Roots Amiga-News 237
Easter is over but the rabbits are still busy. The lovely rabbits from "Back to the Roots" brought you some nice surprises with their latest update.

If you have a look at their Easter nest you'll find games like Rings of Medusa, Super Cars 1+2, Genetic Species Heimdall 2, Larry 1 Remake, Sherman M4, Pinball Magic and many others. Besides that many scene demos from the fantastic Mekka+Symposium 2002 demo party have been added, more music from the demoscene came online and the picture galleries are now containing some extremely colorful little eggs.

Happy (late) egg shaking! (ps)

Amiga Arena: Full Version of "AmigaBase V.2.6"
In cooperation with Steffen Gutmann, Amiga Arena is making possible the opportunity to download the full version of AmigaBase V.2.6.

About AmigaBase:
AmigaBase is NOT a relational databank with SQL-crosspoints or the like. AmigaBase IS a hierarchical, programmable databank. In spite of that, or straightaway because of it, AmigaBase is prominently suited for the management of music and video cassettes, addresses and so on.

But also complicated applications, for example bookkeeping with automatic referral and the writing of calculations, are no problem for AmigaBase.

A complete documentation of AmigaBase including all the programmable possibilities is provided in German and English in PostScript and PDF formats.

Amiga Arena offers our thanks to Steffen Gutmann for allowing us to offer this, and we would like to call attention to the development of the successor to AmigaBase, at MuiBase. (ps) (Translation: dm)

At the download area of Vaporware there are new beta versions of the browsers Voyager for AmigaOS (v3_3-beta122) and MorphOS (v3_3_beta123) .

supplement:
Bladerunner has made the following hint for Netconnect 3 user:
Netconnect3-user have to, for using the actual beta, register first their NC3-key at Vapor again as "single keys" because the NC3-key does not work with actual products of Vapor any longer. This can be done at thesupport site . (ps) (Translation: ub)

AUG99: Pictures from Mekka & Symposium 2002
The Amiga User Group 99 was abroad again and brought with them some pictures from the Mekka & Symposium. It's been a superb event with about 1400 participants. 1st-class Demos were shown on a huge screen, too, creating a unique atmosphere inside the hall.

There was to ascertain that the Amiga-demos do not need to hide in any way for the superior PC-demos. At least they seemed more dynamic and more interesting. The most impressive was the 64k-demo "Planet Potion" of group "potion", this one was confirmed inside the hall with huge applause.

Furthermore there were beside the PC-demos some C64- and (sadly) any very few some Atari-demos. Shown were as well some demos for the Gameboy and for the TI83 calculator, which was very impressive.

Among the Demos there were more topics like mp3 music, tracker, and graphic. More about that and all the results are on site Mekka & Symposium. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Amiga Expo 2002: Show Report by Daniel Miller
The Amiga/Alternative Computer Expo 2002 was organized by ImageFX's Kermit Woodall and took place in Hunt Valley, Maryland, which is a nondescript but nice town about 80 miles north of Washington DC. Not wanting to spend the entire weekend I attended Saturday for several hours which gave me enough to author this very basic report for the readers of www.amiga-news.de.

The Hunt Valley Marriot Hotel had one large exhibition area where about 24 vendors, user groups, and others set up their stands. Additionally there were downstairs meeting rooms where special seminars took place, on subjects like Lightwave, Video Toaster, robotics, Javascript, ImageFX, and more. The seminar I attended featured a panel of 3 former Amiga engineers: Dale Luck, Dave Haynie, and Andy Finkel. Each spoke for a few minutes about his experiences with the Amiga computer at Commodore and thereafter. They then accepted questions from the audience.

Dale had injured a leg muscle in a skiing adventure, and he sat and took it easy while the others did most of the talking. Andy and Dave spoke about the early years, and about the Commodore bankruptcy. They spoke about their common work at PIOS on the Metabox set-top box. I can't recall who, but one of the three spoke about the 3DO system as the reinvention of Amiga OS, and another about the AmiJoe PPC-accelerator card. When asked about Amiga Inc.'s DE product, Dave said that it was "a good idea" and that someone named Gary had sent him two of the latest DE programs, but then accidentally let slip that the programs crashed on his Zaurus.

Overall the men seemed happy talking about their time at Amiga, and a bit wistful. Andy and Dave agreed that the single biggest mistake was wasted time and a failure to seize the moment when technological advances had been within the company's reach.

Upstairs in the large exhibit hall, a vendor with a mild speaking impediment ushered people over to try his Arcade in a Box. It is a sturdy joystick, button and trackball cabinet, which interfaces with MAME to play hundreds of arcade games with the feel of the real thing.

The people who produce the X1200 (which is an emulator-running PC in a compact A1200ish case) were there demonstrating that unusual product, which is rather spiffy in appearance. The X1200 is a pretty good idea. It runs Amithlon, which seemed to be selling very well at the show. Amithlon was getting positive comments all around. Amiga Inc.'s DE was a non-issue. Nobody is into that, from what I saw. There was a lot of anti-Microsoft sentiment. People resent having to use products by that company, because the Windows monopoly is such a fact of life and the consumer does not have much of a choice.

An example of the vendors present at the show was Compuquick who were very knowledgeable and had a good variety of stuff including A1200s and the oldish Phase5 PPC accelerators which can run MorphOS.

MorphOS felt a bit like a taboo subject. The MorphOS/4.0 question is the most politicized issue ever for followers of this platform. Some of the vendors were taking preorders for AmigaOne/4.0. Ben Hermans from Hyperion was reached on cellphone and was interviewed for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Ben must be given credit for putting himself out there and being a salesman.

I liked the fact that this convention doubled as an "alternative computers" convention, however this good idea has not been realized. There wasn't much representation from alternative computing systems. No Linux people, and I don't think anyone from QNX appeared either. And of course it would have great to see a MorphOS stand.

On the whole, the event was positive. There are several different Amiga platform projects in the pipeline now, some of which seem realistic. If some new products materialize, the dynamics of the scene will change, and we could continue these conventions, only bigger and busier. (ps)

Statement from Bernie Meyer regarding the distribution of Amithlon
Bernie Meyer:
The bad news first: I have just released a statement regarding the distribution of Amithlon; It is available under the title link. Please read it; I hope it might explain some of my recent less than cordial reactions on the Amithlon mailing list.

The good news is that I have uploaded an updated kernel image (based on linux 2.4.19pre4) and a bunch of patches; You can grab that stuff from http://www.amithlon.net/en/amithlon_updates.shtml.

I hope it comes in useful for someone.

I know this is going to cause a great deal of discussion and speculation. I would like to ask everyone to please be reasonable, and stick to the known facts, as well as to polite forms of discourse. The situation is bad enough as it is, nothing at all can be gained from aggravating anyone involved.

Thank you all for your understanding,
Bernie Meyer (ps)

Benjamin de Waal (AmigaOne-ML)

Amiga Information Site
Due to the number of complaints on several public lists and forums regarding a lack of a centralised place for Amiga information of all kinds (classic, AmigaOne, OS4, Amiga Anywhere), I am working on such a site.

It's TEMPORARY home is at http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~yttrium/amiga/ Please note that the current layout is very much not going to be the final look of the page. I've got it how it is so that I can easily and quickly add pages and information without the need to work on the nitty-gritty of looks - I'm no website designer but please don't send ideas for how you think I can make it look better, I'll come to that when I've got enough information to warrant having a page in the first place. What I'd like to request is that anyone who feels they can contribute, please do so by emailling me information and pages to include. This is not intended as a news site so I don't want information about upcoming events and that sort of thing, just straight info. I'd appreciate it if you send me whole pages to just slot in where appropriate that you design them with no javascript, frames, or scripting of any kind - just straight and plain HTML with links - also if you could keep images to an absolute minimum as I only have 10MB webspace with my ISP and don't intend on moving it to a real server until it's complete enough to be the kind of place I'd be happy to point people for more information. My 10MB should be plenty if we can keep it to being pure text and key images only. If you take a look at what I've got there at the moment, you'll see the general kind of things I want. My AmigaOne page is probably about the most complete at the moment, but I could very much do with more technical information linked off the AmigaOne specs (most of those links I've written about one or two lines only at present).

The general idea is that anyone of any level can look at the site. People click on the AmigaOne link and see basic information. Techie types say, I want to know more about xxx, and click on that link for more tech info. Any information that is implied or suggested but not directly stated anywhere by someone "official" should be marked as such. I know you might mean well, but unsubstantiated rumors are NOT the intended goal of the site. I'm going to be putting a lot of my personal time and effort into maintaining the information and keeping it all as up to date as possible and I'd appreciate not having to wade through mountains of rumor and misinformation. Information regarding anything to do with Amiga is welcomed, but no "this is better than that" without hard fact to back it up. Presently I'm mostly interested in information on AmigaOne, AmigaOS4, Classic Amiga (history), Amithlon and AmigaDE (Anywhere), however if someone wants to write something about MorphOS, UAE, Pegasos, Merlancia, pOS, Classic Amiga expansions, software issues or anything else relevant, I won't reject it (if it's factual, unbiased and contains useful information of course).

Also, obviously, if anyone sees anything on the page that they think is incorrect, let me know and I'll investigate it further.

To avoid spamming these lists with ideas, please send information/pages directly to me at either yttriumox@softhome.net or yttrium@ihug.com.au with "page submission" in the subject (just so I can filter for it, I get ALOT of mail). (sd)

Poll results and consequences
First of all "Thanks" to all Amigans who participated in the poll (Digital Almanac). Though the poll was not representative, it has showed several directions:

About 80% of all participants have shown their interests in the AmigaOne and Pegasos board. But most of them want to wait how the market will develop before they decide to buy one of the boards.

Astonishing: Almost all were not sure whether to buy the AmigaOne AmigaOne or the Pegasos, but almost all would prefer OS 4 rather than MorphOS! That's not a miracle, as both boards have almost identical specifikations. And Amiga has shown with the publishing of BoingBag 2 and the specs of OS 4, that development is continuing, while it has been quiet calm with MorphOS during the past month. Also most participants await a higher compatibility from OS 4 to old OS 3 instead from MorphOS.
This shows, how important it is for Amigans, that the current existing software will run reliable under the new OS. However, it is currently unknown, how much new software will be released for OS 4.

DynDNS Client: AmiDynDNS v1.0 BETA
The DynDNS client AmiDynDNS is available in version 1.0 BETA, you can download it from the website (title link).

AmiDynDNS is now a CLI/Commodity hybrid program. So you can use it as before from the CLI and from the workbench with a little GUI.

The Commodity mode is interesting for server users who must know the latest host. AmiDynDNS is running in the background after startup and checks in free chooseable intervall the stated host and updates if necessary.

Also two options are added, you can choose paths for log- and configfile.

This is a public BETA so I want to ask all users to report their experiences. I am interested especially in bugs and suggestions for the final version 1.0. (ps) (Translation: gf)

VHT-DK New update of VirusZ III (v0.99)
Georg Hoermann has made an update of VirusZ III, and the bugfixed update is now available for download at our homepage. Here is some info about the update:

Name: VirusZ III v0.99
Archive name : VirusZ.lha
Archive size : 57.211
Date : 1 April 2002
Programmer : Georg Hoermann
Requires: AmigaOS 2.04 or better
util/libs/ReqToolsUsr.lha
util/virus/xvslibrary.lha
util/pack/xfdmaster.lha
util/arc/xadmaster.lha (recommended)
util/libs/DisLib.lha (optional)

News in VirusZ III v0.99:

  • Improved window calculation code to avoid rendering bugs when you have installed sysihack-like programs. Thanks to Harry Sintonen for the bug report and screenshot.
  • Splitted the single 'About' request in a 'Technical Info' request and a new 'About' request and added some more information to them.
  • Fixed bug: 72 bytes of memory disappeared during every program startup, this seems to be a problem with special CreateNewProc() tags. After two nights of debugging I still couldn't locate the bug exactly, so I did some workaround instead, now there are at least no more memory losses.
  • Added the first vector snapshots sent by David Oakes, Ian Chapman, Fulvio Peruggi and Harry Sintonen. Thanks guys!
  • Fixed minor rendering problem with VirusZ's main window. This one only appeared if you have modified the top_border size with tools like MCP. Thanks to Luca Longone for the report/screenshot and sorry for my angry email :-)
  • Added full support for NSD-64-bit devices. Now the bootblocks of partitions located higher than the old 4GB-border will finally be accessed correctly.
  • Improved disassembler output in the bootblock lab. The first three longwords now always get displayed as 'dc.l' lines and disassembly starts at offset $000c, the real entry point of a bootblock. This avoids strange interpretations of the bootblock's checksum and the two other fields.
  • Added some more vector snapshots sent by Dariusz Krzempek. Thanks!

SFXSoft

SFXSoft: YGM V2.6
YGM stands for 'You've Got Mail'. It checks an unlimited number of POP3 mailboxes for new mails without needing to start up the favourite yet sometimes bulky mail client just for this. YGM shows how many mails are waiting in each mailbox for download and their approximate size.

The most important new features in this release are:
The argument NOQUIT has been added to tell YGM not to quit an already running instance of YGM if it is started again. Modified the places where YGM looks for different files to better support running YGM from the WBStartup drawer. Mailbox login now supports APOP for transmitting username and password more safely. REPEAT values may now be specified in seconds too.

The Amiga Expo 2002 Hyperion chat is now available for download!
Download: Amiga-Expo-2002-hyperion.mp3 (5,5 MB)

Some interesting snippets of information, posted by SlimJim:

  • Screenshots of Amiga OS 4.0 will be published in the first part of April.

  • Magic Menu and Birdie (among others) will be seamlessly integrated into the OS 4.0 interface.

  • The new OS 4.0 GUI will look quite different (i.e it will not just look like a fast OS 3.9).

  • Opus Magellan 2 has been licensed for OS 4.0 (details unknown).

  • For the moment, the new printer system is not due to arrive until Boingbag/OS 4.1.

  • The _latest_ MUI source code will be used (there was a question about this)

  • IBrowse2.3 will be quite some beast. It will be enhanced for OS4.0. Not just some Aminet update. It will still miss some features of Netscape/IE though. There is not time to fix all to OS4.0. Flash is planned to be implemented. IB will be _much_ more stable than it is now.

  • The guy that did the Warp-datatypes seems to be doing the new PPC-datatypes.

  • The datatype system as a whole is to get a complete overhaul later. There is not enough time to do that to initial release.

  • An office suit (Open office if I remember correctly) is being worked on. This is a 'high priority' for inclusion. (although it was not clear to me if it would be shipped initially)

  • The development of software -independent of company size- is difficult to predict. But Mr. Hermans seems quite confident of an end-user release in May.

CD32 & CDTV Emulator Akiko (for Windows) Version 1.5
Akiko 1.5, the CD32 & CDTV emulator for Windows was just released on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. This version is a major update with many new features and cool improvements: For example it's now possible to boot CD32 & CDTV games directly from their ISO image or from a folder on your harddisk. Additionally you can put the audio tracks as MP3s on your harddisk and Akiko will use and play them also (so you can also replace the music with your favorite soundtracks!). Finally Akiko supports some new CD32 & CDTV games and some fixes were done (concerning CD audio and Joypad emulation). And I removed the code protections for Speris Legacy, Worms and Alien Breed 3D because they are no longer necessary these days and so they only nerv the users. Akiko 1.5 can now be downloaded from the Airsoft Softwair web page (title link). (ps)

Move of #AmigaFun IRC-Chats
Stefan Martens:
Today the IRC channel #AmigaFun is moving to a new IRC server network. Phat-Net will hopefully be our permanent home. We decided to take this step because of the problems with Altnet. A year ago the admins promised improvement, but the problems just got worse and worse, especially recently.

On top of that, the Altnet admins were not going to let more than 5 users on the HTML chat, utilized by amiga-news.de and amigafuture.de. At Phat-Net 15 users are allowed, and on request this number may be raised, for example for special events. So there will be fewer problems with the use of the HTML chat. Not to mention that PhatNet has services. Unfortunately I can't control the fact that everyone who has registered a nickname must register it again. This should present only a minor problem though, ask us and we'll be happy to help you with it.

Advantageous to everyone: Phat-Net is a German server, located right in the middle of Germany.

Tobias Abt - Statement about Picasso96 on Mediator-ML
Tobias Abt, one of the original P96 programmers posted:

"Would there have been proper funding of our work because of licence fees or at least a steady stream of registrations, we could have provided the user base with Picasso96 v2 updates and new drivers. But that never happened, so we concentrate our own efforts to work on projects that will bring some cash in. Which means better support for Amithlon and OS4. We will now mainly concentrate on v3 and OS4, so don't expect any more v2 releases." (ps)

Amiga Inc.: Executive Update - Status

Executive Update - Amiga Status Announcement

Bill McEwen - March 25, 2002

Greetings once again - To One and All:

Fresh from a fantastic showing at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, where Amiga Anywhere wowed and amazed commentators, developers and potential customers alike, I wanted to take the time to get the Amiga community caught up on our flagship project, the AmigaOS.

Contrary to the nonsense that is being spread about by a few very noisy people, the AmigaOS is more than alive and well and we have very exciting plans for the future with more hardware designs and exciting new features. We have very long term life and long term goals for this amazing product.

We look to the AmigaOS as the desktop solution and Amiga Anywhere as the embedded solution for Cell Phones, PDA's, Set Top Boxes, Internet Appliances and some other new products. When AmigaOS 5.0 hits the road then you will see these code bases merging and the two worlds will allow the content to co-mingle and proliferate.

Another way to view this is that AmigaOS is for the Amiga Community whereas Amiga Anywhere introduces Amiga to the rest of the world. It is then that they can join us and be part of the Amiga community. It is all about market share and the opportunity to further expand and grow the Amiga market and user base.

As you know, we took the strategic decision to outsource development of the next generation hardware and compatible AmigaOS version. This was done to allow us to concentrate on AmigaOS5, our long term goal, whilst also providing a compelling and high performance path from AmigaOS3. What this does is give the Amiga community a product that they can be proud of in the short and medium term.

The hardware contract was awarded to Eyetech Limited, of Stokesley, England, and the software contract was awarded to Hyperion Entertainment, of Belgium. Both companies have an impressive reputation for quality products and a deep commitment to the Amiga, having played a major part in keeping the platform going through the last five years.

These two contracts underlie the first new combined Amiga hardware and software product in over 8 years; the AmigaOne, a product whose features and functions were set after looking at the thousands of mails, articles and comments generated by the community. A PowerPC (PPC) CPU was asked for and it was selected. The ability to take advantage of the latest video and audio technology was demanded and it was successively built in. USB support was talked about and we obliged. A better filesystem, integrated TCP/IP and 3D, an enhanced Workbench; all have been designed into AmigaOS4.

The excitement is growing. The AmigaOne is already running PPC Linux, AmigaOS4 is progressing rapidly on 68K Amigas equipped with PPC accelerators and integration is currently underway. Orders for developer boards are already being taken and many developers are working closely with the AmigaOS4 team to ensure that their applications are optimized for the future.

It has been a long haul and there have been many bumps on the road. With the world economy starting to move out of recession, and the success of Amiga Anywhere, Amiga Inc is moving from strength to strength. It could not have been done without the support and commitment of the Amiga community and we want the community to know that we share its support and commitment to the success of both our product lines, Amiga Anywhere and the AmigaOS.

Hardware Update

Last month, Fleecy Moss, CTO of Amiga Inc visited the headquarters of Eyetech and spent a few hours with Eyetech management, engineers and their newest addition, a PPC mother board that will be the at the heart of the AmigaOne. Running a version of PPC Linux specially designed for it to permit evaluation, the board and its peripherals performed flawlessly with the system being very responsive, boding well for an optimised and efficient AmigaOS in the future.

The original hardware plan for the AmigaOne was to create two products, a motherboard with an integrated A1200 interface, allowing for the first version of AmigaOS4 (4.0) to be completed quickly by still having access to the AA chipset, and a second product, a standalone board that would work with the second version of AmigaOS4 (4.2), which would be independent of the AA chipset.

Over the past 6 months, advances in hardware have meant that the second product is actually going to be available before the first. As a result, the hardware strategy has been updated. The AmigaOne will be built around a revision 1.5 motherboard. This board will be completely independent of the AA chipset and will not need a connected A1200 in order to run AmigaOS4. There will be no motherboard with an integrated A1200 connector. Instead, Eyetech are planning on developing a PCI to A1200 product for those who wish to run older Amiga software that requires direct access to the AA chipset. In effect, the A1200 will be like just another graphics card plugged into the PCI bus of the AmigaOne.

Using this approach it is also technically feasible to use the PCI-cable interface to connect to an A3/4000 via the CPU slot connector - and even to an A2000 via a CPU pin header. These interface variations may follow later, depending on demand.

The current hardware specification for the AmigaOne is as follows;
  • CPU - any G3/G4 to the currently available speeds
  • Memory - 2 133 MHz SDRAM slots for upto 2GB
  • Graphics support - (2x AGP plus 66MHz PCI)
  • Card expansion - 4 PCI slots
  • Legacy Support
    1. FDD
    2. Serial
    3. Parallel
    4. PS2 keyboard and mouse
  • Integrated Systems support
    1. 2 USB connectors plus 2 headers
    2. 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
    3. AC97 (Audio)
    4. MC97 (Data/Fax/Modem)
    5. UDMA 100/ATAPI - 2 channels (4 devices)

Beginning on the 18th of March, developers and dealers can order developer versions of the boards, allowing them to evaluate the product and to be prepared for optimising their applications for AmigaOS4. To order a developer board, please use Eyetech's online shop.

For more information on the AmigaOne hardware, please visit Eyetech's AmigaOne pages.

Software Update

Hyperion Entertainment have assembled the cream of Amiga developers to work on AmigaOS4.0, guaranteeing both high quality and high performance in the final product and ensuring that AmigaOS4.0 and beyond will be a true Amiga product, created with due care and attention to the philosophy and practices that have always made Amiga solutions the envy of the world.

AmigaOS4.0 is currently being developed on Amiga 4000s equipped with CSPPC accelerators, and integration is now underway on the AmigaOne 1:5 boards provided by Eyetech.

The aim of AmigaOS4.0 is five fold;
  1. to provide a transition from the 68k based custom chipset Amiga hardware to PPC based pluggable sub system hardware
  2. to provide as great a degree of backwards compatibility as is possible
  3. to optimise the AmigaOS for its new hardware foundation
  4. to move the AmigaOS forwards, offering new features and high performance all wrapped up in the traditional easy to use Amiga architecture
  5. to prepare the way for AmigaOS5

Its feature set as currently defined is as follows;

Exec SG (Second Generation) - A rearchitectured and reimplemented Exec core services manager that allows the deployment of AmigaOS4 to any suitable PPC hardware including but not limited to the Amiga One, Blizzard PPC, Cyberstorm PPC, Shark PPC from Elbox, Pegasos from bPlan etc.

The following features are being added;
  1. Hardware abstraction layer
  2. Virtual memory
  3. New library interface
  4. Resource tracking and management
  5. Optional memory protection
  6. WarpOS backwards compatibility

68K emulation - This is key to AmigaOS4.0 as many of the less performance crucial OS elements, as well as the entire body of Amiga third party applications will require it in order to work. The latest Just In Time (JIT) techniques are being employed to ensure maximum performance, with hand tuning of many areas to accelerate the Amiga architecture.

PPC native connectivity suite - this was the most requested feature from the community, integrated connectivity, and given its importance, we trusted its development to Olaf Barthel, one of the most respected Amiga developers in the world. He has not disappointed, with benchmarks suggesting that the new AmigaOS4 solution is faster than any other available solution. Its feature set includes;
  1. implemented as a single shared library
  2. compatible with the Amiga standard "bsdsocket" API, as defined by the AmiTCP product
  3. enhanced API for more control over the inner workings and configuration
  4. built-in DHCP client
  5. Internet Superserver (inetd)
  6. IP filtering and networking address translation
  7. drivers for asynchronous PPP (dial-up networking) and PPP over Ethernet
  8. SSLv2

PPC native reimplementation of the Amiga File System (FFS2) - FFS2 is a fully backwards compatible re-implementation in C of the Fast File System. It supports media greater than 4 GBytes, and a new variant of the file/directory name storage format which allows for long file names (up to 108 characters). Salvage and recovery tools will also be included that support both FFS2 and SFS.

PPC native CD file system - the feature set for this second most requested feature of AmigaOS4 is as follows;
  1. Joiliet support
  2. RockRidge support
  3. CDDA support
  4. multi-session support
  5. Video CD support

We also intend to add support for mixed audio/data CD's and support for the HFS and HFS+ filesystem as used by Apple.

PPC native RTG system - with the AmigaOne supporting both AGP and PCI graphics cards, the ReTargetable Graphics system is crucial to high performance. Redesigned and reimplemented for AmigaOS4 and the AmigaOne, a team lead by the creators of the Picasso96 solution will ensure the hightest quality graphics display for the consumer, whether gamer, artist or general user. In addition, hand tuned drivers are being written to support the following graphics cards, with more to be announced later.
  1. Permedia 2
  2. Permedia 3
  3. Voodoo 3
  4. Matrox G450/G550
  5. ATI Radeon

Amiga3D - developed from the pioneering Warp3D solution offered by Hyperion and now available on both the AmigaOS and AmigaDE, this 3D solution offers the power and simplicity of a low level 3D interface, allowing developers to create blazingly fast 3D applications without the overhead of a fatter 3D solution such as OpenGL. Hand tuned hardware drivers for the above mentioned graphics cards will provide even higher performance. Whoever said games are irrelevant on the Amiga is in for a surprise.

OpenGL 1.3 support (mesa 4.0) - whilst Ami3D allows the developer to get down close to the metal, OpenGL is the standard for a full 3D solution. AmigaOS4.0 will offer OpenGL1.3 support by implementing mesa 4.0 on top of Ami3D, giving developers the 3D choice of performance and feature set.

PPC native RTA - With the introduction of PCI card support, the Amiga community now has access to the latest in audio hardware. Given its excellent collection of audio software, such as Audio Evolution, Samplitude and others, this AHI compatible solution will allow the AmigaOne to become a major force in audio creation. With support for most existing Amiga audio cards as well as Soundblaster live and Soundblaster 128, the future has never sounded so good.

PPC native GUI system - the entire look and feel of AmigaOS is being reworked;

Intuition is being rewritten and enhanced, to give a PPC native foundation to the AmigaOS interactive environment.

Reaction, the BOOPSI based component GUI system has been reimplemented and enhanced for seamless integration with the AmigaOS.

Many new classes are being developed whilst drag and drop will be supported across the system.

Matt Chaput, designer of the famous GlowIcons is taking a leading role in the look and feel, ensuring that AmigaOS4 will look both modern and unique.

A PPC version of AmiDock will also be included, ensuring that Workbench continues to be the most usable environment of all the desktop platforms.

PPC native CLI - the tool of choice will be removed of annoying bugs and enhanced to make it even more useful.

SCSI interface - SCSI will be supported, allowing the many devices already owned by Amigans to be used, but with particular attention being paid to SCSI devices that use the SCRIPTS controller, for the next generation of devices.

AmigaInput - A new framework for managing input devices is being designed as a prelude to the requirements for AmigaOS5. This will appear in AmigaOS4 and become a crucial part of the developing Amiga solution.

USB - USB was to be introduced in AmigaOS4.2 but given the developemtent of the 1:5 motherboard, parts of it will be introduced in AmigaOS4.0. Currently this will allow USB mice and keyboards to be supported but, if all goes well, new devices will be added as they become available, with scanner support next in line.

PPC datatypes - the datatypes system has been implemented and extended within the AmigaDE, demonstrating our commitment to superior Amiga technology. With the move to PPC, the system and many of the datatypes will also be moved across, increasing their performance dramatically.

PPC Storage Toolbox - a set of functions allowing for the management of fixed and removable storage devices.

PPC font engine - surprisingly one of the most requested features for AmigaOS4.0, a brand new font engine will be added to the AmigaOS, providing support for both True Type and Open Type fonts. In addition, bullet.library and diskfont.library will be reimplemented and enhanced and a contract with Agfa for 12 truetype fonts has been negotiated.

In addition, many Amiga developers are coming forwards and demonstrating their commitment to the AmigaOne and AmigaOS4; in particular
  1. 1. Special PPC native OEM version of Ibrowse 2.3
  2. PPC native version of MUI for applications that require it
  3. Special PPC native lite version of Audio Evolution

All in all, AmigaOS4.0 is shaping up to be a very compelling and exciting product which in combination with the AmigaOne will provide the product that we have been waiting so long to offer to the Amiga community.

Whilst the the changed schedule for the AmigaOne boards is very welcome, it has added AmigaOS4.2 work to the schedule for AmigaOS4.0, namely the abstraction of the AA chipset. Coupled with the need to reimplement certain features included by Haage and Partner in AmigaOS3.5 and AmigaOS3.9, this may push out the final consumer delivery date; an analysis is underway at the moment to determine this.

The Amiga community is owed a great debt by Amiga Inc and, with the success of AmigaDE now allowing us to build revenues and increase resources, the long layed plans for the future of both the AmigaDE and the AmigaOS can be put into action. Thanks for all your support and here's to the future,

Signed on behalf of Amiga Inc, Eyetech, Hyperion and all those working together for the future of the Amiga

CyberGraphX: Help for disappearing screen modes for OS3.9 BoingBag2
After the installation of OS3.0 BoingBag2 it can happen that all screen modes disappear. This is due to the same error that happened a few months ago when a newer version of BlizKick was released. The problem is related to a version check of exec. library. Newer exec versions (> v40) cause problems when scanning the display database for cgxsystem.library less than version 42.6. Any exec.library patch or hack with a version > v40 runs into this problem.

By means of the cgxsystem.library from V42.7 this will get fixed. This version is enclosed with CGX from V4.2pre11 (for normal Amiga graphic boards) and CGX from V4.3beta R3 (for G-Rex-PCI). (sd) (Translation: sr)

Amiga Flame

Games: Paul Burkey about Amiga ports
In Usenet Paul Burkey of Epic Interactive (Foundation, Feeble Files) discussed the difficulties encountered when porting a game to the Amiga.

Porting Feebles Files to Amiga was possible because Epic had already ported this game for MacOS so that the costs for licensing and development had already been covered. This means that the Amiga version just needs to cover the costs for duplication (and some additional time for development). That's why ports exclusively for Amiga aren't possible since developers need additional Mac (or Console) ports in order to survive.

Paul Burkey suggested that two new game ports to MacOS may be ported to Amiga and he didn't rule out games for AmigaOne.»

Patch: BlizKick V1.24rc3
On 23 March 2002 Harry 'Piru' Sintonen released version V1.2rc3 of BlizKick. This version offers improved romfixes for the OS3.9 BoingBag2.
  • Fixed V45 exec.library of AmigaOS 3.9 BoingBag2. It uses quite crude hack to enable it, you'd better have true 32bit memory that doesn't go away at reset for this to work. Works on my BlizzPPC, Wizor's & SMF^'s Blizzard 1260, Cyber2th's CSMkII and Zerohero's Blizzard 2060 at least. YMMV. Note that this hack automatically fixes some buggy programs that peek $f80000 for version information. Thanks to my impatient betatesters: Wizor, Jagge, Cyber2th, Zerohero, SMF^ and Lizard. Special thanks to Lizard for bugging me about this. Also thanks to everyone who mailed me about the problem.
  • Improved romfixes module: No longer fails whole module if some sub-patch fails. Now it should be possible to use romfixes as the last module.
  • Modified files since 1.24rc2: BlizKick.readme BlizKick/BlizKick BlizKick/BlizKick.ASM BlizKick/Modules/romfixes BlizKick/Modules/romfixes.ASM

Game: NetHack 3.4.0
The new version 3.4.0 of Nethack is available for download. Versions for several platforms such as Linux, MS-DOS, Windows3.1, Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP, Macintosh and Amiga exist.

What is NetHack?
NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender. For information on running the program see the README that comes with each copy. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Trademark Trouble: Asterix versus MobiliX
As already reported on 26.01.2002, Werner Heuser, administrator of the open source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers has received a request from the German legal representative of "Lés Editions Albert René", owners of the trademark of the name Obelix, in November 2001. Werner Heuser sent the plaintiffs a 22 page response (PDF). His arguments were rejected, though, by the legal representative of the trademark owner.

Werner Heuser: "Remarkable in the document are the insults at the end, which don't seem usual for writings from lawyers. The legal trouble is documented since its beginning at the MobiliX webpages and is discussed in many mailing lists and news groups. This seems to have impressed the plaintiffs. They now accuse MobiliX of inventing "a new kind of electronical terror", and are ready to sentence MobiliX. It will be interesting to know, which sentence the plaintiff will invent against critical discussion in newsgroups."

Despite the announcements of the plaintiffs, the case goes on: The court in Munich (Germany) has set the date for the first hearing to June 12th 2002.

GFX-BASE: Interview with Nikolaj Thygesen
You can read an English-language Interview with Nikolaj Thygesen. Nikolaj is the creator of a professional freeware image-authoring program, similar to Photogenics or ArtEffect. Right now he is busy with a new beta that not only has an improved layer/levels-system, countless paint-effects and the usual design-tools but it also has splines, an anti-aliasing font-engine, an improved GUI and much more.

GFX-base wanted to know more about this beta, and so they talked with Nikolaj about his beta, his future plans, his new website, and current Amiga happenings. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Update II to opinion poll of laser labelling
As we have already reported in February and at the beginning of March the company Lasertechnologie Winter offers the possibility to Amiga-groups of labelling things made of steel with logos and writing by laser. There have been some questions concerning this. Because of that Gernot Stühn has created a paket for download which contains a price list as well as examples. Gernot wants to point out that this prices are net prices to which you have to add 16% value added tax.

This is short summary of the German article. If you want to get further information then please have a look at the title link. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Virus Help Denmark: xvs.library v33.38
Georg Hoermann & Jan Erik Olausen has just released a new update of the antivirus library "xvs.library", the update is now available for download at our homepage.

The xvs.library contains all the virus recognition and removal code that was formerly included in VirusZ. This step has been taken for one major reason: VirusZ, Virus_Checker, Virus_Executor and all the other antivirus software can be updated quickly without releasing the whole packages every time a new virus appears.

So simply install the xvs.library from this archive to your LIBS: drawer to get 100% protection against the latest viruses.

To be able to check if the library in this archive really came straight from one of the authors, you can use the public key with the .sig files in the archive. If you are not sure or do not trust the included key, then you can always request the original straight from one of us (by email) or get it from the VHT-Denmark homepage.

Here is some info about the update:

Name: Xvs.library v33.38
Archive name: xvslibrary.lha
Archive size: 81.516 bytes
Date: 19 March 2002
Programmer: Georg Hoermann & Jan Erik Olausen

News in xvs.library v33.38 (size: 59.040 bytes):
Just had to fix two problems with the security code:

  • a. Timing has been improved to avoid interference with some music software. Thanks to Paracels/PCB for the report and testing.
  • b. Expunge of library caused access to deallocated memory in some rare cases. Thanks to Mikolaj Calusinski for the report and the excessive beta-testing ;)
  • Fixed (hopefully all) MuGuardianAngel hits in the SurveyMemory() routine. If anyone detects some more, please send me the logs. Thanks to Thomas Richter for his suggestions about mmu.library, but I finally found an other solution. And thanks to Sensei for reporting all his hits.
  • Improved speed of SurveyMemory() drastically by skipping similar recognition routines in just one step if their common requirements are not available.

Spiel: Tales of Tamar Amiga-Version 0.42 R1
The new Amiga-version 0.42 R1 for the Internet-based round game Tales of Tamar from Eternity has been published. Beta tester can download the update of the known place.

With version v0.42 the remaining city levels have been added. A city can now consist of up to 240 different buildings within four several levels: Village, town, city and metropolis.

At the same time Eternity dares to give a statement: "Now some things like settlers, cavalry, artillery and the statistics screen are missing and then the basis set for ToT has finally finished! But not to raise false hopes: Nevertheless ToT is tested for two years then we will add another two months of intensive tests in order to fix also the last bugs. Massive multiplayer games like ToT are very complexe programs and therefore have to be tested in this way.

What will happen afterwards? Already now we have carefully planned the future. ToT will be continued developing after the basis set, permanently improved and extended. ToT players can integrate with corresponding wishes in the project. All that which is meaningful and feasible we will add. Already now there are plans:

  • Building castles
  • Online-knights competition like archery, lances pang a.s.o.
  • Pedigree-management for the players
  • Specialists (clerics, wizards)
  • Royal secret service
  • Spying, saboteurs
  • Library with extensive documentations of ToT
  • 3D-card in ToT-fashion
  • Battlescreens
Certainly some people have noticed that some points have stood for some years on our list. The concept has progressed during the last years and it changes. Partly some things have been added which we have not planned even four years ago. The basis set has become so complex that we now have to draw a line." (ps) (Translation: dr)

Instant Messenger: STRICQ 2.7
On 15 March 2002 Douglas F. McLaughlin released the beta version 2.7 of the instant messenger 'STRICQ'. Compared to the previous version the following features have been changed:

  • New: Can now add numeric (only) UINs to the contact list.
  • Modification: Online/offline status changes are now updated for those contacts that are permanently in the 'Not in List' group. To be permanent, a message must have been sent/received or the contact was added manually.
  • Modification: Some may have noticed that in the previous version the system beep came up on incoming messages.
  • Modification: The versioning system now works according to the normal Amiga scheme: version.revision.

Installation instructions: STRICQ V2 isn't compatible with the previous version STRICQ and must therefore be installed in its own directory. At the moment STRICQ V2 can only be launched from a shell prompt.

There's a lot of debug output in the shell window so that you may need to send a copy to Douglas F. McLaughlin in case of bug occurrences.

Run the program, it will not be able to get online right away. Enter your nickname, your UIN and your password. Click 'Save'. Close the program by using the close window button on the contact list window. Your prefs are now saved. Restart the program and if all went well, you should now be online. However, you have to consider the following points:
  • It's now possible to add UINs manually. Searching for Name/Nick/E-Mail is not yet supported.
  • If you have used ICQ2001b before, STRICQ V2 will import your contact list from the server.
  • If you get an enforcer hit, please forward it/them to Douglas F. McLaughlin. Make sure you use <pre></pre> tags.
  • You'll need the latest versions of NList, NListtree, and TextInput. Links for download are available on the STRICQ homepage.

AROS

AROS: Palm, Zune (MUI), Build-System, HDToolBox
At AROS the work on Palm port, Zune (MUI), the build system for compilations of AROS and the HDToolBox for partitioning the hard disc has progressed a lot since the beginning of March.

Stefan Berger and Georg Steger are working on the Palm port. It already boots Xcopilot and POSE off a ROM image and displays some windows at incredible speeds: The screen bar's title 'Workbench Screen' is drawn at 5 seconds per char ;-). Obviously the graphics driver needs some improvement. At the moment everything is done via PutPixel() and GetPixel().

Sebastian Bauer is permanently doing more work on Zune.

Henning Kiel has changed the build system so that you can have compile targets in one tree. Also different host configurations in one tree are now supported.

Sebastian Heutling has committed his new partition.library and a new HDToolBox which uses the library to access/modify the partition table.

Iain Templeton fixed init() functions of the libraries to use proper macros for arguments.

Stefan Berger implemented Clib's sig#?set() functions.

Adam Chodorowski merged in the latest Python 2.2

Portal: amiga.com.pl and amiga.hu boycott Amiga Inc.
Because of Amiga Inc.'s plans to provide Microsoft Windows CE.NET with software www.amiga.com.pl and www.amiga.hu have decided to boycott Amiga Inc.. All links to Amiga Inc. will be removed from the pages and there'll be no more publications of news regarding the company, their products and their employees. As far as Amiga Klassik, MorphOS etc. is concerned everything will stay the same.

«"The latest Amiga Inc. policy shifts... give us no other option than to say farewell to them for good..." That was the public statement of Grzegorz Juraszek of Poland's Amiga news service amiga.com.pl.

Balogh Karoly of the Hungarian Amiga news service followed suit. "We the editors of amiga.hu hereby join the Polish boycott." Karoly cited a public opinion poll that showed users strongly disapproved of recent events at Amiga Inc.

The developments are in response to announcements by both Amiga Inc. and Microsoft that the two companies have formed an axis. Amiga Inc. intends to provide software to Windows CE devices, and is appearing at the current Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, USA.

The Russian Amiga Information Center www.amiga.org.ru had not yet taken a public position as of press time.» (sd) (Translation: sr)

H&P

Haage&Partner: AXL: New monster system
H&P now offers for power-hungry Amiga users two new top systems. Heart of both is the AMD Athlon XP 2000+. For cooling, the CPU vent Coolermaster Heat Pipe is used which was just recently declared the most powerful CPU vent by a test report. So there is enough room for overclocking. The system ships with a GeForce 2 graphics card, fast CD-RW writer, DVD drive, sound, ethernet card, two 40 GB IBM harddisks and the remote system Logitech Desktop iTouch. The blue Coolermaster aluminium case is used on request. Amithlon and AmigaXL/QNX are preinstalled and can be selected in the boot manager. On request, H&P also installs a Windows operating system. New information about Eyetech's AmigaOne
Press release:
The A1.5 is now ready!

The AmigaOnepoint5 is now production ready and orders for discounted developer/dealer/OS4 beta-tester boards/systems are now being taken (but only until by midnight on Sunday 24th March GMT 2002) for delivery in April. This closing date is necessary so that we can assess the volume required in this initial production run and place the order with the manufacturers. Purchasers of these boards will also be able to obtain a discount on the full user version of OS4.0 when it is released.

If you have previously applied for beta-tester or dealer status YOU MUST REAPPLY as we no longer require beta testers for the A1 board itself, only for OS4 and applications that run (or should run!) under it. Please order via our website here. If you are a dealer, please mention this on your order, and a dealer price will be forwarded to you.

The main production run will be timed so that boards are ready at the same time as the consumer release of OS4, probably in May 2002.

The developer/dealer boards and (at least) the first run of production boards will be shipped with soldered-on G3 PPC CPU's running at 600 MHz which will give a remarkable speed increase over any existing G2 (Blizzard/Cyberstorm) PPC accelerators for the Amiga. Soldering the CPU in place - rather than using BGA sockets or chip carriers - allows us to keep the reliability very high and the costs as low as possible. (BGA sockets and/or carrier board options add a huge amount to the cost of the board).

As OS4 versions (or applications software) are developed which make use of the Altivec processor in the G4 we will make a G4 version available, again with a soldered-on chip (probably the 7441 at 700 MHz). It is possible that we could produce a socketed chip-carrier version, but only if we can engineer the costs down so it adds no more than 15% to the costs of a board with a soldered on CPU.

The A1.5? What happened to the original A1?

In October 2000 when we laid out the design for the A1, there was no commercially available 'northbridge' chip (the interface between the CPU, memory and PCI bus) in the relatively small quantities that we needed, at an economic price. 'Southbridge' chips were available (these handle the system timing, interrupts etc and, traditionally also embed the lower speed peripheral functions such as IDE, USB etc), but clearly these do not come with a built in A1200-PCI bridge - which would have to be built in custom logic. It therefore made economic sense to build a custom southbridge chip which incorporated the A1200-PCI bridge - but without the integrated peripherals (which were available on separate chips at low cost anyway). Things were going nicely on the original A1 design until May/June . . . but not much - and certainly not enough to allow us to even consider going into production - was happening on OS4 at that stage. We therefore ramped down hardware development work and concentrated on finding a workable solution to make OS4 happen.

By the time OS4 development had been signed off in early November the world had moved on. Commercially available PPC northbridge chips were available, and coupled with off-the-shelf southbridge chips, were able to deliver better price performance than the original A1 custom chip design, and (since the big boys had already been using them successfully) without the risk of bugs intrinsically present in any custom logic implementation. This meant that the only custom logic function needed was for the PCI to A1200 bridge.

Alongside this many people had expressed a wish only to have a stand-alone A1 board, without the need (or ability) to run hardware-hitting applications. In addition Hyperion have been making better than expected progress in decoupling the chipset dependencies in the OS with a result that it will cease to be reliant on the Amiga chipset at a very early stage of the OS 4 release cycle. (Of course hardware hitting applications will, to a greater or lesser extent, still need access to a genuine Amiga chipset). Given this, we thought it would be sensible to try to provide Amiga chipset availability as an a option, so that the main A1 board would not have to carry the cost of providing this connection - in terms of PCB and component real-estate, and in requiring a custom tower to mount it in. The upshot is that Escena has come up with a solution which allows the bridge to the A1200 chipset to be made from a PCI card, via ribbon cable, to the A1200 edge connector. The use of a ribbon cable also helps solve the 'will it work in an xyz tower' problem, as there is (within limits) quite a wide range of A1 & A1200 relative board positioning that can be used. This A1200/PCI bridge will be an additional cost item for those who need it.

Revised specifications for the AmigaOnepoint5

Over the past year or so since the original AmigaOne specifications were first published we have had a lot of private - and more than enough public - feedback on what people would like to see in the AmigaOne specifications over what had been published. Of course several of these wishes were completely commercially unrealistic (eg - I paraphrase - "Why don't you produce a Gameboy-sized and -priced AmigaOne with the power of the top SG workstation that runs on one AA cell for 6 months, and is user upgradable - and still runs my A500 WB1.3 games from floppy") - but there were also lots of sensible comments as well.

The main useful feedback that has come out over the last year concerning the original design - and the way the AmigaOnepoint5 addresses these can be summarised as follows:

CPU speed concerns: The AmigaOnepoint5 will handle G3/G4 CPU's to their current clocking limits (but, of course, subject to chip availability at the higher end - Apple currently absorbs most of these chips under contract).

Memory speed concerns The AmigaOnepoint5 supports 133MHz FSB SDRAM. (According to our engineers DDR memory doesn't gain anything in help PPC board design).

Provision of legacy peripherals The AmigaOnepoint5 has on board FDD, serial, parallel, PS2 kb & PS2 mouse ports.

Provision of integrated peripherals The AmigaOnepoint5 provides 2x USB on the motherboard rear ATX I/O panel) + 2 more on headers (for using a front bay outlet), 10/100 ethernet, AC97 audio and MC97 data/fax/modem, and UDMA 100 hard disk/ATAPI interface (2 channels - 4 devices).

Graphics interface speed The AmigaOnepoint5 supports a 2x AGP bus, and PCI graphics cards at 66 MHz.

Will it run Linux? Yes - in fact that's how the AmigaOnepoint5 hardware design was debugged. The developer editions will be shipped with Linux PPC and UAE PPC install CD's.

I don't need hardware-hitting application compatibility The AmigaOnepoint5 will run in standalone mode as soon as OS4.0 has had all the legacy hardware dependency removed from it. As most of this (according to Hyperion) was in the already-rewritten exec.library this full hardware independence will be introduced very soon after the first release of OS4, if not actually incorporated into it. If your application itself still requires the presence of the original Amiga chipset then you will need to use the optional PCI/Amiga bridgeboard.

Will it fit in an EZTower Mk1-5 / Elbox tower / standard ATX tower? The AmigaOnepoint5 has a full ATX form factor and will therefore fit into any suitable ATX tower with a 250W or higher PSU. It will fit directly into the EZTower Mk4 & 5 (these will need the AT PSU replacing with an ATX unit) in the PC board position, and into the EZTower Mk1-3 (which will need a minor amount of metalwork to accommodate the back panel ATX I/O connectors & an ATX PSU). The EZTower Mk1-5 also allow an A1200 motherboard to be mounted within the same case as the AmigaOnepoint5 board.

The EZTower-Z4, the Power/Elbox Tower and any other Amiga-specific tower design are not suitable for the AmigaOnepoint5 board without substantial modification. However if you have purchased an Eyetech EZTower-Z4 directly from us since 1st January 2001 please read the special arrangements we have made for you in the FAQ's below.

In summary the AmigaOnepoint5 will come with:
  • 4 x PCI slots + 1 x AGP slot on 2 buses
  • 10/100Mbps ethernet
  • 2 x USB connectors + 2 more on headers
  • 2 x UDMA 100 channels (4 devices)
  • Open firmware-compatible BIOS with OS4.0 extensions & NV memory
  • PS2 mouse & keyboard connectors
  • Sound, modem & gameport I/O via the AMR header
  • Parallel, serial & floppy (PC FDD controller) connectors
  • Real time clock
  • 2 x SDRAM sockets for up to 2 GB of main memory

CPU options

As far as the CPU is concerned the first series of boards will use a 600 MHz G3 CPU and will come with this soldered in place, thereby keeping the costs as low as possible. As G4's fall in price/become more available we may also offer a soldered in place G4 CPU option as well. If we can engineer the costs of a socketed/chip carrier version with CPU to be no more than 15% above the price of a soldered-in CPU equivalent then we will consider producing these versions.

What happens if you buy an entry level board and want to upgrade it in a year or so's time? Well exactly the same as when you bought a similarly priced accelerator a couple of years back and want to upgrade to a faster one (but this time you get a free computer attached!). You either sell it privately or trade it in to the dealer where you purchased it. In fact in the PC market, despite all processors being socketed, hardly anyone ever changes the CPU to improve the computer - they nearly always have to buy a (at least) a new motherboard as well. We're just being upfront about it!

AmigaOnepoint5 availability

To keep prices down and quality up we are having the boards manufactured in the Far East. Delivery to us in the UK is around 4 weeks from our placement of the order with the manufacturer. The developer/dealer boards will be ordered will be ordered on 25th March and allocated to those that have placed their orders, including payment details, by midnight on Sunday 24th March GMT. Cards will not be charged until the boards are shipped.

The main production run order will be placed by us when Hyperion have told us that they can commit to release OS4 as an end user product. Hyperion's web site will give updated OS4 release information on a regular basis. We will then invite Amiga dealers to place firm volume orders with us for shipment on a first-come-first served (FIFO) basis. There will be a minimum order volume and technical support requirements to become an AmigaOnepoint5 dealer. The revised A1 dealer requirements will be published on the mailing list at www.yahoogroups.com/group/a1dealer.

Dealers (and end users) will be required to purchase one copy of OS4 with each AmigaOnepoint5 mainboard or system. Dealers will be able to purchase OS4 direct from Hyperion.

AmigaOnepoint5 pricing

Dealers are free to set their own end user prices both for the AmigaOnepoint5 boards and for complete systems to take account of import duty, localisation of support, documentation etc. However our recommended pricing for the AmigaOnepoint5 motherboard, inclusive of a 750CXe 600 MHz G3 PPC processor but exclusive of local taxes and shipping charges, is UKP350, USD500, EUR600.

OS4 pricing is determined by Hyperion but is likely to be UKP42.50, USD62.50, EUR70.00 (excluding local taxes) when bought with an AmigaOnepoint5 board or system. The standalone prices for OS4 (for use with the CyberstormPPC etc) are likely to be UKP51.00, USD74.00 EUR84.00 (excluding local taxes & shipping).

Developer/OS4 beta tester systems

A limited number of developer/dealer AmigaOnepoint5 boards will be available for delivery in April to those placing orders by midnight on Sunday 24th March GMT. These will be fully functional and tested boards identical to those produced in the first production runs. These developer systems will be shipped with Linux PPC and UAE PPC on CD (for you to install) and a beta version of OS4.0 will be available for download from the Hyperion website - to board purchasers - from the Hyperion website. Eyetech will not be offering any direct support for the installation of Linux PPC or UAE PPC except via our website pages. If you feel that this task may be beyond your capabilities then please do not order the developers board - it is not meant for you.

These developer boards will be offered at a 10% discount over the regular price (ie at UKP315/USD450/EUR540 (excluding local taxes and shipping). There will be a further 10% reduction on the price of the end user version of OS4 when published, for purchasers of the developer board. (Dealer terms for these boards will be posted on www.yahoogroups.com/group/a1dealer).

FAQ's

What versions of Linux does the AmigaOnepoint5 run? The board currently operates with TurboLinux PPC and we are currently sorting out an installation of SuSE Linux for PPC.

Can I buy a version of the board for running Linux PPC only? We are currently considering making this available. However you should note that it will not be possible to run Amiga OS4 on such a board without purchasing a special copy of OS4 which comes with a firmware update ROM. This is (obviously) to prevent OS4 piracy which is essential if Hyperion/Amiga Inc. are to continue to develop OS4.

Will MorphOS run on the board? The AmigaOnepoint5 is designed to run Amiga OS4 & beyond, and Linux for PPC. It is likely that MorphOS could be made to run on the AmigaOnepoint5 by someone committed to port it but that will not be endorsed or supported by either us or Hyperion.

Where can I buy it? The AmigaOnepoint5 is being distributed on an 'Open Distribution' model. That means that there will be no territorial or market exclusives, and any bona fide incorporated body that can meet the requirements in terms of technical support and minimum order quantities can sell the AmigaOnepoint5 (and OS4). If you feel you qualify (or know a dealer that ought to be interested) please see the dealer information page.

What sort of memory does it take? The board has 2no 184 pin SDRAM sockets each capable of taking an 133MHz SDRAM DIMM of up to 1GB. DIMMs do nor have to be of the same size, but should ideally be from the same mainstream manufacturer and should be of the buffered variety.

Will I need the A1200/PCI bridge board? We anticipate that a 'fully retargetable' version of OS4 - that is one without any Amiga chip set dependencies - will be available with, or very soon after, the first public release of OS4. This means that any applications software which does not rely on the availability of specific Amiga hardware (or rely on specific drivers that hit these chipsets) should work fine without the PCI-Amiga bridgeboard in place. We are referring to these as 'Retargetable Applications', and in general they are the applications which will run using add-on graphics, sound, serial, parallel etc cards. Other applications which need access to one or more specific Amiga chips to run - such as scrolling games and programs like Scala - will need the bridge card present.

How does the Amiga/PCI bridge card work? Can you make one for my Amiga x000? All Amigas (with a few minor exceptions) use a common memory map where the specific chip register addresses, chip memory, Kickstart ROM etc are located. These are all in the bottom 16 MB of the Amiga's memory map so they can be accessed via the 24 bit address bus 680x0 CPUs used in early and low end Amigas. The bridgeboard maps 16 MB of its address space to this 16 MB address space of the A1200, providing address, data & control lines to read and write to the chipset and I/O (eg parallel, serial, FDD, HDD, PCMCIA, etc) registers. The PPC MMU maps the 16 MB of the PCI card's address space to the lower 16 MB of address space in the emulator's memory map, so that any application programs wanting to read or write to addresses in this region will read and write to the actual Amiga chip set registers (ie as the application programmer intended) via the PCI bridge. The interface between the PCI card and A1200 edge connector will use special chips - similar to those used in some microprocessor emulator boards - which ensure the integrity of the data.

In theory we could also use the same PCI card with an A3000/A4000 CPU connector (or possibly even an A2000 CPU socket header) to access the chipsets in these machines. Whether these actually get built will depend on the commercial case for doing so once volume boards are shipping.

What sort of tower case does the board need? The AmigaOnepoint5 board is a full size ATX board and needs a 250W or greater ATX PSU. We recommend you purchase the board first before selecting your tower, or buy it from an official AmigaOnepoint5 dealer, either in component form or as a ready built system. We recommend that a 'super-midi' sized tower (such as the T05AC model which we sell) is used to give plenty of expansion space. Naya Design are also producing some very stylish designs specifically for the AmigaOnepoint5 which will be available via us or you local dealer. Full details will be posted after Easter.

I've already bought an A1200 tower in anticipation - what are you going to do for me? The main reason behind the new design is to deliver much better performance at a much lower price than was possible with the AmigaOne-1200 design. Although no price was actually released, our pricing indications were that 'the AmigaOne-1200 would be comparable with the price a top end PPC accelerator from phase5' - ie around UKP550/USD800/EUR900 ex VAT & shipping. One of the means of delivering this better price performance is to allow the AmigaOnepoint5 to use a standard ATX form factor case, not the custom-modified, more expensive EZTower-Z4 / Elbox Tower / Power Tower etc. Obviously, even if you buy a new tower now for the AmigaOnepoint5 and put your custom Amiga tower out to grass, you have still made substantial savings and performance gains over what the AmigaOne-1200 would have cost.

However for those customers who have purchased an A1200 tower direct from us between 1st January 2001 and 15th March 2002 and who order an AmigaOnepoint5 board direct from us we will give you a brand new T05AC tower (without PSU and clip on plastic panels which you can swap over from you existing EZTower-Z4) free of charge.

Is the AmigaOnepoint5 the same as the MAI Teron Cx? No. During the period leading up to the OS4 development agreement being signed we evaluated the Articia S northbridge chip for possible use in a redesigned AmigaOne. We concluded that it was the most cost-effective chip for the design and proceeded to draw up some new specifications for an uprated, more cost-effectively engineered AmigaOne, the AmigaOnepoint5. Clearly using the Articia S instead of Escena's custom northbridge design meant that both the schematic design and the PCB layout would be entirely new. MAI logic are a chipset manufacturer, not a PPC motherboard manufacturer, but they had commissioned a low volume, high cost evaluation board, the Teron Cx, to help sell their chipsets. The Teron Cx was never designed to, or intended to, go into volume production. We therefore asked them if they could recommend a design company who was familiar with using the Articia S in PPC motherboard design. They recommended the same (Far Eastern) company that designed their Teron Cx evaluation board.

The new Eyetech AmigaOne design obviously shares a lot of commonality with the Teron Cx board, but more than a cursory glance at the specifications (ATA speed, integrated ethernet, custom firmware, number of active PCI/AGP slots etc) - and the price - of both boards should be enough to convince most people that they really are different designs.

However if you remain unconvinced you are of course perfectly welcome to purchase the Teron Cx evaluation board. It costs $3900, misses many features of the AmigaOnepoint5, and won't run OS4.

I bought a Party Pack and claim my $100! The Amiga DE SDK Party Pack is an Amiga Inc. promotional program and has nothing directly to do with Eyetech, Hyperion or any of the AmigaOnepoint5 dealers. Amiga Inc. will be handling the administration of this program directly and will announce the procedures to be followed when the AmigaOnepoint5 goes on sale in volume. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Update to Inga-developer packet version 1.0/6 beta
There is a new update of the Inga-developer packet. Inga is an engine for the classic graphic adventures like Monkey Island 3 which can be easily created with the help of this developer packet.

The update includes the following things:

  • Inga-engine version 1.0/6 (beta)
  • Audio-CDs can be played (via cdplay.library).
  • New script commands: pre-loading, clearing, ilkabove, ilkdown, "LadeLaufkarte", "AusDieMaus", "Leistensperre", "LeistensperreAus" and menu.
  • The two mouse colours were changed to be equal to the workbench-standard.
  • Developer modus integrated. Thus it is possible to load old game scores with processed script versions. Besides this the inventar and the variables can be changed during the game.

ScriptShell version 1.1
In the new version the command list was put in an external file ("IngaCommands") from the program file. Thus you do not have to update the full program if there are new script commands.
There is also an English version of the "IngaCommand"-file so the script language can be also changed to English.
If you compile a log-file is created in the "Dats"-directory of the game ("ScriptShellLog") where all labels with their address pointers are listed. These will be required for the developer modus of the engine.

"OrtEditor" version 1.1
In a new menu you can select between German and English script-language. If you push the key <DEL> while positioning a graphic element the element will be invisible or visual again. This is very practical if you want to test if an element sits right on the background.

You can find the update as well as further information under the title link. (ps) (Translation: dr)

With 3,000 developers already signed on, 67 titles available and hundreds more in development, Amiga Anywhere brings developers and consumers together Anywhere and everywhere on any and every digital device.

Through a long term partnership with the Tao Group, Amiga content and services are now available for the vast majority of software platforms including the various flavors of Microsoft Windows, Linux, Embedded Linux, Symbian OS and VxWorks. The software runs unchanged on almost all of the mainstream microprocessor families.

Bill McEwen, Amiga's President and CEO, said, "The Amiga community is renowned world-wide for creating exciting applications. It has a heritage as one of the leaders in the video game industry and film animation. Today, those skills are being used in creating content that can run on almost any digital device and will offer new levels of excitement as we move forward."

"In the two years since Tao and Amiga first began working together, our relationship has progressively tightened," said Francis Charig, Chairman of Tao. "Operators are seeking content that consumers will actually pay for, portable content that runs across a broad range of appliances. Amiga is the first company that has actually got content that fulfills this important objective."

Amiga Anywhere capable devices have instant access to a rapidly growing world of quality applications, exciting content and valuable services. Many existing devices can become Amiga Anywhere capable while several new devices, such as the Nokia MediaTerminal come with that capability as standard, offering a compelling reason for customer purchase. StrICQ (ANF)

Instant-Messenger: StrICQ v2 Beta6
Douglas F. McLaughlin released beta 6 of the Instant-Messenger 'STRICQ' (version 2). Compared to the previous version the following changes have been made:
  1. Fixed the '*** NULL POINTER ***' text some people reported showing up in the contact list. It was caused by sending or receiving a message to/from a UIN in the 'Not in List' group.
  2. Now that the above bug is fixed, sending or receiving a message to/from a UIN will cause that UIN to remain in the contact list even after restarting STRICQ. However, there will be no status changes for those UINs.
  3. When a UIN shows up in the 'Not in List' group, STRICQ will now request that UIN's short info and display the Nick in the contact list.
  4. Fixed a long-standing bug in the contact list display that would cause a crash if the existing nick was changed after the UIN was already inserted into the contact list.
Download: STRICQ v2 Beta 6 STRICQv2.lha

Installation tips:
STRICQ V2 is incompatible with STRICQ and must for this reason be installed in its own directory.

At the moment STRICQ V2 can only be launched from a shell prompt. There's a lot of debug output in the shell window, which can be send to Douglas F. McLaughlin in case of occurring bugs.

Run the program. It won't get online right away. Enter your nickname, your UIN and your password. Click 'Save'. Close the program by using the close window button on the contact list window. Your prefs are now saved. Restart the program and if all went well, you should now be online. However, you should consider the following points:
  • You cannot add contacts manually yet. If you have never used ICQ2001b, don't bother using STRICQ V2 at this time.
  • If you have used ICQ2001b before, STRICQ V2 will import your contact list from the server
  • If you get an enforcer hit, please forward it to Douglas F. McLaughlin on the message base. You should use <pre></pre> tags.
  • You will need the latest versions of NList, NListtree and TextInput. Links for download are available at STRICQ-Homepage

Easter-events with individual Computers
Several events that are supported by individual Computers take place around Easter this year. Compuquick Media Center will represent us at the Amiga Expo 2002 in Baltimore, MD. Cloanto will make a very good offer for the ISA version of the Catweasel controller at that show.

The Scene-event The Gathering takes place in Norway, where our retail partner Data Kompaniet will hand over our contribution to the competition prices.

As in the past seven years, the scene-party Mekka & Symposium takes place around Easter this year as well in Fallingbostel, located between Hamburg and Hannover, Germany. Just like in the past years, our biggest financial engagement is dedicated to this party. In addition to prices worth more than 1000,- EUR alltogether for the winners of the different multimedia competitions, we have arranged an opening of a near LPG (autogas) filling station outside the usual shop hours for party visitors. This will enable the drivers of enviroment-friendly and cheap LPG-powered cars to refill for about 0,50 EUR/liter. We hope to attract visitors from Belgium, the Netherlands and France with this, as LPG cars are much more popular in those countries than in Germany. Closer informations about this via E-Mail. (ps)

Virus Help Denmark: VirusZ III version 0.98
Georg Hoermann has made an update of VirusZ III, and the bugfixed update is now available for download at our homepage. Here is some info about the update:

Name: VirusZ III v0.98
Archive name : VirusZ.lha
Archive size : 54.288
Date : 9 March 2002
Programmer : Georg Hoermann
Requires : OS 2.04+, xvs.library

News in VirusZ III v0.98:

  • Fixed bug in vector check kickmem brain that caused all patches to be recognized as 'AmigaOS ROM Update'. Sorry for that!
  • Designed a new display format for the vector check. This one looks better and is more informative than the old one.
  • Added brain for kicktags to the vector check. This one currently only recognizes 'AmigaOS ROM Update' and 'ramdrive.device'.
  • Added the 'Snapshot' function to the vector check (as I promised). Now you can snapshot every unknown patch that causes alerts on your Amiga and send me the results. This makes it possible for me to even add patches that I cannot install on my computer. Read the manual for detailed information!
  • Added recognition for ppc.library v46.37 to the vector check. Thanks to Jean-Michel Chapron for the handmade snapshots.
  • Added disassembler mode to Memory Monitor. This should help experienced users/programmers to analyse unknown vector patches.

Surf tip: Abmahnungswelle.de
While searching for comprehensive information about the topic "warnings" I came today across the website "Abmahnungswelle.de". The website offers many details about the topic and gives many useful and up-to-date hints for homepage provider. For all who run a homepage, no matter whether private or for business, is this website a treasure house for important information.

Many private homepage owners may possibly not be aware of the fact that the new laws TelediensteGesetz (TDG) and/or Mediendienste-Staatsvertrags (MDStV) provide for example that everyone running a website that is publicly open has to fulfil his/her information duties about "purpose and identity". That means among other things that it is one's duty to make the name and address of the responsible person available. In the (German) article Information duty for purpose and identity by Abmahnungswelle.de you can find comprehensive tips for this. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden withdraw from public discussions
Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden from Hyperion have decided to not take part anymore in public discussions on mailing lists, newsgroups and forums and have unsubscribed from all lists. This counts from now on.

For questions and discussions on personal basis, though, they are still at your disposal.

Here's the complete message in English in which they explain their move:
Recent events have given me the impression that it has become impossible in the Amiga community to speak up in self-defence without someone taking offence in it. Thomas and me have therefore decided (in in fact already did so) to unsubscribe from all amiga-related public mailing lists, newsgroups and web forums, and we have deleted all our Amiga bookmarks.

Work on our projects will not be affected by this. OS 4 will still be developed in the same way it used to be. We're just pulling out of the public.

I'm sorry we have to take such drastic measures, but it simply doesn't work otherwise anymore. You can still contact us personally, we're open for discussion, but no longer in public. Fact is that everything we say will end up on some web page or forum, being dissected to death and commented with all sort of nice wording, so the best solution is obviously to say nothing at all.

Thanks for reading this.

Best regards,

Domain quarrels: AMIGAplus 03/2002 with delay
Nico Barbat wrote:
As reported have the editorial department and the publisher of the AMIGAplus been warned by a lawyer in the case Cyberdyne-Systems. To avoid further conflicts we have decided yesterday to remove a planned article covering this case in the news rubric of the coming issue. Further legality steps in the way of a collective suit and complaints at the lawyers association against the sueing side are in discussion right now.

The AMIGAplus 03/2002 that was to be released on March 13th will be delivered because of this printing delay about three days later than planned. We ask for you to excuse this.

Furtheron we ask all readers who have got a similar warning writing to contact the AMIGAplus editorial department (info@amigaplus.de) or directly Stefan Kost (ensonic@sonicpulse.de). Please do not rushly sign an omission statement that is not lawful this way! (ps) (Translation: wk)

As you maybe mentioned there was no newsletter with this release of the new MasonIcons due to problems with my email account and the amount of new subscribers.

That's why I decided to change to YahooGroups. As far as I know not everybody is satisfied to be stored in a YahooGroup so I deleted the old subscriptions completly.

Amiga Future

Emulator (Sinclair): ASP version 0.82
ASP, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator for Amiga by Ian Greenway, is available in version 0.82.

Ian Greenway:
This version has a small amount of code changed in the Z80 core which I was hoping would offer some small speed increase. Despite the fact it is shorter code, fewer clock cycles to execute, and cleaner, it seems to actually run about 5% slower on my '060. :-( Still, the code was optimised for '030, so maybe it will help there!

Main features of this release are a ROM Configuration GUI, .SP snapshot support, better drag-and-drop, and some extra TZX stuff. The full list is, as usual, in the guide. (ps)

Linux (for PlayStation 2)
From: ps2linux-announce@playstation2-linux.com
Dear PlayStation and Linux Enthusiast,
Now is the time to put yourself inside the next generation in computer entertainment! In response to your request for information on LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2), we are excited to let you know that this accessory is now available for pre-order in the United States and Canada* exclusively at http://www.us.playstation.com/?refUrl=linux, with an expected shipping date of May 22, 2002.

Combining the incredible technology of the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system with the endlessly versatile Linux operating system, Linux enthusiasts and programmers can now use the same system they play their favorite PlayStation games on to run thousands of Linux applications! The LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2) accessory kit allows you to utilize the PlayStation 2 console as a fully-functional desktop computer. Download a wealth of Linux programs -- HTML editors, multimedia players, office solutions and more -- or program your own software to run in the PlayStation 2 Linux environment.

Included with the LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2) kit is the PlayStation 2 Linux software, an internal hard disc drive (40 GB), a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet Network Adaptor, and a USB mouse and keyboard. You will still need to purchase or supply a PlayStation 2 console, a 8MB memory card (for PlayStation 2) [preferably a new memory card -- once formatted for Linux use, your game data will be erased and you will not be able to save new game data] and a VGA monitor with sync-on-green capability [check your monitor's user manual to see if it meets this requirement].

While it's exciting to see tremendous interest in this new PlayStation venture, there are a few things for you to note before purchasing. LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2) is a tool for Linux enthusiasts and programming hobbyists. Basic understanding of the Linux operating system is strongly suggested for installation and use. Also, be advised that this accessory will NOT enhance your PlayStation 2 games. The hard disc drive formatted for Linux cannot be used with HDD-compatible PlayStation 2 games, and the included Network Adaptor (Ethernet) does not include a modem, which the upcoming standard Network Adaptor will. Be sure to consider all of these factors before making your decision to purchase.

For more information about LINUX (FOR PLAYSTATION 2), please visit the official PlayStation 2 Linux Community site FAQ at :

http://playstation2-linux.com/faq.php

Once you're ready to immerse yourself into the Linux world via the PlayStation 2 system, click in and pre-order exclusively from PlayStation.com. While supplies last. (ps)

Game: ScummVM CVS Update
Rüdiger Hanke has released a new CVS-snapshot of ScummVM for MorphOS, a program which interprets data files of classic LucasArts adventures, allowing the game to be played on the Amiga. New in this version:

  • "The Secret of Monkey Island" is 100% functional.
  • "Indy 4" can be completed. The "necklace bug" was eliminated.
  • The copy-protection used by "Day of the Tentacle" was overcome, and now the game may be played to the end.
  • Progress was made in supporting "Sam & Max," which is now playable through Bumpusville. Just don't look at the dragon heart and don't switch off the alarm
  • The format for save-games has been changed, so best to start the adventure from scratch.

Coyote Flux

Coyote Flux: JMiner revealed, AuroraRadio online
JMiner, a photogrammetry package developed on the Amiga, has been revealed. This program allows sequence- and image-based correction in three dimensions and can automatically map a two dimensional map from a (special) video stream. Take a look at the JMiner page to find out more!

One thing we would like to mention is that JMiner and the 3D engine are two completely different projects: The 3D objects are compatible with both engines but the renderer is by no means the same. The FPU-based J Miner runs slower when more polygons are added, the integer-based 3D engine will always run at one speed.

AuroraRadio is now officially online and is a Shoutcast radio station dedicated only to quality music. Every style and age of music is played, including Amiga modules and C64 SID music. Currently, the radio station is in its test phase, which means that sometimes the server is down, but under normal circumstances it should be available 24 hours a day...!

There are a lot of other big secret hard- and software projects going on right now, although we cannot say anything about it yet. However, this will change when release dates get closer. Be prepared for something unexpected! (ps)

Sylvio K. wrote:

It's been quiet for a while with SOMS, the action-adventure, because we haven't had any suitable programmers for the Amiga version. Therefore we decided to focus on Gameboy Advance SOMS for the time being.

As soon as we find new programmers for the Amiga version, we'll continue with it. C64 as WWW server
Is there anybody who did not formerly have a C64 as a computer and does not remember with some melancholy the time where you knew the meaning of each bit and byte and could create wonderful things with some magic 20 or 30 written basic lines?

Actually the C64 is past because it is much too small and too weak for the high demands of the Internet-epoch. Nevertheless some C64 still run on Internet.

Here is the address of a WWW-server (title link) which works with a C64. The only extension being added is an interface card with unbelievelable 38400 bps data transfer rate.

The source code is free available and it is a good inspiration for anybody who has to implement an IP-stack on a 8- oder 16 bit computer. (ps) (Translation: dr)
