IFA: Allrounder: Sharp Personal Mobile Tool SL-5000
»The Japanese Sharp company will introduce their new pocket sized Personal Mobile Tool SL-5000
on the IFA 2001. The most important tools of this little allrounder are web-browsers, mobile phone,
e-mail, and a MP3 player. Quick operation of any business task is guaranteed by the 206 MHz Intel
StrongARM processor, 32 MB SDRAM for memory, as well as the operating system Linux OS (kernel 3.4).
The users are forced to access the in many cases unfamiliar display keyboard, since below the operating front,
which can be pulled off, there is a QWERTZ keyboard. Operating time basically is not limited, the different
battery packs can be recharged separately. The SL-5000 can be extended with SD or multimedia cards and
compact flash memory cards. Even a video camera module can be connected to it. But the Personal Mobile Tool
was not made for business purposes only: The cooperation with Amiga Inc. and their wide range of games
make it a small games machine. The device is said to be available at the vendor's from December.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

At last a DVD software player for Amiga?
At last a DVD software player for Amiga? Is it true? Yes, it's AMP2.
"Old stuff!", some of you will say since you have been watching DVD's
using AMP2 or Frogger.
But it's hardly known that the latest beta version of AMP2 has got
direct DVD support including free choice of the video sequence to be played and
the language for sound and sub-titles. All that get's configured by requesters
which pop up one by one, but only works if AMP2 was started from CLI.
Syntax:
ram:AMP window overlay vcddevice scsi.device vcdunit 2 dvd

MUI tutorial
Richard Kapp writes:
Because some users have contacted me because concerning my MUI-configuration and because I asked myself what I have used for it and how I have preferenced it I have decided to put a MUI tutorial online.
In this tutorial I introduce my personal configuration called 'CoolMUI'. Fonts, images and patterns are assumed which you can download from this site. But what I want to achieve with it is that the users may create their own MUI-designs. This tutorial is also meant as a creative motivation. But all those who enjoy the 'CoolMUI'-look of course can assume it.
In addition to it on the site there are useful hints to MUI, useful links and downloads (e.g. patterns which are related to the 'CoolMUI'-configuration and which you can only find on this site). You can also download the tutorial as a LZX-archive for offline reading. Have fun!

Coyote Flux moves to Paris
Since early July 2001 we have moved to Paris to live and do some classified (Amiga) projects. This doesn't mean that our previous projects are discontinued, but like expected these projects are slightly delayed. PPC680x0 2.0 is reaching the final state of development, with several big improvements and bug-fixes in the Floating Point engine and all the additional features from the PPC680x0 page.
The 3D engine is our main focus at the moment, developed to be a games engine as well as professional photogrammetry/mapper software. More information on the 'Mapper' (which is finished) will be released soon as well as some screenshots. Little note about the speed: Both the 68060 (80-bits FPU) and PPC604 (64-bits FPU) versions are written in optimized assembly language and the 604/233MHz runs the same program 15 times faster than the 68060/60MHz which is quite an improvement. The 64-bits FPU 3D engine renders 3 million "real" depthcued polygons in less than 4 seconds using several realtime correction filters.
We are working on an Amiga hardware project as well, although this is currently strictly confidential. Details will be released soon... :-) (ps) (Translation: sk)

Game: New move for H2
Some weeks ago I discovered a new move in H2. I think that this one is not very well known out there. It is a Wirnelattack using the bladecrook.
Just run and beat (you allready know this) and press one of the side-step keys at the same time. This looks realy cool :)
P.S.: To enter the tubes in the swamp just go right and climb to the top of the liana. Turn right and jump onto the trees. Then walk to the end of the trees and use the bladecrook to jump in one of the tubes.

Virus Help Denmark: VirusExecutor V2.20
A new update of VirusdExecutor has been released today.
Here is some info about the update:
Name : VirusExecutor v2.20
Archive name : VirusExecutor.lha
Archive size : 281.228 bytes
Release date : 20 August 2001
Programmer : Jan Erik Olausen
Requires : xvs.library (included), xfdmaster.library, reqtools.library,
xadmaster.library
Changes since last version
2.20
- VE doesn't need the VirusExecutor: assign anymore, so you can delete
some lines in s:user-startup.
IMPORTANT!
All files that comes with VE must be in the same directory where the
main program are located! (Not libraries and catalogs).
- Recoded 'View patch memory'... It's quite similar to the memory
monitor in VirusZ.
- Thanks to Harry, VE do get the right opcodes when checking for
patched functions.
- Added decoding of 4 shell-scripts.
The DKG-Blum and Jode Capullos virus was hiding in such scripts.
- Fixed some 'out of address' bugs while checking memory.
- Added AHI device channel 0 right.
- Fixed small bug in the vector check window, that could cause
strange characters to be displayed.
- Fixed bug when removing a deleted file from the watch list.
- Added close gadget to the prefs window.
- Added 'Fast file checking' to the prefs window.
Activating this flag will disable all text output, memory checking
and some error messages during file checking...
- When the 'Skip encrypted files'-flag are set, encrypted arhives

- Added LVO names to device functions.
- Fixed text out of range bug when viewing memory.
- Fixed Enforcer hit in 'View KickMemPtr/KickMemPtr'.
- When VE is infected with a virus it says it is modified and quits.
Stupid, cause when a virus is around, VE should not quit! Fixed.
- Added powerpc.library recog to 'Soft Int'
- Added COP to memory recog.

Scalos (ANF)
|
Workbench: Scalos Beta V40.10
Beta version 40.10 of the alternative Workbench 'Scalos' was released.
This release in particular fixes several bugs.
Changes since prior version:
- Repaired bug in updateicon which sometimes caused icons to appear in incorrect windows
- Duplicating/cloning items now pops up the file copying progress window
- Dragging multiple icons now shows one or two text lines under pointer telling how many files and
drawers are being dragged
- Fixed severe bug in wbl.c: WBNode's were allocated with AllocVecPooled() and freed with FreeVec()
- Added a varargs version of SCA_ScreenTitleMsg()
- Added flag to switch between Flag: old dragging (all icons visible) and new "icon stack"
- Added new SCA_ScalosControl() tags SCALOSCTRLA_GetOldDragIconMode and
SCALOSCTRLA_SetOldDragIconMode
- IconWinCheckUpdate() now correctly updates INF_DefaultIcon flag and INF_SupportsLeaveOut
attribute
- Missed a CurrentDir() when renaming objects, leading to a directory lock getting never UnLock()ed
- When D&D copying or moving icons, "Replace All" and "Abort" now should work correctly
Message strings "xxx already exists" are now different when moving and copying objects
- When moving icons inside window and new position overlaps other icon, the moved icons now jump
back to their original positions
Bugs can be reported using the
bug report site.

|
AROS: IBM-PC/native on one single floppy disc
Matt Parsons released a new native version of
AROS for IBM-PC compatibles,
which can be installed to one single floppy disc for direct
booting.
This version contains a working format command and allows to
install AROS to a harddisk or partition. With the boot disk
this harddisk installation can be used.
The graphical output still is very simple, so don't expect AROS
to benefit from the speed of your board, at this time.
The readme included to the archive describes how to create
a boot disk under Windows 95+ or Linux.
AROS is an open source project to implement a portable version
of AmigaOS v3.1.

The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition Nr. 1 in USA
Just now some statistics have been released on the Airsoft Softwair
hompage regarding the ´The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition
CD-ROM´. Among other things the different systems of the users have been
evaluated, but also e.g. the countries the CD-ROM has already been sent to. The
most CD-ROMs went to the USA, followed by Great Britain and Germany.
Looking at the systems the most often mentioned one is the A1200, regarding the
processors the 68060 was numbered out by the 68030 narrowly. All
statistics can be viewed on the Airsoft Softwair homepage.

Elbox explains their price policy for driver software
As already reported,
Elbox has announced on the 16.08.2001 a CD with driver software you have to pay
for.
This has led to big and extensive discussions. In the following email Elbox
explains their price policy:
ELBOX Computer explains its policy about driver pricing
1. The purpose of MEDIATOR
To ENABLE the POSSIBILITY of using a wide range of standard
PCI cards.
'The MEDIATOR PCI busboard line is designed to enable expanding
the Amiga with a wide range of standard PCI cards like Graphic
cards, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network cards, Modem cards,
ISDN cards, USB and SCSI cards, Sound cards and Multimedia cards:
TV tuner and MPEG-2 hardware decoders.
Expanding the Amiga with the MEDIATOR PCI busboard opens the way
to employing the power of the latest PowerPC G3/G4 processors
in Amiga, around which SharkPPC and SharkPPC+ cards are based.'
However, it does not mean that we will prepare ALL the possible
drivers for ALL the possible devices and their different versions.
We want to enhance Amiga's effectiveness and give Amiga community
access to low-cost, good and widely-available PCI cards.
As a starter, we have included some drivers in the initial pack
of the Mediator busboard:
PCI Graphic cards: Voodoo5 5500 64MB, Voodoo4 4500 32MB,
Voodoo3 3000 16MB, Voodoo3 2000 16MB, Voodoo Banshee 16
MB, S3 ViRGE 86C325 2MB, S3 ViRGE 86C325 4MB, S3
ViRGE/DX 86C375 2MB, S3 ViRGE/DX 86C375 4MB
PCI Ethernet cards: Winbond 89C940F, RealTek RTL-8029, NetVin
NV5000S.C., Holtek HT80232, Holtek HT80229, Compex RL2000,
SureCom NE34, KTI ET32P2, Via 86C926.
These drivers have never been free. Their price was included in
the original design costs.
New drivers have to be calculated separately because...
2. No commercial software is free
Writing good and versatile software (e.g. Mediator drivers) requires
time and effort, which ultimately means programmers have to receive
good salaries. If users want to be supported in the long run by
any company, they have to pay for its products. Money collected allows
generating new ideas, new designs and new products.
3. Free alternative approach (which we do NOT follow)
Yes, we could offer software for free. We could have bought hundreds
of old-fashioned PCI sound cards just a few Mark per piece
(like e.g. SB Pro). Then we could write drivers to this specific
batch of cards. Easy way, supporting one chipset, one specific card,
branded with our name and marketed as unique. As these cards would
be unique, they would have to priced high enough, say at DM 100.
With "free" drivers, of course.
What's the result? You would buy an OUTDATED low-featured
no-longer-supported card, paying mega-bucks not for the card but
for quick software and huge extra profits for the "manufacturer."
4. Instead we give...
RESPECT. The basic rule with Elbox is that we FIRST develop, design
and test and only when everything is ready and in the final stage
do we announce new products. In other words, we take the risk and
full cost of the designing stage. We do not demand from users making
pre-payments, placing pre-orders, etc. In other words, we respect
the users as full-scale Customers, who deserve to be offered a
final-stage product to choose whether to take it or not, depending
on their needs.
Another basic rule for us is that we prepare universal drivers,
i.e. drivers supporting various chipsets. This ensures faulty-free
support for many different versions of the same card. Writing
software with this prerequisite in mind takes much more time and
tests than writing drivers for one specific chipset/card. But what
we offer is UNIVERSALITY and PERFORMANCE.

Thanks to Petra Struck & Alfred, for sending the archive to us.
Editorial:
As the system of Alfred Sturm, who's responsible for the Aminet uploads here at amiga-news.de,
has been infected yesterday with this aggressive virus through
installing LibBase310.lha and trying it there'll be no updates of the Aminet
uploads in the near future.
The virus has unfortunately not only infected his main partition but also the
partition with his backup. Some infected files are even not deleteable. He's
now forced to install his system from scratch. This may take a while as
laboriously self written scripts have passed away and everything has to be
collected together again. (ps) (Translation: wk)
