AROS: Considerations on MorphOS-compatibility
The developer Jason McMullan who helped to make AROS compatible to the 68k-architecture and to create an AROS-Kickstart-ROMs, is looking for new challenge.

On the developer mailinglist (full quotes below) he asked for the interest in the executability of MorphOS applications under AROS/PPC. For that there also is a bounty project but this was started in 2005. To this time Apple was about to bring computers with Intel processors onto the market. Besides, some money of the donations was used for different AROS bounties.

Jason explained that the API of AmigaOS 4 is very different from AROS and MorphOS, but many AROS-libraries already include stubs for MorphOS-functions beyond the 3.x-API. Additionally source codes has been already shared with MorphOS.

Against this background, he would like AROS to be seen as a kind of transitional solution for MorphOS developers for the source code level. The developers could check their precompiled PowerPC-programms if AROS made available all features which they require. Then they could compile their programms for AROS/x86 as well having the certainty that they only have to fix some possible Endianess-problems.

In his opinion this could result in the option for MorphOS to use AROS as base for a MorphOS/x86 with PowerPC-compatibility with the help of a Rosetta-kind of PPC-to-x86-interface.

Staf Verhaegen complemented that it also could be possible to add the ppcmos und ppcos4 architectures to the AROS/PPC-architecture to be able to offer cpmpatible versions for both operating systems and finally to unite all Amiga systems in a single and open source operating system.

Quotes from the mailing list

Jason McMullan: "OS4's API (interfaces, etc) is very different, structurally, from AROS/MorphOS 4. Many of our libraries already have the MorphOS function stubs for post 3.x APIs. And we already share code with MorphOS.

I would like to see AROS as a 'source level' transition for MorphOS developers, allowing them to run their pre-compiled PPC binaries on AROS PPC (to ensure that AROS supports the services their Application uses), then they can recompile for x86, knowing that they should only need to fix the inevitable endianess issues.

Who knows - maybe MorphOS could contribute a 'Rosetta' style PPC->x86 interface, then they could use AROS x86 as a kernel for a 'MorphOS x86' (with PPC compatability)."

Staf Verhaegen: "To summarize ppc arch would use native packing for all structs and a pointer table for the LVOs without special stub code. ppcmos would apply special packing to structs that need it and provide the MOS LVO table convention for shared libraries.

In the end I would like to have then also a ppcos4 arch that would then be targeted to be OS4 compatible with their interfaces for shared libraries etc. One open source OS to unite them all!" (snx) (Translation: dr)

Emulator: WinUAE 2.4.0
Version 2.4.0 of the Amiga emulator WinUAE has been published.

New features:
  • VSync supported in fastest possible CPU and JIT modes, complete rewrite, fast, 100% jitter free
  • Built-in CD filesystem. Full Amiga CD compatibility, including audio tracks and Amiga Rock Ridge extension, without need for manually installed CDFS, completely replaces old CD option that mounted CD drives as read-only harddrives. NOTE: CD device names renamed to standard CDx: (Old was WinCD_x:)
  • Commodore A2024 monitor emulation (1024*1024 grayscale monitor)
  • Individual Computers Graffiti emulation
  • PCMCIA IDE hardfile emulation
  • USB game controller low latency raw input mode is now the default. (Mouse and keyboard support was already implemented long time ago) Windows Vista and newer only. Custom input mappings may need resetting
  • PC keyboard mode, keys like home, end, pageup, pagedown etc are mapped to Amiga key codes
  • Input configuration qualifier key/button support. Any key or button can be configured as a qualifier and other key mappings can be configured to require one or more active qualifiers
Updates:
  • Programmed screen modes (DBLPAL, Multiscan etc.) display positioning and setup greatly improved
  • Performance improved in fastest possible CPU without JIT mode
  • Performance greatly improved when immediate blitter and fastest possible CPU is enabled and program does lots of small blits
  • Gayle IDE emulation IDE doubler mode compatibility improved
  • Sound syncronization updates, much more stable with VSync (more updates planned in future)
  • Fastest possible CPU mode audio glitch prevention hack updated (WHDLoad IK+, Moonstone, Uridium II, etc.)
  • Added pause emulation/disable sound option to active but mouse uncaptured state
  • RTG emulation optional ZorroII mode
  • UAE harddrive controller RDB harddrive "Do not mount" and "Bootable" options supported
  • Interlace mode handling and switching improved
  • Interlaced fields are matched in vsync modes if both Amiga mode and output device mode are interlaced
  • Lots more options can be modified on the fly using uae-configuration
  • Multiple display adapter/multiple monitor selection and support improved
  • GUI sound buffer range adjusted, non-linear scale, more smaller buffer sizes selectable
  • Joystick/mouse autoswitch also enabled in Input panel non-GamePorts mode
  • Native code execution disabled by default. Enable option in Miscellaneous panel
  • CPU Idle automatic limit added, no more slowdowns if it is set too low
  • Keyboard emulation improved, properly emulated handshake and lost sync state
Bugs fixed:
  • uaenet.device crash if opened without installed winpcap
  • Startup crash if more than 8 serial ports detected
  • Random hangs when switching cycle-exact mode on the fly
  • CD image/physical media change on the fly didn't always trigger notification correctly
  • Lots of bsdsocket emulation compatibility and multi-thread stability fixes (YAM hangs fixed)
  • Directory filesystem reported file size was not updated until file was closed
  • Directory filesystem host-side memory leak fix
  • Some Advanced Chipset options were not correctly overridden in compatibility mode
  • Mouse input stopping working randomly after returning emulation from GUI
  • Emulated middle mouse button got stuck in rawinput mode if middle button was set to untrap mouse
  • Detect and fix bad configuration options when using uae-configuration, for example it was possible to enable both cycle-exact and JIT at the same time causing frozen emulation
  • Rare cycle-exact mode interrupt timing issue. (Guardian Dragon II / Kefrens random hang)
  • Some minimized/inactive/active switching issues
  • Directory harddrives configured as unbootable still booted normally under KS 1.3
  • Windows dialogs (not GUI or file dialogs) were invisible in fullscreen Direct3D mode

AmigaOS 4: Second beta version of Timberwolf
Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden have published a new beta version of their Firefox port "Timberwolf".

This new version improves some features of the first beta, and fixes some of the bugs. In essence, the main improvements are as follows:
  • Splash screen when starting up (to show something is happening)
  • Crash fixes. For example, clicking the zip box no longer crashes
  • Right-click popup menus work now
  • Downloads work now
  • Timberwolf now uses a native ASL file requester instead of the alien file picker

Timberwolf requires AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4. The authors pointed out that before the program is started, the readme - included in the archive - should be read. There you can find important hints for craeting the font caches. (cg) (Translation: dr)

European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects founded
A lot of European initiatives for archiving software and computer games, e.g. the Software Preservation Society - originally called "Classic Amiga Preservation Society" (CAPS) - have founded an umbrella association which is called "European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects" (EFGAMP).

Task of the EFGAMP will be supposed to be the improvement of the technical and regulatory framework for archiving interactive digital contents. Those tasks are to be achieved by lobbying as well as networking and exchanging knowledge with other projects. (cg) (Translation: dr)
