Downloadmanager: Charon V1.98
Well, believe it or not, it's been released. Available from my
homepage or from Aminet in a couple of days.
Version 1.98 (6.1.2002)
- Introduced the concept of groups. Now each URL can belong to
a group and will take that group's settings as its default
settings. A new URL is by default placed in the group in
which the active entry indicator is currently found.
- Completely rewritten URL parsing routine which resulted in a
large speed up. This speed up would be even larger, but the
URL comparison routine was changed from simple string compare
to full-blown URL comparison routine which works properly.
- Rewritten detection of duplicates in the list. The code is now
much faster and works for any number of duplicates, unlike in
the last version.
- Charon now remembers the length of the file on server and
shows it all the time (if it is available).
- Many improvements and some fixes in the HTML parsing routine.
- Addressed some security issues.
- There's now a special treatment for %2F URL escape code (/)
because there are some filesystems that allow / in a filename.
- Added support for ftp://.../file;type=x URLs.
- When automatically creating filenames from the URL, %xx
sequences are now decoded.
- There's a new section in the documentation describing some
"hidden" features. Charon's tooltypes/arguments (LOG and
SETTINGS) are documented there.
- It is now possible to log all HTTP headers that were sent or
received through Charon for debugging purposes. More about
this in the advanced section of the manual.
- There's a new configuration option which tells Charon not to
read the size of the files on the disk during the startup thus
speeding it up. More about this in the advanced section of
the manual.
- DOS requesters are now blocked while the list of entries is
being loaded in order to prevent a bunch of the "Please
insert ..." requesters from a appearing if one of your drives
is dismounted.
- New gadget "Move & start" in HTML links and Internet search
windows.
- Changed the way Charon shortens the filenames when "Max
filename length" option comes into action.
- Changed the way the "Directory structure" option works. It now
also takes into consideration the name of the host.
- When a file is downloaded and Charon needs to check if there
are any queued files to be started, they are first searched
for in the same group in which the downloaded file was.
- Some changes in ARexx interface as a result of introduction
of groups.
- Updated some and removed some searches from Internet search
window. Ideas for possible additions are welcome.
- Fixed a bug in parsing dates in HTTP headers.
- Fixed a rare bug in display of percentage of the downloaded
file.
- Too long FTP paths would cause a crash while sending a
request. Fixed.
- Fixed a small memory leak during that occured only when Charon
was started from the shell.
- Charon would report that it couldn't resume a transfer when a
file had already been downloaded fully.
- SET Arexx command wasn't working properly for ages, fixed.

re-directed to the corresponding URLs of the new site.
The online-manual of the VarIO interface board is now available in

Virus Help Denmark: Safe V17.7, Integrity V1.2
Version 17.1 of the virus detector "Safe" by Zbigniew Trzcionkowski was released. "Safe" recognizes viruses in memory and removes them if possible.
Safe contains a bugfix and the packet was splitted into three parts:
"Safe", "Integrity" und "WatchDog".
Changes:
- Bugfix: Fixed "mislooks" in VECS, SAVEMEM and DIS
anyway, seems only I use these options...
"Safe" runs on AmigaOS 2.04+ and requires xvs.library.
"Integrity" is a disk tool displaying any file added, deleted or changed since the last time "Integrity" was launched.
This is helpful to discover viruses / trojans in the system, but information also can be used to remove recently installed but not desired files, such like fonts, libraries, etc..
"Integrity" runs on AmigaOS v2.04+, the MMU version requires mmu.library.

Amiga: NDK V3.9 released
Since Friday the update of the native developer kit on AmigaOS 3.9
is available for download at the AmigaOS 3.9 area of amiga.com.
The NDK v3.9 bases on the NDK 3.5 released on "Amiga Developer CD 2.1" and
is in part identical with this.
The example programs are mostly the same, as well as the tutorials and tools.
C headers and assembler headers, linker libraries, autodocs, and ARexx interface
documentaions for the Workbench have been updated. New are the "release note files"
and the so called "sfd files".
amiga.lib stubs, clib prototyp header-, pragma header,
and .fd files are all generated by the sfd files.
As an example tool for processing sfd files "sfd" is included in the tools
directory - but, one can also use third-party tools like "fd2pragma" (by Dirk Stöcker).
Note: sfd files of this release have been "sanified", meaning protected and internal
data are left out.
C header files have been cleared and their syntax were verified again. They now compile
problemless with SAS/C and GCC, even if all compiler warnings are enabled.
This release contains no specific GGC header files, but this might change in future
updates.
As of this writing, the specific requirements for GCC on the
native 68k and on the PowerPC platforms are still somewhat
uncertain. To the best of our knowledge, the compiler specific
header files would have covered the ROM interface, that is, the
pragma header files only. As the "sfd" files are provided with this
distribution, you should be able to rebuild your platform specific
header files yourself, or obtain a set from your compiler vendor.
This NDK update also represents a milestone regarding the assembler
header files. With this release these are no longer guaranteed to by
synchron to their counterparts in C.
Questions, bugreports, and wishes regarding the NDK 3.9 should be send directly
to that person, who created this updated: Olaf Barthel.
Thanks to all who contributed to this update, including
Martin Blom, Don Cox, James Jacobs, Gunther
Nikl, Alastair M. Robinson, Matt Sealey, Steven Solie, Martin
Steigerwald, Dirk Stöcker, Neil William, and others!

XAD-System Version 11
After a long time again a new release of archive extractor system XAD.
This system supports 93 filearchive, diskarchive and filesystem formats
nowadays (LZX, LhA, DMS, CAB, Zip, Rar, Ace, Arj, Wrapster, HA, ADF,
...). The most important new formats may be StuffIt, MacBinary, BinHex,
C64 filesystems and the SmartFileSystem. Thanks a lot to my three most active
supporters. XAD is still (relatively cheap) shareware. And there is
still a special price for OS 3.9 users wanting to update.

Psyria: Defender of the Crown title song for mobile phones
Dennis Lohr of Psyria has received the permission of Jim Cuomo to
convert the title song of Defender of the Crown for mobile phones.
Everyone with a phone with note editor can now enter the melody of
Defender of the Crown:
4C5, 8C.5, 16D5, 2C5, 4G5, 8G.5, 16A5, 2G5, 4F5, 4E5, 4D5,
4C5, 4E5, 8B.4, 16B4, 2B4, 4C5, 8C.5, 16D5, 2C5, 4G5, 8G.5,
16A5, 4G.5, 16F5, 16E5, 8F5, 8E5, 8D5, 8C5, 8F5, 8E5, 8D5,
8C5, 4E5, 8B.4, 16B4, 2B4, 4F5, 8F5, 8F5, 8G5, 8G5, 8A5,
8G5, 4C6, 8C.5, 16C5, 4C5
The first number is the note type:
1= full
2= half
4= quarter
8= quaver
16= sixteenth
The letter stands for the note itself (long with a "." where necessary). The third
number stands for the note height (octave). You are usually in octave 5 after
starting the editor.
The user should choose the speed for the piece himself since every mobile phone
varies the speed differently. For a Siemens mobile phone for example the optimal
speed would be "03".

Encyclopedia mentiones the Amiga
The "Multimedia-Encyclopedia 2002", which can be purchased at Aldi (German
discounter), is reading about the Amiga:
»Amiga
Home computer developed in the 80th by the company Amiga, then distributed
by Commodore with Motorola processors. Popular home computers of the Amiga line
are the models Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000. More efficient versions of the Amiga
also could be utilized for more challenging projects (Amiga 2000 and Amiga 4000).
Amiga was taken over by the German trade chain Escom, then by the US company
Viscorp, and finally by the company Amino, but though several announcements
were made no new Amiga products were launched, so far.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

AGC failed
Unfortunately there has not been much interest in my attempt to found the AGC (Amiga Guide Community). I intended to create a common basis for all those who like to work with the AmigaGuideFormat. I was also going to create a website which should have contained all publications of the AmigaGuideFormat that have been ever written.
Some of the active AmigaGuide writer answered very pleased but nobody could help me realizing the project so I stopped it in summer 2001.
Up to now I did not have the time to publish this sad message. Sad because the AmigaGuideFormat is underestimated of most of the Amiga users although it is used very often. However, maybe there is somebody who is interested in. I still have not thrown away my notices of this project.
