Dreamworlds Development is Looking for One More Musician
Because Audun Evensen (our musician up to now) does not have enough time anymore we have decided to engage another musician. She/He should get along with each possible kind of music, work on time, be well up in editing samples and of course should be interested in games. Having a sampler, good hardware (PPC) and knowledge in English are advantageous but not necessary. Of course you are participated in proceeds from the sales. First (and urgent) music for Crossfire II is needed. Here is Techno or something like that sufficient. It`s all right if different kinds of music are used provided that it fits to hard action. :) I prefer stirring classical music but it is hard to handle with the computer. Furthermore some intermediate progression have to set to music (own format). After finishing CF2 (if a further co-operation is desired) we need right music (medieval, atmospheric, classical, sometimes rock music) instead of Techno for our next game called "Between The Lines", a role-playing in real time. Those ones who are interested in (or have any questions) please mail to stefan@dreamworlds.de with a demo work or state an internetaddress where I can find such a sample. A few information about yourself and your hardware configuration would be useful.

Interview with Frank Mariak

Author: Team amiga-news.de
Interviewpartner: Frank Mariak from Vision Factory Developments
Translator: Martina Jacobs (Interview in German)

amiga-news.de: If we understood right, there are two different kinds of drivers under development: CGX VIRGE V3 driver, and CGX Voodoo driver. What is the technical difference between those, and which driver is meant for which product.

Frank Mariak: Those drivers are designed for two PCI boards completely different from each other. On the one side for the VIRGE/DX chip set, which was already utilized on the CyberVision64/3D, but in the meanwhile became somehow anterior. This still appears to be a good and cheap compromise for Amiga considering 2D performance. The Voodoo driver of course is meant for the Voodoo3 chip set by 3dfx. This one offers remarkable enhanced 3D performance in comparison to the CVisionPPC/BVisionPPC boards (if used along with a PPC processor), and even more 2D performance, than the CyberStorm/Blizzard graphics accelerators with Permedia2 chip set.

amiga-news.de: What will support of 3D capabilities be like?

Frank Mariak: There will be no special support from CyberGraphX. At all events for MorphOS there will be a modulated 3D extension basing on Rave for the Voodoo boards. The Warp3D team has said to be interested in modulating the 3D hardware, but unfortunately I don't know very much about the 3D development state.

amiga-news.de: Please, illustrate in some more detail the (alleged?) technical problems with developing Voodoo drivers for the Mediator board.

Frank Mariak: I have to admit that initially I programmed the Voodoo driver on the PCI interface extension for my CyberStorm PPC board and then just tried to make it running on the Mediator board. Originally I used that PCI extension for developing Permedia2 CVision/BVisionPPC drivers more than two years ago, since the prototype board of these boards was a PCI card for Apple PowerMac. Due to this the current Voodoo driver worked with this PCI extension port at first, the modulation for the Mediator board then was done supplementary. The announced G-REX extension rather is just a reworked 4 slot variant of this 1 slot test board. Since I don't have that extended development system on the ELBOX case as I have on my A4000T, I always only tested functionality of the driver with the Mediator board. The technical problems in the meantime have been discussed extensive on miscellaneous nets. Basically one may say that the mystified "bank-switching problem" doesn't cause any trouble, as long as only one CPU (e.g. 68k) is concerned. Also a PowerPC-only operating system (which emulates 68k-code) should cause no problems.

amiga-news.de: Does the cooperation agreement with Elbox still exist, and if not, due to what reason and by whom was it canceled?

Frank Mariak: I definite did not cancel the agreement. After all one may not forget that ELBOX products are covering a much bigger target group than extensions like G-REX do, which are designed only for the special LocalBus on the Blizzard/CyberStrom accelerator boards. But I agree that the timing of the G-REX announcement was quite disadvantageous. I'm already in contact with DCE since more than one year, and since then to bring a successor graphics board for the current Permedia2 products was looked ahead. DCE and me, we set the seal on developing Voodoo3 driver signing a contract now, so Thomas Dellert has planning reliability, and also I would not come out of with with empty hands. There never has been such a contract with Elbox, there has just been some kind of declaration of intent on cooperation with an option of a possible Voodoo driver, since in these days it was not to foresee if such a driver really would work. This was meant to be that I would create free limited CGX3 drivers which then would be delivered along with the Mediator board. I then should be responsible of "bringing in" my input myself by selling the CGX4 CDs. In the meanwhile I ask myself, how I could agree with this. In the view of stagnating software sells (CGX 4 CD), software pirates, and continuous requests from ELBOX when at last a somehow working Voodoo driver for the Mediator board would be available, I felt extremely pressurized. In the end and moreover one should not forget that at this time Mediator boards are alowed to be delivered along with a free CGX3 VIRGE driver, and will be in the future. Even after DCE's release there was an update for this driver, so there should not be any talking about canceled cooperation.

amiga-news.de: Why did you decide an exclusive agreement?

Frank Mariak: Only this way a really satisfying solution for customers can be gained. Only licensing makes it possible to support a product in an optimal way. In my notion that was never eligible with ELBOX.

amiga-news.de: Does the exclusiveness of the Voodoo driver concern GGX3 or CGX4 or even both of these?

Frank Mariak: I don't understand that panic about the current Voodoo driver, at all. Is the Mediator board a slot for a Voodoo graphics board or a 4x PCI slot adapter? People might better ask themselves where are the announced drivers for the Yamaha sound card, the 100MBit network card or the MPG decoder card. In place of focusing on completion of this driver a PCI PPC G3/G4 extension was announced wholehearted which virtually automatically converts the Mediator board to a data-thruput-"high-achiever". The Amiga world has seen themselves how long it took come to some state of being error free on 603/604e processors with PowerUP or the subsequent competitor WarpOS. A G3/G4 software solution shall suddenly appear for Amiga within two months? I don't want to further comment this, but I entertain some doubt.... I just can wish the ELBOX company much success with that. They at least developed a 68030 accelerator board or have this under their present offer.

amiga-news.de: Does this agreement also mean that there will be no Voodoo CGX drivers for Predator by Eyetech? (Which seems to be quite similar to the G-REX.)

Frank Mariak: No, as a matter of principle nothing avoids respective license for the drivers.

amiga-news.de: Can the drivers be used with every standard board or only with tested boards (compatibility list provided)?

Frank Mariak: In the case of e.g. Voodoo3 the boards available are substantially of the same assembly. But basically it is recommended to use only tested boards since else function of the drivers cannot be guaranteed. This is what I feel to be a significant problem with the at this time available/released PCI port extensions. When I purchase a PCI card for a PC, I will get a driver adapted to this card along with this card. An Amiga user doesn't have such opportunity if he purchases a PCI card in some shop. Many people simply underestimate the software problem. Even on a WindowsPC this is often solved dissatisfying and you get put off with half done drivers. When I purchased for a ZorroII/III extension I was able to call the manufacturer to account, if hardware/software did not run as it should do, and the manufacturer was able to respond if necessary. Thus also now only tested products should be used or the respective board should be ordered from an Amiga stockist right away to at least reasonably play safe.

amiga-news.de: Does CGX v5 for MophOS represent a complete rewrite of version 4 with enhanced routines or is this a 1:1 port?

Frank Mariak: The drawing routines as well as the drivers where almost entirely newly developed, since CGX4 still uses assemlber optimesed 68k routines which of course can be used emulated only with a PPC.

amiga-news.de: Can CGX be further adopted to WarpOS or PowerUp or can it be further optimised for those? And if, is there hope for this to happen?

Frank Mariak: No, there will be no further adoption to or optimisation for PowerUp or WarpOS.

amiga-news.de: Will there be a 68k version of CGX v5?

Frank Mariak: No, the advantages/enhancements of version 5 only make sense along with a PPC OS e.g. like MorphOS. The 68k variant will stay to be version 4, and independent from V5 will be further developed/enhanced. CGX v5 in conjunction with the current MorphOS test version will be developed and enhanced continuously.

amiga-news.de: Frank, thank you very much for this interview and for your extended answers.

Elbox Insider Report
A summary of the ongoings around the CGX driver for Voodoo3 from Elbox' point of view:

INSIDER REPORT
ELBOX COMPUTER
http://www.elbox.com
Krakow, 17 Oct 2000

In brief

In July 2000, ELBOX Computer and Frank Mariak (VFD) negotiated and
agreed upon writing drivers for MEDIATOR PCI busboard.

Frank Mariak agreed to write the software with hardware and technical
documentation provided to him by ELBOX Computer as requested by him.
He had never asked for cash reimbursement and never asked for making
cash-based contract.

Frank Mariak was to write drivers dedicated for ELBOX hardware,
to the order of ELBOX, based on an agreement between ELBOX
and himself.

Frank Mariak's long-term benefit was spreading and popularising
his commercial product: CGX4.

Ultimately, Frank Mariak sold rights to these drivers in exclusive
form to a third party, who are not affiliated with ELBOX Computer
in any way. This transaction, with the following use of confidential
ELBOX documentation within third-party agreements is clear-cut
breach of commercial law in any country in the world.

This step was thought to block developing highly-demanded software
for Amiga computers.

ELBOX Computer decided to clear this situation up in the following
report.

The last part of the report announces software solutions to make
good the damage caused by Frank Mariak's decisions.

On Saturday, 14 Oct 2000

community of Amiga users were informed that an agreement was signed
by virtue of which Mr. Frank Mariak (Vision Factory Development)
transferred exclusive rights to Voodoo PCI drivers written by
himself to a third party.

We, ELBOX Computer, feel obliged to make the entire situation clear
to Amiga users world-wide, as the circumstances around this event
are twisted again and again and give false image of the situation
to public opinion.

Please find the below report as the clarification of what has been
transpiring in the recent weeks behind the scenes.

Background

On 24 July 2000, Elbox Computer and Vision Factory Development
jointly released an announcement on concluding an agreement,
by virtue of which VFD undertook to develop support for PCI graphic
cards installed in the MEDIATOR PCI busboard.
(See http://www.vgr.com/mediator/pressrelease1.txt )

Before this agreement was concluded, both parties negotiated
and finally decided on some specific terms and conditions of
co-operation as follows:

The key point of the agreement was that support for PCI graphic
cards in CGX3 was to be devoid of hardware acceleration, which
was to be fully developed in the CGX4 commercial version.

The parties decided to make the following commitments:

1. ELBOX Computer shall make the developer's documentation for
the MEDIATOR PCI busboard available in order to complete the
   agreed work.

The developer's documentation was transferred to
Mr. Frank Mariak on 14 July 2000.

2. ELBOX Computer will provide Vision Factor Development with
computer hardware for preparing drivers for PCI graphic cards
installed in the MEDIATOR PCI 1200 busboard, which Mr. Mariak
   needed at that time.

ELBOX Computer sent the hardware: Amiga 1200 in E/BOX tower
with the developer's MEDIATOR PCI 1200 busboard, 1240 turbo
card, FastATA 1200 controller, a hard disk and other necessary
add-ons as well as S3 ViRGE and Voodoo3 PCI cards to
Mr. Frank Mariak on 07 Aug 2000. Another computer hardware
set was delivered to VFD team last week.

3. Vision Factory Development shall develop support for graphic
cards operating in the MEDIATOR PCI busboard. Support for
S3 ViRGE and Voodoo3 chipsets was agreed upon as the minimum.

      S3 Virge:
ELBOX Computer received a test version of an S3 ViRGE card
driver (enabling starting Workbench in the S3 ViRGE PCI card)
      from Vision Factory Development on 18 July 2000;
S3 ViRGE drivers are currently available.

      Voodoo3:
ELBOX Computer received a test version of Voodoo3 drivers
for MEDIATOR PCI for presentation purposes (allowing for
operation with Workbench) on 29 Sep 2000.

4. ELBOX Computer, after starting the production of the MEDIATOR PCI
busboard shall deliver a bundled free package of CyberGraphX v.3
along with drivers for all the currently supported PCI graphic
   cards.

ELBOX Computer is now selling the MEDIATOR PCI busboard
through the network of its distributors world-wide.
CGX3 is bundled with MEDIATOR PCI. This is an excellent
advertising move for the commercial CGX4.

Before the agreement

ELBOX offered Mr. Frank Mariak that our programmers would prepare
drivers for various graphic chipsets, including Voodoo3 PCI, for
working with CyberGraphX. Such drivers would then be transferred in
the form of source codes written in assembler for Mr. Frank Mariak's
authorisation and distribution. We expected only making available
some developer's information related to CGX in return.

However, Mr. Mariak decided he would himself write the drivers
if we supported him with hardware and documentation. Which we did.

False information

in the announcement on selling rights to Voodoo drivers included
alleged expected technical problems related to implementation
of 3D drivers with our MEDIATOR PCI busboard.

Please note that none such problems exist. On our request,
Mr. Mariak was to report to us any possible problems related
to his development work… and he remained silent all the time.

Using Developer's Documentation

for MEDIATOR PCI and computer hardware (including Voodoo3 PCI card)
provided free of charge by ELBOX Computer as requested by Mr. Frank
Mariak for writing Voodoo3 drivers, as it turned out, for another
company is the clearest form of breaching rules of social life
and business honesty and integrity.

New business vision

On 13 Oct 2000, Mr. Frank Mariak signed an agreement on selling
the Voodoo3 drivers for benefit of another company. In contacts
with our company, Mr. Frank Mariak never mentioned any intention
of this kind on his part, never suggested such a possibility
and never asked for or negotiated any payment for his software
writing work. He never contacted us in this issue.

Then, out of the blue, he surprised us and all Amiga users with
making a "simple BUSINESS DECISION" (original quotation from
Mr. Mariak's response to our inquiry for explanation of the
VFD & DCE's announcement) on making an alliance with a third
party for selling the above rights.

We hope this explanation clarifies the situation.

Please make sure that we refrain from any comments of ethical
or whatever nature. The above are simple facts to make you all
aware of the plot behind the scenes.

ELBOX MOVES FORWARD

In the view of the circumstances described above, ELBOX Computer
hereby announces that our programmers shall prepare software
for supporting Voodoo3 cards in the MEDIATOR PCI busboards.
These drivers will be included in the software package for the
MEDIATOR PCI busboard. We expect completing work on the first
version of this software within two weeks.

V³, AmTelnet, Microdot-1-Source
Oliver Wagner has released on October 14th, 2000 in .plans on the V³ portal site information regarding the current state of development of the web browser. The V³ development proceeds well. Frames are supported again, and the tuning of the deeper integrated layer- and cliprects-routines gave a relevant speed boost for output and scrolling.

Soon there'll be a new release version after David Gerber has finished the configurable popup menus.

Of AmTelnet there's a test version which is supposed to fix the problems with Z-modem-transfers in conjunction with Miami - or maybe not.

Besides that Oliver Wagner has released the source code for MicroDot-1 (not 2).

On October 15th, 2000 Richard H. Poser has released the beta version 0.9396 of AmigAIM. This program makes it possible to use the AOL-Instant-Messenger-system "AIM". Compared to the previous version the following has changed:
  • I think I isolated the problems with the Password being saved improperly, Capitalization and Spacing in ScreenName used for signon should no longer matter - I found that an Earlier built in data conversion was attempting a conversion anyway if spaces were used in the ScreenName in the Signon. I call the problem, the "amazingly growing password"
  • I also now restrict the length of the ScreenName and PassWord entry blocks to a maximum of 16 characters (Longest AIM will allow anyway. Not sure why I hadn't done this already)

AROS

AROS: Development Status
On oktober 11th, 2000 AROS has released a status report about the current status of this Open Source project. The changes concern mainly the AROS version for x86 computers.

Cleaning-up of the AROS source tree by Bernardo Innocenti, simple hardfile support of FFS formatted floppy disks (ADF) by Georg Steger, and better mouse support for AROS native/x86 by Tobias Seiler (mouse buttons work now). Georg threw in some additional code to change the position of the mouse pointer on the screen, and now you can move the window around. Since VGA.HIDD doesn't support the XOR drawing mode, yet there is still some graphics garbage when you move the window, but that should be fixed, soon.

StarOffice-Sourcecode Released
Sun has released the source code of StarOffice as Open Source on October 13th, 2000. This is the pre-release of StarOffice 6.0. The further development of the package has been handed over to the OpenOffice-Project.

The source code is 400 MByte in size, and is available for download at the OpenOffice website for download. It contains 35,000 files which count all together some 9 million lines of C++ code. A Pentium III computer with 256 MB RAM and Linux would need some 20 hours to compile the package. The space required on the harddrive will grow up to 2 GByte while doing this. Currently supported are Windows, Linux, and Solaris. A version for Mac OsX, which is said to be still in an earlier stade, should follow.

Sun themself will still participate in developing the Office package in the future through their development department in Hamburg, and release official StarOffice versions basing on OpenOffice. Those will also contain components which Sun has acquired from thrid party companies and thus are not part of the OpenOffice package. These components include the spell checker, the thesaurus and the database Adabas D.

News about SView-Ports
SuperView is a well known graphics converting and viewing tool well knwon of the Amiga. The author Andreas Kleinert is working on porting SView to other systems, and publishes a status report:

The GUI preview of the planned WinSView tool kit still is at alpha state while subject of intensive development. Hence it still is not available, but by this you will get some initial impression on what it is about.

Development takes place on two levels:
  • 1. The underlying C++ class library for image handling (loading, saving)
  • 2. The program surface (GUI) in form of a MFC 4.1-based design

Both originally were developed using Watcom C/C++ - for the class library part and for testing it we use the Watcom C/C++ V11 ability to develop 32 bit software for the Win9x/NT character mode (DOS box), and for the GUI part BlueSky's Visual Programmer is utilized.

But the design of the C++ classes is completely platform independent (e.g. regarding endianess) and suitable to be ported for a wide range of operating systems, e.g. certain Linux derives, BeOS or QNX. Additionally, no compiler specific C++ specialities are used ("baseline C++") and utilization from a clean C program is no problem.
More infos can be found at the title link.

Elbox: SHARK ATTACK
Detailed information from Elbox about their new PowerPC processor boards for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000. Announced are PPC G3/G4 boards named SHARK with various processors which can be fitted into the MEDIATOR PCI A1200 and MEDIATOR PCI A3/4000 bus boards:

Date Thu, 12 Oct 2000 23:59:45 +0200
From ELBOX press@elbox.com
Subject SHARK ATTACK

ELBOX COMPUTER
Krakow, 12 October 2000

ELBOX COMPUTER is proud to announce the breath-taking new product: the
most powerful PowerPC accelerator for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000.

The new accelerator - SharkPPC G3/G4 board - is a pure PowerPC-based
processor card to be fitted in MEDIATOR PCI A1200 and MEDIATOR PCI
A3/4000 busboards.

SharkPPC G3/G4 cards give Amiga Classic computers the top performance of
the latest PowerPC technology and the power of the long-awaited next
generation computer.

New PowerPC750 processors installed in SharkPPC G3/G4 cards offer the
following performance: 17.4SPECint95@400MHz, 11.7SPECfp95@400MHz,
928DMIPS@400MHz, 22.4SPECint95@550MHz, 13.3SPECfp95@550MHz,
1276DMIPS@550MHz.

The SharkPPC G3/G4 design combines speed of PowerPC G3/G4 processors
with extremely fast on-board memory interface controlling two SDRAM
modules, up to 512MB each. The peak memory transfer rate reaches
582MB/s. The accelerator card takes control over the PCI busboard with a
66MHz PCI 2.1 compliant interface fitted with a two-channel DMA
controller.

Communication between the existing Amiga turbo accelerator and the
SharkPPC G3/G4 card is executed with the shared SDRAM memory and the
interrupt controller in the MEDIATOR PCI hardware. The new accelerator
offers excellent bandwidth to any PCI card: 264 MB/s (132 MB/s in the
system with 33 MHz PCI cards). This powerful performance in PCI graphic
cards enables development of new superb games/graphic applications in
the native PPC code.

All the currently available Amiga software may be executed in the 68k
processor with full use of all the PCI cards installed in the computer.
It is possible because both accelerator cards installed in the computer
access all the PCI cards independently.

On top of that, in new applications to be developed both accelerators
may enhance performance of each other just the same way as it is done in
advanced multi-processor systems. This is due to the fact that
processors in both accelerators (68k/PPC and SharkPPC) work fully
simultaneously, which is for the first time available for Amiga users.

The first SharkPPC G3/G4 cards for developers will be available by end
of November, with production planned to commence in January 2001.

When new speed versions of PowerPC processors are available, the
SharkPPC line will be expanded with more models.

The suggested retail price (VAT excl.) for the SharkPPC G3/G4
accelerators are:

SharkPPC G3/G4 750@400................ EUR 390.00
(PowerPC750@400MHz and 256KB@400MHz L2 Cache)

SharkPPC G3/G4 750@550................ EUR 520.00
(PowerPC750@550MHz and 256KB@550MHz L2 Cache)

Pricing of versions with other processors will be announced separately.

NEW

Please look for our further releases:

1. Development progress of PCI Sound and TV card drivers for MEDIATOR
PCI 1200.

2. MEDIATOR development line (A4000 and A3000).

As we had to realize this afternoon the owner of our domain was, pretending wrong facts, renamed to Mr. Schönfeld by the internet provider Schlund.

The internet pages viewed at the domain which was up to now our domain, have nothing to do with our company, and also every e-mail to the addresses of VMC are sent to Mr. Schönfeld directly, by-passing the mail secret.

Because of this we ask all of the customers to send their e-mails to our usbshop.de domain which means to you, just to change the name vmc.de into usbshop.de in the e-mail addresses for the next days.

According to information via telephone by Individual Computers Jens Schonefeld will use this campaign to force a better position of him to the company VMC Harald Frank regarding wholesale prices for VMC driver software.»

MPF: Information Appliances
At the Microprocessor Forum 2000 in San Jose, USA, an all day opening lecture on the subject information appliances took place given by Steve Leibson, chief analyser of MicroDesign Resources and chief editor of the microprocessor report.

After main-frames, mini-computer, micro-computers, and PCs the fifth computer generation comes into public view by the IAs. Appliances of this generation distinguish on application oriented design. Meaning design and functionality of these appliances is styled for one application, e.g. in the case of web-pads on the internet or in case of game consoles on easy gaming using your TV-set. This causes self describing operation and hence easy use of this appliances.

The article (German) on tecchannel.de summarizes the lecture in view of types of appliances, Connectivity (Bluetooth, IrDA, etc.), processors, as well as displays, and gives a result at the end of the article. This result complains about that manufacturers tend to implement too much features in their initial IAs. By this operation again becomes complicated, and prices increase which automates failure, according to Steve Leibson.

A Lot of Eternity News
Some things are changing at Eternity, but in main everything will stay the same: Eternity is and will keep being Amiga vendor, Amiga publisher, and distributor of Amiga hardware and software.

This news is most important:

The URL has changed!
http://www.eternity-computer.de from now on is the new online home of Eternity. Please change your bookmarks! Many thanks to Marc Albrecht for hosting the Eternity pages free of charge for several years.

To make getting used to the new URL more easy for users we have raised another of our popular special projects:
For orderings within the next two weeks the customer will get 1 DM discount on every of his/her order already placed in 2000. With this we want to thank our many faithful customers and want to give them a very special bonus.

EAsys! Servicepack 3
For the system enhancer EAsys! distributed by Eternity service-pack 3 was released. This fixes many little bugs, and automatic creation of icons is implemented. Who wants to learn about the other new features should get it soon.

MASplayer
The MASplayer which we distribute since early this month already sells well. Happily our customers are not dumb, so we received some suggestions on additional possible use of the MASplayer:
  • MPEG-Movie-Player could surrender playing of sound completely to the MAS and thereby would have to deal almost only with playing the movie.
  • Internet-Phone would be possible with acceptable speed and quality also on Amigas.
  • Internet-Radio via MASplayer is already under construction.

Interested software authors can contact us via e-mail to eternity@pride.de. We heavily support developers.

Free co-workers wanted:
Eternity Hard- & Software is looking for a free co-worker who would independent deal with project coordination around Eternity's activities. Good knowledge of English (speaking and writing) are advantageous. Interested people would contact eternity@pride.de, please.

New DirectDos Demo Available
Marius Schwarz wrote: It has been announced for a long time: DirectDos (the new Workbench feeling) is available in a improved version with many new functions and many bug fixes. The new functions are for example remember, iconifying, new rename functions, and much more. Remember starts the DirectDos-tasks automatically again after rebooting the computer, which helps you to continue to work no matter if the reset was your intention or a crash of the system. But the best of all is lower price: Instead of paying 50 DM for the program it now costs only 30 DM from version 1.02. Please download the demo from the Aminet or my website. This one will move to a new server in the next time. Therefore the programm is possibly not available all the time. The link will be the same.

Milan Computer

Statement on Milan II
Even other systems (in this case Atari user) have to face disappointments. Milan II was put on hold. One now wants to make the operating system Atari-TOS (incl. MagiC) hardware independent by means of Linux. Then programs will be coded for one time and will run everywhere, which sure appears to be well known to Amiga users. Here some extract from the statement by Milan Computer, which is to read as full length (German) at the title link:

«Perspectives today are good on the one hand, and disappointing on the other hand: The Milan II was put on hold. Month of work eating thousands of Deutsch Marks disappeared as well as the hope of many Atari users to have their own and fast Milan II soon. This is primary to assign to technical difficulty. Moreover trying to find venture capital companies from Germany to increase fund remarkable over month failed. In this country at this time primary internet buildings in the air are supported and created, building fictitious million value from scratch to crash down as fast as it raised most of the time. One of the realy seldom companies able to offer their own small operating system provided with much of software unfortunately bears the big risc for the investors to provoke costs by matter manufacturing (main boards, etc.).

But this does not mean the end of the project, at all. Milan-Computersystems will continue to offer the Milan I with 040 processor to all of the people wanting a Milan today. And also the upgrade board to the 060 processor is still available and stable in the meantime. In fact there is nothing in the way to a Milan with 060 processor at this time.

Now the step which will be taken is to look towards Milan III. Therefore at this time there are two scenarios to choose from all of them banking on that the Milan-TOS (and with it the addon MagiC-Milan) to be able to be nearly hardware independent soon.
  • A. One elects a Linux kernel adaptation to e.g. AMD hardware (Athlon, Duron) and standard board peripheral equipment. Along with this a board will be chosen which just has to be imported in this country. If requirement like a big flash eprom are fulfilled this can be a TOS basing computer as before starting directly from chip. Performance with this solution would increase proportional to the used processor and with a 400MHz would have a much higher performance than a 060 processor.
  • B. One uses a (in case of need own) PPC G3/G4 board which is more close to the 68060 processor, so that from 350 MHz more than double performance would be gained.

To make TOS running on these processors an 68k interpreter will be integrated, in difference from a Windows or MacOS emulation running independent native making high performance possible.»

Hellcoders Homepage Announces Game Project
On the Hellcoders' homepage a new game was announced. The plot of the space game is described as the follows: You have captured a small space vehicle which approaches other ships camouflaged. You can gain points if you beam yourself into a ship, kill the crew and sell the whole equipment at the black market.

The game would have nice inter-sequences. According to the news the graphics and movies are in progress. One may be curious about the announced initial screen shots.

AMI Sector One

AMI Sector One Extended
Welcome to another update of AMI Sector One. Today there is something of interest for both emulator fans and Amiga users. But first of all let us begin with the new features written by Bernd:
Microdeal - A resume: This article is about the hardware and software company Microdeal which disappeared in 199?.
Amiga Games vs. Amiga Joker: Here I compare two issues of these popular Amiga games related magazines.

The update continues with the new games Tanglewood (thanks to the author Ian Murray-Watson who allowed us to upload it), Tie-Break (thanks to the author Andreas Seebeck), Wrath of Gwendor and the request Wizzy's Quest (English version). Besides the ADF of Wikinger 2 has been fixed (thanks to Hubert Maier jr. for repairing it).

Users of real Amiga computers will hopefully appreciate the following HD versions which have been added today: F/A 18 Interceptor HD, Lethal Xcess HD, Sword of Sodan HD. Most of these HD versions require an installed version of WHDLoad.

There are also some new scans of Amiga games: Advanced Destroyer Simulation, Cosmo Ranger, Outrun, Peter Beardsley's Internat. Football, Pyramax, Quartz, Raider, Renaissance, Revelation, S.E.U.C.K., Space Gun, Speed Ball, Tie-Break, Titan, Treasure Trap, Triango, Turrican, UN Squadron, Way of the little Dragon, XCopy. Thanks to the contributors Peter and Raffaele.

I have also added some new tunes of games: View the new additions by clicking here. Finally I have also added information to another 280 Amiga games. You can access the information by clicking here. I hope you enjoyed today's small update. AMI Sector One will soon be back with some great news.

After many days of hard work and several hundred dial-in tests, we are able to offer an improved version of VMC-ISDN, which from the current version works with all Mac FreePPP versions without problems.

VMC-ISDN is now the only ISDN card software for AmigaOS allowing the Apple Macintosh emulators Shapeshifter of Fusion to build internet connections directly via ISDN and Sync-PPP. None of the currently available Amiga ISDN card drivers offers such an option, but often have such fatal errors in the protocols that make user-friendly operation impossible.

First tests showed that internet banking, requiring Java, can now be utilized with your Amiga using an ISDN card and a Mac emulator like ShapeShifter or Fusion, installing NetscapeNavigator or the InternetExplorer on your virtual Mac. Yes, the Amiga can do Java... ;)

Amiga, Inc.: Executive Update

September 28, 2000
Executive Update

Greetings to one and all.

I know it has been a long time since I last had the chance to write to all to all of you.

It has been very, very busy, and we have seen some great successes, and some disappointments. I have not been asleep, and to the contrary I have not been getting much sleep of late. There is so much activity, and so little time that I have been spending a great deal of time in other areas and not keeping everyone up to date.

To my Friends in Italy, I apologize that I was not able to attend the show. It was a real disappointment for me personally, as I wanted to greet each and every one of you. The reason was not because we are broke, or out of money as the rumors would state.

Simply, there were two companies in California that I have been working with, and they requested a meeting that occurred over the same period of time. With working with these OEM's we will be able to add several million more Amigans, and the discussions went well and are progressing quickly, these meetings were in addition to what is mentioned in point 3 below.

Now with all the above fun stuff……

Here we go:
  1. The SDK for Amiga DE.

This has been very exciting, and we are really pleased with the number of applications and the number developers using the product to create some great products.

The next version of the Software Development Kit will be out in the next couple of weeks. In addition to the Linux version there is now a version available for Windows. That's correct you are now able to develop for the new Amiga on either Linux, or Windows.

It will feature a new raft of multimedia (Mesa, the SSEYO Koan Audio Engine, streaming) as well better development tools, a richer AVE and enhanced performance.

  2. Amiga OS 3.5 and beyond

We are continuing taking a very hard look at the current Amiga and how we can best move the platform forward. There are discussions on going for some new opportunities and we will be able to share some announcements in the very near future.

  3. Amiga DE business opportunities.

Wow, this is an area that is absolutely exploding. For developers this is going to be great news. Not only will the applications you are working on be used by your Amiga family members, but with the deals that are either executed or in motion there will be millions more consumers joining the Amiga family.

Now many of you began to speculate on the Meternet announcement. Meternet is offering a great product, and they are going to be making it available to the Amiga community, but it is not the AmigaOne.

  4. The AmigaOne.

We have listened to a great many of you with comments, suggestions, business ideas and technical ideas. Dean Brown has been a huge help, especially that he is now here in Snoqualmie with the other members of the team.

Because of this input we have begun negotiations for a brand new design. Most of the details have been worked out, and I hope to have the finished announcement ready by the middle of October. It is my firm belief that you will all be very pleased and excited.

  5. Dealers/Distributors, and our friends in the Press:

The well of information for all of you has been too dry, and inconsistent. To better provide information to each and every one of you.

Amiga has created two new mailing lists. Please go to:

http://www.amigadev.net/index.php?sid=&subpage=home&function=showmaillists or to www.amigadev.com and select mailing lists on the right hand side of the screen. Select either press or dealer, and fill out your information. We will begin weekly feeds to these lists to better support our press and dealers.

I know that many of you will read that this letter says nothing, and that there is nothing happening, other than a new motorcycle for me.

Well you are very wrong. We are meeting directly with the heads of some of the largest computer and consumer electronics companies in the world, and not only do they see the value in what we are offering but they see where the Amiga community, you, is the real value.

Now we still have a ways to go, but we are moving very fast, and I know that you will all be very proud of Amiga as we continue to make things happen.

The biggest challenge for Amiga right now is to stay focused on our core strengths, and not make the mistakes of those who have walked before us.

The Amiga opportunity is huge, and sometimes overwhelming. There are so many conflicting reports, and I have not done a very good job of being able to communicate to all of you as well as I would like to.

We are getting much closer every day, and everyone of you are a major part of the Amiga Family's success.

Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team

"Exodus - The Last War" and Appeal regarding a New Game
At the moment there were four different versions of "Exodus - The Last War" released : a polish, a german, an english, and a french one. Soon the Czech version will be available for download.

APPEAL

There are plans for developing another game; code name "Husaria". In Polish this means a kind of heavy cavalry, soldiers specialized for fast attacks, which were noted for their victories particulary during the 17th century. For example King Jan III Sobieski who has supported Austria against Turkey in the battle near Vienna.

For this new project the programmers are looking for the following things:
  • Maps of Europe from 16th and 17th century.
  • Fotos of castles, palaces and buildings used for economic purposes of the above mentioned centuries.
  • Fotos or pictures of armours and weapons of this time.

If possible, we need pictures of all 4 walls of the buildings, because we need this for making 3d-models out of them. It would be nice if you could tell us the name of the e.g. castle, and maybe send us a little map showing the location.

If you would like to help us, you can send your material via email to darexodus@poczta.onet.pl.

AudioCutter Cinema V 0.91 for PPC-Linux
After versions for x86-linux and Windows a preview version of the AudioCutter Cinema for PowerPC-Linux was released. This version contains bug fixes and some minor changes. The important new feature is a function for 2-dimensional and spectral sample analysis. The preview-version can be downloaded here. For further informations have a look at AudioCutter.de.

AudioCutter needs Java. We recommend for PPC-Linux the Java Virtual Machine by blackdown.org. Unfortunately it is not very fast, but it runs very stable.

AudioCutter Cinema for PPC-Linux on Amiga
The PPC-Linux version were even tested on an Amiga and runs very well on it. The only thing is that you need is a kernel with audio support (Amiga-DMA sound).

Apple: Decreasig Market Value
Financial Time Germany: "Apple: Different problems than the rest of the PC branch"
«From surprised to outraged was the reaction of financial analysts on the reduced profit forecast of the US computer manufacturer Apple. Several influential banks changed their bargain recommendation for Apple shares into warnings on weekend. Admittedly some of the banks mentioned Apple's problems not to be typical for the branch.

Surprisingly Apple reduced their profit forecast for all business units on Thursday. The Apple market lost 52% of value, almost 9 milliards USD of market value were lost.»

Shoutcast/Icecast Client Released for the Amiga
Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz has written a Shoutcast/Icecast Client for the Amiga and called it "StreAmi". There are two very popular audio streaming systems called Icecast and Shoutcast which are able to send MPG audio compressed audio data through the net. StrAmi allows you to fetch these audio files from any server and listen to them in real time.

This way, you can very easily listen to radio via internet. The program has a MUI interface and requires nothing more than a TCP/IP stack like Miami or AmiTCP and of course a fast internet access. You'll find lists of servers at www.shoutcast.com and www.icecast.org.

A.C.T. Stops Amiga Sponsoring
From the end of October 2000 A.C.T. and the co-operating ISP will stop all sponsoring actions for the Amiga area. This will also concern every sites hosted at "amiga-software.com". Single developers or groups who are sponsored up to now have already been contacted via e-mail, but many of the addresses don't seem to work any more or the people are no longer interested in Amiga.

Hence A.C.T. asks all web admins whose sites are sponsored or hosted by A.C.T. to move these sites to another provider by the end of October 2000.

For some of the sites - among them amigasystem.org - the web admins are looking for successors, because otherwise these sites would be canceled outright. Also concerned by the sponsoring stop is the hardware and software sponsoring: from now on A.C.T. will not deliver hardware or software products for free to "up-coming projects" or similar.

ACT: FAQ on Sponsoring Stop

  • The domain names will not be canceled for the time being, but either will be released exempt from charges to the sponsoring receivers or will be sold in early/middle 2001.
  • I beg you to refrain from offering adoption of certain sites to me via e-mail. Contact persons are the web masters. Since the domains will not be canceled, the web space could be hosted "anywhere". I would like to care for DNS changes.
  • Our partners, and ourselves of course will continue to host sites at our usual conditions, if desired by the web masters. It just doesn't match our future business plans to operate this special area for free.

Howard Berman and Rick Boucher, two congressmen of the democrats, have introduced an initiative bill which is supposed to restrict the possibility to patent business methods in the USA. Above all the Business Method Patent Improvement Act addresses the rapidly increasing use of patents for business methods. Crucial point of the act is the declarative statement, that implementation of so called "Real-World"-business processes on computers does not worthy being patented. In addition the representatives want to establish the possibility of raising an objection against patents without being forced to bring such action at law. See titlelink for full article (German).

Eternity

Eternity - New Distributor of the MAS-player
Since October 1st, 2000 Eternity took over the distribution of the MAS-Player in cooperation with Dirk Conrad. The MAS-Player is a hardware MP3-player that can be used with every Amiga parallel interface. The program plays MP3's in 18bit and 44kHz with very low CPU usage and is therefore the best and cheapes solution for playing MP3-files with an Amiga computer.

A techpage will follow. Eternity will ask Thomas Wenzel if he would support the MAS-Player with his AmigaAmp. Eternity will offer a 6 month guarantee.

Examples of Usage:
  • Amiga 4000/A1200 with MAS-Player. Listen to MP3-music without using the PPC or 68k processor. Your processor is available for other tasks
  • Amiga CDTV with MAS-Player could play MP3's directly from CD.
  • Amiga 500/600 with MAS-Player could be a replacement for your hifi-radio. The integrated MP3-player-software uses PAL. There for you can use a TV.
  • Amigas located in professional soundstudios could encode MP3 (using the processor) and play MP3's at the same time (using the MAS-Player)

  • The MPEG-Saver were totaly rewriten (now with own presets)
  • Enrico Meyer compiled the new version of LAME without using libSoundFile thats why it works with SoundFX now.
  • The author Stefan Kost encoded the first whole CD by using the batch-processor.
  • The SoundFX-menu contains now a MRU-list (MostRecentUsed).
  • And a lot more bugfixes (thanks to the SoundFX-mailinglist).

New LAMEbeta Version 3.87
New LAME beta version 3.87! Ok, first off, since version 3.87 LAME no longer works with SecondSpin without changing the code and recompiling, thus LameSpin no longer works, and is no longer included, sorry! :/

On the good note this version is slightly faster, especially the PPC version! ;) (Note, WarpOS still has problems .. this is most likely either ppclibemu or WarpOS's fault since it works fine with PowerUP and MorphOS) From now on the 060 and PPC version use LAME's internal mpglib for decoding, so if you still want to use mpega.library (which is much faster), use the 040 version...

AmiWolfenDoom Website Moved, and one Appeal
The AmiWolfenDoom homepage has moved and is now available at www.antibyte.de (titlelink). Robert Wahnsiedler is still on the hunt for a person that is able to modify the ADoom-engine for making Ninja-, Simpson and Batman-Doom possible. According to the downloadrates of AmiWolfenDoom the interest of the users is very high.

For the modifycations you must have C/Assembler skills and you have to read the docs. There are no major changes to make but the DEH support must be revisde (patch of the internal graphic/sound/textroutines by using a Ascii-file with commands). For example there is no recognition of text. This causes games that use these kind of functions to crash.

appeal
Furthermore Robert Wahnsiedler is looking for someone who is willing to modify the game Imperium Terranum II for the Amiga community. The sourcecode is public available and there is an absolutely resourceful StarTrek addon available. The main problem is that it does not run very good on graphics boards, the only way is to use a tool like NewMode, but this is a not very stable solution. If you are interested, please contact Robert Wahnsiedler.

Thanks to the many friendly beta-testers we now are able to offer an official version for the new VMC-ISDN software for all of the interested, and each owner of an Amiga ISDN board.

Though this version still doesn't has all the features VMC is currently working on, but it fits to make users realize there is no faster driver for ISDN boards for the Amiga. This version also contains complete example configuration files for every German Call-by-Call internet providers, and Miami or MiamiDeluxe.

Since like all the time users have been asking for prices, functions or limitations of the drivers an extensive AmigaGuide document was included, which hopefully answers all these questions.

fxSCAN SE No Longer Part of ScanQuix 5
RBM decided some time ago not to purchase serial numbers for fxSCAN SE versions from us, any longer. As a result of this the at this time delivered and long before produced ScanQuix CDs admittedly come with fxSCAN SE, but without a serial number cause RBM no longer owns a license for these. Due to this we beg you to refrain from asking us for free serial numbers, cause these were not payed by RBM and will not be deliverd by us afterwards. Because of that fxSCAN from now only can be purchased as a full version. Please, refrain from using serial numbers from other people, cause this would be unlawful.

Metabox Share Free Falling
Metabox, once stock jobber' favourite in the new market, were not able to fulfill their volume announced early this year. One was talking about orders amounting to millions, that time - in fact just declarations of intent by anonymous, but bulk purchasers from foreign countries. After that the Metabox share shot up, and was the favourite of every risk loving investor, all summer.
Since several days share is in the red continuous, and today for some time went below -50% after the company from Hildesheim, Germany, released a profit caution. The initial volume forecast of 198 Mio. DM was audited to 70 Mio. DM. At this time the share is at a price of 7,- EUR. Top price was converted into euros (due to share split) 45,80EUR in July. Metabox beside internet boxes for TV-sets also produces G3 boards for the Mac, and had announced an Amiga version of these boards, the "AmiJoe". If AmiJoe ever will be released is doubtful, now.

KDH-Datentechnick

Business Plays Trickily ;-)
Selling of both, Amiga soft and hardware is stagnating - that's nothing new. But new is an idea of KDH-Datentechnik to bridge this depression in trade with party-gags. What is being offered? This things ist called "Orgasmatron", looks like a big beater, and should knead the scalp catering for unstressing, and a sense of well-being.

"Hushes while waiting for PPC boards, new Amiga games, PCI boards, AmigaOne, etc.", concludes KDH - what at least is evident for the proper portion of humor they own.

Gary Peake: Statement on the AmigaSDK for Windows
We have, as our first concern, developers. Developers need to be able to make money or they stop developing for a platform as we have all seen. Windows currently holds 85% of the desktop market.

Having said that, envision a run-time environment that is so small you can sell a CD of YOUR applications, games, etc along with this run-time environment and know that it will load and run on Windows, Linux, etc.

How valuable is this to a developer?

Once the AmigaDE takes hold and as market share increases, then we have even more opportunity for our developers (who are all hungry or should be after a 9 year drought).

On the up side, there is this list, where new Linux SDK users may get the assistance they need to remain un-shafted, and Amiga Inc. continues to work and partner with more factions of the Linux and Open Source communities.

And our commitment to open source won't waiver. It takes BOTH kinds of development to enhance a platform.

Heise: Motorola shrinked the G4
«Motorola introduced an new version of the G4 PowerPC with smaller structure and lower needs of power. The new one is called MPC 7410, is equiped with AltiVec as well as the the MPC 7400, alias G4, and should also be fully multi-processor capable (SMP). With the new system bus, MPX, transfer rate is up to 6.4 GBit/sec. The L2 cache can alternatively be used as high speed memory (Private Memory Mode).»

WarpGIF: Rectification
If many voices are emphasing the same suggestion, so you start to believe this suggestion, even if it isn't true. If fell for this well known phsycologic phenomenon myself.

Contrary to the opinion of many users the gif-subclass of the picture.datatype is not capable of viewing animated GIFs within browsers. Many users claimed the original OS3.5 gif.datatype to able to do that. Unfortunately I cannot validate this.
Therefore also with the WarpGIF.datatype only the first image of an animated GIF is viewed! The animation only can be viewed by the respective PlugIn of the browser.
