Compass Hardware for Amiga (Principle Circuit)
Carsten Siegner has built a principle circuit for a compass. This circuit is unusually sensitive and already detect the north pole
of the Earth's magnetic field.
For the operation here comes a very sensitive KMZ-51 magnetic field sensor. This includes a sensitivity of - 0.2
kA/m to + 0.2kA/m. Built into the chip are magnetic recessive resistances in the form of a Wheatstone bridge. The sensitivity
(uncompensated), relative to measurement setting, carries (16mV/V) /
(kA/m).
Attention: the sensor is circuit broken in an SMD housing and on that account may only be soldered with great
difficulty. The sensor can pick up the electrical field of the computer. So one must compensate for this. One may not
divert a magnetic field greater than 1 kA/m with the sensor, or else the Wheatstone bridge will always keep the exit value.
In order for this not to happen one must use the chip's internal reset coils. The chip ZN424 is unfortunately very difficult to
flush. Unfortunately it is so far the only operation enhancer that can energize the tension variables of the Earth-field
detector. Siegner tested other OPs, but none came close to the strengthening of the ZN424.
Unfortunately the software programming is not as simple a thing as the hardware. The measurement
value fluctuates constantly due to the diverting magnetic fields of the TV or the computer. On account of that one can't
directly recognize the Earth's magnetic field. Of course when one adjusts the circuit slowly then one recognizes that the
measurement value declines further, the more the sensor is turned from the north-south position. Because the sensor
is now polarized, this means that one can differentiate a magnetic field between north and south, and may now recognize
the Earth's magnetic field from the correction measurement value. Only the calculations of the whole thing are going to be
beautifully difficult. Every metallic resistance will cause disturbance to the setting of the measurement values. (nba) (Translation: dm)

CeBIT 2003 - Visit to Genesi (Update II)
Martin Heine describes his impressions of Genesi's convention stand at this year's CeBIT 2003 in Hannover. You'll find a few pictures
at the end of his report.
The first appearance of Genesi at the CeBIT in Hannover takes place at the stand of Plexus - on the other hand Plexus will
be Genesi's guest at this year's CeBIT Australia.
Pegasos computers with MorphOS installed are being shown, another board separately for demonstrational purposes, as
well as case prototypes for example for the Pegasos homeserver Psylent or high end "set top boxes" (as opposed to smaller, simpler
DTV STBs).
One of the Pegasos computers is to be found in a prototype case, which was also just displayed in Aachen: here
sits a micro ATX board directly behind an LCD display, and in the base you'll find for example the CD drive and the frontal
USB connections.
As a small new MorphOS development (in relation to the latest update on the FTP server) a transparent menu
option is there, as well as a graphical selector for setting Preferences.
In the way of programming, Internet and multimedia software were shown, as well as a range of emulators, for
example Bochs, through which Windows95 was run in an Ambient window on the G3/600 Pegasos.
There were no new press releases, at least not on the first day of the convention, but it was confirmed that the long
awaited Articia Northbridges from Mai arrived by Genesi in the meantime, so the last run of Pegasos boards may now go into
production.
Addtionally Arend-Paul Spijkerman, the developer of Mediapoint, was hired by Genesi. With this product, combined
with Pegasos and MorphOS, Genesi is able to open another market segment, and Ron van Herk hopes to be able to demonstrate
this at CeBIT Australia.
No official news was offered about the Pegasos II, however one may be confident that the development might be
concluded earlier than expected.
Finally, a TV crew paid Genesi a visit: Ralph Benz von "Neues..." (ZDF/3sat) was reported in
detail on Wednesday about current events related to Pegasos and MorphOS and he'll be back again with the camera crew to
film on the second day of the convention. (nba)

coefficent is adjustable by user.
- New tag TT_Gamma in TT_SetAttrs() call for gamma coefficent
adjust.
- FPU version is discontinued. New alphablending code does not
use FPU at all and is faster even than FPU 6.2 version. Using
FPU gives no further speedup.

Opening of the CeBIT 2003
Today, Wednesday the 12th of March 2003, the CeBIT opened its doors. The world's largest IT fair in Hannover will last until March the 19th 2003.
While there is a loss of exhibitors and exhibition space experts guess there will be, facing the stressed situation of the German economy, a decrease of visitors also.
But at least the IT trade keeps slightly optimistic. This year UMTS, the tablet PC and once more the competition between Windows and Linux will be in the focus.
Among the others there is Genesi, developer and distributor of the Pegasos, attending the show. AMIGA Inc. have canceled their attendence just some days before the start of the fair.
Reports of the CeBIT 2003 will be to read at
amiga-news.de and AMIGAplus soon.

If there might be someone who would do this job the one will receive an extensive
Airsoft Softwair bundle incl. Hollywood full version. I will emphasize here that the translation really will be a big job. It is about a good 250 kilobytes of plain text which has to be translated. Eyetech: AmigaOne-XE status update
Alan Redhouse (Eyetech) comments on the recent delays with the delivery of the AmigaOne-XE motherboards at the AmigaOne mailing list (title link). A brief summary of the most important topics:
The delivery of the motherboard is delayed because some testers reported smaller problems with the new hardware and UBoot. The new UBoot revision is finished now (see Hyperion
press release from Monday) and the production of the boards can be started now.
Eyetech guesses that they will receive the motherboards next week and they aim to start the delivery the week later.
Suse ran out of PPC Linux sets so the last XEs will be delivered with Debian.
Because there seem to be a great demand of a high end CPU module Eyetech will offer later this year a module with a faster G4 processor.
Actually the 7445 with 1.3 GHz is favoured but this might be changed due to the availability of different CPU types.
Finally Redhouse comments on the relationship between MAI, Eyetech and Terra Soft extensively.

Betreff: Re: [amigaone] Re: latest AmigaOne delay
When I wrote to this list on 13 February I said I expected - if everything
went to plan - that if the A1-XE boards shipped to developers in early
February worked well we would order and receive the end user earlybird
systems by the end of February. But I did add :-
"These are of course target dates, and cannot possibly be taken as a promise
or guarantee. All I can say is that we are as keen to have your money as you
are to spend it, and do not, and never have had any intention of
deliberately holding back shipments just to be awkward (as some people seem
to think). However we will not as of policy ship any product before we are
satisfied that it is fully functional - including an installable and
working operating system - other than to developers for testing purposes."
Well in the event the developers did find a few problems with the newly
available hardware/firmware combination, and as a result UBoot had some
further updates - as posted this week by Hyperion - including board
diagnostics and better RAM support. In addition SuSE ran out of boxed PPC
Linux sets, so we have decided to ship Debian Linux with the Earlybird
systems instead. The developers, and particulrly Ross Vumbaca, have done
sterling work in putting together an end-user installation guide. Thanks
again guys.
The upshot is that the earlybird and remaining A1-XE/G4 and G3 boads are now
ready for final BIOS programming and shipping to us. We expect to receive
them next week and start shipping them out the following week.
Many people have also asked us to produce a high end cpu module for the
A1-XE and I am pleased to announce that we will be commissioning a high-end
G4 module for delivery later in the year. The current favourite is the
7445@1.3GHz - but we will of course monitor the available cpu options to
make sure that we can offer the best price/performance to upgraders. These
top-end cpu's are currently *very* expensive so will only appeal to users
who must have the fastest for business (or ego) reasons.
Finally we have received several emails about Terrasofts 'will we/won't we'
attitude to the Teron boards and our opinion as to what, if any, is the
conspiracy theory behind their (non) announcements.
First of all it is necessary to put right some of the popular misconceptions
that have been relentlessly been put about by certain individuals on ann and
elsewhere.
MAI - as has been said many times - are a fabless chip manufacturer who also
own the Teron design. They do not make boards. In the past MAI have
commissioned the building of boards in sample quantity boards from a third
party prototyping company (a sort of far eastern DCE on their good days) and
we have bought some of these boards from MAI to ship to developers. But for
any sort of producton volumes we have to contract directly with an
independant board manufacturer and clearly this involves a significant
volume and therefore upfront financial commitment.
This means that neither Terrasoft nor us are 'just a distributor' of MAI
boards. To have anything other than sample boards produced to the basic
Teron design, those boards have to be individually ordered, in very
significant quantities, by us, Terrasoft or whoever. If Terrasoft want
boards from our production they have to apply to us to be a dealer. If not
they have to stump up a rather large amount of money of their own to build
their own production. MAI of course get a royalty for their board design for
all boards manufactured. For the record we have placed by far the largest
order for boards based on the Teron design of anybody, including MAI (and of
course Terrasoft).
This PPC motherboard market is of course a new market for Terrasoft who,
despite the best wishes of those who would do anything to see genuine Amiga
supporting companies such as us and Hyperion fail, are really a very small
company that have historcally made their money selling Linux books and
merchandise, and providing paid some YDL support to companies. My guess is
that it is their uncertainties in this new (to them) board market coupled
with
the required volume/financial commitment which is now causing them to
reconsider their options. In fact Terrasoft have not even contributed to
porting YDL to the Teron board - this has been done by Bill Mueller of MAI
and others on the A1 dev list..They clearly also completely messed up their
TeronPx/G4 pricing calculations - hence the quick withrawal from their web
site.
Contrary to what has also been speculated, there is certainly no requirement
for us or end users to pay a licence fee to Terrasoft for any AmigaOne board
whether used for running OS4 or Linux.
I'm sure the ann orcs will try to make something sinister of all this, but
we, and Hyperion, really are doing our best under very difficult
circumstances to deliver the best, most cost effective, genuine, Amiga to
date.
Thankyou for your continued support
Alan

AmigaWorld: Ten questions per week at Fleecy Moss
"We at AmigaWorld are proud to announce that Amiga's Chief Technology
Officer Fleecy Moss has agreed on offering us weekly Questions and
Answers sessions." (Update, 17.03.2012, cg: integrated the actual interview into the news item, since the original document is no longer available on the net):
1) Rebel: "Why SO silent? AInc has been quiet for months at a time, giving the naysayers, and rumour mongers a chance to do more damage, and divide the community even more.".
Fleecy: As my mother used to, and still does say to me 'Don't say anything unless you have something to say.' Keith Blakemore Noble pointed out on ANN that this is what we said we would do when we bought the company in 2000 and then we went back on this pledge. The problem we have, although it is a good problem is that the Amiga has a community and the community wants to know what is going on, more so given the nightmare of the last eight years.
Our initial policy was thus to say nothing until we had news to share. With all the requests we then got for news, it became very difficult for us to keep to our policy. We thus resurrected the Executive Updates but in these we made the mistake of sharing status and progress information and as anyone in business knows, business is a distillation process - 100 leads may lead to 20 contacts which lead to 5 contracts which may, if you are lucky lead to 1 deal.
Even more unfortunate, the deals we were able to announce, the Sharp Zaurus, the Nokia MediaTerminal, the Sendo Z100 were pulled out from under us - the Zaurus for Sharp internal reasons, the MediaTerminal because of the collapse of ITV digital and another Germany company and the Sendo situation is well understood (although there is still hope there of a new deal based upon the unique advantages of the AmigaDE).
So, in terms of news items we haven't done too well.
To add to this (and many will shout and scream about this but it is true), Amiga Inc has been under attack from several groups who have other axes to grind, whether they want an x86 solution, AmigaOS open sourced, protection code and licencing removed from AmigaOS4.0 or want to encourage people to move to another platform whilst claiming it is an Amiga. Of course in a community there is disagreement but in a community that disagreement is either tolerated or the community splits apart. Everything we were saying in public was being taken apart and turned to support whatever was the position of the poster.
In the end, we decided to revert back to our original policy since it became apparent that all anyone really cared about was the release of AmigaOS4.0. This then brought us full circle to the original situation, that when saying nothing, noisemakers will rush to fill the silence. If you don't counteract the rumours then its because they are true and if you do pop up to counteract them then that must be because they are true. The only way to win is to get AmigaOS4.0 out the door and so that is what we are concentrating on at the moment.
Part of the reason for this Q&A; service is to rubbish the claim that we won't talk to the community. We just won't say anything if it isn't 110% guaranteed anymore and that is the way people seem to want it.
2) SlimJim: "It is well known that this first release of AOS4 is mainly aimed for the existing user-base and eventual old Amigans. What is Amiga Inc's (overall) marketing strategy with respect to AmigaOS4 + Aone (once they become available)?".
Fleecy:
- Move the community to new hardware and operating system.
- Develop audio and 2d/3d productivity architectures with Amiga and non Amiga developers
- Create applications to take advantage of these architectures to carve out solution markets
- Support development of applications that round the appeal of the platform - browser, email client, word processor
- Integrate with the AmigaDE to open access to multiple platform markets, both open and solution based
- As we build the application base to where it can successfully provide for different roles, we will then push it out into those markets.
In short, there is no point in pushing the Amiga into a market where it is not yet ready to provide an adequate solution or it will die before it takes its first step. To do that we need the hardware, the operating system, the application base and the support services in place.
3) Herewegoagain: "Will they [Amiga Inc.] be negotiating with Microsoft to bring Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Media Player to OS4?".
Fleecy: It is something we have considered but again, as with all the other application developers out there on other platforms, until we can plonk a machine and operating system in front of them, there is little point. The perennial problem, of course is that these companies are busy with their main activities and seeing their product ported to another platform, particularly one as small as the Amiga is not something that they wish to consider. In the end, they will only 'get out of bed' if there is a large market or we provide them with financial incentive.
4) alx: "Assuming everything goes to plan, at what point in the future will Amiga start to advertise the A1/OS (not just to Amigans)?".
Fleecy: I refer you back to question 2 - we will market and advertise when the full solution is ready for those markets. This doesn't mean that there won't be penetration. We have many journalists ready to review and write about the machines. Amiga is a big story to them because the Amiga was such a large part of people's lives in the past. We will have services in place to take advantage of and capture that interest, to make use of it when the conditions are right.
5) reflect: "Maybe I've missed this when I read the featurelist, but I couldn't see ARexx there. Will ARexx still be included, and if so, will it have gotten an overhaul internally or will it 'just' be ported or will it be emulated?"
Fleecy: The ownership issues surround the original ARexx implementation are well known and we have been unable to gain access to the source. The existing 68k ARexx binary will thus be emulated. We are reviewing the entire scripting and application control for both AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 as mentioned later on.
6) unclecurio: "What are AInc doing to attract past developers to produce updated versions of their software? For example, Photogenics has ceased development for AmigaOS but would be a great product to bring back in an updated version.".
Fleecy: We are working in the background but I don't want to go into too much detail as it has become apparent that competitors are approaching the same people and trying to tie them into exclusive deals that would keep their products from AmigaOS4.0. Providing them with a list of who we are approaching, both within the Amiga community and on other platforms would really be doing their work for them. Suffice it to say that we are being as open as we can with all the developers that we have been able to locate still developing for the AmigaOS and with one or two exceptions, they are very receptive to what we have been able to tell them.
7) Eric_Z: "Is A.inc. currently involved in porting over office apps to AACE or OS4?".
Fleecy: For Amiga Anywhere, we are encouraging development of the applications that our customers are telling us they want, and this is almost always games. However, we do have customers who have requested education and productivity software and we have one of the best calculators ever created on a software platform and a digital picture application that is impressing lots of people. In the end, we encourage and work on whatever is being asked for.
8) mood: "Will there be any Amiga-Anywhere/AmigaDE-player for AmigaOS 4.x?".
Fleecy: We have already stated that we are targeting an AACE player for AmigaOS4.2
9) DaveW: "Is SHEEP the scripting language that looked rather cool available or going to be available this year for Amiga based programmers to get their hands on?".
Fleecy: We are currently reviewing SHEEP in the context of the AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 and looking at how it can be used to bring the two together as both are moved forwards and towards each other.
10) Pig: "Where do you see the company in 5 years, and where do you see AmigaOS at that time?".
Fleecy: I hope that we are on many different types of device and providing a seamless digital enviroment for users irrespective of their hardware. We have a marketing slogan we use, the new WWW, which means Whatever, Wherever, Whenever.

H&P: StormC programmer needed
For the porting of the loganalyzers Sawmill we are looking for an
Amiga programmer, who is used to StormC and/or GCC. It
concerns thereby not the adjustment of sources, but rather the
adjustment of libraries, so that the source can be compiled on the Amiga. The payment is to be made in form of a participation in
turnover at the sales of the Amiga version. If you are interested please contact Markus
Nerding. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Terra Soft: Teron-PPC-Board not longer available in the Online-Store
Terra Soft ATX PowerPC Systems
Terra Soft Current and Pending Customers,
"Many of you have enthusiastically and patiently awaited the delivery of MAI Logic's Teron motherboards on which Terra Soft's Boxer ATX systems will be built. We have removed the Teron-based systems from our online Store until further notice in order to reduce further confusion and false expectations. We promise to bring this product to market as soon as possible." -- Terra Soft Team
Background could be a diversity of opinion between Terra Soft and Mai
Logic. According to rumors, which Mike Bouma in the Amiga World forum
drew "from reliable sources", Terra Soft demands 20 US dollar per
produced and sold Main board, including the AmigaOne boards, since
these boards can implement Yellow Dog Linux. These rumors were so far
not confirmed officially.

Voltmeter software completed
I herewith announce that the software for my voltmeter hardware has been
completed. This should be able to run on all A1200s and A4000s. However, it
would have to be adapted for A500 and A600. This is because the software uses
the 32bit width of the address data.
Theoretically the software should run under AmigaOS V2.1 - 3.9, however it has
not been tested under version 2.1. The program archive now also contains the
circuit diagram for self-assembly. This has been integrated in a PDF file which
furthermore contains descriptions of the ARexx programs. Only experienced hobby
electronic technicians should deal with this (chips are susceptible against
static electricity!). You can get all parts at Conrad Electronic or any
well-assorted electronics shop.
Software: The archive now contains several ARexx programs with which you can
read out the data from the voltmeter. Among those are also an oscilloscope
program and a program using the system's Pipe:. Unfortunately I can't write a
program reading out the data from the pipe as fast as they are written into it.
Furthermore there are a bus initialization and a zero correction program.
The most important program is the main program, "Voltmeter". There you can
mainly do voltage metering in realtime. The second important function is the
sampling of voltage data. This means that in 1 second about 280 measurings are
performed. These are displayed immediately afterwards in a lister. Thereby they
are converted into volts with a precision of 3 decimal places.
This list of voltage data can be saved, if you want, to be used in another
program. The same can be done with the metered value of the single measurement.
An important highlight are the four diagram functions in the voltmeter program.
After the listing of the metered values in the lister you can view them again
in one of the four diagram modes in individual windows. These are: dot diagram,
line diagram, P-grid diagram, and L-grid diagram. The L-grid diagram is the
most exact diagram of all as you can read out the voltage down to 0.1 volts and
the time down to a few milliseconds.
It has to be said that point diagram and P-grid diagram show time in samples
whereas the two line grid diagrams show it in seconds. Incidentally there can
be only 1000 samples taken as a maximum. This means about 3.5 - 4 seconds of
measuring.

Internet browser: Mozilla for AmigaOS?
In a thread on Amiga.org
explains Dave "DaveP" Pitcher that he had already run a Mozilla port under AmigaOS 3.9 - more than one year ago.
Dave had looked for people who were willing to take over the following work. As nobody registered he had ceased the work. The state of the port is described by Dave like this: "It is slow, contains errors (it's based on an early Mozilla code base) and it needs a lot of finetuning before it will be something I could be proud of".
Dave says that he'll restart the work on the port as soon as his other projects (his part of work on OS4 and his website amigabooks.org) leave him enough time and if he gets enough feedback).

New community portal: Amigaworld.net
Though the community portal Amigaworld.net already exits for several months it became a talking-point in the last days as an alternative to Amiga.org.
In contrary to Amiga.org MorphOS and Pegasos aren't accepted as topic on Amigaworld.net, the providers want to concentrate on topics all about AmigaOS and Amiga Inc. In conjunction with very strict moderating they want to avoid the typical warfares also Amiga.org had to suffer from.

Further AmigaOne/Pegasos benchmarks
On Pekka Nissinen's benchmark site are further benchmarks available: new added are the results of a Pegasos/G3 with 100 MHz FSB as well as of an AmigaOne-SE with 100 MHz FSB.
All benchmarks had been done with the same binary.
To people who speak English and are interested in the topic may be the according thread on ANN recommended. The issue is discussed there on a mainly objective basis. Right now there's the question why the Pegasos does much worse in two tests (assignment and LU decomposition) than the AmigaOne, maybe the L2-cache isn't activated on the Pegasos. (nba)
Update:
Update for Pegasos/AmigaOne benchmarks - In the meanwhile has the site been brought up-to-date. On the Pegasos was indeed the L2-cache deactivated, this error has been fixed and the benchmark results have been updated.

Genesi: Further details on STB-strategy
In two comments of Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco (Genesi)
on Amiga.org
you can find further details on their Set-Top-Box-Strategy. It follows an extract from these comments:
[After reflecting about the success of BSkyB in Great Britain:] "Now, do something
inexpensive with a 403 PPC and a DTV tuner with MorphOS (in this case)
and you could have something quite special that can handle anything as
well as everything retailing for 400-500 Euros at less that 25% of the cost.
Sounds like something another BSkyB-like company might take a risk with?
Yes, you bet!"
"Everything we learned before collectively (VisCorp, PhaseV, bplan, Thendic,
etc.) is coming to play today in Genesi for a very large company that wants
to do *exactly* that."
"Speaking of which there is a good article about Murdoch
here.
[...] BTW, This article should also be read by others who may be
underestimating this DTV STB market at the price point we are delivering
hardware to it (contrast that for example with the super STB from Pace at
350 £!)."
"Our customer [...] has a pricing strategy that tells us they understand
the market and their customers."
"As far as we can tell, the BSkyB boxes in the UK are completely non-standard.
They use WAP which may sound off the wall given it's designed for mobile phones
but being designed for low end systems with low bandwidth makes it perfect
for STBs. There's a lot of technology available now that supports WAP
development. We actually will have a WAP stack/Browser ready."
"Remember, we will not integrate the uplink initially to reduce cost (we
will have a WAP portal for people to use mobile phones as an unlink though
and a handy little connector to support that process). We have a phased modular
strategy that adds functionality akin to the base station of a radio/remote
phone designed normally for home use. The receiver chip for the radio signal
will have been already introduced in the STB (as is found in the home handset
associated with the base station that anchors the system in the home with
power and telephone line connection -- incidentally overcoming the no
telephone connection near the TV problem)."
"On the smart card side, we will use them to unscramble parts of the signal
already there. This can be done on a subscriber or pre-paid basis (for
anonymity or one game at a time). The signal itself can *also* be data
driven to individually addressable STBs. Here smart cards can be further
used as recording devices. In our case viewing data can be exchanged for
movie credits... Of course, this flexibility can be promotion/advertising
oriented too..." (ps) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Inc.: Amiga Absence at CeBIT 2003 in Hannover
Amiga Absence at CeBIT
Mar 6, 2003 - Late last year, Amiga announced its intention to launch
AmigaOS4.0 at the CeBIT show
in Germany. Since then, the project has
advanced into its final stages but unfortunately not to the point where
we are ready to ship. We have thus decided not to attend the Cebit
Germany show. Instead we are looking at other shows and opportunities
in the near future to provide a suitable platform for the launch of
the new Amiga.
We apologize to the commmunity for waiting until the last possible
moment to make this announcement but despite heroic efforts by all
concerned, even up to the last minute, circumstances have conspired
to push completion beyond the deadline. We have regretfully decided
that making CeBIT Germany the AmigaOS 4 launch platform is not a
realistic option at present.
AmigaOS4.0 is coming. Beta-testing has been going on since last
September, the Club Amiga Magazine is previewing many of the new
features and AmigaOne integration is proceeding well. Amiga,
Hyperion
and Eyetech
are 100% committed to getting the new platform out into
the world and reintroducing the world to the pleasures of home
computing.

Warning: Nethands.de Warned About Missing Banner
As already
reported many times,
many homepage makers (it doesn't matter if they are private or commercial) are not aware that the new telecommunications service law (TDG) and/or the intermediate services state regulations (MDStV) include a provision requiring a banner. There are constantly resourceful (or better put, flighty) lawyers who want to earn their bread with warnings.
Flighty therefore, because it could be possible throughout to draw attention to a possible violation through email, and to offer to help out. If this remains unsuccessful first of all, our opinion about a warning is justified. The law is conclusively implemented to protect the surfer, and not to to enrich lawyers through warnings as well.
Read under the title link about how Nethands.de handles the warning, and help them if you have the opportunity. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Multimedia authoring system: New plugin for Hollywood
Malibu is a plugin for Hollywood which contains an import filter
for Scala presentations. As soon as Malibu is installed, Hollywood
will suddenly be able to show Scala presentations or compile them.
Many screenshots are now available from the Airsoft Softwair
homepage. The Malibu plugin will of course also be released for
MorphOS and - as soon as available - AmigaOS4.
With Malibu it is now possible for the first time to display Scala presentations on Workbench screen or on your own public screen. Because the whole emulation runs on top of Hollywood's multimedia application layer everything will be first converted to 24-bit and then displayed. In many cases the quality of the pictures that Malibu displays is much better than the original Scala quality because Scala often had to remap many pictures with very different colors to a 8-bit display which resulted in a massive loss of color information.
Malibu emulates nearly the whole Scala command set and supports all Scala versions up to Scala InfoChannel 500 which was the last Amiga version of Scala. Emulation is done by the elCapitan microkernel which tries to achieve the best performance possible on the used system. For example, the next page is already calculated while the current page is on the display. Complex transition effects can also be pre-calculated and then displayed smoothly.
Scala is a program which helped the Amiga to become a real Multimedia wonder. There were no products for a long long time that could beat an Amiga with Scala. Therefore Scala was widely used in all different production fields, from movies and television to big shows. Everyone who has worked with Scala knows what power it has. But this power is only possible because Scala is very hard coded to the Amiga's custom chips which leads to the problem that it does not run on graphics boards and also has some other major problems with today's Amiga systems. For many years all sorts of users complained that there is no Scala that runs RTG compatible. This time is over now. Scala revives with the Malibu plugin: On the Workbench? Of course. In 24-bit? You can bet your life on that. Always RTG conform? Absolutely.
Don't miss Malibu out! Watching Scala presentations on Workbench is a complete new feeling which every Amiga user should experience.
Order Hollywood now to make your system ready for Scala!
Features:
Graphics:
- Impressive Scala transitions (e.g. Superimpose, Roll on, Flow, Push, Diagonal)
- Support for Scala text styles outline, shadow & 3D
- Scala forms: Ellipses, rectangles, lines & polygons
- Emulation of backgrounds with raster type
- Complete brush support (incl. crop & resize)
- Animations are supported
- Transition effects for all Scala objects
- Support for styles like bevel & background
- Runs completely in 24-bit mode
- Color fonts are supported
- Smooth scrolling for Scala fly-ons
- Emulation of all graphics attributes
- Brush transparency is fully supported
- Objects can be removed from screen with transition effects
- All palette settings are respected and correctly converted
Sound:
- Support for sound modules and samples
- Audio output through AHI incl. full mixing
- Sound fades are supported
- Sound implementation is retargetable for use on Pegasos, Amithlon...
Environment:
- All Scala versions up to InfoChannel 500 are supported
- Margin settings and tabulators are respected
- Scala variables can be used
- Buttons and events are emulated
- Almost complete emulation of Scala command set
- Scala presentations can be compiled
- Emulation can be configured in detail
- Complete independent from environment; does not matter if Cgfx, P96, AGA, ECS or OCS is active
- Absolutely system friendly
Requirements:
- Kickstart 3.0 or better
- 68020 processor
- Graphics board recommended
- 16 megabyte memory recommended

Update: Digital voltmeter for Amiga
Carsten Siegner currently developes a new voltmeter hardware for
the parallel port, which went through several improvements:
To the voltmeter hardware a 100 times highspeed amplifier has been added. Thus it is possible to measure voltages down to field of micro voltages. The amplifier is to chose by a toggle switch (normal resolution / high resolution area). The
voltmeter circuit includes an own power supply controller now to be not influenced by noise signals from the powernet which might distort the measurement.
Thus it becomes posile to use nearly every power supply (not stabilized ones also) which offers 6 to 12 Volt and a maximum of 1 Ampere.
There are several ARexx scripts available to control the voltmeter.
Further more Siegner works on a more complete version with a GUI currently. This will include the following features:
Single measurement (save function included), high speed measurement with an adjustable number of samples (save function included),
view as list for all measurements (high speed measurement), view as diagram (high speed measurement); therefore some similiarities with an oscilloscope.
Additional to the voltmeter program there will be, once it will be finished, the wiring diagram available to built the voltmeter yourself. To do so you should be some kind of an advanced electrician because e.g. the measurement chip is highly delicate regarding electro static charge. All parts might be purchased at Conrad Electronic.

Genesi: Announcement concerning the Genesi/Phoenix collaboration
In a joint statement, Raquel Velasco, Bill Buck, and David Greene (GreenBoy)
clarify some outstanding issues about the future of Genesi, the role of Phoenix,
and the DTV set-top-box.
- One to support the task oriented objectives focused on the delivery of the
DTV STB by the end of 2003.
During the month of March Genesi will transition existing consulting/ employment
agreements to the new structure. A list of well known developers in the
"Community" will be joining Genesi. These individuals will be almost exclusively
focused on the DTV STB project.
- The future of the Pegasos and MorphOS, including the release of the Pegasos
II using the Marvell northbridge.
The difficulties with the Articia have delayed the Pegasos long enough. The
Pegasos II development has begun and WILL be completed sooner than expected.
Genesi will operate from offices in
Luxembourg, France, and Germany with a branch office in Switzerland. "Virtual"
offices will also operate in the USA and the UK. An extensive Internet sales and
support infrastructure is being implemented.
Genesi and Phoenix are seeking collaborators in nearly every area. Here is a
full list of Phoenix mailing lists that are now devoted to Genesi development:
These are moderated by greenboy and open to all interested parties who meet Phoenix's expanded
definition of DEVELOPER: coders, web designers and publishers, financiers, beta testers,
translators, arts and media specialists, etc.
Then:
Lists we are considering:
- PhGames@phinixi.com - games for Pegasos on the desktop
- PhREBOL@phinixi.com - should Rebol be part of the platform?
- PhDigAudio@phinixi.com - to ramp up what Nicholas Blachford's MORloud started. Note: Genesi has licensed ProStation Audio for MorphOS from Maurizio Ciccione of AudioLabs. ProStation Audio will be bundled with the OS.
- PhVideo@phinixi.com - from here the videomicrowave will take off. It begins with MediaPoint, and scales into a special IOSPIRIT offering - along with many other goodies being planned and soon to come.
All requests to join Phoenix/Genesi mailing lists are welcome! - just send email with a brief bio/CV to
greenboy@phinixi.com.

New Audio-Track from Bjorn Lynne
Bjorn Lynne has released his Audio-Track "Back in the Big Time" on mp3.com as free
MP3.
Lynne wrote:
I hope you'll like the track. I did everything myself on it, including the sexy "uh..."
voice :-), the "bap-bap-bap-baaah" singing, the funky wah-wah guitar, etc.
The keyboard solos were deliberately included exactly as they were played on the
first take, without any corrections or re-takes. I wanted to capture them exactly as
they just fell out the first time, with imperfections and everything. :-)
The bass guitar sound is taken from my own instrumental sample-CDROM "Top Production
Samples" ( www.lynnemusic.com/tps1.html ) which contains a lot of instruments and
loops for use in your own music.
I have also entered this track into a contest/review thing at the other
music site, MakeAStar.com. But it hasn't entered the "voting stage" yet. I will write
again if/when this track goes into voting at MakeAStar, and hope for your vote then.
:-)
This is the 6th or 7th track I have created in a kind of "jazzy" mood. I had quite a
good response earlier to the tracks "Lounge Living" and "Understatement". Maybe I'll
make a CD with all my jazzy tracks, just to do something different. :-)
My CD "Wolves of the Gods" is on a 14-days-only special offer during which the CD can be
purchased for $12.99 instead of the normal $18.99, and there is now only 2 days left
of this offer. Furthermore, you can download one track ("Kyrania") from the CD, for
free in full CD quality, also for only 2 more days. So if you want to get in on this
offer, please see http://www.lynnemusic.com/wolves.html today or tomorrow.

Amigafun-Webchat:
Since Webchat for the well-known Amiga Channel in the IRC is currently not available, Amiforce offers now a HTML Chat. This Webchat
should be however only a temporary solution, which can be maintained
if necessary also additionally. The chat was integrated in the
Amiforce forum and is attainable over a button named "#IRC". The chat
is meant exclusively for Amiforce and may not be taken over on
other Web pages. In this way users, which have no IRC client, can now
visit the channel again. Everyone who would like to use the chat, should refer to the individual instructions, since
no graphic elements are used.
Classic-Games Area:
Freeware games will be made available here. They are based on Amos offering high quality and much fun. More games will be added in the future.

A new area will be added with games that can be played directly on our page. A lot of games will be integrated. Since Ibrowse2.3 there are many games that now are realy useable.

Logo gallery in Amiga Demoscene Archive
Do you remember all those lovely
logos that used to be in Amiga productions? A lot of them
were beautiful, showing great skill and talent from pixellers,
pushing so much in so little colors and space. Well, today,
we started something new on A.D.A., a logo gallery of the
best logos ever painted. Just click on "logos" in the menu
and be amazed at the first 18 logos appearing on A.D.A. This
little gallery will be updated a lot in future, together with
a lot of cool demos that we still have to add. If you have any
comments on the new gallery, please mail them or write it in
the guestbook. (nba)

Virtual Dimension (ANF)
|
Online-Game: New round of Star Empire 2
A new round of the Internet-space-strategy-game "Star Empire 2"
will start on the 3rd of April.
The goal of the game (which is unfortunately German only)
is to become ruler of the universe - but there are up to 32 human
players and computer-controlled pirated to stop you.
Diplomacy, alliances, but also well-armed space-ships will be needed.
"Star Empire 2" is a server-based game, i.e. the game itself
runs on the computers of Virtual Dimension and every player
gets a weekly report about what's going on. Based upon this
information commands are sent back to the server. There's no
need for a client, because standard-html- and ascii-files are used.
The subscription to the new round will be possible until 2003/03/29,
the first reports will be sent out on Thursday, 2003/04/03. On that
day the old round - which had to be suspended due to technical
problems - will continue as well.
As a little goodie it is now possible to download the
"Star Empire 2"-Trailer from Virtual Dimension's anniversary
video seperately (sorry Timothy, it's still German only ;-).
P.S: The server program runs on AmigaOS, of course... :-) (nba)

DiscreetFX Logo For Dollars Cash Giveaway Challenge
DiscreetFX LLC Inc., Real-time Broadcast Quality Visual Effects developer for the Amiga/Video Toaster Flyer and Video Toaster [2] announces a new challenge for Amiga/Video Toaster artists worldwide.
Deep in the labs of DiscreetFX we are looking for a new logo but we can't find one and we are too lazy too design it ourselves. Also, we know there are some damn talented artists in the Amiga & Video Toaster community and wanted to give everyone a stab at doing it for us with cash and product incentives of course.
So here is the deal on our logo challenge. We will allow you the Amiga & Video Toaster community to design our new logo for us. Also we will post all submissions on our website and allow you the community vote on which logo we will use. So fire up those paint packages, animation packages and Flash creation tools fellow artists. We would not dare limit your creativity so we have very few limitations or rules for the challenge. Artwork/animations can be submitted as still images (IFF, JPEG, TIFF etc.), Flash animations, AVI files or whatever you wish. We only ask that whatever you submit is your original work and that it does not suck. What you submit must have the words "DiscreetFX" in some type of fancy pose or flash animation. Be creative and use your mind, we don't care if it is "Psygnosis" style or "New Age" style or "Retro" style. We leave the talent to you, all we offer is an open wallet for the winners. Don't forget that it will be voted on and judged by your peers so do a good job! Create your masterpieces with FlashMX, ImageFX 4.5, Zbrush, Photogenics 5, or even Deluxe Paint version 1 on the Amiga 1000, we don't care as long as the artwork is fantastic.
The Winner takes home a prize of $100 via Paypal and one of the products of his or her choice from our development team http://www.discreetfx.com/Products.html. Or if the Winner is especially greedy they can opt for just $200 via Paypal and skip the free software. There will be prizes for runner up contestants as well. You will have to hurry though because this contest ends on April 3rd, 2003.
Please send your contest entries to amigaart@discreetfx.com. All submitted artwork/animations become the property of DiscreetFX but will never be used without compensation to the artist that created them.
Also please don't forget that we still have a limited supply of the two CD set Amiga/Video Toaster version of Pyromania and it will be available for a short time at the sale price of $24.95. ScaryFX for the Amiga & Video Toaster is also still available for $19.95. Visit www.discreetfx.com for more information and the latest tools for your Amiga & Video Toaster. (nba)

New SVGA drivers for AROS
The developments on the alternative operating system project AROS had been driven hard in the last weeks by Matt Parsons.
The current beta release of AROS contains now new SVGA drivers. 16-bit and 32-bit screen resolutions (HiColor and TrueColor) are now possible. Problems are still caused by the graphics card family ATI-Radeon but these are said to be fixed soon.
Furthermore are a new CD-ROM and a new floppy version of AROS online that contain the new SVGA drivers. The usage of the CD-ROM version is explicitly recommended.
The developers point to the fact that the screenmode can be chosen at the beginning of the boot procedure. If in doubt you should choose 640*480*16. There's still an error occurring with the mouse pointer that is surrounded by a black box and that cannot reach all screen areas. The fixing of this error is also in the works.

Convention: Computer & Video Swap Meet Bremen - March 1st & 2nd, 2003
On the first and second of March 2003 the Computer and Video Swap Meet will take place in Bürgerzentrum Neue Vahr. On both days the hours of this convention are from 9 am until 5 pm. The gathering is a sales convention for end users; there will be hardware and software from many categories offered. The
Users of the North Sea Coast have two rooms this time. The Atari Computer Club of Bremen organizes the schedule with individual activities.
On the first level:
- Video-processing with the Amiga. DVD on the Amiga, Digital cameras on the Amiga, direct comparison between PPC and 060 (Earth 2140
and other games). The following software will be demonstrated: MediaPoint,
SCALA-MM-400, Digital-Almanac, AmiAtlas-6 and eventually iFusion and naturally TV on Amiga (PixelView in comparison to Picasso IV). Additionally a highly upgraded Amiga 4000D in an Elbox tower with PPC, USB and
PCI (TV, ethernet, sound und graphic cards) will be shown. The innards of this computer are visible through plexiglass casing under blue illumination, and it is just one of several Amigas to be seen
- Video-processing with Amiga, PC and Mac; here's where the newest programs line up to go for it. Old films may be digitally processed and placed on DVD through the use of internal or external expansions, and all this without using a PC or Mac.
- Linux KNOPPIX 3.1 (the CD is from the Federal Bureau for Security and Information Technology) will be demonstrated in an hard-drive installation.
On the second level:
- The Mac display area will be found here, and the following computers shown:
Pictures and Info.
- Many diverse hardware technologies of storage media clear through to viewable opened components will be shown. These systems will mostly be shown running, with explanations and demonstrations of the equipment. They'll be actively shown with the operating systems and software performing functions.
- During this time visitors themselves may do hands-on utilization of the equipment and/or play games.
- Additional some advertising spots from the 70s and 80s will be played.
The company Falkemedia will have free newspapers for Amiga and Mac available. A big thanks to A. Goukassian of Kiel.
Both days we're going to be running a webcam, reachable at the following URLs:
http://www.udnimweb.de/Webcam.html.
Addendum by Otto Dette by email:
We received news from Falcon that we'll be first receiving a preview CD of the video from the Aachen convention, in order to show it. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Emulator: Status Quo of UAE for Mac OS X
Both the port of the Unix Amiga Emulator for Mac OS X by Marin Saric and the development of Max UAE by Alex Kasic have been on ice for
several weeks. AMIGAplus editor Wolfgang Böhl reports on the status of UAE for Mac OS X:
The current Mac-modified source code version 0.8.22 beta 1 of Max UAE emulator was placed online at the beginning of January. This means
that compilation attempts and continued development by third parties are theoretically possible.
From the assortment of alternatives Wolfgang Böhl took a look at the UNIX sources, compiled them for the Mac OS X kernel, and tried to get
them running with Apple's X11 offering. And look: it works! After the first problems with a high crash tendency the emulator port is fairly
stable. Nevertheless there are problems with mouse emulation and poor performance. Accordingly, a graphical configuration menu is being
prepared right now.

Genesi: More Details about STBs, Pegasos I, and OS4
In two public comments on ANN
Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco made known some more details on, among other things, their STB (set-top box) activities and AmigaOS 4 for the Pegasos.
The previously announced first major contract for DTV/STB has an initial quota of 150,000 units (with the previously mentioned option of over one million units).
Beyond that, in the meantime, there has been a further DTV-STB project, which, it is stated, will insure the company's financial stability. This is to allow them to solidify their contractual obligations with business partners, developers and associates, building a stable foundation for the future.
The Debian team alone encompasses 20 developers, Genesi reports.
Of about 400-450 new Pegasos 1s there are supposedly only around 85 remaining.
Additionally it was once again pointed out that a broad web-based sales and support strategy will be built up. To this end better documentation and more online resources are needed, and a full palette of applications must be programmed or ported. This will require time and talent. And so more people are currently being sought for this mission. Interested parties should make themselves known to bbrv@genesi.lu.
With respect to AmigaOS: BBRV finds it a foregone conclusion that when OS4 is ready, it will find its way to the Pegasos. Not that Genesi will do this nor that it will require Genesi's support, only that somebody is going to do it. In relation to this BBRV intended to contact Ben Hermans (Hyperion) today. It is seen as a likelihood that in the end Hyperion will posess the IP rights to the classic AmigaOS, and then surely they will want to sell OS4 to every user with a PPC computer, and so BBRV is convinced that the Pegasos family of products will be there as the largest target market. clickBOOM: S-Files 22 - Cinemaware-Games
clickBOOM publishes details about Cinemaware-games in its latest S-Files 22: "Below you will be able to find more information on the current state of PC/Mac Digital Remasters (Wings, Lords of the Rising Sun, It Came from the Desert and Rocket Ranger) which we have been developing for over a year for Cinemaware, Inc.
Digital Remasters proved to be a very challenging, yet very satisfying undertaking, as it required disassembling a 10-15 year old code which was originally never meant to be used on anything other than the computers of that era (namely Amiga 500 and 8-bit consoles).
Late last year, however, regularly scheduled payments for development from Cinemaware suddenly stopped. Being a small team, it is imperative for clickBOOM that work we take makes financial sense. Therefore, our parent company, PXL, had to put development on hold or risk a financially difficult situation when working without payment.
We were willing to work towards a solution and were patiently waiting for payment from Cinemaware which would allow us to continue development. Unfortunately, lack of payment was also followed by 6 weeks of no communication from Cinemaware. It seemed as if they had gone out of business. Not even phone calls were being returned.
In the course of the past 3 months every effort was made on part of PXL to secure voluntary payment from Cinemaware, Inc. However, that has proved to be impossible, so PXL has no other alternative but to file a lawsuit against Cinemaware, Inc. for breach of contract and unpaid development cost.
Even after enduring all of this, it is still our hope that the situation can be resolved, so that we can finish these almost completed games. We believe it would be a shame for players around the world never to enjoy them.
To the many fans who have written and called, we want to say thank you. We will keep you posted." (nba)

RPG game: eVe status update
In January 2003 Emerald Imaging, known for the adventure game 'Aqua', announced a new game called 'eVe'.
The game will include hand drawn scenes and selected good music might increase the fun factor, too. Today some first early stage screen shots were published.
For the screen shots at the website of the title link it is emphasized that these are from an early and not final version and that they just should demonstrate the progress of work on eVe. Actually the focus is on development of the main game play and core programming, later on the graphics will be finished. Most main characters are finished already. Further information will follow soon.

AMIGAplus 02/2003 - a wolf in a sheep's robe
The Pegasos has arrived - even currently in small numbers. Within the new AMIGAplus 02/2003
(#133), which is currently on mail delivery, there are the following topics to read about:
Pegasos & MorphOS - the wolf in a sheep's robe
Walker, Boxer, Amirage, Hombre, pre\box, Puma, A5000
or MCC - all these have something unpleasant in common: Afther an announcement there was only deep silence.
Ten years after the CD32 as the last real Amiga innovation, this year the PowerPC based Pegasos brings some new winds to the poor sails of the Amiga market. Within our test we measure if this is more of a fresh storm or just a mild breeze.
indivision - Scandoubler & Flickerfixer
Scandoubler and flickerfixer which brought the world of the
PC monitors to the Amiga screen modes were there and are there from time to time. But individual computers are still good for a surprise with the introduction of their Scandoubler/Flickerfixer indivision:
For the first time there is a device available which can be used in conjunction with a genlock and so is usable for video post production.
Subway - Highspeed for the little
After the Zorro version Highway of the
USB controller family by E3B/Michael Böhmer gained big attention there is a version for the clockport available now:
The Subway. For us a reason to examine this card and to report about the progress made with the driver software Poseidon.
Crossfire II - Firepower party in space
During the last year there were not too much games for the Amiga community released. But this is no reason for desparation. There are numerous small teams all over the world that work on new Amiga games.
Mostly theses are new developments and no repeated ports.
One of these teams is called Dreamworlds Development. If the new action adventure "Crossfire II" can create coloured dream worlds shows our test.
Also read about:
- Quake II at the A+ focus
- Talk with Genesi
- SuperView 5 1.0 at a test
- Digital Almanac III 5.0 tested
- Interview with the Breakpoint organizers
- Programming workshop: Simple DirectMedia Layer, part 2
- Amiga Status Report: To be or not to be...
- and much more
The AMIGAplus is available by abonnement, via direct order and
at the Amiga dealers for EUR 5.-.
Please mind that the CD-ROM 20 will be delivered with the coming issue
03/2003.
Preview: In the coming issue #134 we will report about the following topics:
Tests of TKR LAM200E, IBrowse 2.3, VHI Studio 6 and Birdie Shoot,
compatibility report of MorphOS, launch of a
video workshop with Draco and much more. (nba) (Translation: ub)

individual Computers is the first sponsor of the Breakpoint Party
Since many years, individual Computers supports so-called scene-parties
that offer a forum for demo-programmers. A "demo" is a program that does
not require interaction with the user, as opposed to game demos. It's a
combination of graphics, music and special effects - a presentation of
the hardware capabilities, the programmer's and the artist's skills
(graphics and music).
The term "artist" is no exaggeration: The "Euro-style demo" has evolved
from a subculture of the 80s to a form of art that we already supported
with cash and hardware prizes on the legendary Mekka&Symposium parties.
Mekka&Symposium will not take place this year. The same experienced team
that was responsible for these parties organizes the Breakpoint Party on
Easter this year. It'll take place in Bingen, Germany. Many people still
confuse scene-parties with LAN-parties, but this is a big mistake:
A large-scale network is available, but gaming is frowned upon by the
scene's etiquette. (ps)

The data base management system for Amiga 'SatraDB' is under development for quite a while already. Because it is a hobby project progress was reported only rare. AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4 will arrive soon. Therefore the development team has decided to abandon the version for Classic-Amiga and develop SatraDB for the new system only.
The design of SatraDB is finished up to 90% and the development is up to
81%. Further technological details are to find by the title link at the "Product Information" area.

in other alternative platforms. Amongst other things, Linux will most likely
be demonstrated on the new AmigaOne. The exhibitors will be everything from
abroad companies to Swedish usergroups. The invitation to participate at
AmiGBG 2003 has not only been sent to "pure" Amiga companies but also to other
hardware manufactures.

Genesi needs immediately new and old games with small memory need that can be used in
a Set-Top-Box or a handheld device. It will be used the W@LK KEY. The W@LK Key can

New in A.D.A. archives: 'Wild/Anadune and near Kolor' and 'Phenomeno
'Amiga Demoscene Archives' now contains the following new demos:
Wild/Anadune and Nah Kolor. Yes! Probably Lazur's best slideshow and
amongst the best slideshows ever! Wonderful presentation, nice music
and stunning pictures. Released in 1996. Highly recommended!
Phenomenon/DCS. This could have been a killer demo but it is somewhat
spoiled by the slow and long 3D scene in the first part. Still, a
beautiful demo from one of the most talented teams in the Amiga
demoscene. As usual, stunning graphics by Adam (and optic), very
cool music (Illusion and Substance) and great effects and code by
Shape. Released at The Party 1998. Again, highly recommended! (ps) (Translation: sk)

Amiga Arena: Beambender release
In 1997 the first and at the same time last Amiga game by developer team
"Blue Lemon Studio" had been released by their erstwhile publisher "Verkosoft". With permission from the developers, who now call themselves
bluelemon, Amiga Arena
exclusively facilitates the free release of Beambender.
Beambender mixes action, thinking and skill elements. The goal of the game is to
hit all exits (target points of a laser beam) in their respective colour with
the help of various components (mirrors and colour changers). Extensive
instructions in German are included.
Beambender offers a.o.:
- more then 40 animations
- 80 nerve wrecking levels
- all in all 40 mins of music
- more than 20 special FX
- Single and Team mode
Beambender is immediately playable from hard disk or diskette. Amiga
Arena operator Olaf Köbnik extends special thanks to Bernhard Aichinger for the
support and permission. Special thanks also go to Alexander Mutscher who has
provided the game.

Genesi statement about the Pegasos II changes
This is a letter we sent out today to the "inside" group...(sorry no images!)...
22 February 2003
Dear Friends of Genesi,
We wanted to provide some basic communication this weekend to all of you, because
frankly our focus this past week has been the Management meetings here in Paris.
We hope that this letter will assist you in understanding more clearly the
direction of the Company. Please feel free to respond directly to us at
bbrv@genesi.lu with your questions. If you understand and share our vision,
you can adjust your effort to become more relevant to our corporate framework
if you desire.
As we have said before, Genesi stands on the verge of enormous opportunity.
We can provide a completely integrated solution, including hardware, operating
system, and a number of (bundled and unbundled) applications. We can innovate
in ways that involve the complete integrated package, rather than being limited
to new developments within each level by third parties (HP and Microsoft are not
as self-reliant in this way). Genesi and our associates need to leverage this
advantage fully. We are smaller, faster and will be necessarily more adventurous
in our efforts. Do not hesitate to share your most creativity ideas with these
mailing lists. Together, we believe we can create a substantial and long
awaited change to the IT marketplace.
In the first BIG opportunity to our Company, we are required to develop using a
PPC and MorphOS, a terrestrial Digital Television receiver with interactive/computing
and smart card read and write functions (to be referred to as the DTV STB). This
product will not require the use of the Articia and we will be producing significant
quantities in the development phase and a special version of MorphOS (without hurting
the complete version). If we deliver the DTV STB in a satisfactory manner we will
be eligible to receive orders for over one million units. It is a once-in-a-lifetime
professional opportunity for all of us. We need to make the most of it.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the years of dedication required
to bring the Pegasos and MorphOS to where it is today. We are all proud to be
associated with the bplan guys. The difficulties over the last year have nothing
to do with them. It is the Articia from Mai Logic that has caused us months of
delays. It does not perform to the advertised specifications. Thankfully, Gerald
and Thomas tested and mounted the Aritica on the April2. That is right -- the April2.
The first patch that Gerald and Thomas developed works as we know, but there were
still bugs. The new Articia (and Teron) is still very likely to have trouble as
more problems were detected after the Aachen Show and well after the joint work
Gerald did with for the new Articia in October and November with Mai. The April2
brings the Articia fully to the performance levels it claims to achieve. We have
purchased the remaining worldwide supply of the old Articias and will make 400 more
Pegasos main boards with the G3 CPU. Our G3 Pegasos performs better than the G4
Teron with the Articia. This will be common knowledge soon (let the others understand
this on their own our word will stand as testimony to our knowledge and skill). Once
produced, we will stop (we may license production of this version of the Pegasos to
Plexuscom or others). These machines will easily satisfy the Amiga market and give
us the machines we need to seed our developer base while Gerald and Thomas switch out
the old Articia to a much more attractive alternative (details later). This could be
ready by the summer. The RAM speed of the Pegasos will be as high as any offered in the
market and this WILL attract considerable interest. The DTV STB revenue can carry us
until this point (remember this IS a business we hope you Developers begin to remember
this!).
To repeat a few words from an earlier communication?
If our strategic vision is compelling and our execution excellent, we will increasingly
attract skilled developers. What Ralph, Frank and the core MorphOS Development Team have
accomplished to date is exceptional, but now we need to establish a professional
development and management system for MorphOS, formally retain the services of all
key MorphOS developers, and recruit new talent to the project. We have struck on the
Phoenix association to develop a vehicle to do this. All registered Phoenix members
must use a special Phoenix logon and password to have access to the reduced Pegasos
pricing that will be available through www.pegasos-usa.com.
We need to be somewhat selective in insuring that these next boards go to people that
will advance in communion with our effort and our internal developers and Phoenix members
will have priority. We will also develop the User Group program next week and a system
for handling Pegasos sales so our Distributors also benefit.
Our targeted resource/sales markets from the near to medium term are:
1. Amiga/MorphOS
2. DTV STB
3. LinuxPPC and OtherPPC
We will continue to promote to the Amiga/MorphOS market, as we have. Our underlying focus
should be: broadening and stabilizing MorphOS, attracting applications and drivers
(ports/original programs), and establishing a Pegasos toolkit. At the same time,
www.pegasos-usa.com is working
and our online sales support and information site at
www.genesi-support.com
will continue to improve. If we are lucky we will awaken and attract the slumbering
ex-Commodore consumer market, but that will take some time and we are not quite ready
for mass-market attention. The sites will be there and ready. Until we are ready with
the Pegasos II we will not promote the sites as much as we could. Plus, we will
standardize the Pegasos distribution network over the next few months taking a
semi-franchise approach. When we are ready, everything will be in place.
On the hardware side we start where we are: the Pegasos. We have discussed the
features: upgradeable, scalable, modifiable (smaller eclipsis, subsets/modular
Psylent/STB), and open, as in Open Firmware (facilitates scheme for peripheral
association/development IAW the IE1275 standard). We will develop a solid plan
and feature set for each Pegasos envisioned and the corresponding software bundles.
The management review that took place this week was very successful. We have
defined and agreed to our objectives and are now preparing a solid plan for the
future.
NOTE: for 200 Euros and trade-in ALL Pegasos I Users (includes Betatesters) WILL
be able to upgrade to the Pegasos II (just to put an end to that FUD!).
About Linux and the other targets? OS4 too -- ;-)
Linux people usually want something great for nothing, but in the PPC market if
we can get a design win over the Teron the next price point is a Mac. As more
professionals and desktop consumers switch to Linux, the future of commercial
software on Linux is very bright and so is our hardware. Functionality will
become precedent over cost in this market. We need a bootable bundled distro
and Mac-on-Linux. Linux will be a major force in the future. Today, it is still
difficult to install software, drivers, set up firewalls, etc., but because of
the generous licensing environment and the massive corporate support Linux is
gaining (IBM, HP, etc.) as well as government mandates and funding in many
countries, it is set to become the "next big thing". We need to be
part of that trend.
Any PPC OS that is reasonable to port with external resources is interesting to
us. We need a Go/NoGo decision matrix. Again, we are looking for resources and
developer talent. For example, while Linux gets the glory, BSDs are running
some of the biggest sites. We have seen the first screenshots of OpenBSD running
on the Pegasos. Further, there is an increasing amount of interesting open source
projects we could find a way to adapt to our use.
Finally, we are interested in restoring the Demo Scene to the Pegasos. The
traditional and overt message in a demo was technical skill. The visual effects
pushed the supposed limits of the platform's capability and graphics were
skillfully executed. Good demos are the marriage of advanced technical, creative
and artistic abilities. For the future, we need a new generation of Sceners to be
pulling the most from the platform and the OS. This can generate plenty of
positive attention. Besides the nVidia butterfly lady has the wrong color wings!
This is why we decided to sponsor Equinoxe.
All these other things all ultimately bring us back to our key advantage: a
completely integrated solution, including hardware, operating system, and
applications. Management is working hard to turn this vision into a reality.
While the sale of the Pegasos and MorphOS alone could never sustain the Company
we are building, it may one day in the future. We use the Pegasos today to
begin our move to the future, while insuring the development and growth of the
MorphOS. Things could get pretty exciting if we can get that far. Let us not
forget that 30 million STBs sold last year and they were called video game
consoles.
Please feel free to provide any feedback to us.
Sincerely,
Raquel and Bill

SciTech asks for comments regarding the SNAP-Graphics future
This week announced the AmigaOS 4 developer Hyperion Entertainment to use the SNAP technology by SciTech Software Inc. as graphics cards driver system for AmigaOS 4 (we reported).
Today asks SciTech on OSNews for commments regarding future versions of SNAP-Graphics.
SciTech SNAP Graphics supports now 180 different graphics chipsets. Feedback by users show that this number would be too high. The company wants to know from the users how many and especially which graphics cards should be supported in the next release. Furthermore they ask for the operating systems that shall be supported in the future.

Artwork from Visualice at GFXZONE
There are quite a few sceners that have been around for a long time,
but few have been as active as Visualice used to be. This guy has worked
on a staggering amount of demoscene productions.
Unfortunately for us Visualice recently left Haujobb to concentrate
on other forms of art. We have updated his personal gallery on the gfxzone
with plenty of high-quality graphics.
The updated gallery consists of 5 parts with 100 images in total,
most of which are now finally available in their full PNG quality for
the first time ever (thanks Timo!!). Older images are in the first parts
of the gallery, more recent images can be found nearer to the end.
To show that Visualice is also graphically active in a non-digital way,
the fourth part of the gallery shows sketches. Some of the sketches that
Visualice provided for us to show in his gallery are also available for
purchase online, check it out if you are interested!
Enter the updated Visualice gallery and start enjoying.

300 Pegasos-I freely available from Monday on - Pegasos-II from September on
As Genesi reported on MorphOS-News.de
the last Pegasos mainboards of the first generation are available from Monday on.
300 pieces of the 400 are freely available and the rest will be delivered to developers
and the staff.
Genesi emphasizes that there will be no further production of the Pegasos-I-boards.
In August/September the Pegasos-II will follow which has double data rates, three 1-GB/s
Ethernet channels and Dual-G4 processors.
There will be no possibility of upgrading the Pegasos-I to G4 but a special possibility
for the Pegasos-I customer.
This Genesi wants to especially emphasizes before you buy a Pegasos-I.
All beta tester who have not been changed yet have the most important priority.

e.p.i.c.: Knights & Merchants for MorphOS starts shipping
Today e.p.i.c. interactive started shipping the Empire Builder Knights &
Merchants, which is now the first commercially available game for MorphOS.
Knights&Merchants retails at EUR 49,95 and requires a Pegasos with 600 Mhz, 64
MByte RAM and MorphOS 1.0 or better. More information on this Real Time
Strategy game can be found in the projects section of our homepage (title
link).
Knights and Merchants can be described as a strategic economy simulation. In
the main, the economics play a major role in this real-time action game. The
player can manufacture different products, making use of numerous buildings
and producer goods of the Middle Ages period. He can use his serfs to
construct and maintain buildings and roads. The economical structuring is
very specific. You manufacture finished products using various raw materials
which go through your production processes. All these manufacturing systems
are highly detailed and visually understandable, enabling fast and
dependable control of your economy. One result of all your productive labors
is the manufacture of weapons and armor. But the logistics, too, are really
worth a mention. You decide where and how merchandise will be transported on
the network of streets which you yourself have planned and constructed.
Your
serfs transport all wares between buildings, so your town planning plays a
major role in production time per building, and, resulting from that, just
how efficient your economy as a whole is going to be. Transported goods are
displayed graphically. Each figure in the game has his/her own mission area
and carries out individual tasks independently. They don't depend on your
commands or actions. You, the player, only give indirect commands for the
construction of buildings, streets, corn fields, etc. However, you do have
complete control of the military units.
Dealers please contact GTI/Schatztruhe. (ps)
