Virus Help Denmark: xvs.library v33.31
A new update of the "xvs.library" has been released today. In this new update the xvs.library should detect 99.9% of all 'Hitch-Hiker 5.00 virus". The programmer Jan Erik Olausen, has been working very hard for the last 10 days to get the recog. right for this very tricky virus.

Info about the new update of xvs.library:

Name: xvs.library v33.31
Archive name: xvslibrary.lha
Archive size: 58.874 bytes
Release date: 30 August 2001
Programmer: Jan Erik Olausen

News is v33.31:
  • Improved the Hitch-Hiker 5.00 Link virus. Should be able to detect 99.9% of this virus now... Thanks to Jan Andersen and Treveur BRETAUDIERE for the files
  • Fixed bug in recog for Bastard Installer 1 File virus
  • Added recog for 'EICAR STANDARD AV-TEST FILE'. This is not a virus, but a testfile that can be found on http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm. The purpose of this test file is to check that your favourite anti virus program really finds it! Deep inside arhcives etc... PS! This is a data file, so you might turn on the 'data file checking' in your virus killer. Thanks to Sami Rautiainen for telling me about this file.
Download shortcut: http://home4.inet.tele.dk/vht-dk/amiga/xvs/xvs.htm

Remember if you use VirusZ, VirusChecker, Safe and VirusExecutor you must update the xvs.library to have recog for the latest viruses.....

Virus Help Denmark: Safe Version 16.5
A new update of "Safe" has been released today. Also the programmer of Safe has very big problem with the new 'Hitch-Hiker 5.00' virus. But we are working to make recog. for the virus in xvs.library. I have included the test of 'Hitch-Hiker 5.00' at the button.

Info about the new update of Safe:

Name: Safe v16.5
Archive name: Safe.lha
Archive size: 35.456 bytes
Release date: 30 August 2001
Programmer: Zbigniew Trzcionkowski

News is v16.5:
  • added possibility to change name of safe on installation. It was necessary - new viruses like HH50 and SMEG2b refuse to infect Safe file. This trend will surely remain, so now Safe gives the user the easy way avoid that. Big thanks for Antonio Noguera, who did this improvement! This is piece of good work - even better I expected!
  • removed some outdated info from html documentation Note that the most useful information is here and in NewShit.guide. Thanks to Michael Hendren for paying attention.
  • removed SMEG2/PENETRATOR removals as xvs.library recognizes them now
  • added analyze of HitchHiker5.00 the most advanced polymorphic bastard in the Amiga universe
Download shortcut: http://home4.inet.tele.dk/vht-dk/amiga/safe/safe.htm

=== Start of HitchHiker 5.00 Virus ===

Entry: HitchHiker 5.00
Alias(es): -
Virus Strain: Smeg2
Virus detected when: August 2001
where: Aminet
Classification: Linkvirus,memory-resident, not reset-resident
Length of Virus: 1. Length on storage medium: c.a. 3720 Bytes
Has most advanced metamorphic decoders seen for Amiga and uses slow polymorphism!
2. Length in RAM: 8588 Bytes

--- Preconditions ---

Operating System(s): AMIGA-DOS Version/Release.....: 2.04+ Computer model(s): all models/processors (MC68000-MC68060)

--- Attributes ---

Easy Identification: -

Type of infection:
  • Self-identification method in files:
    - via unused bits visible in dos flags
  • Self-identification method in memory:
    - checks for 'HH5' process
  • System infection:
    - A new process entitled 'HH5' will be created and this is the only visible change in the system. That process infects files using the known Smeg code, but the way of getting targets is new.
    - The virus patches return address from Wait() call of device's tasks. This is very clever idea which lets the virus patch devices which's code is placed even in ROM. The LOCATE_OBJECT and EXAMINE_NEXT packets will be stolen.
  • Infection preconditions:
    - HUNK_CODE is found
    - device is validated
    - at least 6 free blocks
    - filename does not start with "vir" and "saf"
    (case independant check)
    - file is bigger than 4190 bytes
    - file is smaller than 100377 bytes
Infection Trigger:
  • The infection is based on the packet handling of AMIGA OS. Every started or listed file can be infected.
Storage media affected:
  • all DOS-devices
Interrupts hooked:
  • None
Damage:
  • Permanent damage: - none
  • Transient damage: - none
Damage Trigger:
  • Permanent damage: - none
  • Transient damage: - none
Particularities:
  • Uses slow polymorphism! Only this little fact mislooked by Jan Erik Olausen (and Jan Andersen) made filedetection in xvs.library the biggest AV joke seen for Amiga computers ever! At the moment xvs.library detects 3 variants of virus from several millions possible!
  • The stack patches are done very clever and the code is flexible enough to handle differences between OS versions (including newer than 3.1). Most of code is equal to first SMEG virus. If the accessed file starts with the string "VIR" or "SAF" (case independant), the file will be not infected.
Similarities:
  • It could be seen as third kind of SMEG2, but the polyengine made it one of the most advanced viruses for Amiga.
Stealth:
  • None. The virus does not put infected file length like BOBEK viruses to ExNext's FIB, so it is likely that under controll of virus user will cut files. Salvage will be never possible as it was for HH4.11 which's files several times appeared in truncated form due to it's stealth... :-)
Armouring:
  • Uses so called HAVOC polyengine. This is the best such engine in Amiga virus at the moment. The decoders are placed after the decoder block, and the loop could contain very much logical stuff. The decoders are made metamorphically and are built of various jumps backward and forward.
Such decoders can be detected only in alghorythmic way. Detection of this virus is impossible with technics like breaking the cryptings (lot of stuff) and tracing (entry point!).
The decoder is generated on virus startup, so after reboot files are infected always with new decoders.
Comments:
  • The virus contains text: HAVOC
I have been working with one copy of HH5.0. Even there really exist clones of HH5.0 I think that if the polyengine detection will be working for one, will be good for others.

Tool: ScreamerII Version 0.84 for Amiga-Lightwave
Alexander Fritsch wrote:
Ray Darrah III released a new version of his ScreamerNet controller "ScreamerII". ScreamerII allows shared computing of Lightwave scenes on several machines.

ScreamerII but is essentially more flexible than the built-in ScreamerNet controller of Lightwave. For example one computer can render a picture while simultaneously another project gets edited in layout .

Furthermore other computers dynamic can be added to or removed from ScreamerNet. All machines can be reseted, computing will then be continued from the proper point ( no new starting picture must be defined in the project).

Additionally the single RenderNodes can have their own names, instead of CPU1, CPU2 like usual. The new version 0.84 fixes a small bug with the computer names display. A. Fritsch: "I've tested the program for several days and I'm excited!"

Again there are a lot of innovations to our online magazine GFX-Base: A new section 'Customize' was created where you can find patches, hacks, and tools to make your WB look better. We also enhanced our search engine to make it even more easy to find e.g. all PPC scene demos or games supporting graphics boards. Now our news archive can be searched in a comfortable way, too. Furthermore we have started a new survey to learn which GFX-BASE area is most important to you. As usual there are new entries with graphics board supporting games and scene demos. (ps)

amiga-news.de: Torsten Dudai stops drawing caricatures
Since July of 1999 Torsten Dudai has supported amiga-news.de by drawing of outstanding caricatures. But some time ago Torsten made him self-employed in the section of webdesign. As anyone knows at the beginning of a self-employment you have to bale all your power to lead the firm to a succesful way.

On the one hand this change but on the other hand also the fact that in the Amiga sector the amount of news reduces of which you could create a caricature were the reasons why Torsten decided to stop drawing caricatures.

We are very sad about this decision but we can understand it, too. We really enjoyed the caricatures many times. The caricatures reflected very precisly the respective situation.

Torsten, we know that you will become a very great webdesigner and wish you all the best for your future!

amiga-news.de celebrates third anniversary :-)
For three years our team delivers messages of the Amiga-sector and topics which are generally important for computer and Internet to you. The last year was espacially exciting for us because the new scripts and with it the possibilities to post comments have been a freshening aspect. Although sometimes the ´freshening aspect´ was rather a ´ half-hearted breath of air´. Nevertheless the comments have become an important part of amiga-news.de. Since the introduction in January of 2001 over 16,000 comments have been given to our messages.

Interesting because it is still always exciting to see how the market develops - or how it does not. In the present time it is quite difficult to understand what will happen - or what will not. Sometimes it is really hard to find the truth between promises, announcements, exaggerations, rumors and disputes. But just this is the attraction - to see how comparatively small groups of enthusiasts can finally start great projects. This is a goad for us make us hopeful.

In our history read how amiga-news.de has developed in the past three years, who collaborates and spends his free time for our team gratuitously.

I personally want to thank all the helpful hands because without work of each single one amiga-news.de would not be that what it is today. I want to thank all the readers, authors, developers and programmers which deliver all the messages. I espacially want to thank our advertising partners which help us to finance our website with its banner advertisement. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Max Payne developer are (active!) Amiga-freaks
Silvio Senger writes:
Maybe the following message does not really fit to the news but I think that it is interesting for most of the Amiga-fans:

For some weeks there is a new action hero in the PC-world called MAX PAYNE. It lasts nearly five years to develop the game and it certainly is one of the hits of this year, at least in the PC-fan-community. It is known that some Amiga-Fans developed this game.

On the this year's ASSEMBLY in Finland (with nearly 5000 visitors one of the biggest demo/LAN-parties; www.assembly.org) where the best freaks also compete in a "demo-competition" PC- and Amiga-demos have been shown together in one competition. It was amazing to see that a team which made its demo on a Amiga was the winner. (as amiga-news.de reported).

And that is remarkable: The members of the group ´MatureFurk´ behind this demo all work at Mad Onion (known by its benchmark program 3DMark2001). The graphic artist mainly participates on Max Payne.

And there is another curious thing: Exactly the same group won on the last ASSEMBLY the PC-demo competition. The demo has the same name as the AMIGA winner demo on the ASSEMBLY 2001.

The following links are interesting:
Detailed interview with the graphic artist of the DEMO, which participates on Max Payne
Download of AMIGA DEMOS (requires 68060 + AGA + 16 MB memory!)

Repulse-driver for NetBSD/Amiga
A driver for the "repulse" board by Aliendesign was added to the NetBSD-current yesterday.

Repulse is a Zorro II interface to an AC97 compliant Audio CODEC and additional S/P-DIF circuitry. The NetBSD driver currently only supports 8-48 kHz mono or stereo 8 or 16 bit audio data from/to the analog part. The missing features will be added later.

The driver was added to NetBSD-current, the development branch of NetBSD. The NetBSD projects invites volunteers to test this code. Problems should be reported on the NetBSD port-amiga mailing list or (preferred) through the NetBSD bug tracking system.

The repulse driver is expected to be available in the NetBSD-1.6 formal release.

New swiss onlineshop offering Amigaproducts
Gutzwiller+Dozic Systems, a dealer from Switzerland, is proud to announce the opening of their onlineshop. The shop offers mobile phones, digital cameras, as well as hardware and software for the Playstation2, PC and Amiga. Later on there will be products for the Macintosh and for Audio and Video available, too.

Marc 'Gutzi' Gutzwiller of Gutzwiller+Dozic Systems: "I would like to mention that the Amiga-area is still beta. We know that the Amiga market is very small and that it is not possible to earn money in this market. There are only some but really good Amiga-dealers. Due to this facts we will offer Amiga products as long as we do not loose any money by doing this. Because I am using Amigas since the good old Amiga 500 I hope that we can support Amiga as long as possible. Feel free to mail what you think about our shop. We are pleased about any reaction." Digital Almanac III - Update V4.0 and V4.1 (Update)
As already announced last weekend the update of Digital Almanac III is available for all registered customers, now.

Unfortunately this update has to be delivered in two parts. The initial archive (v4.0, 4MB) still contained two bugs, but which have been fixed in the second part (v4.1, 1,4MB).

The update to v4.1 strongly requires v4.0! The new and automatic update function of the program works with v4.1 only.

The update archives should appear on Aminet during the following days. Extra hasty people may download the files from the mailing list.

ACBB live report from the IFA (Update)
A short report from the IFA (with the kind support of ifa-hammer.de) by the ACBB.

In hall 3.2a you will find the Sharp SL5000 (Zaurus). After initial problems (nobody knew about Amiga at the PDA booth) A4k, Trion, and me, Gojira, found Mrs. Boxberg (Product Manager Sharp Germany).

She found very much time to show us a Zaurus with miscellaneous Amiga applications. Later some guy with an Amiga logo on his shirt appeared. That was Sanjay Menon, Vice President Engineering Amiga Inc.. He had a prototype with more applications with him, too.

Mrs. Boxberg mentioned that Sharp is wanting contact with German Amiga developers and there might be an announcement at amiga-news.de, soon.

This was the report by the ACBB so far. More information and pictures are on our site. (sd)

Met@box: Refloating loan from the shareholder community?
On 22. August 2001 the 'Metabox AG' enquired a short-term refloating loan in the amount of 1 million Euro from the 'Aktionärsgemeinschaft Metabox' (shareholder community Metabox). This money is needed to maintain business operations until the general meeting. Without this money already within the next few days insolvency proceedings will be opened.

Thereafter the shareholder community formed a delegation, which is inspecting the Metabox AG to estimate chances for sanitation, since last Friday.

From the inspections was derived (quotation):
«1) The company should be sustained. A sellout of the values created by the shareholder's fund should be prevented without fail.

2) We should appeal to make available the required short-term sum of one million Euro. The securities given let us estimate a low loan contingency risk.»

Amiga Flame

Amiga Flame: PDA - Interviews with Moss (Amiga) and Steiding (epic)
At Amiga Flame several texts were released for the subject PDA games and AmigaDE. Fleecy Moss, Amiga Inc., emphases in the interview, that the main focus of AmigaDE is to provide an environment in which content can be used hardware independent. So the agreement with Sharp allows to use AmigaDE content on Sharp's devices, but Amiga also works together with other companies. AmigaDE already runs on different devices in the laboratory in Snoqualmie, including the currently most popular PDAs as well as those soon to be released, and additional on Linux and Windows desktops. From AmigaOS v4.2 AmigaDE also will be available for AmigaOne machines.

To reduce language problems for the Japanese market in particular games are created to be used via icons only, as much as possible. But in the future there will be a localizing service offered, too.

Epic Interactive announced early August to develop AmigaDE software. Amiga Flame asked Thomas Steiding about the reasons behind this PDA engagement.

On reason for Epic Interactive to support the PDA market are the development times of 2 - 3 month for PDA games, which are definite shorter than for desktop games (18 - 24 month). That gives clear less risk.

Since the PDAs don't match the currently popular 3D titles, these represent a completely different market with card games, puzzles, and shoot'em ups which sale well in the PDA market, but would not be accepted for desktops, these days.

Due to the PDAs low performance compared to desktops Steiding thinks Amiga developers to well suit PDA games development, since those rather are used to handle more inefficient machines than e.g. Windows developers are.

Finally he describes the titles Epic Interactive will release, soon. Those also are listed on Amiga PDA Games along with other titles. (sd) (Translation: mj)

A500: Viper 530 Relaunch Project
The 'Viper 530 Relaunch Project' is an initiative to re-produce the 'Viper 530' for the Amiga 500, which is about a CPU socket extension for the A500 with the following features: CPU 68030 (50MHz), FPU 68882 (50MHz) slot, one SCSI-2 interface, 3 IDE ports (1x2,5", 2x3,5"), up to 128MB RAM (72 Pin SIMM), and Kickstart 2.04.

IFA: Allrounder: Sharp Personal Mobile Tool SL-5000
»The Japanese Sharp company will introduce their new pocket sized Personal Mobile Tool SL-5000 on the IFA 2001. The most important tools of this little allrounder are web-browsers, mobile phone, e-mail, and a MP3 player. Quick operation of any business task is guaranteed by the 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, 32 MB SDRAM for memory, as well as the operating system Linux OS (kernel 3.4). The users are forced to access the in many cases unfamiliar display keyboard, since below the operating front, which can be pulled off, there is a QWERTZ keyboard. Operating time basically is not limited, the different battery packs can be recharged separately. The SL-5000 can be extended with SD or multimedia cards and compact flash memory cards. Even a video camera module can be connected to it. But the Personal Mobile Tool was not made for business purposes only: The cooperation with Amiga Inc. and their wide range of games make it a small games machine. The device is said to be available at the vendor's from December.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

At last a DVD software player for Amiga?

But it's hardly known that the latest beta version of AMP2 has got direct DVD support including free choice of the video sequence to be played and the language for sound and sub-titles. All that get's configured by requesters which pop up one by one, but only works if AMP2 was started from CLI.

KOSH News
For a long time there were no news about the 'KOSH' organisation [Kommunity Orientated Software Hardware] founded by Fleecy Moss. As John Chandler wrote KOSH still does exist and was formal registered in England by the name of Kommunity Systems Limited in May 2001.

Late this year Kommunity Systems Limited will release a 'cross-platform development package':

»Kommunity Systems Limited will be working towards an initial cross-platform development package for later this year, using off-the-shelf open source tools. Kommunity Systems Limited is pleased to announce this will be undertaken in support of hardware developer Ideas2Reality.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

MUI tutorial
Richard Kapp writes:
Because some users have contacted me because concerning my MUI-configuration and because I asked myself what I have used for it and how I have preferenced it I have decided to put a MUI tutorial online.

In this tutorial I introduce my personal configuration called 'CoolMUI'. Fonts, images and patterns are assumed which you can download from this site. But what I want to achieve with it is that the users may create their own MUI-designs. This tutorial is also meant as a creative motivation. But all those who enjoy the 'CoolMUI'-look of course can assume it.

In addition to it on the site there are useful hints to MUI, useful links and downloads (e.g. patterns which are related to the 'CoolMUI'-configuration and which you can only find on this site). You can also download the tutorial as a LZX-archive for offline reading. Have fun! (ps) (Translation: dr)

Network driver beta 0.17 available
A RTL8029 based network cards driver for Prometheus is available from Files section. It is still beta, yet should be stable and useful. Any found bugs please report to krashan@matay.pl.

We would also like to inform our customers that Blittersoft (United Kingdom), Vesalia Computer (Germany) and Virtual Works (Italy) have joined our distributors network in Europe. From now on, you can buy Prometheus PCI bridge also from them.

Coyote Flux moves to Paris
Since early July 2001 we have moved to Paris to live and do some classified (Amiga) projects. This doesn't mean that our previous projects are discontinued, but like expected these projects are slightly delayed. PPC680x0 2.0 is reaching the final state of development, with several big improvements and bug-fixes in the Floating Point engine and all the additional features from the PPC680x0 page.

The 3D engine is our main focus at the moment, developed to be a games engine as well as professional photogrammetry/mapper software. More information on the 'Mapper' (which is finished) will be released soon as well as some screenshots. Little note about the speed: Both the 68060 (80-bits FPU) and PPC604 (64-bits FPU) versions are written in optimized assembly language and the 604/233MHz runs the same program 15 times faster than the 68060/60MHz which is quite an improvement. The 64-bits FPU 3D engine renders 3 million "real" depthcued polygons in less than 4 seconds using several realtime correction filters.

We are working on an Amiga hardware project as well, although this is currently strictly confidential. Details will be released soon... :-) (ps) (Translation: sk)

P.S.: To enter the tubes in the swamp just go right and climb to the top of the liana. Turn right and jump onto the trees. Then walk to the end of the trees and use the bladecrook to jump in one of the tubes. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Virus Help Denmark: VirusExecutor V2.20
A new update of VirusdExecutor has been released today.

Here is some info about the update:

Name : VirusExecutor v2.20
Archive name : VirusExecutor.lha
Archive size : 281.228 bytes
Release date : 20 August 2001
Programmer : Jan Erik Olausen
Requires : xvs.library (included), xfdmaster.library, reqtools.library, xadmaster.library

Changes since last version

2.20
  • VE doesn't need the VirusExecutor: assign anymore, so you can delete some lines in s:user-startup. IMPORTANT! All files that comes with VE must be in the same directory where the main program are located! (Not libraries and catalogs).
  • Recoded 'View patch memory'... It's quite similar to the memory monitor in VirusZ.
  • Thanks to Harry, VE do get the right opcodes when checking for patched functions.
  • Added decoding of 4 shell-scripts. The DKG-Blum and Jode Capullos virus was hiding in such scripts.
  • Fixed some 'out of address' bugs while checking memory.
  • Added AHI device channel 0 right.
  • Fixed small bug in the vector check window, that could cause strange characters to be displayed.
  • Fixed bug when removing a deleted file from the watch list.
  • Added close gadget to the prefs window.
  • Added 'Fast file checking' to the prefs window. Activating this flag will disable all text output, memory checking and some error messages during file checking...
  • When the 'Skip encrypted files'-flag are set, encrypted arhives are also skipped.
  • Added LVO names to device functions.
  • Fixed text out of range bug when viewing memory.
  • Fixed Enforcer hit in 'View KickMemPtr/KickMemPtr'.
  • When VE is infected with a virus it says it is modified and quits. Stupid, cause when a virus is around, VE should not quit! Fixed.
  • Added powerpc.library recog to 'Soft Int'
  • Added COP to memory recog.

Thanks to Harry Sintonen and Joerg Riemer for reporting bugs/hits and for all suggestions and help...

Matt Parsons (AROS-User-ML)

AROS: IBM-PC/native on one single floppy disc
Matt Parsons released a new native version of AROS for IBM-PC compatibles, which can be installed to one single floppy disc for direct booting.

This version contains a working format command and allows to install AROS to a harddisk or partition. With the boot disk this harddisk installation can be used.

The graphical output still is very simple, so don't expect AROS to benefit from the speed of your board, at this time.

The readme included to the archive describes how to create a boot disk under Windows 95+ or Linux.

AROS is an open source project to implement a portable version of AmigaOS v3.1.

Virus Help Denmark: Virus warning II
Here we go again....... Yet, again another installer of the new virus 'Hitch-Hiker 5.00'.

Again there is "NO" cure for this virus right now. You can find infected files, you will have to replace the infected files with new clean files. This installer will install the 'Hitch-Hiker v5.00' virus will add 3748 bytes to every infected file, and place it self in memory, so you will have to watch out for that as well. This virus will infect anything that it can get into.

There is a way to see if the archive you download is an installer of this virus, all you have to do is to unpack the archive, read the file in an text editor (eg. CygnusEd), and search for this text string in the code (THIS IS ONLY FOR THE INSTALLER):

-=COVAH=-

If you find -=COVAH=- in the code, that is an installer of this virus then please send he archive to us.

The virus size has change this time, now it is 3748 bytes.

In the code (decoded), you can read:

Hitch-Hiker Millenium (5.00) Featuring the Hitcher's Advanced Versatile Optimizing Codemix Engine A welcome present for Jan Erik by xxxxxx/xxx! -= On Tour 1995-2001 =-

(VHT-Denmark removed the names of the programmer handle, and replaced it with 'xxxxxx')

If this is a welcome present for Jan Erik Olausen, the programmer of VirusExecutor & xvs.library, I think that he would rather have a cold beer. But he will surely put recog. for Hitch-Hiker 5.00 in the new update of xvs.library...

The archive was uploaded to AmiNet, but it has been removed now. (Thanks Urban).

This is what we know of the virus:

Virus Type.... : Linkvirus
Virus name.... : Hitch-Hiker 5.00 (Millenium)
Virus size.... : 3748 bytes
Archive name.. : S-Exec12.lha
Archive size.. : 9.905 bytes (lha packed)
Installer name : LibBase3.10
Installer size : S-Exec
Archive info.. : Compress executables.

There might just be more installers of the 'Hitch-Hiker 5.00' virus out there, we have found 3 archive in 2 days. If you find anything please send it to us.

The 'xvs.library' (external Virus Scanner library) will be updated as soon as possible. In the mean time, take care...

Thanks to D. Olsen for the info about the archive and to Ronald Dijk for sending the archive to us.

Server software: 68020 version of AmiVNC available
Rüdiger Engel wrote:
Unfortunately the Amiga version of the VNC server AmiVNC was compiled for the 68060 and therefore doesn't run on slower Amigas. I had asked the author, Stéphane Guillard, to create a version for 68020 processors but unfortunately couldn't contact him. So I have compiled a version for the 68020 and made it available for download.

Download: AmiVNC-020.lzx

The archive has been taken over completely from Stéphane Guillard, the new files only carry the appendix "-020" in the name. (ps) (Translation: wk)

The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition Nr. 1 in USA
Just now some statistics have been released on the Airsoft Softwair hompage regarding the ´The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition CD-ROM´. Among other things the different systems of the users have been evaluated, but also e.g. the countries the CD-ROM has already been sent to. The most CD-ROMs went to the USA, followed by Great Britain and Germany. Looking at the systems the most often mentioned one is the A1200, regarding the processors the 68060 was numbered out by the 68030 narrowly. All statistics can be viewed on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Elbox explains their price policy for driver software
As already reported, Elbox has announced on the 16.08.2001 a CD with driver software you have to pay for. This has led to big and extensive discussions. In the following email Elbox explains their price policy:

ELBOX Computer explains its policy about driver pricing

1. The purpose of MEDIATOR

To ENABLE the POSSIBILITY of using a wide range of standard PCI cards.

'The MEDIATOR PCI busboard line is designed to enable expanding the Amiga with a wide range of standard PCI cards like Graphic cards, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network cards, Modem cards, ISDN cards, USB and SCSI cards, Sound cards and Multimedia cards: TV tuner and MPEG-2 hardware decoders.

Expanding the Amiga with the MEDIATOR PCI busboard opens the way to employing the power of the latest PowerPC G3/G4 processors in Amiga, around which SharkPPC and SharkPPC+ cards are based.'

However, it does not mean that we will prepare ALL the possible drivers for ALL the possible devices and their different versions.

We want to enhance Amiga's effectiveness and give Amiga community access to low-cost, good and widely-available PCI cards.

As a starter, we have included some drivers in the initial pack of the Mediator busboard:

PCI Graphic cards: Voodoo5 5500 64MB, Voodoo4 4500 32MB, Voodoo3 3000 16MB, Voodoo3 2000 16MB, Voodoo Banshee 16 MB, S3 ViRGE 86C325 2MB, S3 ViRGE 86C325 4MB, S3 ViRGE/DX 86C375 2MB, S3 ViRGE/DX 86C375 4MB

PCI Ethernet cards: Winbond 89C940F, RealTek RTL-8029, NetVin NV5000S.C., Holtek HT80232, Holtek HT80229, Compex RL2000, SureCom NE34, KTI ET32P2, Via 86C926.

These drivers have never been free. Their price was included in the original design costs.

New drivers have to be calculated separately because...

2. No commercial software is free

Writing good and versatile software (e.g. Mediator drivers) requires time and effort, which ultimately means programmers have to receive good salaries. If users want to be supported in the long run by any company, they have to pay for its products. Money collected allows generating new ideas, new designs and new products.

3. Free alternative approach (which we do NOT follow)

Yes, we could offer software for free. We could have bought hundreds of old-fashioned PCI sound cards just a few Mark per piece (like e.g. SB Pro). Then we could write drivers to this specific batch of cards. Easy way, supporting one chipset, one specific card, branded with our name and marketed as unique. As these cards would be unique, they would have to priced high enough, say at DM 100. With "free" drivers, of course.

What's the result? You would buy an OUTDATED low-featured no-longer-supported card, paying mega-bucks not for the card but for quick software and huge extra profits for the "manufacturer."

4. Instead we give...

RESPECT. The basic rule with Elbox is that we FIRST develop, design and test and only when everything is ready and in the final stage do we announce new products. In other words, we take the risk and full cost of the designing stage. We do not demand from users making pre-payments, placing pre-orders, etc. In other words, we respect the users as full-scale Customers, who deserve to be offered a final-stage product to choose whether to take it or not, depending on their needs.

Another basic rule for us is that we prepare universal drivers, i.e. drivers supporting various chipsets. This ensures faulty-free support for many different versions of the same card. Writing software with this prerequisite in mind takes much more time and tests than writing drivers for one specific chipset/card. But what we offer is UNIVERSALITY and PERFORMANCE.

Editorial:
As the system of Alfred Sturm, who's responsible for the Aminet uploads here at amiga-news.de, has been infected yesterday with this aggressive virus through installing LibBase310.lha and trying it there'll be no updates of the Aminet uploads in the near future.

The virus has unfortunately not only infected his main partition but also the partition with his backup. Some infected files are even not deleteable. He's now forced to install his system from scratch. This may take a while as laboriously self written scripts have passed away and everything has to be collected together again. Digital Almanac III - update announcement and news
There are some news on the popular astronomy program Digital Almanac III: in the next time (very vague - summer holidays, vacation!) there'll be a new update. Due to the many new features it will become version 4.0. Here is an overview of the most important changes.

Bugfixes:
  • moon shadow on Earth at eclipse was slightly wrong since last version
  • drawing of parabola-like orbits was corrected
  • error in PHA check corrected
  • positions of Martian moons corrected (wrong reference level)
  • improved position calculation of the Galilean Moons (very exact over a long course of time)
New features:
  • new moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune (!) and Pluto (!)
  • partially renewed calculation kernel
  • more maps of Mars, Venus and the Galilean Moons
  • filtering functions for planets/moons, deep sky objects and constellations. They allow to set drawing parameters for each single object or groups of objects
  • reworked textures
  • telescope can be controlled now also with numeric pad in the main and telescope window
  • import of comet orbit data directly from the internet!
  • for future versions there's now an automated update from the internet available. The annoying Shell command line procedure is history.
  • Online information from the internet on planets/moons, Messier objects and constellations (through OpenURL).
Because of the many changes the update archive will be several MByte in size. Alternately the update can be ordered for a small contribution towards expenses directly from Achim Stegemann. The CD contains not only the update but also big textures as well as numerous new pictures for your image collection.

More news:
Currently an OpenGL output (through StormMesa and Warp3D) is being worked on. This is purely experimental though, and it is not certain whether Achim Stegemann will have the time to complete it.
A GL version would speed up the graphics output, especially textures, considerably. (ps) (Translation: rh)

ELBOX Computer

ELBOX: Sound & TV in Mediator PCI
ELBOX Computer released sound and TV board drivers for the Mediator PCI board on a CD named 'Mediator Multimedia CD'.

Some details:

This CD has been prepared to provide you with the selection of drivers for PCI sound cards, TV tuner cards and graphic cards for Mediator PCI busboards for Amiga 4000, Amiga 3000 and Amiga 1200 computers.

The basic features of the Sound, TV & Graphic drivers:
  • The AHI-standard drivers for music cards to provide support for Sound Blaster PCI128 cards based on ES1371, ES1373, CT5880 and EV1938 chipsets.
  • The Sound Blaster PCI128 card makes use of the PCI bus in the Mediator busboard as the busmaster performing DMA operations to/from the external memory.
  • With 8- and 16-bit mono and stereo playback and 16-bit stereo recording plus user-selectable sampling rates from 5kHz to 48kHz, the Sound Blaster PCI128 produces precise audio fidelity.
  • Possible connection of 2 or 4 (optional) speakers for an engulfing 3D-surround sound experience.
  • Two independent stereo DACs for simultaneous playbacking of two stereo PCM channels.
  • Mixer: All inputs can be mixed together. Simultaneous recording from all the inputs is possible. The volume and balance can be changed independently for each input and output.
TV tuner drivers:
  • Drivers for TV tuner cards provide support for tuner cards based on the Bt878 Video Decoder.
  • The TV screen is rendered in the graphic card screen in a user-scalable window (PIP).
  • The TV tuner cards make use of the PCI bus in the Mediator busboard as a busmaster performing DMA operations to the graphic card memory.
  • TV tuner card running in the Mediator PCI busboard does not enforce any extra load on the Amiga's processor at all.
  • When full-screen TV image is generated, data transfer over the PCI bus between the TV tuner card and the graphic card is executed at 44MB/s.
Graphic drivers:
  • Enhanced drivers for the Voodoo graphic card family.
  • In the case of Mediator PCI 1200, the package allows using the memory window jumper set to 8MB independently of the Mediator PCI 1200 busboard series.

Emulator: Today UAE-Jit celebrates 1. anniversary
Today Bernd 'Bernie' Meyer writes on c.s.a.m.:
I did not want to elapse the anniversary completely unnoticed...Today it is one year ago when I announced the very first, slow and rather hacked version of UAE-JIT on comp.sys.amiga.misc which additionally was very bugy. You can find the original posting on Google.

What a year...

Celebrating the day I have composed a site with Amithlon-benchmarks.

It is very interesting to compare the amounts of that time with the ones of today. Now the Celeron333 is a pure developing computer which works under the Celeron566 in the computer room via M-JPEG-Card as a video recorder and therefore I could unfortunately not use both computers for benchmarking...

Take the champagne, celebrate and a threefold hurrah for UAE-JIT...

Maarten Koopmans (REBOL-ML)

REBOL: Rugby 4 (Request Broker)
Maarten Koopmans and Ernie van der Meer have published the Requester Broker 'Rugby 4' for REBOL-System. With 'Rugby 4' you can send requests (messages) to other REBOL-processes which sends back a result (LDC: Lightweight Distributed Computing). The processes may run on a local computer or on a computer in the Internet. The communication can be done encoded. Compared with the last version the following things have changed:
  • Change: 'poll-for-result' removed. Instead of it there are 'result-available?' and 'get-result' (see documentation for further information).
  • Change: The Serialization was improved and works now noticeably better.
  • New: 'sexec' supports now the options '/oneway' and '/deferred'.
  • New: Rugby-servers support now generation of Stub-code which can be automatically imported of clients with 'get-rugby-service <url>'. Thus for all Rugby-service-functions which are available for <url> Wrapper-functions can be dedicated. Therefore it is possible you only have to write 'echo "lala"' instead of 'rexec [ echo "lala" ]'.
  • New: The main archive contains the source code of Rugby in the modul form.
  • New: Documentation (update of the Rebol Zine-article)

AdvoGraf: At full trottle into the grit
Michael Schumacher, the popular Ferrari race driver, queues to the squad of admonishers. He considers the domain michas-formel1-site.de, carried by Michael "Micha" Stanka, to violate his name rights.

AdvoGraf smugly wrote: "At first the questions is, which part of name is to be violated, cause "Michael" rather is a collective term for male Germans than an individual identity feature - and to call someone Michael "Micha" neither is much inventive nor seldom. And that the Ferrari pilot has "Formel 1" for his second (first) name at least was hidden from the author, up to now."

Publication of data of the game BATTLE
Marco Frischkorn writes:
After considering the issue I have decided to publish a part of the data and of the texts of the suspended game BATTLE. Originally the texts of "The great NewsPaper" should be complemented each week to bypass the time until the game has published. Furthermore it was meant as a introducing story.

The story itself represents a small part of the things which you had experienced in the introduction and later in the game itself. Should I meet my former graphicer then I will try to get some Whiteboards for the introsequences.

Furthermore there is a small choice of graphics of the game respectivly of its parts. You can also find screenshots of one or another tool. As soon as I will find a little bit more time I will also add some comments to the most important pictures.

If anybody should ask for the source code...NO WAY!

And now have fun with the things you can find here! (ps) (Translation: dr)

Programming: Tutorials for BlitzBasic
Blitz Coder is a new website dealing with the Basic dialect 'BlitzBasic' among other things is suited for programming of games.

Currently several tutorials are on this site, which first induct you into programming in general and then address programming of games.

'Blitz Basic' initially was released for the Amiga and now is available for Windows, too, but at least the general tutorials might be useful as an entrance to 'Blizt Basic' programming using one of the elder Amiga versions. (sd) (Translation: mj)

AmigaDE: Game - drillbohrer V5.04.27
On 09. Agust 2001 Timm S. Müller has released version v5.04.27 of the Arcade game 'drillbohrer' for the AmigaDE SDK.

'drillbohrer' is a 'oils well' clone, which was released for the C64 in 1983.

The game was written regarding AMIGA's PDA specifications, e.g. the game's window was limited to a PDA specific size.

This version offers additional music and sound effects. It requires the 'libknpmod sound library'.

The VP assembler source code is part of the archive.

Stefan Instinske (email)

Event: Maxpo 2001 cancelled
We got yesterday evening information by Stefan Instinske via mail that the Maxpo 2001 is cancelled. As already reported Falke-Media wanted to hold the "AMIGA WORLD 2001" at this fair. Talks with Falke-Media showed that they work with high pressure on finding an alternative location for the Amiga fair. Detailed information about this can be found at the beginning of next week at amiga-messe.de.

Here's the complete mail of Stefan Instinske (translated from German):

++++
| 22:56 | Friday - 10. August 2001 |
What was already in several forums broadcasted as rumor seems now to be official: the Maxpo 2001 in Cologne won't take place this year. Though the organizers have not officially commented on their webseite yet it seems definitely that all exhibitors have been written to and informed about the fair's cancellation. Not least the following message from Arktis makes clear that this year's exhibition falls through:

»As the MAXPO in Cologne unexpectedly won't take place this year ARKTIS holds on the 21. and 22. September a big MAC DAY in the ARKTIS company building in Rosendahl. Detailed information about participiants and supporting programme will follow soon...«

Reason for the cancellation of the fair may well be the withdrawings of some big exhibitors and financial losses resulting from this for the organizers. As soon as we have further and more definitive information we will announce them here of course.
++++

Amiga Inc.

Amiga Inc.: Merlancia buys Amiga Walker and MCC designs
Merlancia Industries is pleased to announce the purchase of the legendary Amiga Walker and MCC designs.

The Walker and MCC designs (created by Frogdesign and Pentagram respectively) are now owned exclusively by Merlancia Industries. These designs will be implemented in Merlancia's MMC/Torro line of multimedia PowerPC products.

The Walker case, designed in 1995-6 by Frogdesign for Escom AG will be implemented in a Space Conservative Desktop unit; expressly useful for offices and cramped desks. The Walker design, currently Merlancia Radian, will feature a PowerPC G3 or G4 (750 and 7410 resp.) processor with an advanced graphics chipset and will be targeted for sale around the $1500 to $2000 price point.

The MCC case, designed in 1999 by Pentagram was planned as Amiga's Multimedia Convergence Console. Merlancia will be implementing this design for its Apocalypse DT and ST series systems, based on the PowerPC 7xx and 8xxx series processors. The MCC design will be implemented in set top box and low cost desktop packages based on the X-Casting Broadband Video delivery method next year for prices ranging between $699 and $1299.

Dr. Ryan E. A. Czerwinski, CEO of Merlancia Industries comments "We anticipate minor styling changes and modifications, as needed for the implementation of our hardware, none of which will effect the beauty or harmony of the case designs. We will be producing the cases out of stainless steel, with the possibility of other materials being available as well."

Bill McEwen, President & CEO of Amiga, Inc said "As Amiga has transformed itself to a Software company, having Merlancia build new products based on these designs is exciting, and we look forward to seeing more great products from the Merlancia team".

Game: Heretic II patch (especially weaker Amigas will benefit from this)
Hyperion Entertainment released a patch for Heretic II for download. Especially weaker Amigas will benefit from this one; BilzzardPPC users with 040/25 CPU will experience significant more speed. Moreover now the so called "wheel mouse" is supported and visual effects have been enhanced.

The innovations are:
  • Speed. The new version is up to 25% faster depending on the hardware. Especially users with relatively weak hardware (BlizzardPPC with 040/25) will notice a significant speed-up.
  • Mouse Wheel support. Heretic II now supports mouse wheel adaptors that map to rawkeys 122/123 (newMouse etc.).
  • Improved visual effects: "new" Permedia 2 additive blending mode (requires Warp 3D V4.2) (see before and after screenshots) and full Voodoo 3 support.

Project: AmigaFFE status
I would like to give a short update of the topical status of the AmigaFFE-project. Due to the fact that the release of the source code of Frontier-First Encounters (quotation: "..when it's done.") I would like to suggest a small project that deals with Frontier, too.

Maybe some of you know the game "Elite - The New Kind". It is a Elite version, that looks slightly better then the original Amiga version. The Allegro-library (used for the new version of First Encounters, too) is used for the programming of this game (for Windows). Here is my question: Is out there any interest in a port of this game (for practice)?

Furthermore, I get an email containing the info that Alive Mediasoft already had a running version of First Encounters that was never finished. Does someone out there have any contact information (e-mail, snailmail) of one or more former employee of Alive? Because I would like to ask them if we could finish this version.

Additionally:
The analysis of the actual situation will be seperated in two parts:
  1. Technical information concerning the game (shortkeys, engine, and so on)
  2. Some kind list about what we can do and what we can not concerning the port.
In the near future I will put some impressions for example pictures on my page. I will publish the soundtrack (MIDI and maybe MP2 version, too.

If you did not hear anything about the AmigaFFE-project here are some information: The AmigaFFE-project wants to port the game Frontier First Encounters, the successor of Frontier Elite II, to the Amiga.

This is an "Everyone's Invited"-project. That means that everyone is welcomed to join the team wether he/she wants to program or 'just' write the documentation. Further details are available at the title link. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Developer tool: CVS V1.11.1p1
Version 1.11.1p1 of the AmigaOS port of 'CVS' has been released. This update among other things fixes another Enforcer hit, which occurred along with an error message when using the internal SSH client.

Beside of this bugfix two more new features have been added to simplify working with cvs and ssh a bit or to make it more compatible with the prior version.

Jens Langner advises any developer to get the latest version at the following and well known address: http://amcvs.light-speed.de/.

During the following days this update should be on Aminet, too. (sd) (Translation: mj)

Website: Amiga University updated
OK. We've done quite a bit of work since the last update, and while that was too long ago (mid May, blame too much work travel! :) we've got some cool stuff up there now for you!

1) New Pages. Not only have we gone back and re-verified links throughout the site (we are up to ~2,000 links, probably only about 15% of those are 'within site') we have added new AmigaDE, Draco, and TVPaint pages as well as a huge slew of REBOL links to the 'rebol on the web' page in our programming section. There are many other new links throughout the site in its various sections as well, please let us know if we missed *your* site. If it has to do with Amigas and especially learning how to use them, enjoy them, etc., we're all ears. :)

2) Site Mirrors and Archives. We are pleased to announce that thanks to Bob Maple, Paul R. Santa-Maria and Marc Albrecht we have been able to 'preserve' three Amiga sites otherwise having been taken down, namely 'Zip Drives and the Amiga', 'Motorola 68000 Resources' and the former Amiga-software.com website. Take a look from the 'site archives' link off the home page.

Even cooler is the generosity of David McMinn, who is allowing us to mirror his 'Blitz Basic 2000' site. This is still an active and growing site, even though at the moment he's changing servers on the home site in the UK, thus not all his content is online at the moment but that will soon change. Check it out!

3) Downloads. As you may or may not already know, we've had Bars & Pipes available for download for a long time, probably almost a year now. But we are pleased to announce that due to the generosity of NewTek, (who released Amiga TVPaint a while back as freeware), TVPaint is also now free to be distributed by other sites as well. We have created a ~4MB zip archive containing all you'll need to install this premier Amiga paint package (you'll need UnZip from Aminet as well as a graphics card, however, to use TVPaint - UAE/Amiga Forever users can also use it because they employ Picasso96 within the emulation). To help thank NewTek for their continued support of the Amiga community, if you use a PC, buy a copy of Aura, their newest and incredibly powerful paint/graphics package - you won't be disappointed.

In sum, come on back and check us out, we've got lots to offer and hopefully will have another large site update next month to announce. In the meantime, enjoy! (sd)

The vague information one gets from Amiga Inc. don't allow a continuation of the story about Amithlon and the forces of darkness for the moment. But surely later :)

But as I was asked to write something, now for something completely different. Though not very Amiga related it fits somehow the present situation.

For some months now the domain amiga-center.de lies fallow. I don't need it anymore, and I'm now looking for a new non-commercial user. A permission for such a non-commercial use was given by Amiga Inc. but would have to be renewed with a change of the owner and the service.

I give the domain away for free. The costs resulting from a change may be taken over by the new owner. When interested please send an email to Thomas Hoppe.

For now the domain is looked after by DomainFactory. A change is no problem but needs a little more time at DomainFactory. (ps) (Translation: wk)

AmigArt / Christoph Meier (ANF)

Alan Redhouse (Eyetech UK) comments AmigaOne, OS4-PPC and Amithlon
»Well apart from unduly cluttering up the AmigaOne mailing list I think Gary has handled the points raised admirably. Of course a large proportion of posters appear to have completely ignored his answers and have started indulging in even greater realms of virtual computing fantasy. I dont really see it as a particularly good use of my time or the lists bandwith to comment until the party atmosphere has died down a little.

However, since you ask, this is how I see things, (having first discussed it with Bill, Fleecy & Gary):

There are currently 4 Amiga-on-PC emulators in existence/under development.: UAE (Linux/windows); Amiga Forever; Amithlon; and 'x' (as previewed in AmigaActive but shortly to be released).

All use the same basic 68K emulation process, but have different trade-offs in terms of speed, chipset emulation (and therefore compatibility), windows integration and other features. All only run 68K (not PPC) code so cannot run modern software with PPC code.

All can only run os3.x (for which development has been capped) and will not be able to run any version of OS4.x , all of which are PPC coded. All will be irrelevant with OS5.0 (sometime) as this will run native on PPC and x86 (plus possibly some other) hardware.

From Amiga Inc's point of view all these products have a potential benefit in increasing the overall Amiga user base. The theory is that they will act as a taster to get old PC-owning Amigans excited again and to give ex Amiga (who are now PC) dealers a low cost way of re-evaluating the Amiga. The ultimate goal (in Amiga Inc's eyes) is to get more people to purchase/stock the new PPC-based Amigas.

I am personally unsure whether this will be successful as:

Virtually all new software will be written to OS4.x and PPC interfaces. Showing PC users an old unsupported operating system and its associated 68K applications does not - to me - seem the best way to impress them and get them to change platforms.

(As Ben Hermans from Hyperion says) these emulators will inevitably be installed on an existing windows machine where more functional - but mainly more familiar - productivity and games software already exists for these users.

I personally feel that we have the best chance of winning back old Amigans with an all new hardware (including case - details available in a couple of weeks), OS and application software bundle. That is we need a stand-alone fully functioning solution with sufficient native applications and performance to impress existing independant PC dealers. Of course this means that we need some of these new applications ready when os4.2 arrives and that means that we need sufficient sales of the AmigaOne with OS4.0 to make it financially attractive for software developers to port their games and applications. Careful timing is everything - we (Amigans) will only get one chance to get it right.

Contrary to what many may expect, I actually believe it would be helpful if OS 4.0 could be made to run on some of the existing PPC platforms (eg on the Cyberstorm PPC) - albeit at lower performance - to rapidly increase the OS4.0 user base that application developers can write for. As I understand it this would be possible but would need the cyberstormPPC's flash ROM to be updated and made available by its author (Ralph Schmidt I believe).

BTW I do think Bills statement at AmiWest that three products (AmigaOne, OS4.0, and Amithlon) are all to be launched simultaneously in November is a bit of orator's licence. As far as we are concerned we will be sticking to the (October) timetable for the AmigaOne and OS4.0 as announced in Rotterdam in June. Hope this helps.«

Emulator: UAE 0.8.17 (beta) released
Beta/Development versions of UAE will be available here, as soon as there are any changes to the code. The current stable versions are numbered 0.7.x, while the next beta versions of UAE will be numbered 0.8.x; and finally 0.9.0 once it's stable again. Previously, the idea was to have a stable version 0.x.0 and beta versions 0.x.y, for y > 0. That didn't work very well: all versions that appeared in public were rather stable, while the beta versions mostly remained in a private directory. We'll try a different model now and see how it works out. You can also check out the ChangeLog of the latest version here.

Stardate-BBS again out of business because of flash of lightning
Again is the Stardate during a strong storm affected by a flash of lightning. In the exchange my port only works for two hours then the Telekom has to reset the whole router. Again has expensive equipment to be exchanged. I was told that I shouldn't count on this until next week.

So the Stardate is again not accessible via the Internet. All Telnet points/ boxes please use the access numbers instead (you can find them e.g. here in the ALD). The http access of the mailbox isn't possible for now, either.

I should like to emphasize that this is (as was the last time) an act of God (struck by lightning). On my site of the Telekom all pieces of equipment are secured and there is backup equipment for the case of emergency. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Programming language: Emperor V4.1
Emperor is an object oriented programming language enabling programming of applications both for the new AmigaOS 3.9 and for AmigaOS 2.0 in the easiest way. Standard GUI elements, windows, menus, requesters, ASL requesters, ReAction and GadTools gadgets are integrated just by mouse-clicks and can be programmed using macro functions and the integrated text editor.

The gadgets can communicate with each other by the so called interconnection maps implemented, without typing even one line of source code. Creating of locale catalogs and variables, implementing libraries, etc. is likewise easy.

Emperor has an easy to see though and user friendly ReAction interface and comes with an extended online manual in ".guide" format. Thus programming the new AmigaOS becomes child's play!

Emperor has the following features:
  • Direct visualising available for every element.
  • Generates C/C++- source code.
  • Integrated text editor
  • StormC connection via ARexx
  • Generates source code for AmigaOS 2.0, AmigaOS 3.9 or in mixed mode
  • Transparent layout
  • GIFTWARE
Characteristics of Emperor v4.1:
  • French catalog added (written by Olivier Martin - many thanks!).
  • Translation for prepared menus and gadgets added.
  • Attributes for text editor, speed-bar, and space-gadget added.
  • New and specialized type of requester (Reaction style).
  • ARexx script changed / problems while project transfer fixed.
  • Fix positions for attribute window removed.
  • Problem with preview window fixed.
  • Array for speed-bar buttons added.
  • Problems with arrays fixed.
  • Adjustment fields extended with GadTools gadgets.
  • Configurable path to includes and libs.
  • Main window layout changed (no overlapping gadgets, anymore).
  • Requester added, if menu item "New" was chosen.
  • Error fixed in menu item "New".
  • Error fixed in menu item "Delete".
  • Selectable generation of macro functions.
  • Generated source code is considerably smaller by omitting unused macro functions (about 40 %).
  • Initially opened window for own project can be chosen.
  • Error fixed in source code when generated with one gadget only.
  • Specific project directory configurable.
  • Error fixed while opening old projects containing a slider.
  • Creation of locale files selectable.
  • Creation of Storm projects selectable.
  • Text editor now operates changes made correctly.
  • Saving of character lines containing a linefeed ('\n') is no problem, anymore.
  • amigaguide.library opened due to starting problems.
Version 4.1 of the program is available from Aminet "dev/c".

Tool: Amiga Filterium - extendable ripper and filetype tool
With the following message Andreas 'da Silva' Szabo introduces his new, flexible and extendable datatype processor and Ripper.

Short: flexible filetype processor and ripper
Uploader: silva@psi5.com
Author: silva@psi5.com (Andreas 'da Silva' Szabo)
Type: util/misc
Version: 1.1, 7/2001
Requires: - any amiga or uae
- filerequester library like asl, reqtools or arp
- optionally xfd/xpk/xad/xvs...
Distribution: NoCD

features overview:
  • knows, rips, converts a total value of about 400 game/demo scene related file types (about 100 self, others by accessing libraries)
  • find music, pictures, text and much more in memory, in files like demos/intros, packed files, etc
  • decrunch with XFD/XAD/XPK (all modes) recursively
  • convert mods back to Protracker (like Prowizard)
  • rip loaders and intros from boot loading games/demos
  • monitor files or memory as bitplane/hex/asc, mark ranges
  • decrypt data with eor
  • use your preferred file requester
  • check for viruses with XVS
  • highly configurable
  • interactive and automatically processing by script language

This introduces a _new_ standard of file type identification and ripper all in one. It works together with standard interfaces like shell (give arguments in command line), Workbench (set tooltypes), opus, arexx and appicon.

Highly configurable, for example: you can specify file type specific save directories and output filename extensions. Macros for custom processing methods can be defined.

It can invoke external programs, example: send the outputs to Multiview.

Amiga Filterium is based on plugins. Programmers can easily extend the power of this tool by writing more afilter-plugins. If you are interested:

The purpose of this release is to motivate YOU to try this out and maybe join to the development team as author of a plugin, beta tester or other. Its totally actual and maybe there was never something else like this. Lets get this chance! Lets make it top and standard!

Amiga Inc.: AmiWest Show Report
Amiga put online the announcements done on the AmiWest show in form of a report:

Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga Inc., made a number of exciting announcements at the AmiWest show in Sacramento, California. The AmiWest show is organized by the Sacramento Amiga Computer Club and is one of the largest Amiga shows on the West Coast.

The following products were announced for release by Q4, 2001.
  • AmigaOne PPC Computer
  • AmigaOS 4.0 PPC Operating System
  • Amiga x86 (x86 Amiga emulator)
  • AmigaDE 1.0 and Series Zero Game Pack

AmigaOne PPC Computer

The AmigaOne PPC computer, being built by Eyetech in the UK, is based on Zico specs published by Amiga Inc. Amiga Inc.'s flagship next generation desktop continues to advance towards the first real new hardware for the Amiga community in over 6 years. Excitement is mounting at both the Amiga office and around the world as Amigans realize that the long wait will soon be over. All partners in the AmigaOne and AmigaOS4.0 project have been working hard to meet deadlines as the project moves into its final stages.

Bill also announced that the two week slip in schedule for the Eyetech AmigaOne which had appeared in June had now been pulled back to just one week. The new Rev B boards are functioning well, with live PCI and AGP slots and work is now focused on bringing the board and the CPU cards together. The first week of August will see full system boards delivered to the AmigaOS4 team for preparations to move AmigaOS4.0 from the test bed machines.

For more details regarding the AmigaOne, see http://www.eyetech.co.uk/amigaone/ or http://www.amiga.com/products/one/.

AmigaOS 4.0 PPC Operating System

The AmigaOS 4.0 project is being managed by Amiga Inc. in partnership with both Haage-Partner (H&P) who are porting the main portions of the new PPC OS and Hyperion Software who are doing 3D and Mesa for the new PPC Operating System.

AmigaOS 4.0, which will only run on the Eyetech AmigaOne, is moving forward nicely. With the help of Amiga partners such as Matay, much of the development work has used a combination of A3/4000s, Matay Prometheus PCI bridge boards, Cyberstorm PPC Accelerators and H&P's StormC v4.

This has allowed the project to move forwards without having to wait for an actual AmigaOne board to become available. Consequently, the new file system and the core of the TCP/IP stack were completed over two weeks ago. The PPC 68K emulator is being fine-tuned and the new Amiga PCI library is being profiled against the Eyetech AmigaOne live PCI slots. The RTG system is being enhanced, with a full PPC implementation of the extended and most used functions, to allow for stunning 2D and 3D performance. In addition, the Voodoo 3 drivers have been completed and the G450 drivers are under development, to be followed by drivers for the new Matrox G550.

While the porting of the 68K elements of the AmigaOS will continue through AmigaOS4.2 and AmigaOS4.5, the first set of libraries ported to PPC will ensure that AmigaOS offers impressive increases in stability, functionality and speed.

Once the test bed to AmigaOne migration has been completed, Amiga will provide screenshots and benchmarks of the new system. These reports are aimed at demonstrating the superiority of the AmigaOne and will give the community an early look at the features of the product. In addition, Eyetech has commissioned some very impressive case designs that will give the AmigaOne the looks to go along with its brains.

Amiga x86

Amiga was able to demonstrate a prototype of an x86 emulator for 68K for the AmigaOS3.x series. This product, codenamed Amithlon, provides only RTG compatibility and is being targeted at providing a first step from x86 towards the AmigaOne. Amithlon is self-booting from CD on almost any x86 laptop or PC desktop. It is able to run most RTG programs at speeds beyond that of a standard Amiga 060 chipset. Several developers at the AmiWest show tried their applications on Amithlon and commented that they had never seen such fast run times before on a 68060 Amiga computer. Amithlon is being written by Harald Frank and Bernie Meyer.

Many Amigans who left when Commodore went bankrupt have been looking for a way to run their favorite Amiga applications on newer hardware. The purpose of the emulator is to allow x86 PC owners to experience the benefits of running the AmigaOS and applications without having to make a potentially risky purchase of an entire machine. Marketing and community will then slowly draw these people towards the superiority of an AmigaOne with a full native OS running on it, along with the latest applications. Amithlon is not a port of the AmigaOS and there are currently no plans to see the AmigaOS ported to x86.

More details of the Amithlon including feature lists and release dates will be published shortly.

AmigaDE 1.0 and Series Zero Game Pack

AmigaDE 1.0 (based on Elate/Intent by Tao Group) is being programmed by more than 30 programmers worldwide under the management of Amiga Inc. There are over 3000 developers currently signed up to produce content for various digital devices from cell phones, PDA’s, handhelds, and even desktop computers running AmigaDE 1.0. Amiga also announced the first set of games that is being released under the moniker “Series Zero” to Sharp for use on the Zaurus handheld devices. The 5 games that are being released as part of the Series Zero Game Pack are:

Batty by Titan Computers
Boxikon by e.p.i.c. interactive gmbh

Oliver Roberts (ANF)

WarpTIFF-introduction - New TIFF-picture datatype
Oliver Roberts introduces his new WarpTIFF freeware-datatype with the following message. This new datatype can also read pictures which were made under TIFF specifications 5.0 and 6.0. The datatype was optimized for 68k, WarpOS and native MorphOS and is of course very fast.

It follows the original message:

The first release of WarpTIFF is now available - a new freeware datatype capable of reading 5.0 and 6.0 TIFF spec images, available in optimized 68k, WarpOS and native MorphOS versions. Needless to say, WarpTIFF is fast - very fast in fact :) Full feature list below. WarpDTPrefs has also been updated to support WarpTIFF.

  • Supports 5.0 and 6.0 TIFF spec, including Packbits, Thunderscan, CCITT (fax), Pixar, LogLuv (CIE and SGILog) and Deflate (zip) encodings, and uncompressed files. LZW and JPEG encodings are currently unsupported
  • Image types supported include RGB (24-bit and 48-bit), palette based and greyscale (1-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit and 16-bit)
  • Supports image data organized as strips, tiles or separate components
  • Highly optimized datatype dispatch engine, and fast TIFF decoder, resulting in a very efficient, compact and quick TIFF datatype
  • Asynchronous file i/o and double buffering techniques (WarpOS only), which speeds up image decoding
  • Optimized versions for 68020, 030, 040 and 060
  • PowerPC support with native WarpOS and native MorphOS versions
  • Alter the pen allocation precision when images are remapped to an 8-bit display
  • Specific support for the OS 3.5/3.9 picture.datatype, when available
  • The dithering feature of the OS 3.5/3.9 picture.datatype can be configured to your liking (e.g. disabled for 15/16-bit displays)
  • Based on libtiff 3.5.6-beta and zlib 1.1.3

As some of you will know, WarpTIFF has been in development (on and off) for some time, but it's ready at last :) It already handles a more comprehensive coverage of various TIFF encodings than other TIFF datatypes, but if you should find some TIFF images that don't work properly with WarpTIFF, then please let me know and I'll try to add support for them. Likewise, if you need support for JPEG encoded TIFFs, let me know.

Richard H. Poser II (E-Mail)

Messenger: AmigAIM BETA Version 0.9429
Richard H. Poser has published betaversion 0.9429 of AIM-messenger AmigAIM. AmigAIM is a client for connecting with the America Online Instant-messenger (AIM-service). It follows an extract of the history of which you can recognize the changes which were made:

  • Custom interests can now be set and/or searched for by selecting <custom> and inputting into the resulting input box. (BTW: Setting AmigAIM would allow anybody using AmigAIM to search for others :-)
  • I think I fixed a problem that could occur if program is told to shutdown via the Close Gadget while a service/search is logging in.
  • Added an Online check capability, it can now check if a named interface is online and give an error if an attempt to go online is done and the interface is offline.

Virus Help Denmark: Installer of SMEG 2 Virus found
The installer of the new 'SMEG 2' linkvirus was found. It was found in the faked keyfiles of MiamiDLX but it is possibly included in other files. Now read the details:

»We have now found the installer of the new 'SMEG 2' linkvirus. If the info text from the archive is correct, the 'SMEG 2' virus has been around since February 2001.

The archive has only been on Elite BBS'es or Elite websites.

Jan Erik Olausen the programmer of VirusExecutor & xvs.library, has made a recog for the virus, but is having problems with removing the virus from memory. As soon as Jan has solved this virus, a new update of xvs.library will be released.

There is "NO" cure for this virus right now. But with the help of the program 'Safe v16.2', you can find infected files, but not remove the virus, you will have to replace the infected files with new clean files. This virus will infect everything that is executed. And on my test A1200 over 200 files, was infected in under 5 minutes.

The programmer of 'Safe' (Zbigniew Trzcionkowski) has written this about the new 'SMEG 2' virus:

Released probably by mistake. Non crypted version of the next one. Code is almost equal to old SMEG, but this time author invented NEW WAY of patching PRIVATE routine of device task. This routine handles receiving of dos packets.
Virus patch is stealing packets and sending them to the supervisor task called 'SMG'. I have never seen such advanced digging code that works properly. This means also that no visible changes are seen in the system beside one new task.
I have noticed that freezing of SMG task stops spreading of the virus, so at the moment Safe does only that. I will add removal of the 'magic' patches if I found it necessary.
File repair was as easy as Penetrator files - one move.l 4.w,a6 was replaced with jump to virus.

Hidden text (decoder was included, but not used by virus code):

Smeg! it's a Hostile TakeOver! (Again!)
And just when you thought it was safe..
Flake and Georg have left the building!
-= On Tour 1995-2001 =-

This is what we know of the virus:

Virus Type.... : Linkvirus
Virus name.... : SMEG 2a & SMEG 2b
Virus size.... : SMEG 2a: 1556 bytes & SMEG 2b: 1604 bytes
Archive name.. : MIAMIDLX.LZX
Archive size.. : 3.427 bytes (lzx packed)

There might just be more installers of the 'SMEG 2' virus out there, so do not install these fake-keys.

Thank to the person that send the archive to Jan Erik Olausen, and to Zbigniew Trzcionkowski for the first test of this virus.« (ps) (Translation: dr)

e.p.i.c. interactive: Status
Cartoon adventure The Feeble Files is now shipping for the Mac. If you want to find out more about green aliens, the Omnibrain and rebellions please turn to the projects section of our homepage.

Empire builder Knights and Merchants is now in final beta testing. The game is running properly with only a few bugs that need attention. We expect this game to be ready for release by the end of August. Watch out for the forthcoming demoversion of Knights&Merchants.

RPG/strategy mix Gorky 17 has, after many many frustrating setbacks with this project, entered beta stages on the Mac. We expect the game to be finished in September.

The release of Earth 2140 Mission Pack for both Mac and Amiga is scheduled for late august. The Mission Pack brings over 80 new missions to the original EARTH 2140 as well as 2 new buildings, 6 completely new units and one new terrain.

You will find more information on all our games in the projects section of these pages.

PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX: Comment about Amithlon development
Although I've only limited spare time available, I'm investigating the possibility of doing x86-native plugins for my software within the Amithlon-context.

Since diversification does not pay in the long term - especially given the limited time and the outdated current PPC platform for Amiga (200 MHz without l2-cache) those x86-developments may replace current PPC-support in my software completely. Support and testing for PPC, PPC/MorphOS and x86 would be too much.

Basically there's fewer people than ever ordering and registering software - this results in two considerations: first of all, it does not pay to buy a newer standalone PPC-machine, if it never will pay back. Secondly, if "no one else" is interested in this x86 stuff, it will be for my personal fun and needs, in case my 68k/PPC-Amiga once breaks apart. Amiga 68k/PPC-Software slowly goes hobbyist.

That were my 2 cents - I'd be all for an architectural elegant PPC architecture, but it did not happen in 6 years, and now it's too late in my personal opinion.

Nevertheless I've full sympathy for the MorphOS development and the other PPC-oriented approaches. But remember, I've been among the very first to support PPC on Amiga - but doing the same mistake again? No, not this time... (ps) (Translation: gf)
