Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
It's been a quiet end of April for the Amiga scene. That doesn't mean
nothing is happening, just that there weren't a lot of news releases.
However, even in a quiet month the Amiga community is always doing
something, so there are many things to read in this issue.
There are always things that have happened for which we don't have
press releases or posted stories. This month, a number of Amigans have
wondered what has happened to SoftLogik, publishers of the excellent
"PageStream" publishing package. As nearly as we can determine, the
company is in transition to a new location somewhere in Wisconsin. Who
knows, they might even wind up near "Amiga Update".
The following quote from the SoftLogik mailing list was sent along to
us:
"As reported online earlier, Soft-Logik is moving. The building in
St. Louis was closed February 24th, 1999. We expect to finalize the
purchase of the new location in Wisconsin on Tuesday, March 9th,
1999."
As we obtain information, we'll pass it along.
Meantime, please enjoy this latest issue.

Subject: IBrowse
Can't seem to find them. Their site is not available and this right
after they announce a new upcoming release. What do you think?
How many of us Amigans do you think are left out there?
Do you think they started too late developing the Amiga at Gateway or
is there still hope?
With the PC prices at all time lows, it seems almost ludicrous for
someone to dump thousands into a machine that is still using 10 year
old technology and software, speaking for myself, of course. Just got
through getting an A4KT up and running that has been sitting in my
office for 15 months. Talk about trying to get information, I still
haven't found the right 32 meg simm modules to plug into the card. I
have purchased 8 already. Ouch!!!!!
Kind regards
Ed
~~~~~~
Hello Ed,
The IBrowse web site has returned, though it could use some updating.
We'd certainly have a great loss if anything happened to Omnipresence.
Not sure of the answers to your other questions. There are more
Amigans than many might think, and in unusual places. Everyday I walk
into my "day job"'s building in one of the most powerful corporations
anywhere in the world and see the work of anonymous Amigas all around
me. Our headquarters building has large TV monitors scattered
throughout for announcements, corporate news and programs related to
our products. The system is Amiga based even though most people in the
IT organization have never heard of it. (Those who work near me have!)
As for Gateway, their innovative plans should be able to make up for
any late start. There's always room for a good product, especially in
a niche market. The key is to advertise, and know your market. If
anyone can handle that, Gateway can.
Finally, I can't help on the simm question, but I'll bet our readers
can!
Regards,
Brad
Joint Amiga Developers (JAD) have announced that they are now active,
and ready to begin the construction of an Internet-based development
system which will gather Amiga-developers from all over the world to
develop major applications.
This should be of interest to anyone who wants to see some more major
applications for the Amiga, as well as make sure that the next
generation of Amigas will have a solid base of applications to grow
with.
It is a theory which is yet untested. The success of this theory
depends on YOU!
Take a look at our homepage at: http://jad.amiga-software.com
Or mail us at: amiganetwork@usa.net
Please note that JAD is currently a non-profit organization, which
means that there is no money to earn from this. But if you just help a
little, you can make a difference too.
Voyager 3 Notes
===============
Ok, here's a short summary of what has been done, is being done and
(eventually) will be done for Voyager 3. This focusses on "major"
changes, and I've written it offhand, so I may have forgot something.
Document revision: 1, 16.4.99
Javascript
----------
Of course, the thing everyone wants (esspecially the ones asking for
"Java" :)
I've implemented the Javascript 1.2 core language with a nicely-done
bytecode interpreter. Voyager first compiles the code down into a
special P-Code (or "Bytecode", as it's nowadays called, although it
really consists of 16 bit instructions) which is then executed by a
special interpreter. This should give the fastest JS implementation
available in the industry, and should esspecially help with the
otherwise massive impact of event handler code or looping operations.
The Document Object Model I'm implementing is closely based on the
one of the Microsoft Internet Explorer, because it is much more
flexible than that of NS (that's what M$ calls "Dynamic HTML").
Status: mostly done, in testing stage, gathering real-world feedback
now
HTML
----
Numerous major and minor updates. Support for CSS 1 is being worked
on and will most likely be ready in time. Note that "Dynamic HTML" is
actually a JS-related issue.
Status: done, in testing stage, gathering real-world feedback now
GUI
---
Main GUI is now completely customziable with the well-known "coolbar"
technology borrowed from the Windows world. Bookmarks are replaced
with the new embedded version of the Contact Manager. New IE4-alike
history allows finding
Status: mostly done
Networking
----------
Cache system has been reworked to require less maintaince. Optional
"blacklisting" for image fetching based on URLs allows one to get rid
of banners and based tracking services. The same will probably be
added for cookies.
Status: mostly done
Java
----
The "Merapi" JavaVM seems to have died. Holger Kruse of Nordicglobal
recently announced the Daytona JavaVM, and has invited all browser
authors to participate in a design discussion about a potential plugin
API for Daytona. If this project has a future (and given hkr's track
record, it surely will), I'm definitvly going to support it.
Status: time will tell
Flash/Shockwave
---------------
David "Zapek" Gerber is working on integrating the free flash 3
player as an V plugin.
Status: being worked on. It's either finished in time or someone in
Switzerland will have his buttock prodded :^)
Image decoders
--------------
Updated to current versions of libjpeg and libpng. Speed improvements
in the rendering code, and will now also deal fine with CGFX4
in-buffer bitmaps. Fixed tons of low-memory issues. Modularized and
loaded on demand based on the system architecture for maximum
efficiency with easy upgrading to PPC. Special support for FBlit on
AGA systems to totally eliminate the need to use chipmem.
Status: done, in testing stage
Plugins
-------
Nothing really done yet, but the Flash player is being designed as an
plugin and will stirr up some required changes.
Status: erm
OS3.5 Details from AUGS User Group Meeting
Posted by Martin Heine in comp.sys.amiga.misc:
Here are some more details regarding OS 3.5 as revealed by
Haage&Partner at the AUGS-Meeting - as usual aimed as a piece of first
info in Germenglish until someone tells you all this in an official
statement in correct English. =)
Internet:
A special version of AWeb will be the Browser (like I said) and the
TCP/IP-stack will be Miami (unlike I said :-). Integrated
Network-support. The E-Mail-API and the simple E-Mail-Client will be
from the author of Voodoo and New York.
Workbench:
Regarding our topic "Moving of the Icons" was said that it wouldn't
be necessary anymore to use the Shift-Key when moving more than one
icon. An "Unselect" will be possible when more than one icon is
selected. All Preferences-Programs will get the new Reaction-surface.
The Submenus of the WB will be optimized for a better handling.
Icon Library:
When selecting, the icons will start to "glow"; when dragging them
they'll get semi-transparent. Via the "Info"-Option it will now also
be possible to set the process-priority. The current and the New Icons
will be supported. The AppIcons will now be able to be animated.
Reaction:
The Tool Reactor will enable software-authors to use the new
Reaction-surface with their own software. One of the highlights of
Reaction is the possibility to have a color-gradient in the background
of a window. Also bugs in the asl.library will be removed.
PowerPC:
WarpUp will be integrated in it's latest version. An important part
will be the Preferences-settings which will complement the
integration.
Installer:
The installer will be able to be opened on an own screen. This screen
can have a color-gradient (where did I see this before...)-: New will
be the possibility to go steps backward during installation.
Printers:
The printer-support will be redesigned completely, so that
24-bit-printing will be possible on the WB. CyberGraphX and Picasso96
will be supported. There will be only one Printer-Setting in the
future, which will also have a preview-window showing immediately the
changed settings.
Datatypes:
Reworked and improved, now also 24-bit-capable. New are datatypes for
AIFF, JPG and GIF. Complete rework of the Amigaguide-Datatype. The
documentation will be in HTML in German and English. Release date is
still August. First Beta-Tests will start in ca. 3 weeks. AmigaOS 3.5
will be delivered on CD-ROM for 99,50 DM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
B E T A T E S T E R S S O U G H T F O R O S 3 . 5
In May the beta testing phase for the new AmigaOS 3.5 starts.
To be considered as a beta-tester, you would have to match the
following criteria:
o Internet connection
o sufficient knowledge of the English language
o enough time for the testing
o PGP-key
o Amiga-System with the following minimum specifications: MC68020, 6
MB RAM, hard drive, CD-ROM-Drive, AGA Chipset or Graphics card, OS 3.1
ROMs
Every beta-tester will have to sign a contract, and is not allowed to
pass on any information or data, which he will be receiving during the
tests, to third parties.
Communication will only be through a closed mailing list, in the
English language.
Every beta-tester is expected to send in a report in regular
intervals.
Should you feel you are capable for this task, please fill out the
form at http://www.amiga.com. Application is only possible via the
Internet. Should Amiga accept you for testing, you will receive
confirmation from shortly. Amiga regrets it is most likely they will
not be able to take all those who are interested for beta-testing and
hope for the understanding of applicants.
World of Amiga '99 -it's going ahead!
PBA Events in association with AmigaSoc UK (http://uk.amigasoc.org)
are pleased to announce that the most eagerly awaited Amiga event on
everyone's calendar is going ahead. The show will be on the weekend of
24th and 25th July.
Many people have expressed the need to host the UK's premier Amiga
event at an alternative venue. Although the Novotel was selected for
reasons of tradition in the past, the time has come to break with
tradition and go for something new. This year, we'll be holding the
event in a prestigious Kensington venue which we're sure you'll agree
is a huge improvement over the Novotel!
In addition to the usual things people have come to expect from the
show, we are aiming to run a number of other events within the show.
These will be organised with the help of UK user groups, so you can
guarantee that the place will be brimming with Amiga experts with
brains just waiting to be picked!
* Games competitions: Amiga multi-player games are getting better all
the time. Now's your chance to play them with loads of other people...
and you might even win a prize!
* An Amiga cybercafe: If you're not on the Internet already, see how
easy it is to get your Amiga connected!
* Seminars: Following on from last year's hugely successful series of
seminars, we'll be getting leading Amiga people to make presentations
on various subjects (if you'd like to hold a seminar, get in touch
with Andrew Elia (E-Mail: andrew@uk.amigasoc.org) now)
* How-to sessions: If you're in any doubt as to the best way to go
about towering your A1200, or getting on the Internet, Amiga experts
from around the UK will show you how (if you've got any ideas for
potential workshops, then contact Andrew Elia (E-Mail:
andrew@uk.amigasoc.org)or use the forms soon to be available on our
website).
* Shareware registration: Your chance to register some top quality
Amiga software without all the hassle of sending money to far off
places.
* A user group hospitality area: Those that are members of registered
user groups can relax in a private and informal atmosphere while
getting the chance to hobnob with Amiga celebrities from around the
world.
* Stands for user groups: If you're not a member of a user group,
then you can come along and meet representatives from your nearest
group. On the other hand, if you're a user group and you'd like to
take the opportunity to recruit some more members, then the WOA show
is the perfect place to start. If your user group wants a piece of the
action, E-Mail Chris Livermore (E-Mail: chrisl@uk.amigasoc.org).
* The inimitable Annex: Get autographs and kisses from Amiga's own
pop group!
Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting things happening at the show
will be the launch of OS 3.5. All being well, this product should be
launched at the show and will be on sale. You won't get another chance
to try before you buy! Additionally, the next generation Amigas are
just around the corner, so you never know what else you might see!
The 1998 AAA awards (http://www.aaa-awards.org) will also be
presented at the show, so you can see first hand who will be
collecting this year's international award as well as the first ever
UK AAA award.
The official World Of Amiga website (http://www.worldofamiga.com) is
already on-line. All the latest news will be posted here. We are
currently in the process of updating it to include all the information
visitors to the show could possibly need, including details of hotels,
a map of the venue, our growing list of exhibitors, and any news
relating to the show as it becomes available to us. We also hope to
offer an on-line ticket ordering system courtesy of IMM Studios
(http://www.immstudios.com). If there's something else you feel we
should provide through the site then drop us an E-Mail
(andrew@uk.amigasoc.org)!
Be in no doubt, this show has got the full backing of Amiga.
Tickets will be priced at £7.50 for adults, and £5.00 for under 14s.
This year we will also be offering special rates for families. Two
adults and two children (under 14) enter for only £15.00!
Additionally, for people wishing to attend on both days of the show,
there will be a special booth on Saturday that will sell tickets to
existing ticket holders for Sunday's show for a mere £2.00 (£1.00 for
under 14s). There will also be a number of tempting door prizes.
Details will be made available on our website.
As far as exhibitors are concerned, we are aiming to provide a
competitive rate this year, and will also be offering special low-cost
tables to companies/organisations who are on a tight budget. In short,
we want to please everyone!
You won't want to miss it!
By Chris Seward
For Immediate Release
Amiga Information Online has now moved its web site to a registered
web domain in the UK. You can find this new site by visiting
www.aio.co.uk
The old site (www.amiga1.demon.co.uk/aio) will act as a forwarding
service to people who have the old address.
I hope you all try this new site and see the speed improvements it
brings. It is now also alot easier to remember and will of course
attract alot more readers.
The latest issue has just been released today (24.4.99) and is
already online for downloading. Our last issue featured an interview
with Petro Tyschtschenko which was very successful and is still online
to be read. You can download the latest issue (issue 23) from our site
by following the links online.
Now that we have a proper website the site will be used to let the
readers get more involved with the site instead of just using it as
the latest issue downloading point. Some of the new features online
include ALL the interviews to ever feature in AIO, all the latest
readers letters we receive online, a global Amiga survey soon to be
launched plus lots lots more like lists of all the product reviews we
have done with issues numbers and scores to make it easier to find the
issue with a review of something you want to know about.
I would like to thank some people who without, this registered site
would not be possible and people who have helped in the process of
getting to this stage. Firstly I'd like to thank all the editorial
team of AIO, past and present who have helped me bring a publication
to many readers all over the world. I would like to thank Chris Brown
for hosting the current site, even though he did slow on updates a bit
to the end and also to Andrew Crowe who created the web site which I
have hacked to bits and added various areas. I would like to thank
Conor Kerr who will be getting the registered domain for me and the
work he has done to bring it to life. Last but not least I would like
to give great thanks to the people who believed in AIO enough to
donate which without again we would not be seeing the domain today,
these great people are, Malcolm Harnden, Ian Urie, Stuart Walker,
Andrew Cashmore, Paul Steadman, Gerald Hobbs and Raynald Le Moing.
30 Apr 1999
From Andreas R. Kleinert:
Hi,
this is just a small press information on my PPC programs.
Recent tests have shown, that the latest versions of
nearly all of my PPC programs - including SView/PPC and
the akDatatypes - do perfectly work together with
Frank Wille's ppc.library emulation for WarpOS,
starting with V0.6b.
Unfortunately, WarpOS V4.0 only does include V0.6 - however,
the newest version always can be found on Frank's homepage
under http://home.owl.de/~frank/
Using the ppc.library emulation yet is the recommended
way of running my programs under WarpOS - although a few
programs/modules already do exist as WOS versions (which
mainly still are under development and not yet complete).
SView/PPC and the akDatatypes do offer preferences options
for switching between the two possible selections under
WOS: the emulation will be utilized when auto-detection
and the respective "ppclib emu" option are enabled.
As a matter of fact, the "ppc kernel controversy" now
is solved, at least regarding PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX products.
Thanks for listening.
on each of the 3 IDE ports). The Catweasel ZII requires a ZorroII
busboard to be present in the system.
We have also improved the IDE interface performance by including the
IDE-Fix 1200 adapter by Individual Computers. IDE-Fix 1200 allows for
the conenction of 4 IDE / ATAPI devices to the A1200, improves
performance and allows for compatibiltiy of ATAPI Zip drives and LS
120 Drives. You can increase the IDE Preformance with the IDE-Fix
Express allowing for transfer rates up to 5 MB/sec. and better
multitasking. IDE-Fix Express can easily be added to the IDE-Fix 1200
already part of the Genesis System.
-------------
We do feel it appropriate to respond to comparisons made of our
Genesis Towerhawk vs. the AlienBoxer.
It should be noted that we have dropped the Genesis Towerhawk from
our product line due to the confusion between it and our Odyssey PPC
system. In revamping our product line, we have moved to a
"Build-Your-Own" paridym letting users build their system exactly as
they'd like it. We have kept some pre-made systems for those that are
not familiar enough with the Amiga to build their own and systems that
are built as solutions.
Let us state that we think the idea of a new Amiga motherboard is a
great idea and long overdue and that we support this effort for their
development on this motherboard. We are even interested in adding a
system to our Genesis line that would be based on this motherboard and
will seriously consider that possiblity when we can get our hands on a
Boxer motherboard.
This has always been our company policy re. the Boxer board. Like
wise, it has been our policy to only adversise and market those
products that we can actually deliver. Using this as a basis, we are
designing systems using the A1200 as a motherboard. We think that this
offers some substantial advantages:
o PPC Standard on our systems, 060 and 030 downgrades as an option
o "No questions asked" compatibility
o complete expandibility and modularity - add on only those parts and
features you want
o access to a huge and growing amount of A1200 expansion products
o access to an established base of Zorro Card via our Zorro card
module
o access to new and exiting CPU options as them become available,
including the new G3 boards
o access to PCI boards that will be connected to G3 accelerators
o cost effective 24 Bit Graphics (8MB Permedia 2) with local bus to
CPU
o Video Toaster Flyer compatiblity via Video Slot and Zorro card
modules
o Amiga Magic Bundle included plus Personal Paint 7.1 and a full
suite of other applications
o OS 3.5 like features built into pre-installed OS including
NewIcons,
Internet Support, etc.
o all drivers for hardware pre-installed in OS
o huge amount of storage space - 6 x 5.25" bays, 4 x 3.5" bay, 1 x
2.5" bay
Regarding Price
Genesis Odyssey PPC II incl.
o 060 50Mhz and PPC 160Mhz (we'll soon have the 060 clocked at 66Mhz
soon)
o 16 MB, 3.2 GB HD, 40x CD
All this for $1699.95 US .. thats more speed and Hard Drive space
than the Alien Boxer.
To match the Boxer, we'd need to add a Zorro bus and a modem
o Zorro Bus - $210 US
o USRobitic v.90 Modem - $225 US
You'll see that this makes the price of the Odyssey PPC II system
more than the Alien Boxer at $1795 US, but you've got PPC, a larger
Hard Drive and Faster CD including ASIMCDFS software. And the modem is
a high quality USRobotics, basically the best you can buy! Also, there
is really no need for the Zorro Slot card as in this configuration it
is not being used for anything so lets take it out.
The Total Odyssey PPC II is now 1924.95. Just slightly more than the
Alien Boxer but with PPC, larger Hard Drive, a great modem and
everything else mentioned above.
We haven't even yet talked about our experience and expertise doing
systems. Your Genesis system comes backed up by Randomize, Inc. will
long experience with all the manufactures involved plus our one year
parts warrentee.
We're not saying that we have all the solutions and that the Alien
Boxer isn't appropriate in some situation, we simply suggest you
compare carefully.
Having said that, we are always open to system suggestions. Please
email us at sales@randomize.com with your suggestions, comments,
questions, and orders.
Andreas Kleinerts Presseinformation zu seinen PPC Programmen
Die letzten Tests haben gezeigt, daß nahezu alle Programme inklusive SView/PPC
und den akDatatypes problemlos mit Frank Willes ppc.library ab V0.6b
(Emulation für WarpOS) zusammenarbeiten. WarpOS V4.0 enthält zwar nur die
Version 0.6, aber die neuesten Versionen der ppc.library können Sie immer
unter http://home.owl.de/~frank/
finden. Lesen Sie die komplette Erklärung unten und besuchen Sie
die Homepage von Andreas Kleinert.
Subject: PPC information
Hi,
this is just a small press information on my PPC programs.
Recent tests have shown, that the latest versions of
nearly all of my PPC programs - including SView/PPC and
the akDatatypes - do perfectly work together with
Frank Wille's ppc.library emulation for WarpOS,
starting with V0.6b.
Unfortunately, WarpOS V4.0 only does include V0.6 - however,
the newest version always can be found on Frank's homepage
under http://home.owl.de/~frank/
Using the ppc.library emulation yet is the recommended
way of running my programs under WarpOS - although a few
programs/modules already do exist as WOS versions (which
mainly still are under development and not yet complete).
SView/PPC and the akDatatypes do offer preferences options
for switching between the two possible selections under
WOS: the emulation will be utilized when auto-detection
and the respective "ppclib emu" option are enabled.
As a matter of fact, the "ppc kernel controversy" now
is solved, at least regarding PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX products.
Thanks for listening.
The Amiga RC5 Team Effort ist durch PowerPC stärker geworden
Bereits 500 PPC-User helfen mit, bei
The Amiga RC5 Team Effort
den Code zu knacken! Jeder weitere User, der seinen Computer
für das Amiga-RC5-Team mitrechnen lassen möchte, ist willkommen.
Lesen Sie dazu auch die Pressemitteilung von Thomas Tavoly:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 29th 1999
The Amiga RC5 Team effort strengthened by PowerPC
As of today over 500 PowerPC equipped Amigas are participating in the
Amiga RC5 Team effort, or over one quarter of all Amigas participating.
This is a clear indication of where Amiga users go when they need more
power.
Combined with the announcements from Amiga Inc./International promising
PowerPC support in the upcoming update(s) to AmigaOS our path is clear: new
clients supporting WarpOS are already in development.
Naturally 68k users are not left out in the cold, a new 68k client with
a faster core is also being worked on. While this has run into some
difficulty due to a hardware failure, the situation is expected to be
remedied soon.
The RC5-64 effort is proceeding along well, the Amiga team is third largest
out of thousands (with over 1800 members and 3300 machines), and
consistently scores in the top five daily. We are currently ranked sixth
overall, and steadily moving towards the fifth spot. This gives the Amiga
some well deserved exposure, and hopefully in the coming months that will
only increase as Amiga is relaunched with an updated OS and major industry
support.
Future plans involve moving to open source development and more efforts,
starting with the addition of Optimal Golomb Rulers (or OGR) to the currently
running RC5-64 challenge, later anything you like on a plug-in basis. That
could entail anything from distributed rendering to research in the field
of diseases etc.
Everyone is cordially invited to join, with any kind of machine, though
one Amiga at least is appreciated. For a full explanation of what the
effort is about, where we are heading, how to participate and everything
from statistics to member listings, please visit the Amiga RC5 Team effort
homepage at http://distributed.amiga.org.
The Amiga RC5 Team effort is also providing a mailinglist as a forum for
the discussion on above topics and the effort in general.
Sincerely,
Amiga RC5 Team effort coordinator
A.C.T.-Umfrage wird am 20.05.99 auslaufen
Die Existenz der Umfrage von A.C.T. auf http://www.act-net.com/news.html
wurde den meisten Print- und Onlinemedien vor ausreichend langer Zeit
bekannt gegeben. Jede Umfrage muß eines Tages beendet werden -
Entscheidungen müssen fallen.
Projekte, die bis zum Stichtag nicht genügend Stimmen erhalten haben,
werden fallen gelassen. Sollte kein Projekt ausreichend Resonanz
erfahren und sollte Amiga Inc nach wie vor jeden Kontakt vermeiden, wird
A.C.T. ab Ende Mai 1999 keine Amiga Produkte mehr entwickeln,
unterstützen oder vertreiben.
Die existierenden Produkte stünden dann für dritte Parteien zum Kauf zur
Verfügung (Rechte-Übernahme).
Thomas Raukamp: Erklärung zur Übernahme der Fever
Wie schon vor einigen Tagen auf der Homepage der
Amiga Fever bekannt gegeben,
haben wir mit sofortiger Wirkung dieses Magazin übernommen. Beide
Zeitschriften sind mit sehr viel Engagement und Enthusiasmus in den Markt
gestartet. Umso schöner ist es also, daß durch die Integration der Fever
unter Leitung der amigaOS ein noch größerer Wirkungskreis erreicht wird und
wir unsere Position am Markt im Sinne aller Amiga-Fans weiter ausbauen
werden, um hier endgültig das tragende Medium dazustellen.
Abonnenten der Amiga Fever erhalten in diesen Tagen die amigaOS automatisch
per Post. Bitte haben Sie Verständnis dafür, daß die Abwicklung der Übernahme
der Abodaten einige Tage in Anspruch nehmen kann, schließlich wollen wir
vermeiden, daß die Leser, die bisher beide Magazine abonniert hatten, eine
Doppellieferung erhalten.
Sollten Sie weitere Fragen zu Ihrem Abo haben, schreiben Sie bitte an unseren
Abovertrieb abo@amigaos.de, für allgemeine
Fragen stehen wir unter unserer gewohnten eMail info@amigaos.de
für Sie bereit.
CD-Album 'uNDEFINABLE TUNEs'
Andre Lorbach schreibt:
Ich hab meine neues CD-ALBUM jetzt fertig. Es nennt sich "uNDEFINABLE TUNEs"
und beinhaltet hauptsächlich selbstgemachte Trance-, House- und Hardcore-tracks.
Alle Tracks sind ausschließlich auf dem AMIGA enstanden, und wurden mit
OctaMED Soundstudio abgemischt.
Auf meiner Homepage http://deltaray.webjump.com/
kann man sich von jedem Track einen Beispielsound runterladen,
und selbst urteilen ;-)!
Der Gewinner der Hypercom 4+ ist Frank Paries aus Hattingen :-)
Herzlichen Glückwunsch Frank! Frank hat den entscheidenden Klick um genau 8.41 Uhr
gemacht, hat einen Screenshot eingeschickt, der das dokumentiert und auf diesem Screenshot
stimmt auch die Klickzahl des rechten Zählers mit dem seinerzeitigen Wert überein.
Natürlich habe ich mich gefragt, wie es sein kann, daß insgesamt sieben
Leute Screenshot eingeschickt haben, aber auch dafür gibt es eine Erklärung:
WebHits hat eine Reloadsperre im Zähler eingebaut. Aus diesem Grund ist es möglich,
daß jemand, der innerhalb einer bestimmten Frist mehrmals auf der Seite war, einen
Zählerstand zu sehen bekommt, der von jemand anderem erzeugt wurde.
Pressemitteilung: DCE lizensiert Phase5-Produkte
Frankfurt, 27.04.1999
Gute Nachrichten für alle Amiga-Anwender, die ihrem Rechner zu mehr
Leistung verhelfen wollen: Die DCE GmbH aus Oberhausen, langjähriger Hersteller einer
umfangreichen Palette von Hardware-Zubehör für AMIGA Computersysteme, und phase 5 digital
products aus Oberursel, Entwickler und Hersteller leistungsstarker Prozessor-, Grafik- und SCSI-
Karten für AMIGA-Rechner, geben hiermit den Abschluß eines Lizenzvertrages bekannt,
der es der DCE GmbH ermöglicht, ab sofort eine Reihe von phase 5-Produkten, die aufgrund der Fokussierung
auf PPC-Upgrades aus dem Programm von phase 5 genommen wurden, unter Lizenz zu fertigen und
zu vertreiben. Es handelt sich dabei im einzelnen um die folgenden bekannten Produkte:
- Blizzard 1220/4
- Blizzard 1230-IV
- Blizzard 1240 T/ERC
- Blizzard 1260
- Blizzard SCSI-Kit IV für Blizzard 1230-IV, 1240 und 1260
- Blizzard 2040 und Blizzard 2060
- CyberVision64/3D sowie Scandoubler dazu
- Cyberstorm Mklll
Mit Abschluß dieser Lizenzvereinbarung wird die kontinuierliche
Verfügbarkeit der 68k-basierten
Prozessorkarten von phase 5 digital products, sowie der diversen o.g. Zubehörkarten, auf Dauer
gesichert; damit wollen die beiden Hersteller auch ein Zeichen des fortgesetzten Supports fur den
Amiga-Markt setzen. "Wir sind sehr froh, daß wir in der DCE GmbH einen Partner gefunden haben,
der die Produkte fortführt, die wir aufgrund unserer Fokussierung auf die PPC-Linie aus dem
Portfolio genommen haben, und der die technische Kompetenz sowie die langjährige Amiga-
Erfahrung mitbringt, die Produkte auf dem gewohnt hohen Qualitätsniveau zu fertigen, den
flächendeckenden Vertrieb zu gewährleisten und die Kunden optimal zufriedenzustellen" sagt
dazu Wolf Dietrich, Geschäftsführer von phase 5 digital products.
Thomas Dellert, Geschätsführer
der DCE GmbH, ergänzt: "Durch diese Kooperation können viele Anwender jetzt wieder die
leistungsstarken Produkte, die in den vergangenen Monaten nicht verfügbar werden, zu
attraktiven Preisen beziehen, und ihre bestehenden Systeme so optimal aufrüsten und Up-to-date
halten".
Die künftig von DCE unter Lizenz hergestellten Produkte sind im internationalen Testvergleich als
vielfache Testsieger prämiert, und repräsentieren auch heute noch eine führende 68k-
Beschleunigertechnologie für AMIGA 1200 und 3000/4000 sowie kompatible Systeme.
Meeting mit Jim Collas
Gestern fand in Frankfurt ein Meeting zwischen Jim Collas und Händlern,
Entwicklern, Presse und Usergruppen statt. Jim Collas stellte sich
der Amigaszene vor, informierte die Anwesenden ausführlich über die
Strategie und Pläne zur Realisierung des AmigaNG, stand allen Rede und
Antwort und konnte sich gleichzeitig ein Bild von der Szene in Deutschland machen.
Er hat Anregungen und Vorschläge aufmerksam verfolgt und ist intensiv
auf Statements einzelner eingegangen.
Ich habe Jim Collas als einen Mann erlebt, der sehr charismatisch ist
und wirklich in der Lage ist, etwas zu bewegen. In seiner langen
Rede spürte ich, daß er vom "Spirit of Amiga" 'infiziert' ist.
Mit KnowHow und Power geht er an die Verwirklichung seiner terminlich festgelegten
Ziele, die klar strukturiert, aber auch revolutionär sind.
Ein Mann mit Visionen, Weitblick und vor allem Kompetenz.
Ich hatte nach all den vielen Versprechungen der letzten Jahre das erste Mal
das Gefühl, nun passiert wirklich was, es kommt Bewegung in den fast zum
Stillstand gekommenen Zug Amiga. Ich glaube nicht zu übertreiben, wenn
ich sage, daß wir uns auf eine phantastische Amiga-Zukunft freuen
können.
Amiga Fever wird in die amigaOS integriert
+++ AMIGA-aktuell-Special +++
Amiga Fever wird in die amigaOS integriert. Hier noch das offizielle Statement von Malte Mundt auf der Amiga Fever Website:
Im Schlusswort von AMIGA aktuell 12/98 haben wir gewarnt, dass die
scheinbar wieder stabilisierte Situation des Amiga-Zeitschriftenmarktes
nicht unbedingt von langer Dauer sein muss. Jetzt scheint sich dies zu
bewahrheiten:
Amiga Fever wird in die amigaOS integriert (27.04.99)
»Lieber Amiga Fever-Leser!
Im November 1998 gingen wir mit unserem neuen Magazin an den Start.
Unsere Zielsetzung war klar: Eine neue Amiga-Zeitschrift sollte den
muede gewordenen Markt beleben. Mit aktuellen News, objektiven Tests
und lesenswerten Berichten konnten wir von Anfang an unsere Leser
begeistern.
Zeitgleich mit der Amiga Fever hatte man beim Falke-Verlag ebenfalls
die Zeichen der Zeit und die Notwendigkeit fuer ein neues
Amiga-Magazin erkannt und so entstand die amigaOS, die sich
ebenfalls immer groesserer Beliebtheit erfreut hat, seit sie erschienen
ist.
Seit dem wurde viel Arbeit doppelt geleistet: Soft- und Hardware wurde
hier und dort getestet, beide Hefte mussten layoutet, dann gedruckt und
schliesslich ueber den Vertrieb in den Handel gebracht werden. Deshalb
ist jetzt der Zeitpunkt gekommen, zusammen fuer unsere gemeinsamen
Ziele einzutreten. Unter der professionellen Leitung des Falke-Verlags
integrieren wir die Amiga Fever in die amigaOS.
So ist es moeglich, eine bessere Marktposition einzunehmen und
effizienter fuer den Amiga und seine User einzutreten. Ich bin mir sicher,
dass wir damit die beste Loesung fuer eine gesicherte Zukunft im
Amiga-Zeitschriftenmarkt gewaehlt haben.
Ihr
Malte Mundt
Chefredakteur
Ortsgespräche vermutlich bald gratis
Telefonkunden werden für Ortsgespräche bald nichts mehr bezahlen müssen.
Davon geht die Mehrheit der lokalen Telefongesellschaften in Deutschland aus.
Ein Jahr nach Marktöffnung hat die Münchner Unternehmensberatung
Mc Loughlin Associates die deutschen City-Carrier nach ihrer Einschätzung des
Marktes befragt. Demnach rechnen mehr als 60 Prozent der lokalen Telefongesellschaften
mit der Einführung kostenloser Ortsgespräche in Deutschland. 35 Prozent
unter ihnen gehen sogar davon aus, daß es Gratistelefonate schon binnen eines
Jahres geben wird. Damit deutet sich endlich die lang erwartete Wende im Ortsbereich an,
nachdem die Telekom lange vor der Liberalisierung eine bis zu 150prozentige
Preiserhöhung im Ortsbereich verfügt hatte. Kompletter Artikel Link oben.
KOSH summary Nr. 17
KOSH [Kommunity Orientated Software Hardware]
Weekly Summary
Week Commencing: 17th April 1999
Number: 017
Mailing List: kosh-general
In the mailing list this week, the following items were discussed. Please do
not email the scribe regarding any of these topics, it is not his job to answer
these questions but merely to report the topics of conversation. If you have
any queries about this summary, please email ben@kosh.net, stating the Summary
Number, and Mailing List Name, and he will try to answer your queries.
a)
Subject: Eye tracking cameras
Summary of debate: It would be forward thinking of KOSH to support eye tracking
cameras natively, rather than as an added kludge to certain
existing systems.
See: http://www.visioncs.com/ re: a commercial gaze tracker.
It was suggested that on screen a mouse pointer could still
be required so that you would know where you are looking at.
However, such a system may not work as if the cursor isn't
always exactly where you're looking, you'd start to follow
it with your eyes and create a runaway feedback loop.
Bite-on switches or ear muscle tension systems were offered
as an alternative to blinking to select icons on a screen,
as the eyes must blink naturally and this could cause
confusion.
It was stated that brainwave reading is progressing fast, a
"click" can already be read. This yet again shows that there
are many alternative ways to controlling input to a
computer.
Could the Artificial Muscle Research Institute help with the
realization of haptic display gloves? The idea suggested was
for a shoulder length glove that allowed the user to feel
virtual holographic objects, push them around, sculpt
computer graphics like clay and have a virtual keyboard.
See the AMRIs URL at: http://www.unm.edu/~amri/index.html
(Scribe's note: I've decided to take the liberty of
mentioning directly here for people who may only read the
summaries and not the whole General ML that all of the above
does not mean the end of the computer mouse - if you want to
use one with KOSH it will of course be perfectly possible to
do so).
b)
Subject: KOSH design standards
Summary of debate: It was stated and restated that design standards for KOSH
are to be open - viewable and usable by all.
It was asked what common standards are people going to have
to adhere to in designing items for KOSH?
Joel Newkirk resuggested a "Standards Working Group".
Suggested standards to determine initially were
communications, media and hardware. For these APIs will be
needed.
A generic image class could be developed and then formats
like GIF, PNG, BMP, IFF/ILBM etc fall out as subclasses -
perhaps with restrictions which may need thinking about.
Suggested five basic types of standards (Sound, Image,
Movie, Text, Settings) could possibly make up most normal
formats needed. Further, could we make a quick
design/requirement of these five?
It was commented that would these types hold up in current
usage? For example, the whole of a magazine could be one
file - including bitmaps, structured images, fonts, masks,
text layout etc. The large structure is on top of the
individual elements, but all the parts are functionally
linked and not just separate items.
The method of transmitting the instructions for creating
data needs to be considered. The example given was that of a
MIDI file which requires an interpreter with local knowledge
as opposed to a a WAV which contains the data itself.
Suitable low level objects might be n-dimensional arrays of
integers. At the next level up, these might be labelled as
representing sound samples, stock market trends, bitmaps or
GUI windows etc.
c)
Subject KOSH Hybrids
Summary of debate: Perhaps it could be possible to combine object types to
make hybrids, eg: image + sound = movie.
An image can be flat 2D, a 3D array or X by Y by RGB; a
multilayered Photoshop/ArtEffect projects or many other
occurrences. A database is equally complex - with this is
mind the "hybrid" is the norm.
Would the IFF list of forms be of any help for the hybrids?
It was then stated by the original proposer of hybrids that
perhaps it would be better to make (for example) a Movie
basic class and then let it use the Sound and Image basic
classes.
d)
Subject: Small tools for KOSH and cross application compatibility
Summary of debate: Suggested that Unix like commands like WC should be
implemented in KOSH. Further by nature of the fact that KOSH
uses objects and not files, the wordprocessed object would
listen to wordprocessor methods when the wordprocessor loads
it. If it was made a subclass of "ASCII file" (or Unicode or
UTF-8 etc) you could process the ASCII representation
(or Unicode or UTF-8) in a KOSH version of "WC" or "Emacs".
e)
Subject: KOSH compatibility with the wider world
Summary of debate: There will definitely be some sort of "customs agent" for
this. This may well be complicated or perhaps there would be
several of them.
This would build an appropriate file object for any items
downloaded or loaded from hard media (floppy, CD etc). An
API as part of this would be a standardized place for things
like virus checkers to be added.
A browser could even be very simple. It needs a simple
display engine and the ability to interpret the web and
translate it into objects. These objects (those five
mentioned above and the specialised subclasses) then display
themselves. This would make "plug-ins" redundant as once a
class for that type of media was on a system it could
display or use it.
The Emulator Object could be a part of the chain of
subclasses from the base classes. This could save a lot of
special cases which would promote simplicity.
Suggested that the emulation could be split into common
parts and into the instruction sets of the processors in
question. To do this the emulation of, for example movie
formats, could be put into the movies chain of subclassing.
The emulation should be last in the chain and should scan
the different plug-ins (or equivalent) available and use
them.
f)
Subject: Designing KOSH APIs
Summary of debate: It was mentioned that APIs will be needed for a number of
things described above. KOSHans could work on these now as
it is not necessary to know the final binary form of an
object in order to work out the methods and data structures
that can optimally manage such a thing.
The design of a serial port was mentioned. See:
http://www.sei.cmu.edu, search for "product line
architecture" which goes into the question of what you can
have in common between designs (eg: sending and receiving
data) and what you need to vary for each special occasion
(eg: you can't do the same thing to the serial port as you
can to your USB port).
Suggested we establish some clearinghouse for API
recommendations - perhaps a working group could oversee
that.
g)
Subject: KOSH Object Manager
Summary of debate: Dave Haynie has said that he hope to get a paper on this
done by June or July. After this a prototypical
demonstration Object Manager can be hacked together.
Then we want the floodgates loosed and all of the pieces of
the OS to be developed.
h)
Subject: KOSH Driver factory
Summary of debate: It was proposed that a "driver factory" that could enable
its users to choose the appropriate "standard" class to work
from, and make various associations and connections quickly
and simply, and then write any necessary code to support
additions or modifications.
This would make developing for KOSH easier and thus hardware
developers would be more likely to develop for the system.
The "driver factory" could be part of a developer support
package or program.
i)
Subject: Furthering KOSH
Summary of debate: Fleecy Moss has suggested that we need to move to a more
concentrated stage in KOSH where we can proceed without
distraction. To this end he has suggested two things:
1) A formal documentation and version control system so we
can all work together in a remote environment,
2) KOSH will start as a formal specification of its
individual parts and its environment. Once the
specifications are out, anyone with a mind can produce the
individual pieces themselves. What is required is a formal
specification language to define the interfaces.
Fleecy further detailed other things that are required:
a) One of the things to be identified is the Basic Sea
Services Set, the minimal services provided by the cybersea
that are required for the sea to exist.
b) The services pages also contains a lot of other services.
A write up for each of them listing what we would like them
to do would be a first stage to moving forwards.
c) BOSS - Basic OS Services - this entity is the gateway
between the logical sea and the physical matrix beneath.
someone to have a go at defining the Basic OS Services
required by the sea.
d) A development strategy - perhaps this should be phased,
with the early phases seeing us implement KOSH as an
application.
The BOSS can be a thin server, mapping KOSH to an underlying
kernal, which is suggested as being POSIX compliant, running
on an x86 - this enables us to use Linux and all of its
tools and x86s, which are the dominant computer, and the one
most ppl have access to at this time.
Whilst KOSH is supposed to be hardware independent, the
implementation of a neutral distribution format will have to
wait until a later phase.
Suggested that were possible KOSH should be defined and
implemented using XML. We need more information and a
coherent plan, positives and negatives.
e) We can do KOSH correctly, in which it is logically
correct with full integrity, or we can tie it to hardware
considerations, for speed. Fleecy states that speed will
always increase, and he would rather get it right at the
beginning for the sake of speed rather than to hack and path
later on because we went for speed. Elegance through
simplicity, but elegance requires coherence and not
compromise.
j)
Subject: Questions on the future of KOSH
Summary of debate: The following important questions were raised:
How is the KOSH website coming along?
How is KOSH as a whole coming along?
To this end, which papers are written, how far have they
come, can they be reviewed?
Where can those who are doing nothing but writing to the
mailing lists help?
k)
Subject: Documentation and version control system
Summary of debate: Gabriel J. Hauber has volunteered to look at what has been
done so far in building the above and try to get it
completed in a reasonable time.
l)
Subject: Anyone know where Rudi is?
Summary of debate: If anyone has current contact details for Rudi please could
they post them to the General Mailing List.
m)
Subject: F-CPU
Summary of debate: An interesting project called F-CPU can be seen at:
http://f-cpu.tux.org/original/
n)
Subject: Query on the survey content
Summary of debate: The Surveying Working Group is unsure whether to ask people
whether alien file format support is desired or not. The
problem with asking is that (from a survey of the Surveying
WG it would seem!) half the people think it would worry
people that we looked like we weren't sure about it, while
the other half think it would reassure people that we were
thinking of it.
The Surveying WG does not want to just declare "we are
supporting alien file formats" as this should be left to a
survey. Therein lies the problem.
AmigaRA - Petition - Website wird ein Jahr alt
Die AmigaRA Website, die die
Petition zur Portierung des RealPlayers auf den Amiga startete, ist ein Jahr alt geworden.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Weitere Einzelheiten siehe offizielle Mitteilung:
Press release 25 April 1999
AmigaRA, the web site that hosts a petition to port RealPlayer
for the Amiga, is today one year old !
Happy birthday, but its time to do some historic :
* Real replied one year ago they had already too much problems
with the G2 player (unsolved problems yet, as the Linux G2
version isn't out even by now)
* AmigaRA didn't go into real work or heavy contacts with Real
now for two reasons :
a) We have to wait that Real releases all G2 version to start
asking them about porting it to the Amiga
b) We'll have to see first with Amiga Inc, they could maybe
help us on that matter
* The total of promised money is... US$ 31'904 !!!
Future :
In the next months, new mailing-lists will be started, one for
developers, and another one for users...
wARPgATe Website ist umgezogen
Und hier auch gleich noch eine News von der wARPgATe Seite: Shogo wird auf den Amiga portiert.
Hyperion hat heute bekannt gegeben, daß Shogo durch Digital Images auf Amiga portiert
wird. Shogo wird unter PPC mit WarpOS laufen. Einzelheiten unter
wARPgATE News.
Nachtrag 28.04.1999:
Hans-Jörg Frieden schreibt per eMail:
Ich war gerade auf deiner News-Page und habe den Hinweis auf unseren
Shogo-Port gesehen. Du schreibst, daß der Port von Digital Images
durchgeführt wird. Dies stimmt so nicht ganz.
Der Port wird von uns, also Hyperion, selbst durchgeführt. Digital
Images waren beim Einfädeln des Deals dabei, haben aber mit dem Port an
sich nichts zu tun.
Danke für die Info Hans-Jörg, das hatte ich in der Tat falsch
verstanden.
Was tut sich bei HyperCOM und VMC-ISDN?
Nach einem bösen Plattencrash und mehreren Wochen mühseliger Kleinarbeit,
konnten zumindest die aktuellen HyperCOM, und ein großer Teil der VMC-ISDN
Treiber gerettet werden. Für die HyperCOM Karten wird es in den nächsten
Tagen ein neues Update geben. Bei der VMC-ISDN Software werden derzeit einige der
fehlenden Teile komplett neu geschrieben und noch sehr ausgiebigen Tests unterzogen.
Dies bedeutet, daß es noch gut ein paar Wochen dauern kann, bis eine neue
Version ausgeliefert wird, und auch solange keine Registration der bisher angebotenen
VMC-ISDN Software durchgeführt werden kann.
Alle Kunden die VMC-ISDN schon bestellt haben, sind also nicht vergessen, oder
ignoriert, oder abgelehnt worden, sondern müssen sich nur noch ein wenig
länger Gedulden, bis wir wieder ausliefern können. Weitere Infos, auch
zum neuen Support-Forum, welches in den nächsten Tagen online gehen wird, finden
Sie unter obigen Link.
Identify v11.0,
ist eine system shared library, mit deren Hilfe kryptische Zahlencodes in eine von
Menschen lesbare Form umgesetzt wird. Die ursprüngliche Anwendung (durch die
bekannte expname.library) war die Decodierung der Hersteller- und Produkt-Codes von
Amiga-Erweiterungskarten. Mit der identify.library geht die expname.library jetzt
in die zweite Generation. Der Programmcode wurde völlig überarbeitet, optimiert,
verbessert und erweitert.
AIO mit neuer Website und Issue 23 ist fertig
AIO ist ab sofort unter http://www.aio.co.uk
zu erreichen. Unter 'Misc' können Sie Interviews und und Leserbriefe nun auch online
lesen. Weitere Einzelheiten in der offiziellen Mitteilung:
For Immediate Release: 24.4.99
Amiga Information Online has now moved its web site to a registered web
domain in the UK. You can find this new site by visiting www.aio.co.uk
The old site (www.amiga1.demon.co.uk/aio) will act as a forwarding
service to people who have the old address.
I hope you all try this new site and see the speed improvements it
brings. It is now also alot easier to remember and will of course attract
alot more readers.
The latest issue has just been released today (24.4.99) and is already
online for downloading. Our last issue featured an interview with
Petro Tyschtschenko which was very successful and is still online to
be read. You can download the latest issue (issue 23) from our site
by following the links online.
Now that we have a proper website the site will be used to let the
readers get more involved with the site instead of just using it as
the latest issue downloading point. Some of the new features online
include ALL the interviews to ever feature in AIO, all the latest
readers letters we receive online, a global Amiga survey soon to be
launched plus lots lots more like lists of all the product reviews
we have done with issues numbers and scores to make it easier to find
the issue with a review of something you want to know about.
I would like to thank some people who without, this registered site would
not be possible and people who have helped in the process of getting to
this stage. Firstly I'd like to thank all the editorial team of AIO, past
and present who have helped me bring a publication to many readers all
over the world. I would like to thank Chris Brown for hosting the current
site, even though he did slow on updates a bit to the end and also to
Andrew Crowe who created the web site which I have hacked to bits and
added various areas. I would like to thank Conor Kerr who will be getting
the registered domain for me and the work he has done to bring it to life.
Last but not least I would like to give great thanks to the people who
believed in AIO enough to donate which without again we would not be
seeing the domain today, these great people are, Malcolm Harnden, Ian
Urie, Stuart Walker, Andrew Cashmore, Paul Steadman, Gerald Hobbs and
Raynald Le Moing.
