Event: Eternity shows T.o.T. on ARC 2002
Eternity, the software
makers from Frechen, Germany, will show the online-strategy game Tales
of Tamar. This is not the hectic kind of game that's being played at
so-called LAN-Parties, but a more "grown-up" game. A central server
analyzes every player's moves that are sent via eMail once per day,
and sends back the results through eMail as well. More information

Different software updates (until 18.11.2002)
On the website of Dirk Stöcker there are now updates for the following Tools available:
Rekonet published new card sets for Klondike.
Michael Christoph released version 45.8 of ToolsMenu. In the file some catalogs are new. Download: ToolsMenu_V45.8.lha (97 KB)
Version 0.8.22R3 of the Amiga emulator WinUAE will soon be available. The following bugs were fixed in this release:
- Ports-tab crash fixed
- joystick handling fixes
- hard drive configuration save fixed
(trailing spaces are now removed from HD ID-string)
- fixed stuck keys when switching between WinUAE and Windows
- sprite fix (some games had flashing sprite garbage)
- thread priority tweaks
- setupapi.dll error when running under Windows 95 (not confirmed yet)

Multimedia authoring system: Screenshots of Hollywood - AmigaSeeDC
Andreas Falkenhahn:
Today's Hollywood screenshots show AmigaSeeDC, a real application created
with Hollywood. AmigaSeeDC is an image viewer like ACDSee or IrfanView
that are very popular on the PC market. You can select a picture and then
browse through the picture's directory by simply pressing cursor up and
down. AmigaSeeDC is also able to zoom in and out. It took me only 1 hour
to program AmigaSeeDC with Hollywood. And of course this cool example
program is included on the Hollywood CD-ROM. If you've always wanted a
viewer program for your Amiga that is standard on every PC, order Hollywood
now. I also use AmigaSeeDC privately because it's really cool.

Demo: Huhnvasion3D
Huhnvasion3D, which is under development for Amiga PPC for one year, was
published now as Freeware for the PC. It is a technology
demo for Wintel computers, which was developed, in order to find a
Publisher for the financing of the further development of the AMiga PPC version. Since this did not
succeed since early 2001, the demo is now made available
as Freeware for Wintel systems.

The Legacy

The Legacy: Extension for the Game forum integrated
The Legacy is the game museum for C64, Amiga, Atari, PC,
Schneider/Amstrad CPC, which supplies the readers with screenshots,
cover scans and information about the developers. A small extension for
the Game-Forum
was integrated. The last forum entries can now be displayed in the
Sidebar of the Mozilla browser and will be updated every 15 minutes.
This can be activated on the front site as well as in the game forum.

A strongly revised version 2.0 of ArTKanoid is now available for download at the title

Game: AMHuhn Version 1.1 and news
Franz 'CjStroker' Schlick and Telemar Rosenberger found a new name for their programming activities. The name is Abacus Design.
For AMHuhn and future projects a page was created, which is accessible at the title link. The page is a subpage of Amiforce and also uses its forum. Appropriate boards were also created. Updates on AMHuhn version 1.1:
An update of AMHuhn version 1.1 is now available. With the
update some problems are fixed. This update can only be downloaded after a
free registration. We ask all users, that are interested in the update,
to be honest. After input of the data the download starts automatically.

AmigaZone: StAHG update available
StAHG (the Standard Amiga Help Guide) has received an update (version
1.1). This update is free, and replaces the previous version.
Bugfix: This version corrects an error in which some documents could
be missed during the scanning process.
StAHG is a free utility from AmigaZone as a gift to the Amiga
Community. It scans the HELP assign for various forms of
documentation and builds a single "WorkBench.guide" with links to each
document. The Workbench.guide is accessable by pressing the "Help"
key under AmigaOS 3.5 or higher.

Catweasel Software Updates, X-Surf News
The Windows-drivers for the Catweasel ISA have been extended by some
features. Mainly support for the new Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper has
been added. Also in the archive: a driver for Windows 2000 and Windows
XP that makes use of a keyboard that's connected to the Catweasel MK3
PCI/Flipper.

The Amiga-version of the driver has also been adapted to the new
controller, the new multidisk.device V3.62 now supports the Catweasel
MK3 in a Zorro slot, or on any clockport of an Amiga. This device is
prepared to support the Catweasel MK3 in a PCI slot of an emulated
Amiga (for example Amithlon or Amiga Forever).

Many people have asked for a picture of the new controller, because
it's hard to imagine how the same board can fit in the Zorro slot and
in a PCI slot. Here's a picture of the controller, taken out of the
running production. It shows the bare board without the metal bracket
and the second joystick connector.

Good news for all Amiga users who want to bring their computer to a
network: The most successful networking card in the Amiga market has
been updated, and the price will be lower. The reason for the continuous
success of the board might be it's software support: The X-Surf 2 will
remain the only networking card on the market that comes with PPPoE
drivers - these are necessary for most DSL modems. As opposed to the
older model, the new X-Surf 2 does not have a BNC connection any more,
all other technical details remain the same. If you need this connector
you should be quick, because the last boards have already been shipped
to our resellers a few weeks ago.

Back to the Roots: New games, a.o.t. Karate Kid 2 and scans

Media: Self-destructing DVDs
The American manufacturer MGM has developed a technology by which DVDs become
unreadable after the expiration of a certain time span, e.g. 2 days after
opening the package. In the process chemicals are used which, when exposed to
air, trigger a chemical reaction which can't be stopped.

Event: ARC 2002 - Advance ticket sale started
The advance ticket sale for the 'AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002'
fair taking place on 7th and 8th December 2002 in Aachen has begun.
The Web form for the advance ticket sale have been online since today. As of
now, tickets can be ordered with a price reduced by EUR 1,-. This is the first

Text viewer: EvenMore V0.60
On 15th November 2002, version 0.60 of the text viewer 'EvenMore' has been
released. In this version the plugin system for the EvenMore preferences
has been updated. Chris Perver writes:
"The new plugin system will allow users to create user settings in the
preference window for their own plugins. EvenMore automatically loads and
saves the plugin settings whenever the main settings are loaded or
saved. This will allow more complicated plugins to be created.
An example of this plugin has been created for the Generic2Text plugin, to
allow you to open a binary file in readable or hexadecimal view.
The other plugins have had to be updated to support a change in the plugin
system and in the EvenMore executable."

GoldED Studio AIX: service pack 3
For the allround text editor GoldED Studio AIX is since yesterday the
service pack 3 available for registered users. The most important new feature is the integration of the gcc compiler. This complete software package is needed for the C/C++ development with GNU C. Via GED is the programming environment integrated within minutes into the editor using a comfortable setup program.
Because of the huge size of gcc is this update only deliverable as a replacement CD: since the last version have 67 MB just in form of data been added. The costs are 10.- Euro.

Andreas 'da Silva' Szabo has released version 1.14 of his flexible and expandable datatype processor and ripper Amiga Filterium (short AFilter). The following changes have been done in version 1.14:

IOSPIRIT will be present with an own booth at the
AMIGA- and Retrocomputing 2002
in Aachen on 7th and 8th December 2002.
On 12 m² visitors to the fair will have the possibility to see all
IOSPIRIT-products in action and to buy them. Besides the current versions
of fxSCAN and VHI Studio this will also include the brandnew fxPAINT 2.0.
Updates from older versions are - with the exception of VHI Studio -
available without having to present the original medium.
Depending on the progresses made during the weeks until the fair, up to
two new products will be presented.

Benchmark-Tool: AmigaMARK LPA almost finished
The Austrian Rupert Hausberger has worked for some months on a new Freeware benchmark-tool called
AmigaMARK LPA. The author has now announced that the program is ready to 98%. Currently the program is in
beta test. The first release will be only published in some time because the documentation still
has to be written.
AmigaMARK LPA (Lowlevel Preformance Analyse) is an application which determines the perfomance of the
computer on which it runs. The performance is measured in three sections:
Processor, memory and harddrive. Then a detailed report will be put out in HTML or TXT. There is the
possibility to compare the results with the help of a graphic display with other computers.
There will be defenitely versions for 68K and MorphOS. If there will be also a version for AmigaOS4
is uncertain and depends on it if the author will get developer information.

Emulator: WinUAE version 0.8.22 R2 released
Today the Amiga emulator WinUAE has been released in version 0.8.22 R2 by Toni
Wilen.
New features:
- Kickstart 1.3 RDB and regular hardfile autoboot/automount support.
KS 1.3 regular (non-RDB) HDF autoboot requires FastFileSystem from WB1.3:L in KS roms-directory.
- Keyboard/mouse/joystick handling rewritten for DirectInput.
Windows keys are now 100% usable as an Amiga keys and SHIFT-keys don't get stuck anymore.
- Mouse speed configuration.
- All keyboard keys (even special "multimedia keys") are available in input-tab configuration window.
- Configurable floppy drive type (3.5"DD/3.5"HD/A1010 5.25"SD).
Following features require Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
- "Unlimited" hardfile size (2G limit removed),
uaehf.device now supports TD64 and NSD -style 64-bit addressing.
NTFS filesystem required for >4G hardfiles (FAT32 max file size is about 4G).
WARNING: Make sure installed AmigaOS is new enough (OS 3.9 recommended).
- Ability to mount real harddisks with full RDB automount/autoboot support.
- Amithlon partition support.
Bugs fixed:

Game: Tales of Tamar - New Amiga version 0.46
Version 0.46 is the first official (and of course free) update for Tales
of Tamar. As promised, we'll keep improving and expanding the game.
Since the release of the CD version, quite a few things have happened:
New features:
- Title screen reconverted. Antialiasing improved
- Diplomacy: Personal messages can be sent and received
- Cheat protection for ARMY, SHIP and MOVE chunk
- Fonts have been reworked by Damaso Dominguez
- Spanish characters are now shown correctly
- ToT is now running on MorphOS for Amiga and Pegasos
- new BardsTale stories
- Ruines added
- new map images for town level 2 to 4
- CGX V5 is now recognized
Bugfixes:
- first level town had incorrect number of inhabitants
- plundered trade ships left their loaded figure in the water. Fixed
- loss of capital caused problems
- fallback mode for screen mode rewritten
- output in FTP routine and diplomacy removed
- Bugfix in chunkmachine
- Bugfixes in stringinput
- Bugfixes in TaverneOfflineChat
- resources display under AGA fixed
- some bugfixes relating to ships

We'd like to discuss three things in particular:
First is the new option to send "intime" messages directly
to another player. The feature allows you to act completely
undetected, you don't have to use a secondary email account
to exchange messages without a third party noticing. A quite
useful addition.
Next is the addition of ruins and different town levels on the map.
Before, all towns had the same image, the one of a small village.
From now on, abandoned towns will show as ruins and the image of a
town will adapt to its size. Major towns will be visible as such to
everyone.
The whole system can be extended as far as adapting the land around a town.
The bigger your town becomes, the more settlement and small buildings
will appear in the surrounding lands. You may see small farms, picturesque
houses by small lakes, or hunters hideouts. Your land can change every turn.
The possibilities are only limited by the capacity of the server and the
number of players. The more players, the more possibilities :-)
Last but not least, we would like to thank some people for helping us
bringing Tales of Tamar to MorphOS. First would be Ralph Schmidt, who
really helped and just talked like other people. And Frank Mariak, whose
fixes to CyberGFX V5 made it possible for Tales to be adapted. Thank you
to both of them!
Tales of Tamar is now running on MorphOS for Amiga and Pegasos. It benefits
from the WarpUP emulation in MorphOS, which seems to be even faster than
the original. Since Tales of Tamar is a mixed binary, the PPC routines
work under MorphOS as well. Animations are even faster there. We will
keep adapting more features to MorphOS in the future.

Offensive Elbox driver and consequences for Poseidon
Chris Hodges writes:
Dear Poseidon Users,
in the last few days, there were rumours posted to ann.lu, claiming that
the usb.device, that is provided by Elbox Computer Inc. for the Spider USB
PCI card would contain malicious code. This code was posted disassembled
on various websites. This source code, if assemblied into an executable,
would indeed have the ability to kill the RDB (if it was found in block
0). Code destroying data on purpose like this is illegal in most countries
(including Germany) and moreover, is one of the ethically worst things
I've ever seen.
As the source of this security warning was an anonymous poster and
therefore was not reliable, I wanted to check for myself. So I loaded the
usb.device (some friendly Mediator user sent me, as Elbox never offered me
a SpiderCD to check the contents of the CD), let it decrypt itself and
just searched for the 'RDSK' string in the driver (as seen on the
disassembled source code on the websites). No disassembly was used. The
string was found. I could therefore verify that the offensive code is at
least in version 1.2 of the device, I had here to test (there is
absolutely NO reason why 'RDSK' would appear in an usb hardware device
driver).
I gave Elbox the chance to clear things up in public by posting an apology
and removing the code. They didn't. Instead, they said that all my
"doubts" would be answered in the press statement released yesterday and
ignored the consequences that I already had proposed to them.
Well, my "doubts", which actually are facts, that I could see with my own
eyes, remain. Any Mediator user can check this by using a memory monitor
and searching for the usb.device in memory (after loading up Poseidon) and
see, if there's the 'RDSK' ID string within the next 10000 bytes.
As a consequence, I have to warn Mediator users that their machine is in
danger, when running the usb.device. In the non-memory protected Amiga
environment it might get damaged at any time and then cause the routine
that kills the RDB to become active. The next update of Poseidon will
refuse to load up the usb.device, if it detects malicious code. This is
to protect yourself from damage and myself from being held liable for any
loss of data or damage done.
Moreover, I hereby withdraw the permission to include Poseidon in ELBOX's
software distributions, until they
- admit, that the code was in their driver,
- admit, that they have constantly lied to the users,
- have placed a public apology for the first time in their life,
- and have removed any malicious code.
I don't want Poseidon to be included with third party software, that's
highly illegal and whose originators don't deserve any trust.
I do understand that people try to protect their work from being hacked. I
do this too, but not by risking the data of legal users and I cannot
tolerate this offensive behaviour any longer (I admit, I'm again rather
upset and therefore this statement is not as objective as it could have
been).
The Spider users out there are adviced to confront Elbox with the demands
mentioned above, so to allow Poseidon again accept the usb.device driver.
I hope that you believe the facts and my worries and understand the steps
taken.

Elbox: New driver for Spider USB 2.0 Hi-Speed card
The SpiderUP 1.10 update for the
Spider USB 2.0 High-Speed
card has been made available today.
As anonymous hackers attempted to spread the patch supposed to allow
hacking the code of our driver, we are releasing the new driver version
protected against such attacks.
The usb.device 1.10 requires the
Poseidon stack
ver.1.31 as a minimum.

Elbox dispels rumours about usb.device
Press release: For long years, our company has been making efforts to make users of our hardware proud that they receive the best software support. This support is also the most dynamically expanded in the Amiga market.
Some persons/companies do not like this situation, as they would like to compete with Elbox. They know they cannot, though: they have no knowledge or employees to work with or determination to provide on-going support for their products. However, we continue receiving signals from various sources on attempts at disassembling and hacking our drivers for the purpose of stealing the results of our efforts and work.
In recent days the Amiga community witnessed rumours related to our latest product: the Spider USB 2.0 card. In order to clarify this we feel obliged to respond officially to them.
Rumour: Using the Elbox usb.device with an USB PCI card other than Spider USB 2.0 High-Speed may lead to trashing the disk RDB.
Answer: Not true.
If anyone is trying to run the Elbox usb.device with any USB PCI card other
than Spider USB 2.0 (for which this driver is dedicated), the only result
is that the driver does not work with this card and a requester window
appears on the screen: 'No Spider USB 2.0 card found.'
Rumour: Whoever has a Mediator may modify Spider drivers so that they support USB PCI cards from other parties.
Answer: No.
The Elbox usb.device is software protected by international copyright law.
Only owners of the Spider card are licensed to use these drivers (the
drivers are bundled with the cards). The only legal way to acquire the
usb.device drivers is to buy the original Spider package. The software
is always licensed for a specific person and only that person. The
licence for using the driver does not give any right to modify the
code (which is property of Elbox).
Rumour: The usb.device driver has some procedures, which may damage hdd RDB if any external program accidentally damages the driver code.
Answer: No.
Elbox pays much attention to protect its drivers against any improper operation in case of accidental damage to their code by any external events. To ensure this, Elbox drivers are encrypted. When run, they automatically decrypt themselves and verify internal checksums to guarantee the maximum security of operation. This is the best way to prevent program crash if, due to any reason, the code is damaged when read from the media.
Obviously, even such protection measures cannot protect the program against a hacking attack, that is against a program, which purposefully modifies the code to make some part of it operate in a way different from the original intention. No software available for Amiga computers, including Amiga operating systems, can be 100% protected against such hacking attacks.
We hope that what we have stated here explains away all the doubts for good. As always, we stand with full guarantee for our software and our registered users have no reasons to worry. We develop and distribute software, which is reliable, efficient and innovative.

collection of help files easier to access. Naturally, the first question
to come up is, "What help files?" The answer is, "Exactly!" Or, if you

"HELP:" assign.
Now, the AmigaZone division of Merlancia Industries is offering a free
program that helps to clean that mess up, and in the process takes
advantage of an overlooked feature of AmigaOS 3.5 (and above).
StAHG builds a list of all of the documents found in the "Help:" assign and
its subdirectories (.doc, .dok, .txt, .guide), then creates "Workbench.guide"
in the propor location to satisfy the requirements for the HELP button to
open the file in Multiview. Once run, "Workbench.guide" is available to
the OS, and StAHG does not need to be run again (unless you want to update
your "Workbench.guide") Directory Opus users may want to note that
"Workbench.guide" does not clash with, or override, the Magellen help system.
StAHG is a free download. This is AmigaZone's gift back to the community
for years of their support. Of course we would like you to sign up for
the free trial period to try AmigaZone.. We'd like it even more if you'd
join AmigaZone as a fully paid member.. We do not, however, require that,
in order for you to have StAHG. There are no pop-up advertising windows,
as this was just a fun way to remind everyone of the wonderful service we

Remote control GUI for FroggerNG

Motivated by boredom I tinkered a "remote control" for FroggerNG. This offers a data requester, play, pause,
stop, multi data select and prevfile/nextfile (if several files are selected).
Furthermore it can easy used to control the volume of FroggerNG. There is a video CD option for replaying VCDs, but this function isn't integrated into FroggerNG yet. Only an error message appears. The numberblock isn't read in yet. Since this is only a test program don't expect something special.

DeNIC: New DENIC name servers are showing effect
After inauguration of the new servers - among other places one in Tokio
and two in the USA - the response times for DE domains were decreased
dramatically. User in Asia, North America and from the Pacific area are
gaining most. This was shown by measurements of the Japanese domain
register authority JPRS and the DENIC. Recently Internet users from Japan,
Corea, China or Australia had to wait 300 milli seconds avaragely, this
values were more than halved now. Most drastically this decrease shows
effect in Japan where the times were cut from 270 to less than 5 milli
seconds. Requests from the USA for DE domains are also answered faster
now by the both new servers at the American east and west coast. The
response times were reduced from about 170 to 70 milli seconds.
In Europe the coverage was very hight recently. But it has been further
improved by some more name servers. With the additional name server in
London as an example the response time for Great Britain was halved to
about 25 milli seconds.
Background: Name server
Name servers ensure that an Internet site is reachable, because these
have the assigns between domain and numeric IP address saved. The central
name server for all DE domains is run by the DENIC eG located in Frankfurt.
Copies of the information of this primary name server are stored at
several secondary name servers in Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Dortmund,
Stuttgart, London, Vienna, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Tokio,

TTEngine 5.0 released
TTEngine is the TrueType font based text rendering engine for AmigaOS.
Version 5.0 can be downloaded from the home page
of TTEngine. New version has some interesting features.
- Two new functions: TT_GetPixmap() and TT_FreePixmap() for text pixelmap
extraction. Pixelmap is 8 bit per pixel, 256 gray levels. Then the pixmap
may be further processed. Useful for e.g. painting and image processing
software.
- Antialiasing is now based on pixel luminance and hue (RGB correction is
applied as well). Gives even better text quality especially on contrasting
background (e.g. red text on green).
- New text styles: underline, double underline, overstrike, double overstrike.
- Fixed bugs in JAM2, INVERSVID and COMPLEMENT draw modes.
- Colours of text can be now specified directly as RGB via TT_Foreground
and TT_Background tags.
As always some bugs have been fixed. Check "release_notes" file in the
distribution archive for the full list of changes.

Game: New settings for Bots Quake2-Mods
It's happend to be that the new "Battle of the Sexes" mod, which is at the Amiga
Quake2 site downloadable is incompatible if run with the default settings. At the Amiga Quake2 site I made a new QuakeII.info (Bots.info) downloadable which contains slightly modificated settings and works with Bots also.
The not yet released "Blastchamber" mod
and several other modules not yet released, might have this problem.
So better use the new icon file.
With the basic game Quake2 and most other mods the default settings will
work as well. Only some mods like Bots were hit by that problem and for these the new file solves the problem.

Sharp announces new Zaurus models
Like Infosync (see title link) reports, Sharp announces two new Zaurus
models. The SL 5600 (B500 in Japan) for the USA and Japan and the
C700 for Japan only. There is nothing said about an availability in Germany.
The model SL 5600 is a further developed SL5500. A comparisation of the technical dates is to obtain from
linux devices.
The SL5600 contains with the XScale 400 MHz a faster processor,
a stronger accu and an updated software suite (e. g.
newer Linux kernel, Opera6). Furthermore the SL 5600 has a lot more (64 MB instead of 16 MB) Flash memory than the SL 5500. This will be used now with the SL 5600 for installing additional programs and to save data. So programs and data won't be lost even the accu runs empty.

This even shows that the Jeode Java System by Insignia will be used and not the Java implementation of he Amiga partner TAO.
