Vapor

Library: vapor_toolkit V15.13
Version 15.13 of the "vapor_toolkit.library" was released for AmigaOS and MorphOS. This library offers support functions used by most Vapor applications to reduce code size. The library's functions include the procedure of registration and watching for new versions at vapor.com. Changes in this version:

  • Changed: Every character of an URL greater than 127 are regocnized as end mark. This should solve the AmIRC URL problem with the French catalog.
  • New: URLs without scheme within quotation marks now are recognized ["www.blah.com"].
  • Changed: Default memory needs of URL recognition reduced.

Virus Help Denmark

Virus Help Denmark: Safe V17.7, Integrity V1.2
Version 17.1 of the virus detector "Safe" by Zbigniew Trzcionkowski was released. "Safe" recognizes viruses in memory and removes them if possible.

Safe contains a bugfix and the packet was splitted into three parts: "Safe", "Integrity" und "WatchDog".

Changes:
  • Bugfix: Fixed "mislooks" in VECS, SAVEMEM and DIS anyway, seems only I use these options...
"Safe" runs on AmigaOS 2.04+ and requires xvs.library.

"Integrity" is a disk tool displaying any file added, deleted or changed since the last time "Integrity" was launched. This is helpful to discover viruses / trojans in the system, but information also can be used to remove recently installed but not desired files, such like fonts, libraries, etc..

"Integrity" runs on AmigaOS v2.04+, the MMU version requires mmu.library.

Audio: Ogg Vorbis-Libraries for AmigaOS
On the Da SixK Port Page quick done ports of the libOgg and libVorbis were released. The Ogg Vorbis format is an open source audio format being an alternative for MP3.

The release of this developer kit is to encourage people to program a new player or an Ogg Vorbis plugin for AmigaAmp.

The libVorbis directory contains examples for the use of the Ogg Vrobis libraries. There also is "decode_example", a Ogg Vrobis to PCM decoder, contained.

There is also an example for how to code files to Ogg Vorbis format, but this does not seem to work properly.

Amiga: NDK V3.9 released
Since Friday the update of the native developer kit on AmigaOS 3.9 is available for download at the AmigaOS 3.9 area of amiga.com.

The NDK v3.9 bases on the NDK 3.5 released on "Amiga Developer CD 2.1" and is in part identical with this.

The example programs are mostly the same, as well as the tutorials and tools. C headers and assembler headers, linker libraries, autodocs, and ARexx interface documentaions for the Workbench have been updated. New are the "release note files" and the so called "sfd files".

amiga.lib stubs, clib prototyp header-, pragma header, and .fd files are all generated by the sfd files.

As an example tool for processing sfd files "sfd" is included in the tools directory - but, one can also use third-party tools like "fd2pragma" (by Dirk Stöcker). Note: sfd files of this release have been "sanified", meaning protected and internal data are left out.

C header files have been cleared and their syntax were verified again. They now compile problemless with SAS/C and GCC, even if all compiler warnings are enabled.

This release contains no specific GGC header files, but this might change in future updates.

As of this writing, the specific requirements for GCC on the native 68k and on the PowerPC platforms are still somewhat uncertain. To the best of our knowledge, the compiler specific header files would have covered the ROM interface, that is, the pragma header files only. As the "sfd" files are provided with this distribution, you should be able to rebuild your platform specific header files yourself, or obtain a set from your compiler vendor.

This NDK update also represents a milestone regarding the assembler header files. With this release these are no longer guaranteed to by synchron to their counterparts in C.

Questions, bugreports, and wishes regarding the NDK 3.9 should be send directly to that person, who created this updated: Olaf Barthel.

Thanks to all who contributed to this update, including Martin Blom, Don Cox, James Jacobs, Gunther Nikl, Alastair M. Robinson, Matt Sealey, Steven Solie, Martin Steigerwald, Dirk Stöcker, Neil William, and others!

Dennis Lohr of Psyria has received the permission of Jim Cuomo to convert the title song of Defender of the Crown for mobile phones. Everyone with a phone with note editor can now enter the melody of Defender of the Crown:

The first number is the note type:
1= full
2= half
4= quarter
8= quaver
16= sixteenth

The letter stands for the note itself (long with a "." where necessary). The third number stands for the note height (octave). You are usually in octave 5 after starting the editor.

The user should choose the speed for the piece himself since every mobile phone varies the speed differently. For a Siemens mobile phone for example the optimal speed would be "03". (ps) (Translation: rh)

Encyclopedia mentiones the Amiga
The "Multimedia-Encyclopedia 2002", which can be purchased at Aldi (German discounter), is reading about the Amiga:

»Amiga
Home computer developed in the 80th by the company Amiga, then distributed by Commodore with Motorola processors. Popular home computers of the Amiga line are the models Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000. More efficient versions of the Amiga also could be utilized for more challenging projects (Amiga 2000 and Amiga 4000).

Amiga was taken over by the German trade chain Escom, then by the US company Viscorp, and finally by the company Amino, but though several announcements were made no new Amiga products were launched, so far.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

AGC failed
Unfortunately there has not been much interest in my attempt to found the AGC (Amiga Guide Community). I intended to create a common basis for all those who like to work with the AmigaGuideFormat. I was also going to create a website which should have contained all publications of the AmigaGuideFormat that have been ever written.

Some of the active AmigaGuide writer answered very pleased but nobody could help me realizing the project so I stopped it in summer 2001.

Up to now I did not have the time to publish this sad message. Sad because the AmigaGuideFormat is underestimated of most of the Amiga users although it is used very often. However, maybe there is somebody who is interested in. I still have not thrown away my notices of this project. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Also fixed an enforcer hit when closing the window, was freeing the gadgets twice ;/.

VNC: zvnc V.1.1
David Gerber has released version 1.1 of his VNC client "zvnc" on 28. December 2001. Following the changes:

  • Bugfix: Port- and cx_priority arguments were not observed.
  • New: Documentation extended with more FAQ entries.

"zvnc" is a small VNC-Client without display support (for controlling a second machine with monitor). The advantage of "zvnc" are a minimum of data to be send via the network, because the graphics data are not applied. That makes control by mouse and keyboard very straight.

The archive contains versions for AmigaOS 2.x / 3.x, and MorphOS.

In this article Birgitte Zarzer reports about the system administrator David McOwen, who provided unused machine time of several computers of the University of Georgia to distributed.net, and thereby catched harshly trouble in return. He will face court in January and possibly will catch very long lasting imprisonment.

There are also many Amiga users helping distributed.amiga.org to crack the RC5 key. This worldwide competition is about to crack a 64bit key by calculating all of the 18.4 trillons of possibilities. One can provide unused computing capabilities of the own machine for this matter by using some specified software.

Computer club: APC&TCP dissolved (Update)
On 23rd December 2001 APC&TCP announced officially that the computer club APC&TCP was dissolved. The APC&TCP distribution continues to exist. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Update 31. December 2001:
Kilian Servais, issuer of the APC&TPC disk magazine NoCover (German) wrote to the German comments on this article:

Hi!
Dissolving of the club in deed is not that tragical, because the only service, which alwas has been taken consequently, was the NoCover. Meantime this became freeware and everybody, who would like to, can registert to the email distribution list free of charge - just send an email to kilian@apc-tcp.de! In the times of Internet and email a club, like the APC&TCP has been, only makes sense in a very limited way, anyway, cause the Community will stay alive in any case. All users without Internet account can get the NoCover on floppy disk, as well. Due to the club dissolving the yearly charge slipps, but though we will try to offer as much services as possible.

So, at heart dissolving of the club is no step back but a step forward. The NoCover can get well as freeware, Andreas can concentrate on the Future (German Amiga games magazine), etc., etc.. So people: We'll keep at it!! What ever may come!!

Telepolis

Telepolis: Mail for you!
An initiative wants to retaliate upon AOL - they return one million CDs to sender.

In his article Torsten Kleins talks about the return of one million AOL CDs planned by Nomoreaolcds from a completely different point of view.

»Christmas is the time for giving. Our cupids get extensively packed presents from indoctrinated salespersons, donation collectors leave houses with filled collecting boxes, even postmen and garbagemen - sorry: post deliverers and garbage technicians become the target of our lordliness.
But there are only a few companies as involved with the latter two professional guilds as AOL is. What the fist one puts into our postpoxes in exhausting legwork the second one comes to pick it up shortly after: AOL CDs. It is the time to say thank you to the friendly provider from America. Let us send a parcel to AOL.«

Individual Computers: xsurfadsl.device Snowflake-Bugfix
A new update of the PPPoE-driver for our networking card X-Surf can be found in the support-area of our website. The last bug in the core routines has been removed, so a connection to the internet is stable at full transfer rates for several hours. Since this version has only been tested shortly, it remains in beta state. The archive contains an English readme file for the first time.

The driver is free for owners of the X-Surf ethernet card. It lets you connect to DSL and cable modem services that use the PPPoE-standard without the need to buy expensive additional software. In Germany DSL is marketed as T-DSL by the Deutsche Telekom, but smaller providers like 1&1, Hansenet and some local services also offer this broadband technology.

We want to remind our German customers of the new terms and conditions at the Telekom: If you order DSL before January 1st, you'll get the DSL modem for free. After that, you'll have to pay 119,95 EUR for the modem! (ps)

Also, Russian and Portugues catalogs now available courtesy of Raul Silva and Vitaliy Chepeleff! Download now for free at www.evenmore.co.uk (title link)! (ps)

LucasArts Scumm games port for MorphOS
Rüdiger Hanke writes in the forum:
At first Merry Christmas to all of you :-))
I do not want to release something for MorphOS before there is a stable running beta version of it but now it is Christmas and because of that I released a little SDL-port.

I discovered it a few days ago was excited about this project, and maybe you too, if you like the old style adventures and who are annoyed of the 3D-boom and the it-is-a-joke-but-it-has-rendered-gfx-games are not the ones you like: http://www.muenster.de/~tomjoad/svm.html.

You cannot reach it from the main page because I want keep the MorphOS pages separeted from the Amiga pages and the MorphOS pages are not finished yet.

ScummVM is an interpreter for the great old LucasArts SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) adventures. Games currently reported to work include the Amiga classics The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, plus Day of the Tentacle and (very incomplete - just for a first look) my own favorite Sam & Max Hit the Road, which have never been available on the Amiga. The ScummVM team is apparently working on support of The Dig and Full Throttle as well. (ps) (Translation: gf)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

WB-Tools is a collection of arexx-scripts for adding additional functions to the workbench. These scripts are described in my workshop "Komfortabel: Workbench mit ARexx erweitern" published in issue no. 1/2002 of the Amiga-Magazin. WB-Tools is a invitation for programming your own addons. 23.Dec.2001
Amiga Inc.

Bill McEwen: Holiday Greetings, Progress Report, AmigaDE Videos, etc.
After more than 6 months a new Executive Update is being released, written by Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga Inc. He is aware of the long delay and apologizes for the long lasting silence. But he says more and even shows something up.

Executive Update - 23. Dezember 2001 - Happy Holidays!

I know that it has been months since you have read something official from the Amiga team. This is not because of lack of activity; in fact, far from it. Whether it is raising money in the US, joint development with partners in the Far East, or developing Ami2D in Sweden and New Zealand, Amiga is truly a global, 24 hours a day company.

First, we would like to say thanks to every one of you for your continued support. It has been a challenging year and Amiga continues to fight battles in this depressed technology market. However, even in these tough times, the true spirit of Amiga and the community has come shining through. We are very happy with our partners and are looking forward to a great future together in the year ahead.

There has been confusion regarding the future of Amiga. Some members of the community are spreading rumors and even going to the extent of hacking web sites, to post false information. Remember, if you do not read it on the official Amiga website or on the developer website, consider it rumor and regard it with appropriate suspicion. If you have any concerns, contact the team or me directly. Let us address any issues that you might have. We will answer. It might not be what you want to hear, but we will address your concerns.

Amiga is here to win! We will win big by attacking segments of the market, where there is a clear opportunity for us to have a significant impact and achieve defendable business. The opportunity for Amiga is stronger than ever. With our two-pronged strategy, of AmigaDE as the universal content system and the AmigaOS as our desktop, workstation and server, we can offer a complete solution for the home, the office, the school or wherever digital computing needs exist.

The Amiga team and I are in this for the long haul, as we know that Amiga can succeed. All of our marketing contacts, our business contacts and, our developer contacts are telling us that this is the time for Amiga. We have seen potential partners, content producers and even companies, in our own business park, disappear. However, Amiga is still in business. As the US economy begins to recover, we are leaner and stronger than we have ever been.

One of the strengths of Amiga is that the Amiga team really extends far out into the world through the users, developers, and dealers. Success for Amiga is success for all of you as well. For too long, the Amiga community has not had anything to be proud of. However, with the launch of our first AmigaDE based products, it is time for the whole Amiga team to work together again. At the end of this update, I am going to ask for some help from everyone because only by working together can Amiga move forwards.

For those of you hungry for specific news, here are some updates:

Amiga Digital Environment™:

The Amiga DE™ Player1.0 for both Windows and Linux is now ready and shipping! We have a new website for AmigaDE, which will in the not-so-far future become a user focal point for everything AmigaDE and we encourage you to visit, participate, and spread the word.

The AmigaDE™ Player is the first step towards our vision of the Digital Habitat™, being the launch product for the AmigaDE (Digital Environment), a set of technologies that brings users and their content together regardless of the digital device they choose to use. The AmigaDE™ has been targeted directly at the user who wants to be able to experience content on any of their digital devices, without having to worry about which of those devices work with that content. Whether the content is an application, a game, music, video, email, or whatever, with the AmigaDE ™ Player the answer is that they all do.

In the coming weeks, many more applications will be released. Third party developers are currently working on products that will scale up to and expect desktop capabilities. Bittersweet, Edivision, e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment, Kaliko, Matay, Pagan Games, Ruksun Software, Technomages, Titan Computer, VecTrace, Zeoneo, some companies yet to be announced as well as many individuals, are all working hard to take advantage of the DE opportunity.

We are looking forward to seeing more people join the ranks of the more than 3000 developers already developing for Amiga. Amiga and our partners will be issuing press releases over the next few weeks as the momentum builds. We will be introducing these new and existing companies. For more information, see the developer website.

What does this really mean? Many of you ask the really important question "When can I buy one of these new AmigaDE enabled devices?" I can tell you that Sharp will soon be shipping their device. Tao Group and Sharp have selected Amiga to provide all developer support for intent™ on the Sharp SL5000D. For more information on how Sharp, Tao and Amiga are working together see the intent-sharp website.

I have also just signed a contract with one of the largest Set Top Box companies in the world. Unfortunately, I will not be able to give out the name until the second week of January, but you will be pleased.

AmigaDE is now running on numerous other devices. Many of these vendors are working with us on making these products a reality, in the first quarter of 2002. Here are some sample MPEG videos of just a few of the products, with AmigaDE running on them. Click on a screenshot to download/view the MPEG video.

AmigaDE SDK 1.1

With the AmigaDE moving forward and the AmigaDE Players released, we can now concentrate on moving all of the developed technology into the new SDK. Many of these technologies are already in beta and are being tested by members of the Amiga Developer Network.

For instance, our new Ami2D services have been available to a select few for two months now. In fact, Pulsar Interactive's new AmigaDE game, Gobbler, was written using this technology. Ami2D is a very exciting development, and I believe that it will give DE developers a definite advantage over what other products can offer.

Even more exciting, working closely in conjunction with our partners at Hyperion, Ami3D is advancing towards the release stage. I have seen screen shots of the new Ami3D in action, and have stared at screens throwing solids around and bouncing off walls. This is great news because with the portability of DE application and the new 2D and 3D services, AmigaDE developers will be able to demonstrate their creativity.

There is great excitement here concerning some of our new scaling technologies that are going to provide Amiga applications with even more flexibility and more capabilities than ever before.

I know many of you have read about the progress of SHEEP, our next generation programming language. Yes, it is a scripting language but it is also far more than that, and can be used to do anything, from writing small scripts and macros all the way up to creating full fledged applications. It will be a great addition not just to the DE, but also to application development in general and we are very proud of it.

Add to this a new look interface, intelligent icons, new development environments, an amazing descriptive interface service called Prism™ and a boatload of other stuff, and the new SDK will provide developers with a real taste of the future.

While contract negotiations are always under Non Disclosure Agreements, I can say that with the OEM's that we are working with, and the soon to be released devices that will utilize DE technology and content, then it could well be a merry AmigaDE Christmas.

Amiga Desktop Progress and a new Surprise

AmigaOS

The AmigaOS is a crucial part of our future. I have emphasized this sentence because I want the Amiga community to repeatedly read it and burn it into their hearts and minds. We will passionately and vigorously develop AmigaOS into a world-beating product. Moreover, we passionately and vigorously will defend it against anyone who would try to damage, demean, or seek to take illegal advantage of AmigaOS for their own ends.

I want to apologize for announcing in St Louis that new AmigaOS products would be available on November 1. I did this with the best intentions but many factors have contributed to this slipping, some bad, such as the financial squeeze, compounded by the September 11 atrocity, some unexpected, such as the announcement of the G5, and some good, such as the advances in the next generation development that have made us rethink our transition.

The transition between the AmigaOne and the succeeding generation of the platform requires careful management. We have studied transitions on other platforms to ensure that we try to do what others did right and not do what others did wrong. The transition requires in depth knowledge of AmigaOS3.x software and the classic Amiga hardware and we are relying heavily on our partners, as you will see below.

Another team is developing the next generation Amiga entirely and its design and information is being kept a secret. This is to keep down the rumors and keep the teams focused on getting AmigaOS 4.0, AmigaOne, and AmigaDE to either their first ship or next release.

Hyperion, Eyetech and the other teams in this partnership are very busy and there is a great deal for all of us to do. Believe me there is no better-dedicated team in the world on getting it all done. With this said and in order to alleviate the long periods of silence that may result because of this, the executive updates will start to appear once a month, so that we can share what we can with you.

However, in order to let you know that this is not just noise, Amiga has engaged a partner company from the outside that brings us incredible depth, and has a long history of creating the best of the best in designs. The company is Design Genetix, and the team has already proved to us to be a great fit for our next generation designs in hardware, and will assist us with third party manufacturing.

Design Genetix has garnered over 400 product awards, while launching hundreds of portable, desktop and server products. They have experience in growing product lines from $2.4 billion to over $17 billion over five years.

AmigaOne

Eyetech and their team are making excellent progress with the AmigaOne board. We have seen the work that is being accomplished on the case design for an AmigaOne and an A1200. This project is entering its final stages, and we are delighted to be a participant. Yes it has been a long wait for the next generation of Amiga capable hardware but be in no doubt that the AmigaOne is very real, will be a product that you can buy, and on which Amiga will grow into something of which we can all be proud. For AmigaOne information, see Eyetech's website.

AmigaOS 4.0

AmigaOS4.0 will see the software environment moved onto the AmigaOne where it will be enhanced to take full advantage of the new hardware capabilities. AmigaOS4.0 will offer exceptional performance increases, due to removing a large number of the physical dependencies on the A1200/A4000, increased stability, due to a 'from scratch' hardware design and great new features that will allow developers to leap forwards in terms of offered applications.

To allow Amiga Inc to concentrate on the next generation AmigaDE, and because of the tight integration of AmigaOS 4.0 with the Eyetech AmigaOne product, we have outsourced the project management of AmigaOS4.0 to Hyperion Entertainment, one of the most respected software development companies in the Amiga community. For OS 4.0 information, see Hyperion's website.

They will work closely with Eyetech, Haage and Partner and all our AmigaOS partners in the project, ensuring that the AmigaOne and AmigaOS4.0 combination reaches the market in a timely manner and as a quality product. For Haage-Partner information, see the Haage & Partner website.

Conclusion

Newcomers to the software industry are often unaware of the impact that Amiga had on the computing industry. But with the launch of the DE Player, and seeing all the new content, as well as the AmigaOne and OS4.0, this is starting to change. We are working hard to accelerate this process and each of you can play your part in ensuring that your computer and your community are successful.

I say this to you because I need your help. I need all of you to remember those who used to come to the meetings. I need you to remember those in your office, or neighborhood who run Windows or Linux. I need you to look in your local papers and see who writes the business sections, and who writes the technology sections, and I need you to tell them about AmigaDE.

I need you to tell them about a technology that allows the same content to run without change on various devices. I need you to tell them about how they can use Linux or Windows, and run Amiga content on either machine. I need you to remind them that most of the current content is for PDA's and to ask them to compare what they have seen on PDA's and other handheld gaming systems to what the Amiga community has been building. In addition, I need you to support the developers who are creating content for Amiga in every way possible.

I know there are thousands in the Amiga community who want to help. I get email messages daily asking how you all can help. Well the AmigaDE Player is a big step for us, and for the many developers who have created content for it. Thousands more are working on new content! For those who have the DE Player … buy a game, and then give us feedback. This is the first step in our journey forward, and our first step together towards that future.

There are many amazing things happening at Amiga, and over the next six months, all our hard work will slowly start to emerge into the world. I want you to know so much, but for many reasons, I simply cannot tell you the bulk of what is going on. Just be assured that my team and I are putting our lives and our souls into Amiga and that your patience and loyalty will be rewarded.

For now, I need your help in spreading the good news about the AmigaDE Player. Its simplicity makes it ideal for senior citizens, parents, and children, people who have a computer, enjoy games but who are terrified of the technology. Its portability makes it perfect for developers who want to reach as many markets or as wide an audience as possible.

Go to Amiga's website, purchase some of the games, and then tell everyone you know how Amiga is binary portable; scalable, and able to provide the same content on numerous different devices and products, there is no one else that can show a product like this anywhere. Be Proud and show it off.

I promise you that it will not be another 6 months before you hear from me again, but it was only because there are only 24 hours in a day and we have been putting in 36 hours a day making it all happen.

Merry Christmas, God Bless, and bring on 2002!

18. CCC: Freedom Rights in the Data Net
Chaos Computer Club e.V.

23.12.2001

Press information on the 18th Chaos Communication Congress,

27.-29. December, 2001 in Berlin, Germany, Haus am Köllnischen Park

"Hacking is not a crime"

For the 18. year the Chaos Computer Club e.V. is organizing the Chaos Communication Congress between Chritsmas and new year's day in Berlin, Germany. This event with the subtitle "the European hackers party" during the last years became a significant meeting of about 2,500 European net activists, on which beside of dealing with topical technology developments also the social effects and parameters of the information community allways play part.

After the serious incidences of this year and numerous laws the congress' motto "hacking is not a crime" especially indicates dealing with the freedrom rights in the data nets.

"This year numerous legal arrangements have been done in a time marked by terror attacks and war propaganda, regardless of the net users and aspects of data security", Andy Müller-Maguhn, CCC speaker, illustrated the meeting's background. Especially legalizing almost unresticted rights for intelligent services to access Internet and phone connections is one of the focal points of the this year's congress.

The international participants of the this year's congress will also deal with the lack of knowledge of computer security aspects with politicians. With the Cybercrime-Convetion passed by the European Council - virtual unrecognized in the shadow of the impacts of September 11th - a law got passed which e.g. punishes the spread of computer viruses. "Until now, the Chaos Computer Club did not see any computer virus worrying about laws, in spite of intensive investigations done", Jens Ohlig, club speaker, commented this law.

"But, an alarming fact is, that already the release of attacking methods and the spread of tools for testing security arrangements in data nets shall be punished in the future. This would restrict the free and required dealing with the problems regarding computer security and hence this would prevent development of solution possibilities", explained CCC speaker Müller-Maguhn the club's objections.

On the this year's congress beside of the usual lectures about technic developments, workshops, and podium discussions for specially there will be two strategy workshops, too, in which European net activits will deal with the question of a better cooperation and strategies regarding public relations. Especially the desiderative consideration of the rights of informational self-determination and the public access to information within the scope of the amendment of copyright laws appear to make this required.

The alignment of the congress' content is rounded by traditional elements such like the hack center / data freeport, and a laboratory for electronic experiments, public archive, and several project presentations. In the scope of the presentations there will also be an explaination of the still open installation Blinkenlights of the Chaos Computer Club, which will can be seen on the "Haus des Lehrers" on the Alexanderplatz, until the end of February.

More information about the congress can be found under
http://www.ccc.de/congress/2001/

Blinkenlights on the "Haus des Lehrers", Alexanderplatz, Berlin, Germany, or

On Wednesday, 26. December 2001 there will be a press conference at 14:00 MET on the congress in the "Haus am Köllnischen Park". (sd) (Translation: mj)

Christoph Dietz

NEO Award on 13.12.2001
The NEO Award, for that amiga-news.de was also nominated, was awarded on 13.12.2001 in Stuttgart in the Mercedes Forum to several websites. Christoph Dietz has taken part for amiga-news.de in the awarding and has taken some photos. Read now the summary of his impressions.

The NEO Award was a successful event - even though we as amiga-news.de "only" made the 12th place in the cathegory ´most popular website´. But with altogether more than 500,000 registered users and with more than 2.5 million votes within a period of four weeks this ranking is for us as a news site for a marginal group a remarkable result. It's you, the readers, who fully deserve the thanks for this.

In the Stuttgart Mercedes Forum had the people arranging the NEO Award not only taken care for many people - including of course the nominees in the different areas - but also for the matching ambiente with food and drinking.

Through the show led Frauke Ludowig, presenter of the RTL programme "Explosiv", again and again kindly interrupted by the asides of Mirco Nontschew, entertainer from the "RTL Saturday Night". Numerous musical interludes, beginning with the ones of "Glashaus", always ensured a good atmosphere in the hall and were a good frame for the award.

Most of the awarded NEOs were named by a prominent jury, though it does not neccessarily make a name for itself in the sphere of the Internet.

The Special Award for great contribution to the new media went to Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg, deputizing for his team, with which he had created the music compression standard MPEG3 (short: MP3). This price was presented by Dr. Christoph-E. Palmer, minister of state of Baden-Württemberg.

The price for the best Online advertising went to the ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, commented by them in the speech of thanks with not having expecting to win this price with RTL and VIVA belonging to the sponsors and jury members. In the background could the laudator of the Award be seen, the voice of "Robert T-Online".

As best sports site on the net was the one of Formula 1 racing driver Michael Schuhmacher elected. The price for this was taken by Kai Ebel, presenter of the Formular 1 broadcast of RTL. The site of the soap "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten" ("Good times, bad times") was winner of the award for the best series site. The heavy weight "NEO" was presented to three actors of the series who all reacted indifferent towards the winning of the price and at the same time announced the (already happened) relaunch of the site. Both sites are btw. designed and supervised by RTL News Media, as is well known presented as member of the jury by their manager Dr. Thomas Hesse.

The group Glashaus was for this evening not only engaged as live act but also won the award in the area "best music site".

Radio on the Internet, the most popular website here is the "Chart Radio".

"Der Schuh des Manituh" is not only one of the most successful films in German cinemas but also the winner of the NEO for the best film site.

"geizkragen.de" got the public price for the most popular website, presented by Heidi Klum. Geizkragen.de surprised with the announcement that "much is to be expected" and meant with this the television. This made the laudator ask spontaneously whether the "dot.com-Domain is already reserved".

Electronic postcards can be sent most innovative at "edgar.de" and for this it gave the second public NEO of the evening.

A flat after-taste remains for exactly these two awards, though, because in the participation terms under point 17/5, paragraph 5, sentence 3 it is written as follows:

"The organisator reserves for himself to change the result when the vote results aren't a good advertisement."

Unfortunately we won't ever experience whether the winning sites made it to the top because of the participiants or because of effectiveness. We hope for the former!

A winner for the offered Smart wasn't drawn on this event, we wait impatiently for the naming of the lucky one.

More than words speak our further pictures of the event for themselves:

Amiga Arena: interview with Heinrich Tillack (AStarC)
New PD or shareware games can be found more and more seldom on the Aminet. The more pleasing it is that with "AStarC" a clone of the Arcade classic "Star Castle" by Cinematronics released in the year 1980 gives a welcome change! Heinrich Tillack, the developer, answered the questions of the Amiga Arena. (ps) (Translation: wk)

AmigaNCP 2.2
AmigaNCP is an implementation of the Psion link protocol which is e.g. built into the Psion S3/S3a/S3C and Psion S5 palmtop's ROM. It's main purpose is to provide vice-versa nfs-like file access. AmigaNCP features:

  • -- the "amigancp.library" providing all the network I/O functions.
  • -- the AmigaNCP-FileSystem providing transparent access to Psion files from the AmigaDOS environment. Includes transparent charset translation feature and possibility to store icons on the Amiga side for full workbench integration.
  • -- the AmigaNCP-FileServer providing transparent access to Amiga files from the Psion side with optional on-the-fly character conversion.
  • -- a print server allowing to print directly from your Psion to a printer connected to your Amiga.
  • -- full developer documentation and associated material to faciliate NCP services from within your own applications.
AmigaNCP requires:
  • -- AmigaOS 2.04 or better (localization supported).
  • -- the IBM-PC version of the 3-Link cable.
Changes from Release 2.1 to 2.2
  • -- Amiga to Psion clipboard transfer now working (S5/EPOC32 mode only)
  • -- fixed ACTION_SET_DATE and ACTION_SET_PROTECT for S5/EPOC32 mode
New releases will be put on AmiNet. Also, you might directly visit the support site:

WWW: http://www.vapor.com/
FTP: ftp.vapor.com, /pub/amigancp/

There is also a support mailing list for AmigaNCP. To subscribe, write to

amigancp-request@vapor.com

and put "SUBSCRIBE" in the mail body. Put "HELP" in the mail body to get full instructions on how to use the list server.

=== Bug reports: ===

Please report any bugs via E-Mail to amigancp-bugs@vapor.com. Please enclose a detailed description of the bug and the bug generation procedure, together with a description of both your AmigaOS and Psion setup. (ps)

Complete documentation of FinalBASIC available
Mr. B.B.C. wrote:
Just in time befor the new year I may announce that the documentation of FinalBASIC is finally completed. FinalBASIC is once again a BASIC dialect. But the special about it is the fact that it is developed as OpenSource and allows easy platform independant programming. With this it will be in strong competition with Java though its capabilitites are comparatively limited.

Because of the conception can FinalBASIC deliver a quite usable performance and could one day shake off Java. FinalBASIC, too, bases on compact bytecode files that can additionally be compiled to machine code programs, though, then being platform dependant, of course.

FinalBASIC is especially oriented towards client operating systems on slow computers. Therefore could also "exotics" like AmigaOS get new software.

Under www.finalbasic.org you can get a complete documentation of the bytecode in its current state.

The first version of FinalBASIC is a more primitive console version for Linux that already offers mouse support, graphics and sound. Later on a complex GUI development shall be added that moves FinalBASIC, apart from many direct hardware resp. memory accesses, to the squad of the professional developing tools.

The project still needs capable C programming people under Linux, but people interested in porting the language may also already register. All information can be found on the website. (ps) (Translation: wk)

AMCLUST: To the AMIGA community
Dear AMIGA community,

in the coming year the AMCLUST (Amiga Club Steinfurt, Germany) celebrates its 15th year. When I founded the club with two friends in September 1987 I wouldn't have thought that we would still stick with our "old" AMIGA 15 years later. And I am not alone, even if the number of members has decreased rapidly in the last years. Remaining is the "hard core" for which it's worth to steer the AMCLUST towards its 20th year.

With Christoph "Chriskay" Kirsch and Marco Wilka we have sadly lost two very good programmers last year, both have stopped their work on AMIGA projects (DataM-II, CROSS) and have switched to Linux.

On the other side we still have very active developers with Christian Effenberger and Guido Mersmann and some optimism is certainly justified.

In any case we will celebrate the 15th year of the AMCLUST, how and when is not decided yet, but we are already making plans.

Without the AMIGA community the AMCLUST certainly wouldn't be existing anymore, so a wholehearted thank you to all of you out there. A special thanks to Petra Struck and her team for the first-class amiga-news.de.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, we'll see, read and hear us in the new year...

PPClib.emu V0.9 available on Aminet
The PPClibemu is an emulation of the ppc.library and of the PowerUp kernel under WarpOS. The author of this emulation is called Frank Wille.

Changes since the last Aminet-release (v0.8d):
  • Three environment variables from ENV:ppclibemu will be recognized: IgnoreNOCACHEM68K, Debug, NoFreePatch and NoELFPatch (set != 0 to activate).
  • Library init swaps to an own 16K stack, to prevent problems with limited ramlib stack size.
  • Fixed bugs in __floatdidf, __floatdisf, __floatunsdidf and PPCDivs64/PPCDivs64p/__divdi3.
  • PPCGetTaskAttr() supports more tags: PPCTASKTAG_NAME, PRIORITY, STACKSIZE, INPUTHANDLE, OUTPUTHANDLE, ERRORHANDLE, ELFOBJECT.
  • New utility "ppclibemu_install" to load library into memory, replaces LoadSeg.
  • PPCCreateTask() behaves like exec.library's CreateTask() now.
  • PPCMsgPort is more similar to a real MsgPort.
  • PPC task termination routine will no longer free all memory.

A new udpate of the graphics adventure engine "Inga" is available on the Inga homepage (title link), from now on. The following has changed:
  • The sound plugin now enables voice and sound output via AHI.
  • RAM cache system reworked.
  • CLI programs can be executed with the "Extern" command.
  • Single character animations are only loaded if required.
  • Animations now appear as fast as if the engine would run at 20 fps (no frames skipped)
  • The scroll text in sequences now also moves with constant speed, independant of the actual number of fps.
  • No more mouse pointer in sequences, anymore.
  • Characters can be displayed that far on top of the screen, that e.g. only the feet are visible (this would have caused graphic erros in the past).
  • Running characters will reach their target point accurate on pixel (previously only roughly).
  • Animated objects can be displayed as still picture, whereas the single picture to be viewed can be set using Inga-Skript (see compendium under "Objekt-Standbild").
  • Objects "bound" to the mouse pointer are now displayed along with thier animation.
  • PlugIn system reworked (safer now).
  • PlugIns can be disabled by thier options (tooltypes).
  • Miscelleanous little bugs fixed.
So, only audio CD support is still missing, now. (ps) (Translation: mj)

PC-WELT: Beware of Exploding CDs
The article of "PC-Welt" (German computer magazine) reports that CD-ROMs starting from 48x speed under certain circumstances get in that much strain that these explode inside the drive.
This also happened to the St. Andrews University in Edinburgh, England. Read the University's advices on this subject: Exploding CDs?. (ps) (Translation: mj)

XAD Unpacks ZIP Archives For VirusChecker To Test
For quite some time, VirusChecker has been unable to unpack and virustest any ZIP archives. I have now managed to unpack .zip archives quite nicely with Dirks XAD shareware package. Please remember to support all our excellent Amiga programmers, even if their particular program has gone from shareware to freeware. You may not realize what a God-send they are, until something goes wrong. Thanks!

These directions will always be available on the VirusChecker links page.
  • a) get the XAD package (remember this is shareware)
  • b) install xadmaster.library and accompaning files
  • c) place the c: directory files in c:
there will be a file called 'c:xadunfile'
  • d) start VirusChecker-II and go to the prefs
  • e) add/edit for ZIP:
    Name: ZIP
    Offset: 0
    Data: PK
    Command: c:xadunfile "%s" "%s"
  • f) save your settings, and you will be finished
(ps)
