Announcement: new online magazine - GetBoinged
There had been a change at the head of the AMIGA online magazine "NoCover". With a new chief editor and new ideas we want to look into a better future. For this several preparations had taken place so that our plan can be put into effect.

The first step was the name change from "NoCover" into "GetBoinged". The second step will follow in the next few days when our official homepage will go online under "www.getboinged.de". All further details can be read then there.

With the "GetBoinged" magazine we want to go another way than other AMIGA online magazines, here at "GetBoinged" you'll only read facts and nothing else that may possibly be released someday in the future. Furthermore we refer to already existing and usable hardware. There will definitely be no reports about the alternative operating system MorphOS.

Because only a small number of users is participating we'll only come up with specially chosen rubrics to offer a quite filled magazine despite this.

Point: new users
To secure our surviving you will be able to receive the "GetBoinged" magazine not only via the Aminet or various AMIGA CD-ROMs. Owners and buyers of Windows systems will be pleased as our magazine will be placed on several CD-ROMs of "Windows" magazines, too. The CD-ROM subscription of the "GetBoinged" respectively the once "NoCover" will be discontinued because of this step.

With kind regards,
Your "GetBoinged" editorial staff

Emulator: New WinUAE clipboard utility
There's now an improved clipboard utility (download updated clipboard utility for 0.8.22R1) for WinUAE to exchange data between Windows and AmigaOS. It works now with YAM, Editpad and everything that uses several hunks on the Amiga side.

The related Readme has been updated, too. The most important:
In YAM you choose the wanted block and press the winuaeclip hotkey (CTRL+c is default). The YAM message No area marked can be ignored, everything had been done correctly. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Combined player/decoder/encoder GUI for .ogg files
Carsten Siegner wrote:
Today I have finished the combined Ogg GUI for player/decoder/encoder. With this you can set up nearly everything in the programs you want to. Among other things the conversion of .ogg files to .wav files, encoding of AIFF, AIFF/c and WAV to Ogg files. You can enter additional information about the song in the Ogg file, too, like date, genre, track number, name of the song, artist, comment and serial number. Besides, you can set the audio quality of the Ogg file from 0 to 10.

This GUI can be obtained directly from me via email. The GUI has to be installed in the same directory where the Ogg player and Ogg encoder are placed. In addition you need a CLI program called "requeststring". But this is included in the archive I send as it is freeware, too. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Start menu: AmiStart version 0.63 and new website
AMIGAplus wrote:
Darius Brewka has published the new version 0.63 of AmiStart. AmiStart is a Windows like start menu with quick-launchbar, drag&drop-support and a flexible graphical surface but also allows the transparency, rounded edges, background-textures and much more. In the new version AmiStart offers also the so called shape-layer which are flexible and programmable skins for controlling external applications like ARexx. The shape-layer of Songplayer is an example.

Besides this a new website of AmiStart has gone online which is hosted by GFX-BASE. (ps) (Translation: dr)

We're Being Watched - Scientific Paper on the Computer Scene!

This has to do with an English language 23 page scientific document from George Borzyskowsky of Perth University, a document which is concerned with the subjects of `The Hacker Scene' and associated cultural art forms. The PDF (title link) is an interesting read and offers food for thought, that here a person standing entirely outside the computer scene tries to analyze it. For his research the scientist used old Aminet CDs and editions of Amiga demo scene diskmags, such as RAW and Grapevine.

Along with the presentation of the latest version of the astronomy program "Digital Almanac III" there will be something completely new: The introduction of a new chess program for Amiga, named "AmiChessNG".

Recent specifications of the chess program:
  • requires OS 3.5+, MC68020 and some MB RAM
  • nice and functional MUI interface.
  • based on GNUChess 5.04 (newest version).
  • changeable figure design using skins.
  • figure control with drag&drop.
  • load and save the games or configurations in PGN or EPD format (standard format).
  • adjustment of the game strength by deepness of the search (measured by moves) or by time (seconds per move).

Merlancia Clarifies Question on Legal Status

Over the last 4 years, I have visited a number of European Amiga shows. The pictures that I've taken at those shows have until now been stowed away in a dark and largely unknown corner of cyberspace, where only relatively few people have actually seen them.

WWW browser: Path-Amiga V0.6
Alexander Weber is currently programming a new WWW browser for Amiga systems. He writes on his web site:

"Path-Amiga is my attempt to write a web browser. It isn't very usable yet, but that will hopefully change soon.

I started with this project somewhen in the second half of 2001, because I wanted to learn to write AmigaOS programs with multiple threads. After I had a program that could open and close some windows, I thought I could perhaps make a web browser out of this, just as a challenge. And the result is this."

The browser runs from AmigaOS V3.5.

Ein Liker (ANF)

Music: Tim Wright on the Web (Psygnosis' domestic composer)
Ein Liker writes:
it is not news in the original sense, still I regard the link interesting enough :)

Tim Wright, the famous domestic composer of Psygnosis, former Amiga games forge with titles the likes of 'Shadow of the Beast', who are now an inhouse team at Sony, has for some time now had his personal domicil under www.coldstorage.org.uk.

There you can find, besides 9 MP3s (a.o.t. two revamped songs from Wipeout, which btw were created using Bars&Pipes on an Amiga), also the two original tunes from the graphics classic 'AGONY', which in this form never managed it into the game, incl. interesting background stories. Additionally there are also the original modules from 'Shadow of the Beast II' and 'SotB III' (the music from 'Shadow of the Beast I' was done by Richard Joseph).

And finally you may contact Tim Wright directly, via eMail and forum, and maybe motivate him to produce further mixes of his old Amiga songs. (sd) (Translation: cb)

AROS - The Amiga Research OS (ANF)

AROS: Boot menu, font prefs for Zune
AROS have been mentioned in a news item at OSNews.

Sebastian Heutling implemented an intuition-based boot menu on AROS/x86 native. You can now choose to boot with or without executing the startup-sequence. The plans for this menu also include enabling HIDD switching at boot time.

Georg Steger fixed some text formatting bugs in graphics.library. He also renamed con-handler to con.handler to be consistent, and implemented eac_MatchString/MatchFunc in ExAll (DOS). He added an assign HOME: in AROS/linux to point to the current user's home directory.

Adam Chodorowski started porting the Font Prefs to Zune. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Audio: Ogg-Vorbis encoder/decoder for Amiga
On August, 14th 2002 had the first stand-alone encoder/decoder for the new audio media format "Ogg-Vorbis" been released. This media format was until recently only implemented in the program "Lame". Now you can also listen directly to the Ogg-Vorbis files. The only requirement is a full AHI installation. The processor power needed is very high, probably higher than for MP3.

There's an 060 and a MOS version of both the encoder and the decoder. Next to one of these you need the ixemul.library. Advantage of the new format is the better sound quality at the same bit rate than with MP3. Furthermore it can encode/decode Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Statement by Bernd Meyer regarding the upcoming AmithlonXL package
According to Bernd Meyer it is unclear to him for now whether the yesterday by VMC on amiga-news.de announced AmithlonXL is just an "add on" CD similar to the Elbox Multimedia CD or in fact a full emulator package.

In case that it should be a full emulator package, Bernd Meyer points out in his statement that VMC/Haage&Partner wouldn't have any license for the distribution of those parts of Amithlon that are basing on his work (e.g. optimized Jit), furtheron both sides don't have any license by Amiga Inc. for the distribution of the needed Kickstart/Workbench files.

Additionally he won't make future updates meant for users of the original Amithlon available for an AmithlonXL package.

Editorial comment:
We all cannot judge which of both sides (Bernd Meyer vs. VMC/H&P) is right or wrong here resp. respectively which of the sides is misinterpreting the concluded contracts. In any case it is clear that there are obviously two very different points of view existing. We ask therefore our readers to be very objective in possible comments and to do without any recriminations and insults.

Here the complete statement:

              Regarding so-called "AmithlonXL"
              ================================

* I have absolutely no knowledge of this "product" beyond that which is
  publicly available on Amiga news sites.

* I am not in any way involved with this "product".

* At the current time, it is unclear (to me at least) whether this is
  supposed to be an add-on for existing Amithlon users (akin to the
  Elbox "Multimedia CD", simply offering a collection of new drivers),
  or whether it is meant to be something including emulator executable
  and ROM files.

* If it is just a collection of drivers, I have no problem with it.
  About bloody time, I'd say.

* If, however, someone is planning to distribute my IP (as contained in the
  emulator executable), I'd strongly advise to reconsider, as neither
  Harald Frank nor Haage&Partner have any license to do so. Furthermore,
  to the best of my knowledge, neither of those parties have a license
  from Amiga Inc for the distribution of kickstart images.

* The announcements on www.amiga-news.de and www.ann.lu also talked about
  the demo machine being equipped with a Dual Head Matrox card. I sincerely
  hope that this is not an indication that my multi-head capable
  gfx driver for Amithlon is considered or presented as part of
  "AmithlonXL", as the license attached to that driver quite clearly
  prohibits it.

* Let me also reiterate that of the contents of the amithlon_contrib*
  packages released by me, ONLY the parts under the GPL are available
  for inclusion with any Harald Frank or H&P product, and that inclusion
  of those parts would require the strict adherence to the licensing
  terms of the GPL.

* Obviously, I won't be supporting an "AmithlonXL" which violates my
  intellectual property rights in any way. This would certainly include making
  sure that the proprietary parts of any further contrib packages I release
  for the users of the original Amithlon would not work with such an
  "AmithlonXL". Personally, I despise crap like that, but what can I do?

* I would finally like to ask everyone to recognize that at the current
  time, to the best of my knowledge "AmithlonXL" is purely a Harald
  Frank idea --- I have yet to see a single word about it from Haage&Partner.
  So please don't abuse H&P over something they, for all I know, might not
  even know about.

       Bernd Meyer,

       Main Amithlon programmer

AmithlonXL world premiere at O.A.S.E.2 event in Graz
The O.A.S.E.2 event, which will be held this weekend in Graz, will see the first public demonstration of AmithlonXL components. Some of the parts shown would regularly be first available only with the release of the announced OS4 operating system.

The new stuff demonstrated there will include audio drivers for SBLive, TerraTec Solo1, TerraTec 512i, CMedia and many many others. However, because of the short time we had, we were unable to get all the hardware to demonstrate all new audio drivers.

The network connection will be established through a RealTek 100Mbit card controlled by the brand new TCP/IP stack RoadShow from well known Olaf Barthel. The features of RoadShow will include great services like PPPoE, firewall and extended routing possibilities.

The system will be presented by Mr. Schober on his AthlonXP 1800. This machine will be equipped with SoundBlasterLive, RealTek 100Mbit network adapter and Matrox DualHead graphics card.

If possible, some benchmarks with the new FFS2 file sytem will be made, but if time should prove to be too short for those, we will deliver their results on our Amithlon product home page later.

More information about AmithlonXL and AmigaOS XL Updates will be available shortly on the usual web sites of our distributor Haage&Partner. Naturally these will also contain information about pricing and availability.

Guido Mersmann auf Amithlon-ML

Tool: MMKeyboard 2.0 for Amiga and Amithlon
Guido Mersmann has just uploaded version 2.20 of MMKeyboard for Amiga and Amithlon systems to Aminet. Normaly it will take a few days until the upload apears. Please send questions, suggestions, bugreports and of course keyboard profiles to Guido Mersmann.

Some details of MMKeyboard:
You like those Windows keyboards with many additional tool buttons for EMail, WWW, music and so on? You want to use a wireless keyboard? You don't want to buy expensive hardware that only supports the standard keys and leaving the others unused? Then you found the right archive! For a few bucks you'll get a selfmade hardware that uses everything!

MMKeyboard allows you to use a Windows keyboard as Amiga keyboard. In addition to that it's possible to launch programs via the multimedia buttons.

No driver problems like on the PC! One little commodity enables all available non standard keys on any keyboard! Even future keyboards are working!

Start your music player by pressing the play button on your keyboard. Eject your CDROM by pressing the eject button, or open a Shell in the same way! Now it's possible to execute any tool without qualifier, because the keys are unknown to the system! Of course it's possible to use qualifiers to be more flexible!

In addition to that there are additional features like a real hardware password with optional Amiga GUI, full reset handler support and much more! (ps)

Elbox: Mediator PCI USB drivers for Poseidon stack
Elbox Computer is pleased to announce that its drivers to PCI USB cards in the Mediator busboard operate under the Poseidon USB stack.

These drivers have been prepared by Elbox programmers as a result of co-operation started a few weeks ago by Chris Hodges, author of the Poseidon stack.

As the Poseidon stack is already supported by authors of third-party commercial software, we have decided that releasing another, our own, USB stack for Amiga under such circumstances would mean doubling effort of Amiga programmers.

We are sure that high-quality software included in the Poseidon stack package and our hardware-optimised drivers resulting in high performance achieved by PCI USB cards in Mediator will satisfy even the most demanding users.

The unregistered, time-limited version of the Poseidon USB stack will be available in the Mediator Multimedia CD. Registration of the Poseidon stack for Mediator users will be provided by Chris Hodges.

About Poseidon:
The Poseidon USB Stack is a software solution that unleashes the possibilities of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and the devices with USB interface, ranging from mice, keyboards, tablets, joysticks, printers, scanners, webcams, digicams, flash card readers, zip drives, floppy disk drives, harddisks, memory sticks, ethernet adapters, scanners and audio adapters to less common things like power supplies, GPS location devices or finger print readers. It is intended to be a solution for all systems. For more info about Poseidon stack please visit Chris Hodges' website.

About Mediator:
The Mediator PCI busboard line is designed so as to enable expanding the Amiga computers with a wide range of standard PCI cards like Graphic cards, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network cards, Modem cards, ISDN cards, USB and SCSI cards, Sound cards and Multimedia cards: TV tuner and MPEG-2 hardware decoders. Expanding the Amiga with the Mediator PCI busboard opens the way to employing the power of the latest PowerPC G3/G4 processors in Amiga, around which SharkPPC and SharkPPC+ cards are based. For more info about Mediator please visit Elbox website. (ps)

Thendic France: Post A-Expo Notes

1. Pricing for the Pegasos and Betatester
The Pegasos mainboard with 600 Mhz G3 (which is upgradeable AND scalable) will be sold to end-users for 560 Euros (no VAT) from Thendic-France or our Distributors/Resellers. Our prices to Resellers and Distributors are of course better and are based on volume. They are in business too. We need to support them and we will.
The G4 upgrade (800Mhz) can be purchased for less than 200 Euros and you will be able to do this well before the end of the year -- if you want (see on an earlier thread here for a discussion about this). You will see basic models of the Pegasos for less than 800 Euros (including tax and taking all the different country VATs into consideration) as GGS Data in Sweden is now offering and Vesalia will soon.

2. MorphOS
MorphOS gets better daily and we will delivered Betatester machines 127-133 this week. Betatester machines remain 1000 Euros because of the extras that come with it - the smart card reader, the wireless camera, and the DataPlay module - depending on what the individual Betatester is working on. Betatesters also get successively upgraded (as required/desired) to each version of the G4 and have FTP access to the latest ROM. The Betatester becomes the development machine for the eclipsis. The first peripherals will be distributed in Frankfurt at Betatester II on 12 October.

3. Linux
Further, every version of Linux for the PPC known has been installed and works fine on the Pegasos. We have been especially amazed by Mac-on-Linux. Sitting next to a G4 iMac you cannot tell the difference between the machines while running the same applications.

4. Show/Demonstration Schedule and Updates
a. For the Finnish Amiga Users Group the following individuals will be present:
  • Gerald Carda (bPlan)
  • Ralph Schmidt (bPlan)
  • Rakesh Raghoebardayal (Thendic)
  • Sharwin Raghoebardayal (Thendic)
  • Teemu Suikki (Finnish MorphOS Core Developer)
  • Harry Sintonen (Finnish MorphOS Core Developer)
We will also have other Finnish Betatesters/Pegasos owners present.
b. Thendic/bplan will be out in force for the WOA Show in Brentwood, Essex, UK on 2 November.
c. A Pegasos Show will be held in Lodz, Poland on 16 November. Please refer to www.pegasos.pl for details as they become available.
d. A Pegasos Show also be held in Moscow. A date has not been set. You will be able to see information on www.amiga.org.ru.

If you want to hold a Pegasos show/demo please send us an email. We will figure out a way to support you. There are Pegasos demos being planned/scheduled in nearly every weekend until the big show in Aachen in December.

5. Un grand MERCI!
The A-Expo was extremely well organized. We were very pleased to be involved. Congratulations to the A-Expo Team! We will have our pictures from the event posted to www.thendic-france.com shortly.

Sincerely,
Raquel and Bill (ps)

Amiga - Mein Leben - Ask Petro...
Patric Klöter wrote:
For the memoirs of Petro Tyschtschenko is a chapter planned where Amiga fans can ask Petro questions and he will answer them.

I do not think, that there is anybody who does not know who Petro is. But for the ones who never heared of him here a short history of his Amiga curriculum vitae:

"Petro was working since October 1982 at the Commodore Büromaschinen GmbH and has seen the birth of the Amiga in 1985. After the bankruptcy of Commodore 1994 he was chief of Amiga Technologies, a branch of ESCOM, which bought all rights of Commodore and the Amiga in April 1995. As ESCOM also got into bankruptcy 1996 Petro tried everything from the survival of the Amiga and became chief of Amiga International, Inc. after Gateway 2000 bought the rights in 1997. He put himself in to the further development of the AmigaOS, then released in version 3.5. In April 2001 he retired officially from AMIGA Inc.. He has not left for all instances and is taking a boo on Amiga events to talk with Amiga fans who were customers and are now friends."

Now I call the Community to ask Petro interesting questions dealing with his life and the Amiga. Sure there are people who want to know some special things about Petro. Now here is the opportunity for that.

I will create a catalogue of questions for Petro he will answer and it will be a special chapter in the book. This will be unique in an autobiography.

I will administrate these questions I want to make sure you note this: Please send the question to me NOT personally to Petro. The address is mail@commodore-amiga.de.

I will forward the questions to Petro. Please for now only one question per person. I do not know how many question are taken up into the book, so maybe not all question are answered.

Petro has been informed about this event and so this is not a joke.

I thank you in advance for your interest and wait for your questions. (ps) (Translation: gf)

AmiATLAS 6 Update Info
Gerd Frank writes:
It really lasts a very long time, but now there are some updates to AmiATLAS 6 available. Sorry for the really long delay, but we had some strange personal and technical problems over the last months...

A few users already got several of the older update archives some months ago, others obviously nothing. So now within several eMails (spreaded over some days to avoid overfilled eMail accounts) you will receive all the available updates again. But remember, only for registered users and some selected beta testers with an NDA release!

The distribution will be done in several packed archives in LHA format. There are normally no installation scripts included, it is enough to unpack the archives and copy the directories directly into your installation of AmiATLAS 6. If you are not sure with such procedures, just send an eMail!

You should receive the following updates:

- AmigaAUTO v1.06
- AmigaKONTO v1.06
- AmiATLAS v6.38 (ony an internal but stable release!!!)

- map denmark v6.50
- map benelux v6.50
- map germany_special v6.50

All these maps were done by Manfred Rohde in many many sacrifying hours of absolutely hard work. Kind regards to him and thank you very much!!!

Possible a new enhanced map for Italy, done by Fabio Miscia, will follow in the near future too! But again please be patient...

To the programs I can only say these are mainly bug fixed localized versions, the main changes and enhancements are done inside and by now are mostly not visible to the user. This will follow with the updates in the future. So please don't be disappointed or even expect miracles.

In future releases the following maps won't be supported or enhanced anymore, because it needs too much time to do all the work on nearly the same maps for one country. It's even possible some maps will only be renamed so don't panic!

  • austria (these three will be joined to one "austria")
  • austria_plus (map with highest capacity, choosable with)
  • austria_special (the travelguide and a map of europe)
  • belgium (included in the new BeNeLux)
  • D_CH_A (old stuff...)
  • germany (now only "germany_special" is supported,)
  • germany_global (same conditions as austria and switzerland)
  • germany_small (dito)
  • netherlands (included in the new BeNeLux)
  • switzerland (these three will be joined to one "switzerland")
  • switzerland_special (map with highest capacity, choosable with)
  • switzerland_standard (the travelguide and a map of europe)

What we will do with the maps in "germany_prof" was still not decided finally.

Within the travel guides and hotel guides are very extensive changes in progress, but because of the amount of data of course it needs some more time. In the future you can use a database as known from similar products on other systems. Btw AmigaGuide files wont be used so extensive in the future as it is currently done, but you will get powerful possibilities e.g. for searching. By request you can get the actual beta release and have some fun...

The tools AmiAVON and AmigaPLZ should follow soon (I hope so!). The problem is I have to recode these tools now already four times because of technical problems with the old hardware.

And don't forget:

Anybody who had already done own enhancements on towns, streets or other things, surely knows about the long time to wait for new updates. In most cases this is really underestimated.

Last not least a request to all users:

The whole project AmiATLAS lives from the contributions of its users. A short eMail with new ideas or bug reports would be really great and of course very useful for future releases of this product! Thank you!!!

I would note this because from hundreds of users there are only about ten enthusiastic guys with ideas and bug reports from time to time, what I think is very a pity.

Best regards,
Gerd Frank
AmiATLAS Development Team (ps)

Meeting: Amiga Inside Part II

Matthias M. reports: Amiga Inside - Part II is finished and we would like to thank all the visitors and our sponsors. It was once again a very successful party, even if the number of Amigas has declined. On all three days we tinkered, screwed, socketed and explained.

The use of projectors was a complete success. Many films were shown and so the nights passed without much sleep. Steffen Häuser of Hyperion came and showed us the current version of Quake 2, and it made a very good impression in terms of playability and stability, and the networking functions were able to be extensively tested. The weather also cooperated and we were able to have a barbecue on Sunday evening.

A few pictures have been uploaded to the homepage, and more will follow. I hope we all get to do it again next year! -greetings, Matthias

Interview with Thomas Frieden: OS4 questions and answers
Korodny writes: A few weeks ago, the amiga-news.de community collected a bunch of questions related to OS4 and forwarded them to Thomas Frieden, in the hope that he may answer some of them.

Guess what? Not only did he answer all of them, he even answered them in English, for you poor souls outside of Germany ;-). The interview in German.

1. ExecSG, 68k-Emulator, WarpUP

Amiga-News: Please describe the Memory-Protection implementation and how this works with pre-OS4 software?

Thomas Frieden: Free memory will always be protected against reading or writing. Some critical memory areas, like the base page (address 0) will also be protected, to allow software to find NULL pointer bugs (which is an extremely common form of bugs).

Old software (68k programs that are emulated, and old PPC software) will run in a different MMU setup. This will not protect anything else but the stuff mentioned above, so even if the program behaves badly, it will be allowed to do so.

New software, OTOH, will have to be written in such a way that memory protection will work. Initially, the protection will be minimal (see above), but with later revisions, we're moving to completely isolated address spaces.

Exec SG already provides for this possibility.

Amiga-News: How is Virtual Memory implemented? What has been changed in the implementation compared to your original plans?

Thomas Frieden: The original concept was similar to VMM, i.e. a partition mapped into memory, leaving the original memory system untouched. However, the new plan is to include a virtual addressing scheme at the core. This will allow lots of additional features such a different memory allocation schemes, automatic stack elargement etc.

Amiga-News: I don't like Virtual Memory, can I disable it?

Thomas Frieden: You can turn of swapping of memory to disk, yes. However, there's actually no need to do that. It seems a lot of people are judging virtual memory by it's implementation in Windows. Windows uses it's swapping feature even though there's physical memory available.

OS4 will not do that. Even if you have swapping turned on, you will not notice it if enough memory is available. However, when you would normally get a requester telling you that you ran out of memory, the pager will kick in and free some memory. That's all. As long as you do not use enormous amounts of memory, the pager will not become active, and no swapping will occur.

Amiga-News: Are there up-to-date Benchmarks from Petunia (68k emulator)?

Thomas Frieden: You will have to check that out on the authors website...

Amiga-News: Is Petunia completed now (all CPU commands, FPU, MMU emulation)?

Thomas Frieden: FPU emulation is being finalised right now. MMU emulation is not planned and is really of quite limited interest.

Amiga-News: Is Petunia already integrated with Exec SG?

Thomas Frieden: No, not yet. The integration of emulation into OS4 is one of the reason why we are going for a virtual addressing scheme.

The emulation integration concept is already designed by an expert in the field and is about to be implemented.

Amiga-News: When will there be a new scheduler (as already announced)?

Thomas Frieden: Hmm, I don't think this was announced.

ExecSG uses the same scheduling scheme as the old Exec, that's a prioritized round-robin scheme. It's one of the most efficient schedulers, and most of all, it allows near-realtime behavior. This near-realtime behavior is a critical point in the whole Amiga design: it ensures the responsiveness that we all like about the Amiga. Other schedulers have been available for the Amiga in the past, but while for example 'nice' type scheduling is suited for applications, it isn't suited for drivers.

What we *will* add in future version is real threading: Right now, the only possibility for threads is to use multiple tasks, but this limits the usability (especially since an application consisting of 30 tasks will receive a lot more time compared to an application consisting of just one task).

Amiga-News: When will the GCC cross compiler be available for 68k Amigas (as a Linux cross compiler already exists)?

Thomas Frieden: We're currently working on that, with low priority, though. The compiler is also not available publically, because we want to be able to change certain aspects of the ABI on short notice yet.

Amiga-News: Will there be "Gurus" again?

Thomas Frieden: Probably.

Amiga-News: How much faster will existing PPC applications be under OS4?

Thomas Frieden: We don't have numbers yet but the PPC is already a lot faster when the 68k CPU is turned off. Context-switches will also be substantially faster.

Considering the fact that key components of the OS will be PPC native, we can expect a nice performance gain.

Amiga-News: Will games like WipeOut 2097 or Heretic II run under OS4?

Thomas Frieden: We want to have full WarpUp compatibility, so theoretically, they should work. It has to be tested, though.

Hyperion will remaster all of its titles for OS 4 for superior performance.

Amiga-News: In theory, it should be possible to catch direct access to custom chips registers and emulate the custom chips using UAE code, right?

Thomas Frieden: In theory, yes. However, it's doubtful that this is actually something that would be beneficial. UAE will do a good job emulating old stuff, and with UAE, you'll have full control over the environment, i.e. the CPU used. As most programs that directly access the chipset are unlikely to work reliably in an environment so completely different from old Amigas, I'd say that UAE is by far the better solution.

Amiga-News: Will there be something like "PuhDerBaer" für OS4?

Thomas Frieden: Uh, WTF is PuhDerBaer?

2. Boot process, File systems, AmigaOne BIOS

Amiga-News: Will the annoying "Disk not validated"-Problem be cured with the new implementation of FFS?

Thomas Frieden: No.

Amiga-News: Can I press both mouse buttons to enter the early startup menu?

Thomas Frieden: Yes.

Amiga-News: What will be in the early startup menu?

Thomas Frieden: It will remain the same for now, maybe some additional options (for selecting the kernel configuration...)

Amiga-News: Early startup menu is in no way related to the motherboard BIOS, correct?

Thomas Frieden: Yes.

Amiga-News: What about filesystems? Can I connect my Classic Amiga HD to the A1 and access the contents? Will we still have an RDB or will we get that "trendy" MBR?

Thomas Frieden: The disk format will not change. Definitely no MBR.

Amiga-News: Will it be possible to boot from external sources?

Thomas Frieden: This might be possible, but is not planned right now.

Amiga-News: What will be the boot time?

Thomas Frieden: Similar to what it is now, hopefully faster.

Amiga-News: What will be the floppy disk format? Will the AmigaOne be able to read my 880k Amiga disks?

Thomas Frieden: No, that's a limitation of the floppy controller used in the A1. The Amiga has much more control over it's floppy, which is not available in non-custom controllers.

Amiga-News: Will OS4 automatically recognise if a floppy disk gets inserted?

Thomas Frieden: As this is not yet implemented, I can't really say. However, floppy support is becoming more and more unimportant right now, so I don't think too much energy will be wasted on such a dead medium.

Amiga-News: How will a Classic Amiga boot OS4? A classic Amiga can't boot from a PPC filesystem, how will that problem be solved?

Thomas Frieden: As there's still a 68k on the classic (which can't be removed due to some signals that are still generated in the 68k), the first boot wil always be done using the 68k. There's no reason why the file system structure can't be used from 68k and PPC alike...

3. Supported Hardware, USB, Firewire

Amiga-News: What hardware will definately be supported by OS4 (Gfx,Sound,NICs,USB,etc. ...)?

Thomas Frieden: All of the above.

Amiga-News: What USB drivers will be available?

Thomas Frieden: Currently, the most important things to cover are keyboards, mice, and HUBs. Other drivers will follow later. Third parties like IoSpirit already have access to our USB stack and will provide for support for devices such as scanners.

Amiga-News: What will the USB stack look like? Will it have a GUI?

Thomas Frieden: With a limited GUI.

Amiga-News: Will OS4's USB stack be compatible with "Poseidon"?

Thomas Frieden: Doubtful.

Amiga-News: What about drivers for printers, scanner, CD-ROM etc.?

Thomas Frieden: This will remain in the hands of third parties for now with the exception of the CD-ROM drivers.

Amiga-News: Are you working on a driver for PCI-Firewire?

Thomas Frieden: No. Firewire is low priority. It's scope is rather limited, therefore it's not considered an essential feature. Support will probably follow later, but it's our firm believe that right now, other stuff is far more important (USB, IDE, SCSI).

Amiga-News: Do you have access to documentation for the 'All In Wonder' Radeon 7500 and 8500 too?

Thomas Frieden: The chips on these cards are practically the same as on the other variants.

Amiga-News: If yes will there be drivers supporting the additional functionality of these cards?

Thomas Frieden: No, at least not initially.

Amiga-News: Would there be AHI support for the audio functionality of these cards?

Thomas Frieden: See above.

Amiga-News: Will 3D drivers for ATi Radeon 7500 be shipped with OS4.0?

Thomas Frieden: Not initially. The idea is to release OS 4 for the Cyberstorm PPC first where there is no need for such a driver (These boards are AGP only, AFAIK).

Amiga-News: Will 3D drivers for ATi Radeon 8500 ship with OS4.0?

Thomas Frieden: This will need to wait for the new version of Warp3D.

Amiga-News: Does OS4 run on the Pegasos?

Thomas Frieden: We don't have a Pegasos. Theoretically it would be very easy to get OS 4 to run on the Pegasos considering the very limited technical differences between the AmigaOne and the Pegasos.

Amiga-News: What about hardware companies supporting OS4 (wrt scanners, printers)?

Thomas Frieden: None confirmed yet. However, we've been approached by hardware manufactureres about support for OS4. I can't tell any details yet, though.

Amiga-News: Will the BlizzardPPC be supported?

Thomas Frieden: Most likely.

Amiga-News: Will the BlizzardVision / CyberVisionPPC be supported?

Thomas Frieden: Yes.

4. Other OS4 modules

Amiga-News: What's the finalised feature list for OS4?

Thomas Frieden: See Amiga's web page.

Amiga-News: What new features will Intuition have?

Thomas Frieden: I'm sorry, but that question is too complex to answer within the scope of this questionnaire.

Amiga-News: How much of the new features is finished already?

Thomas Frieden: The new intuition is about 95 % finished, last I heard...

Amiga-News: What's IBrowse's status?

Thomas Frieden: Ibrowse 2.3 has been in beta-testing for a while now.

Amiga-News: What's the status of MUI 4.0?

Thomas Frieden: We have built a complete version of MUI using the latest source-code.

Amiga-News: Will there be a new Ed?

Thomas Frieden: No, no new Ed. There are people that use vi, and there are people that use emacs. I use GoldEd. Most people have their favorite editor already. The system's editor is meant for small changes, like changing startup-sequence... most user will still want to go on using their existing editor, though...

Amiga-News: How much is DOpus Magellan integrated? Will it be just an external Tool?

Thomas Frieden: That has not yet been decided.

Amiga-News: What new shell commands will be available?

Thomas Frieden: There will be a new shell, yes. This isn't really the place to start listing individual shell commands.

Amiga-News: What's ARexx's future?

Thomas Frieden: Arexx will be preserved but we are looking at alternatives as a replacement down the line.

Amiga-News: Will there be multi-user support? Password protection?

Thomas Frieden: No, at least not in the initial version.

Amiga-News: Will Screen-Dragging be possible (again)?

Thomas Frieden: Such a feature is technically "challenging" on anything but the classic hardware. If you run OS4 on a Amiga native mode, it will be possible. But different resolutions at the same time on a standard graphics chip are impossible.

Amiga-News: Will OS4 stay video compatible? Will it still be possible to display the Workbench on a TV (as long as the gfx card has TV-out)?

Thomas Frieden: If the driver supports it, yes. After all, this is just a matter of the driver.

Amiga-News: How secure is the TCP stack? What about Firewall software?

Thomas Frieden: I think a firewall is integrated. There's also the possibility for IP forwarding, which requires some firewall functionality...

Amiga-News: Will openening a Workbench window (and rendering the icons) still block the rest of the system?

Thomas Frieden: Sorry, don't know. AFAIK, this wasn't even the case on the latest Workbench. but I could be mistaken...

5. Misc. Stuff

Amiga-News: Could you explain the various delays? What difficulties did you encounter? What unexpected problems had to be solved?

Thomas Frieden: It would take us too far to discuss all the reasons for the delays here. The main reason is that we decided to fold most if not all of the functionality originally planned for OS 4.2 into OS 4.0. Plus there's the fact that we needed to develop the AmigaOne Bios after the original development company (completely unrelated to the Amiga market) failed to come up with the goods.

Amiga-News: What will we have to pay fo OS4? Will OS3.5/3.9 owners get a discount?

Thomas Frieden: Pricing has yet to be decided. No price-cuts are planned for OS 3.5 and 3.9 buyers. OS 4.0 is the most comprehensive OS update since 2.x to 3.0 and the targetmarket is quite small. This leaves little room for discounts.

Amiga-News: How can I become beta tester?

Thomas Frieden: Beta-testing will initially be carried out by selected and trusted individuals who are known to the 30+ OS 4 developers.

Amiga-News: Will there be real manuals as PDF,HTML and AmigaGuide documents?

Thomas Frieden: Time permitting.

Amiga-News: Who will handle customer support (bug repots, requests)?

Thomas Frieden: This has yet to be finalised. Let's start with actually releasing OS 4.

Amiga-News: What are the long term plans (AmigaOS5)? Will AmigaOS become CPU independant or run on multiple CPUs (IA32, IA64, MIPS, SPARC...)?

Thomas Frieden: Sorry, you'll have to ask Amiga about this. Hyperion is currently only interested in moving OS 4 forward and ensuring its survival on a new and modern hardware platform. Basically, the system has been "cleaned" a bit of CPU dependencies.

However, I don't really see a good chance to run on little endian CPUs... this doesn't only affect the system, but all user code as well, and I would definitely think that a lot of code will fail. Apart from that, chances to run on IA64 are much smaller than anything else (32 bit systems do no port well to 64 bit systems, at least not when you want to use the extra 32 bits...)

Overall, all code working on a system wich also includes little endian CPUs will have to take care about the endian. This is not a problem in itself, but I'm willing to predict that a lot of people will not care about this. They will code for one specific CPU, and this will lead to a real mess.

Amiga-News: What are the chances to get JAVA for AmigaOS?

Thomas Frieden: Better than before when AmigaDE can run hosted on OS 4.x.

Amiga-News: When will Quake2 be available for AmigaOS?

Thomas Frieden: Hopefully soon.

Amiga-News: Will there be Easter Eggs?

Thomas Frieden: If I'd tell you, I'd spoil the fun ;) (ps)

Event: Pegasos and AmigaOne at O.A.S.E.
For the first time in Austria, Pegasos and AmigaOne G3SE will be shown at next weekend's O.A.S.E. in Graz.

The Pegasos will be demontrated by DYXS GmbH, a Thendic France partner.

The current AmigaOne G3SE Board has arrived at the organisers PointDesign already in Rev. B, so at least they'll be able to show a current version of the BIOS.

Besides MorphOS on the Pegasos, parts of AmigaOS 4 will be demonstrated. Furthermore the USB cards Thylacine and Highway will be presented with USB devices. You will also be able to see the Norway Ethernet module, Mirage 4000T, and much more.

For the first time in Austria: Linux on Playstation 2, as well as 2 Gamecubes with current games for the gamers.

The O.A.S.E. Open Amiga Southeast Europe Show will take place on 14th and 15th September 2002 in the Hotel Europa in Graz, Austria. Further information about this event can be found on the O.A.S.E. web site. (ps) (Translation: cb)

Tool: TWINKICK-GENERATOR / Amiga1000 Kickdisk with OS1.3 and OS3.1
This tool from Andre Pfeiffer generates a Kickstart-Disk for the A1000-Amiga with OS1.3 and OS3.1 on 1 Disk.

Download: twinkick.lha

The tool requires a disk with two files:
  • OS1.3 (V34.5) named "KICK13.ROM" (A500/A1000/A2000)
  • OS3.1 (V40.063) named "KICK31.ROM" (A500/A600/A2000)
  • (You can generate this files with the "GRABKICK"-Tool from Aminet)
  • Don't forget to rename the files!
Execute the tool "TKG.EXE" and follow the instructions. That's all! Turn on your A1000 and insert your new Kickstart, during the boot process you will see a short instruction.

IMPORTANT:
This Kickstart requires an A1000 with 2MB or more FastMem located at $200000 (works with AutoConfig and NonAutoConfig-Expansions). (Does not work with more than one external MemoryExpansion!)

EXTRAS:
  • OS3.1 works with NonAutoConfigMemory
  • OS1.3 includes a "Game-Mode", better PAL-Check, Virus-Checker and some bugfixes
(ps)

WinUAE.net (ANF)

Emulator: WinUAE 0.8.22 Release 1 (08.09.2002)
Since yesterday, the Amiga emulator WinUAE 0.8.22 Release 1 by Toni Wilen for Win95, Win98, WinME, Win2K and WinXP has been available in the download area of the WinUAE home page. (Unfortunately, winuae.net currently seems to be down, please write any known mirror addresses into the comments!).

The following changes have been implemented:

  • UAE 0.8.22 merge, bumped version number (but most changes were already included in R4)
  • 68000 CHK-instruction fix (Days of Thunder) and exception 3 handling update
  • real 68000 prefetch emulation ("100 most remembered C64 games" and more)
  • some custom chipset fixes (sprite-playfield collisions, graphics corruption)
  • keyboard fix (some key presses were missed when pressing multiple keys)
  • A1000 emulation fixes
  • AVIOutput update (Sane)
  • input-tab updates
  • vsync works properly in interlaced screen modes
  • sound updates/changes (DirectSound, uses UAE timing in non-JIT/vsync modes and more...)
  • filesystem bug fixes
  • CD32 pad numeric keypad emulation works again
  • fixed joystick bugs in compatibility mode
  • fast RAM state save fix
  • bsdsocket fix (Stephan Riedelbeck)
  • disk emulation fixes
New features:
  • full harddisk image support (hdtoolbox, RDB, custom filesystems, SFS and PFS3 confirmed working)
  • uaescsi.device improvements, confirmed compatible with CacheCDFS, AmiCDFS and AsimCDFS (disk change support added and use of direct scsi-mode is not needed anymore)
  • Action Replay 1 support (but breakpoints don't work)
  • CPU idle (tries to detect use of STOP-instruction, may not be complatible with all Amiga software..)
  • floppy speed slider is back
  • new AHI code and driver (Bernd Roesch)
  • Amiga <> Windows clipboard support (Bernd Roesch)
  • on the fly switching between OpenGL and DirectDraw mode
  • on the fly switching between vsync and non-vsync mode
  • compressed Kickstart ROM image support
  • build-in screenshot function, shortcut key: F11 (Sane)
  • experimental (and much slower) cycle-exact cpu and blitter emulation mode.
    WARNING: requires at least 50%+ more cpu power than "regular" mode.
    Athlon XP/Pentium IV + DDR/RAMBUS RAM highly recommended!
    WARNING2: Frameskip must be set to 1.
    WARNING3: very experimental, timing is quite far from perfection.
  • wkeykill.dll support (disables Windows-keys)
  • OpenGL scanline brightness slider added
  • and more..

CD32-Allianz web site temporarily inaccessible
As some might already have noticed, the home page of the CD32-Allianz is currently inaccessible. The reason for this is not that we are giving up, but rather that we have exceeded our server space, and have thus been shut down (Arcor has halved the web space to 25 MB). Some cover scans have now been deleted, and we hope to get activated again soon. Of course there will be another announcement on amiga-news.de when that happens! Regarding the increasing need for web space we will then think of a solution. (ps) (Translation: cb)

AmigaOSXL: Experieces Report V1.36
Dietmar Knoll writes:
In my report, I describe the experiences I have made with the H&P Big-Tower. There have been numerous updates since the latest news message before the summer break of amiga-news.de.

The chapter "AmigaXL" has been extended by the "Commands and Programs" for this emulator and the "Settings" section has been retouched again.

For Amithlon, several changes have been made in the chapter "Installation" and new "Commands and Patches" from the latest Amithlon-Contrib3 archive have been added in the chapter "Amithlon".

Today I have finished version 1.0 of the GoodyBox. Since the first version 5 icons and 3 mountlists for Amithlon and a script for AC97Mixer have been added. Furthermore, I have reworked the "Readme" file nearly completely. If someone else can offer suggestions or files for the GoodyBox, he or she can write them to me. (ps)

Amiga, Inc.: Bill McEwen's September 2002 Executive Update
Bill's latest update touches on a plethora of topics including the Sacremento show, the Amiga club, the AmigaOne, PDA/Cellphones, Bernie Meyer's product and the possibility of new product(s) from Amiga:

September 5, 2002 - From the desk of Bill McEwen
Greetings to one and all:

I would first like to thank all of those that I had the chance to meet in Sacramento. While a short trip it was indeed great fun and real delight meeting with all of you and hearing not only the encouraging words, but also sharing in your concerns, desires, and dreams. We are looking forward to deliver on what we discussed with you.

When we purchased Amiga from Gateway there were many out there who said that we would fail. There were many out there who have worked against our efforts, and others that have misrepresented fact and manipulated privileged information in order to further their obviously self serving goals. There have been those who have wronged us, and caused us damage.

But, guess what? We are still here! We are still delivering! We are going to stay here! Amiga is about people, technology, excellence, we are a most tenacious people, and we have the community to prove it. Has it always gone according to plan? no. Have we made some adjustments to the plan? yes. Are we delivering on the plan? yes. Will we allow others to dictate our future? Absolutely not. Period..

Because of you, the Amiga dream lives, because of you, Amiga's are still being used throughout the world performing amazing tasks and activities, and because of you, we are still here and moving forward.

Amiga is a giant resting for the day of the fight, and gaining strength quietly, for, as we embark on this mission together, nothing will tear us apart.

Thank you once again for supporting us, and showing to the world that what was begun in 1985 was truly only the beginning.

Bill McEwen, and the Amiga Team

Amiga Club Members:

I would also like to take a minute and say a special howdy to all of the club members. It is really encouraging to see all of the activity and input from you with regards to the shirt design and name for the club. The "I am Amiga" name did not go over as well as I had thought, but in the next couple of weeks (after we get the ok from those who already have the name that was selected) we will all have the name and shirt design with which an be happy and proud to wear. Each member will receive their first newsletter in the next two weeks, and there will be all sorts of great announcements and information e, so look forward to it in your inbox.

As a reminder we will be having a new drawing for an Amiga Enabled Cell Phone in September, and we would encourage those of you who have not joined yet, to get in here and do so. We have many plans and activities coming up for the club, and once again for only $ 50.00 you will receive the newsletter, Shirt and other special promotions. The lifetime membership offer has ended, but we would encourage you to be a part of something really exciting as the members will continue to receive special discounts and exclusive programs directed at the membership. We will honor the "$50.00 off" certificate for the next members who join through the end of September, at which point we will hold the draw for the new cell phone.

September 1st, 2002:

As mentioned in Sacramento at AmiWest, we had offered amnesty to those people/companies/entities who have knowingly stolen our IP and used it for their own gains, or who have shipped product knowing that they are illegal had until the end of August in order for them to comply and to get legal.

Now, I am not going to mention names nor am I going to get into a public discourse on what is happening.. But legal action has begun. In the next two weeks papers will be served. We will target one violator at a time with the hope that we will send a very clear signal that this is very serious, will not be permitted and will be stopped.

This is a private action between Amiga Inc, and those who wish to continue in this practice. While we announced publicly our intentions, the actions will be private. I am sure that everyone can understand this and I hope will support this.

AmigaOne Update:

Well, the amazing team of Eyetech and Hyperion are doing a great job. Many of you already have in your possession the AmigaOne boards, and many more of you have seen the hardware in action. This is indeed another major leap forward as we near the release of the new hardware and OS 4.0. Eyetech and Alan Redhouse have been doing a great job of keeping everyone informed of the progress, and we look forward to the products release.

AmigaOS 4.0:

Hyperion and the team are making amazing strides here. The screen shots that we all see and the updates from Ben and the people working on it shows great progress. I know that they are working hard with regard to the integration into the AmigaOne, and I for one am looking forward to seeing it all working together, and from what I hear we are not too far off from making that happen. With this stated we have received some more shots of the interface from the OS 4.0 team. You can see the new AmiDock screenshots here.

PDA/Cell Phone Update:

As mentioned in Sacramento the Amiga Anywhere Content Engine and associated content will be shipping on the new Sendo™ SmartPhone™ when it ships. Now, to answer the many e-mails that I have received about the Sendo phone…. I do not know when the device will ship commercially; it is out of our hands with regard to when they will have the phone available. I will tell you that before the end of the year we will be making at least two more Cell Phone announcements and at least two more PDA announcements.

We are really starting to move on getting these business deals done and there will be many more opportunities for our developers to create new products for these cutting edge devices.

A Possible New Product Offering - Let me know your thoughts:

In recent dealings with one of our hardware OEM's they offered an opportunity. This opportunity is for excellent laptop hardware at excellent prices. They would be dual boot systems with Linux/UAE, and Bernie Meyers product (formally known as Amithlon) pre-loaded on the device. Here is a sample of some of the pricing that you could expect, all prices quoted are in US$:

Processor RAM Display Hard Drive Optical media Software Price
Intel® 1.2GHz Celeron™ 256MB 15.0" TFT 20GB DVD Linux/UAE Ami* $999
Intel® 1.6GHz Pentium® 4 256MB 15.0" XGA TFT 20GB DVD/CDRW Combo Linux/UAE Ami* $1579
Intel® 1.6GHz Pentium® 4 256MB SXGA TFT 30GB DVD/CDRW Combo Linux/UAE Ami* $1679

These examples are notebook computers. There are other options available, but I am trying to find out how many of you would be interested in purchasing these through your local Amiga dealer. Let us know by sending an e-mail to interested@amiga.com. There are also desktops and other configurations but I think that a notebook Amiga would be compelling. Let us know.

The Product Formally Know as Amithlo*:

As mentioned before Bernie Meyers has a wonderful product, and we expected it to be out by now. However there have been a couple of delays, none of these are engineering driven, that has delayed the release. I can tell you that the new product will be out very soon, and will offer some new requested features, and from what I understand is really going to knock your socks off. We will have an update concerning the timing of this release and the new name very shortly. So contrary to what you may have heard, it will be available soon.

Developers:

This message is an update for you. You have created some of the greatest content that the world has ever known. Your skill sets and your tenacity have overwhelmed many, and everyday you become more and more important to the future.

If you have been sitting on the sidelines I encourage you to jump in. We are getting requests from many of our OEM partners with regard to content that they are looking for on their devices.

While it has been a slow start (as is always the case in developing a market), this next quarter is going to see major movement, and distribution. We have many programs ready to take place for the Holiday season and we want you to be a part of it. So I encourage you to jump in make contact with us. Join us in creating the future.

In closing I wish to thank each and every member of the Amiga family for their support and good wishes in this amazing journey that we have embarked upon together. We are closer today than we were yesterday to the dreams and goals of Amiga. Tomorrow we will be closer again, and soon we can all share in the rewards.

Sincerely,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team
(ps)

Tool: SRename Version 3.5.0 Beta 5
Constantinos Nicolakakis has released probably the last beta version of SRename 3.5.0. SRename is a program which has some more functions as the common 'rename'. Here are some features:

  • Can use wildcards.
  • Total control over recursion, the user can set the level of recursion, starting level of recursion and can even specify a different pattern for entering directories.
  • Can renumber filename sequences without the user having to care for the renumber order or filename clashes because these are taken care of automatically.
  • Can perform numbering of filename sequences.
  • Can modify the filename's comment and transfer the filename to the comment or the reverse.
  • Allows the user to build his/her own functions by providing a command set of selectors and actions that can be combined in many ways.
  • The number of actions that can be executed in one go is only limited by the command line length.
  • It is interface compatible with the OS Rename command.
  • Efficient memory usage.

Poseidon & Norway Updates Version 1.28 available (Update)
There is a new version V1.28 of the Poseidon USB Stack available from my website (title link), aswell as an updated driver for the Norway Ethernet Addon which sits ontop of the Highway.

There's now a VHI driver for the Pencam and compatible webcams. However, to work 100% correctly, you probably need version VHI Studio 5.7 which is scheduled for release next Monday.

There are also MorphOS PPC native binaries, but I doubt anyone will use them yet ;) (also there still seems to be a problem with the ELF version of the main library).

Finally, I want you to encourage to send in an email, whenever you might need help or just have a good idea of improvement (except nagging for the HID class ;) ).

Update:
PS: Don't be worried about the registration form included starting with this release and the "demo version" restrictions: The Highway and Subway boards come with an OEM licence and you do NOT have to register Poseidon.

This is only for third party hardware drivers which do not have a licence. In this case, the user has to buy a keyfile, if he wants to make use of Poseidon. (ps)

System Monitor: Sysmon V1.20a

On the 2nd of September Etienne Vogt released Version 1.20a of his shell-based System Monitor. Check the ReadMe Text for more information about the program. Since version 1.20 the following changes have been made:

  • 'UnMount ALL' will now ignore ENV: as well as RAM: if mounted as a separate handler. This allows late shutdown code to access global environment variables in all cases and also avoids problems with Env-Handlers that have broken ACTION_DIE support.
  • Added FRAGS option to the Sysmon monitor Show Memory command.

AmIDE goes Open-Source (GPL)
Not long ago the source codes of AmIDE which is an integrated developing environment for the Amiga have been published by Jens Langner under GPL (open-source) and thus is available to everybody under the title link.

Jens has published the source codes because he cannot develop further AmIDE and thus hopes to encourage a team of developers for the sourceforge project.

The source texts have been completely reworked for the GPL release and have been uploaded to the CVS of the sourceforge server in this way that they immediatly can be compiled with SAS/C.

Every interested developer who wants to directly take part in AmIDE is supposed to contact Jens Langner and will then get the writing access to the CVS sources. The old homepage will be updated later and an explicit developer mailing list will be also created then. (ps) (Translation: dr)

On public demand: Download "Shanghai Dragon" AGA version
On public demand Christian Rosentreter has published the AGA version of "Shanghai Dragon".

Download: tksd.lha

Please note that this version is not being further developed anymore, and is really not comparable to the coming CGX version. The AGA version only shows the framework, the CGX version will offer better graphics and a much enhanced functional range.

Please also note that the AGA version cannot be redirected to gfx card screens properly, and also that there is no documentation available.

There is a screen shot at the ZENZER-2dNOW-Forum. Further details (about the future CGX version) can be gleaned from the interview with Christian Rosentreter in AMIGA ARENA. You can also find some information about the planned game on the Amiga Future page. However, the CGX version will not be released "in a week" - this was a little misunderstanding. A release in late autumn is more probable. (ps) (Translation: cb)

GPatch Version 3 completed
The 68k version 3 of the patch system GPatch has finally been completed and put on Aminet.

There have been many improvements over the previous version: New search algorithms, new coding methods, easier execution of the patch. And for those who don't know it yet: GPatch is the only program of its kind with the ability to combine any number of difference data in one patch file in order to automatically update different older versions of a program to the newest one.

And - to demonstrate that the program is really worthy of a news item - the readme contains a comparison of different update variants of a real program (AWeb 3.2 and 3.3 to 3.4). Just briefly the result: The classic approach with scompare takes 1:28 minutes to create 277258 bytes (compressed), GCompare 3 on the other hand takes 0:59 minutes to create 163593 bytes. Amiga Speed with first Voodoo4 and new Voodoo5 reviews
The gfx board Voodoo4 has been tested regarding its speed by Amiga Speed and surprises with its good performance. It even beats the Voodoo5 in most cases, which can probably be attributed to the chip design and the better drivers. However, the specifics have yet to be worked out. Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

It's been a quiet month. Apparently, work continues on Amiga ONE and
OS 4.0 with quiet determination. At least I hope so, and there's
really no reason to think otherwise. However, it's now been a very
long wait. Fortunately, the Amiga community is used to long waits. I
believe the community as a whole still feels this one will turn out
differently from all the others. I know I still do. But it does feel
frighteningly familiar, doesn't it?
Quiet or not we have several interesting items for you to read this
time. Most interesting to me is the situation with Pegasos and Morph
OS. I am constantly amazed that supposed promoters of the Amiga do
things that, if successful, can only hurt the company. In this case,
damaging Amiga's ability to control its OS. The small companies that
continually do these things seem to have no concern that Amiga is
itself small, and damage to its intellectual property could cause
severe difficulties or even put them out of business. And the small
companies that do this seldom get anything genuinely useful on the
market.
My personal opinion is that both products have about as much chance
for real success as (to use an old American expression) "a snowball in
Hell". But they are causing already limited resources to be wasted by
Amiga Inc. in defending their property.
Ah well, bad judgement takes funny forms sometimes.
Most of our other stories show the good side of the Amiga community,
and I enjoyed some of the news very much.
We hope you enjoy this issue also.

AmigaFest 2002, The Show Within a Show at Computerfest®

12 August, 2002

For the fourth year in a row, AmiTech-Dayton, Amiga Computer Users
Group, is sponsoring AmigaFest, a show within a show at Computerfest®.
The purpose of AmigaFest is to provide a concentration of Amiga
oriented vendors and exhibitors in the show to provide improved
support for the Amiga Community. If you are a current or former Amiga
user, or are just curious about the platform, stop by AmigaFest 2002
and find out what is currently going on with Amiga. There are many new
developments on the horizon and we will have some available for
demonstration or sale at the show.

The AmigaFest 2002 area will include a Seminar/Presentation section,
that will be showing off the capabilities of the Amiga system,
including alternative operating systems that are currently in
development for the Amiga community. Presentations will be going on
continuously throughout the show. In addition there will be an Amiga
museum displaying nearly every model of the Amiga that was produced.

One of the advantages of the Amiga platform is its extremely
efficient operating system that has provided pre-emptive multi-tasking
since its introduction in 1985. The next version of the Amiga OS will
make full use of the PowerPC CPU line. A new generation of Amiga
hardware is on the horizon that will back up the efficiency of the
operating system with modern computing horsepower. Amiga OS Emulators
are also currently available, and will be demonstrated at AmigaFest
2002, bringing Amiga efficiency to X86-based systems bypassing
Windows. Drop by and find out about all the upcoming developments.

As in years past we will be holding several demos that should be of
interest to any present, past or future Amiga user. We will have demos
of MorphOS installed on a PPC equipped Amiga 1200, Amithlon and
AmigaXL installed on a PC, and using digital cameras on your Amiga.
Other demos are in the works. Stop by our booths for a complete
schedule of events.

We are expecting several exhibitors for this year's AmigaFest. They
include Extreme Computing, developers of a new line of X86-based
computers optimized to run new Amiga OS emulation systems; Compuquick
Multi Media Center; FWD Computing; Mr. Hardware; E. S. Productions; G
and G Publications, publishers of The New Amigans magazine; the Amiga
Cafe; AmiTech Dayton and Grasshopper LLC, developer of Pagestream, the
premier desk top publishing program for Amiga, now also available for
Macintosh and Windows.

Additionally, on Saturday night after the show, we have arranged to
have a gathering for a dinner and social get together for all Amigans.
Stop by the AmiTech-Dayton booth, pick up a flyer, and be sure to join
in the fun.

We think it's going to be an interesting and fun show. There are a
couple of definite advantages to having an Amiga Show in conjunction
with a show like Computerfest®. First of all it gives the Amiga user
access to a concentrated selection of Amiga gear, a lot of which will
be at special show prices. Secondly, it gives them unparalleled access
to a broad selection of general equipment that we all need and a
little shopping will find them at bargains beyond belief.

As always, we hope all Amigans will stop by and show their support.
Hope to see you there!

Amiga produced along with some of our members modified machines.

Plus, we will be having demos of the Pegasos, the Extreme machines,
Pagestream, Personal Paint, Photogenics, and Amicamedia that will be
going on constantly during the show. And as always, there is no charge
for these demos. Please check with the AmiTech table for a listing of
times and locations.

We will once again have a social gathering off site once the show
closes on Saturday. This year will will have door prizes for those
attending the gathering courtesy of our friends at Software Hut. Space
for this dinner is limited, so check with the AmiTech table for full
details.

Show hours are 9:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday and 10:00am to 4:00pm on
Sunday. Some vendors may not be able to stay for the full day on
Sunday, so come early! With over 30,000 attendees, the Dayton
ComputerFest¨ is one of the largest shows of its type in the United
States. And AmigaFest will be there for the fourth year in a row. Come
be a part of the excitement!

When & where

AONE Gothenburg 2002 Fall Event will take place on the 21st of
September, which is a Saturday. The event will last between 12 - 17
and the premises where we will hold the event is called Kajutan ("The
Cabin" in English).

For those who visited the AmiGBG 2002 fair earlier this year it will
be quite easy to find their way to Kajutan that is situated in Tolken,
that is the same building that we used when we arranged the fair. The
entrance to Kajutan is placed on the same side of the Tolken building
and we will set out direction signs so that it will be easy to find
your way.

Kajutan is often used for conferences and seminars and we think that
this is a suitable place to have this event since we will have a
number of lecturers present that will tell you all you want to know
about the Amiga One.

The new Amiga - AmigaOne

At this event, the first new Amiga computer in ten years will for the
first time be seen in Sweden.

We see this as a scandinavian kickoff for the new Amiga!

The name of this computer is AmigaOne (AONE). The first version has a
PowerPC G3 processor running at 600 MHz. This first board goes under
the name AmigaOneG3-SE and is at the moment shipped to a selected
group of developers/beta testers.

Two of these beta testers, Justin from Denmark and Ole-Egil from
Norway will visit us in Gothenburg, Sweden on the 21st of September to
demonstrate this new hardware that so many have waited so eagerly to
see. The computers that they bring to Gothenburg are their own
AmigaOne developer machines.

The AmigaOne machines that will be running during the day in
Gothenburg will have different versions of PowerPC Linux installed
(Debian and SuSe), as well as UAE Amiga Emulator (emulation of the
classic AmigaOS).

When the end user version of AmigaOne is ready for sale, it will be
bundled with the next generation AmigaOS, OS4. This Amiga operating
system is a modernized and rewritten OS for the PowerPC processor.
AmigaOS4 is still under development by Amiga Inc's partner Hyperion.

Whether we will have any news regarding OS4 at the event, we don't
know yet.

What will happen during the day?

During the day of the event, seminars around AmigaONE will be held.
Of course it will also be possible to ask questions about this new
Amiga and to see it in action!

We are very proud to announce that we will have Alan Redhouse from
english company Eyetech attending the showcase. Eyetech is the company
behind AmigaOne. We are also working on the possibility to have other
prominent guests with connections to AmigaOne and OS4 here at the
event, so stay tuned.

At this event we will also have a machine running Amiga DE. This is
because of the future development with DE being integrated into the
new AmigaOS. You'll get an opportunity to ask questions about DE and
to see how far the development process has proceeded.

More detailed information regarding seminars and lectures will be
available soon before the event, so hold on!

Getting the Pegasos Market Going!

This is a message for traditional ``Amiga Community'' Resellers...

Since our involvement and the earliest threats against MorphOS, we
have had German and European experts checking the applicable law. If
fact, in spite of the latest threats, we are looking forward to the
timely release of MorphOS.

A word about the past: the spirit of ``Amiga'' rose from the demise
of Commodore with what was an incredibly well designed and functional
operating system. It became one of the first examples of "forward
compatibility." A word about the present: MorphOS is ready to take the
first step to co-exist with this internationally appreciated example
of software engineering that has generated a distinctive Community of
Users, Developers and Resellers.

We would like to address our potential Resellers. What will be our
future relationship with you? Well, we tried one approach. It worked
for the Linux market, but not for your market. Nearly all of you
wanted the same thing - a Pegasos running MorphOS to test. You will
have that now. You can buy one this week or next month, or whenever
they want. There will be many available soon. You will find MorphOS
for the PPC is something new. Before, MorphOS was a kernel, which ran
on the PPC, but required AmigaOS files to be able to run Amiga
applications. Now it is different. MorphOS is the complete core of the
Pegasos and can function as a complete operating system. No additional
files are required to achieve this. To be completely clear, what
MorphOS is today is not what ``MorphOS'' was before (and what is still
available today online). MorphOS today is different. It is a great
accomplishment and a credit to Ralph Schmidt and his team to have
MorphOS where it is today, but that will not stop us from making it
better. You won't be wasting your time and effort when you begin to
sell these machines.

We have decided that while there was a Community suave enough to
handle the Pegasos and MorphOS as it was, the regular computer user
was not, and frankly initially, neither were the Resellers. Our
original concept did not work well. We had only one reseller in this
Community order ten boards until two weeks ago when we had three more
place orders (two of them for a very decent size), but this was slow
enough in coming that we understood we needed to take another
approach. We sent back their money or did not accept it. We had a bad
dream about an OS based website dedicated to The Best 100 Bug Fixes --
have you heard of that before? We woke up.

Ladies and Gentleman, we need to remember that the target is regular
computer users, who are ``new'' users and who represent new markets
for this Community. A little economic success could improve plenty of
things around here - for Developers, for Resellers, and ultimately for
Users themselves - so we decided MorphOS needed to be ready for
them.... and you. That is why there will be a few steps.

Step One: The ``Betatester'' with MorphOSv.90
Step Two: Pegasos with MorphOSv1.0
Step Three: The Pegasos Handheld with MorphOSv1.0+

But, in this post we will stick to our Resellers and our message to
them. We will come back to Developers and Team Betatester after this
weekend in Bordeaux at the SLACH PARTY. Later, we will describe in
detail our hardware plans here and all the peripherals we plan on
introducing. We have plenty of things to share and we will do it here
on www.morphos-news.de

The cost of the Pegasos will fall in the next production runs. We
will keep optimizing and as we do there will be more profit to carved
up. Right now, we are just spending money. Releasing a product with no
strings attached that is not ready for a ``regular computer user'' is
commercial suicide. We cannot afford to do that, but we need to begin
to cover our investment and we need to take a straight line to the
commercial /regular consumer release point. We need to get going!

So, here is our promise to our Resellers: we will have a product you
can release to ``regular computer users" in December. We intend to
fully support the computer show being planned in Aachen that month. We
will not only have an operating system to release, but a few
applications, including a game that will surprise even the normal
fans.

Just to make sure that is clear:

We will ship Pegasos boards to all Resellers by 2 December 2002, if
not before.

If you have comments or questions you can email us at
bbrv@thendic-france.com

We will also present our Pegasos Handheld Prototype in December!

Keep your eyes on the site for the latest updates!

Best regards,

Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck

{We don't often run stories on what are really non-Amiga items, but
we feel the Pegasos / Morph OS story should be covered because of the
potential impact on Amiga. Hence, we decided to use the preceding
story. However, it is very important to keep the legality of the
situation in mind. To that end, we run the following quotes from an
interview conducted by the Scandinavian Amiga magazine "Amitopia". You
can find the full interview at the "Amitopia" site, referenced below.
The interview actually consists of questions and answers from a
variety of dates. Brad}

29 July, 2002

I would start this interview, by asking if you see at MorphOS as a
illegal product?

Amiga INC. writes:

Our position is that the elements of MorphOS which allow it to
provide AmigaOS compatability have been illegally derived. These
either need to be removed or a licence obtained for them. I am afraid
I cannot say more than that due to advice from our lawyers.

Monday, April 29, 2002, 11:10:22 PM, I asked:

And finally...

But you should stop doing this.. Why cant Amiga go for the future,
show that you are strong? I know this is a marked {sic. perhaps he
meant to type "market". Brad} strategy to somewhat push MorphOS out.
Its like Lindows for the PC marked. Its a competitor to Windows, but
also RUN's Windows programs. You should start to think like an Amiga
user Bill. If you have full believe in your work, then drop the case
and go further. We all know you should have the right to use Amiga,
but MorphOS aint using Amigas name. I want both products on the
marked, it will be a colourfull marked and thats what we want, not
another Commodore keeping all secret and kinda forget what the
userbase want. Please clear things out for me?

Amiga INC. writes:

You do not understand the legal implications of what you say.
Whatever the merits or otherwise of MorphOS, they used illegally
obtained AmigaOS source code to develop their product. If Amiga Inc
does not defend that code, then we can lose all rights to it. We have
no choice BUT to prosecute anyone who dares to make use of Amiga code.

The MorphOS team knows this and has spent the last six months or so
trying to remove any code they have which was derived from AmigaOS.
However, our attorneys already have a copy of a MorphOS release where
via disassembly, you can prove that they did use the same source
routines as were in the AmigaOS source code that they had.

20 August, 2002

After more than a year of development and testing, the final version
of SoundFX 4.2 has finally been released!. WinUAE/AmigaXL/Amithlon
users can try the 060 version. It should run without any problems on
their systems. The list of new features and bugfixes is here. SoundFX
is a powerful sound-processing package for AmigaOS, developed by
Stefan Kost. For a shareware price it offers professional features,
many of which are quite unique on the Amiga. It is a real must for
every Amiga sound designer or music
producer.

SoundFX V4.2
Changes since the previous version

- Stable as never before.

- Extensively tested also on emulated systems: WinUAE, AmigaXL and
Amithlon.

NEW FEATURES

- Significant internal changes made in order to allow advanced
features (like realtime processing) in the future.

- The ARexx port has been completely rewritten. It is now almost 100%
faster.

- New operator: a 3-band parametric equalizer.

- Apart from whole samples, sample ranges can now be saved as well.

- All sample-windows have two new gadgets in the title bar. One hides
the window, the other displays the Sample Options local menu (useful
for people who do not have a 3-button mouse). These features require
Massimo Tantignone's titlebar.image.

- Now there are altogether three ways to hide the sample-window: the
'Box' button in the toolbar, the Hide gadget in the window title bar,
and the local menu.

- SoundFX can display "Tips of the Day" at startup. OS3.5+ (or an
older system with ClassAct installed) is recommended for this feature.

- You can get to SoundFX's homepage at www.sonicpulse.de and e-mail
the author directly from within the program: see the Help menu. This
feature requires openurl.library installed and configured properly.

- New About-window gives extensive information about the program and
the system. This feature requires Richard Koerber's identify.library.

- The quality of the Hall operator has been improved.

- New Utility menu with functions for manipulation with sample data
(sign and byte-order switching, channel interleaving and
deinterleaving).

- New functions for preference handling (see Prefs menu).

- When calculating the maximum sample volume (Amplify operator) a
progress-bar is now used, as this operation can take a long time with
large samples (like CD tracks).

SUPPORT

- There is a new bugtracker suite at http://www.sonicpulse.de/phpbt/
for reporting bugs and submitting feature requests.

- The HTML documentation has been extended and updated.

- Documentation now available also in PDF and PostScript formats.

IOUSB System 2.0 Update with OS 4 support

IOUSB, developed by IOSPIRIT, is a system for USB-device-drivers that
allows them to access USB stacks via a uniform API. Thus any driver
that builds upon it can theoretically be used with every USB-stack on
the AMIGA.

Apart from the already existing support for Poseidon (Highway/Subway,
MorphOS), support has been added for the Sirion-stack (Thylacine,
Highway/Subway) in cooperation with the AmigaOS 4.0 development team.
Thus it is now also possible to use devices covered by IOUSB with the
Thylacine USB-board and the upcoming AmigaOS 4.0.

The update to version 2.0 can be found on our download-page. It also
contains an update to version 1.1 of the iousbscanner.device fixing a
timing-problem with the Epson Perfection 1650.

Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Poseidon USB Stack is a software solution that unleashes the
possibilities of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and the devices with
USB interface, ranging from mice, keyboards, tablets, joysticks,
printers, scanners, webcams, digicams, flash card readers, zip drives,
floppy disk drives, harddisks, memory sticks, ethernet adapters,
scanners and audio adapters to less common things like power supplies,
GPS location devices or finger print readers. It is intended to be a
solution for all systems.
Requires: a compatible USB card
Big news
~~~~~~~~
V1.26:

- Mass storage fixed and extended.

- New USB Modem class.

- UPAR printer mountlist included.

V1.25:

- German manual and installer script

- Fixed the bugs in the installer script that would copy the UMSD
file to the wrong drawer (and without icon)

- New usb->serial converter class

- Mass storage now automounts

Changelog
~~~~~~~~~
poseidon.library 1.26
o On USB devices with multiple configurations, only the first one was
read due to me thinking that I would get all configurations
automatically. This is now fixed. Hey, it was the first time I came
across a device with multiple configs, so I couldn't test the code
before.
massstorage.class 1.11
o Added information messages on mounting (after three attempts :) ).
o Mounting now again uses lowcyl = 0. But therefore, detection of an
already mounted partition has been reduced to unit, device and
dostype. This means that no multiple partitions on a harddisk will be
mounted, but only the first one. I hope this is not a problem for most
of you.    (thanks to Jens & Jean-François).
o After mounting, a diskchange signal was sent. This is now fixed
(thanks to Jens).
o Added NSD and TD64 support. This means you now can uses harddisks
>4GB.
serialpl2303.class 1.3
o Fixed buffer management. Added EOF mode.
cdcacm.class 1.2
o Initial. Should support state reporting and EOF mode.
pencamtool
o Added UPTO option.
highwayusb.device 2.8
o Optimized copyloop a bit.
subwayusb.device 2.2
o Initial
serialpl2303.class 1.2
o Initial
bootkeyboard.class 1.6
o Now calls reset handlers of the keyboard.device on reset. This is
done in a tricky, but system-friendly way. If any reset handler is
found, the reset is delayed by 10 seconds (no way to find out, if the
reset handlers have finished).
massstorage.class 1.9
o Added 200ms delay for some strange devices before first
interaction. I hope this is enough for most drives.
o Added automounting capability for FAT95. Took me ages to get this
working. Sorry.
o Added experimental untested support for CB and CBI transport
protocols.
o Added special init sequence for eUSCSI bridges.
o Disabled internal retry mechanism for HDCMD_SCSI commands. Maybe
this fixes the disk changing bugs when using "+s" on FAT95.
o Fixed broken disk change detection. Sorry, just forgot some
paranthesis.
hub.class 1.14
o Changed the init sequence to be more error tolerant, adding several
retries
o Added locking mechanism (oops! how could I forget) of address 0 to
avoid confusion on the bus with multiple hubs connected to a hub at
the same time.
o Lots of little changes.
poseidon.library 1.25
o If SET_CONFIGURATION fails, the enumeration will now still proceed.
This seems to be the case with a few USB2.0 devices.
o Changed psdSpawnSubTask() to launch a process if started with dos
available.
o Misc little changes.
Software distribution via IOSPIRIT
IOSPIRIT, known worldwide for its high product quality and its
well-accepted service, is expanding its distribution activities. Thus
we are looking for interesting programs and projects, that lack a
distribution partner or that want to open up new market segments.
Distribution activities include the wide-spread mail-order
distribution and popular, modern Electronic Software Delivery (ESD),
where everything is handled digitally - from the customer's payment to
the product delivery. Besides we also offer support aids like
mailinglists and a FAQ-system.
Advertising (both banners and print), flyers and our presence at
exhibitions allows us to introduce the products distributed through us
to a broad public. Furthermore we already have a strong customerbase
within and outside Germany.
More general information and information about the advantages of our
distribution services can be found on the page "Distribution services"
under "Information" Don't hesitate to contact us directly, if you are
interested and want to learn more.
