Back to the Roots: Rat roasting
The back2roots.org server and the entire network cluster were offline two days caused by a rat that had been looking for a warm place to stay inside a transformator hut. The rat found a VERY warm place and an instant death as a kind of a barbecued rat.

For that server failure the BTTR team would like to apologize. The winuae.net and all other hosted sites were affected also. Now everything is okay again, the rat is cold and the server warm again.

If some mails during these days seem to be lost, please send them again. (nba) (Translation: ub)

Hardware-Hack: CD-writer in original A1200 case
Update (26.10.2012, cg): integrated entire article into news item during database migration

Amiga user Egon Kohlschütter has managed to fit both a CD-ROM and an IDE harddisk into the A1200's original case. The idea is to move the harddrive to the right of the case (to the position normally occupied by the internal disk drive) and put the CD-ROM to the left side of the case. The floppy drive had to be removed to gain the neccessary space (Egon uses an external drive now) and the case had to be slightly modified. This is what the end result looks like:

Fitting the CD-ROM drive

Get an internal CD-ROM drive (or even a CD-Writer!) targeted for Laptops - these are small enough to fit into the original case. Some devices that should work are:
  • TEAC CD-224E (CD-ROM)
  • TEAC CD-W24E (CD-Writer)

These drives use a special IDE connector called "Mini-IDE", so you'll have to find a suitable adaptor. These adaptors are usually called "Slimline adaptors" (Mini-IDE to IDE-40-pins). As these Laptop-CD-drives are usually jumpered as "Master" and the internal HD should be "Master" aswell, you should also get one of the myriad of A1200 IDE devices that enable you to connect up to four drives to your Amiga.

Obviously, you'll have to cut an opening into the case - a CD-ROM not accessible from the outside is not exactly useful ;-) This image demonstrates the exact position of the drive:

Some hints for the actual case modification:
  1. open the case, remove the RF shielding and position the CD-ROM
  2. The drive rests partly on the bottom half of the case
  3. use a pen to mark the area that has to be cut out
  4. use a dremel or a similar tool to remove the plastic
  5. Powerstrip is used to fix the drive at its new position.

Moving the harddrive to its new position

The harddrive will be put where the internal disk drive used to be. Remove the disk drive and make sure that the internal disk drive connector can not be shortened by accident (e.g. by putting an old IDE or floppy connector onto it).

The RF shielding may cause short circuits too - make sure that you either remove enough of it to avoid that or put some isolating material around the harddrive.

The floppy disk drive

When booting, the A1200 will spend a few seconds searching for the internal floppy disk drive. Additionally, Workbench might complain about the missing disk drive. Both problems can be easily solved by connecting pins #1 of the internal floppy disk drive connector with the pin below it. The boot process will be slightly faster after this modification.

But with these pins connected, your A1200 will not recognise external disk drives. Therefore Egon connected the pins using a switch: The switch is closed most of the time, but you can open it at any time (even if the machine is already up and running) to access external disk drives and close it again afterwards.

More pictures

Here are some more pictures showing various details of Egon's hack:

Additional notes

The scsi.device included with AmigaOS 3.0/3.1 is not able to handle ATAPI drives (like CD-ROM or CD-RW drives), so you'll have to use a replacement. AmigaOS 3.5+ comes with an updated scsi.device, another option would be the shareware IDEFix.

Egon equipped his A1200 with the CD-RW drive mentioned above. BurnIt does not have specific support for this particular drive, but the generic driver (No. 9) works fine.

If you did not connect the pins on the internal floppy disk drive connector as described above, Workbench may complain about the missing disk drive - OS 3.5+ users should deactivate drive "DF0:" in the Workbench preferences to avoid this.

Egon can be contacted at Egone@freenet.de. Please note that his English is (quoting Egon) "pretty poor", so you may contact us aswell, we'll forward your feedback to Egon. (cg) (Translation: cg)

New USB driver for Amithlon and OpenPCI
The ArakAttack demo version will be available within the next few days at http://www.vmc.de/Amithlon. The demo version is time limited and much slower than the full version.

What is ArakAttack?

ArakAttack is an USB driver packet that allows the usage of USB on any AmigaOS compatible system with PCI slots. ArakAttack isn't an USB stack, it's a driver packet for Chris Hodges great USB Stack Poseidon.

What are the features of ArakAttack?

  • Amithlon optimised version.
  • OpenPCI compatible version.
  • UHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
  • OHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
  • Unlimited number of USB controllers supported at the same time.
  • Unlimited number of parallel USB transfers garantees maximum performance.
  • Only one device with multiple units makes installation very easy.
  • Intelligent transfer descriptor caching mechanism.
  • Several user options allow an optimisation of resource management to the users requirements.
  • Full mem handler support. (Frees resources and caches if the system signals low system memory)
  • No HUB depth limits.
  • Separate time out handling for each USB request garantees the driver never freezes the USB stack or the system.
  • External interrupt fallback for systems with interrupt trouble.

What is also required to use ArakAttack?

The latest version of Chris Hodges' Poseidon USB stack.

In addition to that other components are required:

Amithlon:
powerpci.library - version 2.13 or better.

Amiga PCI / Pegasos:
openpci.library - version V1.20 or better.

Which USB Controller is required for ArakAttack?

Most of the current USB controllers are supported. Just take care it's UHCI, OHCI or EHCI compatible. Well, I don't think you'll find any other within the stores now.

Amithlon user may be happy to hear that on board USB controllers are working, too!

How can I register?

Well, currently the registration makes no sense, because ArakAttack is quite useless without a registered USB Stack.

If you own a Poseidon key feel free to register. Further information can be found in the manual.

PLEASE: Don't bother Chris Hodges with questions about registering Poseidon. He is very busy at the moment, so please keep quiet until the registration site will be up again. (snx)

Application Response Measurement 4.0 will be finalized shortly
The version 4.0 of the Application Response Measurement (ARM) standard developed within the OpenGroup will be finalized shortly.

This standard defines a C/C++ and Java API for instrumenting (distributed) applications. Most notably, with this standard programming language, process and host boundaries are not a restriction for transaction and sub-transaction measurements any more - resulting in a real end-to-end (business-) transaction measurement. For a detailed description of the ARM standard please read the document available on the OpenGroup site.

Together with IBM and HP, the tang-IT Consulting GmbH has led the development of this version 4.0 of the ARM standard. They are going to show their ARM 4.0-based product called "tang-IT ARM" at the LinuxWorld 2003 exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany from Oct. 27 to 29.

The main developers of *tang-IT ARM* have been knowning the Amiga platform from the beginning. Therefore they can imagine a port to either AmigaOS 3.x/4.0 or MorphOS if there is sufficient demand (>10) for such a product in this niche market. A port to AmigaOS or MorphOS could be available within a month and a developer license is about 200 Euro. (nba)

Alan Redhouse (Eyetech Group) has a regular column in the British Amiga magazine Total Amiga. In co-operation with "Total Amiga" makes the Amiga portal Amigaworld.net the past issues of this column available for all Internet users.

Excerpts taken from the explanations by Alan Redhouse:

  • The dual CPU cards will be produced from December on if there are enough requests. Because of the prices for fast G4 CPUs will a card with two 1.3 GHz G4 processors not be cheaper than appr. 600-700 British Pounds (ca. 860-1000 EUR, without taxes).
  • To bundle the restricted resources of Eyetech withdraws the company from the Amiga trading and concentrates on other business areas (AmigaOne production, "industrial markets").
  • Registered OS4 beta testers will receive a 10% price reduction when buying an AmigaOne.
  • Developers of drivers for the AmigaOne-Lite (RAID, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire) will receive the motherboard for free. Interested people please contact Eyetech.

Spam-protection: AntiSpam2 1.07
The anti-Spam software called "AntiSpam2" has got some new features e.g. a prefseditor and a remote-filter and is now principally useable for each Amiga mail program which is still supported. On the website you can now also find detailed explanations to the different configuration options which can be changed by the prefseditor from now on.

Because AntiSpam and the support tools all use the NewGUI system NewGUI is being installed automatically and maybe is being downloaded from the homepage during the installation. Because of that the installation should be done while you are online or NewGUI should be seperately installed before it.

The remote-filter allows you to delete mails still on the server (a hint for Web.de users: the Freemail Timelimit could cause some problems with the remote-filter). Deleting mails is being done during a second step. Of course this method is more unprecise than downloading the full mail with YAM first because only the header can be tested! (cg) (Translation: dr)

OASE Update: Premiere - MicroA1 G4 in Action! ATI Radeon & AmigaOS4!
See some premieres at the OASE - MicroA1 G4 in Action! ATI Radeon & AmigaOS4 on the AmigaOne!

A real world premiere is taking place at the O.A.S.E. (Open Amiga Southeast Europe) show having a working AmigaOne Lite, now renamed to MicroA1, on public display the first time ever.

The (preliminary) MicroA1 specs as follows:

# G4 7447 low power cpu up to 1.3 GHz (running 1.066 MHz at the show)
# Radeon 7000 graphics chip with 32 MB video RAM on board (2xAGP)
# 100MBit Ethernet
# 2x USB1.1
# Serial / Parallel ports
# UDMA 100 IDE Controller
# 1 PCI slot (incl. Riser for 90° adapter)
# mini-ITX form factor (170x170mm)

We will have Linux Debian running on the MicroA1 and we are pushing hard to get AmigaOS 4.0 running on the board until Saturday. Special thanks to Thomas Frieden for his ongoing work to make this possible.

The first time a Picasso96 Radeon driver will be shown on an AmigaOne under AmigaOS 4.0. Special thanks to Joshua B. Helm and Forefront Technologies.

AmigaOS 4.0 on the AmigaOne will also have working 3com ethernet drivers running thru the Roadshow TCP/IP stack and the Soundblaster Live! running a PowerPC native version of AHI.

AmigaOne XE G4/933MHz boards will be available at the show for a special OASE price of 849,- Euro (incl. 20% VAT). For current customers we will have live updates of their UBoot FlashROM chips.

For our MorphOS fans we will have two Pegasos machines at the show.

Another part of the show handles Retro Computing where Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computer will talk about the C= One. An actual version of the C= One board can be seen at the show.
With some luck, a working (!) C65 can also been seen there.

AmigaOne: AmigaOS 4 boots with ATI Radeon support
Forefront Technologies which are the developers of the ATI Radeon driver for AmigaOS 4.0 on "classic" Amiga systems have announced in a press release that AmigaOS 4.0 has been booted on an AmigaOne with an ATI Radeon graphic board for the first time. Today Jürgen Schober of point.design has succeeded in booting AmigaOS under use of a forefront technology driver on an AmigaOne-XE G4 with ATI Radeon 7000.

Originally the driver should not have been ported to the AmigaOne (because SNAP driver are supposed to be used here) but there have been the need of a quickly available transition solution. The port worked without any problems.

The driver which have been successfully tested under AmigaOS 4.0 on Classic Amiga computers as well as on the AmigaOne is now in beta stadium and is currently optimized for compatibility not on speed - currently it is worked for a better blitter support.

Additionally a screenshot of AmigaOS 4 (with seperate system programs) has been published on a Radeon 7000. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Genesi: Website for the planned computer game "Gladiateur" online
The official website for Genesi's computer game project Gladiateur (amiga-news.de reported) is now online at http://Gladiateur.PegasosPPC.com.

Gladiateur - The game

The game takes its inspiration from the stage production by Elie Chouraqui and Maxime Le Forestier, which debuts in Paris in 2004. The game allows you to take the role of Spartacus the Thracian, and lead the slaves in their revolt against the powers of Rome.

Gladiateur is a game development that will not simply lead to the release of a single game. The first release will concentrate of the War of Spartacus, but the game will evolve into a massively multi-player online realm, in which thousands of players will be able to take a part in the adventures and ambitions of the Roman world. Set against the backdrop of the Spartacan revolt, each player will be able to take a side in the rebellion or make their own way, going wherever opportunity takes them. You will be able to become a soldier or a merchant, a pirate or a politician. Players will be able to join together to form their own factions, or work alone. You will be able to live the carefree life of a wandering adventurer, build a powerful trading corporation, or rise to power in the Senate and change the very history of Roman.

The initial release of Gladiateur will use the Northland game engine from Funatics. This is a very sophisticated RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game in its own right, but in Gladiateur it will be extended to provide a unique, genre-busting experience. In the world of Gladiateur, persuasion and popularity is as important as units and resources, and tactics means a lot more than having the biggest army. This is not just another game where you build a base, defend against a few attacks, mass forces and finally rush the enemy base - this is a game set in a dynamic living world of tyrants, peasants and slaves where fear or loyalty can turn the tide of battle, and building trading links can be as important as building armies.

Gladiateur - The musical

Gladiateur is a musical stage spectacular written and produced by Eli Chouraqui, accompanied by a musical score composed by Maxime Le Forestiere. It will debut on 1 October 2004 at the Palais de Sports in Paris, and go on tour in Spring 2005. The music from the show will be released by EC7/Universal Music in 2004.

Eli Chouraqui's previous stage production was Les Dix Commandemants (The Ten Commandments), which debuted in Paris in 2000 and toured France, Switzerland, Belgium and Montreal. An English language version is due to open in 2005. Over 4 million albums, singles and DVDs of the production have already been sold. (snx)

Daniel Miller

Report from Pegasos Technology Demonstration in Washington DC, USA
In his report from the Pegasos Technology Demonstration, which took place Oct. 18th in Washington DC, USA, Daniel Miller writes the following:

MorphOS, Linux, AmiNetRadio, FxPaint, MPlayer, Kaya, ImageFX, free Superbundles, fresh MOS1.4 CDs with IBM stamp, ProStationAudio, presentations, the "VCR" case, complete system pricings, Peg II picture, MOS1.5 timing, MadBomber, and more.

From start to finish this was a really classy affair. I am local to the area and was invited to bring and show my own Pegasos, but this didn't stop me from checking out the scene and watching the presentations. Genesi personnel were really on a mission, giving personal attention, and striving to show the technology at its mindblowing best.

The chief exhibitor was magneticsystemsnyc.com who drove down from Brooklyn with a squad of state-of-the-art Pegasoses, including one of the few G4 models we have on this side of the pond. Four of those systems were configured for MorphOS, the fifth did double duty as an MoL/Debian (Gnome) machine. In addition to my comparatively home-spun system, there was a nice array of Genesi paraphenalia such as a plexuscom concept case, spinning illuminated Peg motherboards, a mechanical butterfly, a sampling of shrinkwrapped games, a Catweasel flipper for display, posters, sellsheets, free Superbundle (v. 3) and MOS1.4 IBM stamp limited silk screen edition CDs. Jammin'!

Now the stuff was neat, and the people were neater, but I must say seeing the cutting edge MOS systems in action was even more neat than that. It was... neat-o! Where to start? well, one of the more striking things was AmiNetRadio. As much as anything else this really illustrated one aspect of the future as Genesi sees it. The live radio stations scroll down in a list, and you select your favorite genre. It very quickly picks up the stream and your music plays. Most streams were at 128, some at 64, so this is fairly high fidelity. You can record your streams to MP3 files on your hard-drive, and them play them in Kaya. This all occurs effortlessly. Why does this illustrate part of Genesi's vision? They see themselves providing media, audio, visual, audiovisual and games via similar tools. Customers are then able to access their favorite media whether they are on walking trails with the planned Eclipsis handheld device, in their homes at their home theater, or at their workplace, whatever. You don't carry around a CD or plunk a videotape in the VCR, you just select your media on whatever device you are nearest and play it. Genesi believes that all this media including high resolution movies will be deliverable as the Pegaos progresses and new Genesi products are introduced. So that's the concept, maybe you like it, maybe you love it.

Another concept, this one now reality, is the "VCR" Pegasos. This was introduced by magneticsystemsnyc.com. What is it? It's a Pegasos in a small case that looks sort of like a VCR. This is offered as a complete Pegasos II system. If you don't want to muck around with assembling your own, you can consider getting one of these. It's nice and uses a half height Radeon video card. I like this, because it is an early step in the shrink-down evolution of Pegasos from standard desktop to set-top box to the handheld computer which is conceptualized to have all the power of a Pegasos.

Bill and Raquel from Genesi were there, as always demonstrating their personal commitment to the platform and its development, and supporting the rest of the Genesi team working towards the goal of a advanced, mature, popular, modern, alternative computer system.

More software: MPlayer was all over the frickin' place. People who demonstrated this system have recognized a winner. On just a G3 600 Mhz Pegasos running MorphOS 1.4 Mplayer is the most quickloading, responsive, compatible videoplayer ever on any platform. I am not spinning you, everybody says this. We all need to send the Mplayer programmers five dollars right now or something. There are few sublime pleasures in life as the first time you starting moving an MPlayer window opaquely around the screen, and realize that there is zero stutter or distortion, no matter how fast you circle it around. Hi-res letterbox or whatever. Of course it goes full screen and has a bunch of control features too.

There was some new image editing software from NovaDesign shown. They make well-established graphical prodcuts like ImageFX and Aladdin 4D. I was not clear on the details, but there is the intention to offer some form of this new software with future MorphOS versions, the Superbundle, or both. This is a clear potential asset to the Pegasos MorphOS product. The prospect of a revamped Aladdin4D ray tracing program for MOS was also talked about. ProStationAudio was shown. This is a really advanced sort of product with a detailed, intricate interface and all these channels and mixing controls and a lot of busy stuff going on all over the screen. It was shown mixing some tracks and certainly sounded good. It seems to me that this is a product for an audio professional, but maybe a casual home user can have fun with it too. Gotta go, I will have to write some more later, especially about... MadBomber!!!

PS: The BB half of BBRV stated MorphOS 1.5 would appear before the new year. Don't let them forget about that TCP-IP stack, thanks.

Photos of the event can be found at PegasosPPC.com. (snx)

Cyberstorm: Report on DCE repairs / MorphOS version at the end of this year
CyberStorm Warranty Repairs

As mentioned on the thread at Amiga.org earlier, all CyberStorm boards sent in under warranty will be replaced by new ones. The production of these is partly done, the PCB's are there with all lower part components fitted. The problem currently is the lack of availability of the right 68K sockets. The ones that were originally used for the Phase5 and later DCE productions were specially made for Phase5 and are no longer being manufactured. However, there are several investigations ongoing at other manufacturers to adapt existing (and available) connectors to be fitted to the CyberStorm PCB's. Once this is solved, the production will be completed and all involved will receive new CyberStorm cards under warranty.

Non-Warranty Repairs

All non-warranty repair customers should have had a price quote from me. The repairs that could be done have been completed and all cards have been sent back or will be sent back in the next week. There are also repairs that are pending awaiting CPU sockets (see above).

Non-Repairable Items

Repairs that could not be done have also been sent back or will be next week. Several cards have been sent back by DCE already, others will be returned by me from Rotterdam next week.

Other Factors

During investigating the whole repairs issue, several disturbing things have come to my attention. There are cases of repairs not being done because they have been submitted through a reseller that has had outstanding invoices for three years, and also cases where repairs were done and sent back to a reseller, who then sold them as new products. I will not disclose specific information but just wanted to state this in DCE's defence, they're not always the one to blame...

Genesi Gesture

As a gesture from Genesi, there will be a new release of MorphOS for 'classic Amiga' PowerPC cards available for free. The planned release is at the end of this year.

DCE and Genesi

Several people have opted their concern in the Amiga.org thread about possible future repairs at DCE for Genesi products. First of all, please consider that the Amiga repairs are a special situation and it is not common for repairs to take this long, not even for DCE. Furthermore, anyone buying a PegasosII is dealing with Genesi, not with DCE. If there is a case where a Genesi product needs repair or replacement, Genesi will see to it that it happens the right way and in a decent timeframe. For reference see our history with the mainboard exchanges for April and April2 fixed boards. These were made at DCE too!

Preliminary Conclusion

Apart from the wait for the right 68K sockets, most issues are either done or will be in the next week. There are however still some unallocated cards at DCE. Anyone that also thinks they have an outstanding repair at DCE and has not been in contact with me yet, please do so NOW, as we are working towards concluding the whole operation and at some point soon we will not take on any more investigations. If you have sent in your repair to a reseller be sure to mention which one explicitely.

Report from LinuxInfoTag in Dresden, Germany
At the first LinuxInfoTag in Dresden, Germany, on Oct. 18th, the Image_Installer team presented the Pegasos. We did not expect such a big success and were surprised by the scores of visitors crowding our stand who were interested in the system. They represented several platforms, from Amiga users to people using x86 systems.

One could test the system, and some visitors made use of the opportunity to install Mandrake 9.1 themselves on the Pegasos using the Image_Installer. They were surprised in a positive way and amazed how quick and easy the installation was finished. Also MorphOS didn't get a raw deal. The visitors tested the SuperBundle and were impressed by the speed of the system, despite just having a 600 MHz CPU.

When we had a little bit of time, Michael Heider of course continued to work on Image_Installer and removing bugs. We can say with quiet conscience that with version 2 of the Image_Installer an easy installation of PegXLin and Gentoo is possible. To the question if this version would also be free or enclosed with the Pegasos we had to answer "no" for the time being, since we don't know this ourselves yet.

At the KDE team one could see a pre-release of the new KDE 3.2. New applications were added as well as graphical improvements. Daniel Molkentin demonstrated among other things an Outlook clone and a faster webbrowser.

Also some people from the Debian team were there. They showed Debian 3.0 for the x86 platform and provided help to questions regarding installation and adjustment of Debian to x86 systems.

Bert Radke of the Jabber team showed the latest version of Jabber. One could get information how a Jabber server is build up and which advantages Jabber provides.

At IBM students could get information about new notebooks. Computers from desktops for the office to servers were shown by AMD, who also provided the Internet connection for the show.

Further small projects were free games for Linux and the topic "Linux at school and university" by the university of Dresden.

Furthermore the visitors could take part at an Install-Party during the whole day to solve problems.

OS4 on Tour: reports from Brisbane
Two members of the Amiga-Portal Amigaworld.net write under the title link their impressions of the first "OS4 on Tour" event in Australia. We have summarized the most important points for you in short:

  • About 50 visitors (twice the number at a comparable event last year)
  • Several AmigaOne computers had been shown - some running AmigaOS4, some with Debian-Linux (and MacOS X under MacOnLinux)
  • Doug Moir (AnythingAmiga) introduced the AmigaOne-Lite though not running. According to Doug are already several programmers busy with the drivers development for this Mini ITX motherboard.
  • A comprehensive seminar on the AmigaOne and OS4 had been held, there had been an IRC session with Fleecy Moss (Amiga Inc), too.

Genesi: Ordering for Pegasos II Begins on PegasosPPC.com (Update)
With the installment of a new ordering form at PegasosPPC.com Genesi has officially introduced the Pegasos II.

According to earlier announcements the price for the new boards are 299 Euros (G3/600MHz) up to 499 Euros (G4/1GHz).

For a limited time there's an upgrade option: an owner of the Pegasos I can trade in his or her board for a Pegasos II w. 1 GHz G4 processor for 200 Euros. The exchange will be handled in coordination with the local reseller who is offering the Pegasos II.

Also there is now the possibility to buy the SuperBundle on CD, instead of downloading it from Genesi's FTP server. The price is 19.95 Euros.

In the course of updating the website technical specifications of the new board were added, as well as a processor page that enables a comparison with X86 CPUs.

Update: According to a communication from Genesi, a Pegasos owner seeking to upgrade should not necessarily exchange his or her board where he or she bought it, but rather make sure to arrange this with a current Pegasos II reseller. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 21
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 21 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) Asemoon: Amiga Inc is somewhat blessed with the massive support from the Amiga community. However for some years now there have been rival groups actively trying to bring havoc to Amiga forums and spread around negative information or fantasy stories to harm Amiga efforts in any way they can. In what ways has all this (positive&negative) affected your business over the years?

Fleecy: The main problem with such activity is that it undermines confidence in the platform. The old saying that if you throw enough mud, it will stick is certainly true of the general approach by such groups and, whilst it is possible to counter rumour and allegation, the sheer weight and volume makes such an approach doomed to failure.

A general feeling of gloom, doom, suspicion or whatever else is desired eventually permeates to the core, like a damp autumn. Developers may decide to put projects on hold, users may delay a purchase and hope, dealers see their sales fall and hope for the future begins to evaporate; all going round and around in a depressing spiral whilst conveniently a 'sunny door' is left open to a brighter, but alternative future.

What is interesting is to trace the evolution of these attacks and notice how as each one is disproved, new rumours and different angles of attack appear. Amiga Inc has been bankrupt more times than a banana republic, we've had multiple CEOs, the AmigaOne would never work, AmigaOS4.0 would never see the light of day - on and on ad infinitum.

Despite efforts to the contrary however, most of this has stayed confined to the immediate community. Consequently our bigger partners, potential investors and the like have either never been affected or chose to ignore such activity, concentrating instead on actual talking to us. A pleasing trend is that private individuals are now coming directly to us to ask for information when rumours occur and we are more than happy to explain our position, rather than find ourselves the victims of elaborate stings and set ups in public forums.

Of course without a product in AmigaOS4.0, the real aim of these rumours has been to convince people to move to alternative platforms, convincing people that their wait for AmigaOS4.0 was ultimately going to be futile.

In the end, we just listened to the community who told us to shut up until we had something to show because in rising to the bait, we were just giving oxygen to the competitors. That is what we have done over the last twelve months, letting the community see for itself the progress of AmigaOS4.0. Running on CSPPC, running on AmigaOne - almost all PPC with just the graphics system left to upgrade and port. It has been a long and rocky road but the patience of the Amiga community and the passion and talent of the AmigaOS4 team has meant that as I write this, we are very very close to the end of AmigaOS4.0 as a project and the start of AmigaOS4.1, and a brighter future.

2) alx: I realise that since Amiga is a private company you may not be able to answer this in any detail, but do Amiga have any short-term plans to increase products on sale/cashflow, and could you share a generalised version of what you intend to do in this matter?

Fleecy: In the run up to Christmas we intend to realise new AmigaDE products whilst also creating a range of merchandise to tie in with the public launch of AmigaOS4.0.

Over the longer term, we are looking for sales in both OEM and direct to customer markets and the company will start changing shape and bringing in new people as we seek to exploit the potential of the AmigaOS in traditional and non traditional markets.

3) smithy: With Symbian, Microsoft and Palm pretty much having the PDA/mobile operating system software market sewn up, what is Amiga Inc's strategy to achieve some market sales? Bearing in mind, that all of the above three systems can run Java 2 Micro Edition, today's standard for cross-platform Java on small devices, and hence nulling AmigaDE's main selling point of write once, run anywhere. Furthermore, AmigaDE is based on PersonalJava - which only supports a very old version of Java.

Fleecy: The AmigaDE is a total content solution which runs on any host supported by the Tao-Group with their Intent product. If they do not support it and we see a positive business case, we ask them to support it - as is the case with AmigaOS4.0, to be the first PPC version of the AmigaDE. If they will not support it, then we move on. Our emphasis is on selling content - games and applications, interfaces and tools in as many deployment formats as possible - bundle, CD, Card, Download, OTA etc.

Our opportunity domain is any digital device, anything from Smartphone to Server, as long as the Tao-Group can provide the host binding layer. In that respect other OSs are not competitors, they are opportunities because our content runs on them. Customers don't care about the implementation details of a solution, they care about the solution itself. If our content solution is attractive to OEMs, device manufacturers, content brokers or end users, then it will be successful and our research and contacts over the past 18 months give us cause for great optimism. If we find that a particular market or product either is not supported by the Tao-Group or else has a poor or ill defined business potential then we will not support it.

Daily I am researching and testing content and competing solutions on such platforms as PocketPC, Symbian, Java, Morphun, FatHammer, Palm and the like and I am more than happy with both our solution and the features, quality and performance of the DE content.

4) Asemoon: Aminet is now the center of PD and shareware software for the classic Amiga. But aminet.net provides a mixture of various types of software from AmigaOS1.x programs to even WarpOS/MOS specific binaries. Are there any plans for a central files area for freely donwloadable AmigaOS4-compatible software?

Fleecy: The new Amiga Power Platform (APP) website will be launched just before the public launch of AmigaOS4.0 and will offer many such services to support, enhance and extend the community and platform.

5) Crumb: Have you planned to make the SDK interesting for different levels of coders? Have you included enough information and EXAMPLES in the autodocs? Will you include a decent reaction autodoc viewer that allows cut&paste? The editor of the sdk will at least show the parameters of each function (if it showed parameters of your own defined functions it would be even better) I mean... I want an IDE similar to RealBasic/Delphi/JBuilder...

Fleecy: We will be applying a lot of resources to the toolchain for AmigaOS4, finally implementing the Amiga Development Pipeline which provides a from concept to support description of the development process. As well as implementing various parts of it, the descriptive formats and interfaces will be open to allow for third parties to implement pieces themselves and to allow developers to build the pipeline using the components they wish. Thus a developer can chose between a complete IDE or the good old shell, giving them real choice and control over their development.

Key to AG2 and the whole Amiga philosophy is that the user is part of the environment and they can control and order it in anyway they want. This means anything from organisation of content through scripts, simple and complex all the way upto 'grown up' development languages for application developers. We intend to make this as simple to use as possible which means amongst other things, full, effective and most of all useful documentation.

6) Hybrid: Now there is an AmigaOne mainboard for Desktop, a Mini-itx one for small form factor AmigaOne computers. That's great but what about notebooks, handheld or tablet?

Fleecy: Stay tuned 8-)

7) AmigaMac: What will the future hold for PowerPC and Amiga? Will PowerPC remain in your long-term strategy?

Fleecy: PowerPC will be the only processor family we directly support for the AmigaOS4 release set. Once we reach AmigaOS5, we will support any processor family that provides us with business opportunity. PPC is certainly a processor family that offers that by the bucketload.

8) IonMane: In a previous Q&A it was stated tha the Gamepaks 1&2 were all sold out, and in a short timeframe I might add.How many gamepacks were sold and has AMiga Inc recieved the financial windfall from this deal as yet. Are there plans for another production of these (or similar)gamepaks for the near future (eg christmas)?

Fleecy: I can't divulge the financials but the purpose of the initial run was successful and we hope to have announcements soon about the consequences of that success. Sorry to be evasive but 'no announcements until we have something to announce' is what the community asked for and it is what we now feel comfortable in doing.

9) Zorro: There is a deal with Hyperion that if you (Ainc) were in serious trouble, you will give Hyperion rights to the name (or so...). If Amiga goes bust and someone buys them, they will have the license for the "Amiga" brand. But can US bankrupcy laws nullify any existing contracts (ie that with Hyperion) ?

Fleecy: I cannot go into the details but all that the community needs to know is that whatever could happen the future of the AmigaOS and the Amiga name has been safeguarded.

10) Crumb: Have you talked with Titan to make an OpenPCI library for OS4?

Fleecy: I am not entirely clear what has happened with OpenPCI and AmigaOS4.0 but the information I was able to collect suggests that some arrangement was made that effectively blocked this from occurring. If you want more details I suggest you contact Titan.

PCI is not a complicated implementation and AmigaOS4.0 already has a very good implementation which shows off the new library interface model.

Gladiateur: further details about the Genesi game
With quotes taken from a 55-pages Genesi internal document by Andrew Korn about the MorphOS game "Gladiateur" (amiga-news.de reported) have Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck given a more indepth view on Amiga.org into this ambitious project that is to be released in October 2004 at the same time as the stage production of the same name by Eli Chouraqui.

The story's about the Spartacus rebellion and shall offer an online multiplayer part as well as an offline single player mode. It is planned to release "Gladiateur" in several parts starting with the single player mode. The online mode will be offered to the buyers as a downloadable patch as soon as the server side is prepared.

As game engine will the one by Nordland come into use of which the MorphOS version by Epic is just now in the beta stage. A Later transition from the 2D client to a client with 3D ego perspective is planned where both kinds of clients shall be able to operate with the same server software - with Genesi taking the unrestricted playability on platforms with restricted capacity, e.g. settop boxes or handhelds, into account.

For the next week is another kind of "developer connection" (using the "Phoenix definition" of the developers term) announced on the Genesis Pegasos site under http://gladiateur.pegasosppc.com. (nba) (Translation: wk)

IOSPIRIT (ANF)

IOSPIRIT: New website and new support concept
IOSPIRIT, developer of well-known software titles such as fxPAINT, fxSCAN and VHI Studio and distributor of among other titles the webbrowser IBrowse, today presents itself with new website and new support-concept.

The new website, basing on the internal new development "Callisto II", is clearly devided in the sections News, Products, Downloads, Service, Company, Basket and protected customer login area (Login) and allows a fast and targeted navigation within the IOSPIRIT-pages. Help texts embedded into the new pages guide visitors through input masks and contain additional, valuable information.

In the future, the customer's account is at the centre of all offers and services:

Inside the account orders are placed and managed, product registrations submitted and saved, support queries sent and if needed address changes submitted.

But enhancements are not limited to the surface: internally a lot of changes have been made as well. From now on, express orders can be placed, skipping the one hour period for last-minute order changes before actual order processing, orders can be automatically split depending on availability, packaging and shipping costs are already calculated in the basket and the total value of an order is automatically converted to other currencies for orientation. By the introduction of a direct link between IOSPIRIT and the creditcard-processor, the average time required for the processing of payments via VISA, MASTERCARD and EUROCARD has been shortened to only a few minutes.

Hand in hand with the introduction of the new website, the support-concept received a major revision to allow an even more efficient and faster processing. Therefore, online-forms especially designed to meet support-requirements (so called support desks) are available to IOSPIRIT-customers via the IOSPIRIT-website for each product. They presort support queries, ask for all required information and archive the complete correspondence for a supportquery, thus providing everything for a better overview and processing. An account and the registration of all bought IOSPIRIT products are now precondition for being able to send a supportquery.

With the introduction of the new shopping system, accounts from the old system can no longer be used. IOSPIRIT-customers should open a new account in the now installed, new system. Once logged into the new account, the function "Transfer account" is available, which will transfer registration data and keyfiles from the old shop system in a few seconds and completly hassle-free.

Answers to frequently asked questions regarding the new shop- and support-system can be found in the "IOSPIRIT company and website FAQ", general information on the shop can be found in the "Shop information". (nba)

Marvell and IBM Announce Extension of Discovery System Controllers to PPC 970
Marvell and IBM today announced a relationship to accelerate the adoption of IBM PowerPC 970 processors in next-generation networking, storage and server systems. As part of the agreement, Marvell plans to extend its market-leading family of Discovery™ chipsets with new system controllers that include IBM's high-speed PowerPC 970 Elastic Interface technology.

The combination of IBM's PowerPC 970 microprocessor, with speeds up to 2 GHz, and Marvell's Discovery 970 system controller is intended to provide embedded customers with a comprehensive and cost effective 64 bit sub-system solution. In conjunction with Marvell's Gigabit PHY, Serial ATA and high-speed switching products, Marvell and IBM now offer a complete solution base for next generation embedded applications.

Marvell plans to make samples of its Discovery 970 chipsets available in the first quarter of 2004. IBM plans to make its PowerPC 970 processor available in the first quarter of 2004.

"Marvell's decision to team up with IBM and extend their support of PowerPC is a tremendous piece of good news for the Embedded marketplace," said Lisa Su, director of PowerPC and emerging products, IBM Microelectronics. "The combination of their Discovery 970 with our PowerPC 970 should yield the most powerful, scalable and flexible solution available in the Embedded system marketplace."

"We are very excited to team with IBM to provide our customers with what we expect to be the most powerful PowerPC sub-system architectures ever designed," said Balaji Baktha, General Manager of Storage and Consumer Division, Marvell Semiconductor. "IBM and Marvell are committed to working closely with leading OEMs to drive the development of next generation networking, server and storage applications."

Marvell Discovery 970 System Controller:
The Marvell Discovery product family represents the most widely adopted system and communication controllers in the industry. The Discovery 970 system controller integrates several I/O peripherals on-chip, including Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-X bridges, storage functions and DDR memory interface. The Discovery 970 is software compatible with the existing Marvell system controllers helping to preserve customer software investments while accelerating development cycles.

IBM PowerPC 970:
The IBM PowerPC 970 is derived from IBM's award-winning POWER4 server processor to provide high performance and additional function for users. As the first in a new family of high-end PowerPC processors, the chip is designed to manipulate data in larger, 64-bit chunks and accelerate compute-intensive workloads like multimedia and graphics through specialized circuitry, known as a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) unit. IBM packs performance and new features into the chip using ultra-thin 0.13-micron circuitry (nearly 800 times thinner than a human hair), constructed of copper wiring and about 52 million transistors based on IBM's efficient silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. Grasshopper: Pagestream release for AmigaOS 4
Positive signs from the AmigaOS 4 frontier: Grasshopper LLC will release the desktop publishing software PageStream for AmigaOS 4 as soon as the new operating system is available. Furthermore prices are cut for PageStream 4.1 to 99 US-Dollars, for PageStream Professional 4.1 to 149 US-Dollars. Read the complete note by Grasshopper LLC right below:

Grasshopper LLC today announced the addition of a fifth supported platform in the stable of computers and operating systems that PageStream already runs on. Amiga OS4 PPC is an exciting new operating system and hardware from Amiga Inc, Eyetech and Hyperion Entertainment that follows in the footsteps of the great hardware and software that is the Amiga.

"Deron Kazmaier, PageStream creator, has exceeded our expectations again!" proclaimed Grasshopper LLC owner Marna Holt. "Deron has burned the midnight oil on his old love, the Amiga, creating the foundation for the next generation of PageStream on the Amiga."

While the full public release of OS4 is beyond our control, the PageStream is not! As the Amiga OS4 PPC is a natural progression from the older 68k, we are offering a limited time discount for those who are moving up to the AmigaOS4 PPC version from PageStream Amiga68k and likewise we are including the Amiga68k version to those who purchase the PPC version before it is publicly released. Crossgrade price from PageStream 4.1 Amiga68k to AmigaPPC is only $40 and the price for a new copy of PageStream4.1 Amiga PPC (with Amiga68k) is only $99. The special offers are set to expire upon the public release of Amiga OS4, and will then revert to the same low pricing already in place for the other platforms. Advance copies of PageStream 4.1 AmigaPPC are available now, but we will continue to stay in step with improvements to OS4.

If no safety copies exist, these should be created now and - if required - we'll reactivate expired downloads to support this (also see end of the message).

After the 18th of September 2003 these files will no longer be available - also not on request.

The only exception to this are purchases of the respectively latest versions of our products (e.g. fxPAINT 2.0, fxSCAN 4.0, VHI Studio 6.0, IBrowse 2.3, ..). For purchases of older versions as online-versions (e.g. fxSCAN 3.0, fxPAINT 1.5, VHI Studio 5.x, ..), we strongly recommend to make safety-copies until this date, since we won't be able to grant access to these files after this 18th of September 2003.

If another unlocking of downloads should be required, please write an email to "unlockdownloads AT iospirit DOT de".

We are already looking forward to soon welcome you to our new website. (nba)

VCD Save Version 0.2 Appears
The graphic interface of "VCD Save" has been adapted to the new NewGUI System, this means that the GUI may now be adapted to the needs of the user without rewriting the program entirely. With the help of the automatic snapshot function of NewGUI all gadgets are positioned in the places they were when the program last ended. Gadgets may be expanded or shrunk when the user presses CTRL when he clicks on the border being changed. When the user presses on the left SHIFT key the gadget is moved. The save routine has been modified in order to allow the saving of captions on SVCDs. It is possible with VCD Save to copy VideoCD tracks directly to the hard-drive, something for which AllegroCDFS was required up until now. (nba) (Translation: dm)
