AmigaOS 4: AmiFTP 1.900
The Swedish dealer Guru Meditation has succeeded to obtain the sources to the Reaction-based FTP client AmiFTP (screenshot) from the original author Magnus Lilja. The program will continue to be distributed as freeware, Joachim Birging has assumed further development. Changes in version 1.900:
  • Ported AmiFTP to OS4 by Joachim Birging
  • Added AmiDock support. Use the new tooltype DOCKY to enable it
  • Also changed prefs to use application.library instead of the old IFF format. The old format can still be imported from the settings menu
  • Small changes to the GUI to reflect ReAction changes made in OS4. This is an old ClassAct program, remember.
  • Changed the old images in the SpeedBar to use Mason's AISS images instead.
  • Removed all ReqTools.library references and changed them to either ASL or ReActions Requester class.
  • Added support for AmiUpdate.
  • Fixed the fuelgauge in the transfer window.
  • Added "Save last dir visited" checkbox to the site edit window. AmiFTP can now save the last dir you were in.
  • Added Save prefs silently option to main prefs.
  • Removed the buttons at the bottom of the window. Since SpeedBar can be text-only now you can configure AmiFTP to use text-only buttons at the top instead.
  • Replace string + button with GetFile/GetFont where appropriate.
  • Added mouse wheel support in main window and site list.

Ralf Steines (ANF)

Back to the Roots: Status information
In the meantime, since the most diverse speculations on the whereabouts of the back2roots.org main archive have spread in the Amiga and emulation community, which is well-versed in rumors, here is a brief status update:

The BTTR server was never disconnected, but ran technically unattended for the last two years (more precisely, since the summer of 2005). Since everything is automated except for updates, this was initially not a problem either.

Surely, everyone has noticed that we suffered under massive disk space bottlenecks and our update frequency became ever sparser. Then, through appeals for donations, we have tried to afford financing our further growth (and we still have a lot up our sleeves) with the help of the community.

A considerable amount of donations came together, too, so that for now, nothing stands in the way of the project's future. But now, a complete disruption of the hard disk storage unit came by, despite all the stability of the automation in the absence of the programmer Ralf Steines (hippie2000) from the Net. In the process, important parts of the BTTR engine were overwritten with empty files. Surely, everyone has seen the result...

Anyway, Ralf is back, the core of the team is reunited, and right now, we are working on the reconstruction of the server which is located at the University of Trondheim, to make possible the next growth of the project.

To all those who have donated until now: Count on it that everything arrived and will now be used (or was already used) for the specified purpose. All others are still welcome to participate. You can find details on back2roots.org.

In the next weeks, we are reconstructing everything, reinstalling the machines, configuring everything, in order to be available to you soon in old glory again. Afterwards, it goes on with new updates.

Till then, the page is available symbolically with limited functionality, so that everyone can see that we are back, so please, a little patience still.

Best regards,
Your back2roots.org team (snx) (Translation: cad)

Instant Messenger: Jabberwocky 1.8b6 (beta)
Jabberwocky is an MUI-based Instant-Messaging-Client for AmigaOS 3/4 and MorphOS which is able to access different messaging-networks (e.g. AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo) with the help of so called server modules. Changes since version 1.7:
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when a "topic" was entered in the conference window before joining a converence.
  • Account window "connect" & "register" buttons are now disabled when Jabberwocky is connected.
  • Changed menus to disable Roster menu and roster contextmenu when Jabberwocky is not connected. Some menuitems are disabled if there is an empty roster when Jabberwocky connects.
  • Fixed a crash in network discovery function that resulted from attempting to visit a jabber server in the agents window with Jabberwocky not yet connected to a Jabber server.
  • Added loading and saving of codeset prefs and activated existing "Charset" GUI elements in prefs.
  • Merged in code diffs for charset conversion in chat windows. Charset conversion is untested at this point.
  • Fixed long standing bug in prefs loading of an event command with quotes and the quotes appear as they should instead of escaped XML.
  • Added some serial debugging that can be activated when a "Debug" version of Jabberwocky is compiled.
  • Added functions to obtain external IPA address from Jabberwocky homepage for file transfers through a Router.
  • Added prefs item to activate the external IP address retrieval.
  • Updated Iksemel library to latest available version.
  • Added "usedclasses" identifier and array so that only the external classes actually used by Jabberwocky will be listed in the MUI preferences. This only works for v20+ MUI and will be ignored by older MUI versions.
  • Updated locale catalogs and added Swedish catalog.
  • Localize main window status messages.

  • Better compatibility with OS 3.1 and older HDToolbox versions.
  • CD32 statefile support works again.
  • Paths handling updates (yet again..)

Photos and news from Pianeta Amiga
This weekend in Empoli (Italy) the "Pianeta Amiga" takes place. ACube (Sam440ep), Hyperion (OS4) and other companies take part. Meanwhile first photos and news from the event are available:

Andrea "afxgroup" Palmate is currently porting the P2P-client Bourriquet which is based on eMule to AmigaOS 4 (screenshots: 1, 2).

At lightelements.com the first photos can be looked at. Additional to the PPC-motherboard Sam440ep, which is sold to customers for the first time, empty packages of the soon coming up operating system "AmigaOS 4"-classic version were shown at the event for preadvertising reasons. In this way ACube probably tries to reveal that the distribution of the classic version certainly will come.

If there will be further messages they will be announced as soon as possible. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Future: Gallery Update
Press release The Amiga Future Gallery has been updated considerably the last days. There is a new wallpaper section where users can put their own wallpapers online and make them available to others.

The games screenshots section is new aswell. We will publish every screenshot we have in this gallery. The first 1000 are already online.

Furthermore there are the already known sections for the reader's workbenches and computers where the users can post screenshots and photos.

Moreover we are looking for other names for this two sections. The ones currently used don't really sound well.

Subscribers of the Amiga Future are able to download colour CD covers for printing.

The English edition of the Amiga Future 67 has been sold out. But there are enough copies of issue 68.

Also we ask all users especially the ones getting the English edition to extend their subscriptions as soon as possible or letting us know if they aren't interested anymore. This would ease the planning of the next issue of the Amiga Future heavily. (snx)

Individual Computers: Neue Catweasel Treiber, Commodore Scene Award
Press release: The most important change of the recent release of the Win32 drivers for the Catweasel are visible in the imagetool, which now supports many new disk formats and has new graphical functions. After a long wait, the Apple floppy formats of older Macintosh computers (400KByte and 800KByte per disk) and the Apple IIe series are now supported. Two more formats of Commodore classics can now be read, but this requires special disk drives with 100tpi. Regular floppy drives have a track spacing of 96tpi, so there will be read errors on most of the tracks of Commodore 8050 or SFD1001 disks.

As always, the new drivers are free, and they still contain the routines required for operation with the oldest Catweasel models. We're asking our customers who are still using these controllers to carefully test these drivers with the old hardware, as we are only testing with the latest PCI models of the controller. Download: CWMK42400.zip (432 KByte).

Commodore Scene Lifetime Achievement Award goes to individual Computers

Earlier this week, we learned from the newsletter of the Digitale Kultur e.V. that our product Retro Replay has been voted to be the "best 3rd party hardware" by the members of the Commodore scene. Our sincere thanks are given to all Commodore Sceners. Special thanks goes to the scene group Cyberpunx, whose software surely made a large part of the wide acceptance of our product. The Catweasel was nominated as "Best Current SID Usage", but it had to stand back behind the synthesizer SidStation. You can find more results of the awards on the pages of Digitale Kultur.

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.5.3 (update)
OpenTTD is an open-source clone of the well-known PC strategy game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" from the 90's with many enhancements - a network mode, individual graphic sets and adaptations to over two dozen languages, among other things.

Compared with the "release candidates" released so far, numerous minor bugs were fixed in the newest version. OpenTTD requires files of the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe game.

MorphOS: New Ambient nightly build
For the first time since April 1, a nightly build of the MorphOS desktop Ambient was made available again, under the title link. You can gather the changes that have been carried out since that time from the changelog.

The nightly builds are about compilations of the current development status without documentation and support. By nature, it is not guaranteed that all implemented functions work error-free. Accordingly, use the nightly builds at your own risk, a backup of your present Ambient installation is strongly recommended. (snx) (Translation: cad)

New Amiga Future Page online
Press release: The last weeks we have put much time and money into the Amiga Future homepage. The time has come. Yesterday evening the new page went online.

The new homepage automatically detects the language setting on the user's computer. If set to German it will load the German page and if set to English it will load the English one respectively. Of course registered users have the choice to set the language differently in the page settings. By the way all registered users should check their settings. Lots of stuff has been added.

The search engines of the whole homepage have been improved. Now it is possible to search every database on every page.

A new gallery has been installed which allows subsections. This makes the gallery containing over 1000 pictures clearly arranged. The new gallery allows to display pictures directly within the forum and the articles.

A new article database has been installed aswell. It is a lot faster than before and displays the articles better.

And finally a new download database has been installed. It is now possible to describe the downloads. We only need someone to help us out with that. :) Now you can add comments to the downloads and report mistakes.

We installed a new lexicon for the news section and forum posts. Nearly everything in the article database can be viewed as a PDF document.

There are lots of more features. You can choose whether you want to see German oder English news. This setting includes the search engines. There will be some more improvements in the next few weeks. We would like to know from you what to change. Because of that we started a poll on the Amiga Future homepage.

Amiga Future looks for help for the editorial office.

We look for (German or English) users having a good knowledge of the Amiga and some free time. If you are interested the please write an email to Andreas@amigafuture.de using the subject "Amiga Future".

We need people for the homepage aswell. We already have a huge download section with full versions on the Amiga Future homepage. Now we look for someone to help us out regularly or once. It is all about the check of some downloads and writing a small description of the program including the requirements.

Additionally, we search for someone to support us in getting new full verions. Especially we need someone to look for the current copyright owners (i.e. Psygnosis) and to ask them for a license for the Amiga Future.

Other sections of the homepage need help aswell. For example we need a user who takes care of the link database. It is about extending the content. Besidess of that we are looking for a PHP programmer to write us some small scripts to ease the work with the homepage. (cg) (Translation: cg)

MemOptimizer 3.056
MemOptimizer by Roland Heyder defragments the system memory. Changes since the last version:
  • smaller optimisations in the AvailMem() patch that now also correctly supports MEMF_LARGEST for the FreeStack though this has to be seen more theoretically as the biggest block already has to be smaller than 4096 bytes to even have a chance to find a bigger block on the stack. In most cases won't the system run with such a lack of memory :-)
  • arithmetic overflow removed in StackUsage()
  • MEMF_REVERSE usage adjusted, could be refused even if the calling task was allowed when the memory was taken from the FreeStack (makes no sense here as the blocks on the stack aren't in order). From now on will all allowed REVERSE demands directly forwarded the the system's FreeList to secure that these will really come from the high end of the memory list.
  • critical situation in ClearStack() corrected, a pointer was still used after the memory it pointed to was already deallocated
  • As several people told me does MemOptimizer run without problems under MorphOS, of course only in the UNPATCHed mode as it wouldn't be a good idea to replace the native PPC code of MorphOS by 68k functions.

AROS: MUIbase ported
MUIbase is a relational, programmable data base for AmigaOS ported by Steffen Gutmann for AROS/i386. The necessary changes were entered into the SVN archive of the MUIbase project on Sourceforge so that an adaption for AROS/PPC can be done as well.

Please have in mind that an up-to-date version of AROS is needed as in the course of the porting several bugs in AROS had to be fixed. Besides that you have to create an assign muibase: otherwise it could lead to crashes of some demo sata bases. Should it happen that the focus gets lost and no new data records can be entered you have to press the Tab key. (snx) (Translation: wk)

File System: SFS 1.275
The latest version of the alternative file system SFS now supports files larger than four GB under AmigaOS 3 as well. The changes in detail:
  • Replaced mutexes by semaphores again
  • Built for AmigaOS 3.x/m68k incl. 'SFS/2' support. To use 'SFS/2' partitions on AmigaOS 3.x you have to install SmartFileSystem into the RDB with DOSType 'SFS/2' (0x53465302), i.e. to use both 'SFS\0' and 'SFS\2' partitions you have to install the same SmartFileSystem binary 2 times into the RDB. If booting from 'SFS\2' partitions isn't required you can load SmartFileSystem as kickstart module using tools like LoadResident, LoadModule, etc. instead of storing it twice in the RDB.

SFS 1.275 is available for AmigaOS 3/4. (cg) (Translation: tz)

AmigaOS 4: Package management system AmiUpdate 1.75
AmiUpdate is a simple package management system similar to RPM or dpkg which are known from the Linux world. In contrast to its prototypes AmiUpdate can not handle references. Required components are not automatically installed for a certain package.

On behalf of the users AmiUpdate searches for newer versions of the installed applications (list of supported packages), downloads and automatically installs them (if this option is supported by the package).

AmiUpdate has been available for years but so far was only used by AmigaOS beta testers to keep their beta systems up to date. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MUI-class: MCC_BetterString 11.12
Jens Langner has published new versions of the following MUI-classes for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS: BetterString.mcc and BetterString.mcp in version 11.12 as well as HotKeyString.mcc in version 12.8.

Changes:
  • mcc/hotkeystring: adapted documentation and minor tweaks to the sources of HotkeyString.mcc
  • mcc/BetterString_mcc.h: converted all MUIV_BetterString_DoAction_#? values to a named enum rather than simple defines
  • mcc: added new MUIM_BetterString_DoAction method which allows to manually perform certain actions like Copy/Cut/Paste,... which are normally just executed with the default shortcuts. This way the gadget can completly controlled remotely
  • mcc: added new MUIA_BetterString_NoShortcuts attribute that allows to disable the default shortcuts like Amiga+C, Amiga+V, etc. for applications interested in performing those operations manually
  • include/mccinit.c: updated to latest 1.10 version

Chiptune-Tracker: Hively-Tracker 1.4 for AmigaOS 3/4 and AROS
HivelyTracker is a tracker based on the AHX-format (screenshot). AHX was developed in the nineties to write songs which have the typical chip-sound of the SID (sound-chip of C64). Changes since version 1.3:
  • Playback no longer stops when the "Load Mod" filerequester is open
  • Undo & Redo for almost all edit operations
  • Cutting an area in the position editor cleared both columns of the left & right edges even if they weren't selected. Fixed.
  • Cutting or pasting in the position editor didn't update the track editor even if the current tracks were changed by the operation. Fixed.
  • If you change preference options that require the GUI to be closed and re-opened, it now does that instead of requiring you to quit and restart.
  • Skin directory, initial song directory and initial instrument directory options all now can be selected via ASL directory requester.
  • Right-clicking on a channel mute button now mutes all other channels except that channel. If it is already the only un-muted channel, all channels will be unmuted instead (suggested by Syphus).
  • Added "9xx" panning command to the instrument performancelist. It only changes the panning position for that specific instrument. The next time an instrument is played in that channel, it returns to the last panning position set with the traditional "7xx" track command.
  • Pasting or marking blocks in the position editor didn't work correctly if channel 1 wasn't the leftmost channel. Fixed.
  • Pressing Ctrl+B while marking a block now cancels block marking instead of resetting the mark position.
  • Added a drumpad mode, selectable either by the funky new on/off gadget or via the backslash key. When enabled, selecting instruments via numeric keyboard causes them to be played, and if edit mode is set, the instrument is inserted into the song. Suggested by Syphus.
  • Changed the release cut gadget from a 0/1 number gadget to the funk- tastic new on/off gadget (W00T!!111)
  • Fixed a bug in the command line replayer that was really dumb and should have been spotted ages ago! Oops.
  • Before, if a skin directory existed, and the logo bitmap existed in that directory, but there was any other file missing, hively would bomb out instead of reverting to the default skin and retrying. Now if a skin fails to load for any reason, hively retries with the default skin (SIDMonster-Light). This allows hively to load even if ht.prefs contains an invalid skin (such as SIDMonster-Heavy, which has been discontinued from 1.4 onwards).
  • Fixed an incorrect pointer in the autogain routine

AmigaOS 4: Classic-version with native Mediator-support
According to Hans-Jörg "Rogue" Frieden in a thread at amigans.net currently the kernel is adapted to the known PCI-busboards of the Mediator-serie.

In the past it was known that the original pci.library of the producer of Elbox also works under AmigaOS 4 but has some incompatibilities to the existing PCI-driver system of the new operating system. That means users had to use the drivers provided by Elbox.

If and how the DMA problem of the Mediator boards will be solved - the hardware does not support real DMA - is still not clear. Certain PCI-cards (e.g. tv-cards) require DMA. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: Shuffle 1.10
An update for Shuffle is available to all customers. Shuffle is a MorphOS implementation of the famous Sliding Block Puzzle, often also known as 15 Puzzle and is making use of MorphOS core components like MUI or Reggae.

Besides some smaller cosmetical fixes the update offers localization for three new languages. Thanks to Krashan, Vinnny and Stevo you can play Shuffle now in Polish, Russian or Dutch. Translations for Italian and Hungarian are in work.

Shuffle will be available as part of MorphOS 2.0, but if you want to play it now already you can buy it for just 3 Euro. Please note that this early offer will end on 31th August 2007. After that date no more copies of Shuffle will be sold anymore and if you still want to play Shuffle then you must wait for the MorphOS 2.0 release (no matter how long this will take). (snx)

Retro-Gaming: WHDLoad 16.8
With WHDLoad is it possible to install games and scene demo's, which are only created to work on floppydisc systems, on a harddisc. Beside are several incompatibility problems with new Amiga systems will be fixed. Changes of the lates version:
  • fix: the requester displayed when audio.device is already used defaults to 'ignore' now, so it works in combination with option NoReq/S (Horace)
  • fix: the online help displayed when WHDLoad is called from the CLI without arguments has been fixed for the options Cache/S and DCache/S (Hexaae)
  • fix: CLI args fixed to fault on too many arguments (Psygore)
  • chg: the install template supports installing from disk images via diskimage.device, trackwarp.library and capsimage.device
  • chg: kick31.s supports also the kickstart image from the A500/A600/A2000, with that it is possible to make Slaves using kick31 which are compatible to a 68000 CPU (Don Adan)
  • new: WHDLoad itself disables the interrupts of Mediator boards now while running the installed program, this should solve problems like freezing and gfx/sound distortion on these boards, thanks to John Girvin and Elbox for providing the solution
  • chg: WHDLoad now avoids opening the WorkBench screen after exiting, older versions have always opened the WB if no other screen was left open, requires at least v39
  • new: WHDLoad now shows the task name on exceptions if there was a working amigaos running, it also shows segment name and offset if SegTracker was running (inside emulation of course)
  • new: option NoMemReverse/S added to the global configuration (Ralf Stützer)
  • new: catalan translation of documentation, thanks to Manel Beltran
  • new: its now possible to use special rawkeys for the QuitKey/N option to let WHDLoad quit from a button press on the mouse/joystick/joypad
  • chg: some changes to the kickemu, check history therein
