Amiga Quake2 Page Online
In cooperation with Daniel Schultz: an Amiga Quake 2 webpage has been started, on which additional material regarding Quake 2 for AmigaOS will be published in the future - such as new mods and levels, whether created by users or downloaded from the server.

Originally there were 41 Quake 2 mods for AmigaOS. Since then there have been another 20 mods. These additional mods will be downloadable from the Quake2 page. So there will be 2 or 3 mods offered for download weekly, just check the page and don't miss them.

To start off, the following three mods are offered:
  • ChaosDM - one of the best Deathmatch mods for Quake 2
  • Star Trek - contains the entire Enterprise as a level (and new weapons)
  • Bots - "Battle of the Sexes" - a CTF Mod, based on classes, in which a male team and a female team go up against each other.
The requirements to be able to use these mods are that you must have Quake2 for Amiga installed. Quake2 is available from retailers now.

Amiga Arena: Full Version of WBMenu`97
In cooperation with Manfred L. and with the approval of H. Röhricht Amiga Arena is making possible a further classic full version of WBMenu`97. Here is a snip from the handbook:

WBMenu`97 is a multifunctional high speed data bank system with an intuitive user interface, with which you are placed in a position where you can have an overview and manage and start all of your programs. To this end WBMenu`97 offers functions, for which unless several programs must be inserted, and is an offer to all who wish to get the most from their computers.

Thereby it doesn't matter what particular use you make of your computer. WBMenu`97 is the first program of its type, that can take over full control of the system. Whether it is the binding of hardware drivers or the loading of the Workbench, it's "no problem" for WBMenu '97.

You'll find more information in the handbook for WBMenu`97! (ps) (Translation: dm)

Audio: AHI/PPC 6 only for MorphOS and AmigaOS 4
Martin Blom, the developer of the soundcard driver system AHI, has reiterated that there will be neither PowerUp nor WarpUp versions. There is only the MorphOS version (available) and the AmigaOS 4 version (planned).

Here is his original announcement:

"Yes, indeed, today is November 7th, not July 11th. Anyway, I've been asked to clarify one thing regarding the PPC version of AHI. There will be no WarpUp version, nor will there be any PowerUp version. The reason is that neither of these two systems allow PPC code to be invoked from within an interrupt?, which is an absolute requirement for AHI. The current PPC version is for MorphOS only. In the future, I hope to have an AmigaOS 4 version as well.

1) While it should have been obvious by reading the PowerUp documentation, there is nothing in the WarpUp documentation or the actual design that suggests that it will not work; in WarpUp, it could be possible if the implementation had allowed it. In any case, the days when I could be bothered to write for a mixed CPU system are since long gone..." (ps) (Translation: dm)

Quake2 Amiga Port Available
On the 2nd of November 2002 at the WOASE convention in London, Quake 2 for AmigaOS officially went on sale. The game was demonstrated in a "Death Match" between three Amigas. It ran a custom level which was specially created for the convention. The network server was a PC, in order to demonstrate that PC users and Amigans may play in the same TCP/IP multiplayer network, however naturally an Amiga could also be used as a server. The Quake2 packet for Amiga contains an easy-to-use installer script, a startup GUI, and documentation in AmigaGuide format, including the original version of Quake2 for Windows, which contains the data files.

Over 55 Quake2 mods are to be offered for Quake2 through different channels, including the Internet.

Quake2 for AmigaOS will become available from your local Amiga dealer sometime this week. The price may vary from dealer to dealer.

Sendo Z100 Will Not Appear
Setback for Bill McEwen: The Sendo Z100 will not appear. Even in his Executive Update at the beginning of November, 2002, McEwen was announcing (under point 6) that the Sendo Z100 with the "SmartPhonePacks" would be produced.

In the article from Heise "Setback for Microsoft's Handy-Operating System" (see title link) it is made clear that presumably nothing will come of the market introduction of Amiga Anywhere on this Handy. Sendo released the following in a special announcement:

Pegasos in the Microwave and Three More Bundles
After the successful appearance of Thendic-France and bPlan at the World of Amiga South-East 2002 last Saturday, some new Pegasos-related developments became known. The first four Pegasos-bundles have been determined:
  • The unusual "VideoMicrowave" is a remodeled steel microwave with an LCD display as the door and a Pegasos board on the inside. You'll find information at http://www.videomicrowave.net.
  • The "Development Suite" is a developer package for the Pegasos, Eclipsis, and Pegasos server stack.
  • The "Pega-shush" is a home-server for the long-endurance business of integrating with other entertainment electronics. The communications occur over a 802.11b network card.
  • The "Games Package" is an offer especially for friends of good game value. More details will be announced at http://www.pegasosppc.com.

On the 16th of November Thendic-France will spend some time in Poland at the Amiga Show 2002, and they are going to bring a bunch of Pegasos equipment to test on the basis of a new ISO installation [new MorphOS version - dm]. This will be the first showing of the Pegasos Wireless Camera with the display software to be seen on an iPAQ (this is just a temporary solution until the Eclipsis prototype is ready). How can you as a user help? You can test the supported titles and report the mistakes that make it impossible to complete the game. You should go over the details at Information on Release 0.3.0. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Amiga to create games and other content for Microsoft Windows ...
Amiga to create games and other content for Microsoft Windows for Smartphone 2002 Software

Snoqualmie, WA, Nov 6, 2002 - Amiga, a leader in games and entertainment software, today announced the release of games targeting Windows Powered Smartphones. Using the Amiga Anywhere Content Engine and their new "App Pak" technology, applications written for Windows Powered Pocket PC handheld computers will now be available for Smartphones as well. In addition, Amiga intends to build specific games and productivity applications that take advantage of the unique characteristics of devices running Microsoft Windows for Smartphone.

"Amiga has partnered with Microsoft to create the best experience for games and entertainment on Smartphone devices", said Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga. "We have been an early adopter of Microsoft Windows for Smartphone because of our belief that it can revolutionize the mobile experience. With our new App Pak technology, users can access applications on their PDA or Smartphone without having to install them from their personal computer."

App Pak applications are distributed on memory cards. Users will be able to purchase the cards from their retail store and immediately use them. In less than 60 seconds, users can enjoy games and other applications with just by inserting their card. Just insert the card in the appropriate slot, click, and play. App Pak applications use little storage space on local systems making them more functional for PDA and Smartphone devices with limited resources.

"The Windows Powered Smartphone enables users to do what they want, when they want, from business productivity to entertainment," said Mary Rose Becker, group marketing manager for Mobile Devices at Microsoft Corp. "We're thrilled that Amiga is releasing it's games for the Smartphone platform, providing our mutual customers with compelling entertainment options."

Amiga will begin shipping games and other applications for Smartphone in time for the holiday season this year. To learn more about Amiga visit www.amiga.com or www.shopamiga.com. Multimedia authoring system: Hollywood available
Andreas Falkenhahn wrote:
Finally! After a long time of development, the Multimedia authoring system Hollywood is available. Hollywood is a powerful and extensive program which is unique on the Amiga. You could compare Hollywood with a modern version of Scala: But Hollywood works fully in 24bit mode and uses only system functions to grant compatibility on every Amiga system. Because of this extreme system friendly programming Hollywood does also run on Amiga emulators with great speed. Versions of Hollywood for MorphOS and AmigaOS4 and maybe also AROS are planned. On the Hollywood product page you will find an extensive overview including screenshots from the program. In the next days some applications done with Hollywood will be presented here. Hollywood is delivered on CD-ROM and can be ordered now.

Hollywood is the Multimedia Application Layer for Amiga(tm) and compatible operating systems. This means that it offers you a script language together with advanced functions that allow you to create your own multimedia applications which range from a simple slideshow to a complex game. The big advantage of Hollywood is, that it does all the framework for you. You do not have to care for example, if your application is going to run on a ECS, OCS, AGA or RTG system. You do not have to care if the Workbench screen your application runs on has 16 or 16.7 million colors. You can concentrate yourself on the important thing which is your application and not its enviroment.

Hollywood is fully 24 bit enhanced which means that you do not have to mess around with palettes, remapping and so on. Additionally it is fully integrated into AmigaOS(tm) and does not rely on a specific custom hardware. Therefore Hollywood does also run on emulations like Amithlon or WinUAE with amazing speed.

Using the Hollywood script language, the possibilities are almost unlimited. The basic version of Hollywood comes with over 150 functions that range from disk operating system (DOS) functions to functions that allow you to smoothly scroll animations and graphics on your display. There are also many functions that allow you to display objects, pictures and texts with over 50 cool transition effects or scale graphics and animations. You can also fade objects, texts and pictures smoothly.

Hollywood uses the datatypes system to load all graphics, animations and sounds which allows you to use all formats you have datatypes for. Additionally it supports unique things like transparent windows which enhance the look-and-feel of your Workbench screen amazingly. You can use true type fonts (with anti-aliasing), standard bitmap fonts and even the cool Amiga color fonts with Hollywood.

The integrated sound system allows you to play various types of music modules (including Protracker and OctaMED) but also sound samples. You have full control over this system because you can specify which channels to use for play back.

Hollywood is a high-end application that needs some memory to work best. It uses a special preload system so that all data is immediately accessible and the play back is incredibly fast. Therefore it is advised that you have lots of memory (16 megabytes+) and also run a RTG system like Picasso96 or CyberGraphX.

Hollywood is the absolutely number one choice in Amiga(tm) Multimedia nowadays and brings the Amiga back to its roots...Multimedia! It comes with a compiler which can save your applications as stand alone Amiga executables which may be freely distributed.

Hollywood is delivered on CD-ROM with many examples on it as well as over 250 kilobyte of documentation in AmigaGuide format. It is only available directly from the author.

Although all this may sound a bit complicated to you, it is very easy. Programming skills are not necessary. They are only of use if you want to create complex applications but for the normal Hollywood usage, you do not need them because Hollywood is really easy to handle.

Computer City: Amiga keyboards - Cherry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition now available
The Dutch retailer Computer City announces that the Amiga keyboards with Amiga logo can now be delivered after some problems. The product line is called 'Chrerry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition'. Read the original message now.

The 'Cherry Cybo@rd Amiga Edition' keyboard from Computer City
Here is what happened so far:

-We approached Cherry to ask about the possibilities for their Cybo@rd series. They told us they assembled the keys to the keyboards and then 'lasered' the characters onto them. This means a huge qty to buy for each different country layout. The alternative would be for us to order single keycaps, so we (or any other dealer) could order localised versions of the keyboard and replace the keys. They told us that the left and right windows keys were equal (mark 1). The delivery time was to be 6 weeks.
-We ordered them, received them after about 12 weeks (!) and had them printed professionally, with special treatment so they keys wouldn't wear off.

-We received the keys. Remember mark 1? The left and right keys turned out to be different :-(
-We realised we had only left keys so we ordered the right (right) keys as well and had them printed etc. too. This took another 5 weeks or so.
-We got the keys in today and they are available NOW. We are in the proces of stocking the keyboards now, so all pre-orders will be sent out next week and dealers should be able to order and supply either the sets of keycaps or complete keyboards.

For the record; this is a fully official Amiga-licensed product. We have a trademark and logo license with Amiga, inc. and they have approved this design :-)

Cheers,
Ron

Amiga Inc.: New Executive update
Following the title link you can find the latest Executive update by Bill McEwen. Some new products are announced, among others several "Game Packs" for Smartphones and PocketPCs. These products will be distributed obviously via big retailer groups in the USA and in England. Furthermore it is explained why the Amiga Inc. bureaus couldn't be reached (they moved to other rooms):

Bill McEwen - November 2, 2002
Greetings One and All:

What a great weekend is in store for Amiga and those attending the World of Amiga, and for those of you not attending I am sure that you will be pleased with the progress that we have made as a company towards shipping new products.

As you may remember from our last update we have broken up the company into two separate units. We have the desktop team focusing their attention on the AmigaOne and OS 4.0, and we have the Mobile Team who is focusing their attention on Amiga Anywhere and the content creation and distribution on the various products and platforms that we support.

These changes and the amazing hard work is now ready to be shown and announced to all of you. Not only are you going to see new products, but we have been able to sign up some pretty heavy hitters with regards to new distribution and new retail availability of these new products.

The Desktop team is focused on new products and services for the Amiga community, and the Mobile team is focused on products and services that are for the extended Amiga community, with our initial offerings targeted at the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and the SmartPhone. Our first customer for the SmartPhone was announced with Sendo as our partner for their Z100 phone, and now you will read about our next offering for PocketPC and PocketPC phone edition below.

Now we can begin the transformation from a development company to a company shipping products that you are able to go out and purchase for yourselves.

With the above mentioned, here we go:
  1. The office is moving and we will have the new address, and contact information up in the next week. So there is no need to worry about what is happening with the office, the change has been good for us. We needed to move into an area that is closer to the services and to the companies that we are working with.
  2. AmigaOne is ready to fly, and I have attached the news from Eyetech here with this update. So congratulations to all and the community for your new Amiga hardware.
  3. OS 4.0 is almost complete, and the Hyperion team is working very hard to get everything ready. They were delayed by having to complete some low-level work on the AmigaOne, and with their work completed they are ready to crank out the last remaining bit of work to provide a stellar achievement and package.
  4. There will be some announcements coming in the next couple of weeks from third parties who are now creating versions of their software for OS 4.0 and I have agreed not to steal their thunder but will have them make their own announcements first and then we will carry them on our site after they have made them.
  5. Amiga Games Pocket Paks will be available around the Thanksgiving holidays through several resellers in the US and in England, including CompUSA and mmO2 in England. Yes, what you are reading is correct. Amiga Games Pocket Paks volumes one and two will be shipping and ready this year at 29.95 each from several authorized retailers in the US and through mmO2 retail locations in England. These Pocket Paks include 4 game titles each, and we have two more packs following. This is great news as thousands of new customers here and in England are going to be able to experience Amiga Content on their Pocket PC, and Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.
  6. Amiga is also making available for release before Christmas Amiga SmartPhone Packs. These will be similar to the Pocket Paks, but targeted for the new SmartPhones coming out this year. As you know they will run on the new Sendo Z100, and they will be available for the new phones being offered by Orange also.
There are several more product announcements and partnerships coming in the next few weeks, but as mentioned before until it is real and ready, we will wait. So some very big news with the readiness of the AmigaOne and OS 4.0 within the last 10% of completion, and the availability of Amiga content being sold through National retailers in the US and England, I would have to say that we have been very busy indeed.

So again I thank you for your patience and support, and now the next steps in our development begins. The transformation from development of products to shipment of products, has begun. I am really looking forward to the next grouping of announcements, and product shipments.

Keeping the faith, and keeping it moving forward,

Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team (ps) (Translation: wk)

Eyetech: AmigaOneG3-SE and AmigaOne-XE Earlybird Systems now on sale!
Press release: We're there at last. Since the previous update to the AmigaOne section over 6 months ago the AmigaOne boards have been in the hands of our developers, and as a result of their feedback, the original firmware which we were to have shipped with the board (by Softex) has been replaced by specially adopted PPCBoot code. That, and identifying - and fixing a small problem with the Articia northbridge chip - have resulted in us holding back shipments of the consumer version of the AmigaOneG3-SE. That is until now!

During this period work has also continued with the AmigaOne-XE design (which has replaceable cpu modules). This design is now ready to go into production alongside the AmigaOneG3-SE. And perhaps the best news of all is that the G4 cpu is now available in moderate quantities, on acceptable delivery and price terms such that we are now able to offer a G4-based AmigaOne-XE at the same time as our public launch of the AmigaOneG3-SE.

The upshot is that we are taking orders for both the 600MHz G3-based AmigaOneG3-SE, and the 800MHz G4-based AmigaOne-XE, starting at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!). A 700MHz G3 (750FX cpu) version of the AmigaOne-XE will be made available - at reduced cost - early in 2003.

But what about OS4 I hear you say - is that now ready? OS4 is now highly advanced, but no, is not currently ready for shipping, largely because Hyperion have had to divert a considerable amount of their time and effort in sorting out the AmigaOne's PPCBoot firmware. Our best estimate is that OS4 for the AmigaOne will ship early in 2003.

So why order an AmigaOne now? Well over the last six months we have had overwhelming demand from both dealers and individuals to ship the AmigaOne hardware - both boards and pre-built systems - now, together with LinuxPPC and UAE, in advance of OS4 being available. In addition this 'Earlybird' offer this also helps us spread the testing, assembly and despatch operations of the AmigaOne boards and systems over a number of weeks, which in turn helps us keep our own costs in check. So, in return, we are offering all users who wish to take up this 'Earlybird' offer a free, registered, copy of OS4 for the AmigaOne as soon as it becomes available. The Earlybird 'free OS4' offer represents a saving of around 12% on an AmigaOneG3-SE motherboard

This of course will not suit everybody, and if you want a switch-on-and-go AmigaOne system then this Earlybird offer is not for you. In this case we're afraid that you have a few more weeks to wait. However if it does suit you then don't delay - this offer is for boards and systems ordered up to and including 31st December 2002 or when OS4 becomes available, whichever comes first. Thereafter OS4 will become a separately chargeable item

As for prices, these have been revised to reflect currency movements since they were originally announced last March, particularly the weakness of the US dollar. Your local dealer will have the local currency prices for the AmigaOne outside the UK and the Eurozone. However the suggested prices in Europe - in UKP and Euro's - are as follows:

Board CPU UKP Euro
AmigaOneG3-SE G3 750CXe@600MHz 360.00 580.00
AmigaOne-XE G3 750FX@700MHz 450.00 725.00
AmigaOne-XE G4 7451@800MHz 500.00 800.00

These prices exclude local taxes, shipping and (apart from the Earlybird offer) OS4.

As far as complete systems are concerned, your local dealer will be able to provide quotations for standard and custom built configurations. Sample prices and configurations for systems which we ourselves offer in the UK are here.

Below is a table listing the comparative features of the AmigaOneG3-SE and the G3 and G4 versions of the AmigaOne-XE.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

Happy Halloween to those who celebrate the holiday! It may be
appropriate that this issue of "Amiga Update" goes out tonight since
Halloween is the day for frightening "things" and in some ways we
might call this past month a frightening month. We didn't see much in
the way of Amiga news to send your way. A lot of what we did find
related to upcoming planned projects, beta releases and utilities
designed for specialized uses. There was no Executive Update from
Amiga either. I like it much more when the Amiga community makes a lot
of interesting noise. Silence is scary.
However, as is usually the case, there are interesting things going
on in the Community. We have stories on many of them below.
There's also some potentially interesting news from IBM. On the 15th
of the month, IBM announced the 1.8GHz Power PC 970 at the
Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, California. This new chip has the
potential of bringing true 64 bit desktop computing to the Amiga
community down the road in the Amiga1 line. We'll have to see how
this develops. Right now, I'd just be happy for readily available,
complete Amiga1 machines ... haven't seen them yet.
We hope you enjoy this issue, and we also hope for much more to
report to you next time around. Time will tell.

 Brad Webb,

Typical, you wait ages and then you get new games to buy all at once.

With only one week to go to, we have the pleasure to announce that
there will be THREE new Amiga games releases for you to buy at the
World of Amiga Southeast Show 2002.

 (In alphabetical order)

Quake II. - Hyperion-Entertainment/ID Software. A game that needs no
introduction. Yes! Not only will you be able to play QUAKE II at WOASE
on the Amiga Area, but thanks to some nifty work by the guys at
Hyperion, you will be able to buy it as well! Copies are being sent by
special courier from Germany to the UK, in time for the show! Be

Software Tycoon - Epic Interactive. It's 1982. Small computer games
companies are springing up in the bedrooms around the world. A new
business beckons, where everything is in your hands. You have total
control, from creating the original concept, through hiring staff and
packaging design, to the development of massive marketing campaigns.
Do you have the skills to create and use new technologies and become a
Software Tycoon?

various computing platforms. You live in a world far away from our
civilization, comparable to the Middle Ages. In this world there
exists man, dwarves, dragons, and a lot of other races. There is
magic, there are druids and dungeons. You can fight, trade,
investigate, build cities, raise taxes and make peace contracts. Your
aim is to reign your empire and to survive against other opponents.

 What's going on?

The Ottawa Amiga Show will have Amiga retailers selling products and
developers showing off their latest programs.

The retailers are Cinereal of Ottawa, Downtown Amiga from Montreal,
and Livewire Systems of Ottawa. Livewire systems has indicated they
will have 2 Amithlon systems, some Elbox hardware products, Quake two
and more! Cinereal will be demonstrating Matrox video editing
solutions as well as selling Amiga software and hardware.

ACK Software Controls from Niagara Falls will be demonstrating the
AmigaOne, the first new Amiga hardware since 1993, and a modified
Amiga 4000T, the last classic Amiga model produced.

Admission to the show is free.

Technomages will be on hand demonstrating their latest AmigaDE/AA
titles including Eric Schwartz Puzzles, Memory and others.

ZEE4 of Toronto will be on-hand demonstrating their brand new Amiga
DE offerings.

There will be several systems running demonstrations of Amiga Digital
Environment content.

After the show ends, there will be a post-show supper at the Royal
Oak, the regular meeting place of Amiga.info open to everyone who
wishes to attend. As usual, we will take over the basement.

We will likely have a webcam for those of you who can not make it to
Ottawa. Once it is ready, we will post the address.

When is the show?

The Ottawa Amiga Show is taking place on November 9, 2002. Doors open
to the public at 11:00am, and the show ends at 4:00pm. People should
arrive at the Royal Oak for around 5:30pm.

 Where is the show?

The show is quite easy to get to from just about everywhere. The map
page will show you how to get to the show.

 Why have a show?

There are two reasons - the first being that the Amiga computer and
operating system may have fallen from the mainstream, but to this day
there are dedicated users to use the Amiga for a wide range of uses,
including email, surfing the web, video editing, graphics work, and
many others.

Amiga Inc's new Digital Environment (DE) is an excellent platform for
developing software that needs to run everywhere - on PCs, on PDAs, on
cellphone and a myriad of other devices. Programming for DE is written
once, in either Java, C, or VP Assember, and from there will run on
any AmigaDE enabled device.

Any questions about the Ottawa Amiga show can be directed to
amigashow@technomages.net.

Some great stuff now online, and hopefully a few more cool new things
in the immediate future, too (stay tuned) :) http://www.amigau.com

We've got some cool new stuff online for you:

 Site Mirrors: (http://www.amigau.com/sitearchives.htm)

 - Amiga Source is now mirrored on our site, thanks Scott!

 - we still maintain site mirrors of the excellent Blitz Basic,
Samplitude Opus (with software downloads) and Amiga Interactive Guide
sites, too.

 Site Archives:

We have added two GREAT Amiga site archives from the somewhat recent
past:

 - National Amiga tech pages: these are full of great tech
information, including pinouts, motherboard configs and lots of
accelerator information - These were originally done by Greg Scott and
used to be on National Amiga's website - thanks to Larry S. and Joe at
Archtech in London, Ontario!

 - Spock's Logical Amiga Pages: As many of you may remember, this was
a great site that has been offline for some time, unfortunately due to
its author, Eric Robertson, passing on last fall. Thanks to Donald
Sowell for providing this data as hopefully a little memorial to
Eric's fondness for the Amiga and his excellent site.

 - Amiga Realm archive mirrors (12 of them) - Thanks to Paul Andrews
for providing data to mirror their site archives!

 Additional stuff:

303Tracker - this is a cool Roland TB303 emulator you can run on your
Amiga - software downloads included - thanks to Jeroen Schellekens for
his site archive and software (http://www.amigau.com/c-music/303t.htm)

 Events page:

We have added an easy to find Events page for upcoming Amiga events &
shows, and we pledge to keep it current! :) If you have an event or
show coming up anywhere in the world, let us know so we can post it
immediately. (http://www.amigau.com/events.htm)

Thanks, keep on coming back and if you have additional Amiga sites
for us to help you mirror or archive (to preserve them), just let us
know when/how. :)

DVD edition of 'The Deathbed Vigil and other tales of digital angst'

Dave Haynie is in the final stages of the preparation of a DVD
edition of 'The Deathbed Vigil and other tales of digital angst'. For
those who've been living, well, in the normal mainstream of modern
life and don't know this, this is the film he made about the end of
Commodore.
Says Dave: "As usual with DVDs, I've been trying to think of some
useful, interesting, or fun 'extra stuff' to put on the disc. I have
too much stuff, basically, but in my continual search for meaning and
all that crap, I came up with the idea of 'IMPACT '. Basically, with
the Amiga as we know it pretty much moved from the single most
revolutionary personal computer in history to more of a footnote in
history, just what WAS its impact. I can play with words, but the
question is too large, and too personal, for just one input. So I've
decided to solicit answer to this basic question: what was/is the
Amiga's impact. On you, on the industry, on life on earth. I know a
piece of it. Some of you may have more to add. So, here's the game.
Think of it as a contest, or whatever. Simply put, you write up a
paragraph; something succinct, or you'll get edited, even if I like
what you said. It needs to fit on one 4:3 TV frame at NTSC resolution,
in quasi-readable type.
"Send whatever you like to me at dhaynie@jersey.net. Put "[DBV]" in
the subject, and your preferred name at the end. I'll put the best
ones on the DVD."

Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper

four-in-one controller for
emulation support

The third generation of Catweasel controllers shows again that
Catweasel has always been a bit more than just a floppy controller. If
you have started an emulator on a modern computer, you'll know that a
lot of things are different from the original machine. The new
computer can't read the original disks, the old joysticks don't fit,
and the keyboard has a lot of keys in a place that you're not used to.
Once you have adjusted to the new situation, bad sound effects or
music that just doesn't sound like what you've heard over and over
again more than ten years ago spoils the party.

Catweasel MK3 solves all of these problems.

As the name already tells, it's a PCI board for modern PCs, MACs and
the new computers AmigaOne and Pegasos. The surname "Flipper" suggests
that there's more to this interface. The new Catweasel is a so-called
flipcard, it can be plugged into the Zorro-slot of a classic-Amiga.
Even if you don't have one of these bus systems, there's another
connector for the clock-port of an Amiga 1200 - a small pin header on
the

motherboard of the computer that's connected with a cable.

The main purpose of the Catweasel has always been to allow access to
non-standard disks using normal PC-diskdrives, even if you usually
need a completely different computer for that. The capacity of the
drive does not matter in this case: A 5,25 inch drive with 1,2MByte
capacity will read and write a C-64 disk with 170KByte as well as a
3,5 inch drive with 1,44MByte can access a 1,76MByte Amiga disk.
Together with a company that has specialized in data recovery, we're
working on the implementation of more than 1100 different disk
formats, and it does not matter that this has been classified
impossible by others before. Even the 800KByte disks from older
Macintosh computers can be used in standard 1,44MB drives, although
the original drives have rotated their disks at variable speeds. You
can get a complete overview over the supported formats in the
technical data. Even if the format you desire is not yet supported, it
only requires a driver update to get new features out of the
controller.

To bring the real feeling of the old games to new computers, the
Catweasel MK3 has two connectors for so-called digital joysticks. This
is the type of joystick that has been used by many computers of the
80s like C-64, VIC-20, Atari and Amiga. The connector was the same on
all these computers: A 9-pin Sub-D. Analog joysticks of that time
(so-called paddles) can also be used.

Emulation does not necessarily mean to bring nostalgia to your
computer. AmigaOS XL and Amithlon bring an operating system to the
PC-world that is superior to the mainstream systems in many respects.
A lot of users of that software wanted to use real Amiga keyboards on
the PC, that's why the Catweasel MK3 has a mini-DIN connector for an
A4000 keyboard. If you want to use an A2000 or A3000 keyboard, this
can be done with a PS2 adapter that should be available in good
PC-shops.

Last but not least, the Catweasel MK3 has an option to use the
original soundchip of the Commodore C-64, also known as SID (Sound
Interface Device). This part of the board has been carefully designed
in order to produce exactly the same sound that the C-64 produced.
There have been other attempts to bring this chip to the PC-world, but
none of them was really satisfying.

Catweasel MK3 does not accept compromise in this matter. Even direct
comparative tests with a real C-64 reveal nearly no differencies. This
is also caused by a real Commodore-Chip that is being used to generate
the SID clock frequency. Luckily, we have a good quantity of these
chips in stock. An additional circuit that is contained on all
Catweasel MK3 can output a fourth voice even out of the later versions
of the SID (type 8580) that could be activated by a software trick on
the old version (type 6581). If you connect the Catweasel MK3 to the
internal CD-connector of your soundcard, you can hear the fourth voice
on a separate channel if you like.

Prices:

Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper: 84,90 EUR
special cable for Amiga 1200: 5,- EUR
Soundchip 6581 or 8580: 20,- EUR

All prices include the German VAT of 16%. We'll start shipping on
november 25th, 2002.

Requires:

Amiga with 68020 or better OS3.x, TCP/IP stack, CyberGraphx/P96 or
AGA with BlazeWCP, MUI3.8, AHI, identify.library 13.x, NList.mcc,
BetterBalance.mcc (optional), XPK V4.0 (optional)

dynAMIte is a bomberman/dynablaster-clone that can be played (only)
over the internet (TCP/IP) by up to 8 players!

This game runs on your WB and thus multitasks happily with all your
other programs, so just try it and become addicted! =)

---------------

o Fixed a silly bug where a player could have had more than one
remotebomb resulting in hit-galore and serious other problems.

o Active powerups are now displayed in an additional window. See Menu
-> Windows -> Active Power-Ups.

o dynAMIte did not load a newly selected sampleset. Fixed.

o DServer now resets teammode and brings in initial amount of bots
after the last player left the server.

o DServer now also does highscores for teams.

o Added another ARexx command to stop a running game called STOPGAME.

o Added a new ARexx command called DOCHATLINE to DServer. DOCHATLINE
handles the passed string as if it was typed into the chat string
gadget.

o DServer now uses MUI's built in ARexx interface instead of an own
implementation. Because of this I had to change the MUI-Application
base-name to match the old Arexxport name. You have to snapshot some
windows of DServer again.

o Added an option to skip drawing of explosionanimation for blown up
powerups. See "graphics"-menu.

o Added an option to skip redrawing of powerups every 3 frames. See
"graphics"-menu

o Readded SKIPANIMS (skips drawing of bomb explosions) which is now
available from "graphics"-menu.

o dynAMIte crashed on custompuppets if xpkNUKE.library was missing.
Fixed.

o Did some cosmetical changes to DServer prefs.

o Added a button to DServer to log in bots.

o Dead players can't switch slots anymore to get resurrected.

o From now on, dynAMIte uses its own network code
(dynAMIteNET.library) in favour of amarquee.library.

o It's now possible to deactivate any powerup from within DServer.

o If a player used a custompuppet in teammode, the puppetgfx was used
for the whole team the player was in (only in loginscreen). Fixed.

o Removed timestatistics from the bottom of the gamewindow because of
its general usefulness.

o It's now possible to disable smokeeffect used for laser and
kickbombs.

o I've finally rewritten keyboard handling code and removed
dependency on lowlevel.library/GetKey(), so that it's now possible to
control the game from a keyboard connected to a Pegasos. This may also
fix some problems with some keyboard adapters for wintel keyboards.

o Games with one human and n bots caused the gamecounter to be always
decreased by one for every game. Fixed.

o Applied the same changes for timerstuff also to dynAMIte.

o DServer will now save the highscores in a fixed timeinterval
instead of after every game.

o Bots in DServer are now handled by an external client (detonator),
taking load off of DServer.

o When a player logged off during a game, the bombs of this player
left some gfx on the playfield. Fixed.

o Fixed a silly bug in DServer that caused enforcerhits when a user
tried to log into a full/offline server.

o Rewritten timer stuff for DServer to get back some sigs for other
things.

o Shield and other things never ran out for bots. Fixed.

o Observers got games/wins accounted for highscore. Fixed.

o dynAMIte crashed when one of the needed libraries wasn't found.
Fixed.

RC-FTPd offer at WOASE
For the duration of WOASE, I'll be offering rc-ftpd registration for the reduced price of £10, instead of the usual $20 (£13 + commision).

As I'm feeling nice, and am completely broke (petrol and entrance money only), while I'm at WOASE people will be able to register rc-ftpd in cash, in pounds, and in person. I'll take their details and give them a receipt, they'll get the personal keyfile when I get home and email them out :-)

See my website (above) for how to recognise me. (ps)

Andreas Balke has completely redone his website covering his use of an A600 in his car as an MP3 player, and added improved, specialized pictures of the innards, the keyboard, and the side view in the car. In addition to that, he's taking on another project related to mobile Amigas: Frank's Suitcase-Amiga. (ps) (Translation: dm)

AROS: IRC Channel Moves to New Server
The IRC channel of the alternative operating system AROS is now on the Freenode IRC network. You can make the connection at irc.freenode.net, or you can find another Freenode server at www.freenode.net. Long nicknames, nick registration and many other things are possible with this. The channel name is still #aros. (ps) (Translation: dm)

The World's First 32-bit Game Console?
This is not exactly burningly current news, but it is meaningful in an historical context. On my foraging for exotic game consoles I bumped into a very interesting Fujitsu product, the FM Towns Marty.

Fujitsu sold a lot of FM Towns PCs in the late 80s. At some point back then, they decided to develop a game console, and the FM Towns Marty came from that. The Marty was equipped with a 386 at 16 MHz, later there was a 486 version. It also had 2 megs of RAM. For storage there was a CD-ROM drive and a 3.5 inch floppy drive. For the graphics there were special custom chips which made 256 colors from a HiColor palette possible.

But the most interesting thing is: Marty was introduced in 1991! So the CD-32 loses its title as the first 32-bit console in the world to the Fujitsu Marty. By the way Marty may also be the second console to come with a CD-ROM drive (after the PC-Engine).

Because of the close compatibility to the FM Towns PCs there were also a lot of games available, but there were also specialized Marty games, including versions of the Lucas Arts classics Zak McKraken and Monkey Island, and I would guess that these were the best versions of these games, what with 256 colors and not the grisly MIDI music found in the PC version.

Pictures of the FM Towns Marty may be viewed here and here.

Because Marty was not officially sold outside Japan it's difficult to come by information on it. So I suppose the CD-32 could also claim to be the world's first 32-bit game console. (ps) (Translation: dm)

TurboCalc Going Open Source?
There's about a fifty percent chance that TurboCalc will go open source.

Motivated by the free release of AWeb and other programs, I wrote TurboCalc author Michael Friedrich a couple weeks ago, to ask if he might entrust TurboCalc to another programmer or programming group for further development.

Observation: TurboCalc is a spreadsheet (table calculation) program, such as Lotus 1-2-3 (tm) or Excel (tm) for PCs, or MaxiPlan (tm) for the Amiga.

I got an answer the day before yesterday (excerpt):

Subject: RE: Open Source TurboCalc
Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 08:40:51 +0100
...
the idea of open source sounds good, but I am not so sure if others would enjoy working with my code:

300,000 lines of sparsely commented assembler code is not going to be easy to read, even I had some problems with it :-)
....
I'll write you again.
Cordially, Michael

His comments so far. Certainly he will want to confer with Stefan Ossowski of GTI.

To raise some question (and spur discussion):
  • What do past, present (and eventually new) TurboCalc users think of using a further developed TurboCalc? Please don't write a list of requirements of WHAT needs to be improved or added. You'll get a chance to express these comments!

  • Are there programmers who are CAPABLE (this genre is not the simplest) and who WANT to develop Turbocalc further? I'll do what I can to help and encourage as a Betatester from the start.
I'll be happy to hear sincere comments and discussion. (ps) (Translation: dm)
