`13.Dec.1999` Thorsten Willert by e-mail	Problems with ImageFX 4.0 There is a problem with the latest versions of ImageFX 4.0 and 4.1 under AmigaOS 3.5. Cycle gadgets are not displayed! Obviously ImageFX cannot handle the chooser.gadget version of 3.5. Haage & Partner and Nova Design have already been notified by me. I have created a little patch in the meantime, patching ImageFX to make use of the chooser.gadget from the Aminet ClassAct demo, so the program is at least usable. The patch should appear in Aminet soon: gfx/ifx/IFX-patcher.lha. The patch and more information about it is available from my homepage (title link) under ARexx-Scripts. And one hint for ImageFX 4.0 CD: The installation cannot be started from CD, since the Installer icon and the script have different names. There you are owning an "Amiga compatible" console and cannot access all games... Solution: home made! We (Christian Steiner and myself) succeeded in burning the Shareware game "Sharks!" (coded by Christian, demo on Aminet) to CD and make it run on an Amiga CD32. This is owed to Michael Ulbrich, who gave me many hints. Due to his help, it worked on first try. Many thanks to Michael! Why I am writing this? I would like to know if there is interest in expanding this game as CD32 version. I mean if noone would want the game, it isn't worth the time to "pep it up". And there are license issues to clarify. You need a "Trademark File", which had to be licensed from Amiga (at least in Commodore times). I will write to Amiga Int. if this is still necessary, and how much it would cost. So write me if you are interested in a CD32 version of Sharks!. Besides, Sharks! does not have to be our last game for CD32. We can of course release other (self written) games in CD versions. It allows you to create grey alpha masks, which you, after once calculated, can keep and composite with other images later. For people, who are not familiar with alpha masks; Think about a stamp or actually it's edges. This plug-in can create you a stamp shaped image and mask with smooth edges. You can then composite it to a bigger image. Ofcourse there are other more complex effects, than simple edge effects. This could be great tool for one, who is creating graphics for video. To encode MPEG files, the package relies on the LAME encoder. The audio tracks can be loaded and converted to MPEG audio files directly from the audio CD. In a nutshell: Starting January 1st, 2000, I will work full time for REBOL Technologies, and will therefore not be able to spend as much time on Amiga software development as I used to. I will move from Florida to California, which may cause some service outages of my Internet presence and delays during the months of December '99 and January 2000. All of my Amiga software is still supported, except for Daytona, which unfortunately has to be cancelled, because of lack of time and a conflict of interest regarding Java and REBOL. Kleinert by e-mail	PNG and Amiga The book "PNG - The Definite Guide", by Greg Roelofs, O'Reilly, ISBN 1-56592-542-4, mentions the Amiga positively for a change: Especially considering PNG, it is very easy to support new file formats in Amiga browsers by using Datatypes... to briefly cite the book (p.36): "On the Amiga, it is ubiquitous, thanks to a technological marvel, known as datatypes, (a kind of super-DLL that, among other things, provides generic image support); but under operating systems like BeOS or Atari TOS, it is virtually nonexistent." Of course this leads to Amiga WWW browsers and a collection of Amiga tools and applications get very good comments (some from myself, too ;) The book is also very open towards other alternative platforms (Acorn, BeOS, Macintosh, NextStep, OS/2). These cards were gone some hours after the announcement. This was unsatisfactory for Katodev. The cooperation of Katodev, Gruner and DCE now makes it possible to initiate a small production run. Special thanks goes to DCE. Save the expansion port, the card is identical to the one offered until one year ago. If your order was declined, ignore it for the time being. sales@katodev.de should contact you explaining the additional availability. After this, however, Melody-Z2 is done for sure. The MPEG1-DSP used (layer 1+2) is no longer available. Melody1200Plus (only this option, because of the same DSP being used) is also running out of production. We want to warn, however, not to see Melody-Z2 as a replacement for the Melody1200-series. Melody-Z2 was intended as Paula replacement (plus MP2 hardware interesting back then). Melody1200 is much better from both a functional and quality point of view. We recommend preferring the Unity+Melody1200xxx solution, in the very least compare them. `29.Nov.1999` Michaela Prüß in ANF	Installer v3.1, v3.5, ...NG, New... (get a script first!) Currently more and more news are read about different Installer programs. Not only OS3.5 has finally brought an update to the old C= Installer, "the others" are active, too. But to be honest, it's not about looking better and having more features, but who is most compatible and handles script errors best. It's because the scripts are the weak spot, not the Installer. Installer is much more capable than most people are aware of. Well, I am right now facing the task of writing such a script myself, and so I came up with the idea to create a library with functions. After some talks with several people, it changed into something completely different, an Installer Script Maker. Right now in beta demo v0.1 (0.2 in the pipe), it should quickly turn into an Installer make system. The whole thing is an Installer script itself. This means that someone wanting to write a script will simply have to start the Installer, edit the basic rules and wait. Of course some little C programs are running in the background to simplify things. The complete system will be expandable on a modular layer, create scripts as uniform as possible (created from ready modules) which will be protected against errors as good as possible with growing usage and experience. I hope this will finally bring us error tolerant installations handled in a uniform manner. Extras like backing up system files before overwrite, or ready translations of standard functions in as many languages as possible will be only a small step from there. If you want to see how the first attempts looked like (no longer up-to-date), I posted the beta 0.1 on my homepage. The documentation is English for now, so a maximum number of people understand it. In both cases the SOFTWARE RENDERER was used. Hardware Data: Amiga: Cyberstorm PPC 604e 150 MHz (yes, only 150, i have a lowend 604e Board...) Cybervision/PPC OS: AmigaOS 3.0 (3.5 is ordered, but not yet arrived)+ WarpOS V4 PC: Pentium II 300 MHz Riva TNT (TNT 1) Based AGP-Bus Graphics Board OS: Windows 95 Remember: All speed is done with SOFTWARE RENDERER, for both systems, for fairness :) The values (i tested at different places, but of course PC and Amiga version were always tested at the same place): Level Amiga Speed (150 MHz) PC Speed (300 MHz) dmandoria 31 fps 60 fps oglemine1 35 fps 72 fps oglemine1 different location with 24 fps 45 fps lots of monsters visible hive1 (lot of transparency FX) 9 fps 27 fps no typical situation for the game And now some values in a higher resolution: Startlevel in 400x300 24 fps 41 fps Startlevel in 640x480 10 fps 19 fps On an average i was usually (in 320x240) at: 25-30 fps around 50-70 fps I estimate on a 233 MHz the average should be around 40-50 fps in typical situations... What do we learn of this ? 1. On an average the Amiga Version has the same speed like the PC version (at least if we had a PC with the same MHz-number, 31*2 = 62 fps for example, where the PC version had 60 fps, the Amiga Version 31 fps (first example) 2. Massive Transparency Effects are the death for every software-renderer, no matter if Amiga or PC. Luckily these effects are not displayed all the time. Situations like at the start of hive1 only happen in very few situations (hive1 is actually the slowest level in the whole game, it seems, at least at a certain position in the level) 3. The speed value of Heretic II is actually quite nice, even on a lowend PPC like mine, on a 233 MHz you will have values around 233/150 times as fast. 4. We can expect much more from 3D Hardware (Warp3D Support) (On PC there was a REALLY HUGE speedup for 3D Hardware, especially when Transparency was involved) 5. PCI/AGP did not give that much more speed than PowerUP-Bus/Zorro 3 (i did not do actual speedtests of Z3, but it is not that much slower than on Zorro 3. Also WB Window Mode is also not that much slower - though of course slower) I was also told by Hyperion that they are currently making much progress for the 68k version, and that it looks good that probably 060+software renderer will be fast enough to get the game playable. Result is that the author is allowed to work on the Amiga version of Soundprobe in December and January. Now, since the HEW '99, there are enough pre-orders to bring the card to production. The planned price range can drop significantly if more pre-orders are collected. sales@katodev.de The hardware support is already implemented transparently in the Melody driver system. MEDIO is an expansion for Melody1200 offering digital, lossless line-in and line-out. To make clear how it works, the concept of Melody1200 has to be made clear first, since such an high-end design is unknown otherwise on the Amiga. Melody1200 consists of two cards called the analogous and digital part. Between these cards, a digital bus system is implemented by a flat cable (AD/DA conversion is done on the analogous part). To this bus system, e.g. Medio can be added with an optional plug (optionally more than one). Melody1200xxx works with 8, 16 and 20 bit, digitally with 8, 16 and 24 bit. For faster operation, we recommend using Unity in Zorro systems. A complete description of the hardware functios (routing without CPU, affecting Copybit, A-LAN etc.) would be too big here. REBOL is looking for people interested in testing the module and giving feedback about reliability, stability and features of the module to the REBOL Apache Development Team. The pre-beta will only be available for some Unix Apache versions ranging from 1.3.4 up to the latest 1.3.9. Additionally, httpd must be compiled as Dynamic Shared Object (mod_so). "Foundation" and "Foundation Director's Cut", short FoundationDC, which is distributed by Epic Marketing. FoundationDC is for all purposes a re-edited issue of Foundation, which you only have to buy if you don't already own Foundation. Since FoundationDC has a different file layout, it has been hard for the Author Paul Burkey to create an update which is compatible to both versions. Amiga International had their large booth set up, and seemed to generate a fair amount of interest. We weren't there, but are told Petro Tyschtschenko was (almost) as upbeat as ever. However, reflecting reality, there were fewer vendors than last year. The mood was reportedly less positive, but that seemed to be based mainly on there being no clear direction to the future, not fears of an imminent death of the Amiga market. The folks at Haage & Partner demonstrated a 400 Mhz G3 Power PC board, based on the IBM CHRP spec. It also featured PCI and AGP slots. There are rumors a native PPC based AmigaOS port is being considered for this board. If so, that's the most realistic possibility for a future Amiga system we've seen yet. We understand the board was presented as a development system though, not as a future Amiga. However, and perhaps very significantly, Petro T. is quoted in an article about HEW on the amiga.org website as stating "My first priority now is to convert the OS to the PowerPC." Indications are that Haage & Partner are willing to do the conversion. Is Amiga willing to license it, providing the formal approval to call it Amiga? We don't know, but feel this would be important to keep developers focused, instead of trying to cover many different future possibilities and spreading themselves too thinly. If CHRP can be abandoned in order to bring down the price of a PPC board, then the future looks even better for a PPC system. There are indications that this could become possible, with IBM leading the way to a less expensive PPC standard. As we hear more about possible Amiga PPC futures, we'll let you know. The Met@Box (AmiJoeG3) G3 Board for the A1200 was also demonstrated at the Cologne Show. This is a PowerPC based accelerator, which does not sport a 68K co-processor. Also of interest was the Unity Net Ethernet card. We've a story on that product below. Finally, once again there was no BoXeR Computer to be seen, or so we've been told. Over at Deja.com, a poll is being held on the most popular operating system. Looks like the voting may be in several stages on different features. Regardless, when we checked in Amiga OS was actually leading the voting! It was way ahead of MonopolySoft's Windoze, and even ahead of Linux. Most interesting and yes, it left me with a very smug feeling. And, despite the current situation in the Amiga market, there's a lot for you to read in this issue. We hope you enjoy it. It was in response to another readers letter and concerned other attempts to revive the amiga other than the official Amiga company. You stated that you didn't think that it was appropriate for this news-letter to cover the other attempts to revive the Amiga such as the A.R.P. or the work at QNX. Why not? Doesn't this put all your eggs into one basket? And also is this the only feasible way that the best solution to reviving the Amiga will be attained? Thanks - Jim ~~~~~~ Jim, First, my apologies for shortening your letter, but space considerations made that necessary. You ask a very good question. What I had to do to your letter points to the answer - we just don't have the space to cover all the permutations out there. We also don't have the staff or the time. I wish we did. What we will do is cover the Amiga itself, whatever that might be going forward, until such time as it seems appropriate to drop the Amiga entirely in favor of something else - if that ever happens. (If we do get to that point, we'll share the decision with you, the readers.) We will also cover whatever looks to us to be the leading efforts in the "alternative Amigas" field. And finally, we will also cover to some extent significant events in all Amiga related areas, where these events seem to have some real promise for the Amiga community. This is a pretty complicated mission statement, but we've actually been doing this for some time and it seems to be working. I have no doubt we could miss something significant along the way but we'll try to avoid that. If we do, I'm pretty sure some readers will call our attention to the event, and we'll then try to get the word to the rest. It contained less than 2 dozen usable 4000 motherboards." Now this was casual conversation between 4 of us, but I have no reason to doubt it's truthfullness. Petro did make it possible for me to launch the CDTV 3.1 upgrade project, and that was all verbal between him and me in March of 98. Regards, Brad ====== 19 Oct 1999 There used to be a document on the Amiga Inc. web page concerning Y2K issues with the Amiga. I haven't been there in quite a while, so I don't know if it's still there. If it's not still there, I'm sure there are plenty who know all the gritty details. But... As far as I can remember, Workbench will have no trouble, but AmigaDOS itself doesn't handle four digit dates. You might get invalid date stamps on files. Hopefully the guys at H&P have addressed this in OS 3.5 or working on it for 3.6(?). As for the RTC {Real Time Clock, we presume. Brad}, that's another issue. As I recall, the document stated that the RTC found in the A2000 is not Y2K compliant. The only possible fix is a software patch to the OS. We didn't notice anything in particular about the A2000, but the different versions of the operating system, the clocks, etc., have different considerations. '99 Robert Jant, chief of a group of former Iwin employees, has announced today that he together with other former Iwin employees and with the help of a large German bank has bought back the rights for the Internet domains www.iwin-corp.com and www.iwin-corp.ge, furthermore the rights for the name Iwin Corporation and for the projects of the C-Series and Server computers. "It was a logical decision" said Robert Jant. "Focke Systems didn't want to continue development of the C-Series and Servers and didn't want to sell them either. "This is the reason why we have decided to try to buy back the rights on them. We were working very hard for a long time on these projects and didn't want to see them frozen. We know that it will be a very hard way to finish the projects and bring them into the stores. We won't bring these computers into the stores as it was initially planned, but we are sure they will be successful." Iwin Corporation will open again on the 15 of November 1999 and will also ship the first computers on this date to dealers. On the 15 of November, Iwin Corporation will also again be reachable by phone, fax and email. {Since this press release was issued, Iwin sites are indeed back in operation. The computers now include something called the G-MCC, I-MCC and iPhantom computers all of which reference Amiga compatibility. We feel our organisation is unique in the Amiga community. We have tried to understand both the needs of the Amiga community, balanced against the needs of Amiga, Inc. We do not believe, like some in the community, that the wishes of the Amiga community and the needs of Amiga, Inc. are mutually exclusive. As you can guess from the title, it is basically founded on tennis game, but its goal is to eliminate your opponents, not simply to defeat them!!! To this purpose, players might make use of loads of Mortal-Kombat and Street-Fighter-like special moves, in addition to many others, directly taken from lots of famous videogames or films. Besides, there are bombs, Fire'n'forget rockets, heat-seeking missiles at their complete disposal... The game boasts an amusing animated intro which will explain the reason of such a strange tournamnet - by the way, your order is to climb a high mountain, just like the second episode of the Mortal Kombat saga; moreover, it features several victory and defeat pictures and an even more crazy final sequence than the intro!! Players can choose their characters from a range of twelve different guys, each distinguished with typical characteristics, which can be edited in the proper menu. Our first project "Newtron" became one step more professional by it. With the name, two new members joined the team: Costel Mincea will be our graphician, responsibler for intro and animations. Oliver Schuler should already be known to many for his Amiga port of glTron. He will support us for exsample with 3D calculating functions for normal vectors (needed for light effects and textures). Please be informed that the project Newtron now has a new name: As finished game it will be named "Light Force", and probably be released on CD. Since the namechange, the old internet site is no longer available. Informations about Light Force has been completely integrated into our LA-Workbench, and is available under the title link. There is also a new demo version available! The demo now has 1 or 2 player mode optionally, various perspectives, collision control, improved controlling options (especially mouse control!), sadly still rather stupid opponents, score is already counted etc! Give it a try! With regret we have to say that so far very little e-mail has been recieved for Newtron! We hope that feedback will improve with the demo version. As long as less than 200 Amiga users are really interested in the game, it is not sure if we will really finish the game. Other "Katodev" designs are currently in the state of changing ownership. This has no negative results for the user, however. &nbps;Some people are individually and officially offering support for the Twister1200 cards by DCE, which is why the Twister Mk2 can be found on the KatoDev website. Since users (like ourselves) have generally bad experiences with support, the people involved have decided to offer first-hand support from developers and engineers! When passed around a turn without getting any more changes, the document would be trimmed, signed and posted on the ML where a few additional changes could take place before it is put on the website. It was suggested that working groups can on occasion be inefficient due to large numbers of people being involved. Therefore perhaps 3-6 people should be the limit per topic. It was felt by some that GPL could be contrary to the aims of KOSH and therefore should be avoided. However there is also the LGPL or Library Gnu Public Licence which applies to libraries. This licence exist to guarantee that the user still has the ability to modify the library under LGPL but not the product using the library (although the product can be GPL). You can charge for distributing LGPL and GPL software as long as this is limited to things like covering media and postage costs for example. See http://www.gnu.org for more information on Gnu. This debate (as with many) is set to continue. e) Subject: KOSH Contacts database Summary of debate: Suggested was a contacts database for KOSH that would include all "known" KOSHans, others who have a slight interest, developers, newspapers, magazines, etc. This would be useful in two ways. Firstly (and obviously) that it would enable easy dissemination of information relevant to KOSH. Secondly it would be a tool to demonstrate that KOSH is definitely alive and well. Summary of debate: John Chandler and Greg Webb and I (Bridge Deady) seem to have become "KOSH UK" in that we are all ahem in the UK, are thinking of KOSH at World of Amiga 2000 in the UK and we also recently took part in a KOSH Q&A session via IRC hosted at the Cologne Fair in Germany. If anyone else is in the UK (or abroad and is willing to fly over) and is interested in a "get together" sometime please let us know as this is something we are thinking of. h) Subject: User Interface Website Summary of debate: See http://www.iarchitect.com/mshame.htm which covers examples of good and bad user interface design. i) Subject: KOSH Virtual Credits and taxation Summary of debate: A query was raised concerning tax laws in countries such as the UK and the KOSH Virtual Credits scheme. In the UK (amongst other countries presumably) virtual credits would be liable for tax but that tax would have to paid in UK pounds sterling. It was discussed that if sales are made to EC countries above a certain threshold (apr £70,000 p.a. for the UK) then the seller must register for VAT in that country. This is something to bare in mind but won't become an issue for a while yet. j) Subject: KOSH web site updated Summary of debate: The KOSH website at http://kosh.convergence.org and http://www.iconimaging,net/kosh amongst others has been updated a number of times since the last summary. Feel free to have a quick browse. k) Subject: EROS goes GPL Summary of debate: EROS have gone GPL. See: http://www.eros-os.org/ and for a discussion on this, http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/10/28/0151212&mode=nes l) Subject: Licencing parts of KOSH Summary of debate: It was suggested that we could make a simple policy over licensing of our software. Whenever any module is withdrawn from our distribution it could be put on a countdown for a fixed period. We have the duration of that period to reverse the decision and put it back in under our own terms, but once that period has expired, the source and binary are released under a simple freeware licence. A similar idea was previously discussed in that software developed for KOSH could be given a particular licence that stated the software would lapse into the public domain if certain criteria had not been fulfilled. At the very least the sources released would be of educational use and would hopefully spark off further development. This idea of software licencing received a favourable response from those that commented on it. It was further suggested that some sort of "auction" of old code could take place to generate funds for KOSH (and the author of the code) before it was placed into a free-ish -ware state. This could however allow large corporations to take over KOSH and therefore a limit on the size of bids would be needed. Even so this could cause problems. If an "auction" was implemented then to prevent corporations from buying code and then leaving it dormant a clause in the auction could be that if a new version of the code updated from the original is not forthcoming after a specified time then the code reverts to being the property of KOSH. Overall the idea of code becoming freeware under a licence as discussed initially received a more favourable response than that of an "auction" based system. None of this is supposed to remove the rights programmers have over their own code. It was then suggested that a version of the Mozilla Public Licence may be appropriate. This allows retention of copyright but opens up the potential for others to develop the code. m) Subject: KAROS (KOSH hosted on AROS) Summary of debate: A discussion on hosting KOSH on AROS was held. At least two ideas were forthcoming: 1) AROS can either run standalone or on another OS such as KOSH (once KOSH itself is running of course), 2) AROS could be used as a basic services provider for KOSH allowing us to implement other things without having to spend a large amount of time getting a filesystem, device drivers, etc written first. This is not to detract from the thoughts on hosting KOSH on Linux, AmigaOS, MacOS, Win32, etc. but merely adds another possibility. AROS is available from: ftp://www.aros.org/pub/aros/ n) Subject: Distribution format Summary of debate: It was suggested that KOSH could be distributed on DVD rather than CD which would then enable a program on the DVD to create a hosted-KOSH CD for any given OS. This would enable one DVD to contain versions of KOSH for a large number of systems. However it is hoped that KOSH will be compact enough not to require a DVD for distribution! It was also mentioned that DVD is still not commmonplace everywhere. o) Subject: Linux, GPL and KOSH Summary of debate: It was queried as to whether an OS running hosted through Linux automatically GPL'd? While the LGPL only covers the module concerned, the GPL infects everything it touches. p) Subject: KOSH featured at the Cologne Fair. Summary of debate: KOSH were kindly invited by Hendrik Hoener of Amiga UGN Germany to take a slot in an IRC conference that they are hosting during the Cologne fair. We were represented by Greg Webb, John Chandler and myself (Bridge Deady). We were slotted in directly after Petro Tyschtschenko of Amiga which provided us with a prominent mid-afternoon position. The current status is: As previously announced, FusionPPC for Amiga was not released on November 20th as scheduled. FusionPPC development for Amiga is continuing as normal. Jim Drew explained that the project is in advanced state of completion, and everything is done to have a release version ready by christmas. Like stated in the prepayment contract, all customers are free to cancel the contract with Microcode Solutions in writing. The money is transferred back within 30 days after recieving the cancelling note. This was stated clearly on the webpage, top of the online ordering form. `20.Nov.1999` Czech Amiga News	Atéo Concepts News The serial driver of the AtéoSer/AtéoIO card now works correctly. Error handling took so much time since it was both a soft- and hardware issue. As a fix for the software there will be an update at the Atéo Concepts website next week. The hardware issue makes a small modification of the Atéo bus necessary, which can be done by yourself - there will be a manual on the website, or you can send in the board after calling in (phone +33 (0)2.40.85.30.85). Atéo has a limited number of A4000 keyboards in stock, which can i.e. be connected directly to the Atéo tower. Price is 36.90 Euro. Atéo bus works correctly with OS 3.5. If problems should occur, the usual patches are to blame. Otherwise try an additional "COLD" argument when calling the 'StartAteoBus' command. Release of the scandoubler has been delayed due to the AtéoSer issues and the prototype being delivered early September instead of end of July, but should be available by the end of the year. Atéo Concepts warns that Picasso96 V2.0 does not work with the Pixel64 due to a bug in the files. When the bug is fixed, a P96 update will be available in the download area. AMIGA International, Inc. The booth of Amiga International was way the biggest and most beautiful one the fair. It took a compressor eight hours to pump up that tremendous Boing-Ball. The Amiga museum was very interesting, where in addition to all the Amiga models ever made the "Walker" were exhibited, which never came to production. The presentation of the operatingsystem update AmigaOS 3.5 was the highlight and of course it was sold at the show. Also A1200 machines and the popular Amiga merchandising products were sold. There were no new Amigas to show and the MCC was off topic, as it became clear during the weeks before the fair. However, there was a developer machine by Haage & Partner exhibited inside of a displaycase at the AMIGA booth. This machine was a POP board from IBM (CHRP), which can be licensed by any developer who wants to produce a big number of pieces. During an interview Jürgen Haage said that Haage & Partner is planing a nativ PPC port of AmigaOS after developing AmgaOS 3.5. The cooperation of AMIGA by giving Haage & Parter the necessary licenses to do so, is the most important assumption to make this come true. Haage & Partner already negotiats with AMIGA. Inside the AMIGA booth guests of Tanja and Taras, Petro's children, were supported with tasty sausages, coffee and other drinks in an outstanding way . Petro Tyschtschenko, president of Amiga International, answerd numerous questions. Many users in a distinct manner showed him their frustration and temper about Gatway's decision to drop the MCC . Various users felt downright cheated by those many not fulfiled promises. All this temper were shaked out on Petro. Surely not an easy job, but in the meantime Petro calles himself a "manager of crisis". Unfortunatly many users don't think of, that Petro was the only one who put something into production, for he cared for the development of the operatingsystem update AmigaOS 3.5 and pushed it. Certainly not to leave behind the music group ANNEX, who delighted the visitors of the fair with several songs an their dance-perfomances. In any case to mention is the visit by Diana and Bob Scharp, who are organizing the Gateway Computer Shows in St. Louis. Furthermore there were many small sub-boothes with Amiga, e.g. the one of Amiga-Club im BTX & Internet and the internet café, which was organizsed by UGN and where the IRC conferences were held - in the meantime usual for any big show. The IRC conferences were organized by Hendrik Höner and Christoph Dietz. The machines for the conferences were at their disposal by Amiga International. At other sub-boothes Amiga magazines like amigaOS, Amiga-Magazin and AmigActive from England were introduced. AmigaPlus were represented at another booth. More sub-boothes are discribed seperately below. Haage & Partner At the booth of Haage & Partner users got the occation to buy a lot of good software. Jürgen Haage, his wife an Markus Nerding as well as many co-workers answered questions of numberless users. For almost every product presentations were shown at the booth. Survey following: STFax 4.0, the ultimate fax solution with 120 professional announcement texts in both, German and English. Many of the features have been enhanced, e.g. remote access, fax on demand, forwarding of faxes and background printing. Furthermore this version contains an enhanced support for USRobotics with improved quality of sound. NetConnect 3.0, the all-in-one internet bundle with Voyager 3.0 incl. Java-script, AmIRC 3, NetInfo 2, the new mFTP as well as MetalWeb, the WYSIWYG HTML editor. Warp3D, the highly optimized 3D driversystem for CyberVison 3D/Virge3D and others. WaruUP, the hightspeed PowerPC kernel for Amiga. StromMESA, an OpenGL compatible graphics library. H&P advertises: The combination of PowerPC, 3D graphics card, WarpOS, Warp3D and StormMESA/OpenGL makes your Amiga a highend machine. Storm DSK, the developer survival kit, containing everything indispensable for professional development. The bundle includes: StromC 3.0 68K ANSI C/C++ Compiler, StormC 3.0 PowerPC ANSI C/C++ Cross-Compiler, StromPowerASM 68K and PowerPC Cross-Assembler, StormWIZZARD V2.2 as current version of the desktop tools, StormMesa - 100% compatible OpenGL library for 68K and PowerPC, Developer CD V1.3 incl. the Amiga Refernz Manuals as AmigaGuide, PowerPC 68K Emulator Beta-Programm. amigaWriter, the Word Processor with multilingual word-division, chapter-management, automatic list of contents, WYSIWYG style footnotes, extensive DTP funktions, pattern documents, enhanced printing, spell checking with correction propositions and support for TrueType. Unfortunatly version 2 wasn't finished in time before the show. Tornado 3D Version 3.0, the incredible 3D rendering and animation programm with complete new GUI and an enormous number of features: clothes and threads, mannequins (human figures), improved particle system/force fields, extended inverse cinematic, sculptor (form editor), support for 3D sounds, animation control assistent, project planer, render engines and much more. For graphics the classics VideoFX 2, X-DVE, FontMachine and of course ArtEffect 3.0 were sold at the show. The grahics programm for picture and video editing and creation of animations, as well as file convertion, ImageFX Version 4.1 is new on the list of H&P. Also PageStream 4.0, the all-in-one DTP bundle incl. drawing funktions, index and list of contents, PDF export, HTML import/export, chapter dependent stile patterns and variables, multiple chapter/page number, manual printing, overview printing, visitingcard and lable printing. The AMIGA Developer CD 2.1 containing all the news for AmigaOS 3.5 and for the previous versions of the operatingsystem was dearly desired. This bundle even includes the StormC 68K C/C++ Compiler Version 3.0 among other software and files . However, the CD doesn't contain the PowerPC-Compiler and Power-Assembler, but if you purchase the CD you obtain the opportunity to get StromC Version 4.0 for a special price. Even a few hardware were offered. One could buy the graphic tablets and the multi I/O card HyperCOM 3+ from VMC, too. Schatztruhe At the booth of Schatztruhe of Stefan Ossowski one could see numerous software and among this a real feast for the eyes: the hand-airbrushed Micronik-Tower of Heinz Andreolla from Rüti in Swizerland. This tower is absolutly unique. Heinz took the tower completely apart, and brushed and painted multiple layers inside and outside of it. The Boing-Balls are sometimes raising, somtimes falling, sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger, sometimes more pale, and sometimes real colourful, telling the history of Amiga, which raised in the begining, then was colourful on top, and - as it looks like by now - slowly disapears into the underground again. A special gimmick on the tower is a little Boing-Ball, which rotates around it's diagonal axis. This ball is driven by a 3.5 voltage ballbearing-engine. It took Heinz two month to work out the tower. Also Heinz together with Oliver Tacke is painting new GlowIcons. Some of the first icons one could already admire at the show. Unfortunatly a few of the icons are still faulty (too small), but those will be corrected and available soon. One could find Urban Müller (Mr. Aminet) at the booth of Schatztruhe, too. We were able to ask him a number of questions about Aminet, which he moderates together with Matthias Scheler. We were interested in who is permitted to upload files to Aminet. Urban explained this to us, and we continued to write notes on it which we tell you in a summary below. First of all everybody is of principle permitted to upload an archiv to Aminet. The archives are collected inside a special directory on the server in Paderborn. Before the archives get on Aminet - and by this on all mirrors - those are beeing checked for viruses and corrupt files. Above all they are verifying if the readme-files are proper. By the way Urban called our attention to the bad habit to include the version number with the filename. A lot of programmers are not able to give up this habit. There are two reasons why this is not good. First the filenames are changing continously and by this programms are hard to link to each other, and second it becomes harder to search for previous versions, cause previous version have to become deleted in order not to let burst the Aminet. So, it would be kind if the version number could be place inside the readme-file. Further we asked Urban, why he dosn't agree with LZX-archives inside the Aminet, since LZX-archives are smaller than LHA-archives. Urban explained, he will agree with LZX-archives on Aminet as soon as LZX will be 100% portable to any operatingsystem. Unfrotunatly this is not possible, yet. What means that a few operatingsystems would be locked out from using LZX-archives. Dr. Greg Perry from GP Software answerd questions of DirOpus users. A patch which fixes problems with AmigaOS 3.5 can be downloaded at the mentioned webside. individual computers - Jens Schönfeld Jens Schönfeld and Jörg 'Schueschmie' Sendrowski showed us the prototype of the new ethernet card. This is a full-sized Zorro card containing 10MBit ethernet and the "usual" expansionports. The card uses RJ45 ("Twisted Pair") as well as BNC ("thin ethernet" or "Lakritz") connectors. Also interesting is the SilveSurfer, a serial port for A1200 and Buddha. For the SilverSurfen even an adapter for A600 is available. This serial port makes up to 460800 Baud, is MIDI compatible and keeps big Fifos for low CPU charge. Additonal to this hardware there was a SCMS-Copybit-Killer. The Copybit-Killer allows multiple digital copying via TOSLINK optical cables between Minidisc, DAT, DCC, CDR and that is the reason why it is only usable for privat purposes. Eyetech Group Ltd Alan Redhouse showed us varaible hardware which is mainly used for industrial applications. Those are several components and modules which are to plug into the floppy port. Those keep an image of a bootdisk. He showed us a karaoke machine which used a small LC display and Scala to display the text of a song, while the music was played from an integrated CDRom drive. The necessary hardware sticks into a 19" shelf, hence is optimal for any insdustrial application. According to Allan Redhouse the Amiga Operatingsystem proved itself as definite stable and reliable, whereas the use of other systems brought up problems and crashes again and again. Amiga Zentrum Thüringen e.V. Wie talked to Kai Mache and Rolf Hoffmann. The AZT, surely known by some users from the "Fun of Computing" , mainly calls themself an address for users wanting to meat and get to know other users, in oder to discuss about their favourit subject and to help each other with problems. The subject of AZT's little sub-booth at Amiga definite was Linux. They lend help and the club also created a CD with all the necessary files to install Linux. Of course there are thorough manuals on the CDRom, too. The CD can also be ordered after the show from Thomas Mache, Lindenberg 59, 98693 Ilmenau, at a price of 25,- DM KATO Development Group Jörn Plewka, Thorsten Gruner and Thorsten Hansen showed us the new Twister 1200 NG, which is produced by DCE. A multi I/O card with automatic dataflow control and 460800 baud independent from the CPU in use. Twister 1200 NG is compatible to the Melody 1200 soundcard. Further we could astonish at the new Zorro 2-fast-ethernet card Unity Net. Here some of the specifications: 100 Mbps and 10 Mbps (100Base-TX and 10Base-T), 64kB databuffer, auto-negotiation IEEE 802.3, full autoconfig (no harware settings needed), full duplex in 10Mbps mode, RJ-45 connection (Twisted Pair), automatic speed detection inside the network and SANA 2-driver. This card will be available in late january 2000 at the earliest. EASys! by Tom Neidhardt EASys! builds an OS enhancement for the standard Workbench, which is 100% compatible to OS3.5, and holds many additional features. Here some of the features: multithreading on WB, www pages as icon, send WB files as email, internet doc (unfoldable), office doc (unfoldable), system doc including drag 'n drop docs for presentations, editor, printing, and global help, and many many more. Further details are available by the link above. EASys! Version 4.6 coming soon on CDRom together with extended background stuff. Innovativ (Felix Schwarz) will deal with the sales. There is a test report for version 3.5 in amigaOS' issue from mai `99. The provisional product "MARInA" fits well as demo for snooping into the software, and is available on Aminet in the aminet/util/wb directory. Vendors We had no extended look at the vendors, but tenor of the conversations was, that there were not enough hardware for sale. Only a few PPC cards, graphics cards and accelaration cards were available at the fair. Nevertheless, the turnovers weren't lower than the year before at all, what after all means that the turnovers might have been much bigger, if there were more hardware for sale at the show. At the booth of COOLbits people could purchase software updates from products of IrseeSoft. Further there were Bühler Elektronik, TGV-Haupt, ACT electronic and Elbox at the show. RBM digitaltechnik First your eyes were catched by the coloured tower cases, which RBM will soon offer painted with any colour wanted. We couldn't disregard the "Swopper", which has nothing to do with Amiga at all but nevertheless is interesting. "Swopper" is a chair like seat, which works like a big round ball, but doesn't roll away. Unfortunatly at a price of 800 to 900 DM this is a quite expensive fun. Certainly ScanQuix 5 were presented. ScanQuix now supports the ICS colour management and offers further new features. The power failture system AmstroNG and Towerhawk 1200/4000 were shown, too. Felix Schwarz von Innovative presented his new graphical editing programm fxPAINT at the booth of RBM. fxPAINT offers everything necessary for todays professional designers: painting tools and surfaces, highly comfortable to operate, many special effects, open concept for enhancements, integrated modules for convertion and administration of pictures, webdesign tools. fxPAINT is furthermore the first application fully using the features of OS 3.5 and of course supports PPC. Felix did an extented presentation for us and we realy were filled with enthusiasm. Amiga-Club im BTX & Internet The Amiga-Club im BTX und Internet takes the task to help Amiga users with all their problems concerning Amiga. It is important that the members help each other, by that contacts become closer and a good community is builded. To do so on the websides of the club a number of forums are available and thats also why the club were at the show. At their booth at the fair users could ask questions about any subject, many small problems could be fixed at the booth. The booth had a lot visitors, and many peoples who knew each other only by the forums had long conversations. Volker Mohr presented an Amiga laptop, which he put together himself laborious. Aaron Digulla presented AROS. AROS is an new implementation of AmigaOS, which is open-source. Linux is used as developer system, cause it is available for free and stable, and allows a quite comfortable development of its own source code. AROS is to imagin as a kind of emulator, emulating the features of AmigaOS similar to UAE in which UAE builds a hardware emulation, whereas AROS actualy emulates the operatingsystem. This project gets ahead only slowly at this time. About 60 % of the work is done, which mainly is due to that of 60 registered developers only a hand full gets active on this regular. Many developers are motivated, but there are problems with time. After all the project progressed far enough that we were able to play a mine-game. We asked Aaron who else he would like to have in the team, and of course he said that Olaf Barthel would be great. :-) APC&TCP Computerclub The APC&TCP Computerclub offers many performances. Some of this are directly deald by the central office, others by several members of the club. And quite that is the power and of course the main meaning of a computerclub. A lot of members like to help other members. This is done at the users' home or by the club magazine NoCover, which one could get on disk, via email or from the homepage of the club. APC&TCP-sale cares for updates and patches for many programms, and supports developer of games. At their booth one could purchase a lot of games. Markus Pöllmann showed a demo of Phoenix, a outerspace game. Epic Marketing Epic-Marketing presented the new game "Dafel Bloodline". That is a Zelda like role game which will support AGA and graphics cards, will use a new sourround sound system and will contain many aktion elements. Lukas Hartmann told us about his realtime strategy game "Soeki - The plague", which he together with Atomatirx (4 ppl) are developing on BeOS and will then be ported to Amiga, if there will be any moving on. The story of the game is very extended. It starts with an over-populated earth and a group of peoples getting teleported to a planet far away. That planet is build out of five islands, of which one is contaminated radioactive. Of course the people have to wear protection suites on that contaminated island what later turns out as a good thing, cause there enrages a virus on each of the islands turning human into monsters. Only the people wearing protection suites don't get affected by that virus. Everybody can imagin how the story continues.... We also met Paul Burkey, the programmer of Foundation (now Foundation - The Directors Cut) at the booth of Epic Marketing. An update for Foundation - The Directors Cut which will fix little bugs will be realeased soon. Titan Computer The highlight at the booth of Titan surely was the presentation of the demo of Heretic II. This game is beeing ported to Amiga by Hyperion Software. The programmers Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden as well as Christian Sauer told us, that a fast PowerPC and for the best a 3D graphics card is recommended for the game, as for Shogo. Ingo Kleefisch presented his morphing programm "Fantastic Dreams", which now even can save single sequences as animations. Also the programmers of the well known CDR-software "BurnIt", Michael Siegel and Axel Deising, were at the booth of Titan. Michael Garlich, the chief of Titan-Computer, told us the decision of Gateway not to develope the MCC anymore put him to worse, cause he believed in those promises and invested a lot of money for licenses. Summary As you surely could read between the lines of the short previews, the show wasn't a "banger". All in all less visitors, only on saturday there were a quite good visitation. This time appearently only those people have come to the show who realy wanted to buy someting or to talk to the developers and to meet other Amiga users. As one could imagin before there were no single sign of the revolutionary development we heard about long time ago. Nevertheless, there are some good starts, but unfortunatly all this is still not "to hand", nothing we would be able to buy here and today. I talked to many users who came with a lot of money to the show, but left it again with the money. This in mind I'm astonished by the vendors beeing quite satisfyed by their turnovers not less than previous jear. This shows definite that there is a existing marked. It would be nice if something "real" would be brought t ging new starts (PPC) would realy come to development, because for me I'm fed up with those keep-up-slogans any way. OS 3.5 is a begining, but now the developers of hardware must come along. This show was a great experience for me. I got to know an incredible number of people personaly who I only knew by email or phone before. I had a lot of intense and extended conversations, which gave me a better understanding of a number of interrelations. I want say thank you very much for the kindness I recieved everywhere. This all was great fun for me and motivated me to go on with Amiga News. One word about those many rumours at the show, as usual at any show. Certainly I've heard some, but I rather stick to facts and will wait until I'm able to report facts. Since so far only a quarter of the placed preorders have been backed up with payments (which results in Microcode Solutions having to write the whole code themselves -> delays in Amiga and PC version), Jim Drew sees four options for the Amiga version: paying back the prepaiments, aborting the project!! (NO!!) continuing the project, finishing by christmas. BUT: Only for those who pre-ordered and pre-payed (hardware dongle) (not so great either) bumping the price to 299 USD (probably by christmas, too) (oops, expensive...) hoping that those who stated interest in FusionPPC will finally place their prepayment so the project can be finished quickly by external reinforcements. Jim Drew is ready to hear other suggestions. Due to the large investments done so far, he is reluctant to drop the project. Read the original message from Jim Drew: "Well, as the clock winds down, we realize that we are not going to meet the deadline for the Amiga PPC release of FUSION. There are numerous reasons, with the most significant reason being that we have received only a small portion of the funds from the 500 that were require to pre-order. We were to use this money for hiring outside sources for writing portions of the code, which we have now been doing ourselves. This whole thing upsets us very much, as if we had known that the pre-payments were never going to arrive, we would have spent the time on the PC version and have it available already (we will always re-coup expenses in the PC market). We are disappointed that less than 1/4 of the people who pledged to pre-pay have not. Because of this, we have only a few choices: Completely abandon the project and refund the money to those individuals who did pre-pay. Continue the project with our normal staff and have the emulation available by Christmas, only to those who pre-paid (no sales to those who did not pre-pay... and use a hardware based dongle to eliminate piracy). Continue the project with our normal staff, and raise the price of the emulation now to $299.95. Please with the public to pay if you pledged to pre-pay and hope that the money comes in so that we can send out some of the work to expidite the process. We don't know what to do. `18.Nov.1999` Jens Schönfeld by e-mail	individual Computers says thank-you Silversurfer number 400 has just left the house, which proves: the Amiga market is alive! Independant magazines in Germany and Great Britain have tested the product to be bug-free and absolutely outstanding. The fact that there's another card on the market which is an exact copy of the Silversurfer from the outside is a compliment for me: there's nothing to improve! Of course, the EOF mode of Miami was supported from the beginning, but since I consider this self-explanatory this feature was not advertised big-time. The next version of Miami will auto-detect the Silversurfer, and use the EOF mode without the user having to activate it manually. There has been much positive feedback on the HEW '99. Only the length of the supplied cable (25cm) was reason for criticism. Since this was known before, starting November '99 the Silversurfer is shipped with an adapter cable which reaches the backside of really every tower. Starting mid December '99, there will also be a slot back allowing to attach the serial port alongside the A1200 mouse port - but there will be seperate news available then. (ps) [News message: 18. Well done, other companies take months, if not years for this. To set this in the right light, Iwin-Corp. of course did not forget to register well-sounding domains like iwin-amiga.de or iwin-mcc.de. At least that's what's described on the web pages. As we already expected from IWin, big words raise hopes that they would soon deliver THE ultimate Amiga system, soon... Once more, dear IWin Corporation: After the last press conference, which could safely be described as disaster, here's our request: Show us your miracle systems, let us participate in your unbelievable developments; as said so many times before, a well done website in combination with good PR does not convince us. `18.Nov.1999` Czech Amiga News	SecOS status report SecOS by Trogladite Software is a software package including diverse functionalities like login, user administration, logfile viewer etc. for networking Amigas. Invalidation Detection detects upon login if the harddrive is validated. If this is not the case, the login is delayed until the harddrive has validated itself. This keeps users from loging into the account of the predecessor. Additionally, user-defined scripts can be executed upon login and logoff. Users can now be organised in groups, and their access rights be set accordingly. Among others, an editor for administrating group and user information is planned. An information programm showing how many users are logged in etc. Work is being done on a logfile viewer controlling three seperate logfiles (server, remote, security), offering search and filter functionality as well as starting macros automatically when specific entries appear in the logfiles.
