AmigaOS 4: Email client Sylpheed 3.0.3r3 for AmiCygnix released
In mid-2020 Edgar Schwan had released the first version 3.0.3 of the email client Sylpheed for AmiCygnix.
Sylpheed is an e-mail program based on the GTK+-GUI-Toolkit. The design and the user-interface is similar to many well-known programs from the Windows world, e.g. Outlook Express (screenshot).
The third candidate of version 3.0.3 provides the following changes:
- The second release of Sylpheed 3.0.3 had problems with SSL connections. The program has now been linked with OpenSSL 1.0.2o and should now work again. An update for a current version of OpenSSL is planned.
- All programs, including the tools of "bogofilter 1.2.5" and "compface 1.5.2", have been linked with the current libraries.
- Spell checker updated.

Amiga emulator: vAmiga.net
In 2019, developer Dirk Hoffmann started to develop vAmiga, a new, user-friendly Amiga emulator for MacOS machines that emulates an A500, A1000 or A2000. This is available in the current version 2.3. Based on this, two WebAssembly implementations were created directly for the browser:
- vAmigaWeb by 'mithrendal' is primarily intended for mobile devices
- vAmiga Online by Christian Corti is supposed to be a 1:1 adaptation of the Mac desktop version
Now Dirk Hoffmann has written his own browser implementation with vAmiga.net with the support of the two developers mentioned above.
As he explains to us, his web port has experimental status and currently only supports a selection of the features that the Mac version of vAmiga offers (for example, no snapshots are supported and there is no virtual keyboard). The idea arose from the motivation to familiarise oneself with web development. He makes further development dependent on feedback from users.

AmigaOS 4: X11 environment AmiCygnix 1.7r2
Edgar Schwan's AmiCygnix is a Unix environment for AmigaOS 4. It is not an emulation, but all programs are compiled natively for AmigaOS 4 (screenshot). AmiCygnix provides a directory and data structure similar to that of a Unix installation.
Version 1.7r2 fixes some bugs of version 1.7 which was released at the beginning of 2023 (amiga-news.de reported):
- The English gui file for the prefs editor "XServer-Access" was broken. Is fixed now.
- The "echo" command of coreutils was buggy. Is fixed now.
- Slightly bugfixed AmiCygnix Unix shell (acxsh, a special version of the abc-shell).
- The integrated root certificates for GnuTLS and OpenSSL have been updated.
- Updated Italian translations. Thanks to Samir Hawamdeh!
- Fixed a minor bug in the Install script.

Amiga emulator: vAmigaWeb - support for real mouse on iPad
vAmigaWeb is an Amiga emulator for the web browser or a Progressive Web App (PWA) based on the Amiga emulator vAmiga for MacOS.
Just a week ago, the developer 'mithrendal' had updated his emulator - we reported yesterday - to now add another feature: support for real mice on the iPad.
As he explains to us, "it is now possible to connect any mouse to an iPad (the MagicKeyboard even has a trackpad built in), but the movement data of web applications is not (yet) retrieved via the so-called PointerLock API". This makes it difficult to control Amiga games or the Workbench with a real hardware mouse. Since he now has an iPad himself, he was able to implement a fallback solution that does not require the PointerLock API standard, but "works amazingly well". (dr)

MorphOS: MIDI-Tools 1.4 for BarsnPipes 1.3
Alfred Faust writes: Antoine 'tcheko' Dubourg has thankfully improved and developed the camdusbmidi.class for MorphOS in a very short time to such an extent that it now also manages MIDI data transmission with the so-called multiport USB MIDI interfaces without any restrictions.
For this I have adapted the MIDI-In and MIDI-Out tools in BarsnPipes. Now it is possible to manage up to 256 (16x16) separate MIDI channels (instruments) in BarsnPipes with a multiport USB MIDI interface. However, these multiport USB MIDI interfaces must be built according to the USB MIDI standard. They are available in good music stores and also online (e.g. Thomann). (snx)

PiStorm32-lite: Assembly instructions of CM4 adapter published
Claude Schwarz' PiStorm connects a Raspberry Pi to the CPU socket of an Amiga via an adapter and uses the British single-board computer to emulate a fast m68k processor. The lite version is supposed to take into account the current difficult situation in the procurement of components and in principle be cheaper (amiga-news.de reported). Basically, the adapter is intended for use with a PI3A, PI3B, PI4B or PiZero2. But for some time now, Emu68 developer Michal Schulz had been working on the development of an additional adapter that would allow the operation of a Compute Module 4 instead of a Raspberry Pi (amiga-news.de reported).
The work on the CM4 adapter and on adapting Emu68 to it is now complete, so Schulz has published the corresponding circuit diagrams and building instructions on GitHub.
The CM4 is basically a Raspberry Pi4 on an even smaller board without peripherals, which is intended more for industrial applications. Since the CM4 does not have the usual 40-pin header, it cannot be operated alone with the PiStorm. Schulz's CM4 adapter board is needed for this.
Basically, the developer tells us, there are already many adapter boards for CM4 on the market, but they have a problem: they would fit together with the PiStorm32-lite, but would not have the right size to ultimately fit everything in the Amiga's expansion slot. There is a risk of overheating and short circuits.
The adapter board he designed was specially intended for the PiStorm32Lite and fit together like a glove. Furthermore, there is enough space for a heat sink and fan. In addition, his adapter board has a ribbon cable connection to which an IO card developed by Claude Schwarz (also to be released soon) can be connected, with which the relevant connections such as HDMI, Ethernet or USB can be routed out of the back of the A1200. This will reduce cable clutter. Finally, the CM4 adapter offers an NVMe slot. There is no driver for it yet, but in the future it will be possible to connect an NVMe hard drive. (dr)

Text adventure: Memory Lane
The developer 'ComSha' has released a classic text adventure called "Memory Lane" in which you can explore a city and discover mysterious places. You have to collect various objects and interact with other citizens. The catch: they don't seem to be able to remember you.
Depending on the player's actions, six different endings to the game are possible. The developer created his text adventure during an internship, which he updated again on a larger scale a year later. (dr)

Adventure: Geo's Quest "In Search of Queen Lorraine"
Paul Golian started writing his graphic adventure Geo's Quest "In Search of Queen Lorraine" in 2000, interrupted work on it in 2002 and was only able to continue it last year in retirement. The game is created in hand-drawn Low Res-32 colours and is intended to be a 9-chapter parody of the Commodore story, of which this game forms the first three.
It contains over 100 hand-drawn rooms and close-ups (numerous examples under the title link), dozens of animations, samples & mods (some by the author, some from the Amos PD Library). Included in the zip archive is a game manual that provides important information about the game and memory management. Required is an Amiga with 2 MB chip RAM, recommended is an Amiga with 68020 or faster processor. (dr)

More than a year ago, 'Prototron' had published a first preview video of his improved implementation of Capcom's Final Fight written in machine language (amiga-news.de reported). Now that he has almost completely rewritten the game code, he published a new video a few days ago, which presents the 2-player mode as well as new music.
Unlike the first video, this version runs on an Amiga with a 68000 processor, ECS and 2MB chip RAM. As the author writes, there would also have been a version for Amigas with 1MB and OCS, but unlike the Megadrive and SNES, the Amiga would not have the hardware capability to flip a sprite horizontally. The extra memory would serve to store flipped sprites, resulting in smoother gameplay as it takes any unnecessary graphical load off the CPU. There would still be a lot to optimise - with four enemies on the screen it gets a bit sluggish - but progress would be made. (dr)

RTG driver: P96 V3.3.3 released
Jens Schönfeld (individual Computers) has released version 3.3.3 of his RTG driver P96, which can be bought or downloaded from the order history at iComp. As developer Thomas Richter writes, the major feature of this release is that it offers the emulation of planar bitplanes, even if the graphics card does not support them or if a program requests more than the maximum 4 bitplanes VGA offers. That should help to promote even more legacy applications to the graphics card. To do this, "ENV:Picasso96/EmulatePlanar" must be set to "Yes" and restarted. A detailed description of the changes can be found in the English section of the iComp support forum. (dr)

MorphOS: Real-time strategy game Vanilla Conquer V1.0 (TinyGL-Version)
After Bruno "BeWorld" Peloille's SDL implementation of the first part of the real-time strategy series Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, which has the open-source name "Vanilla Conquer" and is based on Artur Jarosik's release for AmigaOS 3 (amiga-news.de reported), Mark 'bigfoot' Olsen has now ported the second part, the prequel Command & Conquer: Red Alert to MorphOS.
Upon our request, the developer kindly explains to us that "the biggest part of this port is fixing the many, many big endian issues in the original project. Artur Jarosik opted to release his port using SDL and OpenAL. My port of Vanilla Conquer to MorphOS does not use SDL or OpenAL, but instead adds native support for MorphOS via TinyGL, CGX and AHI. It also contains an installer that lets you install game data either from original media, if you happen to own that, or via internet download.
The original game ran at a resolution of 640x400 on a 4:3 display and thus did not have square pixels. The TinyGL renderer will open a screen that matches your Ambient screen in resolution and use the GPU to stretch the image to fullscreen, while preserving the aspect ratio of the original game, giving you an experience that is as close to the original as possible. The fallback renderer has no stretching capability, so to play in fullscreen with a proper aspect ratio, you need to create a 640x400 8bpp display mode in MorphOS, and either use a 4:3 monitor or configure your monitor to stretch the image to 4:3, if it has that option.
The MorphOS port has a few additions that the original version of Vanilla Conquer does not have. When you're in a game, in the options menu, under visual settings, you can change the game to run in windowed mode, and if using the TinyGL renderer, you can switch between using a 15bpp screen or a 24bpp screen/texture. The 15bpp mode might sacrifice some palette resolution in some cases, but runs a lot faster than the 24bpp mode." (dr)

AmigaOS 4: Public beta version 1.55 of "Doom 3" port
At the beginning of July last year (amiga-news.de reported) Hugues 'HunoPPC' Nouvel released a first, non-public beta version of Dhewm3 for AmigaOS 4.1 - a Doom port based on the Doom 3 GPL source code. He has further optimised this so that the game can now be played at 30 frames per second on an AmigaOne X5000 with a resolution of 1920x1080 (YouTube video) and is now available for testing by the general public.

AmigaOS 4: C runtime library clib2 v1.0.0 beta 9
Andrea 'afxgroup' Palmate has created a fork of the official clib2 library, included in adtools. This library is exclusively for AmigaOS 4 to make it easy to maintain and to be able to add all the missing clib2 functions that are hard to add on 68k Amigas. The goal is to make it POSIX compliant and also fix any C++ problems that exist with newer compilers (amiga-news.de reported).
Yesterday he has released the ninth beta version with the following changes:
- Added aio* POSIX functions with some minor limitations
- Fixed shared objects libraries (They needs a new elf.library)
- Added sigsetjmp/siglongjmp
- pthread moved into libc. libpthread however exists for compatibility reasons
- Some minor fixes
- Added more test programs

Point'n Click adventure: Ring around the World
"Ring around the World" (video) by Simone Bevilacqua (KOG, Huenison, Blastaway, among others) is described by the author as a "short, open world, point'n'click adventure from the top view". The player wakes up on the shore of an unknown world and can only remember two things - one of the two memories is his drowning in a stormy sea.
"Ring around the World" requires a PAL Amiga with one megabyte of chip RAM and Kickstart 1.3, a hard disk is recommended. The game is free, the author asks players who like the title to "offer some support to somebody who is a victim of any kind of violence". (cg)

Installer replacement: InstallerLG 1.0.2 for AROS, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS
Ola 'sodero' Söder's InstallerLG is a reimplementation of the "Installer"! utility included with AmigaOS as of version 2.1. InstallerLG aims to be fully compatible with the original as described in the V44.10 documentation. Most resource limitations found in the Commodore implementation are gone, and the GUI has been replaced by a MUI / Zune based one.
In contrast to the original AmigaOS implementation, the "effect" statement is treated by InstallerLG like any other statement. This means that it is possible to change effect during the installation. The "database" function supports a new attribute, 'os', which enables
scripts to recognise the operating system without the guesswork of many multi-platform installers.
As the author goes on to write, InstallerLG is compatible with the latest installer for AmigaOS 3 and it has functions that are not available in the AmigaOS 4 installer, for example "effect", "reboot", "back", "trace", "retrace" and many more. (dr)

Hyperion Entertainment released AmigaOS 3.2.2
Press release Hyperion Entertainment CVBA is proud to provide the second free update of AmigaOS 3.2.
This new update demonstrates the developers' continued dedication to ensure that AmigaOS 3.2 is the most capable and most stable operating system ever for 68K based Amigas.
If you do not already own a copy of AmigaOS 3.2, there is now even more reason to get one from your favourite dealer!
The team of developers and testers have worked tirelessly ever since the release of AmigaOS 3.2.1 on fixing bugs and implementing a number of new features.
The highlights of the new features and fixes of AmigaOS 3.2.2 are as follows:
- TextEdit has seen several improvements to its extension interface, and has gained an "About" menu item;
- "Showconfig" now shows 68060 revision;
- "IconEdit" now notifies the user if someone else modifies the icon file that is being edited. And pressing the help key brings up help. The whole color handling of colorful icons has been improved so icons can no longer degrade. Users may end up in a situation wherein it will look worse than on a perfect display, but it will not degrade the icon. As such the dreaded "downgrade" dialog doesn't happen anymore, but in some cases "IconEdit" will open on a separate screen
- "Kickstart" can now boot with earlier Workbench and icon library versions if they are present on the boot volume. This allows for installation of the ROM whilst retaining the ability to boot any AmigaOS version from 3.1 to 3.9, before installation of AmigaOS 3.2 on a volume
- The sketchboard.gadget has seen some speed improvements, that should be noticeable when using IconEdit
- The listbrowser.gadget has had a complete overhaul, making the file much smaller, and a bit faster
- The layout.gadget has had a complete overhaul
- The window.class has had a complete overhaul
- The RAM disk has had a complete overhaul so it is much less likely to cause issues.
- Improved "Locale" support
- Updated version of boards.library
Update 2 for AmigaOS 3.2 is available for download.
Hyperion wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the AmigaOS 3.x development team as well as the beta-testers for their ceaseless efforts.
If YOU want to support our efforts further, please head over to our AmigaOS merchandise store. (dr)

Web browser: AmiFox 0.2 released
AmiFox is a kind of web browser for original Amigas. Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow has been reporting about its development since mid-February and after a short beta test phase version 0.2 is now generally available.
The principle of this browser is to outsource the actual rendering via WRP (Web Rendering Proxy), so that the finished rendering is sent back to the Amiga just as an image. In return, however, it is possible to display modern web pages containing CSS and Javascript. Interactions with the web page are then reported back to the server.
The underlying WRP was adapted to provide more functions and security/privacy. (snx)

Video player: Amos Video Player
The group "ELECTRIC BLACK SHEEP", known among other things for the fantasy shooter Project Quest, which is currently in development, or the mini-game None of Us, updated their "AMOS Video Player", which has been in development since 2020, a few days ago and fixed some bugs
According to the developers, it is "a very simple video player that runs on any Amiga." The playback and encoding target is fixed at 320x256 25 fps, but changeable in the source code (2 colours up to HAM6 is possible, but then much slower). The loading time is not parallel to the playback time due to the non-optimised code, so the result is terrible on real hardware, but looks pretty good under WinUAE. Everybody is invited to play with the source code. (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.9
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)
The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Today version 1.9 of the Greaseweazle Tools was released providing the following changes:
- HFE: Support reading and writing HFEv3 image files
- For example: gw convert Game.ipf Game.hfe::version=3
- Useful for running converted IPFs on FlashFloppy Goteks
- MSA: Read & write Atari ST MSA image files
- D88: Remove hard-coded track double-stepping
- TSC Flex: Add diskdef disk definitions
- Various bug fixes

Jump'n Run: Demo version V1.5 of "Creeping Me Out Hex Night"
Michael 'Mixel' Dawes provides another demo version of his jump'n run 'Creeping Me Out: Hex Night', created with the game construction kit Scorpion Engine. This new preview is functionally the same as version 1.4 apart from a few bug fixes, but there is now a separate AGA version with some optimisations and new backgrounds and effects.
As Dawes shows with examples, the ECS version sometimes has more colours on the screen than the AGA version, which in turn makes up for this with the greater depth in the background with the full-screen parallax.

User report: The PiStorm32-lite, part 2
The first part of my report ended with the "BUPtest" giving an error message after switching on the Amiga 1200. When I plugged in the HDMI cable, I noticed that the large plug of the HDMI cable bent the card upwards by quite a bit. So I suspected that this might have caused contact problems.
After some research, I decided on an UltraThin HDMI cable:
This made it easy to connect the cable without much "bending":
However, the result of my efforts was sobering: after switching on, I was still greeted by the already familiar error message :( So, I kept asking around. What else could be the problem? Basically the contacts? Although they have been well protected by the Blizzard 1230 so far. Anyway, I disconnected and reconnected the PiStorm32 a few times. Try again! Error message persists!
Some users had reported that it only worked for them if the adapter card was not inserted all the way into the Trapdoor connection, but was pulled back two or three millimetres. I tried that too, but again no success. It didn't help, I had to bother Claude and Michal again. Claude offered to provide me with a test image that could be used to further isolate the problem. I accepted with thanks.
I installed it, started it and what do you think? It worked!!!! There is no such thing. So it was clear: my hardware is OK!
But what was the reason then?
On his test image, Claude used the latest stable version of Emu68, while I used the nightly build that was current at the time of the test. Claude says that for normal users he would always recommend the stable version, as nightly builds do not always run stably and may also require modified firmware. And while we were pondering the reasons, he sent me a picture that lists the versions of Emu68:
Well, three guesses which version I used for testing... the one from 24 January. OK, I was unlucky, but at least I didn't do anything fundamentally wrong. And it finally worked! :)
The next step was now to set up the P96 driver, but here I would like to refer to the Setting up P96 tutorial already linked in the first part. Just a few notes on this: tutorial already linked in the first part. Just a few notes on this:
If one has only one monitor, as I do, the test button in the prefs programme "Picasso96Mode" is useless. Through the unselfish help of the user 'katzazakis', after numerous unsuccessful tests of the screen resolution, I remembered (again) that I have to change the input on the monitor from VGA to HDMI in order to be able to see the test picture. It is impossible to do this during the short display time of the test picture. Here, it is better to use the "Edit" mode, which cannot be terminated automatically but only by active action and additionally offers the options to change resolution and screen size by means of arrow keys or additional CTRL and Shift keys:
By the way, you should not be confused by the displayed refresh rates, which obviously do not represent real values. For my Philips Brilliance 241B in 16:9 format, a frequency of 60 Hz is recommended, but this is never displayed or reached in the settings programmes. I finally decided on a resolution of 960 x 540 as standard and created three colour profiles for it. Additionally, for surfing with IBrowse and the mail client YAM, the resolution 1366 x 768. The test images worked. Now reboot and finally try a new screen resolution. It worked, here they are:
I use the "HiColour" version for a start. A comparison of old and new:
In the pictures, the difference doesn't seem that big. But in real life I can only say:
Wow! Great! The efforts were worth it. After almost 30 years, I can display the Workbench in high resolution with my Amiga 1200! It's amazing! What you can't see, however, is that the RTG resolution has once again increased the speed at which windows and folders open. I must admit, it feels like a modern PC. And by the way, as you can notice in the Chip RAM display above, there are now even 2 MB available.
However, one must bear in mind that not all programmes and tools support this high-resolution display. Like Sysinfo, for example, for which I have to switch back to VGA mode on the screen - after another brief pause: has it crashed? ;) - I have to switch back to VGA mode on the screen:
To be honest, I can do rather less with such information, I need practical values. Here are a few figures for solving the respective task:
Task Blizzard 1230 PiStorm32-lite
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unarchiving the 3:06 Min 30 Sec
latest YAM
Nightly Build
Starting YAM 2:41 Min 18 Sec (with icons)
Unarchivin 1:21 Min 9 Sec
AmiSSL 5.7
Visiting 24 Sec 3 Sec
Amiga-News.de
using IBrowse 2.5.8
(https)
By the way, the boot time has not changed (noticeably).
Is there anything that bothers you? Yes, currently you no longer have a real-time clock in the Amiga 1200 that stores the time (which was previously provided by the Blizzard 1230). For me, the time is reset to 2016 after every boot. According to PiStorm developer Claude Schwarz, an RTC driver for the Pi is coming though (which will also require an addition to the hardware). Otherwise, further tests will show how the various programmes, tools and demos run.
Conclusion: I am thrilled! If you put the effort and the costs in relation to the benefits, I have to say quite clearly: absolute recommendation. Definitely, if you work a lot with the Workbench and programmes from the hard disk, as I do. Working at this speed and with this screen resolution is a real pleasure! (dr)

AmigaOne X5000: Why AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS tick differently
What is one of the advantages of an AmigaOne X5000? You can use AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS in parallel on it (and Linux). But what drives you crazy on a regular basis? The obviously out-of-sync clocks!
Naturally, at first one doubts one's own inability to use the two OS correctly. But if you ask around, even experienced developers feel the same way: If you set the clock correctly under AmigaOS 4 at the moment, at winter/standard time, it will show one hour later when you boot MorphOS afterwards. Conversely, after setting the correct time under MorphOS, the hour hand goes forward one hour. How?
The solution to the riddle was not only profoundly but also very helpfully led by the MorphOS developer Frank Mariak and the AmigaOS developer Olaf Barthel: As Mariak explains, "MorphOS sets the time in the RTC hardware clock to Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) - just like Linux and also MacOS. Everything that is then set in the operating system in terms of times is the local time, which is derived from UTC".
AmigaOS works differently, which is due to its history, to which Olaf Barthels explains: "In 1985/1986 one could not yet look far enough into the future. The operating system interfaces for reading and setting the current system time were not designed to take time zones into account back then.
So when you call up what time it is and what date is current, you always get back the "local time". When setting, it is the same (the local time is expected).
With AmigaOS4, it is assumed that the time information for files, etc. always represents the local time. The local time is then automatically changed if necessary. This time change issue has even been present in AmigaOS for a very long time (late 1980's/early 1990's)."
And Frank Mariak adds: "The problem also existed for a long time with MorphOS because of the legacy compatibility to AmigaOS, until with MorphOS 3.10 a usable, compatible way was found to store the time in UTC in the hardware, but still realise the possibility of the automatic summer/winter time change under MorphOS".
Conclusion: either you continue to set the clock manually in the future, or you use a possibility to automate this via Network Time Protocol (NTP) server. A simple but elegant option for this is the commodity Mr. Wolf: placed in the appropriate folder under Utilities and permanently integrated via WBStartup, the time is adjusted automatically when an internet connection is available. However, two things need to be taken into account:
Obviously, the network connection on the X5000 is activated a little later than the WBStartup programmes are started. Therefore, it is important to set a "DELAY", i.e. a delay of a few seconds. By the way, during testing it turned out that after the elapsed ten seconds the time was still not adjusted. When asked about this, the developer Chris Young checked this and found that in the previous version 2.1 - regardless of the delay set - at least 15 minutes had to elapse. However, this has been fixed in version 2.2, which he has just released, and the delay entered does indeed take effect in this way.
Secondly, it is important that the time is not stored in the hardware. Otherwise you will have the problem of the shifted time again. Therefore, only set "SAVE=SYSTEM". (dr)
