Exploring MP-Like Solutions
Fleecy Moss (Vice President - Development - Amiga Inc.) talks on the AMIOPEN mailing list about the subject Memory Protection (MP) in the new Amiga. This discussion rose from the amiga-news.de interview with Francis Charig from TAO. Hereupon followed several discussions in the MooBunny forum:

1. Thread Looks (to me) like AmigaDE will never have mp
2. Thread Tao's response to MP in AmigaDE
3. Thread Bill M's response to Tao's response to MP in DE

Also at ANN this subject has been discussed industrious in a long Thread.

There were many comments at amiga.org, too.

Planet IT: Interview with Bill McEwen
Dave Johnson from Planet IT did an interview with Bill McEwen, President and CEO at Amiga Inc. on January 8th, 2001.

Here a small extract from the six-pages interview:

Q: It sounds like you have plans to do a lot of things. Where are you concentrating your effort?

A: In the home. Homes need set-tops, desktop computers, handhelds and cell phones. Motorola even has a cell phone running the Amiga OS, by the way. The home is our target, and I think you'll see us first in set-top boxes. We also have some reference designs for some amazing desktops that we think will blow people away. We won't build hardware ourselves, but we have reference designs for others to build.

Q: So there could be new Amiga hardware coming out. Will there also be shrink-wrapped Amiga OS packages to run on Windows?

A: Yes, there will be, but I'm not sure what the timing will be. We're still finishing up some of the last components, like the 3D renderers. That will all be finished up in the next new months. Already, we can run very cool 3D animation on a Cassiopeia, and it is very smooth.

The entire interview is to find under the title link.

MeterNet® Press Release
At the bottom of the following press release MeterNet announced the SimpleBox 8600 series (powered by AmigaDE) to be released late February 2001.

MeterNet® Selects EnReach Technology's Easy Internet Access Platform for SimpleBox wb7500 Series

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 17,2001 PRNewswire -- EnReach Technology, Inc., a global leader providing infrastructure software for enabling enhanced services on television, announced today that MeterNet Corporation has selected the EnReachTV2(TM) Internet access platform to power the new wb7500 series in its expanding SimpleBox entry-level Internet appliance lineup.

The new SimpleBox wb7500 series will utilize a specially tailored version of EnReachTV2 that integrates Webmail, TV Lists, and MeterNet's SimpleBox User Interface. Each SimpleBox wb7500 will ship preconfigured with US Nationwide access dial-up service for $19.95 per month. Multi-lingual English and Spanish technical support will also be provided. "EnReach's interactive software solution and our new SimpleBox wb7500 series is an easy to use, low-cost combination that targets 'Late Adopters' seeking a simple preconfigured alternative to discover the Internet on their home televisions," said Greg Wible, President of MeterNet.

The EnReachTV2 Internet access software offers companies like MeterNet the opportunity to supply their customers with a low cost Internet access solution optimized for television. Advanced smart-fit screen technology and an embedded browser make this a strong contender in the device marketplace.

"We are pleased to be working with a solution provider like MeterNet, who was identified as one of the six major stand-alone Internet on TV providers by The Carmel Group," said Bo Wu, CEO for EnReach."

MeterNet's SimpleBox Program is dedicated to bringing best of breed solutions to their embedded platforms that target vertical and export markets. Each device incorporates a tailored SimpleBox User Interface (UI) on top of rugged solid-state design hardware with no moving parts. Along with providing simple navigation and operation, the SimpleBox UI offers optional integrated Web-based eMail and TV Listings that are optimized for display on televisions. The new wb7500 series complements the wb6400 series that have been shipping worldwide for the last 18 months and the new broadband wb8600 series that will be released in February.

Heise: Linux Worm Obviously Spreading Rapidly
«An Internet worm named Ramen is attacking servers running under the Linux distribution by Red Hat and apparently is spreading quite quickly. It's activities stood out by augmented scans on Remote Procedure Call Services (RPC). The worm utilizes two security gaps known long before inside of FTP-Server wuftpd and the program rpc.statd, which obviously still not have been remove from many Linux machines. Already in September 2000 the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) gave warning of augmented attacks of this kind.»

Heise: DivX Successor "OpenDivX" goes Open Source
«The MPEG4 video codec successor "DivX", which derived some stardom from being in operation for spreading piracy copied movies via the Internet, may hope to be widely supported. To gain more programmers to participate in the so called "Project Mayo" the developers around Joe Bezdek, "Director of Product Definition" of Project Mayo decided to release the current en-/decoder core of the video format as Open Source. OpenDivX is only one step on the way to realize greater goals: a versatile video codec - named "DivX Deux" by the programmers - offering high quality and being free available at the same time »

Vulcan Software Alive
After a long period of abstinence there are some news from Vulcan Software. We remember: An English producer and developer of moderate Amiga games.

The "Valhalla" series, which was not very successful for the Amiga already, will be continued for the PC. For the Amiga this game could at least convince by its few spoken sentences, but the first screenshots of PC-Valhalla makes suspecting a product PC users might gladly leave un-converted. (ps)

Heise: Linux 2.4 with File-System ReiserFS
«The Linux-kernel v2.4.0 has just been finished at last, and development already goes on. The biggest change which will be integrated in the next kernel-version 2.4.1 would be including of the Journaling File System ReiserFS. Already at the beginning of October Linus Torvalds explained in an interview with c`t that he will not include ReiserFS in kernel 2.4.0, but as soon as possible in the 2.4. line. Obviously the time is right: kernel 2.4.1-pre7 contains ReiserFS.»

Amiga Future News

'The Commodore Billboard' Needs Help
Amiga Future wrote:
'The Commodore Billboard' has a really big problem. The site has 17 new TV-advertising spots and several other stuff, but has not any possibility to offer that amount to the users on their own server. Because of that Soren is urgently searching for users to put some files on their servers. If you have this possibility, please contact Soren via eMail.

Following the complete message:
«The 17 tv-ads require some 70 MB. This will generate more traffic than I'm allowed to use on my server. I'm currently in contact with a guy who might be able to host all the files for free. This is obviously the ultimate solution, but if this fails, I would like to know if some of you die-hard Commodore fans out there would be willing to help me?

Instead of one server hosting all the video clips, I was wondering if we could spread the files over several servers. If 17 people would volunteer and host 1 file each? You would have to provide between 2.2 and 5.5 MB storage space each. Would anyone be interested? I order to make this work, I guess it'll have to be all or nothing. If only 5 people volunteer, I think I'll scratch this hosting idea. As you may have traffic limits on your accounts I can inform you that The Commodore Billboard has between 30-40 visitors aday. This will of course be higher for a short while, when the news about the 17 tv-ads reaches the Commodore news sites. But then again, not all 40 will download 5 MB video clips. And with the audio previews available, maybe people will be more selective and not just download the whole lot. This might help decrease traffic. By the way, you have to provide webspace on fairly decent servers. I wouldn't want people to download the video clips with a speed of 0.2 KB/sec. ;-))»

Any help in solving the hosting problem is much appreciated. eMail»

AmigaOS Change-Logs Release Campaign
Matt Sealey started a petition to find out how big the common interest in the publishing of change-logs since AmigaOS 3.1 really is.

The change-logs contain changes and add-ons compared to the previous versions of the AmigaOS. This could be helpful for the development of new software.

The logs for AmigaOS V2.0 up to V3.1 are available on every Developer CD. According to Matt Sealey Haage & Partner declined publishing their changes on the Developer CD V2.1.

There is the possibility on http://www.starforge.co.uk/petition.html to sign a petition.

AAA Award Canceled For The Time Being
Since 1997 the AAA Awards were given to people out of the Amiga area, among other things for their hard- and software products. Among the award winners have been Holger Kruse, Dave Haynie, Marcel Beck, Kermit Woodall, Stefan Burstroem and SoftLogik. Now the awarding of this price will be canceled for the time being. The reasons for this are too little manpower and too low support. In the future the award may be granted again. This depends among other things on the community and Amiga. Everybody who wants to comment on this may write to f98-msa@f.kth.se.

The actual AAA Award Homepage at www.aaa-awards.org will be offline in the near future. The new one can be reached via www.amiga-cg.se/aaaa/.

Second SimpleMail Alpha Released
On January 14th, 2001 Hynek Schlawack and Sebastian Bauer have released the second alpha version of the email client 'SimpleMail'. Compared to the previous version the following has changed:
  • New: image buttons.
  • New: showing of HTML mails (using internal routines lent from SimpleHTML).
  • New: mails with different mode possible.
  • New: showing of mail threads.
  • New: index files for folder.
  • Change: better address book.

SimpleMail can be found under http://www.schlawack.net/simplemail/. There are also screenshots of the software on this site.

The authors hope for this second version receiving a little bit more feedback as they got for the first one and point out that the alpha state refers to functionality, but by no means to stability.

Amiga Flame News

Ultra Violent Worlds released
Some time ago Crystal Interactive has announced to offer Amiga games on dual format CD-ROMs, that would contain a version for another computer system along with the version for the Amiga. Now, with Ultra Violent Worlds the first game of this kind has been released for the Amiga and IBM PC compatibles.

Ultra Violent Worlds is a 2D-Shooter with vertical parallax scrolling on three levels, background animations in arcade quality, impressive explosions and atmospheric sound FX inclusive a matching soundtrack. Next to the 1 player mode there's the possibility to play with two people on one split screen at the same time.

The game was developed by the Australian company Vorlan Software. The Amiga version was already released in 1998 and contained several bugs at that time. These were fixed in this re-release.

The Amiga version runs on any Amiga with AGA, 2MB Chip-RAM and 2MB Fast-RAM. The PC version runs on Windows 95/98 with 8MB of free RAM.

CDTVTools v1.0 Published
CDTVTools v1.0 has been released on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. This package is a collection of programs using the CDTV base library to give also normal Amiga users the CTDTV feeling. All of the included programs are commodities which can be controlled via Exchange. So now everybody can e.g. start the original CDTV screen blanker, CD player or preferences program.

The tools are basing on the CDTV basie library "playerprefs" by Commodore which is implemented in the CDTV's ROM. Since I discovered documentations on this library on the Developer CD v1.2, I was able to develop these tools within two days. Of course these tools are freeware.

The Quantum Leap: StormC 4
The latest version of the successful development system actually represents a quantum leap: network capability, shared make, CVS, modified GCC compiler for the Amiga hunk format, global full-text search, extended editor, debugging of tasks and shared libraries, and the new StormDOC.

But the most important feature of this new development system is the step it takes towards the new AmigaOS. Though still everything runs on the Classic Amiga and will be published like that, but everything was developed with easy portability in mind. Last but not least this was the reason for a modified version of the GCC used as compiler.

Scalos 1.2d Beta Released
A new beta version of Scalos, the extensive Workbench replacement, has been released. The website hasn't been updated, yet. Please read the readme's before installation!

Download:
Scalos-V1.2d.lha
Scalos-IconSystem.lha

Here the original mail:
All OS3.4+ owners will be pleased to know that a new Scalos exe has been released! The fixes are a combined effort with the original source from Juergen and the dedicated effort of Dave for sloggin' it out through late nights! Until the website is updated later today you can grab the new executable only archive from:
http://scalos.striatum.org/products/scalos/main/Scalos-V1.2d.lha

To install, simply copy the executable in the archive to SCALOS: path. Please continue to read this email before installing anything new! You will also need the latest (release 3) of the seperate icon system archive
http://scalos.striatum.org/products/scalos/main/Scalos-IconSystem.lha

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE FILES ARE STILL CONSIDERED BETA STATUS UNTIL IT *APPEARS* EVERYBODY IS HAVING NO PROBLEMS. We appreciate error reports to the mailing list, share your problems regarding OS3.5+ icon images with us so we can ensure all problems are fixed.

NOTE:
We are aware that the logo in the about requester does not remap to the correct colours currently, this is a side effect of the new 'C' ported code for portions of Scalos. This will not affect use and we hope to have that fixed before the next release. Which should hopefully feature some decent bug fixes.

Ensure you backup your OLD 'Scalos' executable file before replacing it with this new one, just incase. Once everything is finalised all beta files will become release versions and appear in the main Scalos distribution archive. Hey, we might even upload it to Aminet too :-) Have fun, and lets hope all is well.

PC Manufacturer Gateway Cancels Every 10th Job
Onlinekosten.de wrote:
«The US computer manufacturer Gateway after unexpected deficit cancels more than every tenth job. As the company announced on Thursday (local time) in San Diego, California, job slashing would go off already during the first quarter this year, Gateway employed 19,300 people worldwide in 1998. The offeror specialized in direct shipping of PCs announced a deficit of 94,3 millions of US dollar for 4Q/2000, because of diclined demand and risen pricing pressure. »

«More than 10 % of staffers of the oppressed PC manufacturer Gateway will loose their jobs: this is a consequence which Gateway drew from extremely base balance for the 4th quarter. Balance was even worse than expected after the profit caution from late November when Gateway stated to be in the red in the 4th quarter.»
