Astronomy: Modifications in Digital Almanac III
Achim Stegemann writes:
In order to keep the program slim, I decided to cut off some very old stuff. In this
case the support of the graphics format IFF-RGFX will be stopped. IFF-RGFX is an
alternative graphic format to IFF-ILBM, which was originaly developed by Andreas
Kleinert and carried by me.
While IFF-ILBM only archieves a weak image compression, IFF-RGFX offers by the use
of the XPK modular compression rates for the encoding. Unfortunately this format was
never assumed by the Amigans. I do not know any other program, which supports RGFX
except SuperView and Digital Almanac. Therefore I threw it now of the program. RGFX
was replaced by the portable PNG format, which is supported already for some time in
DA III.
Moreover I am developing a new concept for the program documentation. Instead of
using connected HTML files as before, which can be read then in an external Browser.
From now on a program assistance will appear within DA III. Each window therefore
possesses its own description, which in an extra assistance window is displayed.
Thus storage space is saved and an update of the documentation is likewise simpler
than so far. The release of the new DA III version 4.9 are to be expected in December
2002!

Antivirus software: xvs.library Version 33.39
Georg Hoermann has just released a new update of the xvs.library.
Remember this library is very important for all the major antivirus
programs, because they all use this library to get recog. for viruses.
Here is some info about the new update:
Name: External Virus Scanner Library
Version: v33.39
Archive name: xvslibrary.lha
Archive size: 91.362 bytes (lha packed)
Release date: 11 November 2002
Programmer: Georg Hörmann - ghoermann@gmx.de
News: xvs.library 33.39 (size: 61.196 bytes)
- Added size check to bootblock virus recognition in xvsCheckFile().
Any files bigger than 2048 bytes will no longer be tested for
bootblock viruses to avoid fake recognitions inside disk-images.
- Finally fixed the last MuForce hit ($c0.w) in xvsSurveyMemory().
Thanks to Sensei again for the report and Zeeball for further
suggestions on this topic.
- Fixed severe bug in 'Illegal Access' recognition code that caused
crashes on any files with virus-like hunklengths. Thanks to
Zeeball for the report and the example files.
- Added 'NoName (196 Bytes)' linkvirus and 'XFD Infiltrator' virus.
Thanks to Zeeball for sending them.
- Fixed problems with native MorphOS applications that directly call
xvs.library functions. Thanks to Harry Sintonen for the report and
for further help.
- Implemented custom Disable() function that prevents loss of data
on the serial port during xvsSurveyMemory() calls. Thanks to
Christian of CAPS (www.caps-project.org) for the report and the
excessive beta-testing!
- xvsSurveyMemory() now closes TCP ports opened by several viruses.
These currently are: 1666, 2000, 2001, 2227, 2333, 2421, 2551,
4097 and 9876. Please note that closing an open port doesn't cause
a virus report, it just happens!
- Once again improved the internal security stuff for less timing
problems with sensitive software (serial.device still has trouble
with 115200 baud on a MC68030, use 8n1.device instead!).
- Added 'Neurotic Death' viruses (6 versions) to xvsSurveyMemory()
and the installer files to xvsCheckFile().
- Added new developer files created by Dirk Stöcker. Thanks a lot
and sorry that I forgot to add them to the last release.
- Added installer script written by Dave 'Targhan' Crawford. Thanks
a lot for this contribution.

Virus Help Denmark online again
Jan Andersen writes:
Hi all.....
It has been some time now, I have been moving and I have had
no Internet connection. But just to inform you all that I'm alive and

I got an email from Charlene, that she had a hard disk crach. So I
have desided to make an emergency Virus Help page, where users
can get the latest antivirus programs. I'll do the uploading from my
work computer (my boss does not mind) :-)
Okay, so the Virus Help Denmark page in up and running at a small
size, but all the latest Antivirus programs are on it. And only Amiga
stuff is for download.
The complete Virus Help Denmark website will be up on the 1'th of
December 2002. Then I get my ADSL connection back.
I know that this has been as much a problem for you, as it has been

MIDI: BarsnPipes V1.17
Already on 7th November 2002, Alfred Faust has released version 1.17 of the
MIDI software 'BarsnPipes'.
Compared to the previous version, the following changes have been made:
- Double ScreenWidth and Double ScreenHeight now are exactly the double
of the Text-Overscan of the current choosen screenmode, equal, which
dimensions you have had defined in the screenmode-requester before.
NB.:Text-Overscan is the size of the screen, which fits exactly the
visible range on the monitor.
ATTENTION !
These values are not stored anywhere. If you want to go back to these
values, you must:
- uncheck the Double Width and Double Height gadgets
- "Choose" - screenmode and insert your values into the Width and
Height integer-gadgets in the screenmode-requester and resume
- after that you may click "Save" or "Use", like you want
- Changed the method of altering a value with the mouse in the
List-Editor in "Magic-Wand"-mode
- Changed the colorization in the song-construction-window.
Now the marked and shifted range is more "colored".
(Not in the "classic" version)
- MIDI-Defaults now defineable for each MIDI-channel separate, and
they may be saved and loaded in separate files

Audio: OctaMED SoundStudio 2 for Amiga discontinued
RBF Software have announced that development of the sample sequencer 'OctaMED
SoundStudio 2' for Amiga has been discontinued. According to RBF, the only
chance for further development would be if the makers of the new Amiga were
ready to talk with RBF Software about a possible new version.
"If you still want to see OctaMED arise again on the new Amiga,
the only way forward is if the manufacturers of the new Amiga
are willing to hold talks regarding a possible new version."
(RBF Software)
It is not possible to release the Amiga source code as Freeware as some vital
parts of the source code have to remain copyrighted.
OctaMED SoundStudio V1.03c itself is available for

Audio: APC&TCP has acquired rights to DigiBooster Professional
Lately APC&TCP have concluded a contract with the programmers of
DigiBoosterPro and thus acquired all rights to the program, source and the name
DigiBoosterPro.
DigiBooster Professional is a sample based music tracker program. With
- more than 60 commands
- a choice of 128 tracks
- 255 available sample locations
- DSP echo
- and much more
there are no boundaries for inspiration. So, those who have already worked with
programs such as Protracker will be able to shortly find their way around DBPro.
As DBPro runs completely through AHI, any sound card whose driver is AHI based
is automatically supported. Also well known module formats get their fair share.
So DBPro is currently able to read and process
- MOD (Protracker/Noisetracker)
- DIGI (Digibooster 1.x)
- XM (FastTracker)
- S3M (ScreamTracker)
- MED (Octamed & OctamedSoundStudio).
As soon as an able programmer will have been found, it is planned to further
develop the program in big steps.
Furthermore it is planned to publish future versions on CD instead of diskettes.
Detailed information about the program can be found on the APC&TCP homepage
which has been extensively updated this week.
In the future, APC&TCP will also work very closely with the DigiBoosterPro
community.
Thus, for example, Dennis Lohr (Psyria) is taking over support for this
extensive program.
In order to have support for the program as uncomplicated as possible, a forum
has been set up especially which can be accessed from the community, APC&TCP
as well as the Amiga Future homepage.
We would be glad if you would write down your suggestions for improvements and
new features in the support forum.

Amiga Arena: interview with Torsten Giebl (Turricane 4 Ever)
If there's any cult figure on the Amiga existing then it is "Turrican"!
A game that had set new standards at its time and had an ongoing influence on a whole genre.
In 1993 the "Turrican" series had ceased on the Amiga with the release of the third part but Turricane lives! With the project "Turricane 4 Ever" exists the possibility of the hero of old times returning to the Amiga.
The Amiga Arena spoke to Torsten Giebl who's working with his team on an unofficial successor and asked for details about the game's progress and how this project came to live.

ScanQuix for USB scanners
The known scan software is now also available in a version for USB scanners. The software package "ScanQuix USB" is based on the proven software "ScanQuix 5" and works with the scanners "HP ScanJet 2200c" and "Epson Perfection 1250". Next to the drivers for these scanners is among other things software for saving, printing and post-processing of the scanned pictures as well as there is for easy creating photo copies.
"ScanQuix USB" needs an USB card with the Poseidon USB stack (e.g. HIGHWAY by E3B). Because of the teamwork with E3B and Chris Hodges (Poseidon) who have actively supported the project is a flawless use also via the USB connection guaranteed.
"ScanQuix USB" is available at Vesalia Computer.

fxPAINT 2.0 in December
We are proud to announce the long awaited version 2.0 of fxPAINT today.
fxPAINT 2.0 includes many new features, that will open up new graphical horizons to you. Besides the generally improved working speed and many new effects, a lot has been done at the modules, too. The fxALBUM- and fxCONV(batch processing)-modules have been heavily extended, new modules like e.g. the "Navigation Builder" and the "Color variations"-wizard have been added.
One of the most important new features is the support for gradients that may consist of a theoretically unlimited number of colors and transparency-values. Together with the also brand-new gradient tool you can easily add gradients to pictures or use them as background.
Furthermore direct support for Truetype®-fonts, PNG-files (loading and saving, incl. all options like alpha-channel, etc.), the system clipboard and Turboprint has been added. The ARexx-port and its nearly 90 new commands as well as the numerous scripts contained offer additional functionality.
fxPAINT 2.0 will, besides the support for 68K-systems, also offer native support for MorphOS, Amithlon, PowerUP and WarpUP and thus, independant of which platform it runs on, allow you to work at full speed. An adaption for AmigaOS 4.0 is already being worked on and will be made available as a free download upon the time of completion.
An overview over all, including many more, new features as well as the possibility to purchase fxPAINT 2.0 at a time-limited special price can be found on the all-new fxPAINT 2.0 subpages. Delivery is scheduled for the first half of December 2002. (ps)

Fun Time World which is the German distributor of the video player software Frogger announces

We are glad to inform you that the development of the unique video player called Frogger has been

Amiga Quake2 Page Online
In cooperation with Daniel Schultz: an Amiga Quake 2 webpage has been started, on which additional material regarding Quake 2 for AmigaOS
will be published in the future - such as new mods and levels, whether created by users or downloaded from the server.
Originally there were 41 Quake 2 mods for AmigaOS. Since then there have been another 20 mods. These additional mods will be
downloadable from the Quake2 page. So there will be 2 or 3 mods offered for download weekly, just check the page and don't miss
them.
To start off, the following three mods are offered:
- ChaosDM - one of the best Deathmatch mods for Quake 2
- Star Trek - contains the entire Enterprise as a level (and new weapons)
- Bots - "Battle of the Sexes" - a CTF Mod, based on classes,
in which a male team and a female team go up against each other.
The requirements to be able to use these mods are that you must have Quake2 for Amiga installed. Quake2 is available from retailers now.

Amiga Arena: Full Version of WBMenu`97
In cooperation with Manfred L. and with the approval of H. Röhricht Amiga Arena
is making possible a further classic full version of WBMenu`97. Here is a snip
from the handbook:
WBMenu`97 is a multifunctional high speed data bank system with an intuitive user
interface, with which you are placed in a position where you can have an overview
and manage and start all of your programs.
To this end WBMenu`97 offers functions, for which unless several programs must
be inserted, and is an offer to all who wish to get the most from their computers.
Thereby it doesn't matter what particular use you make of your computer. WBMenu`97 is
the first program of its type, that can take over full control of the system. Whether it is the
binding of hardware drivers or the loading of the Workbench, it's "no problem" for WBMenu '97.
You'll find more information in the handbook for WBMenu`97!

Audio: AHI/PPC 6 only for MorphOS and AmigaOS 4
Martin Blom, the developer of the soundcard driver system AHI, has reiterated that there will be
neither PowerUp nor WarpUp versions. There is only the MorphOS version (available) and the
AmigaOS 4 version (planned).
Here is his original announcement:
"Yes, indeed, today is November 7th, not July
11th. Anyway, I've been asked to clarify one thing
regarding the PPC version of AHI. There will be no WarpUp version, nor
will there be any PowerUp version. The reason is that neither of these
two systems allow PPC code to be invoked from within an interrupt?,
which is an absolute requirement for AHI. The current PPC version is
for MorphOS only. In the future, I hope to have an AmigaOS 4 version
as well.
1) While it should have been obvious by reading the PowerUp documentation,
there is nothing in the WarpUp documentation or the actual design that
suggests that it will not work; in WarpUp, it could be possible
if the implementation had allowed it. In any case, the days when I could
be bothered to write for a mixed CPU system are since long gone..." (ps) (Translation: dm)

Quake2 Amiga Port Available
On the 2nd of November 2002 at the WOASE convention in London, Quake 2 for AmigaOS officially went on sale.
The game was demonstrated in a "Death Match" between three Amigas. It ran a custom level which was specially
created for the convention. The network server was a PC, in order to demonstrate that PC users and Amigans may
play in the same TCP/IP multiplayer network, however naturally an Amiga could also be used as a server. The
Quake2 packet for Amiga contains an easy-to-use installer script, a startup GUI, and documentation in AmigaGuide
format, including the original version of Quake2 for Windows, which contains the data files.
Over 55 Quake2 mods are to be offered for Quake2 through different channels, including the Internet.
Quake2 for AmigaOS will become available from your local Amiga dealer sometime this week. The price may vary
from dealer to dealer.

Sendo Z100 Will Not Appear
Setback for Bill McEwen: The Sendo Z100 will not appear.
Even in his Executive Update at the beginning of
November, 2002, McEwen was announcing (under point 6) that the Sendo Z100 with the "SmartPhonePacks"
would be produced.
In the article from Heise "Setback for Microsoft's Handy-Operating System"
(see title link) it is made clear that presumably nothing will come of the market introduction of Amiga Anywhere on
this Handy.
Sendo released the following in a special announcement:
»Sendo hat das Entwicklungsprogramm für ihre Smartphones auf Basis von
Microsoft Windows for Smartphone 2002 Software eingestellt.

Pegasos in the Microwave and Three More Bundles
After the successful appearance of Thendic-France
and bPlan at the
World of Amiga South-East 2002
last Saturday, some new Pegasos-related developments became known. The first four Pegasos-bundles
have been determined:
- The unusual "VideoMicrowave" is a remodeled steel microwave with an LCD display
as the door and a Pegasos board on the inside. You'll find information at
http://www.videomicrowave.net.
- The "Development Suite" is a developer package for
the Pegasos, Eclipsis, and Pegasos server stack.
- The "Pega-shush" is a home-server for the long-endurance business of integrating with
other entertainment electronics. The communications occur over a 802.11b network card.
- The "Games Package" is an offer
especially for friends of good game value. More details will be announced at
http://www.pegasosppc.com.
On the 16th of November Thendic-France will spend some time in Poland at the Amiga Show 2002,
and they are going to bring a bunch of Pegasos equipment to test on the basis of a new ISO installation [new MorphOS version - dm].
This will be the first showing of the Pegasos Wireless Camera with the display software to be seen on an iPAQ (this is just a temporary solution
until the Eclipsis prototype is ready).

Amiga to create games and other content for Microsoft Windows ...
Amiga to create games and other content for Microsoft Windows for Smartphone 2002 Software
Snoqualmie, WA, Nov 6, 2002 - Amiga, a leader in games and entertainment
software, today announced the release of games targeting Windows Powered
Smartphones. Using the Amiga Anywhere Content Engine and their new "App
Pak" technology, applications written for Windows Powered Pocket
PC handheld computers will now be available for Smartphones as well. In
addition, Amiga intends to build specific games and productivity applications
that take advantage of the unique characteristics of devices running Microsoft
Windows for Smartphone.
"Amiga has partnered with Microsoft to create the best experience
for games and entertainment on Smartphone devices", said Bill McEwen,
CEO of Amiga. "We have been an early adopter of Microsoft Windows
for Smartphone because of our belief that it can revolutionize the mobile
experience. With our new App Pak technology, users can access applications
on their PDA or Smartphone without having to install them from their personal
computer."
App Pak applications are distributed on memory cards. Users will be able
to purchase the cards from their retail store and immediately use them.
In less than 60 seconds, users can enjoy games and other applications
with just by inserting their card. Just insert the card in the appropriate
slot, click, and play. App Pak applications use little storage space on
local systems making them more functional for PDA and Smartphone devices
with limited resources.
"The Windows Powered Smartphone enables users to do what they want,
when they want, from business productivity to entertainment," said
Mary Rose Becker, group marketing manager for Mobile Devices at Microsoft
Corp. "We're thrilled that Amiga is releasing it's games for the
Smartphone platform, providing our mutual customers with compelling entertainment
options."
Amiga will begin shipping games and other applications for Smartphone
in time for the holiday season this year. To learn more about Amiga visit
www.amiga.com or www.shopamiga.com. Developers who want to receive more
information regarding developing content for Amiga Anywhere can sign up
at www.amigadev.net

Multimedia authoring system: Hollywood available
Andreas Falkenhahn wrote:
Finally! After a long time of development, the Multimedia authoring system Hollywood
is available. Hollywood is a powerful and extensive program which is unique on the
Amiga. You could compare Hollywood with a modern version of Scala: But Hollywood works
fully in 24bit mode and uses only system functions to grant compatibility on every
Amiga system. Because of this extreme system friendly programming Hollywood does also
run on Amiga emulators with great speed. Versions of Hollywood for MorphOS and AmigaOS4
and maybe also AROS are planned. On the Hollywood product page
you will find an extensive overview including screenshots from the program. In the
next days some applications done with Hollywood will be presented here. Hollywood
is delivered on CD-ROM and can be ordered now.
Hollywood is the Multimedia Application Layer for Amiga(tm) and compatible operating systems.
This means that it offers you a script language together with advanced functions that allow
you to create your own multimedia applications which range from a simple slideshow to a complex game.
The big advantage of Hollywood is, that it does all the framework for you. You do not have to
care for example, if your application is going to run on a ECS, OCS, AGA or RTG system. You
do not have to care if the Workbench screen your application runs on has 16 or 16.7 million colors.
You can concentrate yourself on the important thing which is your application and not its enviroment.
Hollywood is fully 24 bit enhanced which means that you do not have to mess around with palettes,
remapping and so on. Additionally it is fully integrated into AmigaOS(tm) and does not rely on a
specific custom hardware. Therefore Hollywood does also run on emulations like Amithlon or WinUAE
with amazing speed.
Using the Hollywood script language, the possibilities are almost unlimited. The basic version of
Hollywood comes with over 150 functions that range from disk operating system (DOS) functions to
functions that allow you to smoothly scroll animations and graphics on your display. There are
also many functions that allow you to display objects, pictures and texts with over 50 cool
transition effects or scale graphics and animations. You can also fade objects, texts and
pictures smoothly.
Hollywood uses the datatypes system to load all graphics, animations and sounds which allows
you to use all formats you have datatypes for. Additionally it supports unique things like
transparent windows which enhance the look-and-feel of your Workbench screen amazingly.
You can use true type fonts (with anti-aliasing), standard bitmap fonts and even the cool
Amiga color fonts with Hollywood.
The integrated sound system allows you to play various types of music modules (including
Protracker and OctaMED) but also sound samples. You have full control over this system because
you can specify which channels to use for play back.
Hollywood is a high-end application that needs some memory to work best. It uses a special
preload system so that all data is immediately accessible and the play back is incredibly fast.
Therefore it is advised that you have lots of memory (16 megabytes+) and also run a RTG
system like Picasso96 or CyberGraphX.
Hollywood is the absolutely number one choice in Amiga(tm) Multimedia nowadays and brings
the Amiga back to its roots...Multimedia! It comes with a compiler which can save your
applications as stand alone Amiga executables which may be freely distributed.
Hollywood is delivered on CD-ROM with many examples on it as well as over 250 kilobyte of
documentation in AmigaGuide format. It is only available directly from the author.
Although all this may sound a bit complicated to you, it is very easy. Programming skills
are not necessary. They are only of use if you want to create complex applications but for
the normal Hollywood usage, you do not need them because Hollywood is really easy to handle.
