New cover scans at the CD32-Allianz
To be able to offer more information to people interested in CD32 and CDTV about the games and applications for these devices there's now a new cathegory "Software" on the CD32-Allianz home page with cover scans and partly also with reviews. Very helpful, e.g. before you blindly buy a game or an application at an online auction. (ps) (Translation: wk)

GFX-BASE: interview with Lorence Lombardo
GFX-BASE has interviewed Lorence Lombardo, programmer of the recently on Aminet published MPEG player 'PegaThlon'. Lorence who is concentrating himself on animation tools (being the author of Anim2gif, Anim2mpeg, Anim2qt but also of other useful freeware tools like HTMLStrip or AmiDiction) has reported us about his future plans and other projects. Of course we have asked him our usual questions, too. Read the English interview here. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Amiga Arena: interview with Mauro Fontana
"Back from dead" - Mauro Fontana breaths life again into the already thought dead editor BlacksEditor! BlacksEditor, at its time developed by Marco Negri and distributed as shareware, had later been continued by Paul Schifferer and is since the "BlacksEditor Upgrade Pack 1" by Mauro Fontana cardware.

BlacksEditor may be counted to the best editors, Amiga Arena made a very complete interview with the actual developer Mauro Fontana. The interview is available in German and English.

Once more it is up to the users if BlacksEditor will come up with new features and whether we will enrich the Amiga with one more "piece of software" in the future! (ps) (Translation: wk)

Filesharing: Audiogalaxy Satellite for AmigaOS version 1.1.1 (cvs 1.38)
There's an update to version 1.1.1 been released (cvs 1.38). AudioGalaxy is a known P2P file sharing service. For Linux exists an open source conversion named "OpenAG", now there's a version of this for AmigaOS available. Further details can be found in the readme.

The program can be downloaded from the home page of the author. In addition you need the ixemul.library (at least v48, to be found on the home page, too) to run the program.

For those who are not familiar with AudioGalaxy yet:
The AudioGalaxy client owns no GUI (graphical user interface) as it runs only in the background. Just run the program, then create an account at audiogalaxy.com and log in using a web browser. Optionally one can use the frontend FSWatcher by Thomas Igracki.

The file search itself as well as the downloads will then be done via web browser. (ps) (Translation: wk)

EZP@gerNG Plugin-SDK Appearances
The Software Developer Kit (SDK) shows in what ways the external call-service plugins may be programmed, in order to send EZP@gerNG over a Web gateway. This is a way for EZP@gerNG broadcasts to not only be sent over the built-in or bundled services and protocols, but also for any service that has an associated plugin.

Near the documentation of these programming excerpts the SDK demonstrates the use of the ezhttp.library and the different functions of a simple HTTP communication, as might be used in the loading of a web-page or the sending of forms.

The SDK is available in download section. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Amiga Society: News about Action-Strategy Game ´Schlachtfeld´
Amiga Society writes: "There are some new things in Schlachtfeld: Eddy has delivered a few unique things in the textures. This allows an optimized 256 color palette to be displayed. The new pictures are then placed online once again. For all of you who now say "256 colors aren't enough..." there will certainly be more colors available in some later phase. But now is the time to raise high Peter's old motto: the game should run on "any" AGA machine. And for that we have a restriction to the old version. Matrox G1000 offered - including OS4 Support (Update)
The graphic card manufacturer Matrox appears to intend to introduce the new product "Matrox G1000" on the 14th of May. The first listings of the technical specifications are shown on many different hardware-oriented websites: matrox.jpg, text.

On ANN Ben Hermans (Hyperion) opened up speculation about whether OS4 drivers would be available for this card: "Oh, you can really trust in the existence of this card. The thing totally creams the Geforce 4. We saw it in action... yeah, OS4 will support this card. But not right away, modern architecture of this type requires Warp3D V5 ("Nova")... This card is lightyears ahead of the other stuff on the market. The only thing that even comes close to it is the P10 from 3DLabs. I'm just happy that I can finally let the cat out of the bag."

Update:
Ben Hermans, the project leader of OS4 found his ANN remarks on several different news forums (see below links); his Matrox G1000 "chatter" was quoted. Apparently Ben was the first to actually see this card. There was speculation that the remarks were really an attack on the nVidia-Imperium, but Hermans disagreed with that in a new ANN posting (that maintained the truthfulness of his earlier comments).

Amiga Arena - Interview with Marius Schwarz
A short while ago a new IRC client debuted: "BenderIRC." The first release of this client was able to square off against competitors such as "AmIRC" and "BlackIRC" through a configurable GUI and a plugin system.

Marius "Cyborg" Schwarz talked with Amiga Arena about the development of BenderIRC, IRC channels, Amiga, and what we may expect in the future. The interview (in German) is viewable here.

Amiga Arena comment by Olaf Köbnik:
"I read some of comments about BenderIRC in the forums, and I want to appeal to you all that at the end of the day it depends on us if these new programs will be developed any further. Programmers are guided by bug reports and constructive suggestions. That's something only we, the users, can provide.

If one enjoys a particular program, she or he should send a short email to the developer, because without that it can very quickly occur that without this feedback the program gets tucked away on the shelf. The Amiga developers are already too few. Lets make an effort to keep the communication going, and surely more people will." (ps) (Translation: dm)

Fun Time World: Distribution of Frogger&SoftCinema quicker now
Some users who ordered Frogger or SoftCinema are still waiting for delivery. Unfortunately we had to stop the distribution short-dated to look for a better solution. The former kind of distribution has taken too much time and therefore wasn't to handle anymore. We had the choice either to stop the distribution at all or to think about a better solution. After some talk with the developer we found an alternative possibility to maintain the distribution and to deliver the software quicker than before.

Everyone who ordered software from us but hasn't received it, has been informed by us about the next steps. New orders will now regulary be sent within the next three days, but also often within the same day.

With Frogger and SoftCinema you will get video/animation player set which is capable of playing mostly all known formats. The development of that software still continues so there will be steadily new updates, which will include not only new features but also significant speed increasements. The player set is time limited available at our old page (title link), the new site is expected to be online from May, the 13th 2002. Of course there are orders per e-mail possible as well. Jobs at "Ermentrud"
We are still urgently looking for assistants for the graphic adventure "Ermentrud"!

Firstly we are still looking for an animation graphics artist! There has been no response after my last claim!! There should be somebody who feels perfect for that!? Secondly there is still need for a colorist for background pictures.

There are detailed descriptions at this site http://www.inutilis.de/software/jobs.html (there you' re able to download example pictures)...

· Animation graphics artist
Ermentrud will have loads of animations (persons). The animation graphics artist's task is to create animations from existing fixed images. Graphics are made within a closed 64 colour palette. For candidacy please send animations of walking, with 8 frames each, made from these fixed images.

· Colorist
The background pictures drawn be made with pencils and then they will be scaned. We are looking for someone who might help with the coloration. The pictures should be colorated in that kind that the original drawings will not be painted over but will be colored. Therefore a graphic processor with layers is required (e.g. Photogenics). This example shows how it should look like (of course without the white areas!). For cancidacy please colorize this picture! (ps) (Translation: ub)

USB card HIGHWAY available from 31.05.2002
The USB card HIGHWAY will be general available on May, 31st 2002 and will be distributed by KDH Datentechnik. This is the first time that Amiga users can connect and use modern USB devices in connection with their classic Amigas.

HIGHWAY is a Zorro II USB card and comes with an integrated 4-port-hub. The user has the possibility to connect up to four USB devices without the need for an additional hub. In addition, the HIGHWAY card can be expanded by the new 10Mbit ethernet modul NORWAY without wasting an additional Zorro slot. A compatibility list for Zorro-boards and Zorro-cards can be found here.

The boards have been developed and manufactured by E3B (Michael Boehmer). The worldwide distribution is done by KDH Datentechnik and your local Amiga dealer will have the cards in stock by end of May.

The scope of delivery includes the USB software stack Poseidon by Chris Hodges. Drivers for USB mice, keyboard and parallel interface (printers) and mass storage devices (SCSI-emulation: e.g. flashcard-reader, ZIP-devices, digicams following the MSD-standard) will be shipped in addition to the HIGHWAY card without any additional cost. More drivers (webcam, digicam and printers) are being developed right now by third party companies.

We do support the development of the Amiga OS4.0 contained USB-stack by providing the USB cards HIGHWAY and SUBWAY. Both cards serve as a reference-hardware for the software-development and will be directly supported by OS4.0. Alternatively it will be possible to use the provided Poseidon stack. (ps)

A.D.A.: New Demos from Mekka Symposium 2002 online
"Phew, we're back. Had a bit of problems with hosting and design took longer than expected. It's still not finished but I decided to update the site anyway. This time, added 4 productions from Mekka Symposium 2002. We start with the nice demo from Reason called Mind Matter Electricity, then we have the technically stunning 64k from Loonies called The Castle. We continue with the stunning demo Little Nell/TBL and we finish with the absolutely fab and rocking hard 64k intro from Potion called Planet Potion.

Added extra screenshots for the following productions: Choke/Spaceballs (+6), Electricity/Appendix(+3), Flux/Ephidrena(+3), Hazchemix/Amnesty(+3), Melba/Appendix(+3), Raybong/Loveboat(+3), Retrospectacular/Contraz(+5), Ride on our enemies/Skarla(+2), Spellbound/Loveboat(+2) and Wildlife/Abyss(+2).

V A N Q U I S H did 2 banners to put on your website if you want to link us (be sure to check out the sinusscroller with starfield and coppereffect banner). Check them out at extras page.

Expect more frequent updates in the future again and more stunning demos from the best demo archive ever." (ps) (Translation: sk)

Instant Messenger: STRICQ-GUI (ReAction) released 4 May
On 4 May 2002 Glenn Hisdal released a new version of ReAction-GUI for the Instant Messenger StrICQ V2. This GUI is an alternative to MUI-GUI of StrICQ. Compared to the previous version the following modifications were made:
  • Added more info to the send/write message windows.
  • Preferences are saved on exit.
  • Status is read from preference file on startup. (If you are online when quitting the program, you will be logged on automatically.)
  • Fixed some bugs (not that I think it will help those who couldn't get it running.
STRICQ-GUI should run from AmigaOS (it was only tested on AmigaOS V3.9) and it needs StrICQ V2.8.1. The installation is described in Readme.

Amiga Society: Various Updates
From the Amiga Society web site:
The hardware page has been updated - unfortunately not yet in German. But this might change in May.

The software page has been improved and new entries have been added. But we could really need some help here.

The book page is also progressing slowly...soon you'll certainly find information about Amiga books on this page.

Any news about Schlachtfeld (Battlefield)? I'm not sure about this. More and more patterns are being created in order to build a good level. The latest units are a little weak at the moment but I hope that the parts will come in soon. Not to mention a new Alpha or even Beta.

Let's hope for the best!

3D: 3DLabs' P10 VPU - When a CPU & GPU collide
On 3 May 2002 an English article about P10-VPU (Visual Processing Unit) by 3DLabs was published at AnandTech.

As a 3D processor this VPU exceeds the previous possibilities of the GPUs (Vertex, Pixel-Shader) and is supposed to be more easily programmed. The article describes the basic architecture of P10-VPU and compares it to GeForce4.

The article doesn't talk about the command setting of VPU. Some information about this is included in the Heise newsticker news: 'Graphic processor for everything'.

The chip is supposed to contain more than 200 SIMD units and it can support complex operations such as loops and subroutines, which the current Vertex and Pixel-Shaders cannot do.

press release about VPU by 3DLabs from 3 May 2002. (sd) (Translation: sr)
