Chat software: AmigaGPT V1.0
Cameron Armstrong has written AmigaGPT, a chat program for AmigaOS 3.2 that uses the power of the chatbot ChatGPT (screenshot). Features:
- AmigaGPT uses the GPT-4 architecture developed by OpenAI to generate coherent, context-aware responses to your input.
- AmigaGPT takes full advantage of the latest AmigaOS 3.2 API and does not require any third-party frameworks.
- AmigaGPT can use the Amiga's speech synthesis capability to read the generated text aloud, using either narrator.device V34 (Workbench 1.x) or narrator.device V37 (Workbench 2.0).
The programme has the following requirements:
- OCS/ECS/AGA Amiga
- AmigaOS 3.2 or higher
- 68020 processor or faster
- TCP/IP stack for Internet access
- AmiSSL 5.9
- an OpenAI account with an active API key

SMB2 handler smb2fs V53.7 for AmigaOS 3/4 and AROS
The Server Message Block (SMB) is a network protocol for file, print and other server services in computer networks and allows access to files and directories located on another computer (Wikipedia entry). Fredrik Wikstrom's SMB2 handler is based on libsmb2 and allows remote access to files via the SMB2/3 protocols (amiga-news.de reported). Changes of version 53.7:
- Merged latest changes from libsmb2 git repository.
- AmigaOS 3 version now uses ReqTools for the password requester.
- Now uses an empty string instead of a NULL pointer when connecting to a share without a password.
- AROS version no longer gets SysBase by reading it from AbsExecBase.
- AROS version: Replaced fcntl() and close() calls with IoctlSocket() and CloseSocket().
Requirements: newlib.library V53.40 or later (or V53.30 as included in AmigaOS 4.1 FE) and the filesysbox.library V54.4 or later for AmigaOS 4, filesysbox.library 54.3 or later for AROS and AmigaOS 3 and optional the requester.class (ClassAct/ReAction, for password requester) for AmigaOS 3.
For all three operating systems there is a GUI on Aminet for creating a DOSDriver.

Compression of executable files: Body Guard Packer 5.6
Lorence Lombardo's "bgpk" is a 68k executable file packer which, according to the developer, makes it possible to protect programs, improve compatibility with programs intended for a Unix-like operating system, and use some of the latest compression technologies.
The program requires AmigaOS 2.x. On systems with a version 1.3 Kickstart ROM, execution of programs packed in this way is prevented, so crashes are avoided. As a further difference to other packers for executable files, programs compiled with vbcc, for example, could also be compressed. In addition, bgpk does not perform hunk sorting or stripping, so that files packed with it are restored to their original state after unpacking. (snx)

AmigaOS 4: Current hardware availability
After ACube Systems recently delivered the last boards to pre-orderers, including shops (amiga-news.de reported), we asked the relevant Amiga shops if they had them on sale:
Alinea Computer offers a Sam460LE complete system for 1299 euros (plus shipping) with the following specifications:
- Sam460LE board
- Uboot
- Cover
- AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition included (OEM licence)
- Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G DDR2 memory 2GB quality memory
- Fractal Design Core 1000 Tower
- High quality 550 Watt power supply with cable management
- 4port SATA PCI controller
- 240GB SanDisk SSD hard drive
- DVD burner
- Radeon HD 77xx 2 GB Gfx board
- Soundblaster Live Audigy FX
As the item can only be ordered against prepayment, there is no direct purchase link in the shop, but must be ordered by enquiry. AmigaOne X5000 are currently not in stock.
For 1269 euro, but in the meantime sold out, Amedia Computer France had the Sam460LE on offer as a complete system. As the maintainers informed us, however, these will be available again during the next week and can thus be ordered:
- a little Micro ATX slim case,
- the Sam460LE 1,10GHz motherboard,
- 1GB memory module,
- 1x 240GB SSD 2.5 harddisk,
- 1x Radeon HD5450 2GB graphic's card,
- 1x Audio PCI Express card,
- 1x PCI Sata card,
- the AmigaOS 4.1 software.
As a specialist in assembling computers, other special configurations with many tower, Ram, hard disk, graphics card, sound card and Sata card variants can also be ordered on request.
Amedia Computer France also continues to offer the AmigaOne X5000/40, which can be ordered on request. When ordering a complete system, an AmigaOS 4 game and a recovery USB stick are included free of charge.
Amedia Computer France is not only maintaining an online but two physical shops as well which are located in France, in Courcelles-Chaussy, and in Luxembourg, in Differdange, where they also sell AmigaOne X5040 towers.
ACube Systems itself does not offer a complete system, but the pure Sam460LE board for around 963 euros.
As the maintainer of the RELEC shop told us, he is in the process of restructuring his shop. He is currently working on offering new items for the Amiga, among others a new design for the X5000, called "the red D", a desktop case. Sam460 boards are also to be offered. We will report when this will be the case.
The American shop Amiga On The Lake does not currently offer any PPC systems.

Preview video: Action puzzle game "Old Towers"
Already in 2020, "Amiga Retro Development" had begun to port the action puzzle game Old Towers from the Sega Mega Drive to the Amiga. The aim of the game is to dash across walls and ceilings, collecting all the coins and finding the way to the exit, past treacherous dangers and traps. The port is written in assembler and uses 32 colours. The code is almost written, the music is in progress. However, a graphic artist is still needed to take care of the level design and graphics. Anyone who wants to help, will find an e-mail address in the accompanying text of the video. If the work is completed successfully, an AGA version is planned for the future. (dr)

Video player: Amos Anim Player V2023.06.14
The "Amos Anim Player" of the group "ELECTRIC BLACK SHEEP" is a very simple IFF-ANIM player that runs on any Amiga. It can play compressed IFF-Anim formats synchronised with a separate IFF Audio Sample (or MOD) (amiga-news.de reported).
In the current version there are now two different player variants: AnimPlayerMovie aims at 25 FPS and neglects information within the chunk, while AnimPlayerProper tries to consider as much information as possible (colour changes, sound names within the file etc). The Reducer is a stand-alone programme to reduce the data size between consecutive frames. (dr)

Background: Influence of the cache on PowerPC CPU (Czech)
Martina Hřebcová is known for her extensive and detailed reports on PowerPC hardware. This time she looks at how big the influence of cache is on the speed of PowerPC CPUs, here in particular the G3 to G5 processors. The starting point for the article was her research on how she could best upgrade her Powermac G4 1.42. She came across a post in the Macrumors forum by user 'Ervus' who had found out that the G4 7457 / 1.6 GHz with a 2 MB L3 cache is faster than the G4 7447 / 2.0 GHz without the L3 cache. Inspired by this, she looked at the other processors and their cache and wrote this article. (dr)

Adventure: "The Oregon Trail" in development
Sami Vehmaa - among other things, start bar QDock or maze game Cube - has started a new game project: "The Oregon Trail" (YouTube video of a live presentation) is set in 1847 and is a text-based adventure game. The goal is to survive the 2040-mile east-west wagon route, a journey that lasts about half a year. Food must be rationed, you have to hunt, trade and cross rivers, with the survival of the group having priority.
The chosen game character (banker, carpenter or farmer) determines the level of difficulty of the game, which ends when the travel group is eliminated or one has reached Oregon. An Amiga (or Amiga emulator) with a graphics card (960 x 540 in windowed mode) and 30 MB free RAM are required. (dr)

Developer diary: "Settle the World" 06/23
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegel continues to work on his turn-based building and trading game "Settle the World" (amiga-news.de reported). His latest developer diary entry is about the implementation of an election system and a hapiness system:
"I started a large restructuring of the game. The goal is to include elections and a better happiness system. This is a lot of work that will take many weeks.
At the moment, the game is far too easy and offers no challenge.
Computer opponents and natives will be a challenge later on....but there is still a long way to go.
Before that, an election system will be built in. If the player loses an election, the game is over for him.
To achieve this, the needs system of the inhabitants and their happiness must be reworked.
The first thing to be done is the happiness/needs display, which has been completely rewritten.
It looks almost the same as before, but works a little differently.
In the future, higher classes of inhabitants will need more and different food. This is where farms and grapes come into play.
Grapes are a pure bonus resource, similar to gold. Wine can only be harvested on these bonus squares, not on other squares.
Farms are needed to harvest and process grapes.
Farms function like small towns, but without citizens and their needs.
Grapes can later be processed into wine here. Wine is a luxury good for the aristocratic class and increases their happiness, which is an advantage later in the elections.
But farms should not only be able to process grapes, they should also produce meat.
Meat is additional food for the aristocratic class as well.
Cattle should be able to be kept on a farm and processed into meat by a butcher.
Unlike wine, however, meat does not increase the aristocrats' happiness, but is a basic requirement. So that all this can be produced, there will probably be four new units in the game:
- Cowboy, for cattle breeding on a farm
- Butcher, processes cattle into meat
- Grape picker, harvests grapes from the corresponding bonus fields
- Winegrower, processes grapes into wine
The whole thing is not yet fully thought out and tested. The farms are still a work in progress....but things are moving forward." (dr)

ACube Systems: Delivery of all pre-ordered Sam460LE boards
Press release: Dear valued Customers,
we are pleased to announce that all preordered Sam460LE boards have been shipped after extensive testing and preparation. We sincerely hope that our customers will enjoy using this latest Sam460 board, and we would like to express our gratitude to all of our preorder customers for making this board possible. Your continued support is truly appreciated.
Furthermore, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the Sam460LE of this production run is now running at 1.14 Ghz instead of 1.10 Ghz. Although this may not be noticeable from a certain standpoint, we believe it is still interesting information to share.
For those who placed orders after the preorder period ended, we have also shipped your orders. We hope this will make more Sam460 Amigans happy. If you have not yet ordered your Sam460LE, don't miss the chance to own one with the names of the whole team on the board itself. Get yours now.
Thank you for choosing our products. (dr)
