Report: Swapping the CPU in MicroA1 (Czech)
Martina Hřebcová is known for her extensive and detailed reports on PowerPC hardware. Based on his previous article about the influence of the cache on PowerPC CPU she now reports how she swapped the G3-CPU in her MicroA1 from 750FX to 750GX and finally overclocked GX to 1200 MHz. Because of the large 1024 kB cache, speed increase especially with emulators and web browsing are great. (dr)

Xbox: 201 Amiga games in stream with Antstream Arcade
Owners of the Xbox game console from Microsoft now have access to 201 Amiga games via streaming, provided by the British provider Antstream. (Or "had access", respectively, since according to today's updated FAQ, Antstream Arcade has been "temporarily" removed by Microsoft from their store.) For the usage you can choose between a 1-year and a lifetime fee.

The licensing of the games from Amiga Corporation by Antstream was announced last year at Amiga37, Evercade was mentioned as another licensee at that time. Antstream Arcade is also available for PC, Mac, Android and Amazon's Fire TV. (snx)

PDF magazine: REV'n'GE 148 (Italian/English)
Besides the Italian original issue, the PDF magazine REV'n'GE ("Retro Emulator Vision and Game") is also available in English. The magazine's reviews compare, if available, the different ports of classic games to the various platforms of their time. Furthermore a focus is on rather unknown retro games.

Amiga-related, the current issue is about Seek and Destroy, Star Crusader and Starglider. (snx)

Proof of concept: Shoot 'em Up "Amiga E.D.F."
The developer 'S0Y' (among others Temptations port for the CD32) has taken a look at the Shoot 'em Up Earth Defense Force, originally released for the SNES, and tested if an implementation and continuation on Amiga-AGA computers would be possible (YouTube video). The game, which is explicitly not intended to be a pure port, should have the following features:
  • 32 colours with "AGA features"
  • 020/14 MHz
  • 25 FPS
  • CD32 audio-tracks
  • 1300 Kb RAM used so far (672 kb Chip + 628 Fast)

Program for DeepL use: AmiTranslate 0.2
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's programme AmiTranslate (video) serves as a link to the translation service DeepL and is available for AmigaOS, AmigaOS 4, AROS (x86, x64, ARM) and MorphOS.

In version 0.2 some bugs have been fixed: the scrollbars for the text edits now work and pdf documents do now care about returns or line wrap. Additionally, an user suggestion was implemented: a context menu for both edits to copy and paste text.

Besides an SSL-secured internet connection (OpenSSL3 under MorphOS resp. AmiSSL for the other systems) the program also needs the MUI class texteditor.mcc. (dr)

Video: Repairing an A590 Rev.6, part 3 and 4
In the first part of his video series on repairing an A590, Robert Smith looked at the functionality in detail and the onboard Fast RAM, the second partsecond part is all about the hard disk. In the third part (YouTube video) of the series, a Blue SCSI V2 is installed, and the fourth episode (YouTube video) deals with a modification of the A590 that gives it more speed. (dr)

Platform game: Rastan demo v0.32
Rastan was released in 1987 by Taito for arcade machines. A few days ago, we reported on the demo version of the Amiga port which is currently in development. The demo now was updated to version 0.32. Changes:
  • Fixed: Jumping, swinging and then trying to do a downwards plunge mid-swing would glitch out the animation big-time.
  • Grabbing onto ropes while doing a downwards plunge would cause Rastan's legs to think they were crouching and not climbing.
  • The flying demon's legs would transplant themselves onto a different monster if his upper body went off-screen while the legs stayed in view.
  • Fixed some enemies spawning in above ground if the player was still in mid-air at the time.
  • A couple of bugfixes and tweaks for the lizardman and bat AI's.
  • The HD version had issues with music and sfx playback on 68040 processors. Fixed with the latest Scorpion update.

Hall of Light: Relaunch of Amiga game database
For a good week now, the Amiga game database "Hall of Light" has been presented in a new design. The most important changes:
  • Readable game URLs e.g. https://amiga.abime.net/games/view/hunter instead of https://hol.abime.net/764
  • Game pages now have a Game->Version->Release structure instead of separate game entries. For example, Zool has three versions (ECS, AGA and CD32) and Driller/Space Station Oblivion are in one entry.
  • New advanced game search and game listing.
  • Responsive design that adjusts for desktop/tablet/mobile.
  • New look and feel that tries to modernise but keep the old colour scheme, tabs etc.
  • In-page game info/screen/file editing for editors/admin.
  • DBSs are split into two screens alongside each other (horizontal for desktop, vertical for mobile).
  • Default screen size is doubled to 640x512.
  • Artist credits can have roles alongside.
  • Features (programming language, enhanced features, graphics, sound) moved out of Quickmatch to separate section.
If you don't like the new design, you can access the old design at https://oldhol.abime.net/. However, this will no longer be updated. (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.15 / Firmware 1.4
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Version 1.15 of Greaseweazle Tools as well as version 1.4 of the Greaseweazle firmware add a new board type: V4.1 (AT32F4xx, USB-C). (dr)

Markus Steffan (ANF)

Game Jonathan: Research in "Kronstadt" mentioned by Memminger Zeitung (German)
In 2018/19 Markus Steffan went on a search for clues in "Kronstadt", the city of the game Jonathan (German Wikipedia entry), which is based on the city of Memmingen (Germany) and was released in 1993 for Amiga and MS-DOS (amiga-news.de reported in German).

On July 22, on "Fischertag", the German local newspaper "Memminger Zeitung" now also reported about this research as well as his intention to write a novel about the game later on - including a sequel. (snx)

Platform game: Early version of "Jack In The Pit"
For the AmiGameJam 2022 and the KiwiJam 2023, "Jack In The Pit" was written in 48 hours (YouTube video): the platform game "combines a short length with a sharply increasing difficulty curve. It also features a wide variety of vertical parallax effects to create a sense of 3D depth". It runs on any Amiga with 1MB. (dr)

Developer diary: "Settle the World" 07/23
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegel continus working on his turn-based building and trading game "Settle the World" (amiga-news.de reported). In his latest developer diary entry he reports about changes on the graphics system und of pathfinding. Christian would be happy about users who try out his current development version for a few hours and then report to him where there are problems, ambiguities or crashes.

"In the last few weeks, I was forced to rewrite the entire graphics and unit system of the game from scratch. Over the course of a year, I have repeatedly added new functionalities and graphics. The original design, however, was not designed for this, as the game was supposed to be playable within six months as an entry for a competition. So the programme code became more and more chaotic and confusing. Due to other restrictions, it was also no longer possible to add new buildings or units. So I was faced with the choice of letting Settle the World "die" or investing a lot of work and completely rewriting the game. The graphics system is now much simpler. I'm not quite finished yet, there are a few graphic errors, but my development version is at least playable again. The number of bitmaps needed in the memory could be reduced, so that more valuable Chip RAM is free during the game. This can be used later, for example, for in-game music tracks.

I am also working on the citizen happiness system. I noticed that it was not understandable for the players why some citizens of a city are unhappy and some are not. Now, in my development version, you can click on the smiley icon at the bottom right of a city and when you move the mouse cursor over a house, information about what makes the residents happy or what they are missing is displayed on the right side of the screen.

It's not quite finished yet, but it's already very helpful.

In my current development version of Settle the World, pathfinding has been also reworked.

Since I couldn't find any BlitzBasic 2 example code for pathfinding last year, I converted a code example from the PC to the Amiga without understanding exactly what happens there. Unfortunately, this resulted in units that moved diagonally from bottom left to top right, or from top right to bottom left, only moving "stair-stepped", or taking huge detours. Now that I have read up on the subject properly, I also understand what happens during pathfinding. The error has now been corrected and the units now also move diagonally correctly in all directions. It cost me many hours of time, but it's worth it.

Land units will always try to avoid rough terrain like mountains, swamps and forests. In doing so, units will always prefer roads, even if it means taking long detours. This does not matter, however, as the movement of units on roads is three times as fast as on flat terrain." (dr)

Retrohax blog: Amiga 500 upgrade #1
As Retrohax.net writes, he had restored hundreds of retro machines to their original state over the past years (sometimes with minor modifications) and he was kind of tired of it, so the time had come to try something different.

So he decided to create a new series of posts in which he will try to describe upgrades and visual modifications of the 20 remaining unrestored Amiga 500s. Each of these Amiga 500s will be unique and described in a separate blog post. As soon as such an Amiga is completed and tested, he will start an eBay auction with it. This is post number 1 of 20. WHDLoad: Graphical user-interface iGame 2.4.1
iGame is a MUI-based frontend for starting WHDLoad games (amiga-news.de reported). George 'walkero' Sokianos has released version 2.4.1 for AmigaOS 2.04 and higher, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS. Changes:

Added
  • Now the Genre list is populated from the igame.data files and the genre file, if it exists, although it is not necessary. The genre filtering is working with these new values
  • Added a new cycle box that lets the user filter the results based on the chipset. This requires in settings the "Prefer igame.data files" to be enabled
Fixed
  • Fixed a hit when the entry properties are requested without having a selected entry.
Changed
  • When real-time filtering is enabled at least 3 characters are required so as to be initiated. Less than 3 characters are ignored, unless the filtering by pressing the enter button is enabled.
  • Removed the filtering options from the Genre list and moved them to their own select box above the entries list
  • Now, even if the list entries list is populated a new repository scan will update the Chipset and Genre information based on the data found in igame.data files.
  • If the "Prefer igame.data files" is not enabled those files are not used during the scan of repositories
