Mastodon client: Amidon 1.1
Dimitris 'MiDWaN' Panokostas, author of the Amiga emulator Amiberry, has released version 1.1 of his Mastodon client Amidon for AmigaOS 3 (amiga-news.de reported). Changes:
  • Implemented Profile view
  • Updated Readme with more details on the requirements
  • Added more icons (GlowIcon, MagicWB, 4-color)
  • Eliminated the dependency on the MUI Hyperlink class, as it caused issues with some users and it's not part of the MUI 3.9 package.
  • Redesigned the Login process, instead of a link to press on, you now have a copy/paste procedure with buttons to help you.
  • Only open the Login window if a server name was provided. Otherwise the link would be empty and there wasn't much of a point.
  • Fixed a crash when trying to save settings without having logged in first (Anonymous mode).

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.10
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Yesterday version 1.10 of the Greaseweazle Tools was released providing the following changes:
  • New diskdef ibm.160
  • gw erase: New option --revs=N
  • gw read: Fix --retries=0
  • MacOS: Explicitly search for CAPS library under /Library/Frameworks
  • gw: Minor fixes to flux-to-bitcell conversion
  • gw: Disallow abbreviated long option names
  • SCP: Fix footer metadata format

Amiga disks on PC: FloppyBridge 1.4
Using Robert Smith's plugin FloppyBridge (video on how it works), emulators like WinUAE and Amiberry can work in real time with real floppy disks. Today he has released version 1.4. Changes since our last news item:

Version 1.4
  • Fixed issues with stalling mode not working properly, or not as expected
  • Updated stalling mode to work better with diskspare device which seems to be very impatient! (writing is not recommended!)
  • Updated the icons for the supported hardware and rendered them transparently
Version 1.3
  • Fixed Greaseweazle Drive A/B not selectable properly
  • Fixed issue with warning message about diskchange on Greaseweazle always re-appearing
  • Fixed Greaseweazle Shugart support. (**Does not support disk change** - it will manually check for disks. A PC Drive is strongly recommended)

AmigaOS 4: Shader player Shaderjoy 1.25
Shaderjoy allows displaying and creating Shadertoy compatible fragment shaders. Fragment shaders, also called pixel shaders, are programs that are executed per fragment (pixel) on the GPU.The ogles2.library 3.2 and Warp3D Nova 54.16 are required. Now Juha "Capehill" Niemimaki has released version 1.25. Changes:
  • Add keyboard channel. Also remove some keyboard shortcuts to avoid conflicts.
  • Add projects files (.sjp) for those example shaders that require textures.
  • Replace text buttons with more compact images.
  • Show busy pointer during shader compilation.
  • Disable uninitialized variable check (in icon) due to glCompileShader issue with some shaders: future ogles2.library should fix this.
  • Fix loading of arexx.class.
  • Fix busy looping of ChannelWindows.
  • Refactor some GUI code.

Preview video: Amiga port of Breakthru
After the release of the Wonderboy port (amiga-news.de reported), 'acidbottle' now turns its attention to the next Amiga port of a game: Breakthru was released in 1986 by Data East and is a horizontal shoot'em up in which the player controls an armed military vehicle, making his way through enemy forces - consisting of soldiers, flamethrowers, helicopters, tanks, jeeps etc. - to ultimately recover a stolen fighter plane. - to ultimately recover a stolen fighter plane.

The Amiga port will be available for OCS/ECS and AGA Amigas. Area 1 is almost finished, Area 2 and 3 are currently in progress. As the developer writes, "a couple of in game mechanics need refining and plenty bugs to iron out but is essentially fully functioning and playable." (dr)

Mastodon

Mastodon client: Amidon 1.0
Dimitris 'MiDWaN' Panokostas, author of the Amiga emulator Amiberry, has released version 1.0 of his Mastodon client Amidon for AmigaOS 3 (amiga-news.de reported. Requirements:
  • AmigaOS 3.x
  • AmiSSL 4
  • MUI 3.9 or newer
  • The following MUI classes:
    • Hyperlink.mcc (available in the MUI 4.x and 5.x archives)
    • TextEditor.mcc
    • BetterString.mcc (required by TextEditor)
    • HTMLview.mcc
  • codesets.library
  • 68020+ CPU
  • 8MB RAM
  • An internet connection and a TCP/IP stack running (cURL will check for bsdsocket.library on startup). AmiTCP 4, Roadshow or emulators with the bsdsocket.library option enabled will work.
  • A web browser will be needed once, for the first time you authenticate your account.
As the developer tells us, the release also serves to be able to find and fix any previously undiscovered problems. He is already working on an update that will add some additional features based on the feedback.
The basic functions are available, but some things are not possible due to the current limitations of MUI in combination with Hollywood. For example, notifications are only displayed as plain text, not HTML. MUI Listviews could not contain complex objects, so some compromises had to be made.

The start-up time on a real Amiga could be improved: it is currently quite slow on a 68060 Amiga at 13 seconds. This and many other problems could be solved if he rewrote the programme in C/C++. But that is something for the future, depending on motivation and time.

Basically, he recommends using MUI 3.9, because HTMLview, the MUI class used to display HTML content in Amidon, has problems with some versions of MUI under AmigaOS 3.x. It does not display content with MUI 4 or 5, so at the moment the client only works properly with MUI 3.9. Basically HTMLview seems to have problems with the display of content behind HTTPS links (e.g. images). MUI 3.8 can also be used, but it has some problems with the display of content in the list views, which is why it is not recommended. (dr)

Hyperion/Cloanto litigation: judgment in the main lawsuit issued
Cloanto had sued Hyperion in 2017, initially to have a judge declare that the Italian company is the rightful owner of the "Amiga" mark and that Hyperion neither has the right to fight this trademark registration nor register similar marks like "AmigaOS" or "AmigaOne" itself. The lawsuit was later merged with another one inititated by Hyperion, which also added Amino, Itec and Amiga Inc. as additional parties to the litigation and expanded the scope of the laswuit to cover issues of breach of contract, trademark violations and alleged IP theft.

Mike Battilana of Cloanto had attempted to also have his 'C-A Acquisition Corporation', the entity that acquired the Amiga copyrights from Amiga Inc. in early 2019, added as another plaintiff to the above lawsuit. The judge denied this request, since the motion was filed way too late. A few days later, the C-A Acquisition Corporation filed its own lawsuit against Hyperion, but this case is currently frozen until the main lawsuit has been resolved. Already in 2019, the judge declared that Cloanto lacked standing to sue Hyperion for breach of the 2009 settlement agreement.

Last tuesday, judge Martinez issued a judgment in the main litigation between Amino, Itec, Amiga Inc. and Cloanto on one side and Hyperion on the other. Basically, he declared that none of the four plaintiffs has any standing to sue Hyperion for any of the alleged violations raised by them:
  • In addition to Cloanto (see above), Amino, Itec and Amiga Inc. can't sue for breach of contract, since they transferred "all rights [...] including the right to sue [...] for past infringements" to the C-A Acquisition Corporation.
  • Cloanto's accusation that Hyperion changed copyright notices in their AmigaOS releases to assign ownership to itself, might be a violation of copyright - but thanks to a "Non-Aggression Clause" in the 2009 settlement agreement, only the C-A Acquisition Corpoation could hold Hyperion responsible for that.
  • The various alleged violations of trademark rights are considered moot, partially because Hyperion withdrew its objections to the other parties' marks and abandoned its own attempts to register trademarks in the US and partially because the only party that could prosecute trademark violations is C-A Acquisition Corporation.
If none of the parties object to this ruling, the case would end without resolving any of the issues between Cloanto/C-A Acquisition and Hyperion. Judge Martinez simply declared that only C-A Acquisition Corporation - renamed to Amiga Corporation in the meantime - is entitled to sue Hyperion for breach of contract or violating trademark rights or Amiga related copyright. Such a case already exists, but has been stayed until the main litigation discussed here is resolved.

Approached by amiga-news.de, Mike Battilana didn't want to issue a statement "yet". Hyperion posted a press release on its website, referring to this judgment as a "sweeping victory". (cg) (Translation: cg)
