Emulator: WinUAE 1.5.2
In this new version of the Amiga emulator WinUAE several bugs were fixed as well as two new functions implemented: On the one hand relative ROM-paths can be saved in the ini-file and on the other hand there is an experimental support of the OpenAL sound.

Fixed bugs:
  • Random crashing if USB mouse or joystick inserted
  • Only titlebar was visible if minimized window was restored
  • Bottom part of display was not updated in bigger than display RTG modes
  • uae-configuration/uaectrl didn't always work
  • Bsdsocket emulation was not initialized in some configurations
  • Catweasel MK4 joystick/mouse compatibility improved
  • uaescsi.device media change didn't update all geometry parameters
  • Sound mute on/off inputevent fixed

AmigaOS 4: Amiga Image Storage System 4.3
Martin 'Mason' Merz has published version 4.3 of his "Amiga Image Storage System" (AISS). AISS is a system for managing toolbar graphics under AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4.x, AROS and MorphOS.

Features of version 4.3:
  • Over 2000 toolbar pictures and animations
  • 24-Bit-PNG pictures with 8-Bit alpha channel
  • Reworked documentation in PDF format (aiss43.pdf, 1 MB)
  • AmiUpdate support
  • Real transparency for "ghosted" images
The author points out that the process of installation may take a while and that there is not a window of progress meanwhile.

The AISS version for AmigaOS 4 is available under the title link and the ports of other systems will be available on Aminet soon.

If you want to support Mason's work you can order a present for his son from the Amazon-wish list. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Print magazine: Amiga Future 74 (September/October 2008) published
Press release Today issue 74 (September/October 2008) has been published. This means that all subscriptions, preorders and dealer supplies have been brought to the postal office.

In this issue you will find reviews of WinUAE, AmiBlitz, MorphOS 2.0, AMuse, Cave Story and lots of more. A more detailed description of content and excerpts can be found at the title link.

The Amiga Future is available as an English and German print magazine directly from its editorial office and some Amiga dealers. The Amiga Future can be obtained as a single issue or subscription each with or without a cover CD.

As always you will find much PD software and some full versions like Photo Folio, Astral, Battle Space and others on the Amiga Future cover CD. There are only a few magazines left of issues 69 to 73. All previous issues are outsold. Of course the cover CDs are still available.

Amiga Future needs your support: We are looking for editors for the magazine. You should own a classic Amiga or Pegasos and know its workings. Furthermore you should have some experience in writing reviews. As well as that, your native language has to be either German or English which you should be fluent in. Please don't forget: The Amiga Future is a community project.

In addition we are still looking for translators for the magazine. Again your native language should be German or English and you should be fluent in reading/writing both of them. Interested? Please contact us via e-mail at Andreas@amigafuture.de. (snx)

New Minimig cores available
Dennis van Weeren writes: Thanks to the hard work of Jakub Bednarski, updated cores are now available for download at my Minimig site. Jakub's version fixes many long-standing bugs and finally adds floppy write support.

Please note that Jakub's cores behave somewhat differently than the previous cores so please read the provided readme carefully. Again, many thanks to Jakub for this new update! (snx)

Music-disc: Planet Hively for AmigaOS 3
"Orta" has ported the music-"disk" Planet Hively to AmigaOS 3. The 68k-version is based on SDL. AHI, a graphic board and a JIT-emulator (a real 68060 is much too slow) are required.

An AGA-version is also planned but it needs some optimations. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Cloanto: Release of Amiga Forever 2008 "RP2" / Announcement of C64 Forever
For a few days already, a free update for Cloanto's emulation package Amiga Forever 2008 is available via the Software Director, including all previous updates and introducing support for the new RP2 file format (amiga-news.de reported). Below you can find the official press release that has been published today.

Cloanto Releases Amiga Forever 2008 "RP2", Announces C64 Forever

Cloanto released this week Amiga Forever 2008 "RP2", the latest version of the award-winning Amiga preservation, emulation and support suite for Windows and other platforms, and a first batch of 10 games in the new RP2 format. Both the RP2 update and the new games are a free download for current users.

Amiga Forever 2008, the most significant release in the Amiga Forever series, already set new references in usability while more than tripling the featured content and providing easy access to a universe of free downloads. The "RP2" update (from RetroPlatform Player, the technology used by Amiga Forever) adds support for the new RP2 file format and content delivery, recognition and configuration framework.

RP2 is a simple and standards-compliant wrapper format, essentially a ZIP archive containing one or more disk image files and an XML manifest. Full information is being shared with download sites and other partners.

Does the emulation world really need a new format? Well, RP2 does not aim to replace the existing disk image files: there will always be ADFs, etc. Cloanto's project involving automatic identification of disk images and automatic configuration of the emulation system also remains ongoing, and will soon flow into RP2.

The new format aims to solve another aspect, i.e. how to easily download, organize and play sets of multiple disks, and treat each game as a single file, just as users do with MP3s. Today, ZIP archives can be downloaded from games sites, but they still won't play automatically. ADFs might do that (with Amiga Forever they already do), but this wouldn't work with games that need more than one disk image.

That's where RP2 aims to deliver, making playback of an .rp2 Amiga game file as simple as playing an .mp3 music file: one file, one game, nothing else to remember or configure. And users will be free to rename or reorganize the files, while existing investment in Amiga disk images will be preserved by means of automated conversion options.

Amiga Forever is still far from perfect, and we know that. Thanks to the precious support of our customers, we keep working on other fronts, which include:
  • Merge the current heuristic configuration logic with the autoconfiguration library
  • Make it possible to create, edit and share configurations
  • Make it easier to add or remove content from the player lists (Games, Demos, etc.)
  • Improve online search
  • New partnerships
The RetroPlatform player and content framework were designed from the beginning to be modular and platform-neutral. The Amiga alone, while full of memories and passion, remains a risky "niche" for a software house. In order to achieve better stability and growth potential for the project as a whole, we decided to support a second platform which we all love and know well from our past.

This means that Amiga Forever will soon get a little 8-bit brother (or sister), to be named C64 Forever. More information will be released soon at www.c64forever.com.

Your Amiga Forever Team (snx)

USB-Stack: Poseidon 4.2 for E3B-products and MorphOS PowerUp
For owners of the E3B-products Subway, Highway, Algor and Deneb as well as for MorphOS PowerUp users there is an update of the USB-stack Poseidon written by Chris Hodges. You can download it via Trident-Online-Update or on the website of the author.

This upgrade to the latest version 4.2 is for free. For users of older versions (3.x, 2.x) as well. But if you want to support the author you can send him a present by ordering a product of his Amazon wish list.

Changes in version 4.2:
  • Support for suspend/resume of USB devices for power saving
  • Improvements of usbaudio.class, hub.class
  • More massstorage.class workarounds for buggy devices
  • Major bugfixing for PTP class
  • New Ethernet class driver for Davicom DM9601 chipsets

The MorphOS version should be only used for MorphOS installations on a Classic Amiga. You should not use it on a Pegasos or an Efika.

Starting with version 4.0 the USB-stack has not a keyfile but is only licenced for E3B-hardware. There is not an opgrade option for further products (Spider, Thylacine, Amithlon). So please do not inquire for it. (cg) (Translation: dr)
