AmigaOS 4: Updated versions of AbiWord and Gnumeric
Edgar Schwan has updated his ports of the word processing software AbiWord and the spreadsheet Gnumeric (Screenshot) to the X11 environment AmiCygnix. Changes of AbiWord 2.8.6 and Gnumeric 1.10.17:
  • Because of a bug in the last package, charts could not be created or edited in Gnumeric tables. Fixed now.
  • Gnumeric spreadsheets can now be embedded into an AbiWord document.
  • Program relinked with the latest libraries.
  • Various minor optimizations

Obligement: Update of Amiga Games List
Since April 1991 David Brunet has been maintaining the "Amiga Games List". By this 50th update the database now lists 13.048 games, level editors, data disks, expansions and interpreters, divided into the following categories:
  • 12468 games
  • 330 expansions and data disks
  • 147 Game and level editors
  • 103 Interpreters
Thanks to Sébastien Jeudy the games list now is saved in a databse. By this new features like sorting the list by single columns or calculating current statistics are possible. (cg) (Translation: dr)

New browser for MorphOS in development
Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek from the MorphOS team who recently developed the IMAP capable e-mail client Iris now is working on a new browser for MorphOS which is not a further development of Odyssey but a completely new approach based on the latest version of the HTML rendering engine Webkit.

Piszczek explained that the browser will probably require 1 Gigabyte RAM and will not support video playback or the "webinspector" mode of Webkit due to the limited processor and graphics card performances of the computers currently supportd by MorphOS. Already now the project has high demands on MorphOS and the SDK, among others errors happened in the compiler and the TCP stack as well as Exec and others components had to be adjusted. Therefore public beta versions will not be released before the availability of MorphOS 3.14.

In a discussion on morph.zone the developer publishes short status messages. Today for the first tima a screenshot has been published. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Audio player: AmigaAMP 3.27 (Update)
Thomas Wenzel wrote: Again there is a new and bigger update of AmigaAMP. Many things have been internally reorganized to simplify maintenance and extension of the software in future. By intensive betatesting hopefully all bugs have been removed.

As usual the update is only available on the AmigaAMP homepage. As soon as the program turned out to be free of serious bugs the update also will be also available on Aminet and via AmiUpdate.

Changes:
  • Streaming:
    • Added XSPF playlist support.
    • Fixed playing MP3 files directly via HTTP.
    • Added HTTPS support via AmiSSL.
    • Stream URL Behandlung überarbeitet, speziell bei Weiterleitungen.
    • Revised stream URL parsing, especially during relocation.
    • Revised stream connection error display.
    • Fixed connection timeout error requester.
    • Fixed string conversion in case converting from UTF-8 fails.
  • ReAction:
    • Revised equalizer button height.
    • Made left hand side and right hand side buttons in main window the same width.
    • Time/remain toggle by clicking on time display.
  • Skins:
    • Corrected display of character 'a-acute'.
    • Fixed right mouse button handling code.
  • OGG:
    • Fixed error handling while reading OGG files.
  • MPEG:
    • Fixed amp playback of MPEG 2.0 files (smaller frame size).
  • GUI:
    • URL string in URL requester is now static.
  • Features:
    • Added MIDI support by using GUS patches installed in SYS:Utilities/Timi/GUS.
    • Added raw ADTS (AAC) support for both streaming and file based playback.
Known issue: If no MIDI patches are found then the playback stays silent, without any error message. This is a feature of the used library tiMIDIty.

Update: (04.04.20, 14:50, cg)

Thomas Wenzel has released a "hotfix" update that fixes a potential crash when using a 'skin'. The version number didn't change, but the internal build number which is displayed in the 'About AmigaAMP' dialog has increased to 623. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Cloanto (ANF)

Networking solution: Amiga Explorer 8
Press release: Cloanto, Amiga software developers since 1986, released today version 8 (8.0.1.0) of Amiga Explorer, the Amiga-PC networking software that first saw the light in 1997. New features include:
  • Windows File Explorer Ribbon support
  • New "AE" command line tool (type "AE Help" for options)
  • Protocol extended to query server-side Amiga Explorer software and operating system details
  • New changelog and early access update checking functionality
  • Support for additional PC serial port speeds, also with manual entry of speed setting where possible
  • Improved usability in Offline mode (namespace extension remains functional, exposes ReadMe.txt file)
  • Improved Setup Wizard
  • Worked around an issue whereby the serial Break command was not transmitted properly during initial setup through some USB serial interfaces
While remaining compatible with older versions, the namespace extension for Windows was rewritten from scratch to support the latest Windows 10 features, including the File Explorer Ribbon.

Previous versions of Amiga Explorer were capped at 128 kbit/sec on the Windows side, reflecting original UART APIs. This was not a limitation when used with original Amiga hardware, which had similar constraints. Nowadays however, inexpensive USB serial interfaces for PCs can be connected to Amiga third-party serial expansions, resulting in transmission speeds like 230.4 kbit/sec, 460.8 kbit/sec or even more. Amiga Explorer 8 introduces support for programmable baud rates, meaning that with a high-quality null-modem cable and the appropriate serial port hardware, speeds that are 5-10 times higher than before can be achieved.

Under the hood, additional changes including a cross-platform "core" feature set that also powers the new command line mode, were made to better support future extensions and improvements.

Upgrades are free to all Amiga Explorer and Amiga Forever Plus Edition customers. Amiga Explorer is also free to try under a shareware license. Registration is appreciated, but many features, including the new command line mode, are fully functional in trial mode.

Traditionally, updates to the Amiga (server) side of Amiga Explorer have also been made available via an "AExplorer_Update.lha" file on Aminet. This file too has been refreshed. As the new Amiga version includes functionality to support updates originating from the Windows (client) side, Amiga-side patch releases like this one could become less necessary in the future.

The full Amiga source code and the Windows "core" source code is available to a closed group on GitHub. Windows core features include the data exchange features and the command-line user interface, i.e. everything that is needed to implement, study or support the full protocol. The Windows namespace extension and its installer are not currently part of this set. The plan is to extend the open source availability once an improved version of the data exchange protocol reaches stable status. (cg)
