Heise: Apple demonstrating dual CPU Macintosh
"On the so-called hardware keynote on Apple's World Wide Developers Conference, Apple's hardware head Jon Rubinstein and Marketing head Phil Schiller demonstrated a Power Macintosh G4 with dual PowerPC-7400 CPUs. The two stressed that the system is only a technology demonstration. It is not a product announcement, not even a product promise. So, the system remained hidden under the table for the whole demonstration."

PowerOS

PowerOS - Open Source Part 2
Claus Hermann beginnning of May announced that the project because of lack of time and resources has come to a halt, and he therefore has decided to release the soucecode and continue with the project on an open source basis. Claus has now started the second phase of this ans now writes: Ok, the Source files are ready. The Developer page is still being modified. "How is this OpenSource supposed to work", you may be asking yourself. Very easy. Anyone that is interested just needs to write an email to developer@poweros.de.

Many have asked if that is it for PowerOS. No, naturally not. This is only the first phase of the project. I am trying with this project to reach as many people as possible. Even the normal non-programming user is welcome, for things such as ideas and other input. With this PowerOS will not be a simple clone of AmigaOs, but somthing new, indepentant and better.

AmiWest Press Release 3
AmiWest will be held on the 29th and 30th of June in Sacremento, California. It is the largest convention on the west coast. You can read about details at www.sacc.org/amiwest/.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Preliminary list of exhibitors at AmiWest 2000 announced!

A prliminary list of companies and clubs that are either participating in or exhibiting at AmiWest 2000 has been posted on our web page at http://www.sacc.org/amiwest/

AmiWest 2000 is the west coast all Amiga show which is being produced in Sacramento, California, at the popular Holiday Inn, Sacramento NorthEast, 5321 Date Avenue Sacramento, CA 95841, on Saturday, July 29th and Sunday, July 30th, 2000. The Holiday Inn venue proved to be such a hit for last year's show that we are again holding it there.

Show times are Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 10am-4pm.

AmiWest is in it's third year and is the only all Amiga show produced on the West Coast. The show has proved very popular for Amiga enthusiasts in the Western United States.

This preliminary list of exhibitors includes AEMail, which produces an email client for the Amiga; Amiga, Inc., the producers of the Amiga; AntiGravity, which makes the BoXer; AudioLabs, producers of stunning audio software for the Amiga; Compuquick Media Center, an Amiga dealer coming all the way from Ohio; FWD Computing, selling CD-ROMS for the Amiga; G & G Publications, producers of "The New Amigans" Amiga publication; Hyperion Entertainment Software, producing game software for the Amiga; Merlanica Industries, another Amiga dealer coming from Arizona; Nordic Global Inc., developers of the "Miami" and "Miami Deluxe" TCP/IP stack software for the Amiga; Nova Designs, Inc., makers of "ImageFX" (image processing software) and "Aladdin 4D" (3-D rendering software); the Sacramento Amiga Computer Club (SACC); and the User Group Network (UGN), the world-wide Amiga network of user groups which will be conducting an IRC directly from the AmiWest 2000 show floor.

We are adding new exhibitors daily. Watch our web site for the latest updates.

If you are interested in exhibiting at AmiWest 2000, please submit the form that is provided on our web page. We need to know early who will be exhibiting. Booth sizes and pricing are now posted. Special booth pricing will be available for user groups.

In April at the A2K show in St. Louis, the newly reorganized Amiga, Inc announced many advances in the three short months since the purchase of the Amiga by Amino (renamed Amiga, Inc.) from Gateway. The Amiga appears to have a new life that is definately on an upswing. The new Amiga Corporation is headed by Bill McEwen who can be remembered by participants at both AmiWest'98 and AmiWest'99 as a very enthusiastic supporter of the Amiga. Also part of the Amiga team are long time Amigans Fleecy Moss and Petro Tyschtschenko.

Strategic alliances have been formed with such well known names in the computing world as Tao-Group, Red Hat, and Corel. In addition partnerships have been formed with well known Amiga companies such as Haage & Partner, Hyperion, and Epic Marketing. All of these companies will be producing software for the new Amigas.

After what has transpired in three months, four more months should bring many more announcements from Amiga, Inc. at AmiWest 2000.

You can learn more about AmiWest 2000 by accessing our web page at:

http://www.sacc.org/amiwest/

This weekend event will again showcase the progress that IS the Amiga Community.

USA AAA Awards results

For Immediate Release
Permission Granted To Redistribute Without Alteration

Contact:

Martin Sahlén - director@aaa-awards.org, +46-8-673 73 23 - Director, The AAA Awards
Bob Scharp - bscharp@icon-stl.net - Amiga 2k organizer

Stockholm, Sweden - Sunday, May 14, 2000.

The 1999 USA AAA Awards were presented at the Amiga 2k show in St. Louis, April 1-2 2000. The first USA AAA Awards went to Kermit Woodall (Community) and SoftLogik Publishing (Product). Please accept our sincere apologies for this late announcement.

We hope to provide you with photo coverage of the event soon, available at www.aaa-awards.org/winners/1999.php.

The Community award

The AAA Award USA - Community 1999 went to Kermit Woodall of Nova Design. He was selected the greatest 1999 US Amiga personality by the US Amiga community in the public voting.
The motivation given was:

"For being an inspiration to the US Amiga community, with never failing commitment, by attending shows, involvement in initiatives such as ICOA and the AAC, and always giving appreciated support to the community and dealers."

The Product Award

This year also marked the launching of the first Product awards. The AAA Award USA - Product 1999 went to SoftLogik Publishing, represented by owner Deron Kazmaier. Their DTP package PageStream 4 was selected the best US Amiga product!
The exact motivation given by the jury was:

"Best product released for the Amiga, and certainly the best publishing package available in it's price performance class. SoftLogik has been a rock in the Amiga community, developing good products like PageStream for many years. It is without doubt that Amiga would not be able to hold even the position it does today, without products like PageStream 4."

Still to come... ...is the AAA Award International, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom! Please check our homepage www.aaa-awards.org for up-to-date information on where & when.

Asimware with new website
The great AsimCDFS seems to be gone! Asimware recreated their homepage, and there is nothing to be seen of AMIGA products! Only HotBurn!

We asked Asimware about it, and yesterday recieved this answer from Richard Giannini: "We will have the downloads for AsimCDFS and MasterISo return shortly. The download code has to be rewritten to fit the new web site structure. I apologize for the confusion."

clickBOOM: S-files #4
The adventure Nightlong, which spans 3 CDs, is going into final testing stage. At clickBOOM it was already successfully played under AmigaOS 3.5. The CDs contain the animation sequences in low and high resolution. The high one is for PPC and 060 systems, the small one for 040 and 030 Amigas.

The Amiga port of the game classic "Z" by the Bitmap Brothers is 50% ready. The port is very difficult, since Z is written in Assembler, but the most difficult part is done.

The Aminet-GUI has a new feature! Starting immediately is AULA (Aminet UpLoad Archive). This is an archive containing the weekly upload lists. They can be sorted by date or directory. As a special service, I will also offer the so-called Top Aminet Uploads. These are uploads I described briefly. They can also be found on the AmigaFuture homepage, since I create them on their behalf.

Atari-Lynx emulator: Handy v1.05
On May 12th, Mathias Roslund released the Amiga version v1.05 of Keith Wilkins' Atari Lynx emulator "Handy". With this release, the Amiga version closes the gap to the Windows version.

The Amiga version is based on Handy v0.70 and offers high compatibility. It supports the CD32 joypad, running on CGFx screen modes with a resolution of 320x200. Some of the changes since the last version:
  • Change: now uses ReadArgs instead of custom CLI subroutines
  • Change: by pressing HELP, a screenshot can be saved in PCX format
  • New: support for Nostalgia
  • New: SCREENMODE parameter support

Handy requires an Amiga with PPC board, WarpUP v4.0+, 16 MB RAM, AGA or CGFx. Additionally, the lynxboot.img file is required.

The handheld game console "Lynx" (with color screen) was developed by R.J. Mical, Dale Luck and others for Epyx. Distribution was done by Atari. It was released at the same time as the Nintendo Gameboy, but was not successful due to the higher price and lower run time, due to the color display.

Development system for Lynx games was the Amiga.

AmigaTalk v1.5
AmigaTalk version 1.5 is a GUI version of 'Little Smalltalk' (v1.0 by Tim Budd) for Amiga systems, enabling using almost all Intuition and some OS functions from SmallTalk. It is being worked upon supporting more OS functions, but AmigaTalk is far from being complete.

However the system is stable, and additionally contains a collection of test files as well as a detailed documentation.

AmigaTalk requires AmigaOS v3.5+, a CPU 68040+ and 2 MB free drive space. Additionally, DeckBrowser from InovaTronics is required. The author offers to send the CanDo libraries or the DeckBrowser upon request.

Smalltalk is a programming language developed in the 80ies by Alan Kay at Xerox, and is considered being THE OOP language.

Submission: Interested in gfx module for DKB Wildfire?
Since the "Inferno" gfx card for the 68060 accelerator "Wildfire" from DKB was not produced, and as a reaction to many discussions on the Wildfire mailinglist on possible alternatives, a survey has been started at the title link to judge how many are interested and which features are wanted.

This does not come with a promise that something will be produced, or any company be contacted.

SWOS Euro 2000 probably won't appear
SWOS Euro 2000 by ALIVE Mediasoft will probably not be released due to lack of time.

A new version of SWOS is ready and could be released in time for Euro 2000, but ALIVE Mediasoft is lacking the time to get all the team and player names into the program. If there is somebody willing to help, perhaps the game could be released in time.

Independantly, a new version will appear for the next UK season in August.

Aminet-GUI now banner-free again
Alexander Kurtz writes:
Due to me doing my military service in the Luftwaffe starting May 1st, 2000, only now I saw that Prohosting has changed their rules and is now placing a banner to every page ending on .html or .htm.

These banners sadly destroyed the looks, if not the usability of the GUI. Due to my military service I was able to react only now. The GUI should be free again of Prohosting banners in all important frames. So it is again possible to navigate the page, and make use of it.

I want to say sorry to all visitors of my site, and warmly invite you to visit my site again as frequently as before. Soon I will create an archive saving the upload lists, so they can be saved for reference. I can NOT check them for obsolete files, however, but would welcome hints.

Again I want to stress that I am maintaining the GUI all alone, and that I am still looking for someone interested in assisting me, since my online time is right now limited to weekends. Please contact aminet@web.de.

Confusion about ATC v1.1
While uploading the final version v1.1 of the FTP client AmiTradeCenter to Aminet there was a delay, giving the impression the archive was not uploaded successfully (while, in fact, it was successful). Due to this confusion, another beta version of ATC v1.1 (prerelease 8) was published on the program's homepage. Please simply think of this as prerelease 1 of ATC v1.2.

Remarks on asyncio.library V40
First of all many thanks for the positive response to the new library!
I haven't expected one misunderstanding, though, which I'd like to put right.

The 68k functions are NOT faster under WarpOS! You only get the speed increase if you call the new PPC functions from a PPC!!

The reason is the context switch! If you would access the PPC from the 68k side, you'd get a switch every time that would slow down the system! In this case the library would be even slower. Existing programs that run under WOS would have to be adapted for the new PPC functions!

I hope I haven't killed the entire euphoria, but the many feedbacks regarding this make this correction necessary. If somebody has any interest, I would be glad about a V40 version for PowerPC. Sadly, I can't realize that (yet).

asyncio.library v40 with WarpOS
Many developers know it - the "asyncio.library", which can significantly speed up media access by asynchronous transfer. It is now available with WarpOS support, while being 100% compatible with v39, and still being usable with a pure 68k. The archive is freeware. Developers wanting to use the new library can use the archive for free. An Aminet upload will follow (util/libs).

News on THF
After some months of development, the multiplayer add-on "The Heretic Fortress" for Heretic II is finally finished (actually it had been for a while already, but I did not find the time for an announcement). THF bases on the latest source from the PC version of THF, v4.5, and supports joining PC- as well as Amiga-servers. It will be released in time with Heretic II.

The requirements are the same as with Heretic II (PowerPC, WarpOS v4 installed, 64 MB RAM, hard drive, CD-ROM). Warp3D support is optional (since THF is based on the Heretic II engine). The full version of Heretic II has to be installed.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

Those of you who prowl the net regularly have probably already
discovered "Amiga World". For those who haven't, let me suggest you
take a look. "Amiga World" is the new web-based publication for
Amigans from Amiga itself. It's available on the Amiga web site at
www.amiga.com. As you wander through its pages, you may see some
familiar names. The publication is managed by Fletcher Haug, of "Amiga
Informer" fame, and many of the contributers to "Amiga World" came
from "Amiga Informer", including guess who? We hope to make "Amiga
World" a premier publication for the Amiga community at large.
Speaking of publications, things have taken a strange but not
necessarily bad-as-it-could-be turn in England. The following
statement was recently posted on the Czech Amiga News site:

"2.5.2k Biggest Free Amiga games magazine

David Connolly: "Following on from CS&E's successful takeover of
Amiga Survivor magazine, I am pleased to announce that A1200! magazine
has not disappeared completely! Obviously people who have paid good
money for our new magazine will now get Amiga Survivor, but every
month CS&E will, in addition, produce A1200! magazine which will be
sent out free to anyone that requests it (you can e-mail
interactive@csande.com). Without an audited figure some companies may
feel they can get away with the equivalent of me saying we print
500,000 copies so whilst in fact the actual print figure will be
around the 15,000 mark I will invest in an audited free circulation
figure so legitimate companies can advertise with a legitimate
audience. A1200! magazine is already confirmed as the biggest selling
Amiga magazine in the UK due to our mailing list."

David Connolly, CS&E"

Not just publications are in the news, as you will see when you read
through this issue. As always, we hope you enjoy it.

Brad,

Last month's Wired had an article on "obsolete" computers, mentioning
Commodore 64 and Amigas, at least in passing; not very interesting,
actually.

This month's Linux Journal has a couple of brief mentions of Amiga,
about the attempts to resurrect it; the writer Jason Kroll was pretty
complimentary, even tweaked the Linux community for _still_ having
nothing like the Toaster.

Hi Greg,
I suppose we should be grateful for any mention of the Amiga in the

lately don't have a clue what's going on. Thanks for pointing out

Dear Brad Webb

It is really an interesting approach that Amiga Inc has come up with
and I support their ideas very much. But because the new AmiVerse is
hardware independent I would like to know from which platform I get
the best performance.

It is of course a difficult question but if developers create their
new programs on a 500 Mhz PC a 200 mhz PowerPC could maybe be too
slow. Who knows?

Best regards,
Andreas

AU Answers:
Hi Andreas,
It's probably too early to know which platform will perform best with
the Amiga system software. I suppose in theory, the fastest hardware
overall would perform the best when using a hardware independent
solution. In practice, I'm sure there will be many subtle influences
on system performance. We'll probably have to wait for a while after
the software is in general use to really know the answer to either of
your questions.

"Amiga pioneered the creation of multi-media, and easy to use

with Amiga as they continue developing products and technology for
current and future computing devices which are focused on making
computers and the Internet a natural part of everyday life."

Corel and Amiga first announced they were working closely to support
the new Amiga Operating Environment in July 1999. The two companies
formed a new relationship to ensure that Corel's award-winning
software applications were supported on Amiga's new line of products.
Corel and Amiga continue to discuss possible future alliances.

There will be full support for the existing install base of Amiga
users, and more announcements will be forthcoming about the current

Amiga Announces Plans to Embrace Sun's JavaTM Technology as the
software platform for forthcoming New Amiga products

Amiga is the home of a large number of the world's leading edge
multimedia developers, artists and users.

Historically, the Amiga platform has targeted providing the most
compelling multimedia content to desktop systems, the new Amiga
platform will continue that tradition on desktops and address
connected, multimedia digital appliances such as webphones, digital
TVs, and web pads. Now the world's most creative multimedia engineers
can leverage the JavaTM platform to target a vast array of new
products and solutions.

The underlying technology used in the Amiga system is a Sun Java
branded version of PersonalJava developed by the Tao Group. Tao's
software is a media-rich environment that was designed from the ground
up to run on a wide range of low cost, processor and memory
constrained consumer devices that offer a wide range of multimedia
capabilities.

Within Amiga's new target markets, several key standards groups are
adopting Java technology; HAVi, OSGi and DVB are three examples. Amiga
is adopting the popular Java platform for developers creating new
generation content and applications that could also be used on
industry standard devices such as in home networking and digital
television. The millions of Java technology developers will be able to
deploy their innovative content on a wide range of new products that
will excite consumers.

"We are excited to see a longtime favorite of the multimedia
developer community turn to Java technology as their programming
platform of choice. The deeply loyal Amiga developer community will be
able to leverage the wealth of Java development tools and support to
build new, highly innovative and fun applications. We are also pleased
that Amiga will work with the Tao Group, a company dedicated to
compatible implementations with media rich capabilities," said Curtis
Sasaki, Director of Product Marketing, Consumer Technologies, Sun
Microsystems, Inc.

"The New Amiga is a breath of fresh air for the industry, and has a
talent pool of developers who continue to lead the way in the creation
of dynamic software products," commented Bill McEwen, President and
CEO, Amiga. "Sun and the Java platform provide us with great tools, a
large number of potentially new developers, and a well supported
platform, and experience in emerging markets. The Tao intentTM
implementation is unique in being able to provide the key system
requirements needed to run the Java platform in mobile and consumer
products."

Francis Charig, Chairman of Tao Group says, "Combining the world's
most advanced community of multimedia artists and engineers with the
new industry standard software [Java] is the next natural step
forward. It is wholly appropriate that Sun, Tao and Amiga work closely
together and the result shall be a wealth of Java technology-based
media content for the consumer and other markets."

Amiga's Partners

Tao-Group

The first partnership came from the announcement with Tao-Group which
has been moving along great. We will soon be showing the first round
of the Amiga/Tao system. There is a great deal of work to be done. We
are far enough along to launch the new developer system for Tao at the
St. Louis show.

Haage & Partner

We have entered into a long term relationship with Haage and Partner
that will provide API's and a path towards to the future OS. This
includes new updated versions of Storm IDE. They have also committed
to porting all of their software to the new platform. We are also
excited to work with H&P on a new version of the WarpOS that will
allow the new Amiga to run on PPC accelerator cards. This means that
an Amiga that has a PPC card running WarpOS will be able to run the
new Amiga on that card! That's right. The new Amiga running on the
current A1200s! More on H&P will become public as we continue to move
forward and work through the testing programs. We are very excited
about this relationship.

Hyperion

Hyperion and Amiga have entered into an agreement for the porting of
several games to the new Amiga. This along with the great work that
Ben and his team have done in working on a new 3D gaming engine for
the new Amiga. They have been working very closely with the Amiga
development team and Tao-Group to make the development of games for
the Amiga a cut above the rest. We are very pleased to be have them as
members of the new team.

Epic Marketing

Thomas Steiding has been a great supporter from the beginning. Epic
has announced that not only will they be making their games available
on the new system, but that they have secured the rights for many new
games. More on Epic with a follow on announcement later.

An open letter response from Anti Gravity to COSA

We recently received this email from Steve Crietzman (President of
COSA). We drafted this somewhat tongue-in-cheek response to state as
clearly as possible our position in regards to the philosophy of open
source in general and to the AmigaOS in particular.

Steve Crietzman (President of COSA) wrote:

Hello,

I am the president of the Campaign to Open Source AmigaOS, COSA for
short, AKA the Open Amiga Group.

For quite some time now, we have been campaigning to have the AmigaOS
released as open source, and it looks as if we may finally succeed now
that Amino, Fleecy, Bill etc. are at the helm.

It's clear that Amino are putting their resources into a
"next-generation" Amiga system and OS.

But for the classic range, the next-generation looks like this:

o The BoXeR will be recognised as the hardware successor to the
Classic
Amiga, and Anti Gravity will be recognised as the future hardware
 developer of the Classic Amiga.

o COSA will be recognised as the developers of the Classic Amiga
operating
 system.

So we share something in common. We're both committed to the future
of the CLASSIC Amiga.

I am sure it would be useful if we could maintain an 'open line' to
each other, to share ideas, to tie 'future hardware' to 'future
operating system'.

That's why I am contacting you.

While I don't have anything specific to add, I was thinking that by
combining our resources, or working together, we can define a
migration path for the Classic Amiga - hardware and OS combined - the
open-source AmigaOS project, and the BoXeR as the hardware.

Let me know what you think, and feel free to contact me if you'd like
to explore possibilities or have any ideas.

Keep up the good work on the BoXeR!

 Best regards,

Steve Crietzman President, Campaign to Open Source AmigaOS/Open Amiga

Hello Steve,

During the early part of the 20th century Russia dominated the
northern part of Asia. This vast country lived under a system of Czars
who had completely lost touch with the people. No one knew the
workings of the system and the bureaucracy had become so huge that
even the government could not manage its own tasks. The people
suffered from misinformed decisions and were contantly relayed to
other departments and offices while the Cszar lounging in "Redman
Square" living in luxury oblivious to their plight. This would turn
out to be a "fatal error!" Any attempt for the people to take the
initiative and do something to solve real problems was deemed an
"illegal operation." The people suffered, then became irritated and
finally upset to the point of rebellion.

A young man named Joseph Stalin recognized this growing
dissatisfaction among the people and realized that the only way to
cause change would be for the masses to band together against the
reigning regime and the Bolsheviks were born. Enlisting the help of
the great socialist philosopher Karl Marx, they drafted a plan to
overthrow the Czar. Marx believed that only through the elimination of
personal property would the people band together with enough strength
to overthow the emperorship. Their eco-political philosophy took hold
as the people, destitute, saw hope in their plan. Gradually they
gained control of areas of the country and eventually overthrew the
Czars.

As long as the Czar was their enemy, everyone lived in harmony. They
shared everything in common for the good of the "cause." But with the
overthrow of the regime, an interesting thing happened. The "cause"
moved from revolution to implementation. Immediately the people began
to fragment in dozens of different directions. Everyone wanted "their
place" and "their way" in the new order. Stalin, losing his grip on
the people, gained control of the military and subdued the
insurrections. The new communist regime reverted to many of the
tactics it had hated so much in the Czars.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a young powerful country
flexed its maturing capitalist muscles. Despite going through some
lean years, the United States emerged from World War II as a
superpower. It was based upon the principles that each individual had
the right to his own property and incentives for the individual to
invent new markets, create new products and develop new alliances for
personal benefit as well as for the good of the economy. The profit
motive coupled with good ol' Yankee ingenuity caused American economy
to explode. No two business men operated the same way, they each
created their own style. This system became the envy of the world,
copied by all, except in the leadership of the Soviet Nations.

With the people suffering and the economy dying, the Soviets tried
desperately to maintain control of their once impenetrable empire. But
the people who had enabled the revolution against the Czars would no
longer live under the rule of the Soviets and the iron curtain fell,
leaving only the entrepreneurs standing throughout the world.

Amigans have always been good capitalists, wanting to make money from
their ideas. As a result the Amiga is the only personal computer to
create new markets. Open sourcing anything works as long as there is a
monolithic enemy, but it collapses when the enemy falls. This trend
has already begun to occur with the 26 implementations so far this
week of Linux. Closed source, open architecture is the American way,
the most successful way. Americans need to see the guts of the
architecture in order to tinker and invent, but they need to own their
inventions to get rich and fuel new ideas.

We at Anti Gravity believe in open architecture, closed source
capitalism. There is still a lot of money left in the Amiga Operating
system. We plan to make money from it and we hope everyone else in the
Amiga community makes money as well. We'll all make more money if we
own what we make and keep the trade secrets to ourselves.

May the Amiga never be divorced from making money, because making
money by inventing things is REALLY FUN! With the new Amie OS, the
people in the Linux community can make money and have fun. The users
can have fun because the Amiga will be doing mystical magical things
again. Long live the BoXeR, the completely capitalist computer for
everyone who has ever loved an Amiga.

Sincerely,

The Anti Gravity Products Team

            H Y P E R I O N ' S S C H E D U L E

Leuven, 17 April 2000
Introduction

In the next few days Hyperion entertainment software will celebrate
its first birthday. When we started this venture, our stated goal was
to bring high-end, high-quality entertainment software to the Amiga.

We feel that we are well on our way to accomplish this. Over the past
year, we built up an impressive code-base that will allow us to
dramatically cut down on the development time of new Amiga
conversions. Part of this code-base has already been made available to
the Amiga development community: MiniGL, chunkyppc.library, an
improved version of Warp3D (together with Sam Jordan) etc.

We mastered two of the most impressive 3D engines out there: the
Quake II engine and the LithTech engine. Together with Titan we
brought Smacker, an industry standard video-codec, to the Amiga.

We are now ready to accelerate our development cycle over the course
of the next few months.

At this point we would like to address some frequently asked
questions.

Why does Hyperion only port old PC games?

Whilst it is true that we have licensed some titles from December
1998, we do not limit ourselves to older games, as will become
apparent in the next few weeks. Titles like Shogo, Heretic 2 and SiN
were chosen for a reason. First of all, it should be remembered that
the current Amiga PPC hardware is already two-three years old and that
it will be hard-pressed to keep up with state of the art PC games.
Secondly, we prefer to port older, quality titles rather than newer
games nobody will remember six months down the road. Finally, it
should be remembered that most of the time there is period of many
weeks and usually even months between the time a title is released on
the PC and the time it is actually finished and the last patch is made
available.

Will Hyperion support new Amiga hardware based operating systems not
developed by the Amiga Corporation?

The answer is simple: no. Leaving aside considerations such as
further market fragmentation which would lead to sharply reduced sales
in the Amiga market and the fact that we would need to rebuild our
code-base, we want to make it clear, once and for all, that licenses
are tied to a specific operating system, not to a specific hardware
platform. If it were otherwise, we would just get a license for PPC
and we could port for any OS running on PPC including MacOS, AmigaOS,
Linux PPC, Beos etc. In reality our license agreements limit the scope
of our rights to AmigaOS meaning ports for AROS, PowerOS, MorphOS,
Neutrino/QNX etc. are LEGALLY IMPOSSIBLE and would require prior
re-negotiation of our license agreements. We would think it highly
doubtful that large entertainment software companies would even
consider this without very substantial upfront royalty payments which
would be impossible to recuperate due to low sales. Obviously, the new
Amiga OS based on Elate IS covered by our existing license agreements
as it is an OS developed and marketed by the Amiga Corporation. We
therefore can and will support the new Amiga OS.

Work in progress. An overview.

Heretic 2: The Amiga conversion of Heretic 2 was completed some weeks
ago but is currently stuck in Quality Assurance at Activision due to
problems with the test-machine we sent them. We have dispatched James
Sellman to Santa Monica in an attempt to get these problems out of
the way. Heretic 2 was demoed extensively on two machines at the
Saint-Louis show and despite running continuously for two days, never
 produced a crash.

SiN: Development of SiN is progressing very rapidly thanks to the
code and knowledge-base we built up for Heretic 2. We anticipate
completion in 2-3 months at most. More information will follow soon.

Shogo: Porting Shogo:MAD proved to be quite a challenge. Our
contract-work for Monolith on the software renderer for LithTech V2
(all platforms) has caused further delays but we are now rapidly
nearing completion. More information will follow.

LithTech V1 & V2: The significance of the Shogo port goes far beyond
the specific game in question. Hyperion is bringing this world-class
3D engine to the Amiga platform which will allow for easy porting of
upcoming titles based on LithTech. The list of licensees for the
LithTech engine is growing rapidly (see:
www.monolithnews.com/lithtech2_licensees.html) and each and every one
of this titles can be brought to the Amiga in a matter of weeks.
Moreover, Hyperion has the right to extend its agreement with
Monolith to cover all LithTech based titles developed and owned by
Monolith which includes at the time of writing the very promising
 (and as of yet
unreleased) titles Sanity and No-one Lives Forever (for further
information see: www.monolithnews.com). If you want an absolutely
stunning demonstration of what LithTech V2 can do, go and download
 Monolith's promotional video at http://www.lith.com/lithtech/release.

Worms Armageddon: Development was delayed because of lack of
development resources. We are still targeting an early beta-version
 for the end of Q2.

Freespace: Development will start soon. Expected completion by early
 Q3.

 The future...

Hyperion is on the verge of finalising at least three more agreements
for top quality entertainment titles to be released in the year 2000.

Upgrade your machine and stay tuned!

MetalWeb is the first visual HTML editor for AmigaOS. The philosophy
behind the software is that you should not need to understand HTML in
order to create pages within MetalWEB. You can create web pages via a
DTP style editor or the 'old way' via a tabbed, coloured text based
source window. Indeed, like the award-winning Dreamweaver you can open
both the edit and source window, work within one of the windows,
whilst the other window updates, automagically!

The latest version of Metalweb is intuitive, fast, and easy to use.
Now you really can create a website without extensive HTML knowledge!

Please remember, MetalWeb is shareware. If you use it, please
register the software and help support Amiga software development.

Download MetalWeb today and see how much easier it is to create your
HTML documents.

Features

o New Source Editor, with coloured tag highlighting
o Easy to use imagemap editor
o Cut, copy and paste text from/to clipboard.
o Edit HTML directly, or use WYSIWYG layout
   o Visual image sizing
   o Visual creation/modification of tables

   o Wordwrap
   o Supports many HTML tags
   o Easy creation of frames
   o Embedded object support
   o User friendly GUI
o Works in conjunction with web browsers, eg. Voyager3

This is a full release. It has undergone thorough testing by both the
alpha testers and by numerous public beta testers, and should be
stable as a rock.

The VFlash and Vpdf plugins are not included in this distribution
archive, in order to keep it to a reasonable size. Please visit
http://v3.vapor.com/ for download information.

The VFlash PPC module needs a new version of ppc.library, which is
available from ftp://ftp.meanmachine.ch/pub/amiga/ppclib/

As usual, the existance of this release does not imply that further
development will stop :) In fact, the next version is already in the
works.

{NOTE: no sooner had the above release arrived, than the following
popped up on the web. Brad}

16 Apr 2000
hi gang,

Amazing ain't it? A week between updates. Voyager 3.2 is now out. The
Vapor.com website and th V3 Portal site aren't updated yet {they
should be by the time you see this issue of AU. Brad} but the 3.2
update and full 3.2 archives are on the download sites already.
Basically a few more javascript commands are implemented, some
refimenment to the FONT FACE handling, and a bug fix on crashing
caused by the history file or something

Mushroom Software (also known as F1 Software) will be closing down
for approximately 6 months, due to some personal conflicts which will
be going on over that period of time Questions, enquires & other
business related questions can be directed to mushypd@redrose.net
where they will be answered as soon as possible.

Im going to be divorcing from my wife, and quite possibly losing my
green card (please dont publish this bit) which means I have to
concentrate my money, time, and efforts, on keeping my greencard, in
order to remain here in america. If i was sent back to england, I know
I wouldnt be able to keep F1 for very long. I know the Amiga community
is very honest to its sources, and I want to keep this tradition. If
you have any questions, you can always contact me first.

We will return however, with an even better lineup of software, and
far more PC titles, to keep our existing customers more than happy.

I would like you to mention the above (except why im leaving for a
while) as ive supported the Amiga community for almost 9 years now,
and i really feel bad that I have to bail out for such dumb
circumstances. It really sucks as i`ve had to cancel 2 brand-new Amiga
software signups, but i promise you as a fellow Amiga user & coder, I
will be back in the near future, with several new games, including a
network version of a stunt-car-racer type game (Internet playable, PC
version 30% done) which is compatible transparently with PC and Amiga
due in the beginning of next year

YAMI 4 available
YAMI is a small hardware interface enabling most serial PC mice to be connected to the Amiga. In the Shredzone, the Amiga mouse interface YAMI can now be ordered in version 4. Changed from the predecessor, true wheel support has been added; a commodity now handles the conversion to NewMouse compatibe events. Also new is the interface being shipped fully assembled, removing the need for soldering. :-)

Owners of YAMI 3 can update to YAMI 4 for free, as promised. Only the costs of p&p have to be covered, and some soldering be made.

New MUI is comming!
Laire (Ralph Schmidt, coder of the now-gone phase5 and the founder of MorphOS project) said this on ircnet #amiga around Sat May 6 00:50 EEST 2000.

We were talking about AmigArt Morphos poll (saying that 41,5% won't buy Morphos unless WOS and WarpUP support is added):

So MUI4 *is* really coming, it seems. How come Ralph seems to be the only one that REALLY makes things happen. :-)

Oh yes, and this is really no news as Ralph pointed out. Just read the text at the title link.

There has been some internal discussion about this. I think it is important to check the results of the poll mentioned yourself, since there have been more than two options in it... (mb)

New wheelsupport software for Mroocheck PC Mouse Interface
The new Mroocheck.driver ver.1.2 supports all the possible Amiga graphic modes. The previous version of the Mroocheck.driver supported only: PAL, NTSC, DbPAL, DbNTSC and all the modes in graphic cards.

The Mroocheck PC Mouse Interface sends information to Amiga on wheel movements in the form of analogue signals. The internal A/C converters built into Amiga are used to decode them.

The immense advantage of this solution is that wheel signal decoding does not hog the computer's processor.

The Amiga A/C internal converters are based on counters of lines of the image generated by Amiga's graphic chips. The current driver update allows calibrating these converters for any graphic modes.

MUImp3 Alternative MUI for NCode
Meanwhile, MUImp3 is available in version 1.5 and I think I can now mention it in public ;). MUImp3 is a MUI for the MP3 encoder NCode. MUImp3 uses the command cdda for reading digital audio data (where supported by the drive) and can access the CDID files for generating tags.

Thanks to ARexx, downloads from the internet are possible with the program ACDB. This all is based on Arexx, MUIRexx and the rexxtricks.library. MUImp3 is available on Aminet and on my website under »Projects«.

Heise: Free Server for Color Calibration Profiles (ICM)
«At the address www.ProfileHelp.com , the Jetsoft Development Company offers a server for ICM profiles. Such profiles are used to improve the color output on specially equipped systems (e.g. current Apple Macintosh computers or Windows 98 and 2000 PCs). After a free registration, JetSoft transfers a password via email that entitles you to freely download the profile files.»

Wolf Faust, known to Amiga users as programmer of the Amiga printing driver program »Studio« writes about it in the Heise forum:

Besides www.ProfileHelp.com there's also http://www.coloraid.de. www.coloraid.de is still under construction, but you can already find there not only free profiles, but also free software for the creation of profiles and cheap IT 8.7 calibration images. The site is a portal for several programmers who work with color software in their "free time".

More profiles for monitors and printers, as well as free software for the creation of profiles, are in development (for years!) and should see the light of day one by one within the next months.

AROS-ML

AROS still alive
There is the rumour abroad that AROS is dead, that there is no further work on the project. Aaron Digulla tells his opinion and gives facts about that:

Date Thu, 2000-05-04 17:40:39 +0200
Subject [AROS-Announce] AROS is *NOT* dead !
Return-Path aros-announce-admin@lists.hepe.com

Someone posted a message to the AROS-User list mentioning that AROS
is dead and that Amiga doesn't do anything, etc (the usual "I'm unhappy
and I want everyone else to be unhappy, too").

Facts:

- AROS is not dead. We are currently working on forming a professional,
payed development team which will work at least part time on AROS.
This should allow us to finish the work much more quickly. I cannot
promise that this will really happen but that will be decided on
Thursday, the 11th of May (next week). I will post here ASA I know
something new.

- I'm in close contact with Amiga and we're bouncing ideas forth
and back how Amiga and AROS could work together or how AROS could
get into a stable legal state. Most of these ideas did turn out to
be unusable and therefore we're not discussing them in the public.
Otherwise, there would be a lot of havoc and disruption.

- I'm also in close contact with OAF. AROS and OAF have separated
again because our mutual goals were no longer compatible. Basically,
OAF wants a version of AROS under GPL which would allow them to
work with FSF and other open source organizations which require this.
His problem ATM is to find out which parts of AROS infringe copyrights,
trademarks and patents and to find out how he can work around these.

AROS itself will try to move closer to Amiga because then we can get
support from them, we can help Amiga companies to make their old
apps work on AROS, we will get legal protection from Amiga, etc.

I cannot say if either attempt has an advantage over the other. All I
can say is that both make sense and since it's not clear which is
better, both should be tried. May the better win :-)

Small Gui for GhostScript
Due to a discussion on the Voyager-mailinglist about APDF and GhostScript (about the complicated usage of GS via Shell and command options or GS-commands) I decided to create a small GUI which solves this problem a bit.

At the moment only the showing and printing of EPS/PS/PDF-files is supported, but i will add the possibility to convert into bitmap-formats and small installing text (usage of GhostScript with webbrowsers - MIME-type support). Of course is this all GNU-GPL freeware.

The third Kickstart Show is nearing and already we have a
fantastic line-up of activities and stands for you.

In addition to the two Amiga A1200 Magic Packs from Amiga Inc (one to bwe
given away in a prize draw for all show goers, the other exclusively for
Kickstart members), a host of hardware from Analogic and Epic and software
from Forematt to give away, we have over 25 stands selling new and second

In our Games Arena, we have multiplayer Quake and Multiplayer Super

Amiga Future interview with YAM author Marcel Beck
On the Amiga Future homepage ("AKTION" area) there is an interview with the author of YAM (German only). Interesting parts are the statement that he will only ever support the platform he is using himself - and that he will be waiting for the AmigaNG to be actually available before deciding what to think of it.

Meaning, if it's interesting enough for him we might be lucky to see a YAM NG... ;-) (mb)

StarGate becomes Freeware
With much considerations I have decided to release StarGate as freeware to the Amiga community. The latest version v2.5 contains bug fixes and minor features. Additional features have not yet been implemented and may not be in the future.

StarGate is premier email and news client for the Amiga. It requires MUI v3.6 and greater.

Please goto http://www.toysoft-dev.com (title link) for the download. You will required to download the v2.1 archive first.

GoldED

GoldED Studio Service Pack 16 available
For registered users of GoldED Studio the Service Pack 16 is available for download. Also available is a completely reworked Webworld plug-in. The HTML editor was expanded by countless very useful functions.

I was of course especially interested in the new Webworld plug-in. It is very intuitively, and proved to be an excellent and unique help in creating the HTML pages for amiga-news.de after only a few minutes. Even the "old" Webworld plug-in was fine, but the new one is much better yet! If I had to give it a grade, it would be an "A+" :-). A must-have for web workers! (ps)

CS&E: Biggest Free Amiga games magazine
CS&E announces another big and free (!) Amiga game magazine named A1200!. Read the announcement:

From: "CS&E" csande@csande.com
To: amiga-news.de team@amiga-news.de
Subject: Biggest Free Amiga games magazine
Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 15:05:19 +0100

Following on from CS&E's successful takeover of Amiga Survivor magazine, I
am pleased to announce that A1200! magazine has not disappeared completely!
Obviously people who have paid good money for our new magazine will now get
Amiga Survivor, but every month CS&E will, in addition, produce A1200!
magazine which will be sent out free to anyone that requests it (you can
e-mail interactive@csande.com). Without an audited figure some companies
may feel they can get away with the equivalent of me saying we print 500,000
copies so whilst in fact the actual print figure will be around the 15,000
mark I will invest in an audited free circulation figure so legitimate
companies can advertise with a legitimate audience. A1200! magazine is
already confirmed as the biggest selling Amiga magazine in the UK due to our
mailing list. Don't go with a poor imitation :)

Kind Regards,

David Connolly
Managing Director

Alive Mediasoft: Big Change
Due to the british print magazine "Amiga Format" folding, there is now a vacancy which Alive Mediasoft intends to fill with their magazine "The Pulse". Read the complete press release with all details:

From: Steven Flowers steve@alive-mediasoft.co.uk
To: Amiga News team@amiga-news.de

Subject: BIG Change

Hello Amiga Friends,

BYE-BYE AMIGA FORMAT

With the fall of Amiga Format in the UK a lot of Amiga users around the
world are left with nothing to read, and a lot of UK companies with nowhere
to advertise. If I'm not mistaken, even Amiga Active appears to have
limited it's games support with NO game reviews this issue.
So, Alive are doing something about it....

The Pulse - the publication with more new game reviews than any other Amiga
magazine is undergoing some changes....

ALIVE DROPS HARDWARE & SERIOUS SOFTWARE

From May the 1st, Alive mediasoft (the publisher of The Pulse)
has dropped all
Amiga Hardware and Serious Software. They are dedicating their time to
expanding their already unbeaten games software. Some of the smaller, more
common utilities will still be available as well as mice and joysticks as
always, but the decision to drop the serious software and hardware opens
the doors for other Amiga conpanies to advertise their products in The
Pulse.

THE PULSE TO CARRY ADVERTS

From issue 13 onwards, for a very small cost, Amiga software & harware
companies can now advertise to 5,000 Amiga owners!

READERSHIP DOUBLES

 - yes that's right, because of the advertising already taken out, they have
been able to increase the monthly publication to a massive 5000 issues!
Unfortunately, even though they've now doubled the readership, there will
still be some disappointed Amiga owners as The Pulse is a FREE publication
so there must be a limit on the number sent out.

News of the available advertising space went out just seven days ago, and
interest has been so good that Alive have decided to add a further 8 pages
to The Pulse to accomodate without loosing any of the features you've
already come to expect.
They anicipate adding more and more pages over the coming months, but for
now the adverts for issue 13 are:-

Epic UK
Eyetech Group Ltd.
Digital Dreams
Abel Gratis
Marvel Comic (for Amiga X-Men)
Titan Computers

ALIVE GUARANTEE MORE GAME REVIEWS THAN ANYONE ELSE

Not only have Alive added another 8 pages and now a glossy colour front
cover, but they also give you a guarantee that The Pulse will carry more
game reviews and more exclusive reviews than any other Amiga magazine out
there.

BRAND NEW COVER DISKS FOR THE PULSE

The final peice in the puzzle has not been fitted with the introduction of
cover disks for every issue of The Pulse.
Subscription to The Pulse magazine will remain completely FREE and available
with FREE POSTAGE to anywhere in the world.
You can now also subscribe to The Pulse CD (P-CD), or The Pulse Cover Disk
(P-FD) for a very small fee to cover costs:-

*One-off copies will cost:*

(Cover CD) P-CD: £3 per issue
(Cover Disk) P-FD: £1.50 per issue

*Special offer for 4 month subscription:*

(Cover CD) P-CD: £10
(Cover Disk) P-FD: £5

*The Pulse Floppys on Issue 1:-*
As a special introduction to the new cover disks, the very first month will
feature Alive mediasoft's critically acclaimed RPG game "BLADE".
The floppy disk version will normally be 2 disks per issue. However, issue
one will come with FOUR floppy disks to accomodate all of Blade.

*The Pulse CD on Issue 1:*-
Quite simply a brilliant CD containing The full version of BLADE - CD
edition.
This includes the complete game as well as the full source code.
And for all those of you who can't wiat for Alive's conversion of Elite 3,
the cover CD will contain some brilliant new updates for Elite 2 with all
sorts of new ships etc.
There's also the exclusive preview tralier of Phantasmagoria and a fully
playable demo of Heretic 2. There's a brand new demo of Descent 2 PPC
Warp 3D and a demo of the X-Men for Quake

Every month the CD will be jam-packed with 650mb of full games, demos, game
updates and some great serious software.

HARDWARE AND SERIOUS SOFTWARE REVIEWS

The Pulse is primarily a games magazine, but does have four pages dedicated
to serious software and Amiga hardware, so there's something of interest for
every type of Amiga user.

Because of the new advertising and the more magazine-like feel to The Pulse,
Alive have promised to tone down the controversy (especially Steven's Final
Word!). Sorry to all the readers who enjoyed this, but it's not to
everyone's liking apparantly.

CONTENTS OF ISSUE 13 - OUT END MAY:-

*Special Features*
Mame Arcade Emulator
Interview with Hyperion

*PREVIEWS*
Sin
Maim & Mangle
Explorer 2260
Dafel Bloodline

*REVIEWS*

/and so much more/...

For those of you who are new to The Pulse, it's a FREE publication available
to Amiga users all over the world.
It consists of 40 A5 pages profesionally printed in black and white with a
colour cover. 12 of the pages detail Alive mediasofts range of software,
the rest is dedicated to the best reveiws, previews and news of everything
Amiga related.
This is NOT Amiga Format - it's FREE!

There are still a few copies of issue 12 left, so if you would like one
E-Mail thepulse@alive-mediasoft.co.uk
but more importantly to subscribe to The Pulse from issue 13 then
E-Mail thepulse@alive-mediasoft.co.uk

The Pulse Magazine - TOTALLY FREE!
The Pulse Mag and CD - £3 per issue or £10 for 4 issues
The Pulse Mag and Floppy Disks - £1.50 per issue or £5 for 4 issues

Subscription through the site is not available for now as we are updating
the site, but should be up again by the end of next week.

OH YEAH, Guess I should apologise for the big email, but I had a lot to say!

Kind regards

I just read issue 18/00 of the Swiss media magazine TELE, and on page 33 I found two articles: "Comeback of the Amiga?" and "No April Fool's joke". They come with a picture labeled: "It's biggest advantage was it never crashed."

Never say never. ;-) (ps)

AminetGUI / Some private notes
Because I have to do my military service starting on May 1st, 2000, I can only reply to questions in the forum or by mail on weekends only. Moreover, work on the Aminet-GUI will be sparse. But here is a promise: The Aminet-GUI won't be closed. If it is possible, I will continue with updates.

If somebody is interested in working as co-webmaster, please contact me. Right now is this GUI a one-man effort. Alexander Kurtz, webmaster of Aminet.de.

Sharks! CD32 edition finished
"SHARKS! CD32 Edition" is finished, and will be shipped starting today. The game can be easily ordered from me by e-mail.

"SHARKS! CD32 edition" also runs on AMIGAs with min. OS2.04, 2 MB RAM and CD-ROM. With a CD32 emulation, the CD soundtrack is working, too! More details on my homepage under "PROJEKTE".

AFD-Copyright News
It's time again for some news on the project "Standard Amiga FD-Software Copyright Note" (TM) or, for short, "AFD-COPYRIGHT" (TM). This copyright note is an offer to all Amiga developers wanting to release FD-Software, be it freeware, giftware, shareware or whatever.

AFD-COPYRIGHT is now available in sixteen (16!!!) languages - in two formats each, plain text and HTML file. The latest addition is a Catalan translation by Llorenç Grau from the ATO. The files can now be downloaded from the official support site for AFD-COPYRIGHT. The URL is http://www.dknoll.myokay.net/AFD/ (title link).

The forwarding URL (http://AFD.home.pages.de/) is currently not available, because home.pages.de is offline since April 28th. I recommend the home.pages.de adress for homepage links nevertheless, because it will probably remain valid for some time to come.
