Trevor Dickinson

Trevor Dickinson on: A1222+/Enhancer V2.x/From Vultures to Vampires Vol 2
In response to our inquiry, Trevor Dickinson (A-EON) provided a brief summary of the current status of some projects:
  • A1222plus motherboard

    • Hardware works as expected, including network and audio
    • DVD drive support still problematic at the moment
    • Board now can boot Workbench
    • Performance like the original beta board: all popular software (e.g. Odyssey and IBrowse, but also the latest DVDPlayer version) as well as A-EON's 2D and 3D graphics drivers including the latest Enhancer 2.1 release are supported.
    • The A1222+ uses the latest uboot firmware written by Mark Olsen, which provides additional variables such as reduction in the number of Boing Ball animation and generally faster boot time.
    • production start and planned availability not set yet: currently preparing early adopter production depending on component availability

  • Enhancer Software V54

    • further updates are in progress after the release of version 2.1 (e.g. integration of AmiSSL 4.11, improved Warp2D library). The 14th alpha build of V54 was released to beta testers on January 4. Release in the course of the year
    • Two installation variants possible:
      • over the existing OS4 installation (similar to current version 2.1)
      • on a separate Enhancer partition, from which can be booted by default (the OS4 installation CD is required once for this purpose). It is unclear which components are used or copied temporarily or permanently.

  • LibreOffice

    • Trevor speaks of "a long and expensive journey which I am hoping is coming to a satisfactory conclusion".
    • record a video of Libre Office in action planned.
    • Soon: widen the beta test programme to accelerate the the first release.

  • From Vultures to Vampires, volume 2

    • at the moment Kickstarter campaign for financing the second volume until 24. Januar 2022
      • Initiated by David John Pleasance, who also focuses on all administration, including contacting printers
      • Trevor Dickinson is not involved in the Kickstarter campaign and is not accepting any funds from the Kickstarter campaign or future book sales. He is 3/4 finished writing volume 2
      • covering the years 2005 to 2021
      • currently about 6.400 Euro are given from required 18.000
      • E-Books available from the end of February
      • with signature if desiredr
      • ubsidizing shipping costs for buyers outside GB

AmigaOS 4: 'Lite XL' editor 1.16.12.7
At the end of last year, George Sokianos had announced with the release of version v1.16.12.3 that he had started porting the editor 'Lite XL', which originates from the Linux world (amiga-news.de reported). Yesterday he released the for the time being last update to v1.16.12.7 for this version branch and writes the following about it:

"Today I did the last release of Lite XL for AmigaOS 4.1. Don't worry, I am not stopping working on this fine editor. On the contrary. I will stop working on the v1.16.12 source branch so to focus on the latest available version.

The last few days I managed to port Lua 5.3 and Lua 5.4, as well as the PCRE2. Although the newer versions of Lua are not necessary yet, the PCRE2 is one of the mandatory libraries needed. All of them are highly experimental, and not tested thoroughly, but I am happy I managed to finish them.

In the new v1.16.12.7 release, which is already available to be downloaded from my Git repository and OS4Depot, I did a few changes that might help with the SDL to use the Gfx Card in a better way, which will increase the overall speed. Also, I included a few plugins and colour schemas that are tested and working fine with this version, in case you would like to add some extra features or make it look better for you.

I updated the README_OS4 file where you can find more information about all these additions, how to use them and a couple of tips 'n tricks that might help you.

I hope it will keep you occupied until the next major release, which is going to be epic.

If you want to track the progress of Lite XL v2 development, you can always check https://git.walkero.gr/walkero/lite-xl/issues/12 or make sure to watch this page, since I am going to update you frequently.

Finally, I would like to thank you once more for your generous support. The motivation I get from you all is inexpressible." (dr)

RTG driver: P96 V3.2.2 released
Jens Schönfeld (individual Computers) wrote:
"The RTG driver P96 enjoys growing popularity: More then 40 paid downloads (more than a third of them for the full price or more) during the weeks since version V3.2.0 has been published, have taken us over the threshold of 30% cost coverage since we've taken ownership of the software in 2016. We'd like to send a big thank-you to the Amiga community for strong support and detailed bug reports in our support forum, which help us improve the software on a regular basis." Changes:
  • Version 3.2.2 attempts one more time to deal with broken software: If a program like Descent opens a planar screen mode, but combines it with chunky rendering routines, the new version 3.2.2 can display a correct picture despite this evident software error.
  • Sprite colours are now switched if the sprite travels from one screen to another in a split-screen environment. This fixes the colour of the mouse pointer during screen dragging.
  • masked blitting of planar bitmaps has been fixed: This fixes the "Palette"-preferences program.
  • If a split-screen (dragged screen) is used on a PIV-card, the video-window will not be disabled, but will pan together with the front screen. Note that P96 currently does not support video or memory windows on the back screen.

Vertical shooter: Amiga port of 'Knightmare' released (update)
The musician, DJ and developer 'Hoffman' had released the final version of his amiga version of the game 'Metal Gear' last year (amiga-news.de reported). Also originally written for the MSX and published by Konami was the vertically scrolling shooter Knightmare, of which he released his amiga port today (official video). He wrote:

The action takes place in the form of a top-down vertical scrolling shoot’em up style including various power-ups along the way".

The Amiga port contains the follow features:
  • Original game fully disassembled to ensure accurate gameplay

Sokoban clone: Astro Blox Revisited downloadable for free
Astro Blox Revisited, a variant of Sokoban and basically a 'deluxe' edition of Robert Szacki's Astro Blox, had been released in 2020 at the Polish retro event Decrunch 2020 as a demo version (amiga-news.de reported), which still had - according to the developer - a lot of errors and was impossible to pass. Later commercial distribution as a boxed edition followed.

Since yesterday now also the full version is available for free download at the title link. System requirements are 512 KB of RAM. The game was written by Paweł 'Juen' Nowak, graphics and music are from Zbigniew 'PPILL' Pożoga and Jakub 'Aceman' Szeląg, respectively. (snx)

PDF manual: 'ROM Kernel Reference Manual' for AmigaOS 3.2
The 'ROM Kernel Reference Manual' for AmigaOS 3.2, written by Camilla Boemann and Jason Stead, is updated continuously and is oriented to the 'Amiga ROM Kernel Reference Manuals' from the 80s written by Robert Peck.

This book aims to represent all programming topics of the Amiga operating system since release 2 up to 3.2. The challenge is to cover features that are 30 years old as well as things that would only be added in the last few years. The authors write the following about this:

"This book is initially published as a PDF as it is more important to get the information out quickly than for it to be complete. Over time it will be improved and more information will be added. Thus initially you may find several topics lacking, but please keep an eye out for updates. This book is meant to help you expand your knowledge of programming the Amiga. It assumes you have previous experience with programming the Amiga, and it all but assumes you have all the books in the Amiga ROM Kernel Reference Manual series. Like the books in that series a knowledge of the C programming language is not required, but will make it much easier to understand the material in this book." (dr)

Philosophy: The Amiga as "a computer built to last 50 years"
In early 2021, engineer, writer and lecturer at the École Polytechnique de Louvain, Lionel Dricot, wrote an essay titled 'The computer built to last 50 years' in which he ponders how a long-lasting computer could be developed to save both one's finances, but also resources, and thus the planet.

Carl Svensson, well-known our readers by his ARexx-Tools 'RxEnv', Carl Svensson has now written a rebuttal: 'The Amiga as "a computer built to last 50 years"'. In it, he claims that the '50-year-old computer' already exists - in various forms and designs - and that we just need to find it in attics and restore it: the Amiga.

A computer that has been in use for around 30 years would literally stand for sustainability. Its longevity makes up for what it lacks in energy efficiency. (dr)

AmiTube 0.7: YouTube client for 68k-Amigas (update)
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's AmiTube enables watching YouTube videos on an 68k Amiga. To do so, they are converted to Commodore's CDXL format and downloaded (video).

Now version 0.7 is available which among others allows you to download the original video from YouTube in different resolutions or as audio file. Detailed changes:
  • New CDXL Option 320px and AGA colors
  • direct download from youtube without conversation
  • select resolution on direct download
  • Update checking
  • Download latest version
  • Question before delete movie
The latest version always is available on the AmiTube website.

Please not that conversion is executed on the developer's personal server, thus he asks to restrict oneself to few and short videos. Furthermore the program must not be shared but always be downloaded from the author's website at the title link.

Update: (09.01.2022, 06:39, dr)

In his new blog entry, yesterday Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow pointed out that an (untested) guide published on the official AmiTube website now describes how to set up your own 'converter server'. (dr)
