Database: SN-MünzArchiv V1.01
Steffen Nitz has released version 1.01 of his coin management software "SN-MünzArchiv" on Aminet. This program is suitable for all popular coins (e.g. Euro, DM, GDR, investment ounces etc.). He writes about this:

On the Ami-Force page of CJ-Stroker a survey has now gone online to find out which collectors databases you'd like to have. Please participate lively - even those not interested at all, so I can get a relatively correct impression.

Planned features for version 1.1:
  • A sales window, to get an overview of which coins have been sold (with statistics).
  • Introduction of a year number statistic.
The following changes have been incorporated into the current version:

Version 1.0
  • Instructions are now available.
  • A parts list window for each quality type has been added.
  • It is now possible to search for entries.
  • A new statistics type (enumeration) has been added.
  • In list processing the lists can now be sorted and entries deleted.
  • On startup via CLI a data record can be passed which is then loaded automatically. Thus it is possible to start the program by double-clicking a data record. It is also possible to enter a data record in the settings which is to be loaded upon startup of SN-MünzArchiv.
  • Entries can be exported and appended.
  • Lists can be printed.
  • Upon saving of a database, a backup (.bak) is now created.
Version 1.01
  • It is again possible to enter records into the lists without having to press the sort button.
It may not have escaped your attention that some features had already been in V0.8. I had made the mistake of doing 2-3 uploads with this version number which is why I list all changes from after the first upload.

Source code of the render.library released
Tim S. Müller has released the source code of the render.library version 31.0. Changes since version 30.0:
  • Simplified the over-complex quantization algorithm. The new algorithm leads to similar results, with much better performance.
  • Semaphores are (finally!) correctly initialized to zero.
  • Minor cleanup.
Download: renderlib_src.lha - readme - history

What kind of library is the render.library?
  • render.library is an Amiga shared library that serves an image processing kernel.
  • render.library is an interface between planar, truecolor and chunky graphics, plus it supports all Amiga specific pixel and color schemes.
  • render.library provides palette management, histograms, alpha channel processing, color reduction, rendering, dithering, scaling, texture mapping, and lots of conversion functions.
  • render.library is built on a distinct architecture of functional classes, which allows e.g. texture mapping and rendering in a single pass, without the need to allocate intermediate buffers.
  • render.library is fast.
  • render.library comes with autodocs and tutorials, and is freeware for freeware and shareware applications.

Amithlon: release date of v2.0 postponed
The release date of the already by some Amiga dealers announced Amithlon v2.0 will probably be postponed. Bernd Meyer wrote on the Amithlon ml that the unfortunate connection with Haage & Partner in the past had made him once more trouble on the way to the release of Amithlon. That's why Bernd doesn't believe that the originally planned released date can be kept up. But he hopes that the delay won't take too long.

akJFIF/PNG/TIFF 45.1 now freeware and Amithlon-optimized
Starting with V45.1 (29.6.02), the datatypes akJFIF/PNG/TIFF are Freeware. The keyfile code and some other legacy stuff has been removed. This also may speed things up, since there are less special cases to be covered.

Furthermore, a couple of different optimizations in the 68k code have been made, some bugs were fixed and some amithlon/uae- specific optimizations have been made.

Download links: These datatypes now are specifically targeted to high-end 68k machines and their emulated counterparts. (ps)

Tales of Tamar

T.o.T.: Amiga-Version 0.43 R13 - Final version will come soon
Version 0.43 R13 is the last but one beta version up to the Tales of Tamar Amiga Basis-Set! Tales of Tamar is an Internet based round game for Amiga, Atari, Linux and PC by Eternity Entertainment Software. There are only a few days to come until Eternity will accept advance orders for the Amiga basis set! Tales of Tamar will be delivered in a nice shaped Euro box with a 64 sites long documentation and three CDs. Should you have questions concerning the online costs or the game playing then please write an email to eternity@pride.de.

Since the last version a lot of older bugs have been fixed. Besides this the soundtrack of ToT has been added which is certainly a highlight. Because of that a very great thanks to the musician Markus Holler!

Additionally to the soundtrack the texts of research have been added and string-input-boxes created. Because of that it is now possible to change the values of the figures boxes via arrow but as well as via keyboard. This applies for the granary, the trade screen, the barrack and the diplomacy.

Meanwhile the wars on Tamar become more intensive. Please read the chronicle to get a survey.

If you are fond of game of roles and games of strategy you should not pass this game! The testers have played this game for two years and are still enthusiastic. This game will revolutionize the world of PBEM-games (PBEM = PlayByEMail). (ps) (Translation: dr)

ANN: Alan Redhouse clarifies coupon promotion
Eyetech speak up about the coupon promotion. I leave it up to you to draw your own conclusions. "No this is not our promotion - and Bill will post the clarification details later. But we are shipping A1 boards + OS4-OEM to dealers (inc Amiga Inc.) and that plus complete systems ourselves.

It is likely that you will probably be able to cash your voucher direct with dealers - but it is down to Amiga Inc. to give out the details of how this will work. The main issue - as so many people have pointed out - is how to avoid the banks becoming the main beneficiaries of what was a well intentioned user support program (we pay euros15 ~USD15 on every receipt transaction for example).

Also the law is somewhat different in te US. In Europe you cannot (past Amiga-related companies excepted!) legally take money off consumers for a product that isn't yet on general availability. And, to me, $50 seeems an awful lot to charge for a T-shirt, with an non-legally enforcable right to an equivalent reduction on an AmigaOne. You will of course (somehow) get the $50 off - this is just really a problem of how consumer legislation is inconsistent - and bank charges are inevitable - across the Global Economy.

That may also go some way to explain why it is Amiga Inc. who receive the money and not us or Hyperion. Just a few facts to confuse the debate,
Alan" (ps)

BlitzBasic

Programming Language: BlitzBasic (PC) Version 1.76
The BlitzBASIC update to version 1.76 has appeared. There are some bugfixes and a very interesting new texture flag 256. This makes it possible to draw textures much more quickly "on the fly" than was possible with normal texture flags up until now.

Additionally practical tests can now be performed that function perfectly, even with ScaleMesh() and multitexturing! (ps) (Translation: dm)

Albrecht Kinzkofer (E-Mail)

Hot: Hard Times for Internet Businesses (Update)
Yesterday Albrecht Kinzhofer brought the above article to our attention. In the article it is described that the Frankfurt credit card service provider EuroCard Systems made a contract with one customer, who does Web shipments. The reason is that there were too many dishonest customers.

Kinzhofer fears that this new development could affect many Amiga dealers, who only have the ability to pay COD, where the costs are usually bundled in with the price the customer pays.

We want to inquire of Amiga dealers, software houses and others, if they have had similarly bad experiences and what consequences have arisen from that.

Update:
In the comments section on the German side there have been many interesting points of view and other bits of information. (ps) (Translation: dm)

AmigaOS XL: Experiences with the H&P Big Tower 1800+ (V 1.27)
In my report, I describe the experiences I have made with the Big-Tower. Version 1.27 of the report contains several additions in the chapters "AmigaXL", "QNX" and "Software". The software table has been optically improved. Furthermore, I have a little goody for my loyal readers. But I won't tell more here.

Note: Amiga-Voyager shows only ads instead of the pictures. Therefore, I still recommend to use AWeb or disable background images in Amiga-Voyager. A move to a better server is to come after my vacation. But at that time, amiga-news.de will be on vacation. I hope that someone has written a report about Amithlon 2.0 until then. ;-) (ps)

Amiga Future: Poll - "What OS do you prefer on the Pegasos?"
Today a new poll (in German) was started on the Amiga Future homepage: "What OS do you prefer on the Pegasos?" Additionally, the results of the last poll have been published in the interactive area.

Note: English speakers can probably handle this with these short instructions:
  1. go to page linked at title of this article
  2. click on the word "interactive" on that page
  3. make your selection in the yellow box on the next page
  4. click "abstimmen" to vote.

Good luck! -DM (ps) (Translation: dm)

ScummVM: Trouble with the law
Users of MorphOS- and AmigaOS versions of the GPL engine ScummVM for playing LucasArts adventures are maybe interested in this: The ScummVM-Team was forced by LucasArts to shut down the site to July, 1st, because of viloation of rights upon the SPU engine.

The eMail from LucasArts and the answer of the project leader of ScummVM, James Brown, is published on the ScummVM developers list (title link).

The arguments in the answer are dealing with an error (maybe LucasArts thought it was "Abandonware" presented for download). Because ScummVM was disassenbled out of LucasArts program code, it is maybe possible that it is illegal in the USA, as a violation of the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). But this is just guesswork of someone. We have to wait for an answer of LucasArts. (ps) (Translation: gf)

SixK Port: Reaction Mysql Client 0.2
Comment from SixK: Here is an early alpha release of RMC. This MySql client is actually the same as the Mui Mysql Client. I have put on my old site: sixk.maniasys.com except it has been written with reaction and is far more stable. Current limitations are only select work, (insert and update untested, but may crash) and only 10000 cells are permitted and only 10 columns.

I hope to progress a bit more faster than with MUI since I didn't have to care with hooks anymore ;) (ps) (Translation: gf)

Amiga Inc.: New Executive Update from 23rd June 2002

A Message to the Community
Bill McEwen - June 23, 2002

A message to the Amiga Community, Present Past and Future:

I would first like to thank all of you who expressed your concern and shared your support for Gary Peake and his family when you learned of his heart attack. I can now share with you that Gary is looking forward to returning to work in the next couple of weeks. He, of course, was trying to send e-mail from the hospital (at one point, he thought that the beeping of a heart monitor was the logon sounds of a modem), but fortunately with his hands and legs restrained, as well as some very effective tranquilizers, they were able to keep him from the computer. Having said that, I wanted to personally thank each of you on behalf of Gary and his family for your kind words and support.

This is an amazing time for Amiga, and the Community. You have all been patient, more than understanding, and have dealt with more misinformation, disinformation and rumors than any one group of people should, ever. Yet, and happily, we are moving forward and gaining momentum. Admittedly, we have not been very public about many of our plans and activities, to date, but they are many and we are pleased to be bringing this news to you, The Community, as well.

One request: If you find this information as positive as we do, share it with someone. Call or e-mail your friends, Amigans who are interested but might not be following the news as closely as you and let them know that change is in the wind: that new, interesting, and most importantly: REAL opportunities will soon be here for all of us in the Amiga Community.

We all see and hear hype everyday. We know it well, sometimes quite instinctively. What you are to read is not hype. These are true and sustainable facts. Reality. The real skinny. We could not sustain and maintain the hard work and dedication of the members of the Amiga Family, those people whom are working so hard to bring you real products, if there were not real opportunities for us to make a real difference and a real change for the better.

Did you notice the incessant use of the word "Real"? Good. Because what this Update is telling you is real.

Quite frankly, I enjoy the almost daily updates showing where you can find Amigas today at work and play. I find it so exciting, and yes, rewarding, to learn how some are using Amithlon to bring Amigas back into usage, in places where they have not been in some time. I see new sales, a new sense of opportunity and a new spirit emerging. A spirit that challenges conventional thought and challenges us at Amiga everyday. We are here because of you. Your desire for new Amiga products, your desire that this platform, this valid, vital and pioneering computing concept should not be swept aside has fueled our desire to succeed and grow. We have survived when so many others have failed, because of you, The Amiga Community and the way you have challenged us to "deliver the goods". Because of that challenge, we owe these exciting opportunities, this "Delivering The Future" to you.

Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get started. We have a lot of news to share with you:

Amiga Party Pack purchasers? This is for you!

Each of you received your Party Pack and in the very near future you will be able to use the discounts that are associated with your Party Pack purchase. Each of you will receive an e-mail explaining your options, and the process is simple:

1. You may purchase the products directly from Amiga at the discounted price and the products will be shipped to your door.

or

2. Once you have purchased either the AmigaOne with OS 4.0, or if you purchase just OS 4.0, send us a copy of the receipt along with the front page of your SDK manual and Amiga will send you back a check for $100.00!

or

3. Let us know the retailer that you will be using and we will get them the $100.00 so you do not need to worry about it.

Not a bad deal at all. Each of you have had the chance to work with AmigaDE and many of you have become developers of Amiga Anywhere content, because of the party pack. Now soon you will be able to get $100.00 back when you purchase a new AmigaOne system. AmigaOne and Amiga OS 4.0 ? Update

We were more than impressed with the response to the AmigaOS 4.0 screen shots and the live demonstration of the AmigaOne boards. We sometimes have trouble understanding how so many people, people interested in the Amiga platform and the progress we are making in bringing it back to market can stay hidden for so long. However, the facts are that we must make certain production decisions based on projected product sales volumes, and how quickly we can receive a return on investment. That's Business 101. So, one of the challenges for us is we decide on a number of units to build and then we see, from web hits and direct inquiries, that there are 5 times as many people who are interested in the AmigaOne than we knew were out there. You can file that under "Beyond Our Expectations".

AmigaOS 4.0 is going to include many of the features that were originally planned for later versions of the desktop AmigaOS. With the need to rewrite certain portions of the code, the Hyperion team has decided to go ahead and fold in a great many more of the features that they were planned for OS 4.1 and OS 4.2 into OS 4.0. Ben Hermans and the team have been doing a great job of keeping us up to date with screen shots, updated product features and current development roadmaps. I know that we will have more updates, regarding real development and feature details from Ben and Hyperion very soon, and trust me when I say that we are chomping at the bit to share these details with The Community. Right now, according to our last conference call with the AmigaOS 4.0 team, at Hyperion, we can see the exceptional progress and the feature set that is being included with this release is fantastic. This has been driven by you the Amiga community, and I know that you will all be very happy.

AmigaOne boards are in the hands of the AmigaOne developers and the integration work is moving ahead quickly, but with the full realization that rushing the release to the public will afford no one any real benefits. Alan and his team at Eyetech has done a great job of "keeping their eyes on the prize". We are really pleased that the hardware is out there, and that the Amiga community is going to have the first new hardware designed for them, with their own operating system, in a long, long time.

These are real Amiga products from Amiga and their associated partner companies. Yes, it has taken longer than any of us had predicted. We too have shared your anticipation and yes, impatience, but some things can only be done one way: The Right Way. Having said that, we know that with the results that we are seeing, I believe that you will share this with your friends and other members of the Amiga family with us.

The Amiga Community will soon have a brand new platform. You will soon begin working with the most sophisticated Amiga Operating System yet developed. There is great care and attention being paid to Getting It Right, with the features and benefits that you have told us that you, The Community, want in a new Amiga. However there is a considerable challenge that goes along with all of these activities and we are going to need your help in helping us make a determination regarding certain business decisions that will be made quite clear further on in this update.

Amiga Anywhere/AmigaDE ? Why are there two?

There needs to be some clarification of these two products: Amiga Anywhere is a subset of the complete AmigaDE. In speaking with customers and potential partners we learned that they were looking for the content, and not the complete DE for their environments. The idea was to have as minimal a build as possible for these devices. So Amiga created the Amiga Anywhere Content Engine. This is a series of lightweight products that offer the binary portable attributes of the complete DE, while delivering the features and products in a much smaller form factor. Development is continuing at a rapid pace with these products and we currently offer an Amiga Anywhere Content Engine for PocketPC, and Pocket PC Phone edition devices, and shortly for Smartphone, Embedded Linux, and Symbian devices. This will allow AACE content to run on all of these various products and devices opening up even wider audience to which we can introduce Amiga.

Development is moving ahead quite well on both the complete DE and AACE, and you will see some new partner announcements in the very near future. These are customers who are going to deploy AACE and the associated content in a variety of interesting products.

There is presently one other question about the current Amiga Entertainment Pack for Pocket PC devices, and why there is limited content for it. This is because we were creating a game console type of experience with this first release, and that it was designed to be closed. The idea was to pop the card into the device and begin playing a game, without taking the resources from the relatively limited memory in the device.

There will be an exciting promotion/contest that we will be announcing later in the week with regards to AACE and the Entertainment Packs. We assure you, this will be a great deal of fun, and we look forward to introducing Amiga to several new customers who are currently using PocketPC and PocketPC Phone Edition devices.

Amithlon Update ? Yes there is an update! (Cue Trumpets!)

We are very pleased to announce that we have entered into contracts, and yes they are signed, with Bernd Meyer, regarding Amithlon. In fact we have been testing a new version in-house for several weeks now, and this is a great product. As you may remember I was the first person to show Amithlon to the public, at the AmiWest 2001 Show, and the reaction was simply amazing from the people there. Since then, we are seeing deployment of Amithlon in many new places where Amiga’s once roamed and seeing new life for Amiga, with Amithlon. Please know that we have been working with Bernd for several months so far, and we see Amithlon as a great product with a long, robust future for both Amiga and Bernd. You can see the press release here.

The Challenge and the Opportunity!

Now before the naysayers out there begin complaining about this and start making rude noises, I want to explain the very real situation before us: Let it be known now that Amiga does not make money on the following. In fact we will lose money, just as we did on the party packs. However it allowed us to show to our board and our investors that we should pursue building a new Amiga computer. Now we are at that same crossroads again, but in a way that is more complex.

How many AmigaOne's do we build and order?

We need to properly plan, budget, and order for the production of the AmigaOne. To do that, we need to get a good idea of how many units we need to order, build and prepare to support etc. You get the idea.

There are those who tell us to plan for 2,500 to 3,500 units. However over 50,000 people downloaded the OS 4.0 screenshots. These were not 50,000 hits, these were 50,000 different people. Then you have others who tell me that we are looking at 10,000 units to prepare for. This is great because there are certain economies of scale, economies that benefit everyone, that come into play at 10,000 units. You have all seen how chip prices work: once you are able to order 10,000 of the chip prices you are able to receive better pricing, and then, prices start coming down. Everybody benefits.

Then we find that there are currently over 30,000 subscribers to Amiga related magazines. Add to this the fact that we know that there are thousands out there who are quietly watching and waiting to learn more about the release of the AmigaOne before they respond. Then this last week we learned that there was a very large electronics chain in Europe who is interested in carrying the line again if there is enough interest for these new products.

So as you can see, this is a real issue before us:

We do not want to come up short on supply for you, the customers, and yet it is growing quite difficult to judge how many AmigaOnes we should build. You can tell, as we do, that there is a big gap between the numbers and we want to make sure that we have the products ready when you want them, in sufficient numbers, as you should not have to wait. We also do not want to go into a situation of oversupply, either. We thought about putting up a survey, but then we know that there are some who will try and maliciously effect the results and that could, and most likely would, cause us a whole new subset of problems relating to the release of the AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0.

Therefore, we have decided to have some fun with this survey and we sincerely think that we have developed a way for everyone to participate and will give us some real numbers and an ability to better budget and track the real intentions of the community.

So with no small amount of fanfare, here is what we are going to do:

The AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 "Free Stuff" Early Promotion (catchy isn't it):

Here is how it works:

Customers who are interested in purchasing an AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 pre-loaded will be able to purchase a $50.00 off coupon for $50.00! This way we have a very strong idea regarding how many boards we need to produce.

Not enough you say! Okay, how about this: For every $50.00 discount coupon you will receive a free shirt announcing to everyone that you are part of the future. So for $50.00 you get a $50.00 off coupon and a free shirt.

Still not enough? Okay how about this: When we reach 2,500 orders we will have a random drawing for 4 free AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems.

I think that there is more of you out there than that so if we reach 5,000 orders we will give away 10 AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems. That's riiiiight. 10 people who order their discount coupon and get the shirt will get an entire Amiga One/AmigaOS 4.0 system for... Free. That's Free. As in Free. No Cost. A former price, dead on the bottom of its cage. Or something like that.

There are some optimists in the office that believe that there are 10,000 people who are looking to own the first new Amiga system in more years than we can count, so if we have 10,000 orders we will give away 20 AmigaOne/AmigaOS 4.0 systems and 5 Amiga-enabled cell phones!

One last level: If we reach 25,000 orders Amiga will give away 50 Amiga systems, 15 Amiga Cell Phones, and a trip for 2 to either Hawaii or Florida.

OK one more - hit 50,000 orders Amiga will give away 100 systems, 100 Amiga Enabled Cell Phones 3 trips for 2 to either Hawaii or Florida.

Over 50,000 and I will come up with something even better, because at this level we can show the world what you have been telling us for some time, that Amiga is a sleeping giant ready to awaken and take it rightful place - being in the lead.

The Cell phones, and the Amiga systems will be shipped as soon as they are available.

If you do not win in the drawing, you simply take your coupon and wear your shirt into your local Amiga reseller, and you will receive $50.00 off when you purchase your new system. (Amiga resellers: we will be sending you the details on how all of this fun and free stuff is going to work).

Now since we need to be placing the orders in the not-too-distant future, this promotion will run from today until July 7th, with the winners being announced at AmiWest in Sacramento.

Click here to get in on the AmigaOne,/AmigaOS 4.0 "Free Stuff" Early Promotion.

So while I know that there are some people who will make rude noises and fabricate all kinds of specious claims and others will try and use this as a method to attempt driving the community apart even more, I hope that the rest of you, the majority of you, can see where, with this news and this promotion, we can go together. Developers are going to be watching also to see if this is a system that they wish to continue developing for, and others who have left are going to be watching to see if they want to return to development on the Amiga platform. So the stakes are real. But we can face them together and succeed.

AmigaOne and OS 4.0 are the beginning to a new future, and it is real.

To all of you who are thinking of attending AmiWest 2002, in Sacramento CA, please come and join in with all of us who will be attending, as I will be there and it is going to be great fun learning who in the audience may be a winner. It is also one of my real rewards of my job to meet you, the members of The Amiga Community. You also never know what I am going to announce and we could have some real surprises.

Or I just may hang around for the food. :-D

It is time to start having some fun!

Amiga. Isn't it great? (ps)

Bernie Meyer announced Amithlon 2.0 for 1st July 2002 (Update)
Coming to this place on (or around :) July 1st:
A freely downloadable and distributable DEMO version of Amithlon 2.0, which can be unlocked to full functionality via a personalized keyfile.

Please be patient for just a little while longer....
Monday 24 June 2002 04:30:43 ? Bernd Meyer

You can find the following detailed announcement at Moobunny:
Amiga, Inc. and Bernd Meyer announce licensing of Amithlon 2.0.

June 23, 2002 - Snoqualmie, WA and Melbourne, Australia - Amiga, Inc. today announced the cross licensing of Amithlon 2.0. The agreement was made with the author and the inspiration behind Amithlon, Bernd "Bernie" Meyer.

As part of the agreement, Amiga will license Kickstart 3.1 and portions of Amiga OS 3.9 to be distributed as part of Amithlon 2.0. In turn, Amiga will actively promote and license Amithlon 2.0 to OEM customers looking for an Amiga emulator on x86 platforms.

Bill McEwen, Amiga President and CEO, said, "Bernie has been a good friend and partner to Amiga. I first demonstrated a beta version of Amithlon almost a year ago at the Sacramento show. Even then the quality of the product and its potential were obvious to me. Since then it has become a more polished, a clear reflection of the passion and skills that Bernie brings to the table."

I have also been impressed by the moral and ethical integrity that Bernie has displayed as he has partnered with Amiga. Too often in the past we have had to deal with companies who would like nothing better than to split the Amiga community. Bernie has always had the best interests of the community at heart and has created a product that we can all be truly proud of.?

"It is with great pleasure that I finally enter into a deal directly with Amiga", said Bernie Meyer. "This new version, to be distributed with Amiga's seal of approval, provides customers with a clear indication that Amithlon is an actively developed product with great prospects. This partnership will allow users of Classic AmigaOS to use their applications on modern, affordable hardware."

A demo version of Amithlon 2.0 will be available shortly which can be downloaded free of charge from the distribution site at http://www.amithlon.net/demo.shtml. The demo version may be upgraded to a fully functional version with a simple keyfile, which can be purchased online.

About Amithlon 2.0
The goal of the Amithlon project was to make AmigaOS 3.9 run on commodity PC hardware. Unlike other approaches to this problem (UAE, Fellow), Amithlon provides AmigaOS with complete control over the hardware. Hosted on a specially modified linux kernel, Amithlon's CPU emulation runs AmigaOS; All access to graphics, sound, networking and interface hardware is provided through standard AmigaOS drivers. Amithlon 2.0 is distributed as a self-booting CD-ROM image.

About Amiga:
In 1985, Amiga introduced the world to Multimedia with the launch of the incredible Amiga 1000, a revolution in hardware with dedicated audio and graphics chips and a revolution in software with the first 32 bit, fully pre-emptive, multitasking operating system. It then went on to dominate the 1980s and early 1990s, pioneering video and animation and giving rise to many of the top gaming companies of today. That tradition will continue with the launch of the brand new AmigaOne desktop computer and its companion, AmigaOS4.0, destined to set new standards and expectations in the world of digital living. Amiga can be reached on the web at http://www.amiga.com.

About Bernd Meyer:
Bernd Meyer is a freelance software designer with almost 20 years of experience in professional software development. He has studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Germany and Australia, and is currently completing a PhD on Image Modeling at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. In 2000, two of Bernd's hobby projects got out of hand. One turned into Glicbawls, a category winner in the 2000 International Obfuscated C Code Contest, the other into a Just-In-Time compiler for the Amiga emulator UAE, providing it with much greater emulation speed. In 2001, Bernd further refined the JIT Compiler for inclusion in Amithlon.

Meanwhile, an official press release by Amiga Inc. was released. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Amiga Bastringue: Short report by Rose Humphrey (Update)
A first short report about the French Amiga event "Amiga Bastringue" taking place this weekend has been posted on Amiga.org. Rose "anarchic_teapot" Humphrey writes:

"There was food, there was drink (mostly caffeinated), and there was a working AmigaOne running SuSE Linux PPC v7.3
There was Naya Design with their rather fetching perspex ATX towers.
There was Alan Redhouse, who was prevailed upon to make a speech and actually dared to do it in French.
There was a prototype AmigaOne XE motherboard.
We learned that AOS4 has been made to boot on an A1.
There were lots of photos taken, someone is supposed to have filmed the Speech and the ensuing Q&A session, and all of this, I am reliably informed, will be on a publicly-accessible website within 24 hours."

IOSPIRIT: fxSCAN 4.0 feature update and in production
We're proud to announce that fxSCAN 4.0 has been finished and the master was sent out to the CD-ROM production site last Tuesday.

Though we have a very tight timetable for fxSCAN, we managed to finish a MorphOS-native version of the fxSCAN PPC-servertask and the OCR-engine which will ship with fxSCAN 4.0. A native version for AmigaOS® 4.0 is planned, too, and will be available as patch from our homepage at the time of completion.

Furthermore another two new GUI skins ("Burning Red" and "Laced Gray", see fxSCAN-screenshots) and a time-unlimited version of the color calibration software ICS (with printable manuals!) are coming with fxSCAN now, too.

If everything goes fine in production, fxSCAN 4.0 ships on the 15th of July 2002. The special preorder offer ends on the 7th of July. (ps)

Amiga Community - SixK

SixK SDL game ports: SDLInvaders 0.6.0 (Update)
SixK offers at the new website 'Amiga Community' ports of SDL games for download. The SD library allows a platform independent programming of games and other multimedia products.

New at the site is the game SDLInvaders 0.6.0, an Amiga port of the game from Niels Weber. The game works fine with both Amithlon and on Amiga with 68040/33 MHz but the latter seems to be quite slow. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Amiga, Inc. / Partners: Eyetech coments on developer board shipping
Eyetech have posted this update on the status of the developer boards on the AmigaOne mailing list.

Angus (and others)
First, please do not forget that this is a public list and anything published on it gets read by non-A1 enthusiasts, misinterpreted, severely mangled and reposted to the gossip lists almost immediately. This then takes a disproportionate amount of our valuable business time to try to rectify. We (I) have been open in the past and have learnt lessons the hard way!

Secondly anyone who ordered a developer board - dealer or end user - was subscribed to a closed list under NDA. This allows us all on the list to be very open, even democratic, in the way the boards are shipped and packaged. Several people on this list are on the closed a1g3dev list have boards and some - but not all - of them have boards. I certainly have not had any adverse feedback from them either in private or public as to how things are being handled from the dev board perspective.

What I will say is that inevitably some people on the list have far more experience than others when it comes to installing linux. Since the dev group voted to initially standardise on SuSE PPC Linux - and the A1 boards are NOT the same as the Teron CX boards (which run Turbo Linux) - the group decided to let a select few of the real experts to make an easily installable distribution of SuSE Linux PPC and UAE-PPC first.

Given this - and although the remaining dev boards have already been manufactured - it was/is in my view, unfair to ask the remaining, less Linux-centric developers to pay for their dev boards until this SuSE/UAE release is finalised. Progress has been very good and this is expected to take place - without fanfare - shortly.

In parallel with this Hyperion are making good progress with sorting out the OS4 boot process, and the help that they have received form the Linux experts on the A1G3 dev list has been significant.

Oh yes, and the release by Gentle Eye was strictly speaking outside the A1G3dev list NDA, and I will be having a word with them about this today.

Cheers, Alan (ps) (Translation: gf)

Programming Language: PowerD V0.19 alpha7
On 16th June 2002, Martin Kuchinka published version 0.19 alpha 7 of his programming language "PowerD". This version contains an number of bugfixes. A debugger has been added. The following changes have come into effect since the previous version:

  • added a ddbg tool to debug Your sources
  • fixed assembler error when EXCEPTDO without Raise() occured in ppc code generator
  • fixed eight enforcer hits
  • when compiling a library, the library is placed in source's directory
  • a bit fixed line statement in error reporting
  • prohibited JUMPing to another procedure
  • renumbered warnings, now starts with 900
  • fixed IF <constant> for ppc
  • fixed some structure scanning, added new error messages
  • debug file do at last support (not yet finished) debugger :)
  • END do now check, if allocation (NEW) was successful
  • added error message, when SUB is called and not found
  • fixed [~CONST]:x (CONSTants with single operators in lists)
  • and much much more

This publication is a very early alpha version. Please send references to errors, suggestions and ideas to kuchinka@volny.cz.

The compiler runs from AmigaOS V3.0, CPU 68EC020, 4MB RAM and 3-4 MB free space on the hard disk. The compiler itself doesn't require an FPU. The generated programs, however, will require an FPU if they use floats. The PPC binaries run with powerpc.library.

Apart from the compiler, "phxass" and "phxlnk" will be needed for generating 68K code, as well as "pasm" and "vlink" for PPC code. These programs can be found on the homepage of Frank Wille.

  • New entry: Rock'n Roll

20 more entries are being prepared. But we want to fill the entries with more life in the future.

So, in the future there will be more "updates" of existing entries than really new ones, but for that there might be more interesting information about the particular games and applications.

A.D.A.: Demo archive updated - new sort functions and much more
The Amiga Demoscene Archive (A.D.A.) has been updated. Here is the complete text containing all the changes:

Update with 6 new productions, including 5 party winners: Repugnance/Powerline (1st at Icing 97), Jesus was a demomaker/Ramses (1st at Euskal 6), Grid/Nature (1st at Mekka Symposium 1999), Real/Complex (1st at Saturne 2). Then we go way back in time with the first 1988 release on A.D.A.: Wild Copper demo/Wild Copper (aaahhh, the scroller on the workbench brings back some nice memories!). And then another party winner and a real classic in amiga demo history, Enigma/Phenomena (1st at Anarchy Eastern party 91)!!

Other news: it's now possible to sort the complete demo list by year (just select "view by release date" and press "refresh view"). Thanks to pVC on ANN for this idea. And we are working on a comment/vote system. It's not finished yet but it is already possible to register, vote and comment. So now it's in your hands to make this site much more interesting!!! More additions to the voting/comment will be added (like top demo charts,...).

Audio Player: AmigaAMP Final-Version 2.9
After Thomas Wenzel got his PPC running again, he compiled the final version (2.9) of AmigaAMP and offered it as freeware. Why? He doesn't have a lot of time to develop it more, and at any rate doesn't have time to support it. Bug reports und suggestions may be emailed but chances are they won't be answered..

Further Mr. Wenzel is making it known that the old mailing list (the one on MajorDomo) is being deactivated so no spam will be emailed through it. In the place of the mailing list a web-based forum will be opened, in a short while.

AmigaAMP is an audio player with a graphic user-interface. The mpega.library is used to decode on the 68K processors. The PPC version uses the AMP decoder. Furthermore the sndfile.library allows the playing of AIFF, WAV und 8SVX files. Sound is output successfully over the AHI Audio System.

Requirements:
  • AmigaOS 3.0 or higher
  • 68030-50MHz Processor or better
  • mpega.library (Aminet:util/libs/mpega_library.lha)
  • asyncio.library (Aminet:dev/c/AsyncIO.lha)
  • AHI audio system (Aminet:mus/misc/ahiusr.lha)

Bill Buck und Raquel Velasco Comment on Pegasos, MorphOS, AmigaOS4
A few days ago Thendic-France (the distributor of Pegasos) issued a press release on ANN. A wideranging discussion on the theme of Pegasos followed, in which Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco (of Thendic) regularly took part. See also News message and comments on amiga-news.de from 6th June, 2002.

Martin Heine brought together the majority of the relevant comments from Bill und Raquel on morphos-news.de and we present them here in a minorly edited version.

Pegasos Production (Dates, Distribution), MorphOS

1) PRODUCTION RUN: "The next scheduled production run is for 50 boards. In July we will produce up to 500. This is what we have ordered/budgeted for components. The final amount will depend on demand and if all our component orders can be fulfilled. To date complete machines have been configured for the bplan/MorphOS/Thendic development team. We have also configured a small number of machines for a special shipment to an *outside* development group in the US. These computers were shipped prior to 1 June." "You can probably buy a Pegasos in August and maybe in July if you are lucky. In this case, you would have to contact TerraSoft Solutions (www.yellowdoglinux.com)."

"What we are selling *commercially* is the mainboard with the IBM G3 PPC indicated on our websites. This mainboard will be configured by resellers and packaged by them to meet the demands of their customers. At this point, neither Thendic nor bplan will configure complete machines for commercial release. For customers, the latest version of MorphOS will be available online as it is today and it will work on the machine. Of course, the MorphOS team will continue to enhance the features and flexibility of the OS and there will be new releases. We hope this will process will continue in the normal course of business for some time. Yellow Dog Linux can also be installed on the Pegasos, as well as other Linux PPC based operating systems -- they work too."

"for the record we want to repeat that MorphOS is and will be updated online. Ralph and the MorphOS team will release new versions and upgrades as they have. This will continue. There will be something there *on the net* when it is time for customers who purchase a desktop machine with "Pegasos inside"."

"The bplan team will use the production facilities of DCE and will produce the boards and operate the fabrication machines themselves." "We are working with DCE because we can do that there as if it was our own shop. Forget all the other BS. There is no conspiracy against anything...has anyone noticed that the official bplan/MorphOS team has been absent from all these discussions for months? That is because they are hard at work and they know what they have to do. They are working with a great deal of confidence and they should be! The Pegasos and MorphOS are both great products. Is DCE involved in those activities...no. When we are ready to make a board we go to DCE and bring everything we need with us. That is it..." "All the Pegasos machines we have shipped and the mainboards we will ship this week have Northbridges. I ask you how anyone would know this [that there were no northbridges available]? Did Mai tell him? I think not as we speak to them nearly three or four times a week."

2) PROCESSOR BOARDS: "We have the Motorola XPC7455RX1000SC and the XPC7445RX867LC now and are in the process of achieving PCB verification. Motorola is also assisting us in getting samples of the XPC7455RX867P. We have others and have tested them. We are working on it. Gerald and Thomas are very good, but there are many other things to do now too. Power consumption is our primary focus. All the machines are FAST." "Yes, those Motorola processors we referenced were G4s."

3) AmigaOS 4: "What we think of OS4 is irrelevant and has nothing to do with our business. We sell the Pegasos mainboard." "We do not need anything from Amiga Inc. The version of MorphOS that runs natively on a PPC does not need Amiga OS anything..." "It is true we have moved away from Amiga Inc. and we do not have the same level of interest in cooperating with them today as we did before. Time marches on and we simply don't want to waste any more effort." "We sell the Pegasos mainboard. Please speak to your preferred reseller about how you want this to be configured and then buy one from him. You want to load OS4 you are now free to figure out how to do this. That is up to you -- not us!" "The most important thing is this: we are not interested in doing anything to get OS4 running on the Pegasos. Someone else is welcome to and we will support them. The main reason is because we will not devote the resources or time to become "amiga" approved." "The Pegasos mainboard can be configured by resllers and if they are able to get Amiga "approval" then great!"

"No resellers have approached us with regard to the Amiga Inc. licensing issue, but all of the well know resellers have contacted us about getting product. The requirements are a ten board minimum purchase. For pricing you have to send us an email...:) "

4) PEGASOS MARKET / ECLIPSIS: "Again, the Pegasos is a DEVELOPMENT MACHINE for the eclipsis." "In the meanwhile, what is the market for the Pegasos (while the eclipsis is in development)? Probably: a) Linux users, b) embedded system developers, c) application developers that want to do rendering on stacked boards with dual processors or build something very special that has a huge amount of processing power... " "Will "Amiga" be a big market for us? We do not think so. First, because we are not an official Amiga piece of hardware, and secondly because we are using MorphOS. The two just don't go together."

"I did not mean to give you the impression we were not interested in the "Amiga market." I think you know our history with the (platform). We will be very happy -- all of us -- if you can buy the Pegasos as a "ready fitted desktop machine." [...] But, we all have to admit that the "Amiga market" has atrophied a bit. This will not be the *big* market for the Pegasos -- just realistically speaking. The Pegasos will create its own demand." "We never said the trademark [Amiga] was worthless! In Germany it is quite good. UK too. France, Italy, Spain, it is not quite as good, but it is still OK. But, it is not for us...maybe something else. The problem *for us* is what is it now? Is it something from before? Is it something for the future? What is it today? It is all to confusing. The biggest challenge the eclipsis will face is a marketing one. What is it? Its everything! That sounds way too positive. The marketing approach needs to be built around simple concepts. "It has to do what people do already just more easily and anywhere." This is a huge challenge. There is too much baggage in the "Amiga" name for this -- FOR US. The Pegasos is a piece of hardware and this we are convinced will stand on its own. It does not need the association. We build toward the eclipsis with the success of the Pegasos. That is phase one. MorphOS will ride the wave...:) These are our ambitions."

The key is to be unique as a package. Linux is what has created the big opportunity for the Pegasos. Hopefully, "amiga" can contribute to this success too. But, the next step is a combination of hardware and an OS that is dedicated and ready to do something new." "The Pegasos is a great desktop machine. We are going to sell plenty of them. But again, ultimately the idea is that you have something small and modular. This is the "mini-pegasos" or what we call today the eclipsis. The eclipsis is mobile and described on www.thendic-france.com. There is a docking station and here what is too cumbersome or power-demanding remains plugged into the wall (and connected by wire to the internet). Remember the duo dock from Apple? That is the basic idea. Of course, when the main board can be that small you could make a laptop, etc. All the features you referenced are planned."

"Well, we really do not feel like rebels, more like veterans. There are other similar products coming about the same time. The Oqo and Tiqit 83 are also mini-computers and have compatible interfaces for standard computer peripherals. Both are Windows platforms. Then, you have the Nokia 9290 and the Treo 270 which are more phones than computers, but clearly things are moving in that direction. The Nokia uses SymbianOS and supports JAVA. The Treo is kind of neat, but not as capable as the high end Nokia (PalmOS). The prices are high. The Oqo is targeted at $1000, the Tiqit at "laptop prices" and the Nokia and Treo at $599 and $699 *without* concessions from the mobile operator. There in the UK you can get one at Dixon's with a year long service agreement for significantly less. In any case, we think we can beat these prices without too much effort. The issue will be performance vs. power requirements and feature set.

We think with the efficiencies of MorphOS (with the JVM Allan Havemose is developing) and all the money and research being poured into low-power PPC processors (by two very large companies who are interested in the Pegasos) that we will be in the right place at the right time. Our "development platform" is ready and it will be stable well before the first "mini-pegasos" is released. This creates some big advantages for us and will we need them. We do not have any illusions about what a challenge this will be. We will seek strategic partnerships. The wireless operators in Europe are the ultimate target." "We are managing the distribution process. bplan has more important things to do now!" (ps) (Translation: dm)

Oliver Roberts

Modem: SoloControl Version 1.1
Oliver Roberts, who is know for his Warp-datatypes, has come up with a modem control program called ´SoloControl.´ It's for the Pace 56 Solo modem. The current version (1.1) requires an Amiga with a 68020 processor or better, and at least Kickstart 2.04.

Download: SoloControl.lha (21 KB)

Here are a few of the features:
  • Modify the Solo's clock
  • Turn call monitoring on/off
  • Switch answerphone on/off
  • Set number of rings before answerphone answers
  • Set number of rings before the Solo automatically switches the answerphone on (should it be switched off)
  • Toggle power saving mode on/off
  • Display detailed statistics on your last modem connection
  • Display all the calls in the CallerID log
  • Erase the calls in the CallerID log

Amongst other things, this makes it easily possible to keep logs of your connection statistics, and to keep your Solo's clock in synchronisation with your Amiga's system clock. (ps) (Translation: dm)

AmigaOS XL: Experiences with the H&P Big Tower 1800+ (Version 1.23)
In my report, I describe the experiences I have made with the Big-Tower. Version 1.23 of the report contains several additions in the chapters "Introduction", "Harddisk", "Amithlon", "AmigaXL" and "QNX". Also, the chapters have been sorted again, so that the "Software" chapter is again at the end.

Note: Amiga-Voyager shows only ads instead of the pictures. Therefore, I still recommend to use AWeb or disable background images in Amiga-Voyager. A move to a better server is also planned. (ps)

The freeware textviewer 'EvenMore' from Chris Perver is ready for download in version 0.60. Changes since version 0.60 from June the 5th 2002 (Chris Perver changes the version number only with major updates):
  • Created a very basic work in progress IXML plugin (See Ix-Guide, www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/hudson/187.
  • Amended EvenMore's escape code interpreter. Not sure if these codes are in use already, if they are, someone let me know. I have 2 new codes, *e[50;0;0;0m and *e[51;0;0;0m. Both take 3 arguments after them to allocate a pen for text (R,G,B). 50 changes the Pen colour, and 51 will change the background colour, thus giving you multicoloured text.
  • Rewrote RTF plugin from the ground up with full colour support.

Hardware: Serial ATA (SATA) - The new port for hard drives
On the website of Acard, the manufacturer of the IDE-to-SCSI adaptor, you can see that these people are still busy and have released new adaptors. Now they support transfer rates up to 160 MB/sec (LVD-SCSI).

The new port is one of the climaxes of the Computex. More and more manufacturers of mainboards, controllers, and hard drives have products with the successor of IDE and E-IDE (up to UDMA-133) in the program. Serial ATA should replace the parallel ATA complete until February 2003.

The advantage of SATA is the easier and more stable connecting. Timing problems are history. Also the new cables with 4 to 8 poles ease the circulation of air inside the tower because they are not blocking the stream.

SATA uses up to 4 direct point-to-point connections between controller and one device per connection. This doubles the maximum of possible devices. Problems with jumpers and bus-termination are no longer expected, because every wire is terminated at both ends in the chip. A defective device will not effect the others.

SATA is designed for using period of 10 years with two duplications of performance up to 600 MB/sec. At start a transfer rate of 150 MB/sec is supported, slighlty less than LVD-SCSI with 160 MB/sec. Some of the other features are the break through of the 137 GB limit of harddrives, "hot-plug"-abilities, and 1st-Party-DMA.

The first devices will maybe available in third quarter 2002, but some manufacturers of mainboards have started to implement it into their chipsets.

Amiga users can use the new harddrives with an adaptor on normal ATA ports (from UDMA-33) or (maybe the better solution) with bridge adaptors on SCSI. A question about that is send to ACARD, but still on the way. The answer will be presented here. (ps) (Translation: gf)

AmiBlitz V2.26 new distribution with extended documentation (Update)
A new distribution of AmiBlitz 2.26 is now available. This new distribution includes an extended documentation, many libs are now described in the online guide and the different syntaxmodes are now described.

editors note:
We are not able to say something about the differences between the above version and the one reported by Amiforce on 08.06.2002. If you anything about it feel free to tell us.

Update 12.06.2002:
David McMinn explained us the difference:

I saw your note on the AmigaNews site, that you could not see the difference between the different AmiBlitz distributions, so I thought I would clarify.

First of all, Bernd Roesch has updated the editor and compiler greatly, and convinced Acid software to release Blitz Basic 2 for free, under the name AmiBlitz2. However, Bernd did not provide a ready-made package for users to download and use, only updates.

I decided to create an user distribution which would provide everything a person needs to start programming in AmiBlitz as I have been maintaining the Blitz2000 site for a few years. Of course, since AmiBlitz is free, anyone can do this if they choose, such as CJ Stroker has done on the AmiForce site.

The differences between the distributions on the Blitz2000 and AmiForce sites are that they have different contents and are aimed at different people. For example, the distribution provided by AmiForce does not seem to have the acidlibs and deflibs files, so you already need a working installation of AmiBlitz to use it (they might have it in other archives on the site though, I have not looked through all of them). The AmiForce site is also more useful for German speaking programmers, as a lot/most of the documentation they have is available in German (for example, the AmiBlitz manuals). The distributions on the Blitz2000 site are available in different sizes and have all the documents for the libraries included in the archive, as well as useful tools and the library files mentioned above.

The only thing which would be nice to keep the same between all distributions is the default set of libraries that are provided. Bernd suggested this as it makes everything easier from the viewpoint of everyone has the same libraries to start off with.

Sorry for the long mail, but I hope this clears the situation up :)

TrueType Font Rendering: ttrender.library V3.1
On 9th June 2002, Grzegorz Kraszewski has published version 3.1 of TrueType font render engine "ttrender.library" for AmigaOS. According to the author, this version entails a noticable increase in speed. This was obtained by improving memory allocation. The re-allocation of memory during the drawing of each single letter has been eliminated.

This version of the library is based on the FreeType V2.0.9 sources of the project of the same name.

Kraszewski is targeting two goals when porting: Expansion of FreeType's functionality and seamless integration into AmigaOS.

ELSA: new founded devolo AG produces new edition of industry modem Microlink 56k
The on 2002, 1st May in Aachen founded devolo AG brings a new edition of the successfull industry modem Microlink 56k i to the market. So the good ELSA quality doesn't go completely lost.

The team of the devolo AG consists of 25 former workers of the ELSA AG who bring each up to 18 years of experience in data communication into the company. The ELSA AG was founded in 1980 as spin off of the RWTH Aachen. As pioneer of the data communication ELSA brought in 1988 the first by the Deutsche Post accepted modem to the market. For more than 20 years could ELSA establish themselves as leading provider in the area of the data communication and the computer graphics. Dramatic market changes prevented lasting synergies between the different business fields, though. Heiko Harbers, former vice president consumer products at ELSA and now founder and chairman of devolo, draws the obvious conclusion out of this: a clear focussing on the business field data communication and a clear tightening of the portfolio by concentrating on profitable succeeding products is the devolo motto. Amiforce (ANF)

Amiforce: big update - AmiBlitz V2.26
Amiforce has after a longer period of time an update to announce.

The start make some cosmetic changes that had taken most of the time. Many errors had been removed and especially the selected colours got a change after some criticism. Whether it looks better now may be judged by everybody on his/her own. ;-)

Amiblitz:
There's now a new, error reduced version of Amiblitz 2.26 in the Amiblitz section. It's again an update archive that contains next to the English version also the German one. A new Image.res that enhances Amiblitz with further graphical possibilities is also included. GlowIcons are now used and bring the boring old fashioned look to an end. As the old archive contains the new one bilingual docs.

Download: amiblitz2.26.lha (658 KB)

Furthermore there's a little 3D tutorial in the Amiblitz section included. This will be removed in the near future again, though, as it will be completely revised and expanded with example sources. Soon will a beginners course be started that will then lead to different areas. The 3D part will be done by Sterix (a programmer and my best guy) who is training at present on Amiblitz. The first sources look really great. In this direction there'll come quite some things. ;-) Some examples (demos) that could make people very interested in Amiblitz will follow, too.

Softguide:
The softguide section had been opened, too. The beginning is done with Amisat. For this there'll be soon a detailed manual in the helpguide rubric released. The other sections will be updated again, too.

Forum:
Amiforce has now a new forum, too. All interested are invited to enter. Almost all contributions of the old forum had been taken on. So it's not a start at zero. Thanks go to Matthias Münch for his support.

Further material is already being worked on. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Collecting data for the FastFileSystem V46

Olaf Barthel developes the new FFS (FastFileSystem) of AmigaOS 4. Doing that in an as optimal as possible way he needs data. Data about the conditions of as many as possible Amiga partitions. Thus he is able to collect them he has written a little program which determines the file sizes.

The last possible data for sending in it is the 16th June 2002. Please do not send any reports after this day. This day is the deadline and then all reports which I have got up to this date will be analysed. Please join numerously...
Thanks a lot in anticipation, Mario.

From today on, new programs have been integrated into ADA. All visitors can vote on each demo and write a comment. Through these new functions it will be possible in a short time to tell which demos are most loved and the best, and other users will be tipped off which ones they should download.

The comment function can be found under the screenshots in every demo. For the voting you must register (username and password). In the future we'll make the user data editable, so if a user would like to express more about his interests (email address, homepage, system specs) he can do that.

Since a week ago, ADA has also been available at amigademos.de. (ps) (Translation: dm)

The Legacy

Nostalgia: The Legacy - Museum Again Online
The Legacy, the nostalgia museum, is reachable again. As reported there was always some problem with the provider. MishRa says: "The abstinence is over! The old museum keeper mishRa hobbles - on account of his troublesome knees - to the entrance and throws the doors w i d e open. At the same time he barricades them open, so that they won't easily be shut again."

In 'Nostalgic Game Museum' you'll find screenshots, cover-scans und genre definitions for over 10,000 games. 'The Legacy' also offers informationen over the developers of old games for C64, Amiga, Atari, PC and Schneider/Amstrad CPC. (ps) (Translation: dm)

AmigaOS + POP/PPC petition official web site
Emanuel Mair writes:
AmigaPOP.8bit.co.uk is finally online! Here you'll hopefully find all information you could possibly want about the AmigaOS distribution policies and POP/PPC hardware petition. I hope the background information and FAQ will be especially helpful to clear up some of the confusion surrounding these issues.

If you have not yet signed the petition, then please do so now! Please help spreading the word by linking to AmigaPOP.8bit.co.uk. It's not too late to save our favourite OS and a unified POP-based hardware market!

In other news, I have finally managed to get in touch with the PetitionOnline.com administrators. The few abuse and sabotage attempts so far have been removed from the signatory listings. Not that any garbage would ever reach the recipient of our petition, but I understand some thought that it didn't look too good... (ps)

Martin Blom released version 5.21 (beta) of the ahi.device for ix86. The following changes were made.
  • ahi.device: Re-enabled optimization and removed all 64 bit kludges for the Amithlon version. It's still just using the C version of the mixing routines, but is already about 2.5 times faster native (compared to the JIT-compiled 4.180 version). I like it.

  • paula.audio: When opening timer.device (used in the DMA mode), I didn't clear the flags parameter and opened UNIT_MICROHZ instead of UNIT_ECLOCK. [Sigbjørn Skjæret]

AmigaOne: MPEG showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux
Elwood writes on ANN:
I uploaded on Aminet a video in Mpeg showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux. This video is old (March 2002) and not professional in any way (in fact, it never meant to be). I originally wanted to upload it on my website instead of putting this huge file on Aminet but my ISP didn't allow me this. So here it is, to make Aminet even bigger!

Remember this AmigaOne is the prototype (G3/600Mhz) and it runs TurboLinux. And I must confess, I never seen a Linux booting that fast. I'm excited to get my hand on AmigaOS4.

Amiga Arena - Full version of "Samba Partie AGA/ECS" and redesign
With the approval of Jo Seitz (Sayonara Software), Amiga Arena enabled the release of the full version of the football manager "Samba Partie AGA/ECS".

This is the first part of the "Samba" series. Besides lots of other features, the football manager also has an action part where you can actively play with your team.

Amiga Arena has been allowed to release further games by "Sayonara Software" in the future. Yet, for this we need your help, as we don't have all games at our disposal!

We are looking for the following software items:

  • Diego - Football manager
  • WHLM - Ice Hockey manager
  • Samba Partie prof. - Football manager with action part
  • Travel-Manager - Travel simulation
  • Hollywood Pictures - Manager
  • Samba World Cup - Football manager with action part
Please contact: Olaf Köbnik.

Amiga Arena - "Full version" redesign
The Amiga Arena Full versions have been divided into new areas. Besides the familiar download facilities for commercial software and shareware programs, the areas have been restructured, and with "Applaud Software", "Sayonara Software" and "Vulcan Software" three new areas have been added.

Here you will be able to find - apart from the well-known games of the software houses - level codes, cheats, screenshots as well as reviews of the products. Furthermore, we are looking for the game "DNA" by "Applaud Software"! Have fun with our offerings! Amiga Arena. (ps) (Translation: cb)

AmiDock for AmigaOS 4 - New informations
A lot of users have questions about the new version of AmiDock that will be included with OS 4, especially regarding the differences between the OS 3.9 and the OS 4.0 version.

Here are the answers by Stefan Robl, the author of AmiDock.

The OS4.0 version of AmiDock is an almost completely rewrite of the version included with OS3.9 and a lot of outstanding issues were fixed.

The new design comes with a much improved layouter which arranges all types of icons very well (from very tiny to really big ones).

A very nice new feature is the interactive mode of AmiDock which allows the user to arrange, add, remove icons, categories and even docks directly using the mouse without the need to open the configuration dialog.

AmiDock now also supports button type docks allowing for numerous objects (programs, files) to be available at once as this mode consumes very little "desktop real-estate".

With OS4.0's AmiDock, docks can now have their drag bar on all four possible sides of a dock; each dock is now also minimizeable to conserve space.

The new AmiDock is now up to ten times faster than the old version (depending on the number of icons visible at load time).

The most interesting new feature is the possibility to have active content within a dock through plug-ins.

A plug-in of AmiDock is called a "docky". Each docky has full access to all of AmiDock's functionality and can provide for a virtually endless number of features. The usage of dockies is very transparent - throw in a docky and it will work (and vice versa).

A number of dockies will already be included with OS4.0; one of the most requested features - subdocks - was made possible using a docky. There is also a docky which minimizes a dock automatically if the mouse pointer is no longer over the dock. Other included dockies allow you to have clock, a lens, animations and other active content within a dock.

The most thrilling stuff will surely come from third party programmers in the form of third-party dockies (the API will be released with OS4.0) - just imagine having the current network traffic, the printer status, the current rendering process of your raytracer and other similarly useful things in the form of a small and corresponding picture within your dock.

This is just the beginning, we are planning a lot more useful features for AmiDock which may or may not be ready in time for OS 4.0. (ps)

Mediator: 2nd version of PatchInt
PatchInt is to solve a lockup problem with the Mediator board in connection with a SoundBlaster and FastEthernet card. The corresponding text from the CyberGFX site:

'Mr. Matthew Allatt has released a new (2nd release) PatchInt. He writes: "Just a quick email to let you know that I've made a small alteration to PatchInt. I was getting some distortion when playing MP3's through SoundBlaster, which I've never heard before, and wasn't because of my speakers being crap. I don't know if anyone else has had that problem, but I'm hoping that this version should clear that up".

You can find information on PatchInt and all other Mediator programs on the 3rd Party Mediator Software Page.' (sd) (Translation: cb)

Gamasutra: Technology Inspires Creativity: Indie Game Jam Inverts Dogma 2001
Developing games today is very time consuming and costly. Furthermore, developers tend to first concentrate on familiarizing with new hardware to technically make the best use of it. Both go at the expense of new game ideas. In above article Ernest Adams describes the "Indie Game Jam" as antipole to currently adopted game development practice.

The basis for this jam was the question of how many sprites you can display on screen nowadays. After a bit of research, the answer was "round about 100,000". This served as the basis for the development of a simple games engine.

A small group of games developers was then invited to the "Indie Game Jam", who then went on to develop 12 news games within 4 days.

The article describes the surroundings and the games, and offers concluding information in an interview with Chris Hecker, one of this meeting's organisators. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Datatype: ilbmdtPPC V45.9 by Stephan Rupprecht
On 1st June 2002, Stephan Rupprecht has published version 45.9 of his ILBM PPC Datatype for displaying IFF ILBM pictures. Compared to the previous version, the following changes have been made:

  • Bug fix: Because of the change in version 45.7 b/w and greyscale pictures couldn't be loaded anymore (greyscale pictures already didn't work before that).
  • Bug fix: As the OS picture.datatype doesn't pass on HAM and EHB pictures in Chunky format correctly, a workaround for this has been incorporated.

The Datatype runs with AmigaOS 3, CPU 020+, PPC 603+ as well as picture Datatype V43+.

AmigaDE: Ogg Vorbis decoder "jorbis" (Java)
According to Ruben Monteiro in the Amiga Open mailing list, the Ogg Vorbis decoder "jorbis", which has been programmed in Java, runs under AmigaDE.

This decoder decodes the Ogg Vorbis audio stream into a file. For replay, an additional sound player is needed. Note: The player on the Jorbis site needs JavaSound and doesn't run under AmigaDE at the moment.

The Ogg Vorbis format is an Open Source audio format which is an alternative to MP3. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Workshop: Building in Busboard Mediator PCI 3/4000T (shortened)
Author: Mirko Naumann

With the Mediator PCI 3/4000T busboard Elbox offers a very good solution for owners of a A4000-T or A3000-T who wants to extend their Amiga with modern PCI-interfaces. The technical equipment is more than sufficient - the only disadvantage is the lack of an AGP-slot but which has none of the up to now available PCI-extensions.

Building in the board is much more difficult than Elbox writes it in its documentation. First you have to fix the board on the mainboard. For that Elbox delivers ten brass-coloured bolts with thread of which you need five for fixing the board. Unfortunately the gradient of the screws in my A4000-T did not fit with the one of the bolts.

Well, what is to do? I could not find matching screws at the PC-dealers and I did not want to cut the threads. So you have to remove the screws and to fix the bolts with matching nuts on the main board. It is also annoying that the board hides the connection of the clock-battery and of the internal speakers. By bending the contacts it works but thats not a professional solution which you can expect.

Here there are some useful links to this topic:

CCC: EU-parliament said yes to data retention
Despite of many protests the EU-parliament has agreed to loosen the data protection in the EU.

»The passed order "about the processing of personal data and the protection of the private sphere in the electronic communication" enables the memebership states to loosen the regulation of protection for data of connections to "carry out penal persecution and to save the national and public safety. Thus the way is free for the so called data retention.

Data retention means that the data of connections of the participant of the telecommunication are not only individually saved and kept after an official order but for all participants in advance and without a starting suspicion. Because of that the authorities can use also data which are far away in the past. Up to now the data of connections had to be deleted after 80 days after making the calculation.

Data protectors and people of the human rights warn before such a general data saving because thereby they say the fundamental rights for private sphere and freedom of opinion are endangered. Besides this such actions mean a turn away from the assumption of innocence because the data retention above all disadvantage the innocent poeple. Even the committee of the civil rights of the EU voted against it. The 16206 signers of a summons to the parliament refer to it.« (ps) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Felix Schwarz (IOSPIRIT)
After we have not heard much of the software publisher "Innovative" we were surprised that on April the chief developer Felix Schwarz has come back with his newly founded company "IOSPIRIT" and new software-products!

Should this be a first sign of a change at the weakened Amiga market? In this interview Amiga Arena talks with Felix Schwarz about his reasons to go on developing for the Amiga market, about his new software products as well as further new developments.

Felix Schwarz explains how he has found a solution for himself to simultaneously support AmigaOS, MorphOS and emulators and how he is able to do something against not permitted copying.

I completely agree with Felix Schwarz when he says: "Negative signs, negative effect - postive thinking and good products, positive feedback. Let's tackle!"

Finally it is in the hands of the users if they want to set a sign by buying Amiga products and thus make further developments possible.

AmigaOS XL: Experiences with the H&P Big-Tower 1800+ (Update)

In my report, I describe the experiences I have made with the Big-Tower. Version 1.18 of the report finally contains the promised chapters, in which I more closely describe "AmigaXL" and "QNX". Furthermore, I included some links to the "Software" chapter and added the latest "Patches for Amithlon".

Note: The last update was released one month ago. Since the webserver of Compuserve is frozen since the beginning of May, I uploaded this update to Fortunecity, although this server is a bit problematic. In QNX-Voyager popups are generated, in Amiga-Voyager only ads are displayed instead of the images. Therefore, I recommend to use AWeb or Amiga-Voyager (with background images switched off). (ps)
