MorphOS: IceFileSystem 2.3 and IceDoctor 0.9
The IceFileSystem is now available in version 2.3 which includes bug fixes and increases of the performance.
Additionally for the first time a beta version of IceDoctor was published which is a application for repairing a damaged IceFS filesystem.
The filesystem is Shareware (and gets slower in the unregistered version). After 300 sold keyfiles it becomes Freeware.
Changes:
- Trying to copy files into recycledir manually would raise internal
exception and some files still in meta cache could get lost
- FSConfig now can load/save settings to file and print settings
to the shell
- FSFormat now wipes blocks twice as fast
- Bug in job.device fixed
- Added VInfo tool: shows locks and notifies on icefs volumes
- Icefs volumes now always contains recycledir and filechangelog,
use fsconfig to turn them off if desired
- A few smaller things here and there

Bageln - a small number game (Update)
Achim Kern's Hollywood-based remake of the number game Bageln is about computer-aided guessing of a three-digit number. Currently available for MorphOS only, versions for AmigaOS, WarpOS, AmigaOS 4 and AROS/i386 as well as Mac OS X and Windows will follow shortly.
A short description of Bageln: In this game, the computer chooses a secret three-digit number with the figures 0 to 9 - and you have to try to guess them. Unfortunately, you have only 9 attempts! No number is found repeated. After each attempt of guessing, the computer gives you indications in the following way:
- PICO - a number is correct, but on the wrong place
- FERMI - a number is on the correct place
- BAGELN - no number is correct
You will learn to pull ends from these indications and your results will improve by more exercise. The authors of the original program written in Basic are D. Resek and P. Rowe of Lawrence Hall of Science
in Berkeley, California. The first multimedial conversion of the program had been done Achim Kern / KeHo Software in 1998.
Playing the game: Our barmaid Eva turns all three trays and three big "X" will appear. Now it's your turn. A click with the left mouse button onto a tray raises the displayed number, by using the right mouse button it is decreased. If you have selected your three numbers click on Eva. Now Eva gives you the indications (Bageln, Pico, Fermi) as mentioned above.

A-EON Technology: Delay of board delivery
According to A-EON Technology the delivery of the Nemo boards to the beta testers will delay for about four weeks.
You can now read the press release:
London, 10th March 2011 - Following the AmigaOne X1000 Update article in the current edition of "Amiga Future" magazine we asked Adam Barnes, the Technical Director of Varisys, to provide an official Nemo progress report.
"From the horse's mouth"
We have had some problems with procurement of certain items for the revision 2 Nemo board which delayed our production plan by about 4 weeks. The situation was not helped either by the Chinese New Year celebrations. However, I'm pleased to report that these difficulties have now been overcome. We've had one remaining issue with supply of the onboard PC99 audio connector. The best delivery we could obtain for the existing connector type was a minimum order quantity of 10,000 pieces and a lead time of 12 weeks. We had an option for a direct replacement which has 6 jacks (enough for 5.1 analogue out) but unfortunately the Taiwanese supplier did not respond to our communications. Our alternative compromise plan was a triple jack which would support simple stereo audio out through the back panel, with header pins on the board to support 5.1 audio for users who want this feature. However, this was not our preferred option and eventually we managed to source an almost identical PC99 HD audio connector from an Italian company to satisfy our demand for all the Beta test boards.
We already have enough PA6T CPUs in hand and we have also secured supplies of the SB600 south bridge chip and various other long lead parts, with deliveries of all due on or before the 15th of this month, in sufficient quantities for the current schedule of revision 2 beta test boards. Typically, the production time from full kit to assembled boards is 10 days for small batches (the 5 off for approval). This timescale will be confirmed once the kit is issued out for build. The estimated lead time for the balance of beta test boards will be around 20-25 days based on standard PCB fabrication and assembly lead times.
Barnes also confirmed he was in the process of writing up a technical brief of the new dual-core XMOS subsystem. This will include a block diagram and pinouts so prospective end users can start working on the XMOS side of things.

AmigaOne X1000: Linux kernel, white tower cases
Press release:
Penguins anyone?
As part of the pre-qualification process Varisys have created a minimal PowerPC Linux kernel to ensure that all components and subsystems are working as expected on the revision 2 Nemo motherboard. Understandably, Linux driver support is far more extensive and by creating a minimal Linux system Varisys can demonstrate that the board they deliver to the AmigaOS4 developers it fit for purpose.
As an extension of this testing process we have commissioned Varisys to create a desktop Linux port complete with GUI. Although we realize that many Amigans will exclusively run AmigaOS4 we thought that giving the AmigaOne X1000 a working Linux option would add extra value and allow users to run software and utilities that may not be currently available under AmigaOS4.
"It don't matter if you're black or white"
We have been working very closely with AmigaKit to produce "AmigaOne X1000" and "Boing Ball" branded peripherals and merchandise to compliment the excellent A1-X1000 tower case design created by Andrew Korn. In July 2010, AmigaKit began selling a matching black A1-X1000 PS/2 & USB compatible "Boing Ball" keyboard and mouse. These peripherals can be used with the SAM range as well as PC or Mac computers and are also compatible with Classic Amigas by using Cocolino, Micromys, Subway USB or Deneb USB devices.
The original A1-X1000 design was based around a black tower case but, after receiving many requests from customers, we decided to also produce a white version with matching keyboard and mouse combination. AmigaKit began stocking the white mouse at the end of 2010 and hope to be in a position to offer customers and Amiga resellers a choice of the black or white "Boing Ball" tower case in the near future.

Cloanto owns trade marks "Workbench" and "Amiga Forever"
In February 2006 Cloanto applied for the trade marks "Amiga Forever" and four months later for the "Workbench" as well.
In February 2007 and March 2008 Amiga Inc. entered a caveat against the registrations of the trade marks.
On 27th February both opponents applied for closing the proceedings: Amiga canceled its caveat against the two trade marks of Cloanto. And Cloanto will not contest Amiga's trade mark "Amiga". Thus Cloanto owns the two US trade marks "Amiga Forever" and "Workbench".
Commodore USA which had announced an Amiga computer with a operating systems called Workbench keeps acting cool: The "Chief Technology Officer" emphasized that Commodore USA is relieved because the name "Workbench" had raised too much expectations at Amiga users.

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers (Update)
When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over at Aminet was confusion. According to Kleperis, his company IContain is operating from China and about to revive the Amiga line of electronics. Why he choose to use Aminet as his first contact with the actual Amiga scene was not explained though.
At icontainprotects.com, Kleperis' company is indeed advertising cell phones, tablet PCs, various types of TV screens aswell as all-in-one PCs with integrated monitors - all of them sporting prominent Amiga logos. Obviously these devices are third-party products which have been rebranded as Amiga products by IContain.
You can't actually buy these products from IContain though: The company is mainly operating in the socalled Rent-to-own business. Using devices developed by IContain, furniture or consumer electronics devices leased to end users by Rent-to-own providers can be tracked or even remotely disabled should the customer stop paying its fees in time.
Asked about the reason for introducing a line of Amiga products, Kleperis told us that he was approached by a Rent-to-own provider that intended to buy not only the tracking technology from his company but also the actual consumer electronics - provided IContain could offer a "branded solution". As Amiga "used to be all about innovation in the past" (Kleperis) and other businesses like Lenovo or Sony were not interested in cooperation, Kleperis decided to offer Amiga branded devices.
We were told that the licensing deal was "cut just recently by the executor of an estate", that product just started shipping and that we should expect "worldwide press" soon. The IContain president would neither give any further information nor comment our hints that another company has already announced various Amiga products.
Interestingly, while Leo Nigro, Chief Technology Officer of Commodore USA, states in public that his company obtained a license from Bill McEwen and is free "to do with [the Amiga brand] as we please" - Kleperis mentions the executor of an estate as his business partner. The estate in question would likely be that of former Amiga Inc. investor Pentti Kouri, who deceased in 2009.
Update: (24.02.2011, 22:30, cg)
In contrast to our initial assumption, Bill McEwen is apparently involved with this licensing deal. IContain's official press release has been posted by now, which quotes McEwen: "Amiga has continued to work on bringing new products with new partners, and we are pleased to be working with IContain providing new hardware and software solutions that will benefit everyone." MorphOS: Graphic program Gribouillis 2.7-r233 (beta)
Guillaume "Yomgui" Roguez' graphic program Gribouillis2 (screenshots: 1, 2) supports layers, has an unlimited
undo/redo and some simple picture editing functions.
Changes in this latest beta version:
- New features and major improvements:
- Brush: Split radius/opacity parameters to have range of value depending on pressure: min for low pressure, max for high pressure.
This permit to obtain a better 'real' rendering
- Layer compositor: Added possibility to move layers independently from each other. => activate the drawing surface, press any SHIFT keys and drag using the middle button.
- Layers position saved by the OpenRaster format (.ora).
- Palette: More and smaller palette buttons (256)
- Palette: Load&save buttons (using a very simple textual file format ;-))
- Optimierungen und beseitigte Fehler:
- Brush: Optimized the dab drawing loops, plus fixed the dab center on the pixel center (was on it's edge before). That fix also the rendering at low radius (internally limited to .5)
- Brush: Fixed bounding box computation with a low limit to 3x3 pixels
- Brush: Fixed some memory eats
- Brush: Many other minors fixes
- Layer compositor: Twice speed to render the model than before using better cairo compositing
- Layer compositor: FAST and BILINEAR filter used to render tiles depending on the zoom level used
- Layer compositor: Fixed blit memory trash under some conditions
- View: Bigger draw area at startup, relative to the screen size
- Fixed default file pattern for load/save image requesters
- Fixed PNG saving, plus added support of per layer position
Gribouillis2 is available as "standalone" version (13MB) or as "simple" version which is much smaller. But this simple version requires some
additional libraries and interpreters (Python, PyMUI, PyCairo etc.). Both versions the program has to be installed to harddrive.
The author does not recommend starting the program from the RAM-Disk. (cg) (Translation: dr)
