Graphics card: Status update on the ZZ9000
In 2018 the ZZ9000 as the successor of the FPGA-based and open source Zorro II/III compatible graphics board MNT VA2000 could be preordered. The ZZ9000 combines a RTG graphics board, AGA scandoubler and network card equipped with two 666-MHz-ARM coprocessors for applications demanding high processing power like accelerated graphic rendering or JPEG and MP3 decoding. Besides, an USB port provides support for USB mass storages.
Now on the product site the following statement was published: "Due to the global chip shortage, we have decided to stop selling ZZ9000 temporarily. We have preordered all necessary parts to build and ship all existing orders. The current shipping target for 92% of existing orders is January 2022 and the rest in March 2022. Thank you for your patience and support." (dr)

Tools for ARexx development: RxEnv V1.2
At the beginning of September we reported on Carl Svensson's project RxEnv which is supposed to add a 'REPL' to the ARexx development environment.
REPL is for 'Read, Eval, Print, Loop' and offers the option to enter any ARexx code in an interactive window and get immediately response. This might be helpful to find bugs in the code (see this article).
His intension and the story of his project, Svensson has explained in his article The Joy Of Limitations: Writing an ARexx REPL in ARexx. Now he has released version 1.2 of RxEnv with the following changes:
- Implemented immediate mode in the REPL.
- If an error occurs, rxpp now exits with return code 20 instead of return code 1.
- Added malloc() checks to rxpp.
- Added the pprx script.
- Minor cleanups in REPL code.

8-BitArcade-Adventure: "PETSCII Robots" announced for Amiga
PETSCII Robots by popular Texas youtuber 8 Bit Guy is an arcade adventure game originally developed for the Commodore PET, whose in-game "graphics" consisted entirely of PETSCII characters (video).
Since then the commercially distributed title has been made available for various retro platforms (including VIC 20, C64, C128, Plus/4, Apple II, Atari), with each port attempting to exploit the graphical and sound capabilities of the target system as much as possible. In his most recent Youtube release the "8 Bit Guy" now announces further ports, including one for the Amiga 500 - moving pictures of this version can be seen starting at minute 16:50. (cg)

Anniversary: 20 years AmigaSource
For 20 years now Scott Pistorino collects on his site AmigaSource all information around the Amiga. On October 19, 2001 he introduced his project on amiga-news.de. Beside several interviews with Ben Hermans or Fleecy Moss from 2002 there are numerous categories like software, hardware, demos etc. Because Pistorino changed to a new database some time ago, some articles are not yet available again. In the future he plans to add links to all official Amiga systems like X1000, A1222 etc. as well as systems of external developers like MiSTer, Vampire, Raspberry Pi etc. We say congratulations! (dr)

New preview video: Souverän Soccer
Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener (Wings Remastered, MiniGL4GL4ES, Tower 57) is working on a soccer game with 3D view called "Souverän Soccer" (amiga-news.de reported) which is supposed to run on unaccelerated Amiga 1200 and CD32 with 50 fps.
Meanwhile the author has published the 20. preview video from which here two screenshots have been taken:
The crowd asset is a temporary placeholder, taken from Super Soccer (SNES). About the history of the game the author wrote:
"Around 1994 or so, when I lived in Ecuador, my friend Patricio Maldo and I were pretty much the only Amiga users all around, everybody else was into PC. Therefore software supply was pretty bad and we usually had to wait until the next trip to Germany to stock up.
Although I actually hate soccer, we both spent hours over hours with the soccer management simulations "Starbyte Super Soccer" and "Bundesliga Manager Pro" (and he constantly beating me ;) ).
Our verdict was clear: Starbyte had the more interesting features whereas Bundesliga Manager had the superior presentation with its great goal sequences.
What we wanted was a mixture of both, so I started coding one. I'm pretty sure it was Patricio who came up with the name "Souverän!".
Back then I used GFA Basic on my A500 with 1MB. By the time it was pretty cool, had lots of advanced features, but the primary reason for using it was: I simply had nothing else ;)
For the goal sequences I came up with something special: SNES Super Formation Soccer like 3D view! I had seen this in an issue of the german games mag "VideoGames", used those mags a lot for inspiration. Well, it was not fullscreen, of course, limited to 4 color IIRC, consisting out of some 10 precalculated base pictures (thanks to DeluxePaint's 3D functions) and parallax scrolling chunks of 5 rows of pixels or so. Was actually pretty cool nevertheless :)
Unfortunately I ran into some RAM limitations at some point, IIRC it was some issue with GFA Basic itself, something like no more arrays available or so, so the project died when it was already fairly advanced.
So, this here is a tribute to this project from ~25 years ago :)." (dr)

Emulator: FS-UAE 3.1
The author Frode Solheim wrote:
"While I'm primarily working on FS-UAE & Launcher 4, I've seen the need to do some updates to version 3 as well. Especially for macOS users where 3.0.5 is not working very well on the latest macOS releases. But it has useful fixes for other platforms as well, including a fix for using .lha archives on Windows and a compatibility fix for using QEMU-UAE on recent Linux distros. I haven't announced version 3.1 on fs-uae.net yet, among other things because I don't have installers prepared yet, and I also haven't had time to make sure that FS-UAE Arcade runs correctly. Apologies for not having a more smooth upgrade path, but I simply haven't had time.
I have made a post over at the English Amiga Board with links to FS-UAE & Launcher version 3.1. I recommend that most users using 3.0.5 upgrade to this version." (dr)

AmigaOS 4: MediaVault 1.5.1
MediaVault is an open source application for AmigaOS 4 which can be used to discover online radio stations and, since Version 1.4.0, also to listen to podcasts. An external player like the free AmigaAmp or the commercial Emotion and the jansson.library v2.12.1 are required. About the latest version 1.5.0 the author George Sokianos has written:
"When I started working on MediaVault I was thinking that I would be very happy to release new versions every two weeks. And here we are, with releases every few days, not even two weeks. Sure, some of them were small or bug fixes only, but the majority had one or two changes that make the user experience better.
Like the way the podcast episodes are shown in this version and the new updates auto check every time you start MediaVault. The latter will keep you updated, without the need to learn about a new release from a blog post or check for that manually.
From v1.5.1 when you select a podcast, either from your favourites list or from the discovery ones, the podcasts list appears at the middle of the MediaVault window. This way it is easier to read their titles and the date they were released, with the need to make the window bigger. You can always return to the search results by selecting the section from the left sidebar.
There were some extra changes and fixes to make the application better all the way and a lot of code cleanup, to keep it readable for other developers.
I would like to thank all of my supporters for helping me develop MediaVault, adding new features and making it better and better." (dr)

Little review: Password management "PassPocket"
Yesterday version 1.1 of the password manager 'PasspPocket' was released in the OS4Depot. However, the archive includes versions for both AmigaOS 3 and 4. We took a look at the version for AmigaOS 4 and daringly left the instructions (in German and English) aside (for now) and started the program directly - hoping to be able to dive intuitively into the world of password management...
After starting the program, we are greeted by the following small window:
Hm, our expectations were dashed right at the beginning: Logically (?) I assumed that some window opens and you are asked whether you want to create a new password database or open an existing one. Since one is asked directly for a password, this can only mean: First start of the program, so a new database is created and I give the password. Which of the readers goes along with this train of thought...? I try to be creative, not to use simply "test" and decide for "OhneAmigaistdieWeltfade" ;) I could have saved myself this labor of love, though, as immediately a window grumbles, "The main password does not match a database". Well, the menu of 'PassPocket' only allows an "Quit". So, with my intuition I didn't get far and now I'll have a look at the manual after all. "Getting Started - Test driving PassPocket." The author probably guessed that there would be questions. There I read that 'PassPocket' always automatically searches for databases in the folder "Database" and in this first case finds the sample database. Aha. The password would be "AmigaRulez!". Let's try, works:
I learn further that pressing the pen (AISS package required!) starts the edit mode of the entry. I try with the "Sample Account":
Oh dear, also caught Google...;) With the magnifying glass the password can be shown, here "Password" is used sensibly. I cancel and want to create my own database now, of course. Using the menu item "Database" and the entry "New", a window like the first one shown above is generated, now with the text:" Enter a master password to create a new database." After so much mental work already done, I now make it easy and use: "Amiga". Thereupon a selection window opens for the assignment of a name for the database. I stay with "Amiga".
I'll do it!
So, how can you use this in a meaningful way? Again a look into the manual. One learns: If an entry is activated (left mouse button), you can use CTRL+Alt+u to enter the web page, for example, in the browser at the top. Works! The username can be inserted with CTRL+Alt+n and the password finally with CTRL+Alt+p. Works.
I am now still interested in what happens after closing and restarting the program. Will I be offered different databases? No, I am simply asked for the main password of the database. Hm, okay, then, I think, it will simply compare all existing databases with my entered password and open them if they match. So I type in "Amiga" and get the disappointing message: password does not match any database. Hmm...Consult the manual again. Oha: I have to change the tooltypes of the program myself and add to my newly created database...:
So I add: 'DATABASE2=Amiga' and 'BACKUP2=Amiga_Backup'. So, now I start the program again and type in 'Amiga' and behold, my "Forum Amiga News" entry appears...But there shouldn't be a more user-friendly solution...? What is also not clear to me: Why is it only possible to delete all account entries of a database and not a single one? It is more likely that I have deleted my access data of a single site, so I don't need them anymore and only want to have this entry deleted...
Since not only IBrowse, but under OS4 also Odyssey Web Browser offers a password management, the question remains: What for and when do I use 'PassPocket'? Since surfing the internet with an Amiga is an exciting and challenging task, which sometimes works better with one browser, sometimes with the other, it would make sense not to create the passwords again with every browser, but to use 'PassPocket'. By the way, the program is free and open source, the source code is included in the archive. (dr)

Famous Amiga users: Horst Seehofer (german politician)
That the parting home secretary of Germany and former prime minister of the german state Bavaria enjoys a model railway in his spare time has been publicly known for quite some time already. Now, however, in an interview with german news magazine "Der Spiegel" (issue 45/2021), Horst Seehofer revealed another, at least former, hobby as well.
Asked what exactly he would like about model making, he answered: "In the past I always unscrewed every Amiga computer because I wanted to understand how it works. Today it's different, most people don't know what a circuit board is today, some can't even fix a bicycle tire. On the model railway you do it all at once: You build with wood. You deal with electrics. You can program." (snx)

ModExplorer 3.8 FE for all Amiga systems
As author Jörg Renkert writes on his homepage, the point of ModPlayer is not to be just another audio player (there are already enough good ones) with which to listen to your music archives. Instead, it offers users mods that they have never heard before. To do this, ModExplorer randomly downloads modules from the Internet (including Aminet, Modland and modules.pl) and plays them. These mods are also not stored permanently. Instead, ModExplorer creates a playlist that contains Internet links to these music files. This way they can be played again later.
The new version 3.8 now also offers a visual plugin that graphically represents the tracks by patterns and equalizers. Likewise, the author has integrated a small Trailblazer game as a gimmick. Besides some bug fixes, the program can now be controlled with the joystick.
The version name has received the appendix 'FE', because according to the author ModExplorer now includes all feature requested from users and also from himself. Therefore, this will be the final version (FE) of ModExplorer. But bug fixes would be made. However, he plans a special version for 68k Amigas for some of the functions of ModExplorer these Amigas so far overload. (dr)

Lionheart Remake: Version 1.20 of Java por of Lionheart in development
After Byron 3D Games Studio had released the amiga game Lionheart for the LionEngine developed by them as Lionheart Java Remake in mid-October in version 1.10, the development of version 1.20 has now been started with the release of first screenshots of the underwater world.
Pierre-Alexandre, one of the developers, told us that the boss is finished. Now there is still some cleanup to do to complete the 'Underworld' tasks. Then he wants to add support for CRT filters and a launchable level editor. Having seen some videos of the remake on YouTube where none of the players could finish the first stage, he now is going to to simplify it.
The source codes for both the LionEngine and the game implementation are available on GitHub. (dr)

In early May, Ben Hermans was delisted as Hyperion's director and presumably replaced by a judicial liquidator for Ben Hermans B.V. - the company that held the actual director position, while the person Ben Hermans acted as its permanent representative. According to an entry in Belgium's legal newsletter (local copy), Hermans was already reinstated as a director at the end of June (automated translation):
"With judgment of the Dutch-speaking business court of Brussels from June 18, 2021 [...] the judgment of May 7, 2021 where Mr. Jean Louis de Chaffoy de Courcelles was appointed as judicial liquidator, has been overruled. The judicial dissolution of Ben Hermens [B.V.] was revoked and the judicial liquidator was released from his assignment."
This week, Belgium's company register has been updated as well and now lists Ben Hermans' company as a director and Hermans himself as the company's permanent representative in that role again.
In a statement included in our previous news item, Mr. Hermans had announced that his private company had only got in trouble because it failed to file the yearly account for 2019 in time and that he was working on solving that.
Said yearly account is also available online now (local copy). The last page of the PDF file is - in contrast to the Rest of the document - made up of a picture containing scanned text instead of actual text and is therefore not readable for translation software. We OCR'd the document and fed the resulting Dutch text to a translation program. The result tells us the following:
On November 4, 2019 Ben Hermans sold 2165 Hyperion shares he personally owned to his company Ben Hermans B.V, for a price of 402,690 Euro (186 Euro per share). These are likely all of Hermans' shares: After a capital increase just a few months before the transaction in question, Hermans owned about 97% of the total of 2245 Hyperion shares. The transfer of shares from Ben Hermans to Ben Hermans B.V. has to be reported in the latter's yearly account due to a potential conflict of interest: Hermans sold shares of the company he runs to another company, while permantently representing the latter in the former's board of directors.

Accelerator board: First batch of 'Tsunami 1230' delivered
At the beginning of August the developer Miguel Fides had announced a new accelerator board called 'Tsunami 1230' for the A1200. At the beginning of September then a first production run was started. As Miguel announces on the 'The Tsunami Project website, these boards have now been sent not only to the first pre-order customers, but also to selected stores. These include Relec (Switzerland) and Retropassion (UK) as well as Alinea in Germany. When asked, Simon Neumann from Alinea told us that currently, however, no cards have arrived yet.
Those who missed the pre-order campaign for the first production run can still express their interest in the card via Mail. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: FTP-Server 'ZitaFTP' 1.30
Hans de Ruiter has released version 1.30 of his commercial FTP server 'ZitaFTP'. He wrote:
"I have a new ZitaFTP Server update for you. This one has a major new feature that's almost invisible (and that's by design). The new feature is: countermeasures against password cracking. It's designed to keep hackers out of your server and your machine, keeping your files safe.
More specifically, it protects against brute-force and dictionary type password cracking attempts. These attempts involve repeatedly trying different username and password combinations until they finally stumble on one that gets them in. It may sound impractical, but remember that these attacks are automated. Without any countermeasures, many password combinations could be attempted automatically per-second. ZitaFTP Server's password cracking prevention slows down and locks out would-be hackers, thereby keeping your files safe.
ZitaFTP Server is currently designed to be an easy to use private network server. It's perfectly capable of being an internet facing FTP server, but deliberately haven't added that ability to the UI. That's because the internet is a risky neighbourhood.
In the physical world, thieves can rattle windows and doors at night, looking for one that's loose (had that happen in Toronto one night). If they find a loose one, they sneak in. Well, on the internet the entire globe is your neighbourhood. Every single computer on the internet could potentially communicate with your internet facing server, meaning that good, bad, and downright evil people could all potentially come knocking, or rattling your server's virtual windows.
I simply wasn't comfortable adding internet server features to the UI without some kind of countermeasures against hacking attempts. The countermeasures are now here, so adding UI features to make setting up a full internet facing FTP server will be next (e.g., handling an external domain & TLS certificate)."
A single license of 'ZitaFTP Server' is available for about 47 Euro. The program can be tested for free for 30 days. (dr)

Trademark protection: Cloanto withdraws opposition against Intellivision's Amico
After being forced by third party to defend the Amiga trademarks against Intellivision's "Amico" game console, Cloanto now filed a motion to withdraw their opposition at USPTO with prejudice, meaning that the opposition is replaced by a separate agreement between the parties, which prevails (PDF file).
On Twitter Amiga Corporation commented: "Amiga and Amico both mean friend. To stop any speculation: we had a productive exchange about coexistence, and concerns were resolved. Amiga wishes Intellivision all the best for its entertainment project." (snx)

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.2
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.8, which allows the development of games from various genres (see short tests of two Redpill games). RedPill is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM.
Regarding the major jump from the previous version 0.8.13 to the latest 0.9.1, we have asked the author for some additional information which he kindly provided:
"Version 0.9 is a big step forward in the game creator progress, not just for the number of features that have been added but because it makes game development easier than before which is why Redpill exists in the first place. For each level you can define the music to play, the transition effects, the background to use and a lot more things. Before you had to use some triggers to set up these values per level as they were set up only for the project. Adding and browsing objects and tiles is much easier with the shortcuts added in the screens, editing levels if faster now (YouTube video).
The performance has also improved as has the compatibility with 68000 cpus (older versions required a 68020). The audio engine now uses PHX library which means that you have music and sounds at the same time without using a 3 channels mod.The sprite layer support is much better now, supporting 16 colors layer (instead of 4 color) and setting it up in the background or the foreground of the screen (YouTube video). When running in AGA, games use 24bit color precission and gradients even if the game is ECS. There are many other fixes and improvements thanks to the feedback from users.
These are two YouTube example tutorials showing how to do some type of games, and how fast is to get results:
Currently some games are in developemnt:
A lot of effort has been put into this rekease, I hope the Amigans enjoy it".
Update: (04.11.21, 20:40, dr)
Meanwhile version 0.9.2 is available on Aminet which mainly fixes bugs. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: MediaVault 1.5.0
MediaVault is an open source application for AmigaOS 4 which can be used to discover online radio stations and, since Version 1.4.0, also to listen to podcasts. An external player like AmigaAmp and the jansson.library v2.12.1 are required. About the latest version 1.5.0 the author George Sokianos has written:
"I just released a new version of MediaVault for everyone to play with this weekend. With this version, a couple of new features arrived and a few fixes as well. With MediaVault v1.5.0 you will be able to mark online radio stations and podcasts as your favourite ones and have them listed in a separate list. This way you will be able to find and start listening to them much faster, without the need to search all the time for them.
To do that, above the play button, there is now a small yellow star with a plus sign, which you can use to add the radio station or podcast to the favourite list. This then changes to a star with a red minus sign, so to remove it from the favourite list. To enable those buttons you have first to find in the lists the one you want, select it and then the buttons will be enabled.
While we are on that, there is also one more button available, whenever you select a podcast episode, which can be found beside the little star, above the play button. By clicking on that when an episode is selected, the episode is added at the "Listen Later" list, under the Podcast section at the left sidebar. This way you can mark episodes you would like to listen to when you have more time.
If you already use the previous version, please use the self-update process, which you can find in the application menu. This can be used to update to the latest available version automatically, and before you do that, the whole changelog is shown.
I would like to thank all of my supporters for helping me develop MediaVault, adding new features and making it better and better." (dr)

AmigaOS 4: Comparison of video players (Polish)
In a detailed article - Polish original bzw. automatic translation - the author 'MUFA' has reviewed the different video players available for AmigaOS 4: Tested with an AmigaOne X1000 equipped with a Radeon HD R9 270 graphics card and an AmigaOne X5000 equipped with a Radeon RX 560 graphics card. Test candidates has been on the one hand the free MPlayer and FFPlay as well as the two commercial players DvPlayer and Emotion. He also has include in his consideration the support of the Unified Video Decoder (UVD).
Verdict: As of now, he recommends Emotion for overall performance. He awards second place to MPlayer for the best player without UVD support as well as its exemplary stability and free availability. Only in third place he sees DvPlayer, whereby he points out that with Hans De Ruiter a proven expert is entrusted with the further development and he therefore expects a lot from future versions. Robert Smith has updated his project 'DrawBridge' (Disk Reader and Writer Bridge)for read Amiga disks using a common PC disk drive. According to the author, additional to improved diagnostics, improved reading/writing, extra features and new UI version 2.7 mainly offers HD floppy disk support. All this work has fed back into WinUAE meaning that WinUAE (and soon Amiberry) will also support real HD disks in real-time.
As he stated, "the official WinUAE will support this in v4.9 when it’s released via a plug-in (FloppyBridge) from my site. That plug-in gives you a few more options to increase speed."
Besides, it is possible to be placed on a waiting list: Smith sells his little board for USB Slimline disk drives for 25 British Pound plus shipping. The boards are fully compatible to Arduino Software (IDE) which enables future firmware updates.
All documents of Smith's project are available on GitHub under a free license. (dr)

GitHub project: Amiga 4000 accelerator board 'Z3660'
On GitHub the developer 'shanshe' has started a project for the Amiga 4000 accelerator board 'Z3660' which is based on John "Chucky" Hertell's A3660 board as well as the Z-turn Board. In contrast to the A3660 (currently) only 060 CPU are supported. If Z-turn FPGA is not used, then you get a simple A3660. The only difference is that all A3660 PLDs are replaced by a XC95144XL-TQ144 CPLD. If you use a Z-turn FPGA, then you can add 128 MB of CPU RAM (more RAM, RTG, AHI, USB, SCSI are planned in the future). (dr)

MorphOS: QR-Code generator 'QRCodeLab'
MorphOS developer Frank Mariak has released a MUI tool called 'QRCodeLab' which can be used to easily create QR codes and afterwards copying them to the Clipboard or saving them as pictures. We have tested the tool using our Amiga-News website: Working!
As the author wrote, "currently, it only supported encoding to UTF8 and non of the other compressed formats like numeric and/or alphanumeric are supported to reduce the code size. It dynamically adjusts the QRCode version based on the length of string."
If you have any suggestions or ideas for improvement, please feel free to contact the author via mail. (dr)

Countdown: C64 & Amiga game music remade as epic film scores
Running until Sunday, 24. October 00:39 CEST, a Kickstarter campaign tries to finance the C64 & Amiga game music album 'Epic Action Vol1' (amiga-news.de reported). So far 13.000 Euro from the required 23.000 Euro were payed. On our request a member of Prismatic Realms told that a failure of the financing also definitely mean the end for the project. But in any case the group will continue to develop retro games. (dr)

AmigaGuide to HTML converter: GuideML 3.16 for AmigaOS 3/4
GuideML is an AmigaGuide to HTML converter which can convert most AmigaGuides and since v3.1 also has a GUI. After 13 years the author Chris Young has updated the tool, which originally was started by Richard Körber. Additional to some bug fixes, now the tool uses the locale.library v38+ which should remove accents from characters for better compatibility. And version 3.16 introduces basic support for the '@{img' command of AmigaOS 3.2.
The command line version now requires OS2.1 (but no longer tested by the author) while the GUI version at least requires AmigaOS 3.2. The archive includes also a version for Amiga OS4 (screenshots).
In our little test the conversion worked fine with different AmigaGuide files. But the tool does not create a protocol file so you do not know what maybe went wrong. A 'main.html' file always is created as well as seperate html files and for the other chapters.
The program is open source, the source code available on GitHub. (dr)

Music editor: MusicMaker V8 Version 3.12 (update)
Thomas Winischhofer's 'MusicMaker V8' ('MMV8') is a sample-based music editor which the author started back in 1986 as hobby project. As the author wrote, "much later it published in France and the German speaking parts of Europe by Data Becker (V1.76) and by Wolf Software (V2.358, Germany only)."
This version 3 dates back to late 1992 and was never published as a commercial product.
In the readme it is explained, that MMV8 uses "macros" which - unlike "patterns" in trackers - apply to a single channel only. Those "macros" are then put in a playing order, which is called a track. As MMV8 provides up to eight audio channels, up to eight tracks can be set up.
As Thomas Winischhofer told us some time ago, he "doesn't really want to do anything more on the MM except occasionally fix bugs that stand out." That would not be worth reporting. However, this has turned into a few updates in recent times, each of which has been published on Aminet. As the developer writes, he has small windows of time at the moment, which, unlike the DSP drivers - his
other Amiga project of the recent past) he can use sitting at the emulator to fix bugs and improve the source code from 1986 and the following years. But he definitely doesn't want to take away the character and charm of the 80s from the program.
In the latest versions the author mainly worked on the GUI and fixed several minor bugs.
Who of our readers had or has used the music editor?
Update: (07:43, 24.10.21, dr)
Meanwhile version 3.12 is available. Now "m" now shows instrument paths and minor inconvenience in the install script were fixed. (dr)

Review: Amiga python port of puzzle game 'Oil Worker'
In mid-July, developer Janne Peräaho had begun a series of Python conversions with the game Space Invaders. He now continued this series with the game OilWorker originally published by Wil Alvarez in 2008 as implementation for AmigaOS 4.1. Thereby he optimized the loading of the game data, created the possibility to reset the highscore and added a small manual.
The aim of the game is to lay an oil pipeline from the delivery point to the tank. The pieces to be used for this purpose must be placed next to each other in the playing field in a meaningful way, whereby a minimum number must be reached. In a preview at the upper right edge you can see the next four pieces to be processed for the pipeline. If one just doesn't fit the line you've started (the pieces can't be rotated), it can be placed anywhere on the board or built over an existing one (for a $50 deduction). The game features simple, but nice background music and also single SFX.
In our small test, 'Oil Worker' ran very smoothly and without problems on an AmigaOne X5000. Using emulated AmigaOS 4.1 (WinUAE on an Intel 2.20 GHz laptop), the game also worked, but only 1-2 FPS were achieved, which meant that setting the parts was still reasonably smooth. However, the time it took for the oil from the ground to reach the upper well and then flow through the pipe was disproportionately long, making the whole thing impossible to play sensibly.
The game is definitely recommended for all those who want to strain their grey cells a bit with a small game in between. However, it should be tested whether the game runs just as smoothly on weaker native hardware (X1000, Sam boards) or whether it can be used sensibly with a faster emulation (current PC). (dr)

Puzzle: Wheel of fortune game 'YAWoFFA'
Developer 'zooperdan' today released his BlitzBasic-written implementation of the Wheel of Fortune game called 'YAWoFFA' (Yet Another Wheel of Fortune For Amiga). The principle should be familiar: Spin the wheel of fortune, choose a letter and try to solve the word or combination of words you are looking for. The game can be played alone or with four players.
YAWoFFA requires Kickstart 2.x and 1MB chip ram. In the current version 0.4 the game supports only English terms and offers the four categories 'Amiga Games', 'Movies', 'Famous people' and 'Miscellaneous'. In future versions a computer opponent and more categories are planned. The game is available for free, a small donation is of course welcome.
Since we have accompanied the development of the game for some time and were in exchange with the developer, we asked whether a German-language variant would also be possible. The author kindly took care of it, but so far failed in the implementation of the 'umlauts' in BlitzBasic. He is happy about suggestions in this regard, but points out that the idea of reading the text file (with the words) with the correct code does not work in BlitzBasic. (dr)

AmiWest: Announcements of A-EON/Amigakit
Matthew Leaman (Amigakit, A-EON), Trevor Dickinson (A-EON), and Steven Solie (ExecSG) are not attending AmiWest in person, but will be talking about A-EON and Amigakit's projects and products in a live-streamed video conference. Most of the points addressed can be seen in the screenshots of the respective presentation below, but we have briefly summarized some additional points addressed:
- New versions of Enhancer and DvPlayer are available now (see screenshots)
- Matthew Leaman talks about Enhancer Release V54 - the in-house OS project, which he consistently calls a "distribution": It is installed on its own partition without changing the AmigaOS 4 partition - many users had wished for this. The user could then choose during the boot process whether to start Enhancer Release V54 or AmigaOS 4.
- Hans de Ruiter is working on "NovaBridge", a Warp3D driver that does not access the hardware but Warp 3D Nova. This makes it possible to run old Warp3D titles - WipeOut 2097 is shown - on modern graphics cards for which no W3D driver exists.
- Dickinson shows screenshots of AmigaOS 4.1 on the latest revision of the A1222plus motherboard and describes the current state of work. He does not want to give an estimate when the motherboards might be available.
- Dickinson wanted to present a "video demo" of the long announced LibreOffice port, but due to a "hardware mishap" of the responsible developer the video did not materialize.
- Andy Broad is working on an OS4 port of ImageFX

AmigaOS 4: Preview to Qt 6.2.0
In 2011, Alfkil Wennermark released a first native port of the C++ class library Qt 4.7 for AmigaOS 4.
At the end of August on amigans.net, the author reported that he is about to port Qt6. Now he has uploaded a first preview of a text editor to OS4Depot ceated with QT 6.2.0. Following the instructions of the author, we get the following impressions:
The text can be smoothly marked and formatted using the corresponding icons. The tool runs without any problems or crashes. On amigans.net the author also has introduced other applications like a clock or a calculator. He also has confirmed that at one point he will also port the Qt WebEngine. Further details he will provide in a future Twitch stream.
If you want to support the author you can do it using his PayPal address. (dr)

Game announcement: 'Balloons' for all Amiga systems
Achim Kern is not only continuously working on his 'SmartHome' project for automating one's own four walls (amiga-news.de reported), but also uses the multimedia-oriented programming language Hollywood used for this purpose to develop games such as Mars Tank Attack.
In his latest game project, 'Balloons', those balloons have to be shot at a fair, with the difficulty increasing from level to level: with more balloons, shorter time and a limited number of shots. Likewise, in higher levels, certain sequences are given, such as three blue, two red, four green balloons. This sounds simple, but the player has to remember this order...If you have further ideas for levels, please contact Achim Kern. The screenshots kindly provided by the author should give a first impression. The game will be available for free for all platforms supported by Hollywood Player and is planned for the end of the year.

ComputerBase: 32-bit console Amiga CD³² & 16-bit CD player Philips CD-i (german)
At the title link, german tech magazine ComputerBase compares Commodore's Amiga CD³² as Europe's first 32-bit game console with the CD-i, the 16-bit multimedia system that was introduced by Philips in 1991 and co-developed with Sony.
The actual competing product, however, the Amiga CDTV, that had been introduced by Commodore also in 1991, is not mentioned at all. (snx)

MorphOS: Adventure interpreter ScummVM 2.5.0
Press release: Twenty years ago today, on Tue Oct 9 16:30:12 2001, Ludvig Strigeus pushed the initial revision of the ScummVM code, which was version 0.0.1 of the project. Time flew quickly and, fast-forward to the present day, we are proudly releasing ScummVM 2.5.0 "Twenty years ago today…"
The list of changes is tremendous.
First of all, this is the first release that supports 2.5D games (almost 3D), thanks to the merger with ResidualVM. With this release we announce support for Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey and Myst 3: Exile. This is why we jumped straight to 2.5 in our versioning. Please note that only desktop platforms currently support these games and other platforms may or may not gain the support later depending on their capabilities.
In addition to these 3 games and engines, we officially support 10 more new engines and subengines that add compatibility with the following games:
- Little Big Adventure
- Red Comrades 1: Save the Galaxy
- Red Comrades 2: For the Great Justice
- Transylvania
- Crimson Crown
- OO-Topos
- Glulx interactive fiction games
- Private Eye
- AGS Games versions 2.5+
- Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy
- The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time
- Crusader: No Remorse
- L-ZONE
- Spaceship Warlock
We love localized game releases and multiple platform versions, thus with this release, we enhanced the support for Lure of the Temptress Konami release, Blue Force Spanish, Ringworld Spanish, Amazon: Guardians of Eden Spanish, Mystery House French, Russian translations of Sierra AGI games, Elvira 1 Japanese PC-98, Bargon Attack Russian, Woodruff Russian, Eye of the Beholder Japanese Sega-CD, Legend of Kyrandia Hebrew, Legend of Kyrandia 2 Hebrew, Legend of Kyrandia 3 Simplified Chinese, Inherit the Earth PC-98 Japanese, Gabriel Knight 1 Macintosh, Xeen Russian to name but a few. Notably, Macintosh b/w versions of Loom and Indy 3 are now also supported.
Besides the new games and game versions, ScummVM 2.5.0 brings many notable improvements and new features. We have completed a major rework of the GUI: We now support Unicode characters everywhere. The GUI also adapts to high resolutions used in HiDPI screens. The Nintendo DS port has been significantly rewritten. We added GOG and Steam achievements to a large number of Wintermute games and enabled KeyMapper in more games. Thanks to the work of one of our GSoC students, we have now added an option for text-to-speech to the games Sfinx, Soltys and The Griffon Legend.
You may find all of this goodness available to a number of platforms on our download page or let the autoupdater kick in on Macintosh and Windows.
We wish you great adventuring, happy puzzle-solving and exciting journeys to RPG worlds, and hope to see you around in the coming years.
And by the way, GOG.com is running a special promo tied to the release and our anniversary, where you can buy many ScummVM-supported games at a discount.
