Amiga 4ever - Ausgabe 11

Kölner Amiga-Messe "Home Electronics World" Mitte November mit

"A peripheral control circuit for a computer system. Independent control and
interface circuits are provided for left and right audio channels, for a
communications port, for storage media, and for joysticks or paddles.
Control logic is provided for direct memory access to system memory and for
interrupts to the processor by each of the peripherals. Sound data
corresponding to a sound waveform during a particular time period is fetched
using DMA or interrupts. Registers store data for selecting the output rate
of the sound data, the length of the sound waveform, and the volume of the
sound waveform. Four audio channels and two separate audio ports are provide."
Klingt nach dem Original Amiga-Chipsatz-Design, oder?»
Genau, das ist es! Also kein neues Patent. Verwirrend war das Datum
verschwunden.

24 bit Sound in wenigen Wochen
Bussystem kann u.a. Medio mittels zusätzlichem Flachbandstecker gesteckt
werden (optional auch mehrere davon). Melody1200xxx arbeitet analog mit
8, 16 und 20 bit, digital mit 8,16 und 24 bit. Wir empfehlen den flinkeren
Betrieb in Zorro-Rechnern in Verbindung mit
Unity.

an apachedev@rebol.com wenden.

In aller Kürze
Planetamiga gibt ab 25. November 99 den neuen Amiga-Info-Service "Movement
Amiga" heraus.

15:00) befinden verschickt.
Informations-Unterversorgung in Österreich abdecken.
Erlagschein.
A service for the planet. A planet for the amiga.

Power verdoppeln beim A3640 Prozessor?

"Foundation" und "Foundation The Directors Cut", kurz Foundation DC, was von
Download:

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
The big Home Electronics World show has come and gone (November 12 -
14, in Cologne, Germany), and there were interesting items for Amiga
users. Amiga International had their large booth set up, and seemed to
generate a fair amount of interest. We weren't there, but are told
Petro Tyschtschenko was (almost) as upbeat as ever. However,
reflecting reality, there were fewer vendors than last year. The mood
was reportedly less positive, but that seemed to be based mainly on
there being no clear direction to the future, not fears of an imminent
death of the Amiga market.
The folks at Haage & Partner demonstrated a 400 Mhz G3 Power PC
board, based on the IBM CHRP spec. It also featured PCI and AGP slots.
There are rumors a native PPC based AmigaOS port is being considered
for this board. If so, that's the most realistic possibility for a
future Amiga system we've seen yet. We understand the board was
presented as a development system though, not as a future Amiga.
However, and perhaps very significantly, Petro T. is quoted in an
article about HEW on the amiga.org website as stating "My first
priority now is to convert the OS to the PowerPC." Indications are
that Haage & Partner are willing to do the conversion. Is Amiga
willing to license it, providing the formal approval to call it Amiga?
We don't know, but feel this would be important to keep developers
focused, instead of trying to cover many different future
possibilities and spreading themselves too thinly.
If CHRP can be abandoned in order to bring down the price of a PPC
board, then the future looks even better for a PPC system. There are
indications that this could become possible, with IBM leading the way
to a less expensive PPC standard. As we hear more about possible Amiga
PPC futures, we'll let you know.
The Met@Box (AmiJoeG3) G3 Board for the A1200 was also demonstrated
at the Cologne Show. This is a PowerPC based accelerator, which does
not sport a 68K co-processor.
Also of interest was the Unity Net Ethernet card. We've a story on
that product below.
Finally, once again there was no BoXeR Computer to be seen, or so
we've been told.
Over at Deja.com, a poll is being held on the most popular operating
system. Looks like the voting may be in several stages on different
features. Regardless, when we checked in Amiga OS was actually leading
the voting! It was way ahead of MonopolySoft's Windoze, and even ahead
of Linux. Most interesting and yes, it left me with a very smug
feeling.
And, despite the current situation in the Amiga market, there's a lot
for you to read in this issue. We hope you enjoy it.

Brad ,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you do to publish
this newsletter to all of us die hard Amiga Fans, I am truly sorry to
hear what Gateway has done to this fine machine. I just wonder what
the cutoff point for that company was, all that money, time and effort
just to throw it away when they were close to releasing the next OS ,
and all the other interesting B.S info they leaked to the press.
But as Any Modern Day Technical Guru , I own Amigas , Mac's and PC's
, I use all the Operating Systems, Linux 6x , BeOS ,Amiga OS ,
winblows 95/98/nt/2k whatever, I try not to bash each OS for what it
Cant do, just appreciate all that they can do... But I will never Ever
Buy anything gateway again for what they have done...
Iceman.
~~~~~~
Iceman,
A lot of us have tried to figure out what Gateway was trying to
accomplish and how things ended up as they did. I personally believe
it was a combination of loss of nerve in the face of Microsoft, and
internal Gateway corporate politics. Sad to say but many far reaching
decisions have been made with even less reasoning. The bottom line is
simply - will the company stay profitable?
As you, I will not buy anything Gateway made at this point. Thanks
for the kind words!
Brad
Hi Brad
I have appreciated this resource of amiga news, please keep up the
excellent work. But, I have a question about one of the statements you made
a couple of months ago. It was in response to another readers letter and
concerned other attempts to revive the amiga other than the official Amiga
company. You stated that you didn't think that it was appropriate for this
news-letter to cover the other attempts to revive the Amiga such as the
A.R.P. or the work at QNX. Why not? Doesn't this put all your eggs into one
basket? And also is this the only feasible way that the best solution to
reviving the Amiga will be attained?
Thanks - Jim
~~~~~~
Jim,
First, my apologies for shortening your letter, but space
considerations made that necessary.
You ask a very good question. What I had to do to your letter points
to the answer - we just don't have the space to cover all the
permutations out there. We also don't have the staff or the time. I
wish we did. What we will do is cover the Amiga itself, whatever that
might be going forward, until such time as it seems appropriate to
drop the Amiga entirely in favor of something else - if that ever
happens. (If we do get to that point, we'll share the decision with
you, the readers.)
We will also cover whatever looks to us to be the leading efforts in
the "alternative Amigas" field. And finally, we will also cover to
some extent significant events in all Amiga related areas, where these
events seem to have some real promise for the Amiga community. This is
a pretty complicated mission statement, but we've actually been doing
this for some time and it seems to be working. I have no doubt we
could miss something significant along the way but we'll try to avoid
that. If we do, I'm pretty sure some readers will call our attention
to the event, and we'll then try to get the word to the rest.
Regards,
Brad

While in St Louis last March conversing with Petro, it was stated by
him that, "the shipment of containers from Quikpak of the remaining
parts had been received and inspected. It contained less than 2 dozen
usable 4000 motherboards." Now this was casual conversation between 4
of us, but I have no reason to doubt it's truthfullness. Petro did
make it possible for me to launch the CDTV 3.1 upgrade project, and
that was all verbal between him and me in March of 98.
Ben Deemer "thedoctor" not MD.

Ben,
Thanks for answering Mike's question from a previous issue.
It's very disappointing there weren't more resources available for
making A4000s - I suspect Amiga could still sell quite a few.

There used to be a document on the Amiga Inc. web page
concerning Y2K issues with the Amiga. I haven't been there in quite a
while, so I don't know if it's still there. If it's not still there,
I'm sure there are plenty who know all the gritty details. But...
As far as I can remember, Workbench will have no trouble, but
AmigaDOS itself doesn't handle four digit dates. You might get
invalid date stamps on files. Hopefully the guys at H&P have
addressed this in OS 3.5 or working on it for 3.6(?).
As for the RTC {Real Time Clock, we presume. Brad}, that's another
issue. As I recall, the document stated that the RTC found in the
A2000 is not Y2K compliant. The only possible fix is a software patch
to the OS.
Carlos
~~~~~~
Carlos,
The Y2k page is still available at amiga.com, and has a link right
off the first page after the home page. Anyone with Y2K questions
should refer to that document for information. We didn't notice
anything in particular about the A2000, but the different versions of
the operating system, the clocks, etc., have different considerations.
Thanks for your help in answering a reader's question.
Regards,
Brad
Centsible Software has just recently bought out Paxtron. Right now,
they are in the midst of moving all the inventory from New Jersey to
Berrien Springs, Michigan. It should take about 2-3 weeks to get it
all sorted, catalogued counted, etc. After that, things should be back
in full swing from the new location.
In the meantime, if you have any queries or parts needs, you can
Email Scott (the owner of Centsible Software) at support@centsible.com
{Note: since obtaining this information, we have been informed
"Paxtron" has dropped all Amiga support. We have not yet confirmed
this. Brad}
On October 20, CNET News ran a story by Jim Davis and Michael
Kanellos detailing an agreement reached by Gateway and America On
Line.
The deal will bring an $800 investment in Gateway from AOL. AOL
becomes the Internet service for Gateway customers, and the backbone
of Gateway.net.
The following quote from the story should be of interest to Amigans:
" Many observers have speculated that hardware companies will have to
hook up with service providers to make money on appliances. Under the
new alliance, Gateway will begin to market devices for the "AOL
Anywhere" strategy.
'There's clearly a possibility that Amiga will play a part in this
marketplace,'" according to Jeff Weitzen, chief operating officer of
Gateway.
The long version
Today is there pretty much Amiga software and there is new software
coming but it takes long time and it might result in lots of bugs. We
started to discus whatever there was a way that we could do something
about that problem and after some long hours we found the answer in
TAVP. Now we are in a early stage and we need your support because
that is what this project feeds on. Right now we are contacting all
kinds of Amiga developers about if and what area they need help. We
need people that are prepared to work for no pay but only for the good
will and you dont have to be an expert in whatever you do. We want
everything, coders, musicians and so on because there is always
someone that needs that. We are also contacting different PC
developers about ports to the Amiga that we can sell so the project
might get some money(no of the founders will get any money)that might
be used to different things.
We as mentioned before that this project depends your support and we
hope that as many of you skilled persons out there will join us.
The short version
What is TAVP(The Amiga Volunteer Project)?
The TAVP is an non profit project that will support the development
of new software to Amiga. What you have think of before you join is
that you will not be paid because as mentioned before is this an NON
PROFIT organisation.
Why do we do it?
We are all long time Amiga users and decided that now was the time
for us to active support the Amiga. At the moment there is pretty much
software but the development takes long time but if this project works
it will maybe speed up the development a bit.
How will we do it?
to make this project come true we need you. We need skilled amigians
in any directions and you dont have too be the best coder in the world
you only have to be pretty good. If you are interested go to the join
section and fill out the form and we will contact you or send a mail
to denebis@algonet.se.
What will we do?
As mentioned before we will support the Amiga market by helping
different developers with skilled people but that is not the only
thing that we will do. We will also try to convert PC software to the
Amiga.
Hello Amiga fans,
Just to let you know two items about Amiga 2K, the latest Gateway
Computer Show hosted in St. Louis by Amigan-St. Louis. {Note to
non-Americans: NOT Gateway the company. Gateway in this case comes
originally from St. Louis as "the gateway to the American West" and
later the Gateway Computer Club of St. Louis. Brad}
1. The show dates are Saturday April 1 & Sunday April 2, 2000.
(If you didn't hear, we changed them due to a conflict with NAB.
That's the National Association of Broadcasters show, also in
April.)
2. Petro Tyschtschenko has agreed to attend our show. Petro said
he wouldn't miss a show that we put on.
Please visit our web site at: http://www.amiga-stl.com for more
information as it becomes available.
If you wish to exhibit, please fill out the exhibitor form. We are
accepting exhibitors now. If you cannot do this, or you have a
Robert Jant, chief of a group of former Iwin employees, has announced
today that he together with other former Iwin employees and with the
help of a large German bank has bought back the rights for the
Internet domains www.iwin-corp.com and www.iwin-corp.ge, furthermore
the rights for the name Iwin Corporation and for the projects of the
C-Series and Server computers.
"It was a logical decision" said Robert Jant. "Focke Systems didn't
want to continue development of the C-Series and Servers and didn't
want to sell them either.
"This is the reason why we have decided to try to buy back the rights
on them. We were working very hard for a long time on these projects
and didn't want to see them frozen. We know that it will be a very
hard way to finish the projects and bring them into the stores.
We won't bring these computers into the stores as it was initially
planned, but we are sure they will be successful."
Iwin Corporation will open again on the 15 of November 1999 and will
also ship the first computers on this date to dealers. On the 15 of
November, Iwin Corporation will also again be reachable by phone, fax
and email.
{Since this press release was issued, Iwin sites are indeed back in
operation. The computers now include something called the G-MCC, I-MCC
and iPhantom computers all of which reference Amiga compatibility. It
is unclear what the Amiga compatibility actually is - it appears to be
some sort of software emulation, perhaps UAE. Brad}
Iwin Corporation has been split into three independent firms.
1. The Software business was sold to ``Focke Systems'' and will now
be fully integrated into this firm.
2. The Consulting business was also sold to ``Focke Systems'' and
will be ``Focke Consulting'' in the future.
3. The Hardware business was first also sold to ``Focke Systems'' but
then bought back by some former Iwin employees. This firm will now be
called ``Iwin Corporation''. This website will be the future site of
this firm. The new firm will start business on the 15th of November
1999 and will sell various graphic workstations based on x86 and PPC
technology as well as server computers.
For all people asking about the announced ``Amiga compatible''
computers, please use these contact possibilities in the meanwhile:
Either by FAX in the US: (208)-279-6497. Your question will be
answerred within two work days. Please understand that currently we
cannot answer any questions by email or phone. On the 15th of November
this site will have changed to the new Iwin site and will contain a
toll-free (US and Germany only!) number for your questions regarding
the Amiga compatible workstations and all other hardware products.
If you need help or sales support for former Iwin software products,
please refer to Focke Systems.
The Campaign to Open Source AmigaOS is a coalition of individuals,
organisations and user groups from the Amiga, Open Source and Linux
O P E N L E T T E R T O T H E P R E S .
Open Letter to Amiga, Inc. President Thomas Schmidt
October 18, 1999
Dear Mr. Schmidt:
First of all, we want to congratulate you on your new position as
president of Amiga. We are sure that you have many exciting plans for
the future of Amiga, Inc. and that we can expect many new innovations
from your company in the months and years ahead. This is indeed an
exciting time for the computer industry, a time of great upheaval and
change, and holds much promise for the success and growth of ambitious
upstart companies like Amiga, Inc.
We have been following the recent events at Amiga, Inc. with great
interest. We feel, like many, that the recent resignation of Jim
Collas was unfortunate. Many people in the community trusted Collas to
successfully lead the company into the future. Wherever he is now, and
whatever he is doing, we in the community wish him well.
But this is not a time to be looking back on events of the past. It
is a time to be focusing on what lies directly ahead in the future of
the computing industry. We feel our organisation is unique in the
Amiga community. We have tried to understand both the needs of the
Amiga community, balanced against the needs of Amiga, Inc.
We do not believe, like some in the community, that the wishes of the
Amiga community and the needs of Amiga, Inc. are mutually exclusive.
Likewise, we do not believe that success of Amiga, Inc. as a company
is mutually exclusive with satisfying the needs and expectations of
the Amiga community.
Our group was formed with a simple goal: to find a
mutually-satisfactory solution to current tensions that exist between
many in the community and Amiga, Inc. - a solution that would be
satisfactory, indeed beneficial, to both groups.
We believe, after several weeks of discussion and exchanging of
ideas, that we have found such a solution. We believe that this
solution is to open-source the Amiga operating system.
We present our reasons for believing this in our report, "AmigaOS:
The Case for Open Source," a copy of which should have been sent to
you alongside this letter, by Amiga Vice President Mr. Petro
Tyschtschenko.
Our report is the result of several weeks of work and consultation
with many individuals in the Amiga, Open Source and Linux communities,
including famous open-source advocate Eric Raymond, who acted as a
consultant for Netscape on their open-source strategy.
We believe our report presents a powerful case that open-sourcing the
Amiga operating system would bring many advantages, and future
business opportunities, to Amiga, Inc. and would at the same time
satisfy the needs of the Amiga community for continuity and continuous
improvement of the Amiga operating system.
We therefore respectfully submit our report, "AmigaOS: The Case for
Open Source," for your review and consideration.
We, of course, do not expect the report to fully and complete answer
each and every question you may have on the subject of open-source, or
why we believe it is the ideal solution to the current volatile Amiga
situation - but we do, however, believe it is a good start, and we
hope that you will be made curious enough by the contents of the
report, to establish a dialogue with us on the matter, and to consider
working with us in an attempt to find a mutually satisfactory solution
to the current Amiga situation. Your nomination to president of a
young, ambitious, innovative upstart company like Amiga, Inc. could
not have come at a better time. The next several months and years will
be an exciting time to be a player in the ever-changing fast-paced
computing industry.
Whatever direction Amiga takes, we wish you and Amiga, Inc. every
success in the future.
We look forward to your response.
Respectfully,
Steve Crietzman (president@savetheamiga.org.uk)
We have now our own webserver: www.project-imp.org, or for german
About Project IMP: Project IMP had been founded just after Jim Collas
left Amiga and the AmigaMCC had been canceled. It is our intention to
keep the Amiga platform alive and give it a future. This goal can only
be reached by making the operating system and the hardware open
our own, free OS which will be as much as possible compatible to the
existing AmigaOS as a basing for further developments.
We will support any group or project that is working in that
direction in order to organize and bundle all developments. If you
Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany 19. October 1999 :
OPEN OFFER FROM GTI GRENVILLE TRADING INTERNATIONAL GMBH, SPECIALISED
INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTOR OF AMIGA PRODUCTS
GTI Grenville Trading International GmbH, the German-based
international distributor of Amiga products today made an open offer
to those manufacturers of Amiga products looking for increased sales
worldwide.
OFFER TO MANUFACTURERS OF AMIGA PRODUCTS LOOKING FOR INCREASED
INTERNATIONAL SALES
GTI Grenville Trading International GmbH distributes Amiga products
(main emphasis - software) to Amiga re-sellers on an international
basis. Our customers are based throughout Europe, and in North America
and Australasia. With 12 years of experience in the Amiga market, and
having built up a ongoing network of clients on a wholesale-only basis
(we do not sell to end-users) over the last five years, GTI Grenville
Trading International GmbH is in a unique position to ensure
availability of Amiga products to Amiga businesses in many countries.
Currently well over 250 Amiga products are listed and distributed by
GTI Grenville Trading International GmbH.
As the market decline of the Amiga has continued, dealers have found
it increasingly difficult to source and stock Amiga products.
Manufacturers have found it well nigh impossible to supply the
thinly-spread network of Amiga dealers with product.
GTI Grenville Trading International GmbH now makes the following
offer to manufacturers of Amiga products worldwide.
We will stock your Amiga products on a turnkey basis ! This basically
means that we are prepared to list and sell Amiga products on your
behalf to our network of Amiga dealers on an international basis.
Under this scheme, we are willing to price products according to
manufacturers preferences, and remit proceeds of sales minus an agreed
commission fee back to manufacturers on a regular basis.
We offer producers the possibility of reaching a large number of
Amiga dealers with the minimum of paperwork and fuss. We are happy to
list Amiga products and sell on your behalf without ANY minimum
quantity - thus enabling even specialised products to obtain an
international listing and succeed by their own quality. This scheme is
particularly suited to North American manufacturers looking for
increased sales of their products to the European Amiga trade and
thereby to European Amiga users.
Additionally we are able to offer support to those manufacturers
offering their products directly to end-users through the internet.
Our logistics facility offers a centralised European warehousing for
your products, and delivery to end-users on your behalf throughout
Europe. We are also able to supply invoicing, cash-collection,
marketing, and translation services as and when required. This scheme
is particularly suited to North American manufacturers looking for
increased sales of their products through E-Commerce to end-users
throughout Europe.
We would like to invite producers of Amiga products looking for
increased product sales to take advantage of one or both of the above
schemes and contact us with a view to expanding their market presence
on an international basis.
Hi Amiga-Fans!
Here are some news about recent changes on the GAUHPIL, the
"Geographical Amiga Users Home Page Internet List", which holds
currently more than 850 homepages of Amiga users!
The GAUHPIL has moved again. Now it is free of any commercial banners
- at the 7th URL!!!
The redirector-URL is still valid. You should never have problems to
find the GAUHPIL at:
http://GAUHPIL.home.pages.de/
During the last months, I did some checking and changing. I found the
first ever Amiga user in Antarctica! And now I added the 35th country:
Philippines! Some names are new on the list, some others disappeared.
You find some of the latter on the Lost Links List.
There is also one totally new page: the New Links List, which shows
recently added/changed names on the GAUHPIL.
If you didn't visit the GAUHPIL in the recent time, you might be
interested in the References List and the Related Sites page.
Please note, that my e-mail address has also slightly changed. Please
update your addressbooks now, to the following address:
dknoll@myokay.net
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, comments and hints in all
those years!
Special thanks to those of you that linked the GAUHPIL on your site.
You are listed on the "Hall of Fame" (see: References & Banners page)
Opus Magellan 5.82 with OS 3.5 Support to be Shown at Cologne
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
GPSoftware is proud to demonstrate its continuing support for the
Amiga with the release of a new version of Directory Opus Magellan
which supports the new palette mapped icon system of OS 3.5.
The product will be demonstrated on the Schatztruhe stand at the
Cologne show, November 12-14th November 1999 by Dr Greg Perry.
Opus Magellan is available world-wide from good Amiga dealers and
GPSoftware distributors. Or you may support the developers by
purchasing direct.
Free Update Patch available.
OS 3.5 causes some superficial problems with earlier versions of Opus
because of the new palette mapped icon system which is not
transparently compatibility with earlier programs. With the help of
Olaf Barthel, we have now added support for the new V44 icon library
in OS 3.5.
A free update patch from Opus 5.81 is available from our web site at
Here's an update on what has been happening since we made the
announcement to release the QNX development system to Amigans:
How is the Phase 5/QNX alliance proceeding?
We are currently waiting for boards from Phase 5. Due to the delay we
don't expect to have a Phase 5 solution this year. We will continue to
provide status updates as we know more.
How will the beta program be handled?
Historically, we have always had small beta programs because it
allows us to spend more time with each beta developer to better
address their issues and suggestions. We plan to do the same with this
upcoming beta. We will expand the group quickly as we progress.
The first beta release for the initial smaller group is planned for
early November. This beta will be a full-featured self-hosted
development environment. Over the ensuing months, we will be updating
the betas with more tools, drivers, and applications.
What will the beta development package include?
Our first beta is targeted at x86-based computers.
The beta will contain:
o QNX Neutrino operating system, including tools and drivers.
o Photon microGUI windowing system, including a suite of
applications, drivers, and development tools
o x86-hosted development environment for x86 targets (compiler will
be GCC with GBD for debugging)
o Online documentation
N E W P I C A S S O 9 6 V E R S I O N
Version 2.0, November 16th 1999:
* version bump due to large improvements.
* first Draco Altais support.
o *NEW FEATURE*: added functionality to patch the most common native
Amiga chipset screen modes to use a Picasso96 board to ease use
and installation of Picasso96 on systems that don't have a native
Amiga chipset (like the Macrosystem Draco) or that have no monitor
attached to the native chip set signal connector or that don't
have a flicker fixer and no 15 kHz capable monitor. To enable
this feature add the tool type "FakeNativeModes=Yes" to the
monitor driver of one of your cards (defaults to "Yes" with the
Draco Altais and "No" for all other cards) and remove all native
Amiga monitor drivers (!). Now, when the system uses one of the
native Amiga screen modes (currently only LowRes, HighRes and
SuperHighRes and their interlaced counter parts), a 640x480 31kHz
60Hz screen mode on the graphics card will be used. Note: this
mode is not configurable and it is not intended to be, because
you should use real Picasso96 screen mode IDs whenever you can.
Its only intention is to get the workbench on a VGA compatible
screen when the current screenmode.prefs contains an invalid mode
id. May also be useful for some (stupid) programs that default to
a custom screen with a native Amiga screen mode after
installation.
o *NEW FEATURE*: software sprite routines will use on-board blitter
when available. Therefore boards which have a blitter reserve
about 12 KB of their memory for sprite and back buffers. This
might affect the size of the largest screen that can be opened in
some systems (mostly with 1MB cards).
o *NEW FEATURE*: alerts (Alert(), DisplayAlert(),
TimedDisplayAlert()) now are rendered into the front most screen
if it is a Picasso96 one. After termination of the alert, the
display is restored.
o *NEW FEATURE*: board drivers can now prevent the loading and
attaching of settings files. Useful for the UAEgfx driver that
creates its own modes and cannot use standard settings
definitions at all.
o *NEW FEATURE*: new environment variable "DisableAmigaBlitter"
which even forces blits on standard planar Amiga bitmaps to be
performed by the CPU. Set to 'yes' to enable this feature. If you
don't use native Amiga screens, this could improve some operations
on fast processors. On the other hand, Amiga screens will be
slower. Defaults to 'No'.
o *NEW FEATURE*: new environment variable "PlanesToFast" which when
set to 'Yes' will allocate planar bitplanes to fast memory except
when the caller requested a visible or standard bitmap. Defaults
to 'No'.
o *NEW FEATURE* user can now allocate private bitmaps that do not
need to be locked. Especially useful for programs that need
temporary fast memory bitmaps for rendering.
Unity Overview
Abstract:
Unity alias Zorro1200 is an Autoconfig(TM) board for Amiga. It makes
it possible to use Melody1200 and other expansions initially done for
A1200's clock port for ZorroII/III Computers.
A special property is variable bus speed. It's possible to run
expansions nearly as slow as in A1200 but it's even possible to go up
to twice that speed known from old Zorro boards like Melody-Z2 or
Prelude.
Why it's a must have:
Unity together with:
o Unity-Net 10 results in an efficient, small low-priced 10Base-2 or
10Base-T solution for Amiga different to other solutions Full
Duplex-Mode (20Mbps) is supported.
o Unity-Net 100 probably is the first and only 10/100BaseTx solution
for Amiga. It's unique!
o Melody1200 gives the final move for Melody 1200. being the market
leader regarding audio precission + bandwidth inside every Amiga. Load
is much lower compared to the traditional clock-port connection at
A1200. This even means there is room for a Multichannel variant
Melody1200. Do you want ous to do such solution? Tell ous!
o Twister1200 primary results in higher throughput. The mayor topic
is having a real Serial High-End Interface at Zorro-Amiga by not
wasting a Zorro slot (since there is the possibility of having an
on-board interface that option should be taken first loosing no
connector). If there is anybody out there who likes to have three very
fast serial interfaces this is possible now.
o combinations of these and future boards gives maximum flexibility
by using only one Zorro slot
Features:
o Zorro2 Autoconfig(TM)
o Up to 3.5 MB/s bus bandwidth to CPU causing low system load, only
o two connectors for Melody1200, Twister1200 and other boards
o 16bits connector intended for Networkoption Unity-Net 10 or 100.
Board is prepared (production time) for mounting further devices:
o Twister1200-style HighSpeed Serial Interface Onboard
o xxxx Interface Onboard (secret up to the show;-)
Requirements:
o Amiga mit Zorro Slot
o oder Amiga 1200 mit Bus-Erweiterung
Status:
o very early prototype was presented at Computer'98, Cologne
o final design presented at Home Electronics World in Cologne 1999
You wanted it here it is.
Mikro Mortal Tennis aims to become the craziest game ever in the
videogame history!! As you can guess from the title, it is basically
founded on tennis game, but its goal is to eliminate your opponents,
not simply to defeat them!!!
To this purpose, players might make use of loads of Mortal-Kombat and
Street-Fighter-like special moves, in addition to many others,
directly taken from lots of famous videogames or films. Besides, there
are bombs, Fire'n'forget rockets, heat-seeking missiles at their
complete disposal... The game boasts an amusing animated intro which
will explain the reason of such a strange tournamnet - by the way,
your order is to climb a high mountain, just like the second episode
of the Mortal Kombat saga; moreover, it features several victory and
defeat pictures and an even more crazy final sequence than the intro!!
Players can choose their characters from a range of twelve different
guys, each distinguished with typical characteristics, which can be
edited in the proper menu. Beyond every human conceiving, the game is
spangled with lots of mad things, like referee-slaughtering, animals
which will appear in the field, VIPs which will perform during the
match, and a mysterious tapir named Fart (main character of the game,
as you can be able to guess from the introduction) which will perform
in a number of funny anims.. At the beginning of the match the players
will enter the field and choose the field in which play with an
incredible money trowing!! Of course, the sporting side of the game is
not to be under-stimated.. You'll always have to win your match!! From
this point of view, the game is classicaly structured: pitch type,
number of sets to win, type of game (single, double or training),as
well as the type of tournament to join; you'll be able to select, in
addition to the above-mentioned MK-style tournament, an UNFRIENDLY
tournament in which up to eight human players are allowed to take
part, or a full season, where player will have to win as much as
possible to travel all over the world, and in order to buy weapons and
points which will help him in his short career. It's possible to save
and subsequently restore your season from disc as well as every change
made in the players editing menu, where you're able to change the
name, the characteristics and the shirt colour of all the
characters...
Well, that's all, there's nothing left but wishing you to enjoy Mikro
Mortal Tennis! Mikro Mortal Tennis supports all Amiga models with at
least 1 Meg of Ram.
Mikro Mortal Tennis authors are:
Coding: Davide Mancusi - Marco Pacifico
Graphics: Marco Pacifico - Sergio Rocco
Additional graphics: Enrico Zerbo
Musics & sfx: Alex Ascione
Storyboard: Valerio Massari - Stefano Gualeni
The game is expeceted to retail around the 15 ukp mark.
Light Force News
Andreas Hippauf schreibt:
Wir haben ein Programmierteam mit dem Namen "strange worlds" gegründet,
(der Name resultiert aus unserer Absicht, ganze virtuelle Welten auf dem
Amiga zu erschaffen). Unser erstes Projekt "Newtron" wurde damit noch
einen Schritt professioneller. Mit dem Namen kamen auch zwei neue
Mitglieder an Bord:
Costel Mincea wird als unser Grafiker für das Intro und die
Zwischenanimationen verantwortlich sein. Oliver Schuler sollte bereits
durch den Amiga-Port von glTron Vielen ein Begriff sein. Er wird uns
u.a. mit 3D-Berechnungsfunktionen der Normalen-Vektoren (benötigen wir
für die Lichteffekte und Texturen) unterstützen.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass das Projekt Newtron nun einen neuen Namen hat:
als fertiges Spiel wird es LIGHT FORCE heißen und voraussichtlich auf CD
erscheinen.
Seit der Namensänderung existiert die alte Internetseite nicht mehr. Die
Informationen zu LIGHT FORCE wurden komplett in unsere LA-Workbench
integriert und sind unter dem Titellink abrufbar. Dort ist auch eine
neue Demo-Version erhältlich! In der Demo gibt es jetzt wahlweise 1
oder 2-Spieler Modus, verschiedene Perspektiven,
Kollisionsabfragen, verbesserte Steuerung (v.a. die Maussteuerung!),
leider immer noch ziemlich dumme Gegner, der Punktestand wird bereits
gezählt usw.! Einfach mal ausprobieren!
Wir müssen aber leider darauf hinweisen, dass bisher nur sehr wenig
EMails zu Newtron bei uns eingegangen sind! Wir hoffen, dass das
Feedback mit der neuen Demoversion besser wird. Solange sich nicht
mindestens 200 Amiga-User ernsthaft für das Spiel interessieren, ist es
nicht sicher, ob wir das Spiel wirklich fertigstellen werden/wollen. In
diesen unsicheren Zeiten ist das Feedback der User das wirklich Wichtige
an einem solchen Projekt! Je mehr Leute uns sagen, was Ihnen gefallen
hat (oder was nicht), was sie noch gerne drin haben möchten, desto mehr
werden wir motiviert, all diese Ideen einzubauen und weiterzumachen!
Support für Twister 1200 (DCE)
Jörn Plewka schreibt in d.c.s.a.m.:
Ich weise wegen einiger Nachfragen auf folgenden Sachverhalt hin:
Seit über einem Jahr hat keiner der Entwicklervereinigung Katodev (mehr)
Rechte an Twister 1200, außer die Schaltung für andere Designs
weiterverwenden zu dürfen. Andere "Katodev" Designs befinden sich
ebenfalls im Prozess des Besitzwechsels. Für den Anwender hat das
aber ebenfalls keine negativen Folgen.
Einzelne Personen leisten selbstständig und offiziell Support für die
Twister 1200 Karten von DCE, weshalb sich Twister Mk2 auf der
KatoDev-Webseite findet.
Da User (wie wir auch) allgmein schlechte Erfahrungen mit Support
gesammelt haben dürften, haben sich die Beteiligten entschlossen,
den Support direkt aus erster Hand durch Entwickler/Ingenieur
abzuwickeln!
Für den Anwender wirkt support@katodev.de
als einfach zu merkenden Anlaufpunkt bei Fragen. Intern wird die Nachricht
abhängig von Betreff und Inhalt automatisch weitergeleitet. Wir haben
übrigens weitere Sammeladressen eingerichtet.
Da ein Entwickler zwecks Effizienz nicht permanent seine Arbeit
unterbrechen sollte bzw. gar nicht erreichbar ist, weisen wir mochmals darauf
hin, uns möglichst nicht anzurufen, sondern Email, WWW und Fax zu
nutzen. Sollte telefonieren mal notwendig sein, kann das normalerweise
erst nach 18.00 Uhr geschehen (das ist zumindest auch günstiger). Das Risiko
besteht aber, dass gerade der falsche Entwickler bereitsitzt.
Operation: Counterstrike
Nachdem der Name des Spiels vor einiger Zeit in "Siberian Sun" umbenannt
wurde, hat sich Blue Black Solution nun endgültig entschieden, dass Spiel
doch mit dem ursprünglichen Namen "Operation: Counterstrike" zu betiteln.
Weiter wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, das Spiel nur noch als
Grafikkarten-Version zu entwickeln, die AGA-Version wird es nicht geben.
Auch FastRAM unter 16 MB wird nicht mehr unterstützt. Neben der Windows 95
und Apple MAC-Version wird es für AMIGA nur eine 68K-Version für 060-er-Prozessoren
geben, wobei auch PPC-Versionen geplant sind.
KOSH [Kommunity Orientated Software Hardware]
Summary
Inclusive of Dates: 25th September 1999 to 20th November 1999
Number: 028
Mailing List: kosh-general@iconimaging.net
I'm happy to receive comments on this summary (and corrections if I have made
mistakes). Email me (Bridge) at kosh-scribe@mythicz.u-net.com
In the mailing list these last few weeks, the following items were discussed.
a)
Subject: Formalising past KOSH discussions
Summary of debate: It was discussed at length that there is a need to look over
past debates on items relevant to KOSH and to present these
in a more formal manner. One of the main reasons for this is
in order to prevent information relevant to KOSH from being
lost in historical records. Instead we would like to take
these ideas and cement them into positive feedback for the
KOSH project as a whole as an aid to providing further
direction for KOSH.
In order to accomplish this, it was suggested that voluntary
Working Groups be organised, each of which would present a
document on a selected topic - based mainly (but not
exclusively) on the summaries and other documents from the
various mailing lists.
Alternatively a more fluid approach could be used in which
each person who was interested in contributing to a document
on a particular subject would hold the document for a week
or two at a time, add their own ideas and correct the
previous holder's mistakes (changes being discussed and
agreed to by both parties), then pass it on to the next
person. When passed around a turn without getting any more
changes, the document would be trimmed, signed and posted on
the ML where a few additional changes could take place
before it is put on the website.
It was suggested that working groups can on occasion be
inefficient due to large numbers of people being involved.
Therefore perhaps 3-6 people should be the limit per topic.
A small group of KOSHans is looking into this.
b)
Subject: KOSH Introductory Website
Summary of debate: Marcus Petersson has written some material for an
introductory website to KoshOS (thanks Marcus) - if anyone
has any information which would be useful for this worthy
project please contact Marcus via the ML.
c)
Subject: Connection troubles resolved
Summary of debate: Between the last summary and this one there have been a
couple of instances when access to
kosh-general@iconimaging.net vanished. Thanks to Jason
Radford for putting the bits back in place. Certainly for
the last few weeks there have been no connection problems
(to my knowledge).
d)
Subject: GPL
Summary of debate: The idea of the Gnu Public Licence was discussed in
depth. It was suggested that KOSH should be put into GPL,
and this received a mixed response. It was stated that
distributing GPL items along with private items is OK as
long as clear notices are maintained in the appropriate
places.
It was further stated that any software programs
including or derived from GPL source must be covered by the
GPL itself. That doesn't mean that whole suites would become
GPL, but would mean that the relevant subsystem would.
It was felt by some that GPL could be contrary to the aims
of KOSH and therefore should be avoided.
However there is also the LGPL or Library Gnu Public Licence
which applies to libraries. This licence exist to guarantee
that the user still has the ability to modify the library
under LGPL but not the product using the library (although
the product can be GPL).
You can charge for distributing LGPL and GPL software
as long as this is limited to things like covering media and
postage costs for example.
See http://www.gnu.org for more information on Gnu.
This debate (as with many) is set to continue.
e)
Subject: KOSH Contacts database
Summary of debate: Suggested was a contacts database for KOSH that would
include all "known" KOSHans, others who have a slight
interest, developers, newspapers, magazines, etc.
This would be useful in two ways. Firstly (and obviously)
that it would enable easy dissemination of information
relevant to KOSH. Secondly it would be a tool to demonstrate
that KOSH is definitely alive and well.
Part of this information is available at
http://www.iconimaging.net/kosh/kommunity/developers.html
f)
Subject: K and C
Summary of debate: For those that may be wondering, "Kommunity" on the KOSH
website is now "Community" due to Babelfish translation
problems. KOSH is still KOSH and not COSH as a COSH involves
to clubbing people.
g)
Subject: "KOSH UK" meet.
Summary of debate: John Chandler and Greg Webb and I (Bridge Deady) seem to
have become "KOSH UK" in that we are all ahem in the UK,
are thinking of KOSH at World of Amiga 2000 in the UK and
we also recently took part in a KOSH Q&A session via IRC
hosted at the Cologne Fair in Germany.
If anyone else is in the UK (or abroad and is willing to
fly over) and is interested in a "get together" sometime
please let us know as this is something we are thinking of.
h)
Subject: User Interface Website
Summary of debate: See http://www.iarchitect.com/mshame.htm which covers
examples of good and bad user interface design.
i)
Subject: KOSH Virtual Credits and taxation
Summary of debate: A query was raised concerning tax laws in countries such as
the UK and the KOSH Virtual Credits scheme. In the UK
(amongst other countries presumably) virtual credits would
be liable for tax but that tax would have to paid in UK
pounds sterling.
It was discussed that if sales are made to EC countries
above a certain threshold (apr £70,000 p.a. for the UK) then
the seller must register for VAT in that country.
This is something to bare in mind but won't become an issue
for a while yet.
j)
Subject: KOSH web site updated
Summary of debate: The KOSH website at http://kosh.convergence.org and
http://www.iconimaging,net/kosh amongst others has been
updated a number of times since the last summary. Feel free
to have a quick browse.
k)
Subject: EROS goes GPL
Summary of debate: EROS have gone GPL. See:
http://www.eros-os.org/ and for a discussion on this,
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/10/28/0151212&mode=nes
l)
Subject: Licencing parts of KOSH
Summary of debate: It was suggested that we could make a simple policy over
licensing of our software. Whenever any module is withdrawn
from our distribution it could be put on a countdown for a
fixed period. We have the duration of that period to reverse
the decision and put it back in under our own terms, but
once that period has expired, the source and binary are
released under a simple freeware licence.
A similar idea was previously discussed in that software
developed for KOSH could be given a particular licence that
stated the software would lapse into the public domain if
certain criteria had not been fulfilled.
At the very least the sources released would be of
educational use and would hopefully spark off further
development. This idea of software licencing received a
favourable response from those that commented on it.
It was further suggested that some sort of "auction" of old
code could take place to generate funds for KOSH (and the
author of the code) before it was placed into a free-ish
-ware state. This could however allow large corporations to
take over KOSH and therefore a limit on the size of bids
would be needed. Even so this could cause problems.
If an "auction" was implemented then to prevent corporations
from buying code and then leaving it dormant a clause in the
auction could be that if a new version of the code updated
from the original is not forthcoming after a specified time
then the code reverts to being the property of KOSH.
Overall the idea of code becoming freeware under a licence
as discussed initially received a more favourable response
than that of an "auction" based system. None of this is
supposed to remove the rights programmers have over their
own code.
It was then suggested that a version of the Mozilla Public
Licence may be appropriate. This allows retention of
copyright but opens up the potential for others to develop
the code.
m)
Subject: KAROS (KOSH hosted on AROS)
Summary of debate: A discussion on hosting KOSH on AROS was held. At least
two ideas were forthcoming:
1) AROS can either run standalone or on another OS such as
KOSH (once KOSH itself is running of course),
2) AROS could be used as a basic services provider for
KOSH allowing us to implement other things without having to
spend a large amount of time getting a filesystem, device
drivers, etc written first.
This is not to detract from the thoughts on hosting KOSH on
Linux, AmigaOS, MacOS, Win32, etc. but merely adds another
possibility.
AROS is available from: ftp://www.aros.org/pub/aros/
n)
Subject: Distribution format
Summary of debate: It was suggested that KOSH could be distributed on DVD
rather than CD which would then enable a program on the DVD
to create a hosted-KOSH CD for any given OS. This would
enable one DVD to contain versions of KOSH for a large
number of systems.
However it is hoped that KOSH will be compact enough not to
require a DVD for distribution! It was also mentioned that
DVD is still not commmonplace everywhere.
o)
Subject: Linux, GPL and KOSH
Summary of debate: It was queried as to whether an OS running hosted through
Linux automatically GPL'd? While the LGPL only covers the
module concerned, the GPL infects everything it touches.
p)
Subject: KOSH featured at the Cologne Fair.
Summary of debate: KOSH were kindly invited by Hendrik Hoener of Amiga UGN
Germany to take a slot in an IRC conference that they are
hosting during the Cologne fair. We were represented by Greg
Webb, John Chandler and myself (Bridge Deady). We were
slotted in directly after Petro Tyschtschenko of Amiga which
provided us with a prominent mid-afternoon position.
The log of the session, while being a little bit difficult
to follow in places (due to three people answering different
questions at the same time) can be found at
http://ugn.amiga.org/events/hew99.shtml - (Scribe's note: if
it becomes unavailable, email me and I'll send you a copy).
The main issue that came to light was that a lot of people
simply did not know what KOSH is. We fielded a lot of
questions to this effect. We gave plenty of references to
the website and this ML as well as providing both short and
lengthy descriptions.
Various other items of great relevance were discussed - and
it was mentioned to those online at the time that KOSH will
consider these. There will be a threaded summary of the
proceedings available from myself in the near future which
we can all digest.
q)
Subject: Formalising documentation of past discussions
Summary of debate: Greg Webb, John Chandler and Marcus Petersson have been
discussing a proposal for a system to make it easier for
more than one person to work on a document. If you would
like to be involved in this please contact one of the above
via the ML.
r)
Subject: KOSH IRC
Summary of debate: A KOSH IRC session in the nearish future was proposed. This
is under consideration.
s)
Subject: KOSH at World of Amiga 2000
Summary of debate: This has been suggested on numerous occasions and hopefully
we will have more news on this idea soon.
t)
Subject: Protecting systems with an "undo" feature
Summary of debate: It was suggested that
http://www.powerquest.com/en/secondchance/index.html and
http://www.go-back.co.uk/start.htm should interest people as
they do this. GoBack may be a better model to work from as
it uses it's own partition structure to store the data,
while SecondChance just uses ordinary files which need
clearing out and cannot be so easily overwritten if the user
needs the space. (ps)
Erste Fast-Z2 Karte für das Z4-Board
Jens Schönfeld schreibt:
Als erste Karte, die den Fast-Z2 Mode des neuen Z4-Boards unterstützt, gibt
es jetzt den "Buddha Flash Maxxelerate". Das einstellbare Timing ist
weggefallen, es werden also nur noch moderne Festplatten unterstützt.
Die Performance gegenüber einem "normalem" Buddha Flash ist ca. 80% höher.
Ein A1200 mit Apollo 68040-25 macht knapp 3,1 MB pro Sekunde, was in etwa
auch die Performance sein dürfte, die ein 060 oder PPC Board erreicht. Ich
erwarte mit einem 68030 bei 40Mhz knapp 5MB pro Sekunde, genauere Messwerte
gibt es im Laufe der Woche.
Wer seinen Buddha updaten lassen möchte, muss ihn einschicken.
Der Preis für das Update ist 35,- DM plus Versandkosten.
Fusion-PPC Status
Paul Lesurf (Blittersoft)
hatte ein längeres Gespräch mit Jim Drew zu Fusion-PPC. Der
aktuelle Status ist folgender:
- Wie bereits bekanntgegeben wurde Fusion-PPC für den Amiga nicht
wie geplant am 20. November veröffentlicht.
- Die Fusion-PPC Entwicklung für den Amiga wird normal
fortgesetzt werden.
- Jim Drew hat erklärt, daß das Projekt weit fortgeschritten ist
und fertiggestellt werden wird und das alles versucht wird, um
noch vor Weihnachten eine Version zu veröffentlichen.
- Wie im Vertrag über die Vorrauszahlung stehend kann jede Kundin
und jeder Kunde den Vertrag schriftlich bei Microcode-Solutions
kündigen. Die Rückzahlung erfolgt innerhalb von 30 Tagen
nach Eingang der Kündigung. Dieser Vorgang war deutlich auf
dem Webseiten vor dem Formular zur Online-Bestellung beschrieben
Paul Lesurf bittet alle darum ein wenig Geduld aufzubringen, bis
Fusion-PPC für den Amiga erschienen ist. Jim und Joe bemühen sich
darum ein exzellentes Paket für PPC-Amiga auszuliefern und es wird,
laut Paul Lesurf, die Wartezeit wert sein.
Koordinator für AmigaOS GeekGadgets gesucht
Da Fred Fish seit längeren die Zeit und Motivation fehlt, sich
um die AmigaOS-Version von Geek Gadgets zu kümmern, wird für
die Amiga-Version ein/e neue/r Koordinator/in gesucht.
Wer Lust hat diesen Posten zu übernehmen, sollte über gute organisatorische
und kommunikative Fähigkeiten verfügen, ein aktives Mitglied der
Amiga-Community sein und genügend Zeit haben, um sich um alle
Aspekte von AmigaOS GG kümmern zu können.
Zusätzlich wird jemand gesucht, die/der regelmäßig einen neuen
Snapshot generieren kann. Hierfür sollte man über einen Amiga
mit 68060er verfügen, da ein 68040 mehrere Tage zum Compilieren
aller Sourcen benötigt und sich dadurch die Erstellung eines
Snapshots über mehrere Wochen hinziehen kann. Auch wenn man die
meiste Zeit über nicht aktiv in die Generierung eingreifen braucht.
HEW'99-Report von Caghan Demirci
Der Artikel ist sehr ausführlich und enthält für den einen oder
anderen noch die eine oder andere neue Information.
Zum Beispiel könnte Epic "Simon the Sorcerer 2" Anfang nächsten
Jahres für den Amiga herausbringen, wenn mindestens 500 Vorbestellungen
eingehen.
Nachtrag (29.11.1999): lokale Kopie ergänzt.
HEW '99 REPORT
Author: Caghan Demirci
I dashingly rushed my way into the Home Electronics World at noon on Saturday, after a
steady march across the Rhein and the Koln fairgrounds, only to find that my vision was blocked
by a barrage of irrelevant "home electronics" stands, who would gladly sell you their PC
hardware and software ranging from the odd SCSI cable to the slick driving wheel for some
bargain price. Wrong floor? Indeed nay, as the Amiga stands were to be found gathered
together at the further half of the hall, with no clear separation between the two partitions. In the
very middle towered the Amiga Inc. stand in all ist grandeur, watching over the throbbing crowd
and the various Amiga dealers on its four sides. Allegedly the Amiga section is more shrunk
than in the previous years, but the aisles have been widened to make strolling easier; even so,
there was always a bunch before every stand, talking, commenting, arguing and finally
shopping. Annex, now down to three people, danced twice during the day on a small stage
placed suspiciously close to the entrance, enjoying keen attention from every HEW visitor, so
much so that many people watched the show while standing. In addition to "Keep the
Momentum Going," they also danced to the German premiere of "The Spirit," quite an
improvement on the former song, I might add. The elastic girls even cheered up the front row to
get up and swing their hips, and funnily all this got recorded on somebody's personal video
camera here and there. Applause was plenty, and after the show ended, smiling faces could be
overheard asking, "So will you be an Amiga-user again, Jon?", and grinning faces answering
"Not a user perhaps, but a spectator definitely."
Get lucky, and you might even buy some Amiga souvenirs off these eye-catching Annex chaps
at the central stand. Also catching the surprised eye of many an attentive visitor were the three
wackos strolling around with their Iwin T-Shirts which shouted "Rotten tomatoes onto here!"
These guys really don't take their sweet lives seriously. Bernhard, one of this jolly batch that is
responsible for the Iwin website, never did hesitate to draw his Iwin(TM) lighter upon the
oncoming mob, whose smart heads were more than anxious to run for their lives as they took it
to be a flame thrower running on flammable "vapour." No sir, Bernhard wouldn't listen to the
two Dutchmen warning him through clenched teeth of his imminent demise. "It is supposed to
be a big joke," chuckles Bernhard, who obviously had some bombastic fun making the Iwin site.
"I mailed Martin Steinbach about the Iwin company and asked 'You got T-Shirts?'. 'Yeah, we
do.' 'How much do they cost?' '28 DM. What's your address?' 'Here it is. Send me a batch, and
some lighters.' 'Here you go.' - finished!" He would also claim that from the beginning, the site
was nothing to be taken seriously, but having said that, it seemed to me Bernhard was
reproached more often than he had thought. He was ecstatic about the whole thing. Apparently
the reason why the community can't take a "joke" these days is that as an entity, we have become
rather irritable after the chain of recent disappointments and broken promises. It was then
natural that the majority of fans thought the Iwin lads had bad intentions.
Having the Iwin case cleared for all with a smile on everyone's lips, I was itching to browse the
crowded Amiga stands around the hall, various and sundry. Amiga Inc.'s stand was so dominant
that even if you thought you were walking in the same direction, you would soon end back up at
some unexpected node of the central stand. When he wasn't rushing to his office or to the
bathroom for a quick break, Petro T. could always be seen surrounded by Amigans from around
Europe. Look carefully, and on the faces of all his listeners you would see an uncertain plethora
of question marks, morphing and fidgeting as they asked and listened. As this is my first Amiga
fair, (gulp!) I gathered up the courage and finally went up and met him.
Wow! I just got to say the vice president is a really really nice man; the community must be
lucky to be headed by someone who loves and cares about the Amiga as he does. No one else
from Amiga Inc. had come along, as they believed they would be scorned and absorbed in
arguments without end, but Petro T.'s son and daughter were there, constantly working at the
stand to and fro. "I have to sell stuff and keep a business running," says Petro. "Business as
usual." As those of you who already know him would safely assume, the managing director was
cheering people up and injecting confidence all around, practically chatting with everyone who
came up to talk to him. Allegedly he wasn't as cheerful as in the previous fairs; as to how much
of the shaken and insecure mood of his listeners infected him, no one can know. What I have
picked up about Petro T.'s hopes of a more prosperous future, reproachful considerations
expressed by visitors, and the ambitious plans of Haage&Partner, I will convey at the very end.
I carefully browsed through each and every Amiga stand, primary objective being to get hold of
as many Amiga mice as I could and take them back to Turkey to the begging crowd, struggling
in oblivion with their callous serial port mice. (Some crooked bureaucracy will let you import
all sorts of joysticks, but will require you to be a store chain to import a single mouse.) A weird
stand had a real Atari SM124 on display, with its back-to-basics OS smiling from a black&white
screen. Surely those mice and joysticks work on the Amiga? Better not drool to long, arguably
it's a nice place to visit, but you don't want to live there. The next stand, belonging to
Shatztruhe, was grand enough with its various showcases to draw the public, and offered many
of the most modern Amiga software: Wipeout 2097, DOpus Magellan II, PFS3, Photogenics,
Superview, versions of Miami, Amiga Forever, and the Amiga Unix Compendium, each of them
a pathmaking jewel in its own right. The employees were very helpful though I bugged them
with never-ending questions, and finally sold me the Unix Compendium for a terrific bargain of
49 DM! It's a great feeling to know, before you even try it out, that you've bought the best
solution possible and will be pleased with the product, so thanks Schatztruhe, you know your
stuff!
Who received perhaps more attention than the DOpus T-Shirts and other novelty items at the
Shatztruhe stand was Urban Mueller advocating his Aminet CD's and CD-sets. One keeps
wondering when an Aminet CD that contains solely PowerPC software will be able to come
forth.
Buhler Electronic, who look as if they've been in the Amiga business since the beginning of
time and are now living their years of nostalgic retirement, were calmly selling all sorts of
peripherals like mice, cables, adapters, accelerator cards, and even an authentic Commodore 570
CD interface! Hey, GVP530 anyone?
Tranquil though it may seem, Epic Marketing was one of the two stands where you could
actually go and speak English to your heart's content. Were it not for my resolution to hang a
round and look interested in stuff, I would never have gotten wind of the well-known PC game
Epic are getting converted to the Amiga. Which one? But that's elementary, my dear Watson:
Think of a graphical adventure game that was planned to be released on the Amiga and the
CD32, but never saw light of day. Now think also that Epic are likely to have a British sense of
humour. You got it right, it's Simon the Sorcerer 2! After perhaps an eternal time of uncertainty
and speculation, one could actually inspect a solidly running version of Simon 2, that Chris
Barrie-dubbed bloke you've been itching to frolic with. But admittedly, you had to query about
it to be able to see it since the employees did not seem very anxious to show it off. From what I
could see, and considering that the developer had to code the game from scratch, perhaps by
reverse-engineering the PC version, a lot of steady work has already gone into Amiga Simon 2,
so allegedly when Epic can get the 500 preorders they need, development will get green light
and "the author can finish the game by the end of January." Somehow I know that for a game
like this, the more modest its system requirements are, the more it's going to sell.
Apart from Simon 2, Epic had a fine stand overall, with a large collection of old games, not
neglecting floppy ones with cute little boxes. They also boasted newer software such as
MakeCD and Foundation: Director's Cut, but I really can't make a merry estimation of how
much the latter has sold. A running demo of the new Foundation really wouldn't do any harm to
dispel the prejudice many people harbour against the original Foundation.
Roll on APC&TPC. The Amiga card game and the numerous game and scene CD's they had
for sale aside, the Phoenix demonstration by the game's author was amassing groups of people
around the clock. The jaw-dropping demo definitely got a few Lambda fans converted to the
Phoenix side of things. Well if you haven't seen it, you probably will not believe my description
of the engine right now. Slam the resolution up to 640x480, and smooth scrolling is your game.
Fly dangerously close to tremendous space bases, run rounds around alien spaceships, try your
nervous finger at the trigger, and you won't notice any visible slowdown; even changing the
view from your cockpit to behind your ship gives you a lagless zoom. The 3D objects, and
space itself, are very colourful, debris pixels whizz insanely by as you confide in your turbo
boost, and you even get rewarded by a lens flare if you manage the right angle. Markus
Pollmann, the author of Phoenix's engine, is not your everyday gamer who plays Colony Wars
all day on his Playstation and finally says, "Hey why don't we chalk up something like that for
the Amiga..?" He actually said "I don't know about any PC games," when I mentioned Colony
Wars. Contrary to public opinion, he has been "constantly working on the game till now," and
when asked about how one could find all these algorithms to bring Phoenix souped up to the
level of modern space simulations, his matter-of-fact reply was "You invent them." Unlike
many other games developers who haven't yet seen the light, Markus's game is programmed in a
very clean C++, with which he can "implement the graphical functions more easily," obviously
A Good Thing. As it had already been announced, there will not be Frontier-style trade in the
game, however we will definitely see a host of alien races with an enticing story to match.
Missions are not there yet, but a language for implementing them has already been realised,
according to the author. The demo was running on a BlizzardPPC with a BlizzardVisionPPC
chucked in for good measure, while the code utilized WarpOS and naturally Warp3D to access
the 3D functions of Permedia 2. As if a peak framerate of 70 (seventy!) and a sustainable
framerate of 60, never dropping below 40 fps, wasn't enough, you could hoist the resolution up
to 800x600 and Phoenix would still run with a peak rate of 65 (sixty-five!) and a sustainable rate
of 40, never dropping below 35 fps, even in the closest flights. Real-time enough for you guys?
In the completed game you'll be able to communicate with motherships, destroy space bases and
whatnot. As to how much there is to its completion, collision detection is already "working very
well," though it was shut down for the demo, and enemy AI is "OK, but will be better."
Beautiful game. For me, the market seems terribly hungry for a game of this nature; you don't
even need to perfect it to sell a good heap. So go and get Starfighter while you wait for this.
A non-ambitious AmigaPlus stand offered both developers' CD's and the German magazine
itself, which would supply you with an 880KB floppy packed to the brim if you asked kindly.
Same if you didn't.
Walk a little more to the door of a little cubicle and you would be smiling at a happy batch of
eager Amigans under the banner "Amiga Club im BTX&Internet." I must say I am still at a loss
as to what the divine purpose of this stand was supposed to be, but it was invariably crowded all
the same. Urban Mueller wouldn't miss the slightest chance to break from his solitude at
Schatztruhe to frequent this cubicle for the occasional refreshment of his nice girlfriend, so
cheers and happy luck to them both!
"The Luggage." Yes. Ahem, I'm really at a loss as to what to say here, but evidently The
Luggage, a device that openly defies comprehension, was the prominent display gear at Amiga
Club. Enthusiastically put together by a gifted Amiga fan called Volker, this flat black box b
ased around an A1200 could haughtily brag about its Blizzard 1260/50, its yadda yadda yadda,
and its modest LCD screen, while Volker was putting on quite a show as he was using it. Holy
cow, words defy me in my attempt to describe how much like a flat black box this luggage
looks. Another hand up for the case that Germans can develop wares that can do ingenious
things, but leave the design to some robingoodfellow who should creep into your workshop
while you are fast asleep and stir your creation to some usable shape. And when nevertheless
asked about when the box would be available, its Architect replied "I sell LCD screens. This
machine I souped up for myself only."
CoolBits constantly had a demo of Wipeout running. Bummer, if Eat the Whistle hadn't
intervened, Wipeout would be hailed as the first commercial PowerPC game, but nevertheless, it
is always a wonder to behold a 100% finished game on a BlizzardPPC. This race moves fast!
Even though Wipeout is not the sort of game that makes a lot of noise, there was always a small
commotion before the display, having second thoughts about spending their hard-earned Marks
somewhere else. Yet one always misses a good T-Zero demo with gigantic speakers around a
broad screen to irritate the crowd. Since Clickboom wasn't around, T-Zero was silently for sale
on the shelves of CoolBits, along with VirtualGP, Starfighter, and several more that could be
seen at almost every stand.
Titan Computer had also taken their stand with emphasis on the upcoming Heretic II, running
full screen in 320x200, surprising Amiga and PC users alike, but not with the most impressive
framerate I'm afraid. Obviously the same fluency of the QuakePPC engine, one can't expect
from the Quake 2 engine, upon which Heretic II is based, but to say the truth, an aggressively
souped up Amiga should be able to handle this Playstationish resolution with ease. Having said
that, Heretic II seems to run perfectly on a BlizzardPPC/233 with a BlizzardVisionPPC, and
because "it does not yet utilize the 3D acceleration," (Warp3D anyone?) it tends to jump frames
in the more complicated scenes. In any case, old Cybervision64 and PicassoIV owners are not
out in the cold just yet. Hence, although the code needs refining, Heretic II is almost real!
Preordering forms were plenty, not only for Heretic II, but for Evil's Doom SE, for which
insatiable FRP dudes have been drooling for some time now, and Shogo as well. Other than the
good old Amiga CD's on the shelves, some digital effects products that sounded sweet like
"Candy Effects for Casablanca" were up for grabs.
RBM Digitaltechnik would gladly sell you useful stuff like an IOBlix, a ScanExpress, and the
like, so it was just the time to shell out the cash if you needed the odd upgrade.
Even if you didn't get tractor-beamed by the beckoning Apollo prices, you would appreciate the
bipartite ACT stand and the range of hardware they had on offer. Apart from some finely
selected Playstation and Dreamcast thingummies, very handy Amiga gadgets were on sale, like
Zorro boards, Cybervisions, IDEfix interfaces and the new PC mouse adapter which just can't be
a bad buy. Even though 060/50 board prices still roamed high, ACT were offering their Apollo
040 boards for what could be called a steal, so if you still won't look down the PowerPC
boulevard, get these boards while you can!
And even if you didn't notice ACT, you would definitely notice Wolfgang Haupt, the funny
guy trying to blot people's eye out with his shiny Amiga Tools CD's from dusk till dawn during
the fair. "3 CD's for 10 Mark! 3 CD's for 10 Mark!" Did he sell any of them? I wonder.
On another note, a modest standlet was occupied by Individual Computers, who happily sold
innovations like Silver Surfer, Catweasel, and a new X-Surf for Zorro, though not with much
fuss. Interestingly enough, a new product called PPC680x0 which "could convert Amiga
assembler-source-codes straight to PowerPC source-codes" was advertised by an anxious bloke
wearing a dodgy hat.
Trace down some of the more obscene CD's, and you would be finding your way to a cubicle
with black battlements within a godforsaken bunker surrounded by a moat in the lowest floor of
a raven dungeon outside whose door it reads "Beware of the leopard." I could fervently testify
that they were also selling Quake and Tekken in there, but admittedly I was afraid to look. Very
German indeed.
Mice, mice, where are you? Thus I came to Haage&Partner, now of OS 3.5 fame, and
consequently star of the show. It turned out that they had a big, big stand, in fact the whole
block with its four sides. Jurgen Haage was bustling about trying to make money and talking
with curious chaps about the Amiga market situation, and one couldn't help noticing that on
Saturday, the AmigaOS 3.5 boxes at his stand were almost sold out! The other three sides were
taken up by promotions for many a fine software, with several computers running demos of
them. Amiga Developers' CD, Fusion, Genesis, NetConnect (version 3, apparently), STFax,
Pagestream, AmigaWriter, StormC, ImageFX, Tornado3D, Warp3D, StormMesa, and a
recurring demo of Wipeout would fairly sum up what there was on display. Seemingly
FusionPPC is due out on the 20th of November. Although non-AmigaOS excitement is now
primarily channeled into LinuxPPC, Fusion could definitely stir up some thrill into those poised
to brag about their Office 98 or VirtualPC or Connectix Virtual Game Station they will run on
their MacOS. Launch FusionPPC one year ago, and it would be a different story. Launch it two
years ago, and we could be at different places now. Same with OS 3.5.
The Amiga Inc. stand I've left till the very end, since this is where the whole show sums up.
Imagine a little bar where you can eat sausages, drink coke, and, well, eat sausages while you sit
around chatting the time away. Two of the walls lead to offices and little depots, and through
the other two you can enter and leave. This whole cube is surrounded by showcases and stands
facing outwards, and further toward the rim there are many display "nodes" suggesting a bigger
rectangle. So was the arrangement of Amiga Inc.'s Cologne stand. One of the nodes was
dedicated to ongoing IRC conferences at #hew99. Have you ever wondered who the guy was
that told you "Send me a '?' and I'll put you on the question queue?" For the first time in my life,
I've seen the administrator for real. True, this guy has to sit in front of his computer all day
typing his time away, but did you know he ate his breakfast, lunch and supper in front of the
monitor as well? Since he insists on question marks, one would think he has a script or
something that automatically inserts the sender into the question queue. No cigar, I'm afraid,
cause when he sees the question mark, he manually types in a queue command with the new
query order. Send him a sentence, and he will ask you for a question mark instead, so the
procession rolls on in a more divine manner.
There was also a second Amiga Internet node in fact, where anyone could try his hand out at
the new Voyager 3.0.37, or AmTelnet, et cetera. Right beside it was the AmigaOS 3.5
demonstration stand, receiving continuous attention from a host of people who seriously
considered leaving the fair with this wonder box under their arms, also for sale at the Amiga Inc.
stand. One couldn't help noticing that the stand employee was constantly very busy displaying
the secrets of the OS and advocating its future prospects. The very curious onlookers selected
multiple icons and dragged them over the screen, exclaiming "Echt cool!" when they beheld the
neat dragging effect. Anyway, at yet another node was Amiga Zentrum Thuringen showing off
TVPaint, and what drew particular attention there was Amiga LinuxPPC running on sundry
Amiga screens. APUS is one of Amiga's really tight grips on survival, and the fact that
LinuxPPC was being exhibited on almost the same level with OS 3.5 shows how much
significance Amiga Inc. grants to it. KDE ran superb, multitasking rather well with an x11amp
for good company, and on one other screen AfterStep was running its super-fast rounds around
the PowerPC CPU.
DCE and KATO Development had also taken their stand with their Twister 1200 and Melody
1200 Pro banging the speakers out of shape. With the help of a Winamp clone called AMPlifier,
I must say the boards sounded remarkably good. Eyetech Group Ltd. was also there, and had
what I take to be a Scala MM400 machine with multimedia stuff on display. EASys, a new
Workbench replacement or so it seems, was introduced to the public by a friendly guy who had
apparently spent such a long time talking and explaining that his throat was regrettably sick
when I came up to query him. "It is designed to make using Workbench easier," he told me
before he almost choked on me. "Excuse me, I need to take a break." It was really too much for
him. Sorry, my questions weren't intended to tumult you out of shape!
On this Amiga Inc. domain I've been describing, AmigaActive was arguably the second of the
two HEW stands where you could go and speak English as you would. The publisher was
grinning there, having sold out his magazines by Saturday afternoon, but an extra supply of
cover CD's saved the day for his stand, brought along by Neil Bothwick, one may presume. It's
pleasing to see the magazine getting the attention it deserves; AmigaActive is just one mag for
which one can honestly stand up and say, "Reading it is well worth the price." Again under the
flanks of Amiga Inc.'s roof was the German magazine AmigaOS. Though a nice lady was posed
at the stand promoting the last two issues for a cheap bargain, it never did receive as much
attention as AmigaActive, I'm afraid.
During all this stroll through the HEW, I have actually met notable people whom I had only
known through the Internet till now: Petro T., Jurgen Haage, Neil Bothwick, Simon Archer, Ben
Vost, etc. I still can't believe I'd been standing there conversing with fellow Amigans; just a few
weeks ago, this wasn't even remotely possible. Ben Vost was a real nice chap, who pointed me
in the right direction of the cool PC mouse adapter from ACT, just what is needed in Turkey.
"Not bad!" would he grin when asked about the new-fashioned rivalry who had shown up with a
stock of magazines at the fair. "I had a bunch of magazines, too, but I sold them all out before
noon. Well someone has to represent Amiga Format at the fair, does he not?" Agree he would
that "Petro isn't as happy," and as to my concerns about the future, Ben said that Amiga Format
would definitely go on in the foreseeable future, and informed me of the brisk rumours flying
around that Met@box's AmiJoe was actually running in an Amiga. Were it not for his nudge, I
would have never found out about the significance of that unsightly board beside Walker in the
Amiga museum. More about that later.
I also had the honour of acquainting Bob Scharp and his wife, producers of the Gateway
Computer Shows from Amigan-St. Louis, at the much-abused Amiga Inc. bar. It is amazing that
they've flown all the way from the United States to attend this union and reassure people of the
future. Cheers, and good fortune to this sweet couple!
Neil Bothwick could be seen trekking to and fro, now with a busted cassette recorder, now with
a minidisc recorder in his hand, speaking with dealers all around. Can't desist pressing CD's, can
you, Neil? Just try not to blot people's eye out with those. Apparently Neil is working for both
AmigaActive and Amiga Format, so long as his Javascript tutorial does not reach a conclusion,
that is. As to who among the ex-CU-Amiga and AmigaActive writers Neil, as a long-time
sojourner, thought had greatest writing talent, he was "not going to answer that," since they had
"very different writing styles." "It's not at all easy to get the magazine on the shelves," he
replied when I reproached him for the absence of AmigaActive in the rest of the world.
"Magazine distribution is a very complex exertion even in Great Britain itself! It's not enough
that you just send a shipment all the way across and expect them to be put on the shelves.
Mostly it is impossible to distribute the magazine unless newsstands from that country request it.
And how can someone request it, if they don't even know about it?" Hopefully this fair has
extensively helped wake the international public to the fact that a brand new Amiga mag had
ascended the soapbox.
Simon Archer was also present (wow, you never know who you can meet at an Amiga fair),
and though we babbled briefly about AmigaActive and the bitter Amiga situation, I couldn't
convince him to kick Jonathan Drain off the mailing list. Better luck next time.
As these guys occasionally sat at the Amiga Inc. bar, ate sausages, drank Bitburger and
discussed minidiscs and 3-wheelers, a constant hubbub was afoot right outside at the very center
of Amiga Inc.'s facade. All kinds of novelty items were up for grabs, with Amiga posters, pens,
matchboxes, cups, colas and stickers selling like candy. You could even buy Amiga socks and
boxer shorts if you desired, and spare me the jokes about the boing balls, I beg you. I bought
four white Amiga mice, an Amiga pen, and an AmiCola, with a free mousepad and stickers to
boot! This souvenir stuff is just great. What was more important though was that the most
passionate Amigan discussions were carried out here with many a fan.
It all got more silent after 16:00 on Saturday, yet no one was lonely enough to be able to sit
around twiddling their thumbs. Hang around the stand and you could awe at people walking
away with their new Amiga Magic packs picked up for a bargain. It is amazing to see how a
computer designed with vision 7 years ago can catch the imagination of the demanding populace
today.
The Amiga Inc. stand's highlight this year was the Amiga history exhibition which could be
observed in showcases on three sides of the central cube. Articles ranged from an ancient
Commodore PC to the wedge box and desktop Amigas, "Best computer of the year" awards, the
CDTV, the CD32 and finally the Walker. If you browsed carefully, you would definitely
stumble upon the A500 PPC card by DCE that never actually got realised. "Is that even
possible..?" you ask. An adapter kludge to bring the BlizzardPPC and the A500 motherboard
together, and you have your panting hot box. Try running Wipeout on that! Don't forget to call
your PC-owning friends home! Anyway, it really is a pity, but then, this is DCE.
Geez. I really can't stress enough how phenomenally astounding it feels to dwell in an Amiga
fair. There is no need for me to put in words which managing director gave me a free black
mouse when he saw how unhappy I was that they were not for sale, which journalist pointed a
shaky finger at me and scorned "Who the hell is this guy?", which magazine editor taught me
how to pronounce "DOpus" correctly, which vice president I had to remind to press the [Enter]
key after he had typed his answer to an IRC question (noticed the delayed answers?), which
software dealer offered me a drink when he learned it was my first fair, how the managing
director cheerfully took out his pen as he saw me approaching with a mousepad, or how I got
stood up for an hour in the Cologne cold when two journalists, one publisher, and two more
"friends" failed to show up where they said they would, ruining my day; the fair is all there to
experience and apperceive.
"Piracy!" barked one Amiga-lover at the Amiga Inc. stand. "They asked and longed for OS 3.5,
they said it would sell to all Amigans, and when at last OS 3.5 comes out, at a very cheap price
for an operating system, you can find MP3 sites all around with the pirated OS 3.5 free for
download. It's very very difficult to work in a market like this."
"Yeah, true," agreed another, "but you are forgetting that we Amigans have been kicked from
the back and fell on our noses so many times now that we don't know what or whom to trust.
We can't see the future!"
"But we must not expect everything from Amiga Inc..."
"I agree, but Amiga's owners haven't given us anything that we can believe in! We don't have a
direction or vision to strive for! Who can foresee what the future of AmigaOS will be?"
"The owners of Amiga aren't going to give us a present just because they feel like it. Don't just
sit and wait. From now on, anything that is good, it's going to come out of the community [or
congregation, one might say in this case]!"
"I have no problems, as a developer, to bring forth better products for the computer I love, but I
don't know what I should work on or what I should help with! If Amiga Inc. shows me a path, if
they give me a vision, saying 'This is the direction we are taking, and here are our assets; you
can trust us,' then I'm more than happy to develop in that direction. Amiga Inc. should use its
resources and assets to set a solid goal, and must constitute the primary engine that drives the
Amiga forward towards that design."
"[silence] It's about the money..."
"What?"
"It's about the money. There is no boundless treasure sack where Amiga Inc. can scoop up the
funds to research a new generation computer. The scheme you are suggesting is out of reach of
Amiga Inc.; it's not going to happen..."
"[silence] Then why didn't they tell us about it?? Why don't they just get up and say 'Money is
the problem. We have limited resources, sorry,' and have it settled? They could let us know that
we must toil more actively."
"[silence] [nod]"
"That's not something so awful. Until now, Amiga Inc. has encouraged and motivated us with
one promising design or other! First they say 'OK, we're going in this direction, this is the future
for Amiga,' and with all enthusiasm we start research and development towards that goal. And
when we have come a long way and go up to show Amiga Inc. our inspiring products, they smile
and say 'Well that's really neat, but it's not something we need; we have a brilliant vision and are
going in this other direction now.' And when we devotedly pool our time and efforts towards
that new promised future, Amiga Inc. says 'That is very nice, congratulations, but that direction
is invalid now; we are going down this other path.' Why are they declaring imaginary designs
and directions when they are not actually going to realise them? It is us that get misled."
"[silence] [silence]"
I've talked to many, even those who had spoken personally to Jim Collas after he had left, but
got nowhere; obviously the exact reasons for his departure are not meant to be public. The
predominant conjecture was that his plans had fallen in conflict with what Gateway wanted to do
with the Amiga, and the visionary wouldn't have it. As to what Gateway wants to do with the
Amiga, any powerful nose can smell out the foggy future through odoriferous sites like
Amiga.org.
Though some wouldn't admit it, every Amigan at HEW '99, even Petro T. himself, was tense
with the bitter acidity of unkept promises and missed opportunities. There is no denying the fact
that such an exquisite community never deserved such grief. "Right now, nobody's making any
money in the Amiga market," said one journalist. "They work for the Amiga for the love of it."
So even though there were no men in suits rushing in and out of cubicles, holding covert
business talks behind closed doors at this fair, Amigans themselves were there, with their ablaze
innovations and prescient consciousness.
Gone are the faint OS 3.1 screens in low resolution that embarrassed us in front of PC-owning
visitors. In practically every stand, OS 3.5 is installed and is dancing in full colour, high
resolution; the whole face of the fair has jumped years ahead. With such broad appeal,
AmigaOS 3.5 is likely to become the de facto standard for Amiga software. It was selling in
large quantities at the fair, that's true, but Haage&Partner need to sell more. As I conveyed my
wishes of success to Jurgen Haage, I noticed that despite his devotion to OS 3.5, he was rightly
concerned about piracy. To and fro he was explaining to everyone that Haage&Partner had
spent so much development effort on OS 3.5, and yet had maintained a price tag so cheap for an
operating system, that the instant availability of pirate copies could only be destructive and
hostile. One Amigan who had the undivided attention of a questioning group demanded "Do
you think that Microsoft earns money from home users to whom he sells Windows? Nothing
could be further from the truth. When Microsoft licenses its OS to a company with 500
employees, it gets paid the money for 500 licenses, and that's it! Amiga has no such opportunity,
because Amiga does not sell to companies. The sole income of the Amiga market stems from
one-to-one relationships with the home users themselves; when home users do not pirate but pay
for the software they use, then the market can stay alive."
At any rate, Jurgen Haage is seriously determined to realise OS 3.6 (where Miami might be
replaced with Genesis because of financial problems), and wants to go on beyond that till the
ulterior plan which every right-minded Amigan had in mind during the fair.
After the Walker in the Amiga museum came an opened-up tower containing a PowerPC
motherboard by IBM. Publication of the IBM PPC board specification to form a basis for the
common PPC platform (remember PReP?) obviously caused an excited stir among eminent
Amiga developers, since not only did it mean liberation from the CHRP swamp that had
suffocated the PPC, but it also implied that a PPC-based Amiga-compatible motherboard could
be produced with relative ease! That's right, an excellent scheme that had been proposed several
years ago but never realised, namely an Amiga motherboard running on the PowerPC chip, is
now at the very focus of Amiga Inc.'s plans! Of course, the operating system will have to be
converted to the new CPU, a dragging exercise which Haage&Partner is willing to undertake.
Jurgen Haage agreed with me that the untimely launch of the AmigaOS open source petition had
put a lot of impulse OS 3.5 buyers off the cause. Getting suspicious about even the sincerest
development effort is another consequence of our having become very irritable as a community.
After a few months of the OS release, the campaign could have done no harm, but when it got
launched right before the release, many people could have moodily convinced themselves that
Haage&Partner shouldn't have done in-house OS development in the first place! Nonetheless,
Jurgen Haage believes that AmigaOS can eventually go open source, but not in the way
petitioners suggest. When patent problems are out of the way, open source development should
be a strictly centralised and thoroughly guided effort, where everyone who is given access to the
source must describe exactly what he has done with it and turn it in. Petro T., too, is not very
interested in what the open source campaign can do. "My first priority now is to convert the OS
to the PowerPC," he says.
Obviously, the vice president is a little disappointed about the BoXeR; as he said on IRC, it is a
good idea but a never-ending-story. (Blittersoft with their promised BoXeR weren't evidently at
the fair.) Unfortunately, Amiga Inc. does not have the financial resources to sponsor any sort of
new motherboard design. Moreover, nobody outside the community is going to support Amiga
Inc. with the millions of dollars necessary to produce a groundbreaking AmigaNG prototype, let
alone a new architecture. That is why the IBM board was a very welcome gift to those with an
eye on the future. Even in its currently quite useless state designed as a server motherboard,
which does not address the niche Amiga wants to appeal to, the IBM machine is definitely a
non-vapour product, alleviating developers with most of the work done for them. Hence, after
legal considerations are sorted out, after AmigaOS 4 emerges for the PowerPC, and after some
tweaking of the IBM board to be able to fulfil the demands of the Amiga niche, we can well see
a whole new line of PowerAmigas rocking the assembly lines in their wake! This grand plan is
one of the most realistic we have been exposed to for a long time!
So Amigans like me, who had been asking with a raised brow, "Well the Iwin site is a big
prank... But what's the point? Why? What use does it have?" have been paid a blessed answer
by developments which turned Iwin guys into Amiga Nostradami. That was what I had in mind
when I mentioned "prescient consciousness." Iwin showed us a mirror onto ourselves,
disclosing our arcane desires and exactly what prevented us from achieving them. It revealed
that anything that is good, is going to come out of the community; when we believe in our own
momentum and work towards a common goal, even dreams will one day be realised.
Perhaps the most poignant moment of the whole fair was when an Amiga stand employee with
a flaming red face and moist eyes voiced, "I've sworn, SWORN, that if I win the lottery, I will
sponsor the development of the new Amiga computer architecture." So will the Cologne show
let you breathe among Amigans with the same passion and vehemence as you. Together you'll
get a glimpse of the foreseeable future, rejoice, and feel as if you've known each other for years.
So, as we say in Turkish, today's Amigans dwell with "sails down on the water," but, as we say
in Turkish, "the cur howls but the caravan walks," and, as we say in Turkish, "the visible ville
needeth no guide."
Atéo-Concepts News
Der serielle Treiber der AtéoSer/AtéoIO-Karte arbeitet nun korrekt.
Die Fehlerkorrektur nahm so viel Zeit in Anspruch, da es sich um
ein Soft- und Hardwareproblem handelte. Zur Lösung des Softwareproblems
wird es kommende Woche ein Update auf der
Atéo-Concepts Website
geben. Im Fall des Hardwareproblems ist eine kleine Modifikation des
AtéoBusses nötig. Diese kann man selbst druchführen - hierfür wird
eine Beschreibung im Web veröffentlicht werden, oder man kann das
Board Atéo-Concepts, nach Absprache (Tel. +33 (0)2.40.85.30.85),
zusenden.
Atéo hat eine beschränkte Zahl A4000er-Tastaturen im Angebot, die sich
u.a. direkt am Atéo-Tower anschließen lassen. Der Preis beträgt
242 Frs.
AtéoBus arbeitet problemlos mit OS 3.5 zusammen. Falls es Probleme
geben sollte, sind dies die üblichen Patches. Ansonsten soll man
es zusätzlich mit dem "COLD" Argument beim Aufruf des
'StartAteoBus'-Befehls versuchen.
Die Veröffentlichung des Scandoubler hat sich aufgrund der Probleme mit
AtéoSer und Verzögerungen beim Prototyp, der erst Anfang September statt
Ende Juli ankam, verzögert. Er soll jedoch noch vor Ende des Jahres
erhältlich sein.
Atéo-Concepts macht darauf aufmerksam, dass Picasso96 V2.0 aufgrund
eines Fehlers bei den Dateien nicht mit der Pixel64 läuft. Wenn
der Fehler behoben ist, wird es P96 in der
Downloadsektion
ein Update geben. Dafür unterstützt inzwischen CyberGfx auch die Pixel64.
Geplant ist die Entwicklung einer Audio-Karte mit DSP, MIDI,
MPEG-Kompression usw. Vorschläge und Ideen können an Atéo-Concepts
geschickt werden.
Amiga Plus
Gerhard Bauer, Chefredakteur der Amiga Plus hat sich im Amiga-Club-Forum
zur Situation der Amiga Plus geäußert. Wir haben seine Erlaubnis,
das Posting auch hier zu veröffentlichen.
++++
Hallo alle, da ich jetzt endlich mal so richtig schreiben kann, was ich will
(die Gong-Richtlinien erlauben nicht, dass man sich vom Anwalt ungeprüft
abseits des Heftes äussert), möchte ich das auch tun:
1. Ja, die Amiga Plus macht zu. Ich weiss nicht, wer etwas anderes
verbreitet, aber die letzte Ausgabe ist definitiv die 01/2000. Ehrlich.
Die wurde schon in die Druckerei geliefert und müsste jetzt gerade auf
Paletten gepackt werden.
Die Amiga Plus wird fusioniert mit der amigaOS.
Die Amiga Future wird einstweilen weiterlaufen.
Meines Wissens nach ebenfalls die CD-ROM.
Warum sie eingestellt wurde? Das hat einfach wirtschaftliche Gründe.
Wir machen ja seit April 97 die "Notebook, Organizer & Handy".
Und mit diesem Heft haben wir seit Mitte des Jahres die AP subventioniert,
weil sich die nicht mehr alleine trug. Und nachdem abzusehen war, dass das
ganze Geschwätz um einen neuen Amiga nur heiße Luft war, mussten wir -
um die Firma nicht noch weiter reinzureißen und um die damit verbundenen
Arbeitsplätze zu retten - die Amiga Plus abgeben. Es geht nicht,
dass sich in einem nicht mehr existenten Markt zwei Zeitschriften
bekriegen. Und weil die amigaOS weitermachen wollte und wir uns auf andere
Themen konzentrieren, haben wir unsere Plus zur amigaOS gegeben.
2. Messeort: Ich will hier nur mal die bei einigen Forumsteilnehmern
vorhandenen Ansichten etwas korrigieren. Die Messe hat den Veranstaltern
meiner Rechnung nach etwa 400.000 Miese gebracht.
Eine Messehalle zu mieten kostet inklusive Personal und Energie
(Energie alleine etwa 80-100 TDM) um die 750.000 Mark. Es dürfte also
die letzte gewesen sein. Leider.
Wir haben unseren Messeauftritt am Samstag abend abgebrochen, weil
im ganzen nur etwa 1000 Hefte verkauft wurden. Und da lohnt sich die
Hotelübernachtung nicht. Am Sonntag waren es nochmal 140 Hefte - und
das ist einfach nur lächerlich.
Ein Problem, das ein alternativer Messeveranstalter hätte: Die
Messegesellschaften lassen Leute nicht so einfach in ihre Hallen,
weil sie immer größte Angst vor einem Imageverlust durch eine
Tandler-Messe haben. Ich schätze, dass Köln keine solche Messe mehr
in ihren Hallen haben will und auch alle anderen Messsegebiete im
Ruhrgebiet werden nur lachen, wenn man anfragt. Und ausserhalb
des Ruhrgebiets gehts nicht, weil man an allen anderen Orten nicht
das nötige Publikum hat. Die Messe muss da sein, wo die meisten
Leute sind. Und das ist einfach Köln, Düsseldorf oder so.
3. Amiga auf der Comdex.
Amiga hat ja in diesem Jahr angekündigt, die neuen Information
Appliances auf der Comdex zu zeigen - war wohl nix. Ich bin jetzt
seit Montag 16 Uhr Ortszeit hier in Las Vegas und natürlich gibts
nix von Amiga. War ja klar. Gateway hat einen Stand, aber da gibts nix Neues.
Wie eingangs erwähnt, werde ich jetzt öfters hier sein - weil ich
jetzt darf. Wenn jemand Fragen hat, wie es bei einer Computerzeitschrift
zugeht, einfach raus damit. Ich schau etwa jeden zweiten Tag rein.
DANKE AN ALLE LESER, DIE UNS DIE STANGE GEHALTEN HABEN.
DANKE AN PETRO, DIE HAENDLER UND ENTWICKLER.
Viele Grüsse, Gerhard Bauer
FusionPPC - Anmerkung/Aufruf/Ermahnung/Drohung
Thomas Lorenz schreibt:
Unten stehender Artikel stammt aus der Fusion Mailing-Liste.
Da bisher nur 1/4 der Interessenten ihre Vorbestellung durch Bezahlung
bekräftigt haben (Folge dieses "Mangels" an Finanzkraft ist, dass der
komplette Code von Microcode-Solutions selbst geschrieben werden muss ->
verspätete Fertigstellung der Amiga-Version/Verzögerung der PC-Version),
sieht Jim Drew folgende vier Möglichkeiten für die Zukunft Amiga-Version:
- Rückzahlung der Vorausbezahlung, Abbruch des Projektes !! (Nein !!)
- Fortsetzung des Projektes, Fertigstellung bis Weihnachten.
ABER: Nur für diejenigen, die preordered (und bezahlt) haben,
(Kopier-Schutz durch Hardware-Dongle) (Wohl auch nicht so toll !)
- Preiserhöhung auf 299 $, (wohl auch bis Weihnachten) (Upps, teuer ..)
- Darauf hoffen, dass diejenigen, die Interesse an Fusion PPC zeigten,
doch noch ihre
Vorausbezahlung
leisten und das Projekt durch
externe Verstärkung zügig beendet werden kann.
Für weitere Vorschläge zum Vorgehen wäre Jim Drew
offen. Wegen dem großen bisher geleisteten Aufwand würde er das Projekt
ungern einstellen.
Ich kann nicht verstehen, warum so wenig User interesse an einer PPC-Mac Emulation zeigen.
Das Argument "mal warten bis es draußen und getestet ist" ist in einer sollchen Situation
nicht angebracht. Außerdem konnte man sich von der (recht) guten Quallität von
Fusion68k ja schon überzeugen. Betrachtet man den momentanen "Boom" auf dem MAC-Markt
und die damit verbundene große Menge an Software-Neuerscheinungen, müßte die
Aussicht auf eine günstinge PPC-MAC Emmulation (300 DM sind günstig) mehr als
"verlockend"/begeisternd sein. Außerdem bedenkt man den hohen Preis für die schon
gekaufte Amiga-PPC-Hardware und den bisherigen Mangel an brauchbarer AMIGA-PPC-Software
verglichen mi r Begeisterung für Fusion PPC aufkommen (Was nützt der PPC ohne
Software ?). Man hat den Eindruck die Amigianer wäre Lemminge, die fatalistisch auf den
Abgrung zulaufen, da der Rechner "ja sowieso" tot ist. Wenn das Verhalten so bleibt, kann man
nur sagen "selbst" schuld...
Was mich bisher auch erstaunt ist, daß es bisher keinen
"Werbe-/Promotionaufwand" vom deutschen Distributor Haage&Partner gegeben hat... Anscheinend
hat man dort nur Interesse "lohnenswertere" Eigen-Projekt zu "fördern". Für einige
Leute ist es bestimmt auch "abschreckend" im Ausland bestellen zu müssen. Ich würde
Fusion PPC jedoch auf jeden Fall als Bereicherung für das Amiga-Software-Angebot ansehen...
Oder warten alle auf eine Raubkopie des Programmes :)
Greetz
Thomas Lorenz
Hier noch der Artikel von Jim Drew:
Well, as the clock winds down, we realize that we are not going to meet the
deadline for the Amiga PPC release of FUSION. There are numerous reasons,
with the most significant reason being that we have received only a small
portion of the funds from the 500 that were require to pre-order. We were
to use this money for hiring outside sources for writing portions of the
code, which we have now been doing ourselves. This whole thing upsets us
very much, as if we had known that the pre-payments were never going to
arrive, we would have spent the time on the PC version and have it available
already (we will always re-coup expenses in the PC market). We are
disappointed that less than 1/4 of the people who pledged to pre-pay have not.
Because of this, we have only a few choices:
- Completely abandon the project and refund the money to those individuals
who did pre-pay.
- Continue the project with our normal staff and have the emulation available
by Christmas, only to those who pre-paid (no sales to those who did not
pre-pay... and use a hardware based dongle to eliminate piracy).
- Continue the project with our normal staff, and raise the price of the
emulation now to $299.95.
- Please with the public to pay if you pledged to pre-pay and hope that the
money comes in so that we can send out some of the work to expidite the
process.
We don't know what to do. We have a ton of work done, and we don't really
want to toss it away. Any suggestions?
