AudioLabs: ProStationAudio Titanium demo 5.01 (Update)
ProStationAudio Titanium demo 5.01 available in
the download section.
- fixed Play Object and Play Region (were routed to the wrong busses resulting in noise)
- correctly loads older format projects, useful for tutorials
- variable bitrate DSP plugins now fully supported
- added "mouse-over" help text for new console buttons
As both the "project format" and "variable bitrate" modifications remove the
chances of possible system crashes, it's strongly recommended to replace the
older demo with the new 5.01 version.

Amiga Forever now available from individual Computers
The Amiga emulation package Amiga Forever is now available as a bundle
with the Catweasel ISA controller. Amiga Forever turns your PC into an
Amiga. The package which is available since 1997, includes a license of
all Amiga-patents, trademarks and copyrights that are necessary for an
emulation. Therefore, an official Amiga Notebook "Powered by Amiga" is
available since 1997.
Amiga Forever makes all the hardware of the base system also available
on the Amiga side: Virtual memory, Fast- and GBit Ethernet, sound- and
graphics boards as well as DVD and USB.
Further information about Amiga Forever can be found on the publisher's
website http://www.cloanto.com/.
Individual Computers will continue to support both Amiga Forever and its
developers. There will be no support for the QNX version of Amiga OS XL
for the Catweasel ISA in the near future, whereas for Amithlon we will
provide a software that uses the ISA Catweasel just like a real Amiga
Catweasel.
Amiga Forever developers are even going a step further, they use the
Catweasel to emulate the internal Amiga diskdrive.

Emulation: Playstation emulator FPSE 0.09, Amiga Revision 2
Mathias Roslund has released a new version of the Playstation emulator FPSE. It is the second Amiga-version which is based on version 0.09. You need a Playstation Bios-rom to emulate. There are some screenshots to the Amiga-version.
It follows the original message:
A new release with some bugfixes and added features. Memory card support
is fixed, and compiler (dynarec) and PSX Port support has been added.
There is also a switch to use READ_CD for CD support. This was used by
some of the FPSE/Amiga 0.08 revisions and might work better than CMD_READ
with some CD-ROMs.

First routines of Project Crashsite on the Amiga 2001
Here are two news on the Project Crashsite status:
On the Amiga 2001 there will be the first routines of Project Crashsite to
look at. There will be the rudimentary playable combat and the space flight
will invite to fly along the planets of Future II. I hope for many visitors and would
be happy about numerous suggestions and comments.
The poll on www.projektcrash.de (title link) turned out that five of six
votees prefer a PPC version.
As a first answer to this I would like to announce the following:
- The interlude animations in the game will be MPEG animations.
- Mathias Roslund gave permission to use AMP for playing the animations
in Project Crashsite, which makes an effective animation player for PPC and
CGFX available for the game!

Amiga Arena: PuzzleBOBs
In cooperation with Emanuele Cesaroni, Nexus Development, the Amiga Arena and
Fun Tim World present the game PuzzleBOBS, which is about a "Bust'n Move" clone
to be available on the "AMIGA 2001" show.
From now on the demo version is available on
http://www.funtime-world.de/puzzle.html,
and on the support page of the Amiga Arena.
About PuzzleBOBS
The game was developed by the Italian software company Nexus Development which
was founded by Emanuele Cesaroni. Worldwide distribution will be done by
Fun Time World in cooperation with the Amiga Arena.
Previews of "PuzzleBOBS" can be found in the current issue of the "Amiga Future" #33 (German Amiga Game print magazine), and in "No Cover" issue #88 (German Amiga disk magazine).
Technical background and more:
PuzzleBOBS is completely configuralbe:
- Screen mode (AGA / OCS / ECS / Picasso96 or CyberGraphX comaptible graphic boards).
- Bitplanes (up to 16 and 24bit screens).
- Playable in three languages (German, Itatlian, English).
- Playable from HD, full or partial installation (min. 14 MB).
- Written in 100% assembler.
- Level and sound import.
Backgrounds, bubbles, object speed, music and sound effects, explosion style, and masses of
other little things, as well, can be configured to match your own personal desire.
The game was programmed to allow different bubbles to have different characteristics. There are
bubbles that bounce back form walls, which of course simplifies severity. The game runs in full
multitasking on it's own screen or in a window on the Workbench.
When the game's window becomes inactive the game automatically turns to sleep mode, which is
a special feature to let you continue your work on the Workbench. In sleep mode even every audio channel and colour palette get's released - pure culture multitasking. Further and detailed informaiton can be found in the demo version's guide.

Nostalgica: Amiga Graphics artist + programmer Jim Sachs
While looking around the news pages of CHIP.DE
I found a link to the aquarium screensaver in the news on the new Windows XP and
it's "self-made plus package". This screensaver was programmed by Jim Sachs.
Until then I had no idea of this name, but as I then looked at "About the Author" (title link)
on the serenescreen.com website, some
known pictures of the author from Amiga days turned up. A link on this page shows
many pictures of his
work history, too.
With another link on the same site the Amiga is mentioned again in an
interview.
To smile:
To the surprised interviewer's questions, how it comes that the download of this
emotive Windows screensaver is just about 600k in size:
RADEONIC: Probably one of the things that surprised me most was the size of
the download. Did you spend a lot of time optimising the code, and did you
have any special tricks for compressing textures?
JS: No, I haven't really started to optimize the code yet. Coming from
the Amiga, where everything had to fit on a 770k floppy, I am utterly
amazed at how huge PC apps have become. What could these programmers
possibly be filling up all those megabytes with? The whole ascii source
code for the program? The phone book for their area code?
It was a pleasure to me to accidently stumble upon this programmer and those Internet sites and
thereby to learn, that he still likes the Amiga, allthough he changed the system.

Tool: Martin R. Elsner on 'StopMenu'
Martin R. Elsner wrote:
«Hello,
just now on St.Martin's day I have some bad and good news for you.
The bad: I will stop development of StopMenu.
In the last weeks I worked with full power on StopMenu - only to rename the
variables and functions (some still polish or whatever), to add some
commentaries (there were quiet none) and to try to change some parts. As
final surprise one of many tests made my Amiga crash and thereby destroyed
the source code, the work of many days. This and the belief that
changing StopMenu is harder and needs more time than writing an own program
caused my decision. StopMenu was not only bad written and commented (well,
it has grown piecewise and has got the errors from both programmers ;) -
no, it also has some very restricting, old fashioned program parts that
should be replaced by a modern method.
Before you get the possibility to jump out of the window, here's the good
news:
One learns from each error. I've seen so many errors ;) that I now want to
make Choowin replace StopMenu !! It is written in best C++, uses Reaction,
and last but not least I know what I have programmed. And that's not all -
the prefs part of StopMenu is not forgotten, but replaced by a connection
to MainPrefs !! So both programs will form the beginning of the new
environment, where also ClassAction can join. The new project will consist
of the taskbar with start menu that allows to open the prefs and later the
file manager. Other programs will have the possibility to get an icon in
the taskbar.
That's a lot - but the three programs exist, Choowin will grow to StopMenu's
functionality (well, not exactly the same) and all of them will be joined to
the new MRE ("mainmenu with Reaction enhancements").
You can find a first screenshot of the startmenu on my homepage, the
first version will be available soon.
Regards,
Martin»

SimpleMail V0.12
SimpleMail V0.12 released.
Due to an exploit in MUI in combination with some PIPE-handlers
we have released a new version now, everybody actually should
update, as the old version has a really nasty security problem.
The changes are:
- Fix for the MUI exploit.
- Messages can be also encrypted with PGP 2.6.x.
- Switching away of columns in the message list is possible now.
(save it via "Save Prefs")
- Completation of email-addresses improved.
- A small menu added to the readwindow that makes it possible to
see the raw mail.
- Mousewheel support of the readwindow is more tolerant now.
- The attachments are better identified if you have OS3.9
and DefIcons. You can double-click on an icon to start an
action (needs also OS3.9 and DefIcons, e.g. double-click on an
archive will start UnArc in the default config of DefIcons).
- Printing of messages and text-attachments is possible now.

Serious security leak in MUI Internet programs? (update)
Following the title link you find an English written document that reveals a severe
security leak in MUI programs.
Programs displaying text by using a MUI text object can be forced to execute
Shell commands via active PIPE: devices with particular escape sequences. To say
it clearly: It's theoretically possible to force for example YAM via a mail with
specifically manipulated subject line to delete files on the computer of the
receiving person.
It's not an error in MUI or AwnPIPE:/APIPE:, it should be the task of the
programmers to filter such sequences before displaying text received via the
Internet.
As first security measure it is recommended not to use affected programs
anymore or not to mount AwnPIPE:/APIPE: devices during the boot process (remove all PIPE:
icons from SYS:Devs/DosDrivers/).
Affected applicationen are for example YAM and StrICQ.
Not affected are the products of Vaporware, obviously the ESC sequences get
already filtered here (it's not said from which program versions on).
Update:
Jens Langner, one of the
lead programmers of YAM, points out that a hotfix is already in the works and
that there'll soon be a 2.3 fix release removing this security leak in YAM.
Update II:
Hynek Schlawack and Sebastian
Bauer will as soon as possible release a fix for SimpleMail.
Update III:
As the original text shows seems this exploit danger to be not given using PIPE: as this
doesn't offer any start possibilities: "The standard AmigaOS PIPE: is not
affected since it is incapable of executing commands". Therefore was the above text changed
accordingly. (ps) (Translation: wk)

most significant new feature is the integrated table editor. This
was originally planned as an add-on but because of the many requests
it was decided to make it an integral part of the package. Further
functions are mail merge, control over compression in PDF files,
text inset function, object transformation and a higher speed.
The most important new functions:
- Table editor
- Built in Mail Merge
- PDF export control over compression and encoding
- Text inset from column edges
- Custom column widths and gutters inside text frames
- Shift-cursor text selection
- Move pages between chapters
- Duplicate/Transform objects across pages
- Speed improvements
- and of course much more
Windows, Amiga and Macintosh versions

Although the availability of AmiATLAS 6, the multimedia route planner, was planned
for the 15th November 2001 (we reported),
it is already finished. Users of version 5 receive a cheaper update.

WHDLoad Website down
Bert Jahn: "The website is currently down due problems with the internet
service provider. I hope that will be solved in some days/weeks/months.
If you know a provider with at least 100 MB space, 3GB traffic, ssh
access, own cgi and below 40 eur/month let me know."
WHDL is friendly Harddisk-Install package.
