Amigan Software (Website)

Software-Updates by Amigan Software
The shareware developers Amigan Software released updates for three programs.

Version 7.61 of the snake clone 'Worm Wars' is now available for AmigaOS and Windows.

A new version (5.76) of the freeware program 'Report+' has been released. The tool is based on ReAction/GadTools and requires AmigaOS 3.9. With the help of 'Report+' one can create for example Aminet readmes, replace the Commodore bug reporting tool or check the size (in bytes) of a directory.

Of Saga, a conversion of the board game "Saga: Age of Heroes" released in 1981 by TSR, a new version (1.34a) is now available. (nba) (Translation: sk)

System-Monitor: Scout Version 3.3
Thore Böckelmann released version 3.3 of the system monitor 'Scout'. 'Scout' offers you a closer look on current system resources and lets you manipulate them if possible.

Due to the fact that the list of changes is quiet long we recommend to read the changelog. The source code is no longer available as a seperate archive. The sources are now accessible via sourceforge.net as a public CVS repository.

The binary archive is also available in the Aminet. (nba) (Translation: sk)

Poseidon: Unknown person spreads crack-instructions
As the author of Poseidon, Chris Hodges, informs on his website, someone spread instructions how to crack his USB stack on three mailing-lists yesterday.

According to Chris Hodges, this happened under the fake name "Dan Gaines" and, as a smokescreen, by using a freemailer in London as well as an anonymous proxy located in the UK. But the high amount of grammar mistakes in the posting would make it unlikely that this person was a native speaker. "Dan Gaines" would have been registered only a week ago, by which this seems to be a thoughtfully planned assault.

As the author states, the effects on the development of Poseidon are still to be considered - but the effect on his motivation would have been already devastating.

The further speculation by Chris Hodges regarding the background of this incident can be found on his website in the message from November 3. (snx)

ArakAttack - USB driver for Amithlon & OpenPCI
The ArakAttack demo version is now available. The demo version is time limited and much slower than the full version.

What is ArakAttack?

ArakAttack is an USB driver paket that allows the usage of USB on any AmigaOS compatible system with PCI slots. ArakAttack isn't an USB stack, it's a driver paket for Chris Hodges great USB Stack Poseidon.

What are the features of ArakAttack?
  • Amithlon optimised version.
  • OpenPCI compatible version.
  • UHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
  • OHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
  • Unlimited number of USB controllers supported at the same time.
  • Unlimited number of parallel USB transfers garantees maximum performance.
  • Only one device with multiple units makes installation very easy.
  • Intelligent transfer descriptor caching mechanism.
  • Several user options allow an optimisation of resource management to the users requirements.
  • Full mem handler support. (Frees resources and caches if the system signals low system memory)
  • No HUB depth limits.
  • Separate time out handling for each USB request garantees the driver never freezes the USB stack or the system.
  • External interrupt fallback for systems with interrupt trouble.

What is also required to use ArakAttack?

The latest version of Chris Hodges' Poseidon USB Stack.

In addition to that other components are required:

Amithlon: powerpci.library - version 2.13 or better.

Amiga PCI / Pegasos: openpci.library - version V1.20 or better.

Which USB Controller is required for ArakAttack?

Most of the current USB controllers are supported. Just take care it's UHCI, OHCI or EHCI compatible. Well, you will have difficulties to find any other within the stores now.

Amithlon user may be happy to hear that on board USB controllers are working, too!

How can I register?

Well, currently the registration makes no sense, because ArakAttack is quite useless without a registered USB Stack.

If you own a Poseidon key feel free to register. Further information can be found in the manual.

PLEASE: Don't bother Chris Hodges with questions about registering Poseidon. He is very busy at the moment, so please keep quiet until the registration site will be up again. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AWeb: Status report
No, we're not dead. :-) People are busy doing other things and things are awfully quiet. However a few things have happened:

GCC conversion of AWeb APL Lite seems to be progressing, slowly but steadily. It was therefore decided that we still need another SAS/C version before finally moving to GCC as the wait has been too long already.

We are in need of a person who can compile the AWeb 3.4 APL sources in CVS with the patches that have been submitted by various people and help us go towards a 3.5 release. This needs to be done using SAS/C.

As for the new AWeb, progress on KHTML is going too slow, because the developers have too little time to work on it. If you are willing to give a hand in helping a modern HTML-browser onto the AmigaOS, AROS and MorphOS platforms, contact me.

If you are wondering about our plans, the document which describes this is here. Be aware that the document is not entirely complete and is based on discussion on our developer mailing list. (snx)

"Programmers from all Lands..." is an overview of the mobilization of the open source movement, a comparison of different ideological perspectives of software development and a short exploration of the problems of software patents. An excerpt follows (with the friendly approval of Zeit.de) and the complete article is reachable under the title link:

For years only geeks got excited about it. They sat, strewn around the globe, at their computers and programmed, criticized, and discussed via the Internet. The rest of the world had no idea what was there in the 'Net: at first glance just some software. Actually the free thinking online community had created an antithesis to Microsoft, the most powerful and largest software house in the world. [...]

Hardware-Hack: CD-writer in original A1200 case
Update (26.10.2012, cg): integrated entire article into news item during database migration

Amiga user Egon Kohlschütter has managed to fit both a CD-ROM and an IDE harddisk into the A1200's original case. The idea is to move the harddrive to the right of the case (to the position normally occupied by the internal disk drive) and put the CD-ROM to the left side of the case. The floppy drive had to be removed to gain the neccessary space (Egon uses an external drive now) and the case had to be slightly modified. This is what the end result looks like:

Fitting the CD-ROM drive

Get an internal CD-ROM drive (or even a CD-Writer!) targeted for Laptops - these are small enough to fit into the original case. Some devices that should work are:
  • TEAC CD-224E (CD-ROM)
  • TEAC CD-W24E (CD-Writer)

These drives use a special IDE connector called "Mini-IDE", so you'll have to find a suitable adaptor. These adaptors are usually called "Slimline adaptors" (Mini-IDE to IDE-40-pins). As these Laptop-CD-drives are usually jumpered as "Master" and the internal HD should be "Master" aswell, you should also get one of the myriad of A1200 IDE devices that enable you to connect up to four drives to your Amiga.

Obviously, you'll have to cut an opening into the case - a CD-ROM not accessible from the outside is not exactly useful ;-) This image demonstrates the exact position of the drive:

Some hints for the actual case modification:
  1. open the case, remove the RF shielding and position the CD-ROM
  2. The drive rests partly on the bottom half of the case
  3. use a pen to mark the area that has to be cut out
  4. use a dremel or a similar tool to remove the plastic
  5. Powerstrip is used to fix the drive at its new position.

Moving the harddrive to its new position

The harddrive will be put where the internal disk drive used to be. Remove the disk drive and make sure that the internal disk drive connector can not be shortened by accident (e.g. by putting an old IDE or floppy connector onto it).

The RF shielding may cause short circuits too - make sure that you either remove enough of it to avoid that or put some isolating material around the harddrive.

The floppy disk drive

When booting, the A1200 will spend a few seconds searching for the internal floppy disk drive. Additionally, Workbench might complain about the missing disk drive. Both problems can be easily solved by connecting pins #1 of the internal floppy disk drive connector with the pin below it. The boot process will be slightly faster after this modification.

But with these pins connected, your A1200 will not recognise external disk drives. Therefore Egon connected the pins using a switch: The switch is closed most of the time, but you can open it at any time (even if the machine is already up and running) to access external disk drives and close it again afterwards.

More pictures

Here are some more pictures showing various details of Egon's hack:

Additional notes

The scsi.device included with AmigaOS 3.0/3.1 is not able to handle ATAPI drives (like CD-ROM or CD-RW drives), so you'll have to use a replacement. AmigaOS 3.5+ comes with an updated scsi.device, another option would be the shareware IDEFix.

Egon equipped his A1200 with the CD-RW drive mentioned above. BurnIt does not have specific support for this particular drive, but the generic driver (No. 9) works fine.

If you did not connect the pins on the internal floppy disk drive connector as described above, Workbench may complain about the missing disk drive - OS 3.5+ users should deactivate drive "DF0:" in the Workbench preferences to avoid this.

Egon can be contacted at Egone@freenet.de. Please note that his English is (quoting Egon) "pretty poor", so you may contact us aswell, we'll forward your feedback to Egon. (cg) (Translation: cg)
