Troika NG: Soundmax codec chosen for Amy'05
As Troika announced in the following press release they chose the AD1888 by Analog Devices for the announced Amy'05 board that is distributed under the trademark Soundmax.
Press release - Troika NG would like to announce that we have chosen a fine industry standard AC97 codec, the AD1888 manufactured by Analog Devices, marketed under the Soundmax® brand. The sound codec is used in our Project “Prometheus”/ Amy’05.
This fine device brings many features (including AD’s special filters) used in Asus motherboards and Creative products, etc., to the Amiga community.
In our design we use 6 audio connectors to provide a full surround sound system: Front, Left side, Right side, Center, Surround Sound via audio jacks and an SPDIF output through a standard RCA connector. We also include an internal Intel™ HD-Audio standard header for case connections and so much more!
Some technical details: “The AD1888 is a 6 channel (supporting 5.1 surround sound) AC'97 2.3 compatible codec. It features SPDIF output, variable sample rates, 20-bit DACs, and multiple stereo analog inputs along with many cost saving features including: integrated headphone amplifiers, selectable microphone inputs with built-in preamplifiers, jack sensing (with auto-topology switching), hardware channel spreading and downmixing, as well as crystal-free operational modes.” (snx) (Translation: wk)

Envy24 v5.3 to support M-Audio-Delta soundcards
The OS4 native driver Envy24 supports in version 5.3 that has just been uploaded to the OS4depot the semi professional soundcards
M-Audio
Delta 44, 66 (untested) and 1010LT as well as the Terratec Phase 88. Right now is the funcionality, among other things the multiple in and outputs, limited by the sound system AHI, but the sound quality is very good, as the developer said who recommends the activating of the HiFi Stereo++ mode.

PPC-Hardware: "Samantha" with PPC440 and ATI-onboard graphic?
In a thread at amigaworld.net a photo was posted that shows a small part of the PPC motherboard nicknamed "Samantha" that will be introduced at the Italian show Pianeta Amiga (September 23 and 24, Empoli).
The picture shows a part of the PCB that seems to be prepared to host two somewhat bigger chips. The pinout of the right area indicates that a PPC440 CPU might be placed at this position. The PPC440 is a SoC (System on a Chip) CPU available with up to 667 Mhz.
As of yet, it's not known which chip will be put on the mounting area shown on the left part of the picture. Since the CPU used doesn't need a traditionell northbridge, an on-board graphics chip could be placed there. Interesting in this context: On an Italian forum, Massimiliano "m3X" Tretene of Soft3, one of the initiators of the project, identifies himself as an "ATI OEM partner". (cg) (Translation: dr)

Emulator: PSPUAE 0.54
PSPUAE is a port of the well known Amiga emulator E-UAE for Sony's portable game console PSP. New in version 0.54:
- Based on e-uae 0.8.29 WIP3
- Ditched harddrive support to gain speed as I still can't get it to work with WIP3
- Removed support for serial ports to gain speed
- Several optimizations to the e-uae code primarily removing stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense on the PSP
- Added cpu speed option - thanks to FOL
- Added profiling support
- Fixed memory issues - now allows 6MB for PSP V1.50 and 5.5MB for PSP V2.00+
- Should run using kxploit and the eloader (So V1.50 release works with all)
- Switched middle and right mouse button
- Fixed screenshot
- only displays leds for 2 drives as only 2 are enabled (will not accept 4 drives as I have disabled the last 2 for performance reasons)
- disabled debugging support (can be enabled again it doesnt really make a performance hit)
- only possible to select valid memory configurations (up to 2 Mb chip, 1.5 Mb bogo and 2.5Mb fast)
- Fixed keyboard mappings
- when mapping keyboard keys to psp buttons the behaviour is to keep the key down until the psp button is released.
- removed 2 drives from the disk menu
- added msg box for when no kickstart rom is present and also for when changing kickstart roms while using PSPUAE
- added msg box for when PSPUAE runs out of memory instead of crashing (makes it very hard to crash PSPUAE now)
- added KickStart 2.04 & 2.05 to the Rom selection menu

Aminet: status update September 2006
press release: It's been a while since last time, but that doesn't mean we haven't done anything in the meantime. Following is an update on the newest stuff happening over at Aminet.net.
The Aminet Wiki
Aminet has its own Wiki now: at wiki.aminet.net you'll find manuals, FAQs, information about the team and Aminet's history aswell as our changelogs, todo lists and bug 'database'. The section covering Aminet's usage urgently needs more info added though: if you'd like to help out with creating a nice user manual covering archive formats, the tools required to handle them, various ways of transfering archives from a PC to the Amiga, using an FTP client etc. - get in touch with us, please.
Translating the Wiki into other languages is planned, but our ressources are somewhat limited and there are lots of things to do - so this might take a while.
New directories
Several new directories have been created, amongst them misc/os, which is intended for operating systems and updates. The first uploads to this directory are "Amiga Minix", an open source Unix like operating system for Amiga 500, 2000 and 3000 computers and the final m68k-amiga distribution of OpenBSD. The former was kindly provided by Thomas Unger, while the latter is a mirror of ftp.planetmirror.com and was moved to Aminet because OpenBSD-Amiga is discontinued und slowly gets removed from the official BSD-mirrors.
A complete list of the new directories:
We already started to move files into these directories, if you stumble across further packages that should be moved, don't hesitate to tell us. Thanks a lot to James Jacobs for both suggesting game/edit aswell as providing a complete list of files that should be moved in there.
More mirrors
Three new mirrors have been added (de5.aminet.net, se.aminet.net and dk.aminet.net). For more info about mirrors and who to thank for the various ones, see wiki.aminet.net/Mirrors. Aminet now consists of seven mirrors - with more coming up.
As the question has been brought up several times now: Yes, we do accept big files, a CD ISO shouldn't be a problem. For anything significantly bigger than 80-100 MB we'd appreciate it if you would notify us upfront though.
New filetypes supported
We now accept PDF documents (you don't have to put them into an archive anymore) aswell as music and video files in an Ogg container, the most popular ones being Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Theora. In addition we encourage you to use the open OGG formats rather than the proprietary MPEG (MP3, MPEG1/2) formats which often come with patent and license issues.
As we're still getting DMS uploads occasionally: Please note that Aminet does not support DMS. If you need to upload a disk image, convert it to ADF first. We accept both plain ADF files aswell as zipped ADF (.adz).
A reminder - server abuse
Recently we encountered postings on various forums where people announced they would download the whole Aminet repository, others explained that they already did it or gave instructions how this can be accomplished easily. Apparently, we really need to address this issue.
Downloading the whole Aminet repository is considered abuse. No ifs, buts or whens - end users are not entitled to run personal mirrors. Aminet has a total size of more than 32 GB right now, individual users downloading that much data from our servers just for the sake of having their own local copy are not just acting rather impolite, they are actually eating up resources that somebody has to pay for.
Aminet isn't going away anytime soon. It's going to celebrate its 15th birthday soon, and we do have the resources available to make sure that there are going to be quite a few more birthday parties. We also have a bunch of 100% mirrors up and going, so there are no excuses really.
If you really feel like leeching, go download Google - compared to Aminet, that whole WWW thing is a relative newcomer and might be gone any day now.
As usual, an extensive change log can be found at: wiki.aminet.net/Changelog. If you want to get in touch with us, either drop us a mail at aminet@aminet.net or join our IRC channel #aminet on irc.amigaworld.net. We *love* feedback, feature requests and complaints. Honestly. (cg) (Translation: cg)
