Crowd funding: Turrican 2 - The Orchestral Album
Already in the past, Chris Hülsbeck experimented with orchestral arrangements. Now he is going to record the songs from the Amiga classic Turrican II with an orchestra. In order to be able realizing "Turrican 2: The Orchestral Album", the fans have to finance it via Kickstarter with 75.000 Euro. So far about 44.000 Euro has been donated. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Alien Breed clone: Prototype of new "Chaos Guns" engine
Originally "Chaos Guns" was meant to be a multiplayer shooter, a mix of Alien Breed and Hired Guns. Two years ago, a first demo version was released. Shortly afterwards the only programmer did back out. According to the team in a blog entry, meanwhile for a new programmer was looked and the concept of the game was completely reconsidered and simplified.

The old engine Chaos Guns, which was written in the exotic language PowerD, was far too demanding for Amiga computers. Therefore the graphics have been reduced from 256 to 32 colours and a classic tile-base model used. The Multiplayer theme "had to go" but the functional inventory and items management was reworked.

In order to be able testing the changes, different prototypes have been developed. At first there were some internal versions created with the Windows-based Game Maker, now also a playable version for the Amiga was released using Backbone (Youtube video).

The Backbone prototyope is meant to demonstrate the concept of the game to prove "that a full game using Backbone IS possible". The proper game will be written in computer code, which the Slovakian programmer Jozef Tomka will do.

The prototype is available in three different versions which differ from the size of the section of the playfield. Version A features the biggest section of the playfield but does not run smoothly on a 68030.

Download:

ChaosGunsBBDemo-A.lha (2 MB) (biggest section of the playfield

Graphic card: Picasso II+ clone "Matzes-GraKa" available
For quite some time, Matthias "Matze" Heinrichs has been working on clone of the Picasso II+. Now in the Kryoflux store such a graphic card can be bought. Matzes-Graka has the same performance like the original card - a Cirrus GD5434 graphic chip with 2 MB RAM is also used - but is "about 25% faster than a Picasso II+ in an A2000 with A2630 accelerator board".

The card also can be used in an Amiga 500 - after soldering the expansion port connector. It has an integrated monitor switcher, which switches between Amiga and VGA signal. Matzes-GraKa consists of two parts (mainboard and slot sheet with VGA-port) which are connected with a flat ribbon cable. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Free Pascal updated
In 2004 Karoly 'Chain-Q' Balogh ported the compiler Free Pascal to MorphOS and two years later for the first time adapted it to AmigaOS 4. Based on Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's version of Free Pascal for AROS, MorphOS and AmigaOS 3.x he has adapted the latest version for AmigaOS 4. Completed by Marcus Sackrow the compiler now is available for all platforms.

Karoly Balogh himself does not use the version for AmigaOS 4, therefore he asks all users to try it and give feedback. (snx) (Translation: dr)

ReWarp: Reimplementation of WarpOS for AmigaOS 4 in progress
Under the title link Dennis van der Boon (well-known by his SonnetAmiga project) is working on a reimplementation of WarpOS for AmigaOS 4. The goal of "ReWarp" (screenshot) is to make it possible runing WarpOS-programms under PowerPC computers which are supported by the WarpOSEmu.

A supporter of the project mentioned the PowerPC cores e500, e5500 and 4x0 - that means the processors of the AmigaOne X5000 as well as of the Sam460 and of the Tabor-board. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Datatype: WarpTIFF 45.9
Again after five years, Oliver Roberts has released another update of his WarpTIFF-datatypes for AmigaOS 3.x, WarpUp, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS which are sold as Shareware.

Changes in version 45.9:
  • Can now load image files conforming to the BigTIFF specification
  • Added JPEG AltiVec speed optimizations for the AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS versions making decoding speed of baseline images 1.5x faster on a G4 and 1.9x faster on a PA6T, with fancy upsampling off, on average. These optimizations can be toggled off/on using the new USE_ALTIVEC setting
  • JPEG Huffman decoder in PowerPC versions is now 5-10% faster
  • Applications may now configure the datatype settings via a local variable, overriding any global user settings present in ENV:
  • Replaced usage of old Exec and Dos AmigaOS 4 functions with the new ones
  • Updated with libtiff 4.0.6, zlib 1.2.8 and jpeglib 9b
  • AmigaOS 4 version and MorphOS AltiVec code recompiled with GCC 5.2.0
  • MorphOS and WarpOS versions recompiled with VBCC 0.9d

Web-Browser: NetSurf 3.5 68k (SDL-MUI-Version)
Artur Jarosik has released an update of his SDL and MUI based AmigaOS/68k port of the web browser NetSurf. This port of Netsurg is different to the one based on ReAction provided by Chris Young (review) which additional to the version for AmigaOS-4 is available as beta version 3.5 for AmigaOS 3.5.

The update of the SDL-version (video of NetSurf 3.4 under AmiKit X) provides a MUI-based preferences. Besides, it is now possible to use TrueType and non-TrueType fonts. The libraries and source codes correspond to the latest version. This time NetSurf was compiled with GCC 3.4 instead of 4.5 which provides a better 68k output.
